Not everyone has the luxury of being energised by their work, but SENEC CEO Aurélie Alemany does
knowing that what she does makes a difference
As one of the world’s most popular brands for innovative energy and storage solutions
a wholly owned subsidiary of EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg – one of the largest energy supply companies in Germany and Europe – is meeting the larger trends in the world
reducing CO2 emissions for a better future
every decision I make every day impacts the future,” Aurélie tells The CEO Magazine
And it’s one of the main reasons I’m at SENEC now
SENEC naturally attracts talent that wants to do more than make money; like Aurélie
you know you’re investing your time for the greater good and having fun at the same time.”
and it’s amazing to work in an environment like this
SENEC continued onboarding new team members
hiring upwards of 100 people in 2021 alone
“The reason we’re so attractive is because we’re flexible
Much credit is due to Aurélie for fostering this culture; one that thrives despite the challenges of the pandemic
She recognises the importance of true leadership
something she says is very different from managing alone
“Leading people in this new world requires empathy
You have to be aware of the psychological and emotional status of your team,” she stresses
“You have to be aware of each individual and be a real leader
It’s unclear how she became so attuned to the needs of others
but it might have a lot to do with knowing herself so well
I am a French girl in Germany,” she smiles
and after my studies I decided to go abroad
Aurélie has been working in the energy industry since 2011
also a subsidiary of EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg
she was instrumental in driving forward the dovetailing of sales brands EnBW
and vigorously continues on this path as CEO of SENEC
She’s made it her mission to expand SENEC’s position as a leading provider of self-sufficiency solutions while strengthening its cooperation with other EnBW companies
together realising the vision of a networked
quality service and huge number of resellers and retailers
Aurélie is confident the company will be able to achieve its ambitious targets
you have to make decisions; a day without a decision is a bad day
And no decision is always the wrong decision
And because we have a high-quality service
which is one of the most important differentiation factors in Germany
retailers and resellers – which we consider our best friends – there’s no doubt that we’ll be successful,” she says
SENEC is a company that’s doubling in size every year
it relies heavily on these strong partnerships
“We need strategic partners that are big enough
otherwise our relationship won’t work,” Aurélie points out
“Having the right partners ensures that we can grow and grow quickly
Aurélie believes these types of partnerships are symbiotic
where each becomes better simply by working together
“We teach our strategic partners to solve problems in a disruptive way
and we also teach them how to make decisions very quickly,” she says
“It’s my belief that to be an entrepreneur
we can also learn from their operative experience

SENEC’s decision to withdraw from the Australian market despite the significant renewable energy penetration in its core markets—Germany and Italy—raises questions about the reasons for this strategic shift
Several factors may have influenced their exit from the country.
SENEC’s decision to refocus on its core markets in Europe
suggests a strategic realignment aimed at consolidating its resources and maximising opportunities in established markets
This shift in focus may align with SENEC’s long-term business objectives and growth priorities
prioritising markets where it has a stronger competitive advantage and market presence.
SENEC’s withdrawal from the Australian market likely reflects a combination of market-specific challenges

Senec Australia has presented its Home and Business battery storage solution at All Energy Australia for the first time
with Managing Director Ian Parkinson saying that the company is hoping to foster community resilience
in the face of rising electricity prices and the current contentious political debate about the security of electricity supply
With record numbers of people attending the All Energy Australia event over the last two days in Melbourne
the excitement about the renewable sector has been palpable
there is no ignoring that there is considerable anxiety about the future of the large scale segment with no federal RET beyond 2020
and the polarised current discussion regarding the security of Australia’s electricity networks and grid stability
Senec Australia is attending All Energy for the first time in 2017
and the company is hoping to foster notions of security and resilliance
through its residential and commercial storage systems
“The initial feedback is that there is a lot of excitement about the battery because people can see that it is award winning and it is a high cycle battery,” said Senec Australia’s Ian Parkinson
“I guess the most important thing is the value that the battery offers – the high cycle rate.”
