A narrow 1-0 win over Ružomberok secures Spartak’s third cup triumph in four years
For the third time in four years, Spartak Trnava are Slovnaft Cup winners. In a tense, often disjointed final in Dunajská Streda on 1 May, Erik Daniel’s first-half strike proved decisive as Spartak avenged last season’s heartbreak against MFK Ružomberok with a narrow 1-0 win
who kept his composure and fired low past Ružomberok’s Hugo Jan Bačkovský
It was a scrappy moment in a scrappy match
Slovakia’s national knockout football competition
people still refer to it as the Slovak Cup
Functions similarly to the FA Cup in England — open to clubs across all levels of Slovak football
The winner qualifies for the Europa League qualifying rounds
They squandered no fewer than five excellent opportunities
including a penalty just before the hour when Samuel Lavrinčík dragged his shot wide
The contest was briefly halted after the hour when smoke from flares thrown by Trnava fans engulfed the pitch
but their final ball too often let them down
Ondřej Smetana’s side ended the match with more possession
Spartak managed the closing stages expertly
controlled possession and frustrated their tiring opponents
The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes among the red-and-black faithful
whose noisy presence had dominated the night both on and off the pitch
Victory not only gives Spartak their ninth Slovak Cup
but also secures a place in next season’s Europa League qualifiers
“We went all-in on this,” admitted head coach Michal Gašparík
The build-up to the final had been dominated by security concerns
prompting the town of Dunajská Streda to urge residents to avoid public spaces and for businesses to close
The Slovak Football Association criticised these measures as “unreasonable and disrespectful”
there will be a lingering sense of what might have been
created the better chances and yet fell short
“We had the game in our hands,” rued Smetana
“But football is about taking your chances

Head Coach Mark Spatcher said the first stage of the competition was an 'amazing' learning experience for the whole club
"The girls experienced a lot of success in 2024
they won the national conference finals at U14 level and they also won the Globasket B division in Spain
"As a full U15 set of girls competing up a year and against such good competition
[stage one of the] Middle European League was a real baptism [of fire] at this level but one the girls have loved and embraced
"To take 11 girls that that live within a five mile radius in a small town in the midlands and compete against two national teams from Romania and Luxembourg and other top European academies was a great and humbling experience
it’s given us the opportunity to compete against top opposition
As a collective we learnt a lot from our time in Hungary and it reinforced the things we strive to become as a team."

Goodison Park will host its first European match in several years
Everton Football Club will make their return to European competition next week against MFK Ruzomberok after the Slovakian club won the second leg of their second round qualifier
The first leg of the third qualifying round will be held at Goodison Park on July 27
with the away portion hosted by Ruzomberok on August 3
MFK Ružomberok finished 3rd in the Fortuna Liga last year
earning them a spot in the Europa League’s first round
Ružomberok’s last appearance in Europe was the 2006-07 Champions League
where they fell to Russian side CSKA Moscow during the qualifying matches
The club from Slovakia play their home games at the Štadión pod Čebraťom
The Slovaks lined up in a 4-3-3 formation for the away leg at Brann in the previous round
with goals by midfielder Kristi Qose from a corner and a penalty by captain and defender Dominik Kružliak
Speaking after the draw that pitted the winners of the tie against Everton, the Slovak manager Norbert Hrnčár stated he had an added incentive to play the Blues as he was a Liverpool fan
Expect Ronald Koeman to field a full strength Everton side
particularly in the first leg with all to play for
Smaller sides from far-flung European outposts are not to be underestimated
as West Ham learned last season in a similar scenario against Romanian outfit Astra Giurgiu
Jordan Pickford and Sandro Ramirez may well be fit in time to make their competitive debuts in this game

It was uncomfortably close, but in the end, Everton were able to prevail over Slovakian side MFK Ruzomberok in the Europa League
with Leighton Baines scoring in the first and Dominic Calvert-Lewin netting in the second
it’s unlikely that Ronald Koeman will have been very pleased with his side’s performance the last two Thursdays
Lets get this out of the way now - Michael Keane
