After finishing first in the Extraliga regular season
the playoffs await for the club that's stunned Slovak hockey
the Spišská Nová Ves men's ice hockey team could not afford a bus to Trnava
they lifted the trophy after finishing top of the Slovak Extraliga – Slovakia's premier hockey competition – in the regular season
It is the kind of transformation that is the stuff of sports documentaries. An ice hockey club that once teetered on the edge of existence is now knocking on the door of history, wrote the Hospodárske Noviny daily
The Rysy (Lynxes) are no longer just a feel-good story: they are a force
they pushed all the way through to the Extraliga play-offs final before falling just short
there is a quiet belief that this season could be the one
is a landmark moment for Spišská Nová Ves
earning them the Dušan Pašek Cup
But the big prize – the championship – is still up for grabs
Play-off hockey is an entirely different beast
as last year’s regular-season winners
discovered when they were unceremoniously dumped out in the first round
So what is behind Spišská Nová Ves’s rise
a long-time analyst of the Slovak Extraliga
points to three key factors: “A strong core team of Slovaks
That coaching switch may have been decisive
The club parted ways with Jason O’Leary in November
with Vladimír Záborský stepping in
“Záborský knew the players
and the team responded,” says Rajtar
American centre Connor Ford has been a difference-maker
while the Canadian duo of Zack Andrusiak and Greg Meireles are producing of more than one point per game
Add in the leadership of captain Branislav Rapáč and the experience of veterans like Juraj Valach
and it is a balanced roster with genuine depth
Their success has inevitably raised the question: would they have topped the table if favourites HC Košice had not been battling with injuries all season
But that should not diminish what Spišská Nová Ves has achieved
they have outpaced some of the biggest clubs in the country
But Spišská Nová Ves are not here to make up the numbers
They have already rewritten the script of Slovak hockey
they must write the perfect ending to claim the Vladimír Dzurilla Cup
A horrific knife attack at a secondary school in Spišská Nová Ves
claimed the lives of a teacher and a student on Thursday
while another student was seriously injured
identified as 18-year-old “S.S.,” was detained shortly after the attack
which occurred during school hours while the facility was full of students and teachers
“Two women aged 18 and 51 suffered fatal injuries,” Danka Čapkova of Slovakia’s emergency services confirmed
The deceased teacher was later identified as the school’s deputy headmistress
An 18-year-old male student remains hospitalised in serious but stable condition
The emergency services also treated a 51-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman at the scene for acute stress reactions
Slovak police chief Ľubomír Solák revealed that authorities received a distress call at 11:49 GMT
Solák stated police officers arrived at the scene within three minutes
adding that the attacker fled the site but was apprehended at 12:56 GMT in a forest outside the town’s perimeter
describing him as having cropped blond hair
and asked for public assistance during the brief manhunt
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok disclosed that the attacker had a history of academic excellence but had transferred from another school in Kežmarok after being expelled for threatening fellow students
The Markíza TV station reported that the suspect had been flagged for aggressive behaviour before the incident
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini condemned the attack as a “real tragedy,” adding
“No problem in the world can be solved with a knife or another weapon.”
The Student Council of Secondary Schools issued a statement on social media
saying that “hatred and violence have no place in our society
let alone schools where young people should feel safe.”
This attack is one of several recent violent incidents in European schools

The district of Spišská Nová Ves may be small
but it boasts two of Slovakia's most cherished tourist attractions: Slovak Paradise National Park and Spiš Castle
These landmarks draw substantial crowds annually
not just from Slovakia but also from neighbouring Poland and Hungary
For those who prefer to diversify their holiday beyond hiking in the forest or exploring historic ruins
Spiš offers alternative attractions
including distinctive gastronomic experiences
Dana Říhová studied hotel management in Kežmarok
she began working as a receptionist at the Čingov Hotel in Slovak Paradise
a turbulent period for businesses due to a decline in tourism
she decided to gain more experience abroad
where she worked as both a waitress and a receptionist
"I also wanted to save money for a flat
so what was supposed to be a one-year stay turned into seven years," Říhová recalls
they both felt they had gained enough experience to open their own restaurant
They chose Spišská Nová Ves
Říhová’s hometown and a gateway to the popular Slovak Paradise
"We bought a house intending to open a restaurant
but the authorities imposed unreasonable parking requirements on us
we sold the property before opening and decided to rent a space in the city centre instead," she explains
the couple opened a restaurant named Nostalgie (Nostalgias) in a historic building in the city centre
"We wanted to create a place where guests could reminisce about the good old days of cinema and music—a time before the internet—and take a moment to slow down
we chose a plural name," she elaborates
The restaurant’s interior is adorned with photos from old black-and-white films
as well as historical artefacts and furniture
most of which come from the owner’s personal collection
Our detailed travel guide to the Tatras will introduce you to the entire region surrounding the Tatra mountains
They have established an international cuisine
The pleasant interior perfectly complements the high-quality international fare
with asparagus in the spring and goose and duck in the autumn
providing delicious food is not enough for the restaurant owner
she began organising wine tastings for enthusiasts and those interested in experiential gastronomy
"We hosted over 50 people at the event
and everyone left satisfied," says Říhová
She relishes the challenge of creating new experiences
"This profession demands total commitment; there is little time left for family life
It’s both a mission and a sacrifice," she adds
The restaurant employs approximately 20 people during the off-season
it hires an additional 25 part-time staff to cater to guests on its large outdoor terrace
The owner has observed a growing number of visitors over the years
not just from the Czech Republic and Poland
but also from cyclists and motorcyclists exploring the region
the restaurant focuses on attracting locals and business clients
despite Nostalgie not offering a daily special lunch menu
Říhová believes that tourism development requires reduced government bureaucracy and greater collaboration between accommodation providers and restaurateurs
"We should be recommending each other's establishments," she emphasises

