A name that's very familiar to L-P High School alums and fans is taking over head coaching duties for the school's varsity boys basketball squad the L-P High School Board of Education approved hiring John Senica as the next L-P boys basketball head coach He's been a varsity assistant the past 3 years Before that Senica coached boys and girls basketball at various levels for more than a decade Senica replaces Jim Cherveny who resigned in March saying he wanted to spend more time with his family ExpandL-P's Josh Senica (21) fights for a rebound during a game last season Senica averaged 17.9 points and 10.5 rebounds per game last season For the first time in more than a decade, the La Salle-Peru boys basketball team will have a new coach at the helm. However, new coach John Senica is familiar with the program and the players in it. Senica, a 1990 La Salle-Peru graduate, has served as an assistant coach in the program; has a son, senior standout Josh, on the team; and previously has coached most of the roster. “The transition has been very smooth for the simple reason I’ve coached or coached against pretty much every one of these kids,” Senica said. “So I know them very well, and they know me very well. They know my expectations and I know what they’re capable of and what they can do.” While familiar with the program, Senica said he’ll be bringing a new philosophy to the Cavaliers. “We’ve made a lot of changes. We’re going to be more aggressive on the offensive and defensive ends of the court. It’s going to be a little bit different look. We’re going to try to be a little bit more up-tempo on the offensive end, and on the defensive end we’re going to try to pick up the aggressiveness and pace there, as well.” The Cavs, who went 16-15 last year, have a strong returning core to implement the scheme changes, including top two scorers Josh Senica (17.9 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and Seth Adams (10.7 ppg, 2.1 apg). Jack Jereb was a starter last season, as well, while Nolan VanDuzer, Brendan Boudreau, Mikey Hartman also saw significant action. “We’re going to be more aggressive on the offensive and defensive ends of the court. It’s going to be a little bit different look. We’re going to try to be a little bit more up-tempo on the offensive end, and on the defensive end we’re going to try to pick up the aggressiveness and pace there, as well.” Josh Senica, who was NewsTribune All-Area first team, and Adams once again will be counted on to be the team’s leading scorers. “Josh and Seth did a lot of scoring for us last year and they’re going to do what they always do. They’re going to come out and give everything they have and, quite honestly, I think it’s going to be hard to stop those two,” John Senica said. “The way our new offense is, we could have four or five people in double figures. Anybody could step in and have double figures. Everybody’s got a role. It’s whoever can produce that night, whoever is getting open shots and what are matchups are. “Everybody on our team is going to be able to put points on the board.” The Cavs also have some size with Boudreau, Andy Medina, Richie Santiago and Nolan VanDuezer. “We have some bigger guys who can score if they get the ball underneath,” John Senica said. “They’re going to be able to step in and bang down low with how strong these guys are. We’re going to have a little more depth at the post position.” John Senica said the Cavs will have more depth at guard as well with Cordell Wheatly, Brady Romagnoli, Bob Baldin, Andrew Bollis, Erick Satelo and Nick Olivero. “We have a lot of guards who are going to be able to step in,” Senica said. “We have a lot of guys who are going to be able to play a lot of minutes. Everybody on the team is going to have a role. “They all play together very well. There’s no individualism. I think that’s a big strength because when you play together, I just think you get a better product and these kids are doing that very well.” John Senica said the Cavs aren’t looking too far ahead in terms of goals. “We want to be very competitive,” he said. “We want to be in every game to where we have a chance to win the game. We’re not looking too far down the road. We have a good foundation built right now and we want to keep getting better. We’re going to see where it takes us.” Copyright © 2023 Shaw Local News Network John Senica has been associated with La Salle-Peru basketball for a long time Senica played for the Cavaliers under legendary coach Chips Giovanine before graduating in 1990 He also has served as an assistant coach for the boys and girls teams Senica is taking over the boys program at his alma mater whose hiring was approved by the L-P Board of Education at a special meeting Monday There’s been a lot of good coaches who have come through the program It’s something I never dreamed I’d be able to do “I appreciate [superintendent] Steve Wrobleski and the L-P board allowing me to have this opportunity and I want to thank everybody who has helped me get to where I am as a coach.” After serving as an assistant under former coach Jim Cherveny for the past three