Senec reports that its residential battery can be cycled 12,000 times under a 10-year manufacturer warranty
meaning that it can be cycled twice per day
charged during off peak periods during the night
In a model not-dissimilar to the sonnen community
Senec also offers an energy sharing platform in its native Germany
“We are hoping to have cleared the regulatory hurdles to become established as a utility on the east coast of Australia by the middle of next year,” said Parkinson
“Having people being able to share their power with who they want
“Senec is all about giving people control of their power
It is like having a roof over their head.”
which is Perth-based Senec Australia’s home state
as the residential market is not yet deregulated
Parkinson said there still remain some innovative approaches the company is exploring that are applicable nationally
“We are looking at offering the Senec batteries as a part of a renewable package
new suburbs that have battery storage behind the meter
Suburbs can then be built with storage behind the mast
There is clearly a lot of interest in battery storage at this year’s All Energy event
with a large number of battery suppliers from Europe
There have even been reports that with rising demand from the emobiltiy and stationary storage sectors globally
that battery cell supply is becoming increasingly tight
Senec’s Parkinson attributed some of the public interest in battery storage down to the need to bolster electricity networks as renewable penetration rates continue to increase
“This is one of the ways that we want to empower people to be a part of the solution,” said Parkinson
People realize that if they don’t start installing batteries in
then the renewable game will have to come to a halt
because the battery can be charged a second time [each day] in off-peak periods.”
The Senec Home is available from 2.5 kWh up to 10 kWh
with the functionality that up to four Home units can be cascade connected
which Senec targets to bring to the Australian market by mid 2018
is available with a capacity of 12 or 18 kWh in three or single phase
30 or 36 kWh unit available only in three-phase

The manufacturers are not succumbing to euphoria
Thomas Pilgram and Maximilian von Grundherr are the CEOs of Senec
even though the German market did not grow as much as some experts had forecast at the beginning of the year: We sold about 5,100 storage units
where we had started delivery during the fourth quarter
Maximilian von Grundherr: We employ 110 staff
dedicated to helping us realise our vision
Thomas Pilgram: We sell our Senec storage units via three wholesalers and almost 550 specialist retailers
At the end of 2016 we had only 320 retailers
The market in Austria is being developed through the retailers of that country
Maximilian von Grundherr: Switzerland is a tri-lingual country
it would make sense to also include Switzerland
Thomas Pilgram: With 100 units sold in the last quarter of 2017
But it is also about sticking as many pins into as many countries as possible on our map of the world
It takes certain sales figures to justify the effort
Thomas Pilgram: Our small crew in Perth has been active for about a year
but the effort in getting our units certified was just very great
in January 2018 we were at last able to dispatch the first containers
we are in cooperation with a large local partner that takes care of the customer service and first-level support for us
Thomas Pilgram: Between 600 and 1,000 – we are very optimistic in our expectations
We have cleared the worst hurdles of the certification process
our all-round energy solution consisting of storage battery and cloud also gives us an edge
we will continue to supply this market from Germany
Here we have developed very flexible manufacturing procedures and have qualified our suppliers
The power electronics are being built to our very own specifications
Maximilian von Grundherr: Our goal has always been to develop our own battery modules and have them built
But that does not mean that we are going to cut corners when it comes to the quality and safety of our storage systems
we managed to bring our error rate down to 1.5 percent
we want to further improve the speed and quality of our customer service
It is the key support for our specialist partners and the retailers
What those value most with us is that work with them as equals and take their needs and criticism seriously
70 percent of our units are sold in combination with a cloud solution
Our Cloud also allows the use of the electricity for heat pumps or to produce hot water
which perfectly meets our customers’ most important purchasing motive: independence from the utilities
which allows them to practically use their solar electricity for charging their EVS anywhere in Europe
That makes cloud solutions into a sort of extension cord for their solar installation: They can use their solar power when and where ever they want
for instance with children that have left the home to go to university and now live somewhere else in their student pad
Thomas Pilgram: The top capacity for our lithium units is currently at 30 kilowatt hours
30 kilowatt hours work really well in the segment of small businesses
We provide a special cloud solution to our installing company partners
with which they can address their commercial customers
That is an individualised version of our Power Cloud
which for instance allows the direct marketing of solar power
Because we want out partners and customers to cover as much of their roofs as possible with PV
Our recommendation: Put up there what will fit
Thomas Pilgram: When it comes to commercial storage
With the price for lithium cells coming down
in order to quickly adapt them to changing demands
High output is needed and an appropriate management system
and that does not only affect the hardware
There are different marketing cascades that one has to go through to sell the units
the price pressure is much higher in the commercial segment
I see our 30-kilowatt unit more as being suitable for larger residential buildings or in Australia
Because of the increased use of air conditioning and the extreme discrepancy in the prices between cheap off-peak and very expensive during the heat of the day
there is a greater demand for storage there
since it allows the storing of electricity during the off-peak in the night
which can then be used for cooling during the heat of the day
the efficiency of the batteries can go up quite significantly
In the other markets we intend to grow along with the market or at least keep pace
Maximilian von Grundherr: Growing sustainably is important to us
we have strengthened our equity base in order to be ready for 2018
This is not about selling as many storage units as possible
We want to further lower our error rate and continue to improve our service