and Davy Klaassen were very good in this game
Keane’s passing in particular is outstanding
while Pickford shows an ability to command his area that Evertonians will have greatly missed
Klaassen had trouble getting a firm grasp on the game
when the Dutchman was able to get on the ball
he showed a deft touch and eye for a clever pass
Wayne Rooney and Sandro Ramirez were truly abysmal
Rooney’s first touch and passing ability completely abandoned him during both Europa League legs
The legendary Englishman was all over the place
That included the horrific moment when Tom Davies played a laser-sharp ball into Rooney’s feet
only for Everton’s new number 10 to step on top of the ball
and easily frustrated when he felt a Ruzomberok player fouled him
The Spaniard was much better in the first leg when Koeman deployed him out wide
Don’t expect these two to partner up top very often
Everton have a massive hole on their right flank
It looks like the youngster Kenny is headed out on loan
but Martina was so poor in the first leg at Goodison Park that Ronald Koeman felt the need to shoehorn central midfielder Tom Davies into the role
and has a good eye for a pass - but he’s clearly not a defender
Mason Holgate is not a right back by trade
the Blues may be in serious trouble until Coleman returns
Speaking of wonderful players - Senegalese international Idrissa Gana Gueye is one of them
Gana was the signing of the season at Goodison Park last year
and easily the nearest to Romelu Lukaku in terms of the Blues’ most valuable performer in 2016/17
Gueye should not have been named to the starting eleven in Slovakia
When Everton can expect to have most of the ball - particularly when they lack a true creative midfielder - Gana is a poor tactical fit
in addition to Rooney being forced to drop deep for the ball more than anyone would have liked
Morgan Schneiderlin was forced to do all of the distributing from midfield
while Gana repeatedly turned the ball over at inopportune moments
it wasn’t all on him - his manager did not place him in a role to succeed
and there were a few encouraging signs from both legs
Dominic Calvert-Lewin continues to thrive in his proper position
while Keane and Pickford have integrated seamlessly
All the same, there’s plenty for Ronald Koeman to work on ahead of the Premier League opener against Stoke City
In the first leg of the second Europa League qualifying round, MFK Ruzomberok are set to host Trabzonspor at Futbalovy stadion MFK Ruzomberok on Thursday
The home side finished sixth in the regular season of Slovakia's top flight in 2023-24 with 34 points from 22 games, while the visitors finished third in Turkey's Super Lig with 67 points from 38 games
Though the hosts did lose 1-0 against Tobol in the second leg of the first qualifying round on July 18
their 5-2 first-leg victory on July 11 was enough to see them progress with the scoreline 5-3 on aggregate
Ruzomberok did concede first against Tobol
but two first half goals and three second half goals helped them to secure a commanding lead ahead of the second leg
The Rose ended the 2023-24 regular season with four more points than they achieved in 2022-23
but they did disappointingly finish their overall campaign with 47 points
the same as they did in the 2022-23 season
Ruzomberok reached the qualifying rounds of the Europa League thanks to their Slovensky Pohar win last term
and this was their first major trophy since 2005-06
Manager Ondrej Smetan took charge in October 2023 and replaced Peter Tomko after the latter had lost his final game 5-0 against Podbrezova on October 21
Smetan's side scored 38 goals and conceded 43
and this made them the division's eighth-best offensive and seventh-best defensive team
Opponents Trabzonspor did not participate in the first Europa League qualifying round
and Thursday's game will be their first competitive match in all competitions since May 26
Black Sea Storm's third-placed finish was perhaps overshadowed by the historic title race between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce
in which the sides accumulated 102 and 99 points respectively
Trabzonspor's total of 67 points was 10 more than they achieved in the 2022-23 season and this should not be overlooked
the club scored 69 league goals and conceded on 50 occasions
and this made them the division's third-best offensive and joint sixth-best defensive team respectively
Manager Abdullah Avci has been in charge since October 2023 and has overseen 37 games as Trabzonspor boss
and his 62% win rate is the highest he has achieved in any of his six managerial jobs
The hosts are likely to name a similar XI to the one that comfortably beat Tobol 5-3 on aggregate, so Jan Hladik and Martin Chrien can be expected to start in the forward line