For those who have explored Slovak Paradise and the historic town—known for its many monuments and boasting the tallest church tower in Slovakia—the Spiš countryside offers a new adventure
Often referred to by hoteliers as the "Tuscany of the East," Spiš is celebrated for its stunning
A particularly intriguing destination is the mysterious church tower in the abandoned village of Miloj
Legend has it that the village sank into the ground as divine punishment for its inhabitants' sins
the village naturally disappeared during the Middle Ages
standing alone amidst the fields as a silent witness to history
the access road is nothing more than a dirt track
and no signs on the main road hint at the fascinating landmark off to the side
home to the stunning mansion and summer house of the noble Mariássy family
The area boasts a large park and well-marked cycling paths around the mansion
you can visit the baroque-classicist Csáky family mansion in Hodkovce
This manor offers opportunities for social tourism; employees with mental disabilities help maintain and enhance the grounds while crafting souvenirs for visitors
the manor clearly suffers from a lack of funding for full restoration
the expansive French park nearby is well worth exploring
Hodkovce is located near the village of Žehra
the church is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Opposition councillors adopt a resolution condemning mayor's actions
the Belarusian flag was hoisted right next to the Slovak one
Many citizens and opposition town councillors alike were outraged by the action
According to the daily, in its Facebook post the town referenced historian Marcel Maniak
who said that the nationality of more than 50 dead Red Army soldiers is known
This prompted one resident to ask why the Belarusian ambassador was invited instead of the Ukrainian one
The Town Hall replied that the former was invited by Rusiňák
"The town published a post on the official page
The state administration is separate from the local government
the town did not have to participate in this in any way
I expected the town leadership to be sensitive to the context of today's geopolitical situation
and will consistently think about what message it is sending," the resident argued
Alexander Lukashenko once again became the country's president in disputed elections
The EU has enacted sanctions against the country for its support of Russia in the invasion of Ukraine
as well as the repression and violation of human rights
Town councillor Adnan Akram (Demokrati) also criticised the invitation
drawing attention to many Ukrainian refugees that found home in Spišská Nová Ves
"Imagine you're a child that was forced to leave their home due to war and found refuge in Slovakia
You're walking across a square and you spot a Belarusian flag hoisted and people under it
that adding it must be traumatic as it belongs to a country "that helps Russia in the killing of Ukrainian civilians
The councillor said that this is not the first time the mayor did something like this
In the past he wanted to use the town money to buy ivermectin
misinformation claimed that the drug was effective for the treatment and prevention of the disease
He also allowed SNS chair Andrej Danko to talk to a crowd during a cultural event ahead of elections
not right and tarnishing the good name of Spišská Nová Ves
Opposition councillors proposed and adopted a resolution condemning the mayor's actions on February 10
The resolution was adopted by 12 councillors
with one abstaining and four voting against
says that while members of the Silná Spišská club hold differing views on issues such as the war in Ukraine
"It was necessary to state that Spišská Nová Ves is not a city that engages with representatives of undemocratic regimes," said Baláž
A history teacher and students saved the only Jewish monument in Spišská Nová Ves over a decade ago
The train chugging alongside a Jewish graveyard in Spišská Nová Ves often jogs visitors’ memory about the tragic WWII events that took place in this eastern Slovak town and its wider area
the Nazis sent several transports of Jews off to camps on the territory of today’s Poland
making a stop at the intermediate stations in Žilina or Poprad
Jewish families living in or around Spišská Nová Ves – 699 adults and 333 children - were deported straight to the camps on May 28
Around 200 Jewish families lived in the town before the war
anti-Semitic attitudes began to surface in Spišská Nová Ves as early as the late thirties
members of Hitlerjugend and Spiš Germans burnt down the synagogue on Školská – then Hitler – Street
“Though the Jewish community declined in the town
one monument to the community has come through – the abandoned and dilapidated Jewish graveyard,” said Ružena Kormošová
a retired history teacher and a regional historian from the Pro Memory civic association
Supported by the town and the Central Union of Jewish Communities in Slovakia
Kormošová and several generations of students from the local grammar school on Školská Street have been restoring and taking care of the pre-war graveyard with 280 tombstones
“We need young people to see that life is not always fun
and that the threat of the hatred against each other and a lack of humanity have not vanished,” she maintained
As guides during the Weekend of Open Parks and Gardens
students come to the graveyard to recount to visitors the history and stories of local Jews
they also gather in late October to light 333 candles and commemorate the Jewish children from the 1942 family transport
“We promised to look after the tombstones,” Kormošová said
She added that a lot of work still needs to be done
Because Slovak Jews do not possess enough resources to preserve their cultural heritage
“We are immensely grateful to them,” said Oľga Hodálová
the vice-chair of the Central Union of Jewish Communities in Slovakia
the Jewish community has been awarding the Eugen Bárkány Award
named after the founder of the first Jewish museum in Slovakia
to people who maintain their Jewish heritage
At a November video-conference on the Jewish cultural heritage in Slovakia
Kormošová received the prize for her years-long research and projects focusing on the history of the Jews from the Spišská Nová Ves area
There were 800 Jewish communities and 800 graveyards in Slovakia before the war
“It's not about disrespect,” Hodálová continued
“Those who were supposed to look after the tombstones were deported; unfortunately
Tens of thousands of Slovak Jews were sent to their deaths during WWII by the authoritarian Jozef Tiso regime governing Slovakia
Kormošová started bringing stories of several local Jews to her fellow citizens again
It took her several months to write and publish a new book
Her students assisted her and co-authored the publication
Having studied old school photographs and school records from 1935-40
they tell 27 stories of the Jewish students and their families that lived in the Spišská Nová Ves area before and during WWII
Four years later they released a follow-up
“The story called A Jewish Boy is probably the saddest
His mother is believed to have died after his birth in 1940
was deported in the first months of 1942,” Kormošová sighed heavily
the father perished in Auschwitz a year after
The adoptive mother loved and wanted to save the Jewish boy
so she sent Štefan to a labour camp in Sereď so as not to be suspected by her neighbours
What happened to Štefan afterwards is a big unknown
but he is thought to have perished in Auschwitz
When his Jewish relatives returned to take the hidden boy home after the war
“Only on her death bed did the mother tell Štefan that his real name was Hugo
but she said nothing about his Jewish roots,” the historian said
Hugo learnt about his heritage many years later
Another story from Kormošová’s books
shared by Cynthia Drapkin from Northwood in northwest London
reveals how the Torah from Spišská Nová Ves ended up in Northwood’s Pinner Liberal Synagogue
who saved the Torah with the engraved metal name of Spišská Nová Ves on it,” Kormošová said
The married couple owned a gypsum mine a stone’s throw from the town
the Nazis considered them important in 1942
The couple survived and remained in Spišská Nová Ves after WWII
Several years after Arpád’s death
Sylvia visited her sister in Vienna and left for England
“Moving stuff out of her London house
her brother’s family had difficulties with a large heavy cabinet
which they could not get out through the door,” Kormošová said
they discovered a hidden compartment with the Torah
which was passed on to the Jewish community in Northwood in 1998
could recite each of the stories in her books
her interest in the history of this minority was sparked after she met Margita Teitelbaumová
a Holocaust survivor who lived in Spišská Nová Ves after the war
“I lost my first child,” the mother of three said
“and when I taught school pupils about WWII
I always asked myself: How could one man influence so many others into slaughtering innocent children?”
a young American Peace Corps volunteer who catalogued and cleared the derelict Jewish graveyard with his other team members at that time
deliver a key from the Jewish graveyard in Spišská Nová Ves to Kormošová after her death
The teacher did not know what to do with the key for two years
when she learnt about some Israelis jumping over the gate of the destroyed graveyard
After she shared her idea with her students in 2006
they decided to give her a hand and save the Jewish graveyard
which they – comprising different generations of students - have maintained ever since
“We have shown people that today’s generation of ‘computer children’ is interested in history and understands the importance of learning about the Holocaust and WWII,” said Kristína Hatalová
a student at the grammar school on Školská Street