And very important: We want to go on improving the cooperation with our installing company partners
The Austrian market is very close to our domestic market – in terms of language
the electricity market there allows us to offer great services
The UK or Czechia could also become interesting
These markets all have their own challenges
because each of them is different technologically and in terms of the dominant business model
Thomas Pilgram: Our partners among the installing companies are our major sales channel
it is not all about the most inexpensive equipment
our partner companies are distributed fairly evenly
apart from just a few spots of the map that are not covered
but do not intend to increase the number of companies much further
It is more about that our partners understand our overall mission and implement that together with us
we started a deal at the end of last year: If the installing company or their customer decides to switch to a BMW i3
then we cover the lease payments for the first year
That is very popular – and an important incentive to buy for the customers
The interview was conducted by Heiko Schwarzburger

The German battery manufacturer said this week its residential storage systems were automatically switched to a regulated stand-by mode in Germany
The background to the remote shutdown is three reports of explosions in houses in which Senec products were installed
After the firefighters brought the battery outside the building
From pv magazine Germany
German battery provider Senec announced this week its residential storage systems were automatically switched to a regulated stand-by mode
The remote shutdown relates to three products from the company: the Senec.Home V3 hybrid; Senec.Home V3 hybrid duo; and Senec.Home V2.1
The manufacturer describes the move as a “purely precautionary measure,” in a notice to the system operators published on its Facebook page
“This is a voluntary and preventive measure
There are no indications that there are any technical problems with our systems,” said Senec
The background to the remote shutdown is three reports of explosions in houses in which Senec storage systems were installed
in Germany's southern region of Baden-Württemberg
reported an explosion in an apartment building last week
a house covered in smoke and a roof window that had been torn out
were explored,” says the report from the fire brigade
A heavily smoky boiler room was discovered in the basement
the battery storage installed in the basement detonated due to a technical defect and subsequently caused a smoldering fire in the basement
The pressure wave pushed several windows and doors outwards
and the entire roof structure was lifted,” the fire department said
A technician from local utility EnBW switched the building off
a master electrician pulled the fuses and then the battery was dismantled
“The battery was carried out of the basement by five people wearing breathing apparatus and it ignited again in the open air
There it was extinguished and later placed in a vat of water to cool down
The house is currently no longer habitable,” the Bodnegg fire department continued
Since there were no people in the building
and no one was injured in the other incidents either
“Since the issue of safety is our top priority
decided to take this clear step,” the Leipzig-based company stated
“The cause of the events has not yet been conclusively determined
There are no indications that the battery was the cause of the explosion
Even external experts who were immediately involved do not assume that the storage devices led to the explosions,” Senec writes to its customers
“We assume that we will maintain the standby mode for a few days,” the company went on to say
Remote shutdown is not possible for storage devices that are not connected to the internet
operators should contact their specialist partner or the Senec hotline
the photovoltaic inverter is still active and direct consumption and the feeding of solar power is therefore possible
“The only thing that does not happen in the stand-by mode is that battery power is not stored and drawn as it is galvanically isolated from the power flow,” the company said in its letter to customers
Senec promises specific information on restarting as soon as there is more clarity about the facts that led to the deflagration
Senec was initially unable to obtain further information on the specific number of storage systems that had been shut down and the locations of other incidents
An inquiry from pv magazine has remained unanswered
Li batteries are a dangerous alternative for storage and automobiles
hydrogen and batteries are all hazardous in different ways and all need to be managed accordingly
it will be interesting to hear what the root cause was
Western Australia’s regional power provider
has commenced the second stage of its Onslow microgrid project
which will provide local residents and businesses with access to low-cost solar and energy storage systems
German storage provider Senec has been chosen to supply batteries to the project
The project infrastructure includes a new transmission line and a gas-fired modular power station
The coastal town of Onslow is in the box seat to become the home of one of Australia’s largest distributed energy resource microgrid
which targets providing more than 50% of the town’s electricity
The project is being delivered by Western Australia’s government-owned regional utility Horizon Power and is aiming to integrate traditional thermal generation with solar panel and battery storage systems to maximise renewable energy penetration
the McGowan Government launched Stage Two of the Onslow project
which will deliver solar and battery storage systems to locals at reduced rates
Horizon Power has signed a contract with Western Australian company Mechanical Project Services (MPS) to deliver and install the solar and battery storage systems to Onslo customers
the systems will be integrated with Horizon Power’s Distributed Energy Resources Management System
the software platform designed to orchestrate the various energy sources in a coordinated manner ensuring renewables are maximised while protecting the systems’ stability
Horizon Power General Manager Commercial Services and Finance
Sami Zouad said the opportunity to access solar and battery systems at a reduced rate would provide Onslo customers with the ability to reduce their own electricity costs
while allowing Horizon Power to demonstrate a high-renewables energy future
is helping Horizon Power to prepare for this future,” Zouad said
“The project delivers on our commitment to the Onslow community and the state
to enable a significant expansion of renewable energy onto our networks which can be managed for the benefit of customers and Horizon Power.”
