family-friendly hiking loop offers nice views of one of central Slovakia’s overlooked towns
nestled in the historic Upper Nitra region
offers more than just its industrial heritage
Tucked between its historic streets and forested outskirts are hidden gems inviting both locals and visitors to explore
As part of the In the Footsteps of Prievidza project
a newly promoted trail introduces two panoramic viewpoints
providing a peaceful and picturesque outing suitable for all ages and fitness levels
A helping hand in the heart of Europe offers a travel guide of Slovakia
The circular trail begins near the municipal cemetery on Mariánsky Vŕšok hill
a scenic spot also home to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary—one of the city’s most photogenic landmarks
The starting point is easily accessible by car
The first viewpoint is located on Mariánsky Vŕšok itself
where visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the Vtáčnik mountain range
and parts of Prievidza’s historic centre
and educational panels offering insight into the area’s geography and history
the trail continues along the Mariánska Castle Path
lined with eight information boards highlighting local landmarks and points of interest
The path winds through a narrow alley in Skotňa Park
eventually reaching a natural rock opening beneath the hill—a local curiosity shrouded in legend
this cave-like space once served as a secret escape tunnel from a labyrinth beneath the former Prievidza Castle
allegedly stretching as far as the Piarist monastery—or even Bojnice Castle
it functioned as a cellar for one of Prievidza’s earliest two-storey homes
and later as a storage space for the now-defunct Carpathia food factory
The trail then follows Cesta pod Skalou (literally "Path Beneath the Rock")
branching onto an unpaved forest track that climbs gently towards the Kopanice housing estate
Emerging between rows of panelák apartment blocks
the route leads directly to the nearby forest park
stands a modest wooden lookout tower—an unexpected reward at the end of the walk
the structure stands three metres tall on concrete pillars and is reached by a flight of seventeen steps
walkers are treated to tranquil views over Prievidza's suburban fringes and the Handlovka River below
Wooden trail markers on trees guide the final stretch of the route
The full loop covers roughly seven kilometres and is suitable for casual walkers
and anyone seeking a gentle outdoor escape
Both viewpoints are also reachable by public transport—one at the cemetery bus stop
the other near the forest park—making this one of the most accessible nature walks in the region

A coal-burning power station in the Nitra Valley in central Slovakia annually emitted large quantities of arsenic (up to 200 tonnes) between 1953 and 1989
pollution-control measures have reduced arsenic emissions to less than 2 tonnes a year
the power station was still a source of airborne arsenic pollution
As part of an EU-funded study on exposure to arsenic and cancer risk in central and Eastern Europe we carried out a study of environmental levels of arsenic in the homes and gardens of residents of the district
house dust samples (n=210) and composite house dust samples (n=109) were collected and analysed using inductively coupled plasma atomic absorption spectroscopy (ICP-AES) at Imperial College
The mean arsenic content of coal and ash in samples taken from the plant was 519 μg/g (n=19) and 863 μg/g (n=22)
The geometric mean (GM) arsenic concentration of garden soils was 26 μg/g (range 8.8–139.0 μg/g)
for house dust 11.6 μg/g (range 2.1–170 μg/g) and for composite house dust 9.4 μg/g (range 2.3–61.5 μg/g)
The correlation between the arsenic levels in soil and in house dust was 0.3 (P<0.01)
in soil and composite house dust 0.4 and house dust and composite house dust 0.4 (P<0.01 for both)
Arsenic levels in both house dust and soil decreased with distance from the power station
levels in both fell by half 5 km from the point source
Weak correlations were seen between the total urinary arsenic concentrations and arsenic concentrations in composite house dust

Company Brose Prievidza invested millions into modernisation of the airport.
The international airport with irregular operations in Prievidza (Trenčín Region) has recently reopened after a make-over, which started last August.
The reconstruction was financed by the local company Brose Prievidza. The modernisation project of the runway, paid with new asphalt, amounted to €3.1 million.
“It is a very big success for the region and for us as it makes our life easier,” said Axel Mallener, general manager of Brose Prievidza, as quoted by the Sme daily. “It will also help our infrastructure a lot.”
The airport is expected to attract more tourists as well as investors to the region of Horná Nitra, of which Prievidza is the centre.
“It is an imaginary gate to the region,” said František Zlocha, president of Aeroclub Prievidza, as quoted by Sme. “It will now be possible to fly anywhere in the world from Prievidza and to Prievidza.”
The airport wants to focus on private aviation traffic and business flights, said Ľuboš Jánošík, manager of the Prievidza airport.
Trenčín Region Governor Jaroslav Baška is convinced the modernised airport is a big opportunity for the region to attract new guests, “including new foreign firms, which will be closer to the region like this”, Sme wrote.
Prievidza Mayor Katarína Macháčková also appreciated the fact that the private sector helped reconstruct the airport and has hopes for the more progressive development of the region.
“It is a rare and exceptional example of a businessman or investor who comes to our region and invests in it,” she said, as quoted by Sme.
After the reconstruction, heavier aircraft can land at the airport, which was not possible in the past. This will also help Brose.
“When 10 people from Germany drive here, it takes five hours,” Mallener claimed, as quoted by Sme. “When we use our own plane, it takes 45 minutes.”
It was Aeroclub Prievidza that provided for the modernisation of the airport since the runway, 1,081 metres long and 23 metres wide, is situated on plots owned by the club, Sme wrote.