Elsewhere, given that defenders Simon Gabriel, Matus Maly and Alexander Selecky all scored in the first leg against Tobol for Ruzomberok
they are likely to retain their place in the team
As for the visitors, centre-back Huseyin Turkmen is ruled out due to an Achilles tendon rupture and is not scheduled to return until next month
Midfielder Enis Bardhi scored for Trabzonspor in a 3-1 friendly win against Zeleznicar on July 13 and could start on Thursday
MFK Ruzomberok possible starting lineup:Fruhwald; Kostl
Trabzonspor possible starting lineup:Tepe; Elmali
While Ruzomberok will feel confident of causing the visitors difficulty given their performances against Tobol
they still experienced moments of defensive vulnerability in those games
Additionally, Trabzonspor will take confidence from the fact their hosts did concede the first goal in both legs of the first qualifying round, and should come into the game as favourites. For data analysis of the most likely results, scorelines and more for this match please click here
Assessing the Blues’ personnel options ahead of Thursday’s game
Everton’s first competitive fixture of the 2017-18 season is nearly upon us
and it’s a big one - the Blues return to European competition for the first time since 2014-15
The first leg of the Europa League’s 3rd qualifying round will be played at Goodison Park on Thursday
one of the most prominent discussions from Everton’s first three preseason matches has been what we can glean regarding Ronald Koeman’s plan for Thursday’s game
we assess how Everton might start the game against Ruzomberok
Before looking at the specific players we think will lineup for Everton on Thursday
it’s important to understand the tactics we expect to see the club employ not only this week
Following the acquisition of Morgan Schneiderlin in January of last season
we started to see in more detail exactly what Koeman’s preferred tactics and formation look like
The Frenchman was and still is the linchpin to the entire Everton setup
Koeman prefers a 4-3-3 — but one in which most of his players have very specific roles
where each player has a very specific role
The deepest midfielder — Schneiderlin — is perhaps the most important player on the pitch
He is expected not only to break up attacks in front of his back four
but shoulders the bulk of the burden in transitioning his team from attack to defense
Everton deploys a box-to-box midfielder whose main purpose is to wreck havoc on his opponents in the midfield
The most advanced central midfielder isn’t a true No
8 — still expected to chase the ball down in midfield
but with a greater creative and goal-scoring role when the Toffees have the ball
The wide attackers are expected to drift into the center to help offset the lack of a true No
bringing creativity to the center of the final third
the full-backs must get into the attack and provide width
otherwise the Toffees’ attack gets bogged down in the middle of the pitch
we expect to see the following starters and bench players on Thursday:
Below are a few words on each projected starter
as well as a rating from 1 to 10 as to his likelihood of starting
Pickford is easily the best goalkeeper in the side
but he’s played limited minutes for the club in preseason after participating in the UEFA U-21 European Championship earlier this summer
We don’t anticipate that keeping him out of the lineup
but we can’t completely rule it out either
Kenny and the right-back position are easily the most in flux at this stage
the right side of defense is Seamus Coleman’s once he returns from injury
there are three players vying for this spot
We give the leg up to Kenny for now — he was very impressive at the U-20 World Cup this summer and is likely the best attacking option from right-back that Everton has right now
Cuco Martina probably isn’t ever going to be the first-choice player at the position
and came to camp so late that he cannot possibly be ready to start
Mason Holgate filled in for Coleman last season
but he’s utterly dreadful in the final third
where the Toffees need their right-back to be able to contribute in their current setup
A slight knock kept Phil Jagielka out of the lineup Saturday — if it continues to ail him
there’s a 100% chance Williams gets the start on Thursday
we still very much expect Williams to get the start in the center of defense
but the Welshman has no experience playing in European competition — something that Jagielka has gained during his time at Everton
Koeman likely won’t factor that in too heavily
The towering English center-back has been one of Everton’s best players this preseason
and he’s been in camp since training began
The 100% certainty in Baines’ starting place is a result of two factors
