The Thursday programme for next year’s Pohoda Festival will spotlight the legendary trip-hop band Massive Attack
who made their return to concert stages this year after a five-year break
We can expect nearly two hours of iconic tracks
Fronted by Robert “3-D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall
Massive Attack emerged from Bristol’s vibrant underground scene
known for its non-mainstream approach to music
While the band avoids being tied to specific labels
critics often credit them as the founders of trip-hop – a genre that offered an alternative to the pop and Britpop sounds of the 1990s
It is characterised by a unique combination of slow tempos
a fusion of hip-hop beats and soulful melodies
Their debut album, Blue Lines (1991), is considered the first-ever trip-hop album. As Patrik Garaj of Denník N noted in an article marking its 30th anniversary
Massive Attack "made history with it." Among its highlights is the beautiful trip-hop ballad
featuring Shara Nelson’s vocals and string arrangements recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios
This iconic track became an unofficial anthem for a generation and was ranked by The Guardian as the 10th greatest song of all time
Massive Attack not only evolved their sound but also collaborated with various artists
Their tracks feature contributions from Tracey Thorn of Everything But the Girl (“Protection”
Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio (“Pray for Rain”
One of the most memorable voices tied to their work is Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins. Her ethereal soprano is the highlight of the iconic Teardrop from the album Mezzanine (1998). You can revisit the remarkable story of this song by listening to the podcast Hudobné po(d)klady by Baláž Hubinák from Rádio_FM
is recognised as one of the 500 greatest albums of all time
and has earned five Brit Awards nominations
including Best Album and Best Video for the song “Teardrop”
Massive Attack returned to the stage this summer after a five-year break caused by the pandemic
health challenges within their extended group
and their commitments to political and environmental activism
Their summer concerts featured appearances by vocalist Elizabeth Fraser and Jamaican singer-songwriter Horace Andy
the band performed what could be described as the most sustainable concert ever
Partnering with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research
they implemented a 17-page report outlining recommendations to drastically reduce carbon emissions
The concert featured renewable energy-powered sound and lighting
If you want to make Massive Attack and the Pohoda team happy, head to the Trenčín airport in July by bike, shuttle bus
or even on foot—just don’t miss one of the highlights of the festival season

Norwegian company Kongsberg Aviation Maintenance Services and Slovak defence firm Letecké opravovne Trenčín (LOTN) have signed a teaming agreement aimed at creating a new Maintenance
and Overhaul (MRO) capability for F-16 aircraft in Slovakia
The facility will be based at LOTN’s existing aviation support site in Trenčín
enhancing its role in regional defence operations
The partnership intends to serve both new and legacy F-16 operators
providing advanced maintenance and logistics support from a strategically located and technically proficient centre
The agreement builds on LOTN’s ongoing work with the Slovak Air Force’s F-16 Block 70 fleet
“This initiative is a direct result of LOTN’s participation in the life cycle support of the Slovakian Air Force’s new generation F-16 Block 70 fleet,” said Juraj Laus
“Kongsberg is a very highly regarded player in this industry; teaming with them will allow us to expand our offering of services and capabilities which will benefit the Slovak Air Force and other NATO and Allied operators as well,” he added
Kongsberg brings over four decades of experience in F-16 support
accumulated through its long-standing relationship with the Norwegian Air Force
“The Norwegian Air Force’s transition from the F-16 to the F-35 has allowed KAMS the ability to apply our 40 years of F-16 MRO experience to opportunities outside of Norway,” said André Jægtvik
President of Kongsberg Aviation Maintenance Services
Jægtvik highlighted the strengths of both companies in the partnership
“Our designation as a Lockheed Martin approved Falcon Service Center for F-16s up to Block 52 combined with LOTN’s experienced labour force
modern infrastructure and Block 70 capability will provide a legitimate and strategically located option for F-16 support and services.”
LOTN is a state-owned Slovak company with a 75-year history in aircraft maintenance
including experience with various military platforms such as the Aero L-39
The company’s facility includes over 150,000 square feet of hangar and office space
along with a 2,000-metre runway and certified control tower
Kongsberg Aviation Maintenance Services, part of the Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace group, plays a key role in supporting Norway’s air defence operations and provides maintenance services for the Royal Norwegian Air Force’s F-35A fleet
Its expertise and certification as a Lockheed Martin service centre position it as a valuable partner in expanding F-16 support capacity across Europe