After more than a month since becoming available to the public
the military bunker in the suburban recreation area of Schulerloch in Spišská Nová Ves
has already been visited by several dozen tourists
A helping hand in the heart of Europe offers a travel guide of Slovakia
The municipality restored the bunker and created a small world of military history inside it
Even many residents of the town did not know about the existence of the bunker from 1985
said Mária Dutková from the department of tourism and foreign relations at the town hall
“It was quite neglected and abandoned
renovate and repair it to such a state that it became a mini exhibition
We furnished the bunker with old military items to make it look authentic," Dutková described for the SITA news agency
Visitors to the bunker have the opportunity of viewing not only authentic military items from the 1960s to the 1980s
The mini-exhibition is dedicated to the memory of the activities of military unit 3521 in Spišská Nová Ves
Another unusual experience has been added to the tourist offer of the Spiš region thanks to this initiative
said the governor of the Košice Region
"It offers a unique adventure as well as being an important reminder of the milestones in history that shaped our region," he remarked on the occasion of the bunker's opening
added that it is one of the few military bunkers in the region preserved in good condition
The military shelter is among those that were built en masse in the second half of the 20th century
Access to the bunker after its renewal is possible in two ways

Status points are being awarded to attackers
Recently, two towns in eastern Slovakia have had problems with gangs of violent school pupils. A 20-year-old native of the town of Spišská Nová Ves has already been attacked three times, reports the Noviny.sk website
The gangs are even awarding points for the attacks
The 20-year-old man was recently attacked in front of his own mother
She described him being kicked in the head
and says that he is currently unable to work and is suffering from psychological trauma
Both parents also report being having been attacked by local children
When a reporter from private broadcaster TV Joj approached one young man from the group of alleged attackers he refused to talk on camera
He also wanted media coverage of the incidents to stop
According to the city police in Spišská Nová Ves
there are at least two groups of pupils from the 8th and 9th grades attacking people in the evening
both in the town centre and in more secluded locations
the gangs have introduced a points system that allows pupils to ascend within the hierarchy
with 10 points given for attacking a 60-year-old man and 20 points for a 50-year-old
The police say they have a list of 28 names and measures are already being taken
although they did not specify what these are
In nearby Poprad
similar groups have attacked young and older people alike
Police in the town say they have strengthened patrols
Play-off picture takes shape as Tipos Extraliga reaches semi-final stage
HKM Zvolen have reached the semi-finals of the Tipos Extraliga after clobbering regular-season winners HK Spišská Nová Ves 3-0 in Game 6 on 28 March
Zvolen have ousted the league’s top seed in the quarter-finals
The breakthrough came deep in the third period
It was the game’s turning point—and ultimately
Matej Macek and William Rapuzzi sealed it late
with the visitors chasing the game without a goalie.
“We came out much more aggressive in the third period
which surprised me a bit given how flat we’d looked in the first two,” admitted Zvolen head coach Peter Mikula
“It was always going to come down to a single goal—we got it
HC Košice needed just 20 minutes to make their own statement on Friday night
The five first-period goals in Trenčín silenced the home crowd and sent the Eastern giants through with a 7-2 win
“We were relentless early,” said Košice captain Michal Chovan
“That’s the level we need every game.”
The semi-final matchups are now set: Zvolen will face Košice
But for Spišská Nová Ves
“It was our best game of the series,” lamented head coach Vladimír Záborský
“But we couldn’t crack [Pavel] Kantor
It’s hockey karma—we lost this in the first three games.”

The attacker is reported to be an 18-year-old student
A knife attack at a grammar school in the quiet town of Spišská Stará Ves has left two dead and one critically injured
Emergency Medical Service officials confirmed the tragedy on early Thursday afternoon
with multiple response teams rushing to the scene
when the building was bustling with people
“This tragedy has touched the entire society
and the public to communicate with sensitivity and refrain from drawing any hasty conclusions,” said Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (Hlas) at a press conference in Spišská Stará Ves on Thursday evening
Spišská Stará Ves is a town of just over 2,000 residents in northern Slovakia
The popular tourist destination Červený Kláštor lies nearby
with traditional wooden raft trips launching just a few kilometres away on the Dunajec River
An 18-year-old student entered the school building armed with a knife
prompting authorities to warn residents via the town’s public address system about an armed individual at large
confirmed that police had alerted the municipality to the security incident
who was at the scene shortly after the tragedy
declined to provide further details and appeared visibly shaken
“This is something terrible,” he told Korzár
Police soon announced a manhunt for the suspect, identified only as S.S., a student at the school. His name is Samuel, according to media reports. He was apprehended after more than an hour
detaining the suspect in a forested area near Matiašovce
a town neighbouring Spišská Stará Ves
attending school on January 16 solely to sit for exams under the supervision of a commission
the attacker stabbed a mathematics-informatics teacher and deputy principal
The teacher has been identified as Mária Semančíková
Another 18-year-girl has been transported to a hospital in Poprad
The case is being investigated by the Office for Combating Organised Crime
The perpetrator’s motive remains under scrutiny
he is far from having a blank slate — and I’m not referring to his excellent academic record,” General Prosecutor Maroš Žilinka said Thursday evening
Authorities have yet to determine the potential punishment
as the legal classification of the act has not been finalised
A similar attack occurred in 2020 at a primary school in Vrútky
when a 22-year-old former student fatally stabbed the school’s deputy principal
injured two children and two adults during the rampage
was believed to be linked to bullying the assailant had experienced as a student at the school
Political leaders and parties took to social media on Thursday afternoon to condemn this violent attack at the grammar school in Spišská Stará Ves
describing it as a tragedy that underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to conflicts
“It is a genuine tragedy what happened today at the grammar school in Spišská Stará Ves,” President Peter Pellegrini wrote
“No problem in the world can be solved with a knife or any other weapon
A peaceful and civilised resolution of disputes
must be the goal of the entire nation and society.”
Prime Minister Robert Fico, himself a victim of a shooting incident last May, expressed condolences to the bereaved families
“It is difficult to comprehend what happened in Spišská Stará Ves,” he wrote
adding that he was gathering all relevant information about the case
According to TV Markíza
Samuel transferred to the school in Spišská Stará Ves from a grammar school in Kežmarok
from which he was allegedly expelled for threatening his classmates with an attack in the past
Martin Čupka, a former student and close friend of Semančíková, told Denník N that he met with the teacher just hours before the murder
Semančíková was dreading Samuel’s English exam
“She told me it would be best if that student had a restraining order
Korzár writes that Samuel stood out as an exceptional student at the grammar school in Spišská Stará Ves
His name frequently appeared in posts on the school’s official social media page
celebrating his achievements in various competitions
he won the district round of the German Olympiad
he represented his school in the Young European competition
conspiracy theories began circulating online
speculating about the young assailant’s motives
pointed out the non-governmental organisation Hoaxy a podvody
“Some disinformation profiles have already claimed that this is tied to progressive ideologies
and a supposed ‘arrival of America,’” the organisation noted in a post on social media
hinting that the student himself might deserve one
appeared to flout the premier’s call for discretion
Danko implied a tenuous connection between the student criticised by the premier and a separate attack in Spišská Stará Ves
Opposition politician and former prime minister Igor Matovič of the Slovensko party also seized on the controversy
“I call on Robert Fico to immediately step down as prime minister
as he has openly incited violence against students,” Matovič declared
The fallout from the Monday incident has escalated tensions
is now under police surveillance after controversial YouTuber Martin Daňo urged his followers to gather information on the teenager
Daňo managed to gain access to the school on Tuesday
followed by an aggressive intruder the next day
The school has become the target of hate speech
said Bratislava Region Governor Juraj Droba
“I appeal to the aggressors to stop immediately and let students
and staff live in peace,” Droba wrote
Matúš Šutaj Eštok of Hlas
also called on politicians to avoid inflaming tensions
I urge everyone to help calm the situation and not add fuel to the fire,” he said
The appeal comes just months after Šutaj Eštok himself sparked controversy by criticising grammar school students from Bratislava’s Bilíkova Gymnasium over their Halloween costumes
which depicted elderly supporters of PM Robert Fico
Šutaj Eštok shared a photo of the students
accusing them of exacerbating societal tensions

