Europe / SMG’s Advertising and Sponsorship Agreement Terminated by The Swiss Property Federation
It was a nasty surprise in Switzerland last week as the Swiss Marketplace Group (SMG) discovered it will no longer receive advertising and sponsorship support from the Swiss Property Federation (SVIT)
After ongoing pressure from stakeholders regarding SMG's supposed dominant position in the Swiss real estate market
SVIT has opted to terminate virtually all of its support for SMG
which operates leading portals including ImmoScout24 and HomeGate
SVIT had been advertising SMG's real estate offerings for roughly the past 12 months
but a disagreement dating back to February 2024
which saw nine brokers and trustees call on SVIT to boycott its support for SMG products
has now come to a head with SVIT voting in favour of terminating all sponsorship
advertising and other service agreements with SMG
a trade group that lobbies for the interests of member stakeholders across several business sectors
received a letter from nine disgruntled brokers and trustees in February
"All advertising/sponsorship and other service agreements between the organizations
companies and bodies of the umbrella organization SVIT Switzerland and the Swiss Marketplace Group AG (SMG) and its organizations must be terminated immediately
"No new service agreements are to be concluded with the SMG or compensation or sponsorship contributions of any kind to be accepted."
The letter was a response to price hikes enacted by HomeGate
the SMG-owned market-leading Swiss real estate portal
The argument stemmed from the fact that SMG—a joint venture led by TX Group
Mobiliar and General Atlantic—has a stranglehold over the Swiss real estate industry via ImmoScout24 and especially HomeGate
whereby price hikes in a near-monopoly are deemed unethical
Such was the fallout from the proposed price hikes, that the Swiss price supervisor was called in to examine whether SMG was engaging in "abusive" behaviour

the nature of Ukraine has suffered such destruction from the full-scale invasion that it can be interpreted as ecocide
If we manage to preserve the willow forest that has begun to form on the site of the former Kakhovka Reservoir
it will be the largest forest of this species in Europe
This was reported in an interview with the RBC-Ukraine news agency by Yakiv Didukh
an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
He said that after the dam was blown up and the Kakhovka Reservoir was devastated by Russian invaders
there were predictions that dust storms would occur in that area
but this did not happen because willow began to grow
The scientist recalled that the reservoir was destroyed in June
“It was then that the willow produced seeds and they germinated abundantly
the seeds would not have germinated,” he explained
there were up to 25 shoots per 1 square meter of territory
Yakiv Didukh explained that the young trees grew well at the bottom of the former reservoir because the silt was rich in nutrients
these willows had already reached 5 meters
The scientist said that willow forests grow very quickly
he warned that if the area were to be flooded
the destruction of the trees would cause great damage
“Willow forests have been destroyed everywhere
it will be the largest willow forest in Europe,” said the academician
He emphasized that such a forest is very valuable because
up to 60 species of birds live in such forests
ecologists are fighting to restore the Velykyi Luh and unique willow floodplain forests on the territory that used to be the bottom of the Kakhovka Reservoir
“Though they will not be the same as before
because many adventive alien species are already moving in,” warned Didukh
At the end of March, EcoPolitic reported that UAH 2.3 million was allocated from the state budget for 4 state research institutes to study the destroyed Kakhovka reservoir
Toxic pollution of sludge accumulated at the bottom of an artificial reservoir creates a serious environmental problem