The discovery includes underground tunnels and ceramics
Archaeologists in Trenčín have uncovered the remains of a mediaeval barbican
long suspected to have been hidden beneath Sládkovičova Street
The discovery, made during a revitalisation project of the city’s pedestrian zone, also revealed a network of underground passages that once served as a sewage system in the Middle Ages, reports My Trenčín
The remnants of the city’s mediaeval castle system
which shed a new light on its defensive structures
“With archaeology and written records
we can now recreate the entire floor plan of the barbican and pre-castle fortifications in Trenčín,” said Drahoslav Hulínek
head of the excavation on Sládkovičova Street
stretched from the start of Sládkovičova Street
The walls extended on either side towards the gate
which featured another tower-like structure—its remains are visible on the floor plan,” Hulínek explained
The structure ranks among the most significant pre-castle fortifications in the former Kingdom of Hungary
highlighting Trenčín’s strategic importance in mediaeval times
The barbican is linked to King Sigismund of Luxembourg
who ruled during the Hussite raids - a series of military campaigns and conflicts during the early 15th century in Central Europe named after Jan Hus
a Czech reformer who challenged the Catholic Church
“This is one of the most fascinating barbicans ever,” said archaeologist Hulínek
“It was likely built primarily as a defence against Hussite raids from the Czech lands
Trenčín was a favourite city of King Sigismund
who often stayed at Trenčín Castle.”
The excavation revealed more than just the barbican’s walls
A network of underground tunnels and corridors
primarily serving as a mediaeval sewer system
“We discovered significant amounts of late mediaeval ceramics and glass spanning from the Middle Ages to the modern period,” Hulínek added
“There were also remnants of houses dating from the 15th to 19th centuries within the barbican area.”
While the main phase of the research has concluded
the archaeologists will now collaborate with historical architects to map out the site’s floor plan
using the masonry and layers uncovered during the dig
Further monitoring will take place during construction work on the site to safeguard any additional discoveries
“The backfilling process itself will be complex
requiring the careful layering of geotextiles and loose materials to protect the find,” Hulínek said
The team expected to uncover remains from Roman times
“What we found mainly reflects the Middle Ages and modern period,” said the archaeologist Alexej Skutin
“We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the mediaeval finds.”
once a bustling street lined with houses even into the 1970s
has now offered a rare glimpse into Trenčín’s layered history
"The inspection of all structures could not be completed sooner than within 24 hours
which makes it impossible to continue the festival programme”
Pohoda Festival in Slovakia has been cancelled midway through after one of its tent stages collapsed
Nearly 30,000 were in attendance at the festival
which is held near Trenčín airport in the north of the country
According to the Slovak Spectator, strong winds and a severe storm caused one of the festival’s large tents, Aréna Slovenskej sporiteľne, to collapse, with dozens of festival-goers inside. See footage of the accident below.
A post shared by Pohoda Festival (@pohodafestival)
The festival’s chief physician Jaroslav Vidan confirmed that 29 people had been injured by the accident late on Friday night (July 12)
before adding that all those injured had been taken to hospital
The festival confirmed that it had been cancelled at around midnight on Friday
writing on social media: “Based on the available information
the inspection of all structures could not be completed sooner than within 24 hours
which makes it impossible to continue the festival programme.”
“After carefully considering the time required to inspect the safety of festival structures
we have decided that we must end Pohoda 2024,” the organisers added
The festival was due to finish on Saturday, including sets by artists including Nia Archives, Black Pumas, Ezra Collective, Mount Kimbie and LA Priest
The dramatic weather had caused disruptions earlier in the day on Friday, with performances by Morcheeba and Royal Blood not taking place for safety reasons
before the decision was made to shut it down four hours later
Festival-goers had been warned not to stand near the tent’s poles due to the threat of lightning
but many people were thought to be seeking shelter from the storm in the tent
paid for extra buses to take people off site
and some of the artists including Fallgrapp opted to waive their pay to help the festival financially
Slovakian police also announced on Friday night that they had begun a criminal investigation into the collapse of the tent
It is not the first time that such circumstances have struck Pohoda Festival: in 2009, two people were killed and dozens of others injured when a tent collapsed due to heavy winds causing a thunderstorm.
The firm Laudauer-Weihnachtscircus, who built the tent that collapsed that year, was charged with public endangerment and was forced to pay £28,000 to the festival in damages.

the reconstruction of an old railway bridge in Trenčín
The plan is to transform the almost 250-metre-long bridge into a residential
promenade and green bridge that will connect both banks of the Váh river by the summer of 2026
The so-called Fiesta Most will include restaurants
The reconstruction worth more than €10 million will be paid for from EU funds as part of the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) 2026 project
Traipse through a region tangled in tales of romance, torture and prestige with the Trenčín Region Travel Guide
According to Trenčín Mayor Richard Rybníček
they had to resolve its property and legal issues
It was followed by a public procurement process
The old railway bridge has so far connected the two banks of the Váh River
but after reconstruction it is to become an extended part of the city centre
"The urban planning study counted on the bridge being designed as an important spot
We prepared the study with the intention that it would not be just a pedestrian zone
but a sort of a street with services and that people would spend their time there and that it would be their goal," explained Martin Beďaš
Space for sports activities will be provided as well
Five commercial units will be built on its lower part
The project is also important for the town in that it will fundamentally change the purpose of the bridge
Project manager Peter Fortner assumes that all work will be completed according to plan
"We have set aside 20 months for this and we will manage to do it in that time
Cleaning and painting work will be done in the first half of the year," he added
The total cost of the work is €10,424,250 with VAT
"The length of the public procurement process means that we will not be able to complete this bridge by the time of the ECOC 2026 opening ceremony
The completion date is the end of August 2026
we will be able to implement the ECOC 2026 program on the bridge," said Ján Forgáč
the bridge will be completely closed to the public
"It is not possible to carry out this construction without closing the bridge
People will have to put up with the fact that they will have to use other routes during the reconstruction
I believe that citizens will understand this," he concluded