Stage Two of the project also includes the construction of a centralized 1 MW solar farm and 1 MWh network battery
This follows the completion of Stage One of the project in July 2018
which involved the construction and commissioning of a gas-fired power station and associated infrastructure
The Onslow project was initiated in 2016 by Horizon Power
Chevron Australia and Western Australia’s State Government
with the goal to deploy a mix of distributed renewables
modular gas powered generation and battery storage aimed at achieving a high level of renewable energy across the town
Chevron’s massive Wheatstone LNG project has provided a financial contribution for Horizon Power to build the power infrastructure for both stages
Horizon Power has selected Germany’s Senec to equip the project with smart battery storage systems for the optimal use of solar power and local network support
As part of the project that seeks to demonstrate that Onslow can sustainably and reliably be supplied with clean electricity in conjunction with larger traditional and utility scale renewable generation plants
as well as the intelligent control of the microgrid
Senec’s energy storage systems will be offered at generous discounts
The storage provider said the ability to integrate its batteries with Horizon Power’s DERMS played an important role in Senec’s selection
The commitment to local engineering and technical support was an important criterion for Horizon Power in selecting the partner
“Each of Senec’s batteries will be integrated with Horizon Power’s DERMS
the centralized control system that will “orchestrate” DER at times when intelligent control is required to maintain reliability of the microgrid,” the storage provider said in statement
Managing Director of Senec Australia said customer-side solar power and storage was a perfect solution for communities like Onslow
a sunny coastal town in the sparsely populated Pilbara region
“We are delighted we can help to ensure people have a reliable and sustainable power supply there”
we are demonstrating our know-how and commitment to the Australian market.”
Only weeks before Senec’s first shipment of residential batteries arrived in Australia last year, the battery provider was acquired by Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW)
modified slightly from the ones sold in Germany
are available with a capacity ranging from 2.5 kWh to 10 kWh

Every week we introduce you to one of the movers and shakers of some of the leading companies in the solar and renewables industries:
Last week you got to meet Fabrizio Limani of Panasonic
Now it is the turn of Stefan Dietrich of Senec to answer our six questions:
I guess dinner with a great thinker like John Stuart Mill might be interesting
I would eradicate the hatred and sheer stupidity that brings us nationalism
We could then concentrate on important things
That our solutions empower people by giving them the means to produce and use their own energy in a sustainable and climate-friendly way
home owners at least don't have to wait for politicians to do something
Nearly two-thirds of all solar storage systems sold in Germany come from these four suppliers
about 16,800 photovoltaic storage systems were sold in the country in the first half of the year
Falling prices and an attractive rooftop market are driving demand upwards
Demand for residential PV is growing in Germany
and with it also the installation of storage systems
According to market analysis conducted by EuPD Research
a total of 16,800 storage systems were deployed in the first half of this year in the country
Sonnen continues to be the leading provider of PV home storage systems in Germany with a 23% market share
an increase of 1% compared to full year 2016
E3 / DC and LG Chem with a market share of 14% each
Around two thirds of the storage systems sold in Germany in the first six months of 2017 came from these suppliers
The increase in sales was attributable to the substantial growth in small rooftop PV systems ranging in size from 3 kW to 10 kW
22,200 installations were installed in the first half-year (up 28% y-on-y)
prices for PV home storage have fallen further
The decrease of the KfW storage subsidy as of June 1 also had a “sales-promoting effect”
the analysts raised their expectations for the development of the German PV storage market for the current year
EuPD Research now expects 33,500 newly installed systems for this year
further sales for storage in Europe are showing a positive development
which is mostly flanked by public funding programs,” says Martin Ammon