The attack did not dissuade hikers following day
a female brown bear attacked and injured a 67-year old man while he was mushroom picking in the forest above the village of Kanianka
A bear with two cubs attacked me from the tall grass
All I could do was to quickly turn before it pounced on me
which saved my life," said Ján Kubica after he was patched up in Prievidza hospital
adding that bears usually attack when you surprise them
I knew there were people ahead of me so I had no worries."
the man was able to walk two kilometres to a nearby meadow and call his wife
who called for rescue that arrived about half an hour later
the man has crossed a bear's path three times
The first time was a female bear with three cubs
The second was with a young male; the man stopped and the animal moved away
The My Horná Nitra news site reported that on Sunday
the forest where the incident took place was full of hikers and mushroom pickers
several admitted they had some reservations
but not enough to dissuade them from going there
The attack came just two weeks after a bear attacked and injured a man near the village of Hybe
Liptovský Mikuláš district in northern Slovakia
In this regard, Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba (SNS nominee) announced on Sunday that 12 problematic bears had been shot in nine days in the district

a golf course with Scottish characteristics will be constructed on an area of 33 hectares between 2009 and 2012
unlike those of an American or English type
needs neither extensive surface adaptations nor special lawn plantings as it will use natural terrain
Another part of the complex will consist of the already operating Water-World recreational-relaxation centre designed for families with children
The budget for the golf course’s construction is €10 million
This year a training driving ground and a six-hole golf academy of a more demanding level will be built
but the latter will be put into full operation only in 2010
Players will have access to motel accommodation
He said the course will be built on land next to the demarcated mining spaces of the Cígeľ Mine
not good for seeding forests but very suitable for golf
Sme wrote that the designer of the initial master study of the complex is Slovak golf architect
His original design was adapted for the final plan by world renowned golf architect Tom Mackenzie
who has built several similar greens in Scotland
The complex will be constructed in close cooperation with the Scottish town of Musselburgh
which has both a mining tradition as well as the world’s oldest golf course of this type still in use

the Bermuda international enjoyed an exceptional season even by his lofty standards.“It feels great to finalise another goal and continue to try and keep representing Bermuda to the fullest,” said Phillips.“It’s a very good feeling when other coaches nominate you as the best among your peers
it is not only very humbling but very pleasing.“Rumour had it that I was supposed to be MVP but there was a big rift about it
I had an idea of the prize because a reporter told me a few weeks back
you just play and if recognised you humbly accept.”The Bosman team and MVP title are given to those players that not by birth are part of the European Union (EU)