and would be a good starting left-back for most Premier League teams
Everton has literally zero senior cover at left-back
with Callum Connolly the only real option at the position
Everton’s entire setup hinges on the ability of its deep-lying midfielder to both break up opposing attacks and transition his team from defense to offense
Nobody does either of those things better than Schneiderlin
Gana plays the role of the true box-to-box midfielder with a tireless work rate and solid defensive skills
He’s got a tendency to get sucked out of position from time to time
8 Everton has right now — he’ll deservedly start on Thursday
Klaassen is the new wrinkle in the Everton midfield trio
and without a doubt is a starter for this team going forward
8” perfectly — and his ability to work well with Gana and Schneiderlin may well define the team’s success this season
Koeman also has a ready and willing Tom Davies
who is more familiar with the system having played with Everton last season
If Koeman wanted Davies to be the regular starter in that role
he wouldn’t have added Klaassen this offseason
but it isn’t impossible that the Dutchman prefers the academy product in this one on the basis of his experience with the club
This is where things start to get interesting
With the Gylfi Sigurdsson saga holding up any potential moves for wide attackers
Everton’s options are limited to youngsters and veterans likely more suited for a role off the bench going forward
who possesses both experience playing a wide role under Koeman and in European competition
seems as sure a bet as any to play in the left winger role
and Aaron Lennon could all theoretically play here as well
Sandro doesn’t have experience on his side like Mirallas
or Lennon could all supplant him in the starting lineup — but Koeman clearly rates the player — so much so
that he must be viewed as the favorite for the right wing position
He’s got a little more experience than Lookman and Dowell
and a little more to offer going forward than Lennon -- but don’t be surprised if you see any of those three players here instead
I’d rate the likelihood that Rooney is Everton’s top-choice striker on opening day of the Premier League at only around 3/10
they haven’t been able to secure a move for a better striker
so it’ll have to be Rooney at this early stage of the season
The 31-year-old has shown well in preseason and still has the experience and talent to do well at this stage
Selecting seven players for the bench proved substantially more difficult than the starters
things start to get a little more complicated
and Lennon all are left to fight over the final two spots
These are the 18 players we expect Ronald Koeman to ride with on Thursday evening under the lights at Goodison Park

Wayne Rooney's Everton return threatened to turn into embarrassment before captain Leighton Baines struck to give his side a slender first-leg lead in their Europa League third qualifying round clash with Ruzemberok
The Slovakian minnows hit the bar prior to Baines' 65th minute intervention and almost grabbed an equaliser to take into next week's second leg when substitute Milos Lacny missed a glorious chance late on
Rooney had a handful of chances to mark his second competitive debut for his boyhood club with a goal
but there was no mistaking the frustration of a side who started with £100 million of new signings in their lineup
Ruzemberok had been expected to roll over but instead their quest to puncture Everton's mood of preseason optimism is alive and well for next week's trip to the Futbalovy Stadion
There were no suggestions of the struggle to follow when Rooney and his fellow new boys were given a tumultuous welcome before kickoff
nor in the opening minutes in which the home side looked in cruise control
Ruzomberok captain Dominik Kruzliak almost screwed an attempted clearance over the head of his keeper Matus Macik in a comical third minute opening
and for the most part of the first quarter-hour the visitors were pinned back
Rooney's tireless work off the ball almost paid off in the 20th minute when he drifted unchallenged across the box to pick up a neat through-ball by Baines
before turning to fire a rising left-foot shot over the bar
Rooney and the impressive Davy Klaassen would also have chances but Ruzomberok served a warning when Dalibor Takac fired just wide on a rare counter-attack
with Cuco Martina completely miskicking from a central position and Idrissa Gueye's long-range effort easily held by Macik
Two blunders by Ashley Williams almost gifted the Slovakians the lead
first a misplaced pass which handed Erik Daniel a clear shot which was well saved by Maarten Stekelenburg
then a second mistake which served up a chance for Peter Maslo