a new archaeological investigation has commenced in the castle's chapel adjacent to Matthew's Tower
with the primary aim of uncovering the Gothic crypt beneath the Lord's Chapel
Archaeologists believe that behind one of the tomb's walls
there may be a passage leading to another chamber
The ongoing excavation seeks to uncover the full extent of the crypt beneath the chapel's altar, reports My Trenčín website
"We have successfully revealed the original staircase leading into the crypt
and have cleared about half the structure," explained lead archaeologist Juraj Malec
The crypt had been partially exposed in the latter half of the 20th century
and today's archaeologists are continuing the work initiated by their predecessors
Malec suggests that there may be a hidden passage within the northern wall of the crypt
potentially leading to an undiscovered room
The crypt itself is believed to date back to the late 17th century
which marks the 600th anniversary of the castle's acquisition by Barbara of Celje
the Holy Roman Empress and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia in the 15th century
began by removing the rubbish left behind from previous research
and revealing a significant portion of the crypt
Malec highlighted that the original rotunda
was demolished to make way for Barbara's Palace
This led to the construction of a new chapel
which began soon after Barbara of Celje took ownership of the castle
Although the exact completion date is unknown
surviving until 1790 when a fire ravaged the castle
was later rebuilt by the Zápolya family in the 16th century and by the Esterházy family in the 17th century
Archaeologists are also relying on a detailed technical diary from the previous excavation
"We are uncertain when the crypt was filled in
Previous excavators damaged the vault in two locations and discarded waste inside," Malec added
the crypt area was used as a guard dog kennel

The music event kicked off on Thursday night and was scheduled to conclude on Saturday
a popular music festival held at Trenčín airport since Thursday evening
prematurely ended on Friday night after strong winds and a severe storm caused one of the large tents to collapse on festivalgoers
Nearly 30,000 people were at the festival when the storm struck the airport
“Based on the available information, the inspection of all structures could not be completed sooner than within 24 hours, which makes it impossible to continue the festival programme,” the festival posted to social media
“After carefully considering the time required to inspect the safety of festival structures
we have decided that we must end Pohoda 2024,” the organisers added
which featured performances by British artists such as Arlo Parks
was originally scheduled to conclude on Saturday
organisers announced a suspension of the festival shortly after 20:00 on Friday due to approaching storms
The decision to end the festival came four hours later
the festival’s chief physician Jaroslav Vidan spoke of 29 injured people on Saturday afternoon
adding that all the injured people were transported to hospitals
it was estimated that dozens of people were inside the tent
people waiting for the concert to begin were warned not to stand near the tent’s poles due to the incoming storms and were informed that the programme would be interrupted
considered the tent a safe place and remained inside during the storm
The strong winds also damaged the tent of the news website Aktuality
and caused a prolonged power outage in the festival area
Many festivalgoers decided to leave the festival right after the storm
despite no official evacuation being declared
leading to traffic jams around the airport
Bus services between the airport and Trenčín train station were increased
and the city of Trenčín opened a sports hall for festivalgoers who had no place to sleep
paid for 10 evacuation buses that took festivalgoers to different Slovak cities
decided to forgo their performance pay to help the festival
“Pohoda for me is an island of freedom
Last year, the festival incurred a loss of €900,000, writes the Sme daily
The premature ending of the festival may lead to the worsening of financial problems
The police announced on Friday night that they have initiated a criminal investigation into the collapsed tent
a massive thunderstorm and gale-force winds also brought down a tent at Pohoda
the head of the German firm Laudauer-Weihnachtscircus
which built the tent at the festival under a contract
The incident claimed the lives of two festivalgoers and injured dozens more
It took nearly a decade for a judge to determine who was to blame for the tragedy
The firm was ordered to pay €33,000 in damages to the Pohoda organisers
the court said that Bossert could not be brought to trial due to serious psychological and psychiatric conditions he had been suffering from since 2009
As reported by the newspaper Sme in an article from July 15, 2024
the company ultimately did not pay €33,000 to the festival organisers
The newspaper explains that a German court
was supposed to decide on the compensation
the decision to suspend the prosecution of the German owner of the company was also annulled in 2023
The Regional Court in Trenčín ordered the District Court in Trenčín to decide the case again
It is currently unclear whether the district court will reopen the case or stop the prosecution of the German due to his alleged health issues
The firm supplies tents for some of the biggest festivals in Europe
As for the Slovenská sporiteľňa tent that collapsed on Friday night
the organisers said on Saturday that the owner of the Danish company responsible for constructing the tent was on his way to Trenčín
“The tent that collapsed was designed for wind speeds of 35 metres per second,” said Pohoda director Michal Kaščák
without specifying the wind speed during the storm at the airport
“The control systems at the airport tower went offline during the storm.”