Previdza’s Aerospool plans serial production of the certified aircraft
The new type of light sport aircraft (LSA) manufactured in Prievidza is now certified according to the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
only a prototype of the WT9 Dynamic LSA exists
but the Aerospool company in Prievidza is planning its serial production
This is also why it is planning the expansion of its production
Aerospool has been manufacturing the WT 9 Dynamic ultra-light since 2000 and has exported them to about 20 countries around the globe
It took the company five years to complete the certification process for the LSA category
This was partly because the EASA were still completing their regulations
The company plans to launch the serial production of the WT9 Dynamic LSA in October
“This will mean quite a significant extension in production,” said company director Ján Hrabovský as cited by TASR
the company manufactures four planes in the ultra-light category each month
Now it will add two LSA aircrafts each month
Hrabovský expects that they will need to hire an additional 20-30 people in order for the company to satisfy the orders it receives
countries from the whole of Europe have showed an interest in the LSA aircrafts
The company also expects revived sales to South America where the EASA certificates are accepted too
Northern America remains questionable as Slovakia does not have a respective bilateral agreement with them
“The certification means the opening of new markets for the Slovak aviation industry,” said Hrabovský
“This is also proof that Slovakia does not need to be just an assembly hall; that there does not only need to be cars
not only companies that employ people on assembly lines but those designing aircraft can grow here.”
Sullivan Phillips and his BC Prievidza team have endured Jekyll and Hyde performances in the opening two games of their best-of-five series against Nitra in the second round of the Slovakian Men’s National Basketball League play-offs.Having only beaten three seeded Nitra once in their four regular season meetings
second-seeded Prievidza took Game One comfortably
thanks to the Bermudian who poured in 20 points
was a totally different story with Prievidza losing on the road 79-72 to leave the series level heading into the crucial Game Three.Phillips was subdued with nine points and seven rebounds in the loss with the side holding a six-point lead after the first quarter.Nitra point guard Denis Clemente scored 22 points and had four assists.“So far we’ve been a tale of two teams,” said Phillips
“Game One we totally took away everything they wanted to do
and won by 20.“Game Two we took away what they wanted to do in the last five minutes and were down by 18 with five minutes to go
We closed in and were 30 seconds away from another victory if we would have made shots down the stretch
but now we have to refocus.“For us to win we have to play good defence
play fast on offence and we will be fine.“Game Two we deviated from that plan and we lost
but I’m confident we will get it right.”Game Three is scheduled for tomorrow night at Prievidza
AS TWO of the victims of the Nováky explosion were buried on March 7 and 8
attention focussed on the causes of the blast
which killed three people and left five missing
Three explosions in the ammunition defusing hall of the Military Maintenance Company in Nováky left three confirmed dead
The blast leveled an area the size of two football fields and left a twenty-metre wide crater at its epicentre
The explosions were followed by a shockwave that broke windows up to eleven kilometres away in the town of Prievidza
AS TWO of the victims of the Nováky explosion were buried on March 7 and 8
The explosion took place on March 2 in the western Slovak town of Nováky
The government has promised compensation of Sk1 million from its own coffers to the families of the missing and deceased
and the Union of Slovak military employees will add a total of Sk175,000
which levelled an area larger than two football fields and left a 20-metre wide crater
was caused by an excess of ammunition being held in the disposal hall
Defence Minister Robert Kašický said on TV Markíza on March 4 that munitions defusing bomb disposal units such as the one at the Military Maintenance Company (VOP) in Nováky are only supposed to hold as much ammunition in the disposal hall as can be removed over one working shift
He said that the explosion might have been triggered by people not adhering to this rule
"We believe there must have been excess ammunition in the hall
considering the size of the explosion and the fact that it managed to destroy the whole building," he said

Witnesses to the catastrophe reported three consecutive explosions around 16:20
followed by a shockwave that broke windows as far away as in Prievidza
Restaurant owner Marcel Pažický of Opatovce nad Nitrou
about one and a half kilometres from Nováky
said he ran outside when he heard the first explosion
"We were in my restaurant when we heard the first explosion," he told the Pravda daily
"It was followed soon after by the second
which must have been really strong since we felt it from over a kilometre and a half away."
He said that there was a gap of about a minute between the first and the second explosions
while the third came right after the second
"The shockwave was so strong that we were sure that many people must have died."
"It's scorched land," said Štefan Svitok of the Health Ministry
who arrived on site to coordinate rescue efforts
"There have been small explosions in the past
but this was catastrophic," he told the Sme daily
a disaster of this scale has only been seen in countries like China and Russia
Fire-fighters from Nováky and other nearby towns were dispatched to the site and managed to get the fire under control
but stayed until around 07:30 on March 3 to cool down the remaining unexploded ammunition at the site
which included around 3,000 artillery grenades
Kašický called a government crisis meeting at around 21:00 with Prime Minister Robert Fico
and Police President Ján Packa also in attendance
Kašický and Fico went to the site of the explosion to organise rescue operations
Thirty people were rescued at the site and treated for injuries in nearby hospitals
Two soldiers who took part in the rescue efforts were later taken to the hospital for examination after they both inhaled chemicals and one received first-degree burns at the site
Kašický said that people in the area should not be worried as no harmful chemicals had been found in the atmosphere
and soil samples were taken from areas surrounding the explosion and no toxic materials that might hurt local inhabitants were found
According to Defence Ministry spokesman Daniel Gemela
Workers must proceed carefully due to the danger of hidden live ammunition
which also rules out any possibility of using heavy machinery on the site
This is the third disaster that the people of Nováky have experienced within the last three years
this is the third tragedy that we've had in our town," said Nováky's Mayor Dušan Šimka
"The first was the explosion of the Nováky chemical plant in September 2005
the was the cave-in at the mine where four miners died
But this [explosion at the VOP] was the biggest disaster that we've had yet
fire engines and ambulances here in my life," he said
Slovakia became NATO's leading country for defusing ammunition in 2005 and was set to prepare instructions for disposing of obsolete weapons that would be adopted by the other 26 or NATO's member countries
The daily reported on March 5 that NATO had plans to build a state-of-the-art defusing facility at the VOP
which distinguished itself in the 1990s for its defusing of the Soviet SS 23 rocket system
Kašický has said that Slovakia will now have to readdress the issue along with its commitments to NATO