A project initiated by the Association for Culture
Education and Communication (ACEC) called Mission 1000 has been realized in the area of Spišská Nová Ves in the Slovak Republic
help mothers from marginalised communities during their pregnancy and after childbirth
therefore highlighting the crucial first 1,000 days from conception to the age of 2 years
we are building community capacity in pregnancy care during stay in the maternity ward and after discharge
we create communication bridges and develop relationships among communities,” explained ACEC director
and activities to develop parenting skills are almost inaccessible for parents who do not have enough financial resources“
The midwives operate in several villages in the Spiš Region
They realize activities with and for girls
pregnant women and stay-at-home mothers directly in the settlements
the midwives work at the Svet zdravia Hospital in the gynaecology and obstetrics
“We very much welcome the fact that they speak Romani and thus create a sense of security for these mothers and children
if the babies in the paediatric ward do not have an accompanying person
they often see these midwives as their saviours
they help educate mothers in lactation counselling,” Renáta Šuláková
appreciated the presence of midwives in the hospital
“It is the first thousand days from conception that are very important for the life of the baby
It lays the foundation for the immune system
While these colleagues primarily help moms from poor communities
I believe their help will be in demand in the rooms of all moms in our maternity ward
They raise awareness and break down barriers between staff and patients,” she added
thanks in part to the support of the Penta Foundation
With financial support from Norwegian grants and the state budget
the first eleven midwives have now been recruited
One of the midwives is Marta Polláková from Spišská Nová Ves
who worked as a kindergarten teacher for 20 years
She takes the position of a midwife as her mission and her main goal is to help mothers
But it makes me even more happy when I see that the mothers want to work with me and that the children are happy when I come,” she concluded
“We offer them help with the baby’s development while it’s in the belly
we take care of them before the birth and also after the birth
bathe or massage the baby and we also make sure the mother’s health is at its best,” explained midwife Anežka Mirgová
On the occasion of the presentation of the activities of the Mission 1000 project
nearly fifty participants met in Spišská Nová Ves
attracted by the topic of early childhood care and effective approaches to early childhood care in the conditions of marginalized communities in Slovakia
The event also included a presentation of the planned First Years First Priority campaign
The Mission 1000 project benefits from a €199,000 grant from Norway through the Norway Grants

Slovakia has one more chance to turn the greatest generation of talent it has produced in a long time into a WJC medal
Following their exceptional showing in the 2022 NHL Draft
Slovakia’s under-20 class was expected to impress at the 2023 World Juniors
Tying Finland with seven points in group play was a good achievement for the nation
Slovakia’s event came to end before reaching the medal round
It was the neighbouring Czechia that had the better tournament
winning its group and playing in the final game versus Canada to win a silver medal
Slovakia will want to take advantage of the final year of eligibility for its golden generation to take a big step forward in 2024
The current roster holds 15 returning players from last year’s event
What was a young group of attackers in last year’s event is now a veteran bunch
many of whom are drafted prospects who’ve received the benefits of an NHL training camp or two
There are several players who come into the tournament scoring around a point per game in the North American Junior system
while Adam Sykora is playing in the American Hockey League
It’s a team with the ability to score enough goals to easily make the quarter-finals
and perhaps move up the standings to claim a higher seed
One of the returnees is also the winner of the top goaltender award from last winter
He finished the 2023 event with a save percentage of .936 while posting a 2.40 goals-against average
He enters this tournament with a .911 save percentage through 20 games in the USHL
Gajan is going to need to play close to the level he did last year because the defence is the weakest aspect of the club
the 2022 NHL Draft’s second overall pick
to captain the team from the blue line once more
many of the defencemen have been passed over by NHL teams in recent drafts
The burden of carrying the defence corps will fall on the shoulders of Maxim Strbak
a player preparing for his NHL career by playing in the NCAA with Michigan State University
He’s going to play every situation for his coach
and may push the 30-minute mark in most of the games
There is a couple of promising up-and-comers on the blue line
Richard Baran is the second-leading scoring defenceman of the BCHL’s Victoria Grizzlies
and the 16-year-old Luka Radivojevic is racking up assists in Sweden’s under-20 league
so Strbak may not have to do all the quarterbacking for the team
Some added offence from the back end would be helpful to the club’s fortunes
and the defencemen are bound to register a few points just getting the puck to the quality forwards in front of them
The biggest question for Slovakia is how difficult they will find it to get play turned out of their own zone and set the forwards up to take over on the attack
One of the reasons why Gajan was named the top goalie last year was because he faced an average of nearly 40 shots per game
and this year the defence ahead of him isn’t as good as it was then
The first indication of how the defence will fare will come in the very first game of the tournament on Boxing Day when they measure their play versus Czechia
A win over the defending silver medalists would not only help on the way to securing a quarter-final spot
but give the defence a needed boost of confidence that it can hold its own and connect the two strongest elements of the squad
If they can help keep Gajan somewhat fresh for the playoff portion of the event
anything could happen when things shift to single-elimination play
Japan-based Nidec Corporation's transaction previously subjected to European Commission's conditions
After months of in-depth investigation by the European Commission (EC) and commitments to be met

One of Embraco's subsidiaries acquired by the Nidec Corporation is situated in Spišská Nová Ves
Embraco Slovakia will change its name to Nidec Global Appliance Slovakia