the 16,800 newly installed PV home storage systems represent 75% of the total volume in Europe
“We are very pleased with this result and that we can further extend our lead to the direct competitors,” says Philipp Schröder
Solarwatt is ranked fifth among the largest storage providers in Germany with a market share of 7%
Varta and Mercedes have a percentage of 5% each
The top 10 are rounded out by LG Electronics

Desire and strength. The Primavera had to win to revive their chances in Europe

What was projected as a first outlet centre in Slovakia will turn into offices and showrooms
The developer of the D1 Outlet City project
has changed the original function of the buildings
Also the name will change to D1 Expo Business Centre
the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported
“The object will not be used for sales to end consumers
but it will serve as a wholesale and promotion centre for companies,” said Ivan Čarnogurský
The company has already introduced the investor of the project
Chinese industrial group Jiangsu Weitian Chemical Group
which has put €10 million into the new business centre
The D1 Expo Business Centre should open in late June
The new business centre currently occupies 10,000 square metres
but the plan is to expand the area to 100,000 square metres in the future
Čarnogurský says they have already signed agreement with 30 firms
Among the first tenants will be wholesalers with construction technologies
Most of them will use the nearby warehouses
“We are preparing 80 administrative units for our partners in D1 Expo Business Centre,” Čarnogurský said
adding that they can establish here their central European or European administrative headquarters
The new strategy is based on the fact that Chinese companies that enter the European market do not want to rely only on distributors
rent new spaces and deal with distribution
“They want to do business under their own name,” Ján Janek of Eusahub company
Jiangsu Weitian Chemical Group chose Senec mostly due to Slovakia’s membership in the European Union and the eurozone
as well as its connection to crucial western and central European markets
“The D1 Expo Business Centre is interesting for its effort to bring non-European companies under one roof
where they can share their experiences and knowledge from the European market,” said Lin Shengqin
CEO and co-owner of Jiangsu Weitian Chemical Group
She added that the D1 Park has possibilities for further growth
The developer originally introduced the project under the name D1 Outlet City seven years ago
Since then it has changed the date of opening several times
and even lost its fight with another outlet centre near Voderady (close to Trnava) which opened in 2013
It has also faced financial problems and struggled to attract some tenants
Thus analysts perceive the change from outlet centre to administrative and logistics base for Asian investors as logical
It is possible that another outlet close to Bratislava would not be successful as also the outlet centre in Voderady has problems with visitors
Company D1 Expo-Business Centrum announced recently the construction of the D1 Business Park in Senec
which has been developing its activities on the market under the IPEC Group brand
announced recently the construction of the D1 Business Park in Senec
The park will offer smaller-sized units to companies because there is a huge lack of this type of commercial unit on the market
The flexible space can be easily adapted to the company’s needs
an issuing place or a place they can carry out all of their operations at once
multifunction zone connects industry and logistics with office space and other services for employees
Shared office already has their first users
Event space and gastronomy establishment will be available soon
stores and issuing places can be used by tenants as of next year
A Slovak developer has invested tens of millions of euros into the project and will gradually build three modern buildings with a total area of 28,000 m2 in the D1 Business park
The park should be available to tenants next summer
completing the offer of properties in the zone where logistic and commercial companies like Scania
The construction of the D1 Business Park in the new business zone is a response to the growing demand for modern
The trend of so-called universal commercial units is mainly available in western Europe where similar centres are being established on the outskirts of large cities
They represent an alternative for companies that house their operations