a UK rabbi has joined a former rabbinical student to celebrate the inaugural service at a newly restored synagogue in Slovakia
where Rabbi Misha Kapustin is the rabbi of the shul
who played a pivotal role in Rabbi Kapustin’s rabbinical journey by ordaining him at the Leo Baeck College
shared a profound connection with him as Rabbi Kapustin later took on the role of student rabbi at The Ark
Speaking to the JC about the occasion at Trencin Synagogue
Rabbi Goldstein said: “The event itself was very significant as it was the first service in the almost restored synagogue and therefore very special.”
He added: “There was a crowd of 250 people at least,100 Jewish and the rest non-Jewish
as well as others from local Slovak communities
It was an event that united different communities.”
The reunion was not just a meeting of religious leaders but also a celebration of generational continuity
Rabbi Kapustin said: “It was a very moving and meaningful moment for me and my family
“To have Hannah's bat mitzvah in a newly restored synagogue in Trencin filled with people was a fascinating experience for all of us
Andrew Goldstein and his wife Sharon joined us and shared the joy with us.”
Rabbi Kapustin is from Ukraine and arrived in the UK to learn under Rabbi Goldstein when he was 18
He went on to become a rabbi in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv followed by Crimea
But he had to flee the peninsula with his family in 2014 as a result of the war against Russia
who has been regularly visiting Bratislava’s Jewish community for over 10 years
wanted to restart a Reform community out there and advocated for Rabbi Kapustin to lead the congregation
Jews have significantly contributed to Trencin since the 14th century
A wooden synagogue was built on the site in 1781
replaced in 1913 by a building which mixed Byzantine and Art Nouveau styles
World War Two devastated both Trencin’s Jewish community and the synagogue
which was repaired and reopened by Holocaust survivors between 1945 and 1948
When the socialist regime was in power between 1948 and 1989
they set up a clothing warehouse on its premises and much of the original aesthetic was destroyed
the building came under the management of the Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities in the Slovak Republic
it was returned to Trencin’s Jewish community
but was used less and less due to its deteriorating condition
The synagogue has now been revived to stand as the town’s centrepiece as Trencin gears up to be honoured as the City of European Culture in 2026
the Jewish community had just over 2,000 members
which is about 0.04% of the total population of Slovakia
The vast majority of Jews were murdered during the Holocaust

Reconstruction work on Trenčín Castle is set to begin in the coming months
and new event spaces opening up to visitors
we’ll be restoring the first castle gate
and the palaces in the upper castle," explained Trenčín Museum Director Peter Martinisko
"The largest investments—totalling up to €3.7 million—will go into the renovation of Jeremiah’s Bastion
The project will also include a completely new exhibition to replace the existing one."
The first castle gate is set to offer accommodation in the future
with its interiors undergoing a full-scale reconstruction
"The roof and all engineering networks will also be replaced
It will be accessible to those seeking a unique stay and will serve as a residence for artists coming to the castle to create their works,” said Martinisko
The lower courtyard of Trenčín Castle
along with all walking areas within the amphitheatre
A wooden walkway and staircase will be added to connect the barracks building to the tower
which will be made accessible via a new staircase across its four storeys
The surrounding paved area will also be repaired
will undergo a €800,000 transformation
The renovation will also open up a new viewpoint for visitors
and Ľudovít Palace will all undergo significant reconstruction
The Jeremiah Bastion will feature a multimedia presentation of the castle’s military history
"The tower has been renovated before but never properly maintained or made fully accessible
we’ll focus on its military and southern fortifications
with the exhibition doubling as a multimedia room for projection and interaction," Martinisko said
Zápoľský and Ľudovít Palaces will see a complete interior renovation
including a brand-new castle exhibition with modern displays to enrich the visitor experience
the sensitive nature of the monuments and the financial demands of construction pose challenges for these updates
visitors will only be able to access the castle through the already-renovated southern fortifications for a period
"We expect a drop in visitor numbers this year because of the work
but we hope to exceed the 200,000 annual visitor mark in 2026,” Martinisko added