Bars-M: Russia's first digital cartographer
Russia developed a series of Bars-M satellites designed to beam back high-resolution stereo images of the Earth surface
As many as six satellites of this type were known to be under construction as of 2014
Previous chapter: Original Bars satellite project
In 2007, the Russia's flagship space cartography project was restarted under name Bars-M
The Ministry of Defense again awarded a contract for the project to TsSKB Progress on October 12 and the active development of the satellite took place from 2008 to 2013
The first mockups of the spacecraft were prepared for tests in 2009
key components of the satellite were to be built inside Russia
In the middle of 2008, the commander of strategic rocket forces, which apparently hoped to use maps based on the satellite's data for targeting its ICBMs
reportedly signed off on a preliminary design of the Bars-M project
TsSKB Progress eventually won a federal tender for the project
Open Russian records on federal procurements indicate that six such satellites had been ordered
the federal government sanctioned an 18-month upgrade of Building 6 "V" at TsSKB Progress in Samara
The renovation would enable the parallel assembly of two Bars-M satellites per year in the clean-room environment required by sensitive optical sensors onboard the spacecraft
In 2011, a document summarizing remote-sensing missions developed by the Russian space agency, Roskosmos, listed the Bars-M satellite scheduled for launch at the end of 2014. Two more Bars-Ms were expected to follow at the end of 2016 and the middle of 2018
Possibly, the document refered to the same Bars-M spacecraft, which could be funded jointly by the Ministry of Defense and Roskosmos. However, at the beginning of 2013, Bars-M was mentioned among nine other projects slated for budget cuts at Roskosmos. (733)
The Bars-M spacecraft received a new development index -- 14F148
The four-ton satellite became the first spacecraft developed at TsSKB Progress almost entirely with computer-assisted design
Bars-M also became the company's first satellite featuring an unpressurized body
it promised to extend the operational life span of the satellite
the main limiting factor for satellites had been the loss of pressure and subsequent failure of internal systems under harsh temperature and vacuum conditions
The unpressurized design could also reduce the overall mass of the spacecraft
The new architecture of the Bars-M satellite featured three main components:
The SVIT propulsion system would be installed inside the MSS service module and could be installed inside the MSS during the assembly via its bottom bulkhead. (737) The SVIT propulsion seemingly derived from previous engine units propelling the Yantar, Kometa, Resurs-DK, Resurs-P and Persona satellites
The SVIT features four main orbit-correction engines
developed at Isaev KB Khimmash in Korolev and 12 small attitude-control thrusters
provided by NII Khimmash in Nizhnyaya Salda
Four tanks include a one pair for 50 kilograms of fuel (hydrazine) and another pair for oxidizer (nitrogen tetroxide)
are attached to the four sides of the aluminum structure of the MSS module
forming the box-shaped enclosure of the service module
The payload is attached to the top of the MSS' upper bulkhead
First developed for the Bars-M project, the MSS module later became the basis for the Obzor-R radar-carrying satellite
The Karat telescope system (738)
The Bars-M's main instrument inside the MTsA payload module consists of a dual telescope called OEK Karat, where OEK stands for the Optical Electronic Complex. The triple-lens instrument was developed at the LOMO company in St Petersburg, which also built the main imaging system for the Persona reconnaissance satellite
the RSNKP enclosure carries two laser emitters
calibration and guiding laser range finders
mirror reflectors and attitude control sensors
The four-ton Bars satellites were intended for launch on Soyuz-2-1a rockets from Plesetsk and operate in orbit for at least five years
As many as six satellites could be eventually built
with two satellites per year coming off the production line in Samara
TsSKB Progress planned to spend 4.498 billion rubles to modernize its facilities for the project
there were rumors about the launch of the first Bars-M scheduled in 2012 or 2013
the launch was expected between May and September 2013
TsSKB Progress announced that the first phase of testing of the SVIT propulsion system had been completed at Isaev KB Khimmash and that the second phase of testing would take place in September
followed by integrated tests with a "small-size spacecraft."
The rare announcement might have been a PR response to a leaked report to the semi-official Life News agency, saying that Roskosmos was demanding 400 million rubles in damages for the alleged failure by TsSKB Progress to deliver two satellites, apparently referring to the first Bars-M and to the second Persona
Still, during 2014, the first Bars-M mission was pushed to the beginning of 2015. The launch was then expected in February 2015. This time, the Ministry of Defense apparently also had had enough, filing a 512,260,000-ruble claim against TsSKB Progress on October 7, apparently in addition to several other legal complaints against the company. (736)
During 2014, the satellite was finally assembled and underwent final testing, followed by its shipment by rail from Samara to Plesetsk at the end of January 2015. (732) The launch was first rumored on February 21 and then on February 28
an international note to airmen was issued closing two areas in the Arctic Ocean and hinting the launch time around 14:00 Moscow Time
The rocket was rolled out to the launch pad on February 25
A payload section with the Bars-M1 satellite is being integrated with the third stage of the Soyuz-2-1a rocket in Plesetsk in February 2015
The Soyuz-2-1a rocket with Bars-M1 satellite lifted off from Pad 4 at Site 43 in Plesetsk on Feb. 27, 2015, at 14:01:35 Moscow Time. According to the official Russian media, the launch went as scheduled and the spacecraft separated from the third stage of the launch vehicle at 14:11 Moscow Time. The satellite established normal communications with ground control at 15:36 Moscow Time
Within several hours after the launch, NORAD released orbital elements for an object in a 339.4 by 566.6-kilometer orbit with an inclination 97.64 degrees to the Equator. The spacecraft had an orbital period of 93.31 minutes. Surprisingly, the satellite was officially identified as Kosmos-2503, not Kosmos-2504, as was widely believed it would. As it became clear, the Olymp satellite
which had previously received a designation Kosmos-2501
was apparently reverted back to a cover-up name Luch
Bars-M1 maneuvered to a higher operational orbit
NORAD radar data indicated that it reached a 544 by 575-kilometer orbit with an inclination 97.6 degrees toward the Equator