And Ruzomberok were not finished after the break
causing another major scare in the 56th minute when Stekelenburg had to tip a Maslo header against the bar from a Takac free-kick
The introduction of Sandro on the hour helped swing things in Everton's direction and Baines finally lifted the frustration five minutes later when he drilled home a heavily deflected shot from the edge of the box after the visitors only half-cleared a corner
Kevin Mirallas was only denied a second for Everton 10 minutes later by a brilliant fingertip save from Macik and Ruzemberok will still fancy their chances in the return leg next week
Three thoughts from the Blues narrow win in the Europa League
A busy summer of recruitment means pre-season has taken on added importance for Ronald Koeman this summer
Koeman desperately needs this summer’s training to not only get his players fit but also bond them as a group
The latter cannot be achieved quickly and that was evident in this victory
On several occasions there were misplaced passes or a lack of communication that only increased playing time together on the pitch can help eradicate
There was also a distinct lack of shape or plan
which is hardly surprising giving the Blues are only three weeks into their pre-season schedule at this moment in time
Better performances will come with time but Evertonians will have to give this new look team time and patience before they get to see the best of them
Speaking in the match programme for this game
Michael Keane had expressed his belief that working under Ronald Koeman could bring his game on leaps and bounds
It is easy to see why he believes so. Playing in a Burnley team that sat deep and was often on the defensive
Keane showed his defensive nous throughout last season
the England international has more strings to his bow than first though
Calm on he ball and a decent passer to boot; it is easy to see what made Koeman and Director of Football Steve Walsh move quickly to secure his signature
arguably one of the best ball playing centre halves to have played in the history of the game
It’s early days yet but Michael Keane is looking like the player that many already think John Stones is
there was one player who truly changed this game in Everton’s favour and that was Sandro Ramirez
Left on the bench at the beginning of the game
his introduction midway through the second half gave the Blues the kind of attacking power they had been sorely lacking with Wayne Rooney as the central striker
smart on the ball and with excellent movement
Sandro was an instant hit with a packed out Goodison Park
The fact he didn’t end up on the score sheet was surprising given how good this cameo was
His determination to shoot from any angle or distance may be something that needs working on in future but other than that
It would be extremely surprising if he were left sitting on the bench for the return leg
for much of the upcoming season based on this display
Leighton Baines had the winner as Wayne Rooney returned to Goodison Park
Everton struggled for much of their Europa League opener yesterday
but in the end proved too much for Slovakian minnows MFK Ruzomberok
and Michael Keane all made their competitive debuts for the club
⚽️ | @WayneRooney's return, European football back at Goodison and Baines' winner.@EuropaLeague highlights from last night's win... pic.twitter.com/lbjH4sV8DA
All three new boys impressed for the Blues
but it was the evening’s captain who stood out the most
Leighton Baines continues to hardly show any age
Much of Everton’s attack ran through the Englishman
and he created multiple chances with that cultured left boot
Davy Klaassen looked a step ahead of his marker throughout
while Sandro Ramirez completely changed the look of Everton’s attack when he arrived midway through the second half
and looked much better than Ashley Williams
they prepare for an away leg in Slovakia before a friendly against Sevilla prior to the Premier League opener
Dominic Calvert-Lewin's calm finish kept Everton's bid for Europa League qualification on course as Ronald Koeman's men edged MFK Ruzomberok 1-0 in Slovakia
England Under-20 star Calvert-Lewin spared the Toffees' blushes with a late strike in eastern Europe
sealing a 2-0 aggregate victory for the Merseyside club in the third qualifying round
Wayne Rooney again drew a blank in front of goal as he feels his way into his second Everton stint
but Koeman's side did just enough to progress
A below-par Everton laboured for their win
but still conjured the one moment of class required to move into the Europa League playoff round
Calvert-Lewin's smart goal added to Leighton Baines' first-leg strike to ensure Everton stepped further forward in European qualifying action