Pohoda comes out swinging after disastrous conclusion to 2024 edition
it’s easy to get hit by the familiar numbness of seasonal depression
But fear not – summer is rumbling in the distance
several popular Slovak music festivals began dropping names from their 2025 lineups
We’re going to give you a preview of what is on offer
so you can keep your spirits high and start thinking about summer already
The Pohoda festival will take place next year from July 10 to 12 at Trenčín airport
just 90 minutes by train outside Bratislava.
Queens of the Stone Age are top of the billing for next year’s festival
The California desert rockers were set to headline Pohoda in 2024
but the band cancelled a string of their EU tour dates last summer as bandleader Josh Homme had to go back to the US for emergency medical care
Known for their hard hitting riffs and inventive sounds
Homme’s Queens are sure to draw many fans to Trenčín
moving with far more vigour and grace than many frontmen half his age.
Experimental hip-hop darling JPEGMAFIA will also be taking the stage at the airport
Peggy (as his fans affectionately call him) has built a devoted following with his layered
His production blends classic hip-hop rhythms with distorted industrial beats
Pohoda has a reputation for booking artists with a growing underground following online
and this year is no exception with the addition of Joey Valence & Brae
This hip-hop duo draws inspiration from acts like the Beastie Boys of the 1990s
delivering fast-paced bars packed with pop culture references over boom-bap beats infused with elements of drum and bass
an American singer-songwriter with a sound influenced heavily by grunge and alternative rock will also be appearing
and her performance next year will surely earn her a larger Slovak following
Ireland is also well-represented in the first round of announcements
rose from being darlings of the Dublin indie scene to achieving international stardom with their poetic brand of post-punk
they were nominated for a Grammy for their album A Hero’s Death
wowed audiences at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest
finishing sixth overall—Ireland’s best result in the competition since 2000
They describe their unique blend of industrial music and pop as “ouija-pop,” with witchcraft and Irish paganism influencing their lyrics and stage performances
Bambie was originally set to perform at this year’s festival
but their appearance was cancelled along with the rest of Pohoda 2024
The region hosts festivals similar to Pohoda
such as Colours of Ostrava in the Czech Republic
and Open’er Festival in northern Poland
comfort and chillness– is Slovakia’s longest running music festival
The festival is the brainchild of Slovak musical godfather Michal Kaščák
known to many Slovaks as the lead singer of the avant-garde rock group Bez Ladu A Skladu
The group acted as a subversive cultural force in the waning years of the Communist regime of Czechoslovakia.
This year’s storm and cancellation dealt yet another blow to the embattled festival
which was already facing a €1 million deficit due to the Covid-19 pandemic
organisers launched the Nekonečná Pohoda programme
offering 500 lifetime tickets to the festival for €990 each as a way to raise funds
also takes place at Trenčín airport
their sole announcement is the French electronic music duo Justice
Known for blending eminently danceable disco sensibilities with carefully chosen vocalists
their sound is sometimes described as a discount Daft Punk
Justice often brings a more aggressive edge to their music
Last year saw major international acts like Charlotte de Witte
alongside numerous staples of the Slovak music scene
We can expect more big names to be added to next year’s lineup soon
The current round of Early Bird tickets for Grape festival are €109 until December 31
If you prefer your music on the heavier side
the Gothoom Open Air Festival might be for you
Taking place outside Nitra from August 28 to 30
Next year’s lineup includes the British extreme metal band Anaal Nathrakh, Irish pagan metal stalwarts Primordial, and the one-man Norwegian black metal project Mork. The final lineup will feature over 30 extreme metal bands from Slovakia and around the world. Tickets are €75.
has announced an extensive lineup of performers
Many Bratislavans attend this festival due to its easy access from the Slovak capital
Taking place from June 11 to 14, the lineup features American nu-metal giants Linkin Park, Korn, and Slipknot, alongside prog-metal titans Dream Theatre. If you don’t want to wait another month to see Iggy Pop at Pohoda, you’ll be glad to know he’s also performing at Nova Rock. Nova Rock is a bit pricier, and will set you back at least €259,99 for a four-day camping ticket.
Once a symbol of Czechoslovakia’s fashion industry
Nehera is making waves on the international stage
“What struck me,” Ladislav Zdút told TV Markíza

July 13 (TASR) - The Pohoda music festival in Trencin was terminated early after Friday's (July 12) intense storm
which caused the collapse of a large tent and injured 15 people
the organizers posted on a social network at night from Friday to Saturday
making the decision after considering the timing of the safety check of the festival structures. "Based on the information available
the inspection of all structures couldn't take place before 24 hours
which makes it impossible to continue the festival programme
the safety of our guests is a priority and we believe that everyone will understand our decision
which we've made with great regret," they wrote
The rescuers treated 15 mostly slightly injured people aged 19-49
Two women aged 20 and 24 suffered more serious injuries
the Emergency Medical Service Operational Centre reported on a social network. The rescuers added that 14 of the injured were transported to hospitals in Trencin and Povazska Bystrica (Trencin region)