This is certainly true of the video competition ‘How the Eurofunds helped my region and city’
young people again proved their originality
and the fact that they are not indifferent to what is happening around them
they captured what had managed to be done with eurofunds in their immediate surroundings
The imaginary gold medal went to Spišská Nová Ves
“As a proud Spišička I did not hesitate for a second and decided to shoot a spot about my home town
Boards with the European Union logo are to be seen on a number of buildings - a sign of successfully implemented projects
“As soon as school duties and weather permitted
I started filming,” revealed Mária Dirgová
who won with a video entitled Development of Spišská Nová Ves thanks to EU support
She took her bicycle and camera and covered the whole city
She needed more time for the post-processing of the material because she wanted the final result to be just right
"I was very pleasantly surprised how everything went
I didn't expect so much attention at all
My winning spot was shown on our school internet site
even the town of Spišská Nová Ves itself praised it on it’s social network
and I was also approached by the city magazine for an interview
Nina Chorvátová from the Business Academy in Dolný Kubín with a spot called Cyklotrasa (Cycle Path) finished second
The third was Adam Spodniak from the Grammar School of Božena Slančíková Timrava in Lučenec with a video showing the transformation of Zichy's manor house in Divíne
The competition’s video spots were judged by an expert committee composed of representatives of the Government Office of the Slovak Republic as publicizer and organizer of the competition
as well as media experts from the Office of the President of the Czech Republic and Protos Production
The main criteria were to grasp the themes
The Eurofunds Competition helped my region and city meet the requirements of the Joint Communication Actions
the seven joint communication activities that came from the activities of the European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu and Marianne Thyssen
Slovakia is one of the few European countries to implement this plan in the majority of points
The locality has never been systematically researched
The Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves has presented a significant discovery – Celtic Bronze statue
The museum conducted archaeological research in Jánovce in the location of Pod Hradiskom (Under the Hillfort) in spring and autumn of this year
explained archaeologist Mária Hudáková
It is a locality known since the 19th century
but had not been systematically researched until now
The research revealed more than 800 objects from various eras
overlapping with the Roman era.The research revealed more than 800 objects from various eras
wharve and glass beads and bracelets,” Hudáková said
The most precious find is a Bronze statue that represents a naked man
It wears typical jewellery for that time – a neckerchief
“The finding is unique with its realistic depiction and golden eyes,” archaeologist added
The finds are stored in Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves
They could be available for the public next year as part of a new exhibition
Aladár Münnich was born in Szepesiglód (Spišská Nová Ves
Aurél Münnich, was a lawyer and served as Member of Parliament for Szepes (Spiš) County
As a student of the Lutheran grammar school on Fasor in Budapest
he achieved success in national fencing competitions at the age of 16
under training by the famous master Italo Santelli
After studying architecture in Berlin and Munich
he worked for Fred Rowntree in England and then returned to Hungary and began working for Flóris Korb’s company
in the 12 December 1892 issue of Magyar Géniusz

In 1923 he designed the new county hall in Baja
he worked with Dénes Györgyi on the Déri Museum building in Debrecen (1923–1929)
where he created plans for the Postapalota ('post palace')
Several public institutions and private houses were built based on Münnich's plans around the country
but his grandest works can be found in Budapest
The picturesque exterior of the pigeon-shooting clubhouse on Margaret Island (1929) and a boathouse for the Hungária Rowing Club on the Danube proved his hand in using historical elements
neo-baroque facades and neo-Gothic arched windows with modern styles
the rhythm of his architecture was defined by planes protruding from the façade and bay windows.

The Miskolc Market Hall and several factory buildings for Péti Nitrogén Művek proved that Münnich had an eye for large-scale industrial complexes using the most modern techniques.
two of his major designs in Budapest were covered by English
German and American architecture magazines
open-plan Pig Market Hall opened in 1932 Gubacsi Road
which had been operating there for three decades
The three-nave structure is made of reinforced concrete with a unique, monolithic frame structure
The building roof a total of 7,000 square metres
The hall could house 5,000 pigs and fairs could happen comfortably regardless of the weather
state-of-the-art food distribution centre was completed nearby in the same year
between the Csepel Danube branch and Soroksár
was the largest covered facility in the country
It was needed after the Central Market Hall could no longer serve the needs of the ever-growing city
The only solution was to build a market hall that could serve the needs of a developing metropolis
while even the interior height of the cellars reached 4 metres
could accommodate nearly four hundred merchants simultaneously
The continuous movement of goods was ensured by a rail depo for over 200 cars and two river ports
these buildings served Budapest through communism and into the mid-1990s

Aladár Münnich won first place with his proposal entitled “City of four corners – The reconstruction of Greater Budapest”
He believed that Budapest should not be restored
The large-scale idea conceived Greater Budapest as a unit and divided it into eleven administrative districts
To relieve the old city centre of the centrally developed Budapest
four new city centres (City of four corners) would be created at Nyugati Square
the intersection of Üllői Road and Ferenc Boulevard
Kelenföld and at Magyar Jakobinusok Square Hungarian Jacobin Square
especially interchanges between incoming high-speed rail connection to concentrate around these
His idea contained similar plans for seven suburban centres
Münnich also designed parks and greens for areas which had been undeveloped
He considered the development of guided transportation to be vital for efficiency
Münnich's idea of the intersection of Üllői Road and the outer ring road in 1945 (Budapest periodical
Aladár Münnich could no longer comment of matters of urban development
he left the country and emigrated to Canada
he designed the church of the Hungarian Reformed community in Montreal
led a literary circle and wrote for Hungarian-language newspapers until his death in 1975, Münnich never forgot his roots
it would be a shame if we forgot the importance of his oeuvre