sales and storage of products under one roof
“We have long-term experience mainly in industrial development
we would like to complete the original zone with a new type of business space which is typical for its access from two sides and a larger portion of glass areas
This creates a nice environment suitable for shops
But there is also a number of smaller companies and enterprises from the machine industry interested in this space
a part of the building can become a store with a clearance of eight meters," said Pavel Klč
Head of Real Estate Development of the IPEC Group
Companies can rent out 250 m2 to 8,000 m2 in space and adapt it to their commercial model
The developer expects that the customers of such companies will have the opportunity to shop here
choose products in the showrooms or pick them up after shopping in the e-shop
The existing D1 Center building in the new business zone offers additional services
including short-term rent of conference rooms and the D1 Shared Office
The D1 Center is also considering widening its scope of services in commercial and retail operation - from gastronomy and fitness centres to printing and administrative services
It also offers offices with technical rooms or small store rooms measuring 120 m2 and up
These rooms will be available for the companies from the new business zone but also from its surroundings
Due to its location and range of services, the D1 Center, has the potential to become a multifunction center of the wider surroundings which includes not only the D1 Business Park but also adjacent logistic halls
IPEC Group ranks among the major providers of project management in the field of construction in Slovakia
the group has covered projects with a total usable area of 800,000 m2 and value in excess of €500 million
One of the biggest logistics zones in Slovakia and an employer of more than five thousand people
the D1 Park near Senec was established thanks to IPEC Group
Among IPEC Group’s seventy clients from five countries are Billa

Several discoveries have been made during the reconstruction
The Bratislava self-governing region started reconstruction of the synagogue in Senec in May 2018
Representatives of the region have been to see how the works are progressing
They checked both the interior and exterior of the national cultural monument
which is being transformed into a new multifunctional culture centre which should be in operation from the end of 2020
“Last year we spent about €200,000
and then another €900,000 on the reconstruction,” said Pavol Líška from the region
The overall cost of the reconstruction project
together with the terrain modification will cost almost €1.6 million
The work is continuing as planned – the front façade is repaired together with the stained-glass windows
Now the reconstruction will continue with the ceiling
changing the wooden roof frame and removing the inner pavement
The new building information-pavilion is also under construction
Currently they are starting the earthworks and a fence has been built around the whole building
The original non-functioning well was discovered during the construction and the mikveh
between the synagogue and the new pavilion has been unearthed
was found to be hiding the remains of the original foundations of the bema
a sort of pulpit from which the Torah was read
The findings were documented by the Regional Monuments Board
“Part of the synagogue will be given over to an exhibition of the history of Jewish culture in the Bratislava region,” said Agáta Mikulová
head of the Department of Culture and Tourism for the Bratislava self-governing region
The synagogue will serve as multifunctional culture hall

The long-term lack of employees was deepened by the pandemic
The Slovak Railway Company (ZSSK) is currently short of engine drivers
The lack of drivers was amplified by the holiday season and deepened by the pandemic
The expert training of new engine drivers have been suspended for a long time
said spokesperson Tomáš Kováč
adding that the transport company is dealing with the situation
Some trains were temporarily cancelled especially for the Senec – Bratislava-Petržalka
Nové Zámky – Bratislava
Malacky – Bratislava and Bratislava – Trnava routes
Kováč noted that ZSSK keenly feels the lack of engine drivers
conductors and servicemen in the long term
90 candidates training to become engine drivers could not finish the course,” the spokesperson said
“About the same number of the engine drivers have to be replaced every year because of retirement or another reason.”