Big-money summer signing Jordan Pickford started in goal and was able to keep a clean sheet
as Everton avoided any embarrassment on the road
The visitors dominated territory and possession but were unable to find any kind of cutting edge -- that was until replacement Calvert-Lewin pounced went clean through on goal and guided the ball into the bottom corner with a first-time finish on the run
Fresh from claiming the winner in the 1-0 triumph over Venezuela as England won the Under-20s World Cup in June
Calvert-Lewin added another reminder of his predatory instincts in club action
The 20-year-old bagged his first Premier League goal against Hull in March
and his cool finish here offered more insight into the promise he carries into the new season
Koeman will be hoping Rooney can move quickly past the indifferent form that has punctuated his return to his boyhood club so far
with the 31-year-old yet to hit his stride since his summer move from Manchester United
Koeman will be relieved his side have moved another step closer towards qualification for the Europa League proper
Toffees face Slovak opponents in qualifiers
Everton will take on Slovakia’s MFK Ruzomberok in a two-legged third round qualifier to see which team will make it to the final qualifying round before which the Europa League groups will be determined
The first leg will be played at Goodison Park on July 27th
with the return leg the following Thursday at Ruzomberok’s 4,876 capacity Štadión pod Čebraťom ground on 3rd August

32 general hospitals are featured in the 2022 ranking

The rankings are based on data from the years 2018-2021
In addition to the quality of provided health care
the organisations assessed the surgical experience of doctors
the difficulty of the cases hospitals dealt with
Though the Ružomberok military hospital came first of all teaching hospitals
its transparency and economic performance were the worst
The most transparent teaching hospital in the country can be found in Banská Bystrica
The hospital topped the overall ranking last year
Though the satisfaction of patients with the hospital fell
the facility handled the most difficult diagnoses among all teaching hospitals
The worst teaching hospital is in Košice
ended among the ten best hospitals after it recorded the biggest progress
the hospitals in Trebišov and Rožňava

INEKO described Rožňava Hospital as one of the most transparent ones in 2022
but the highest number of patients was dissatisfied with its services
took in the highest number of patients whose diagnoses were the most difficult and expensive
As INEKO noted in the press release
the coronavirus pandemic negatively affected the provision of health care in hospitals
patients’ satisfaction with health care has not suffered and keeps rising on a regular basis
The economic health of hospitals has also improved
which INEKO explains with the fact that hospitals continued to receive money from health insurance firms
but the number of medical procedures decreased due to the coronavirus
hospitals saved funds that they would have otherwise spent on medications
state hospitals continued to increase their debt

which is currently going through a trial run,” he said
Works by Ľudovít Fulla removed from his own gallery over building fears
Works by one of Slovakia’s greatest artists
have had to be removed from a gallery dedicated to the painter after curators said they were no longer safe in the crumbling building
A total of 67 oil paintings and other works on paper were removed from the Gallery of Ľudovít Fulla in Ružomberok in mid-February and taken to a national depositary where they will undergo restoration work and digitalisation
While it remains unclear when the gallery will display the pictures again – a project for much-needed reconstruction work has been completed but financing has yet to be finalised – museum officials say the incident is the culmination of problems with the gallery building dating back over 50 years and which were first raised by Fulla himself
dedicated to one of the most significant personalities of Slovak visual art of the 20th century
has not seen any significant reconstruction in the more than 50 years since it came into being,” Chair of the gallery
himself highlighted structural problems when it was newly-built
The state of the building also formed part of an exhibition – the Thirteenth Chamber – which opened at the gallery in September last year

AFTER the dubious use of cars, suspicious awarding of post-doctoral degrees and the discovery of an unsupervised slush fund the Catholic University in Ružomberok (KU) is facing another potential scandal, as the Nový Čas tabloid daily reports that six university employees received €114,028 in bonuses in 2013.