The new ownership is expected to bring positive changes
a company that produces compressors and condensation units in the northern Slovak town of Spišská Nová Ves
selling the plant to the Nidec Corporation
a world-wide manufacturer of electric motors residing in Kyoto
“The transaction is subject to the approval of regulatory authorities and other usual conditions and its completion is expected in early 2019,” said Emília Gondeková from the branding
communications and corporate responsibility department at Embraco Slovakia
The deal does not include Embraco’s Italian facility which the company plans to close
news emerged that Embraco might move production from Italy to Slovakia
About 500 people were expected to lose their jobs there
Production in Spišská Nová Ves will continue without any changes until the transaction is completed
has already visited Ján Volný
Mayor of Spišská Nová Ves
“Mr Borba has informed me about the changes
which should have a positive impact on Embraco Slovakia,” said Volný
the Japanese owner is 10 times bigger than Embraco and has a great chance to win new markets while keeping the ones it has so far.”
The Nidec Corporation employs more than 100,000 people around the world
Embraco is one of the top companies in the production of hermetic compressors globally
Mexico and Slovakia manufacture 37 million compressors annually
It employs about 13,000 people around the world
Embraco arrived in Spišská Nová Ves in 1997 and officially began production in 1999
Now the plant employs about 2,300 people and is the biggest employer in the town as well as the region
Embraco also has a technological centre here which develops cooling compressors
In March 2016 the company opened its shared service centre in Košice
The hosting towns have adopted tightened security measures
but also measures to protect the environment
The Slovak towns of Poprad and Spišská Nová Ves will host the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship between April 13 and 23
Fans need to prepare for tightened security measures
Security measures will be applied at both stadiums
“I was pleasantly surprised by the collaboration with the management of both stadiums,” said Roman Štamberský
Though the preparation of this championship is as demanding as the preparation of bigger tournaments
he praised the work the representatives of stadiums have done
Both winter stadiums will be open 1.5 hours before the matches
Spectators should come earlier as they will have to undergo security checks before entering the site
Visitors to the championship are prohibited from bringing weapons
pyrotechnics and other banned objects to the hall
They should also not enter the stadiums under the influence of alcohol or drugs
It is also forbidden to bring their own food and drinks
“Though the support of fans from the stands is important for every team
it is important to follow the instructions of organisers,” Bednárik added
“Spectators cannot throw any objects to the ice rink and they will also be stripped of any devices producing sounds
The organisers also warn that those with whole-day tickets will have to leave the stadium after the first match as it is not possible to secure checking the tickets
The organisers also claimed they will try to turn the world championship into a green tournament
Both towns plan to adopt measures to protect the environment
the collection of waste will be secured by an eco-friendly hybrid vehicle
There will also be 25 stands with coloured bags to separate communal waste
informed Mária Bonková of the company Brantner Poprad
Spišská Nová Ves will install eight big containers and is ready to collect waste six times more often than usual
said head of the local stadium Jozef Hrubý
“Since there are thousands of participants
organisers and fans during world championships
there will be much more waste than during an ordinary ice hockey match,” Štamberský said

The works of the renowned Master Paul are not limited just to Levoča
can also be found in tiny churches in inconspicuous villages
Most of them are in the historical region of Spiš but some of the works of Master Paul (Pavol in Slovak) and his apprentices decorate places of worship in the adjacent Šariš and Gemer regions
The picturesque centre of this borough of the town of Poprad
which used to be a separate village in its own right
The adornment of this church is the eponymous main altar made around 1513 by Master Paul
The altar had already made an impact by the beginning of the Renaissance and it includes The Last Supper
a tall relief with the motif of St George fighting a dragon and the Lord our Father on a throne with the kneeling Christ and Maria
Master Paul also included himself among the Apostles – as he was wont to do – but we can only guess which one of them depicts him
Another gem from his workshop is the statue of St Anthony the Hermit
recent research has confirmed this altar statue bears the signs of Master Paul’s workshop
The Holy Cross Basilica houses a cross with a statue of Jesus which dates back to the early 16th century
It is placed in the altar case of the main altar but it is evidently too big for it; it seems to have been placed on a different altar originally
This could be one of the first works of Master Paul
The Kežmarok Basilica Minor is one of the biggest churches in Spiš
a rococo confessional and many other precious historical items
In the local Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church
there is a baroque altar from 1709; but in its middle
a gothic altar case from the original altar by Master Paul can be found
His tender depiction of the Madonna is one of the most beautiful in Slovakia
also bears the “handwriting” of Master Paul
The historical rarity of Mlynica village at the foot of the Tatras is an originally romanesque church built probably in the mid-13th century
it was rebuilt in the gothic style and received two new altars
which seem to come from the years 1515 to 1520 and to be made by Master Paul of Levoča or his disciples
The most prominent statue is that of St Margaret the Virgin of Antioch
patron saint of the church which is definitely the work of one of the sculptors collaborating with Paul
The gothic church of St Lawrence in Hrabušice is dominated by a late-gothic winged altarpiece dedicated to the patron-saint of the church
Sts Lawrence and Stephen the Protomartyr were made in the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča and were placed in the altar case
there are four panels with scenes from the life of St Lawrence the Diaconus and on the outer sides there is a depiction of the Passion cycle
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Spišská Nová Ves is notable not just for its tower – the tallest in Slovakia – but also for its sculpting group
which belongs among the greatest gems of Master Paul
it was placed on the beam of the triumphal arch but now
and so they will not be available for public viewing in the near future
believers gather in the Church of the Purification of the Virgin Mary
It was built in the second half of the 14th century
and although the dominant part of the church now contains a newer
it still houses mediaeval statues of the Virgin Mary and St John
that were originally in the Calvary on the triumphal arch
The statue of the Madonna is among the most precious items in the church
as it stems from 1510 and was made in the workshop of Master Paul
The originally romanesque church of St Catherine of Alexandria has been rebuilt several times in the course of history – but the precious monuments were not destroyed
One of them is the statue of Jesus on the cross by Master Paul
which was originally part of the triumphal arch but during floods in the 19th century
The Šariš Museum in the town of Bardejov holds the group of statues known as The Small Calvary which shows at first sight who is its author
The typical signs of Master Paul can be seen in the type of scene
stylisation of figures – and in each detail
The Calvary from Bardejov is considered the last work of Master Paul and it has represented our cultural heritage at many national and international exhibitions
It was last renovated almost half a century ago
Master Paul also worked for the St Nicolas Church in Prešov where three statues have been preserved from his body of work
One of them is the statue of Michael the Archangel
which used to be the central figure of the altar which had ceased to exist by the end of the 18th century
As the statue was preserved only in a torso state – arms missing – it was mistakenly considered to be that of Gabriel the Archangel
that it is Michael the Archangel and that the statue had originally probably had a lifted right arm with a sword and scales in the left hand
on which he weighed the souls of those deceased in mediaeval scenes
The impressive Calvary of Master Paul in Spišská Nová Ves also used to contain the statue of St Maria Magdalena but it had a tumultuous fate
It disappeared from the Spišská Nová Ves church and found a new home in the village of Stratená (meaning The Lost in Slovak)
it spent a while in the wooden bungalow chapel near the railway station
in a place called Na Špitáli (i.e
The wooden structure vanished in the 1960s
the statue was moved to the Stratená church
Master Paul and his disciples also decorated the interior of St Martin’s Church in Lipany
This was probably done at the order of the Tárczay family who had a family chapel there
The Christ on the cross used to be part of a sculptural group
but now it is placed separately in the nave to the left of the main altar
The new Japanese owner will have to sell its second plant manufacturing the same products
Japanese company Nidec can take over Embraco
a producer of refrigeration compressors situated in Spišská Nová Ves (Košice Region)
The European Commission has approved the acquisition
American company Whirlpool sold Embraco to Nidec last year
the latter will have to get rid of its plant situated in Zlaté Moravce (Nitra Region)
which also produces refrigeration compressors
that addresses concerns about a potential violation of competition rules
Nidec produces refrigeration compressors through its subsidiary Nidec Global Appliance
While Nidec employs 1,200 people in Slovakia
Both companies are close competitors and the biggest
players on the market that sell variable speed refrigeration compressors for households and commercial purposes
The EC has been worried that the transaction would create a single dominant manufacturer of this type of compressor
The EC thus started an investigation in November 2018
looking into whether the deal between Whirpool and Nidec
made in April 2018 and worth $1.08 billion
People may not be familiar with compressors
they are at the heart of fridges and freezers in every household
The demand for these compressors is to rise sharply in future
the EC stated conditions Nidec has to comply with before the transaction can be completed
“The conditions under which we have approved Nidec's acquisition of Embraco ensure that effective competition will continue in this sector,” said European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager
Nidec will have to divest its current compressor manufacturing halls in Zlaté Moravce
which were acquired from the German producer Secop in 2017
Only then could Nidec obtain the Embraco plant in Spišská Nová Ves
alongside other manufacturing halls in Mexico
Industrial customers and consumers should not be harmed by higher prices or less choice

or their companies are officially based there
One of the suspects detained and charged is the district boss of the coalition partner