ZSSK lacks about 100 to 135 engine drivers
ZSSK's position on the railway labour market is influenced by the concentration of private railway carriers who often offer work to young train drivers as soon as they leave the course
They usually choose to work for the carrier in the Czech Republic
It takes about 15 to 18 months to train them
They need a medical check to get permission to lead trains and must learn the obligatory knowledge of the concrete route
ZSSK believes that the situation with train drivers will be resolved soon
Kováč clarified that the cancelled trains provide reinforced suburban transport
the cancellation of which will bring the least problems in securing transport in the region
mostly passenger trains on the routes Bratislava - Malacky
so it is possible to use the trains that remained in the schedule," he emphasised
VTJ Koba Senec is this season playing in Slovakia's elite football division
After finshing first in the second division last year and thus qualifying for promotion to the premier league
Senec has played surprisingly well and currently holds down sixth place out of 16 teams after four games.Senec's Superliga promotion almost never occurred
A controversial decision by the Slovak Football Union overturned the results of a match played between ŠKP Devín and Senec in early June
which nullified a Senec victory and meant that Devín moved up to the Superliga instead
was based on the argument that one of the Senec players had been ineligible to play in June because he had received a yellow card in 1997 while playing for a different team

A controversial decision by the Slovak Football Union overturned the results of a match played between ŠKP Devín and Senec in early June
which nullified a Senec victory and meant that Devín moved up to the Superliga instead
Senec immediately filed a protest and accused the Devin ownership and the Slovak Football Union of acting in collusion
Senec players were reported to have wept with disappointment
and over 300 fans threatened a hunger strike in support of their home team
and Senec was awarded its first berth in the Superliga
Milan Lončík of ŠKP Devín said that his squad held no hard feelings against the Senec club
"We are sorry that we aren't in the league
but we are not angry at Senec for making it over us," he said on August 17
the team faces another uphill battle - avoiding relegation next year
Thanks to a plan to cut the Superliga's 16 teams to just 10 next year
the 1999-2000 season will be contested bitterly by clubs anxious to remain in the big league
Given the stakes and the importance of each result
the underdog Senec club's cinderella start has been the biggest surprise of the young season
Senec won their first Superliga game ever by defeating Dubnica 1-0 on the road
and returned the following week for a 2-2 draw against a powerful Trenčín squad
The unbeaten streak stretched to three matches as Senec won their home debut 1-0 against last place Humenne
Week 4 brought the upstart Senec squad its first loss
Senec again faced a road battle as they travelled to Ružomberok
a club which was also unbeaten and tied for first with Senec
using the match to send a message to the rest of the league
"We are doing well," said Senec manager Štefan Mrva
"The excitement of playing in the Superliga for the first time has created some enthusiasm
Mrva said he had not lost contact with reality
noting that the first two Senec victories were notched against two of the worst teams in the league
"The early schedule has been relatively easy
More difficult matches await us," he remarked
Mrva added that the club's approach to this season has not differed from past years in terms of player training
the club had been able to land six high-quality players since last season
a feat they couldn't have managed without Superliga billing
Joining Senec were Czechs Martin Švejnoha
Ales Hellebrandt and Ján Zemlík
Senec hopes that the new players will merge with last year's second division champion roster to ensure Senec a top-nine Superliga finish in its first year
The league has defended the change from 16 to 10 teams as encouraging a higher level of quality and competition throughout the division
"They want to improve the quality of the league
but cutting teams won't improve the quality," he said
"The quality of play in Slovakia won't improve until football at minor-league levels is properly prepared for and coached
not just the grey-haired supporters the party is famous for
came out to hear members of the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) party denounce the Mikuláš Dzurinda government in west Slovakia's Senec on September 6.Most of the speakers' arrows were aimed at the current government's economic policies
which the HZDS says have caused the nation's 18 per cent unemployment rate and have brought hardship on many families."It's impossible to accept [Deputy PM for Economy Ivan] Mikloš's thesis that we shouldn't produce groceries if we can import them cheaply
This is nonsense," said former Finance Minister Sergej Kozlík

I keep hearing people say 'We are not doing well
and we'll help you to get back into government so our lives improve'," said Katarína Tóthová
a former deputy PM in the 1994-1998 Vladimír Mečiar administration
speaking to The Slovak Spectator after the rally
which despite a recent tumble in the polls stands a strong chance of winning September 20-21 elections
has dominated political life in Slovakia since its founding in 1991
party leader Mečiar has been ostracised by Western governments and domestic political parties for his authoritarian policies while in power in the mid-1990s
The West has even said Slovakia has no chance of being accepted to Nato this fall if Mečiar returns to power
Signs of how much the nation remains divided over Mečiar were visible in the 250-strong Senec crowd as well
because they blame everything on Hungarians," said Margita
"I came here because of the attractions and because it's fun for my children
not to see the party," said a 36-year-old lady who declined to give her name
said they had come to "relax and listen to these thieves"
Party sympathisers and critics alike enjoyed free stew
brought murmurs of agreement from the crowd
one of 12 HZDS members of parliament at the meeting
complained that while the "HZDS has the best and the most experts
even other parties admit that," it had been isolated in the media
They really have been repressed in the media," said Marián
the rally had many lighter moments as well
When asked how he intended to reduce unemployment
drawing a laugh from some and rolled eyes from others
A little girl was brought on stage at the end of the meeting to deliver a wish to MPs: "I hope you win
but the music continued until late evening
"I voted for the HZDS as a first-time voter
I was better off when they were in government
and that's why I'm going to vote for them
"There are some things I would like to ask Mečiar
but I don't want my vote to go to Dzurinda," he added