má se to jíst a je nepatřičný z toho dělat něco jinýho
It’s always the absence which interests me
Forging a bond between the subjectivity of selection and the industrial production of the form
Not enough space for an open mutual dialog
yet the forms are talking to each other independently
it’s a composition of elements dealing with a specific formal problem
Heinrich Dunst was born in 1955 in Hallein (Salzburg
He creates spatial interventions and performances that navigate the gap between what can be seen and what can be said
the untranslatability of one form into another
and the contextual nature of spatial presentations
Dunst’s conceptual approach is rooted both in the work of artists like Marcel Broodthaers who scrutinize the systems underlying the perception of words and images
and in the Viennese scene of the 1980s and its characteristic ambition to extend abstract painting into the exhibition space
He lends these complex issues fresh interest by developing forms into correlations and pointedly questioning the seemingly unequivocal meaning of the elements through variation
Jiří Kovanda (1953) has been one of the outstanding conceptual artists of the Czech art scene
He organised his first performances in public environments in Prague in the mid-1970’s
were all recorded through photography in black and white and instruction leaflets
the work of art is made up of these documents
these performances having no other aim than the traces that are recorded
those mundane actions appear slightly offkey
through this combination of apparent simplicity and unbalance
to grasp at the individual and what remains real and human in a society under surveillance
Kovanda staged minimalist and poetical interventions still recorded through a photograph and a text while the artist vanished completely from his interventions which deal with the very notion of traces
Kovanda turned to painting before abandoning all artistic practices
His work was rediscovered only recently and Kovanda has been active again creating installations
paintings and performances as discrete still and poetical in which he strives to find beauty in everyday life and to map out a space where the individual can actually exist
We began the year with the theme of Home, in which we featured the Instagram platform Eye Mama as our cover piece
Eye Mama was set up at the beginning of 2020 by Karni Arieli
was hit hard by the unprecedented challenge of caring for young children during the Covid-19 lockdown
She began to document the tension of daily struggles – and joys – and posting images via social media
the platform grew into a network of over 20,000 photographer mothers
sharing and connecting their experiences through images
finding solidarity with women from all over the world
a Norwegian photographer whose dystopian portrait of her daughter is on this issue’s cover
The platform has continued to grow and 150 images will be published in a book at the start of next year
Limited copies still available from the BJP shop
Cover images by Marco Zanella and Yelena Yemchuk
This issue has two halves, with a double cover. The first represents Love, with a cover shot by Italian photographer, Marco Zanella
which documents the historic village of Cotignola
longing to escape the suffocating routine of his past life
He found a community bound together by tradition
A month into the production of this issue, on 24 February, Russia launched a brutal invasion into Ukraine. As the war raged, we felt it was imperative to maintain the visibility and prominence of the stories told by the photographers of Ukraine, so chose a second cover. Yelena Yemchuk’s cover image of a young male was taken before the 2022 war
Yemchuk spent two years (2015–2017) with the Odesa Military Academy
documenting the daily lives of 16 and 17-year-old recruits
the teenagers signed up to defend their country
‘Where the hell is this guy right now?’” she says in her interview

We celebrated our 11th annual Talent Issue this year, with a cover by Malaysian-Chinese photographer, Zhong Lin
Zhong is self-taught and prolific; she set herself a challenge of creating one image a day for 365 days during the lockdown
Working at the intersection of art and fashion
props and post-production to create charismatic sets that transport us into imaginary worlds
We were spoilt for choice with cover options for this issue
selecting from the fantastic work of 15 Ones to Watch
But this striking portrait stood out for its bold colour palette