Witnesses say the incident took place near the Billa supermarket and that local Nazi supporters were responsible
One man has since been arrested and charged with a racially motivated crime after he admitted to police he was a Nazi supporter
confirmed they were now pursuing the case and investigating the activities of 15 other men on the night of September 30

"I can confirm we are investigating a racially motivated crime and that those responsible will face the full force of the law," he said
police stopped an illegal neo Nazi concert in Papradno (in the Považská Bystrica district) attended by around 500 skinheads from across Europe and the US
The police operation involved 150 officers and 89 skinheads were detained
The police used only handcuffs as a means of restraint
and those detained were released in the morning
while other skinheads in Papradno left at about 5:00
Trenčín Regional Police spokesperson
said: "We checked every person who was there
We brought 89 people in for questioning on suspicion of supporting movements suppressing human rights and freedoms
"All of them were released and so far no charges have been brought
considering the information we have gathered
A video camera with two cassettes and knives was also seized
another two from Slovakia and one Czech group were supposed to participate
but band members disappeared a short time before the raid
Slovenia and Germany are also believed to have attended the concert
which was held to commemorate the death of Ian Stuart Donaldson
founder of the Blood and Honour organisation and lead singer of Skrewdriver
Donaldson died in a car crash in the UK in September 1993
According to the Ľudia Proti Rasizmu (People Against Racism - ĽPR) NGO the concert was one of the biggest neo-Nazi events in central Europe
where the "elite of the elite" in the skinhead movement met
ĽPR chairman Ladislav Ďurkovič said he now feared that revenge attacks would be targeted against Roma
other minorities and anti-racist activists
"The police poked a hornet's nest
which could lead to the radicalisation and strengthening of the neo-Nazi movement
We can now expect an increased number of skinhead attacks targeted against Roma people
other minority groups and third sector activists like us
The skinheads know it was us who tipped off the police," he warned
the neo-Nazis who attended the concert wrote on their internet web page: "The incident in Prievidza was not the last one
let them see that no police intervention will stop us
"We didn't do anything that would be considered criminal in a free country
and still tens of us were brought in by the police."
photo: Name of photographer withheld by requestSome of the most important work that remains is identifying the owners and distributors of the Nazi paraphernalia
ĽPR say Saturday's rally involved "the hardest core of global neo-Nazis"
ĽPR praised the police action but insisted they now expected law enforcement officers to pursue prosecutions and investigate skinhead movements in Slovakia
"After several neo-Nazi meetings earlier this year which were ignored by the police
we put all our efforts into changing the approach of the police towards these meetings and we succeeded," said Ďurkovič
"Participation alone in such an event is a crime involving the suppression of human rights and freedoms
"But we are disappointed that the police questioned only 235 suspects out of more than 500 neo-Nazis in attendance."
Police spokesperson Bušová said that the people at the concert did not publicly claim to be neo-Nazis
and that the event had been organised under the guise of a dance party
said the police plan to strengthen their fight against organised neo-Nazi groups
and claimed such a policy is already in use
"The proof of it was this action," he said

“The prosecution into the crime of obstructing the execution of justice still hasn’t been concluded
An investigator from the Prievidza District Police Directorate is carrying out procedural moves in the case in line with the Penal Order at the order of a prosecutor from the Prievidza District Prosecutor’s Office,” said Sipavy
a prosecutor from the Prievidza District Prosecutor’s Office based on an examination of the dossier scrapped a decision made by an investigator on September 12
2016 to drop suspicions into the crime of obstructing the execution of justice
A copy of the resolution on relaunching the prosecution obtained by TASR states that the “perpetrator
as a staff member of the Main Mining Office (HBU)
via their orders concerning the drawing up of a report on the findings
influenced the work of the consultative commission”
TV Markiza was the first to report on the investigation’s re-launching in October 2016
citing a former head of the mining security department at HBU
“The evidence that’s possible to find in the investigation dossier suggest that the entire course of the mining tragedy
but mainly the causes of the fatal working injuries of the 20 miners