Far-right influencers sought to smear the gymnasium's reputation; students express disappointment
The Ľudovít Štúr Gymnasium in Trenčín has cancelled a planned memorial event that was meant to commemorate the victims of a terrorist attack that occurred in Bratislava two years ago
The 19-year-old perpetrator was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunhot wound
The gymnasium wanted to commemorate the victims of the attack, but was forced to cancel the event after coming under political pressure. The decision was made in response to numerous negative reactions to the initiative, which began spreading on social media after neo-fascist MEP Milan Mazurek (Republika) publicly criticised the event
labelling it "LGBT+ ideology propaganda"
disinformation media also criticised the event
they emphasised that there was no intent to spread any ideology
and that participation in the event was voluntary – as it had been at a commemorative event last year
was intended as a voluntary initiative to raise awareness about diversity
Students were invited to wear colourful clothes and create posters that would be displayed around the school
commemorating the two victims of the 2022 attack
"We also have students from this minority at our school
it will be two years since the terrorist attack at Tepláreň in Bratislava
It was a targeted attack against the LGBTI+ community
I believe it is important to stand up for the vulnerable
so it is human and understandable that we would commemorate the second anniversary of this event at school," said the teacher who organised the event and who wished to remain anonymous
She also emphasised that the event was completely voluntary and that no students were pressured to participate
after one student forwarded the details of the event from the Edupage system to a far-right media outlet
The event was portrayed in a negative light
and the teacher’s initiative was widely misinterpreted
“One of the students shared the message with Lívia from Kulturblog [a far-right influencer - Ed.]
distorting the purpose of the event and the activities planned for the day,” the teacher explained
The school administration decided to cancel the event to avoid further controversy
citing concerns about the spread of false information and the negative emotions being stirred up among the public
while others are against it,” the school stated
Many students expressed disappointment over the decision
“I’m really sad about it,” said student Jana
“When we remember victims of a terrorist attack because of their sexuality
like when we remember the day [investigative journalist Ján] Kuciak was killed
These were people who died unjustly because of who they were.”
echoed these feelings: “I’m very unhappy and disappointed
This was the only terrorist attack in Slovakia
and we should remember it to acknowledge its importance
A simple art exhibition and colourful clothing wouldn’t have hurt anyone.”
stating that the event had been widely misunderstood and misrepresented on social media
“We were assured that the school was not promoting any kind of ideology,” said Lenka Kukučková
The Education Ministry emphasised that schools should remain apolitical and focus on teaching human rights
mutual respect and tolerance – key pillars of a democratic society
Education Minister Tomáš Drucker (Hlas) condemned the attacks on the school and the teacher and stressed that the intimidation of schools
“Only the most politically desperate individuals
PM Robert Fico criticised the school for planning the event
the event was invented by some “deranged” professor
expressed disappointment over the school’s decision
“I am personally disheartened that the leadership of the gymnasium caved in to baseless claims of ‘promoting LGBTI+ ideology’,” he said
The city of Trenčín will commemorate the second anniversary of the attack on October 11