“Despite the fact that those are bonuses for 2013 and current management of Catholic University entered [office] in June 2014, it will deal with this issue,” says the KU management statement, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
According to Nový Čas, Dean of the KU’s Faculty of Philosophy Marian Kuna signed the bonuses ranging from €10,000 to €30,000.
“Those are persons whose monthly salary is a combination of tariff payment and personal bonus, [which is] usually at the maximum possible level,” former KU rector Tadeusz Zasepa said, as quoted by SITA. “Altogether Marian Kuna paid €243,311 in the form of bonuses for 85 employees in 2013; on average, each employee got bonuses in the amount of €2,862.”
He added that six employees therefore got one half of the money allocated for 85 people while deans of other faculties at KU paid just one third of the same sum in the form of bonuses to their employees.
“We are of the opinion that there was a sensationalising of the salaries of some of our employees that appeared in tabloid media and that it was in turn taken up also by some more serious media is against the respective legislation,” reads a statement from management. “We find it appropriate to wait for the result of the audit ordered by the university founder, which will properly review all the relevant circumstances.”
The Conference of Bishops of Slovakia (KBS), which founded the university, will send an auditing firm to investigate the case. It is not clear whether the audit will be related to all university workplaces.
“I can confirm that audit will be conducted but we will not publish any particulars,” said KBS spokesman Jozef Kováčik, as quoted by the Pravda daily.
Previous internal inspections and audit of external firm revealed several instances of possible fraud, according to private broadcaster TA3, citing documents which it has at its disposal. Police have also investigated, they said.
“Currently there is an ongoing investigation of six criminal subjects,” Police spokeswoman Jana Baloghová said on November 6, as quoted by TA3. “In this stage of the procedure, it is not possible to comment on the investigation process or particular facts.”
One example cited by TA3 points to courses which were meant to last five years being completed in six months via forged official documents. The Plus Jeden Deň tabloid daily reported that there were 22 off-campus study graduates who finished sooner than the standard length of study in 2012.
Plus Jeden Deň also reported that there was an inappropriately high number of post-doctoral degrees awarded in a short period, with many of the recipients hailing from Poland. Polish media has reported on the case pointing to fees at the university violating the law and forging of official documents about their payments, according to daily.
The daily also reported on the shady use of business cars revealed by an inspection which found more than 550 shortcomings when focusing on the period of 2010-2013. The report of subsequent financial inspection says that advance payments covering business trips were three times higher than real costs of those trips.
Furthermore, the university allegedly ran a so- called “black fund” where fees for accommodation or enrolling to study went. According to testimony by members of KU’s Pedagogical Faculty, both employees and students, officials were asking for €10 per enrolee and the money for academic years 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 did not go to official coffers.
No receipts were given for those payments, according to Plus Jeden Deň. Almost €300,000 went to the fund, TA3 reported.
All criminal complaints against the university were originally cancelled since the investigated acts did not happen, according to police.
However, the Regional Prosecutor Office in Žilina reopened investigation in July at the request of Zasepa, according to TA3.
Zasepa, who pointed to a number of alleged illicit financial practices at Catholic University, stepped down from the post in May 2014, citing disputes with the university’s academic senate. The leaving rector then claimed that senators ignored results of an internal inspection approved by an independent auditor trying to cover up unlawful activities, the Sme daily reported.
“I cannot accept applied cynicism covered by political correctness and accompanied by negative political practices in place of where the truth should be sought without reserve,” Zasepa said, as quoted by Sme.
The senate recalled Zasepa at the end of 2013, but Košice’s Archbishop Bernard Bober disagreed and Zasepa remained at his post until he left by choice.
“We have hope that this decision will contribute to the appeasement of situation,” said KBS Secretary Anton Ziolkovský, as quoted by Sme in May.