We have followed the evolution of Tyler Mitchell’s career since his first cover with BJP back in December 2018
It was the same year he photographed Beyoncé for Vogue’s September issue
making him the first Black cover photographer in the magazine’s history
Though retaining a strong foothold in fashion, Mitchell’s practice has steadily moved into the fine art and conceptual sphere. Another first came this year, when Frieze Masters commissioned a special contemporary artwork from Mitchell to be featured in the fair. This hypnotic cover image, titled Cage, belongs to his series Chrysalis
as a graceful young woman gazes knowingly into the lens
against a painterly background of a white picket-fenced garden
It is suspended at a point between serenity and discomfort
a reflection on Mitchell’s practice and the series
metaphor is used to discuss Black spirituality
intimacy and freedom – serenity is paired with discomfort as Mitchell manipulates distance and time
The year concludes with the Portrait issue
with Sasha Huber’s image of Jack and Drana
This image has a particularly poignant and special history
It was first commissioned in 1850 by Louis Agassiz – a celebrated scientist who was also a racist
and used his position to promote the Black race as inferior
along with five others of enslaved individuals from the same community
The garments are inspired by important abolitionists of the time
the first Black woman to win a court case against a white man
yet their dressing in this shimmering armour serves to decolonise the image
The work is on show at Autograph, London, until 25 March 2023, and is part of a wider campaign of unnaming landmarks titled after Agassiz
British Journal of Photography was established in 1854
just four years after these images were first commissioned
and placing this image on the cover is a small part of our responsibility to acknowledge and redress photography’s prejudiced history
This issue is available from the BJP shop.

I was interested in working as a conservationist
or in the field of ecology and environmental studies
When I first looked for a job back at the time
there were no positions in organisations dedicated to conservation
a new department called environmental monitoring was being created at the Secondary Polytechnic Vocational School in Svit
former teachers approached me and asked if I would come there and teach
The environment is generally a very important topic for young people these days – many participate in various climate strikes
I've noticed that young people are starting to care about the environment more and are also a bit worried about the future
The effects of climate change are clearly visible
and I believe that young people are trying to do more to protect the environment compared to students more than 20 years ago
They are also interested in climate change at a scientific level
how it can affect phenological factors (the study of the timing and cyclical patterns of events in the natural world - Ed
Have you met any students who are climate change deniers
I have not met any such students at our school
This might be because one of the school’s focuses is environmental protection
we tell them that it is necessary for them to protect the environment

Peter Šinály joined Teach for Slovakia to help transform Slovak education
starting as a teacher in a primary school in Svit
A glossary of words is also published online
teacher Peter Šinály waits quietly for seventh graders to put on their masks properly and settle down so that the chemistry lesson can begin
which remains synonymous with chemical production
is named after a viscose rayon plant - Slovenská viskózna továreň - founded by well-known Czech entrepreneur Ján Antonín Baťa in the thirties
as part of the Teach for Slovakia initiative
a Bratislavan and a political science graduate of Vienna University
is now three years into teaching chemistry and German at the local Komenského 2 Primary School
Before introducing pupils from different social backgrounds to chemistry for the first time in their life
he asks: “What do a good lesson and a good teacher look like?”
Sarah and others answer Šinály
who asks them to point out to him anytime he steps out of the good-teacher zone
leading to a fruitful debate about chemistry and praising the most hard-working children before the bell rings
“A teacher must respect children and take into account their needs,” the graduate of the two-year Teach for Slovakia leadership programme said
pointing out that well-set rules between a teacher and their pupils are key to getting along and simultaneously meeting the teacher’s expectations for the performance of pupils
which first joined forces with Teach for Slovakia five years ago
Šinály is also the head teacher of a small class of Roma eighth and ninth graders with learning difficulties
These Roma pupils have been educated by different Teach for Slovakia teachers – as well as standard educators - from the fifth grade onwards
They consider Šinály to be a great teacher
“Teach for Slovakia teachers explain things and treat [Roma] pupils better,” said Roman
who wants to become an entrepreneur one day
He added that teachers paid less attention to him when he used to be in a predominantly white class
special education Roma classes are not deemed the best approach to the integration and education of Roma pupils according to the European Commission (EC)
The EC claims Slovakia has not done much when it comes to removing marginalisation in Slovakia’s mainstream education. About 62 percent of Roma children are estimated to be placed in separate Roma-only classes or in Roma-only schools, according to the 2016 data by the EU’s Agency for Fundamental Rights
Šinály noted it has not been common for pupils from these classes to make it to the ninth grade
The fact that there are ninth-graders in his class today suggests an improvement
“It is not just because of Teach for Slovakia since other teachers at the school have worked with them,” Šinály stressed