seasons, and before that under Hollis Vickery in the girls program for about a decade, Senica decided to go for the head job. “I’ve coached these kids for a long time, and I wanted to help get them through the program,” Senica said. “I’m really just very passionate about L-P, and it’s something I really wanted to do. I really want to coach at the school, take over the program and see what I can do with it.” Wrobleski said it’s nice to have an alumnus lead the program. “Coach Senica has a long history with L-P basketball, both as a former student-athlete and coach,” Wrobleski said in a news release. “It’s exciting when you’re able to hire a Cavalier alum who also brings a deep understanding of the game.” Senica is very familiar with the roster he’ll take over, as his son, Josh, will be a senior. Senica has coached players in the program at the grade-school level at Holy Family along with serving as an assistant at L-P. “I’ve coached a lot of the kids who are in the program for many years, from grade school up, so the transition is going to be easy as far as that goes,” Senica said. “Taking over for coach Cherveny and John Riva as his assistant, it’s going to be very difficult to fill those shoes and do as good of a job as they did.” Senica inherits a roster that returns three starters from last season in Josh Senica, Seth Adams and Jack Jereb. Josh Senica was a unanimous All-Interstate 8 Conference and NewsTribune All-Area first-team pick after averaging 17.9 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. “It’s going to be very special [to coach Josh his senior year],” Senica said. “Not many coaches can say they’ve done that or are going to do that. I’m very blessed and fortunate. It’s going to be an honor being his head coach as he finishes his career at L-P.” Senica, who played basketball at IVCC, said L-P fans will see some changes next season. “Coach Cherveny was a great coach and has a lot of wins. I hope I can produce like he did,” Senica said. “I do have some new ideas. I do have a little bit different philosophies. People are going to see a little bit of a change.” Cherveny led the Cavaliers to a 161-164 record, including 16-15 last season, and two regional championships in 12 seasons. “We are excited to keep John in the Cavalier family,” said L-P athletic director Mike Kuziel said in a news release. “His passion, determination, experience and leadership will build on our basketball tradition.” ExpandLa Salle-Peru boys basketball coach John Senica watches his team play Fieldcrest during the 49th annual Colmone Classic Senica was named the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 3A District 12 Coach of the Year Four NewsTribune area high school basketball coaches were named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District Coaches of the Year First-year La Salle-Peru coach John Senica was named the Class 3A District 12 Coach of the Year after leading the Cavaliers to a 24-9 record and their first regional championship since 2015-16 Fieldcrest’s Jeremy Hahn was selected as the Class 2A District 12 Coach of the Year and Earlville’s Gerald Fruit was named the Class 1A District 12 Coach of the Year Hahn guided the Knights to a 33-2 record to set a program record for wins along with a regional title and a sectional final appearance Fruit coached the Red Raiders to a program-best 28-5 record Mendota Holy Cross boys coaches Aaron Eddy and Lucas Tillman were named Class A District 12 Coach of the Year in seventh grade and eighth grade while Oglesby Washington seventh grade boys coach Tyler DeBrock was named Class AA District 12 Coach of the Year and Putnam County seventh grade girls basketball coach Nicholas Heuser was selected as Class AA District 12 Coach of the Year The coaches of the year will be honored at a luncheon May 4 at Illinois State University’s CEFCU Arena in Normal Princeton High School senior Bennett Williams was one of 26 student-athletes across the state named to the 2024 IHSA All-State Academic Team. I didn’t know I had that many until this year, honestly. It feels good to get that under my belt.” Senica reached 1,000 points when he knocked down a 3 with 2:36 left. He is the 19th L-P player to reach the milestone and the first since Drake Weber in 2021. L-P's Josh Senica scores his 1000th point on this shot against Hall on Tuesday, Nov., 28, 2023 in AJ Sellett Gymnasium at L-P High School. (Scott Anderson) “I knew I was close,” Josh Senica said about going to the fourth quarter. “So I was like, ‘I’m going to shoot and hopefully I get hot.’ Coach kind of set up some plays for me to get open, so it was nice.” After his 3 went through the net, the game was stopped while the fans cheered, L-P athletic director Steve Hanson gave a short speech to recognize the feat and John Senica presented a commemorative ball to his son at half court. “I knew I was close. So I was like, ‘I’m going to shoot and hopefully I get hot.’ Coach kind of set up some plays for me to get open, so it was nice.” “It meant the world to me,” John Sencia said of the opportunity to give Josh the ball. “He’s worked so hard through the years, especially these last four years. He’s put a lot of time and effort into it and I’m very happy for him because he deserves it.” John Senica said his son’s ability to score in different ways helps make him such a dangerous offensive weapon. “I think what makes Josh such a good scorer is he’s so versatile,” John Senica said. “He can drive to the basket. He’s so big, so he could just post up. And he can hit the 3. That’s what he’s really worked on. He had the inside game the last couple years, but this past year and the end of last season, he really worked on the 3-point shot and it’s really started to show.” Josh Senica said enjoyed hitting the milestone at home. The L-P student section pulled out headshots of Senica on sticks and several posters to celebrate the achievement. “It was nice to have all the fans here,” Josh Senica said. “It was a fun time.” The game was tight early as the teams traded baskets throughout the first half with L-P taking a 12-10 lead after eight minutes. L-P pushed its lead to double digits with a 10-2 run to start the second quarter and led 33-19 at halftime. However, the Red Devils rallied in the third quarter as Payton Dye drained three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the quarter as Hall got as close as 39-31. Hall's Payton Dye sinks a shot over L-P's Seth Adams on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023 in AJ Sellett Gymnasium at L-P High School. (Scott Anderson) “L-P is a 3A team. They’re 5-0. For 3 1/2 quarters, we played right with them, so I’m happy with that. I’m happy with our man-to-man defense. We gave up 73 points, but that’s one of the best teams on our schedule. If we keep playing like that, we’ll be fine.” After Hall’s rally, Eric Sotelo scored on an assist from Seth Adams then drained a 3, and Senica scored on back-to-back possessions to extend the L-P lead to 48-35. The Cavs led 52-35 after three quarters and led by as many as 23 points in the fourth. “Hall did a great job,” John Senica said. “They’re a good ballclub. Coach Filippini had them ready for us. The first half, they caught us on our toes. They hit some nice shots and they were playing tough. “We picked up the intensity (after Hall’s rally in the third). Defensively, I went to a 2-2-1. We wanted to try to throw something different at them because their guys were tired. They did a really good job of breaking that and they got some nice 3s out of that. So we had to to back to man and I think our guys realized, ‘Hey, they’re here to play. We have to pick this up.’” Senica had his fifth double-double of the season with 26 points and 10 rebounds for L-P (5-0), while Sotelo had nine points and Adams and Nolan Van Duzer added eight each. Dye finished with 20 points for Hall (3-2), while Braden Curran added eight. January 06, 2020 at 5:19 pm CSTExpandAutoplayImage 1 of 4The Senica family on Monday confirmed that they closed on the sale of Deer Park to an entrepreneur with Ottawa roots. (NewsTribune photo) The Senica family of La Salle has sold Senica's Deer Park Golf Club, formerly Deer Park Country Club, to an Ottawa native and philanthropist who made his fortune in the aircraft industry. "Yes, we finally closed the deal," said Jeff Senica, president of Senica Investments LLC, when contacted late Monday afternoon. Senica said he has been talking for several years with Jim Downey, one of the founders of EnCore Interiors and a designer of molded fiberglass airliner interiors. Senica said it's his understanding Deer Park, which is about 120 years old and has been updated, modernized and expanded during the past 40 years, could get a new clubhouse. The current one, built in the 1970s, "is starting to show its age," Senica said. He said he and Downey reached an agreement on the deal for a sum Senica did not disclose, and lawyer Nick Balestri helped with the closing on Monday. "He did it through one of his corporations," Senica said. Downey, who's originally from Ottawa, made his fortune by designing bins and other interior features, for passenger jets, Senica said. Downey, who spends much of his time in Southern California, purchased the Ferracuti Mansion in Ottawa a couple of years ago. "He likes putting money back into the La Salle-Peru-Ottawa area," Senica said. Senica also said Downey is active with a lot of children's charities. He said, however, he did not know exactly who will be able to play at the course — whether it will be private, a country club or public. "I wasn't in on that board meeting," Senica said. Senica said Jesse Cavanaugh has been asked to manage Deer Park for Downey, and the greenskeeper will stay with the place for continuity. The Senicas bought the course from the country club membership just over four years ago, in October, and made investments in the course treatments as well as a lot of tree cutting. Much of the tree cutting took place (at both courses) because of ash trees getting killed by the emerald ash borer. The Senica Family continues to operate the 18-hole Senica's Oak Ridge Golf Course and banquet hall. When asked what his family might do with proceeds from the sale, Senica was not specific.