EVEN though Brazil and Slovakia differ in size and are separated by a wide ocean
economic cooperation between the two countries is not as scanty as one might think
want to move their economies forward with new enterprises that have higher added value and this can be an opportunity for more economic cooperation
bilateral trade is the primary economic tie between the countries but four companies with Brazilian capital also operate manufacturing facilities in Slovakia
“Brazil is Slovakia’s most important partner in Latin America for economic and trade cooperation,” Dagmar Hlavatá
the head of the press department at the Economy Ministry
“Brazil is Slovakia’s 26th biggest export partner and it purchases more Slovak products than countries like Portugal
The Economy Ministry believes the economic cooperation between the two countries is currently good and even with some clear disadvantages such as the large distance separating the countries and the language barrier
the ministry expects that further economic ties will be developed
“Brazil is a country with a developed economy and in addition to its large domestic consumption
it offers advanced industrial production ready to be expanded to the whole world,” Hlavatá stated
“This is why Brazilian direct investment in Slovakia is of such importance.”
the secretary-general of the Luso Brazilian Business Association (LBBA)
believes economic cooperation between the countries at this time is suboptimal and can be improved.“Most commercial items traded are of low or medium added value and the few direct investments are not diversified enough,” Pellegrini told The Slovak Spectator
that economic cooperation between Brazil and Slovakia has substantial grounds for development in this decade.”
Pellegrini believes the burgeoning economic crisis in Europe will force European businesses to seek better ties beyond the common market and that Brazil’s rapidly growing demand will stimulate business with eurozone countries like Slovakia
the strong fundamentals of the Slovak economy may encourage Brazilian companies to explore opportunities in the Slovak market and from it into other countries of central-eastern Europe
as asset prices tend to become attractive for foreign investors during an economic crisis,” Pellegrini added
Pellegrini said that the increased level of bilateral trade and investment by Brazilian firms in Slovakia in recent years reflect a growing mutual awareness of business opportunities in both countries
but that there is much work still to be done
“We are confident that a more intensive and systematic exchange of business information through both governmental and private channels is essential to promote bilateral opportunities between Brazil and Slovakia,” Pellegrini said
“The gap of information and the scarce institutional ties between the countries are some of the barriers to promotion of more effective bilateral economic cooperation.”
Bilateral trade between Brazil and Slovakia has improved significantly during the last decade
Vera Helena Marega from the department of commerce at the Brazilian Embassy in Bratislava told The Slovak Spectator
She reported that based on Brazilian statistical data foreign trade with Slovakia in 2000 represented only 0.009 percent of Brazil’s total imports and exports but in 2008
Slovak products going to Brazil increased from 0.01 percent of the country's total imports in 2000 to 0.06 percent in 2008
but imports of Brazilian products into Slovakia remained level at 0.01 percent of the total over this time period
Marega noted that the foreign trade results for 2010 indicate that the Brazilian economy was more resilient than other economies during the financial and economic crisis
it is important to mention that Brazil exports mainly manufactured products to Slovakia
with basic products coming in second place,” Marega noted
the Brazilian statistics show a [trade] deficit in favour of Slovakia in bilateral commerce
something that is not reflected in the Slovak data
in spite of the good results in recent years
there is still much room for improvement in bilateral commerce between Brazil and Slovakia.”
The Slovak Economy Ministry reported that Slovakia has reported a trade deficit for the last few years except in 2010
when Slovakia’s exports to Brazil tripled to €146 million and Slovakia reported a trade surplus with Brazil of €78.6 million
For the period from January to September 2011
the Economy Ministry reported €57.8 million in imports from Brazil and Slovak exports of €50.4 million
a trade deficit for Slovakia of €7.4 million
Marega said that Brazilian data on bilateral commerce between the countries indicates that it is Brazil that has a trade deficit
specifying that from January to November 2011
total trade amounted to about €138.5 million and €93 million of that trade was of Slovak products imported into Brazil
The majority of products traded between Brazil and Slovakia are manufactured items and Marega said that makes Slovakia an exception among the countries of central Europe but noted that this is primarily due to the strong automotive industries in each country as well as the presence of Brazilian companies in Slovakia
the Brazilian Agency for Promotion of Exports and Investments in 2010-2011 reported that commerce in agricultural products is in decline while the industries with most potential would be tools
pharmaceuticals and chemicals,” she said
Marega sees much room for improvement from both countries and believes lack of information is a primary obstacle to the development of better commercial relations and that other barriers such as language can and should be overcome
“Brazil and Slovakia have much in common and could be much stronger partners not only in commerce but also by cooperating in science and technology
on the development of projects with high added value,” Marega said
She sees the Brazilian embassy in Slovakia as having strategic importance in disseminating information about programmes and opportunities for investment and exchange of students
The Economy Ministry believes participation by experts from Slovak institutions in programmes such as Brazil’s Science without Borders
in which Brazilian scientists and innovators will go abroad to gain experience and knowledge
may lead to better forms of economic cooperation
“This programme creates a unique opportunity for Slovak companies
research centres and universities to develop economic cooperation with Brazil,” Hlavatá said
Over the last decade Brazil has transformed itself into a country with huge economic and political influence
It is now the sixth largest economy in the world and has grown far beyond only exporting food commodities into a country with strategic investments in many economic sectors across the world
The Economy Ministry highlighted the fact that statistics from the National Bank of Slovakia show that the inflow of direct foreign investments by Brazilian firms in Slovakia amounted to €516.4 million in 2009
the largest foreign investment made in Slovakia that year
Much of this investment was linked to the expansion of Embraco Slovakia
a producer of compressors for refrigerators and air conditioning units
as well as the arrival of subcontractors to the firm
four companies with Brazilian capital are active in Slovakia while Embraco Slovakia
“Embraco is one of the biggest foreign investments in the region,” Magera said
“It also brought three other successful investments projects to Slovakia.”
These three other investments are CRW Plásticos Slovakia
a producer of injection moulds for the plastics industry
which manufactures insulators and seals for compressors
All three companies are based in Spišská Nová Ves in the eastern region of Slovakia
an area that has traditionally had high unemployment
There are also two Brazilian companies trading in the food sector
“An especially positive attribute of Brazilian investors in Slovakia is their willingness to place their projects in a region with an available and qualified labour force
meaning in the Spiš region,” Hlavatá said
The unemployment rate in the Spišská Nová Ves district was 18.35 percent in November 2011 according to Slovakia’s Labour
The Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency (SARIO) told The Slovak Spectator that the €185 million investment by Embraco is a good example that Slovakia can be attractive for Brazilian investors even if it is viewed as a very small country with a small domestic market
“When a Brazilian company wants to keep its global competitiveness
then the location of Slovakia in the middle of Europe is one of the solutions,” Ľubomíra Gabrielová
the head of the marketing department at SARIO
adding that Brazilian companies started opening production units abroad in the early 1990s
Pellegrini agreed that as Brazilian companies become more international there is a competitive advantage to having a production facility or commercial office close to European customers
“Located in the heart of central-eastern Europe
Slovakia is an attractive investment destination particularly for Brazilian companies with solid
long-term business relations with customers in this region,” Pellegrini stated
Slovakia offers other important assets to potential Brazilian investors
such as a qualified workforce and access to the common market and the economic cooperation and regional development mechanisms of the EU.”Pellegrini added that synergy with already established Brazilian companies is another incentive for new investments in Slovakia
SARIO sees huge prospects for economic cooperation with Brazil
SARIO is cooperating with the Brazilian embassy as well as LBBA
with which it is now planning a roundtable event for those interested in Slovakia as an investment destination
In summarising SARIO’s activities in drawing Brazilian investments to Slovakia
Gabrielová cited the agency’s assistance to two Brazilian projects that came to Slovakia between 2002 and 2011 and created about 720 jobs from a combined investment of €18.5 million
But Gabrielová noted that SARIO does not have any current projects with Brazilian investors
SARIO believes industrial production is the sector that currently has most potential to attract Brazilian investors but it does not rule out interest also coming from firms dealing with renewable energy sources and technologies
an important sector of the Brazilian economy
Hlavatá also highlighted the participation of Slovak companies in investment projects in the Brazilian energy sector
while the Economy Ministry also sees prospects in the rubber industry and production of machinery
In evaluating Brazilian investors’ interest in Slovakia
Marega stressed that countries within the EU are important commercial partners for Brazil
giving her quite optimistic expectations for future economic cooperation between Slovakia and Brazil
“Many agreements are currently being negotiated between Brazil and the [EU] economic block to facilitate the entry of Brazilian products into the European market,” Marega said
“Slovakia is part of this market; therefore I expect that this will bring fruits also in the relationship between Brazil and Slovakia.”
She added that many other projects are under development
particularly in educational cooperation and commerce
due to its strategic location in the region
may become an important entry point for Brazilian cooperation and Brazilian products
providing an exceptional opportunity for strengthening the Brazilian presence in eastern Europe,” Marega stated
Pellegrini also hopes to see the development of more bilateral tourism
“The 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil will help promote Brazilian travel destinations among Slovaks,” Pellegrini noted
adding that the strength of the Brazilian currency
against the euro has also brought an increasing number of Brazilian tourists to central and eastern Europe
FINAL preparations are underway for a woodworking industrial park in Spišská Nová Ves.The park
is a co-operative effort between the town and district governments
local development agency Agentúra pre rozvoj Spiša
and private investors to revive the traditional woodworking industry in an area struggling with high unemployment and unused capacity.According to the head of Spišská's district state office
all required documentation and work schedules will be completed this month
A press conference is to be announced by the end of the month by wood processing firm Pilvud
which owns the plant now occupying the site