Hockey legend Marian Hossa recently published a memoir, “My Journey from Trencin to the Hall of Fame”. This autobiography comes in conjunction with his No. 81 being retired by the Chicago Blackhawks in the United Center rafters this Sunday
It’s a highly entertaining and informative read
following Hossa’s life and career from his childhood in Slovakia
to the present day with his upcoming honor in Chicago
Related – Blackhawks’ Legend Marian Hossa & His Hall of Fame Career
Hossa addresses his audience in first person in the book
just like he’s sitting there having a conversation with you
smiling photo of him on the cover is helpful in that regard
best known for his journalistic work with The Athletic
Powers obtained interviews with Hossa’s friends
It’s an excellent way to supplement Hossa’s own words to round out all the intricate details about the life of this amazing man
I’ll attempt to give you what I see as the highlights of Hossa’s journey through his life and hockey
But beware; this will likely just whet your appetite for more
but there was no part of the nineteen detailed chapters that I wanted to skim through or skip ahead
Hossa asked Joel Quenneville
the former bench boss got straight to the point with this first sentence:
I think of the perfect hockey player – no maintenance
Q goes on to discuss how Hossa always did the right things in the right areas
and as a coach he was spoiled to have him on his team
and was the most respected guy because he was such a “nice
He spoke a little bit about how it was a no-brainer to put Jonathan Toews and Hossa together
“I think certain individuals play the game to score points or get goals
and I think as a coach you don’t have a bigger appreciation for anything than that…having players that make the team a priority.”
Quenneville ended by saying he was flattered and honored “Hoss” asked him to write the foreword
Along with Hossa being the “perfect player”
Quenneville was the perfect man to write the foreword and set the tone for the book
He attempts to acquaint himself with the reader
One of the first things he feels it’s important for you to know is that he likes to be prepared
He proceeds to tell an extremely funny anecdote involving his wife
for the kitchen…I wanted to do some research before we bought one
I thought was the best from what I had read
but I was going to buy the Miele one as well
Hossa is meticulous in his everyday life as well as in his hockey life
She actually gets a chance to counter this a little bit later in the book
I’ve included some of her comments in the family section
The first few chapters of the book outline the start to Hossa’s NHL career
He was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 1997 as the 12th overall pick when he was 18 years old
He only played for seven games in the 1997-98 season before being sent down to the WHL Portland Winterhawks
Hossa talks about how much he learned there
He scored 58 goals and produced 104 points in 69 games between the regular season and the playoffs
and was voted the league’s rookie of the year
so Hossa gained a lot of playing time while experiencing a winning environment
Related – Reasons For Patrick Kane’s Scoring Slump
From there Hossa talks about his six seasons with the Senators, and playing with some big names including the Senators’ captain, defenseman Daniel Alfredsson
He was hoping to sign an extension when he became a restricted free agent after the 2003-04 season
But general manager John Muckler wasn’t willing to pay the salary that was the going market for Hossa’s skill set
and Hossa ended up being dealt to the Atlanta Thrashers
It was tough to go from a big hockey market in Ottawa to a non-hockey market in Atlanta
Bob Hartley was the coach and he was really hard on the players
So Hossa didn’t really have too much of a problem with him
There were some other milestones in Atlanta; he compiled 100 points in his second season
and there was a season where he scored seven shorthanded goals
This was also where he started his charity
He continues this charity to this day in Slovakia
(Other contributions to the community for Hossa include a multi-sport recreation center
and a rebranded food distribution company he started with his cousin many years ago
He discusses these business endeavors later in the book.)
Hossa with in his ninth NHL campaign and had turned 29 in the 2007-08 season
he told the Atlanta owners he would only consider re-signing if they brought in some more quality players for a better chance to go farther in the playoffs
Here, he was thrust into young group including the talented Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin
but they had never gone far in the playoffs
and the players all warned Hossa he was really hard on them
But Hossa thought Therrien was a big softie compared to Hartley in Atlanta
He goes into detail about his short amount of time in Pittsburgh and their playoff run where they eventually lost to the Detroit Red Wings
most people know how Hossa competed in three Stanley Cup Finals in a row
losing with the Penguins and then the Red Wings before winning with the Blackhawks
But did you know he turned down a couple very lucrative contract offers to sign a one-year deal with the Red Wings
Hossa was in the handshake line when the Red Wings beat the Penguins in the Cup Final, and Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said to Hossa, “Come to Detroit next year. We really want you.” He already had Detroit on his radar as a team he could learn from. He saw the advantages of playing with legends like Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterburg, Chris Chelios and Nick Lidstrom
He thought the experience would help him to be a better player in the long run
$7.5 million a year deal with the Penguins
as well as a huge potential $80 million deal with the Edmonton Oilers
When Hossa determined Detroit was the place for him
he knew the team had a cap situation where they would only be able to sign him short term
Negotiations started at one-year and $8.5 million
and apparently ended up at one-year and $8 million
But Red Wings’ general manager Ken Holland wanted to call their captain
and make sure he was ok with someone making more money than his $7.5 million
he immediately said he would sign for $7.4 million instead
and the opportunity to play with the best was a lot more important than the money
it ended up being more about the opportunity than the money
we all know Hossa and the Red Wings ended up losing to his former team
But Hossa says he still doesn’t regret his decision
because of what he learned that year and was eventually able to pass on to a young Blackhawks’ squad
He claims he learned how to play a proper 200-foot game
Our friend Marian actually gives some great insight about his time with the Red Wings
they had a routine where they used to take turns trying to take the puck away from each other
Hossa says this helped him so much defensively
He actually took this game to Chicago and taught it to the guys there
He said he loved that game and couldn’t wait until practice was over so they could play it
the book is peppered with interviews from friends and teammates
Co-author Powers even got some words from the quiet and introverted superstar Datsyuk
“He (Hossa) was always a team player on any team
He respected the team’s interest over his own…He also was never afraid of the dirty work.”
Powers also obtained interviews from Blackhawks’ superstars Toews and Kane
and it was interesting to get their perspective
I’d like to share a few other stories from Hossa about his time in Chicago
The first is when he had just signed with the team and went to the Blackhawks Convention over the summer
I had just come from Detroit where I was drinking wine with Nick Lidstrom and Chris Chelios
The second story is when the Blackhawks won the Cup for the first time in 2010
Toews and Hossa rode in the elevator together on their way back to their hotel rooms
you’re going to be the first guy I give the Cup to”
…this 22-year old kid is so confident and was willing to say what he said
It calmed me and allowed me to think about the game as any game and hope everything went right
We all know the Selke Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL forward who demonstrates the most skill in the defensive component of the game
It’s become customary over the years for this trophy to be awarded to a center
But what about those wingers just like Hossa who are also excellent two-way players
Hossa talks about how happy he is to have had such a successful career
But he laments the fact he never won an individual trophy
and his frustration with the way it’s determined
I thought there was one season with the Blackhawks I might have a chance with that because of my plus-minus
but I didn’t get many votes because I didn’t play center…They should call it the center’s trophy or something
because you have great defensive wingers and they’re not even considered
That does it; we need to start a petition for a new NHL award
specifically for the best defensive winger
Hossa was forced out of the game due to a skin condition
the veteran hockey player was able to keep it under wraps for a long time
but what would happen is there would be pus leaking from my skin if it didn’t have enough time to breathe
It was ugly and more so it made me uncomfortable
Those blisters itched and then I began scratching them and then there was blood
and tried so many things to alleviate the problem
In Blackhawks’ head physician Michael Terry’s words
it’s a “medication that we give people who have organ transplants so that they don’t reject the organs.”
These are heavy drugs that can cause serious side effects as well as kidney damage
Hossa knew he couldn’t take these kinds of risks with his body long term
He explains how when he finally made this decision he put the cyclosporine pills down the garbage shoot
Marian’s married his wife Jana in 2010 after he won the Cup for the first time
and they’ve been together for over 20 years
There are some great stories in the book about how they met
and navigated Marian’s career with family life
There’s a very enlightening excerpt from Jana
which gives a little bit of a different perspective on the vacuum cleaner story from the beginning of this article
It turns out Jana now runs a yoga studio back in Slovakia
and now the husband is supporting his wife’s career after she wholeheartedly supported his