FINAL preparations are underway for a woodworking industrial park in Spišská Nová Ves
local development agency Agentúra pre rozvoj Spiša
and private investors to revive the traditional woodworking industry in an area struggling with high unemployment and unused capacity
According to the head of Spišská's district state office
"By the end of June building permits will be granted
and by September we will open a tender for the reconstruction work
reconstruction of the park should be completed," said Beňa
which will be situated on the underused grounds of the Nový Domov furniture manufacturer
will see 2.8 million euro invested and up to 1,000 jobs created in the wood-working sector
The Spišská Nová Ves district had one of the country's highest rates of unemployment at 27.4 per cent at the end of March
compared to a national rate of 20.7 per cent
While two million euro will come from the EU's Phare economic restructuring programme
will come from state and local governments
director of the Pilvud firm which owns Nový Domov
which lies just east of Slovak Paradise national park and about 35 kilometres south-east of the High Tatras mountain range
has a long tradition in forestry and woodworking
The Nový Domov plant has seen its workforce fall from around 800 in 1989 to today's 350
according to plant director Štefan Oltman
as the firm struggles to make a profit with ageing machinery and poor infrastructure
Nový Domov now occupies only about half of its nine-hectare compound
While part of the industrial park project will be to revamp the disused facilities
an additional 9,000 square meters of factory space is slated to be built on an adjacent 20,000 square-meter area
Spišská district office head Beňa points out: "This is a very intelligent investment because it will create many jobs at a relatively low cost
"Spišská Nová Ves used to be a major centre for the wood industry
but the sawmills in the area have had to lay off most of their workers since 1989
all the key infrastructure is still in place
so limited new construction will be required
There is also a woodworking school on the premises which turns out skilled labourers."
But while the existing facilities reduce the costs of creating the park
there are considerable infrastructure requirements
including upgrading an existing heating plant
reconstructing and upgrading a waste-water treatment facility
rebuilding three production halls as well as gas connections
sewage systems and other improvements Magulák identified as conditions set by the European Union
several investors have already expressed interest in entering the project
including an English manufacturer of children's furniture
an Italian manufacturer of upholstered furniture
and a German firm specialising in furniture and building supplies
Out of 105 such projects received by Phare officials in Brussels
the Spiš park is one of five to be approved so far
Magulák thinks Spišská
"I think Spišská was selected as the site for a woodworking industrial park because there is a long-term tradition of woodworking here
To a large extent there are favourable conditions here with raw materials and the experience of people who have been active in this field for decades," said Magulák
some foreign firms have also expressed reservations about Slovakia as an investment destination
Following a meeting between Nový Domov and an interested German firm
"their evaluation was that Slovakia is not an interesting country at the moment
because we are not able to spell out what conditions we offer for their investment - what kind of tax breaks they will be eligible for
the town and regional administrations will do for them and so on
"A number of times the firm's director
in his experience has caused major problems
His position is to maybe wait a year until there's a new government and then see what the new conditions are."
But Beňa downplayed corruption as a factor deterring investment
"It won't be a problem," he said
"Investors will concentrate on the positives - the high skill level of our people
and other advantages we can give foreign investors."