Hossa also goes into detail about how his parents supported him growing up
and how he and his brother Marcel both attained their childhood dream of making it to the NHL
It’s obvious that family is very important to this legendary man
Hossa says he never thought about being inducted into the Hall of Fame
But then towards the end of his career people kept saying how it could be possible
played more than 1000 games (1309 overall)
scored more than 500 goals (525) and won three Stanley Cups
I just wanted to be remembered as a player who played the game the right way
Hossa disclosed he was honored and humbled to be voted in on the first year he was eligible
a pre-game observance before a Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs’ game
dinner with some former Blackhawks’ teammates
Hossa was introduced by his former Red Wings’ teammate and captain Nick Lidstrom
who he took a pay cut for years earlier during contract negotiations
He also thanked his former Slovakian coaches in their native language
In April of 2022 Hossa was able to attend Toews’ 1000 game ceremony
This trip is also when he signed his one-day contract to officially retire with the Blackhawks
this jersey retirement will transpire on Sunday before the Blackhawks/Penguins game
What a fitting way for Marian Hossa to go out! The hockey fairy tale has run its full course, and it sounds like Hossa is truly leading an enjoyable and blessed retirement as well. I’ll end this book review with the last few sentences of his autobiography, where Hossa describes the emotions of having his name and number raised to the United Center rafters
I know that will be up there long after I’m gone
There aren’t many players who have been given that honor
and I feel so lucky and grateful that it’s happening to me
I couldn’t have dreamed for a better ending to my hockey career

It would be awesome to get it to that next level."
Team Europe is the oldest team in the World Cup. Its identity is starkly juxtaposed against the theme of this tournament, which has been all about the promise of the future, the allure of young talent such as Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid and Patrik Laine

Trenčín is the hometown of NHL stars Marián Hossa
Zdeno Chara and Marián Gáborik – and now it could rename one of its streets after Lord Stanley’s Cup
The Chicago Blackhawks won their sixth Stanley Cup on Monday. Among the champions was forward Marián Hossa, who comes from the small Slovak city of Trenčín – which could very soon rename one of its streets after the prestigious trophy.

The final decision will be up to the city’s official and the three hockey stars
“I personally will be involved in determining how we can benefit from the fact that we have three NHL champions on one street,” Richard Rybníček
“The question right now is whether it will be a street
That is not to say that the city has not honored its hockey champions already
all three of the Stanley Cup winners had their names engraved on benches in Trenčín

seeing Hossa and Chara with the trophy was an extra motivation to him
“It’s really rare that the trophy would be passed between three man from one street,” Gáborik said at the time
He added that it was a great testament to a town with such a small population
“We can be proud of Trenčín and all of Slovakia.”
it might find itself traveling down the street named after itself
This is not the first time that a US-related name has been floated for a place in Slovakia
In 2012, 12,599 votes were cast in an online poll in favor of naming a pedestrian and cycling bridge in Slovakia after Chuck Norris. Local officials overruled the overwhelming vote and went with the second choice of Freedom Cycling Bridge, which earned just 457 votes.
Fresh off the back of a sixth-place finish at Super Cup NI, Manchester United now have a team of U19s over in Croatia competing in the Mladen Ramljak Memorial Tournament
The United Academy side will play four games in four days and have been joined in Group B by Rapid Vienna
Sunday will see the United – at the moment – playing in the final with a 10:30 am GMT kick-off
United are two games into the tournament and retain a 100% record
The Red Devils kicked off their tournament with an emphatic 5-0 win against Italian side Udinese – a score which has placed the team well for the rest of the tournament
In the game, 13-year-old Douka Nkoto continued his hot form from Northern Ireland with a goal here
which happened to be assisted by his twin brother Bassirou – it is absolutely insane that a pair of 13-year-olds are playing U19 football
Gabriele Biancheri followed up his brace against Chester with a goal against Udinese – which rounds out the 5-0 thrashing
Louie Bradbury also made his debut for the U19s here, as he confirmed on his Instagram story. He is another expected to be a regular this season – following an apparent 40-goal season in 2023/24
Friday morning brought with it the second game of the tournament for the U19s and it was another one-sided affair
with a 4-1 win over Trencin keeping the perfect record
grabbing a brace to make it five goals in his last three games
Also scoring were Fitzgerald and Thwaites while Elyh Harrison conceded one goal much to his disappointment we imagine
This win leaves United atop Group B with one group game left to play against Vienna
Saturday’s game against Vienna therefore will decide the group winner and who will be competing for the win on Sunday
against what looks likely to be either Dinamo or Juventus
United lost the 2023 final against Feyenoord and therefore will be desperate to make that right with a win here – possibly explaining the super-strong team.
