Two Air Force service members want a federal judge in Camden to block the Trump administration’s plan to remove them from the military because they are transgender
Master Sgt. Logan Ireland and Staff Sgt. Nicholas Bear Bade, both with ties to a South Jersey military base, face administrative separation hearings that could end their careers as early as March 26
They're seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent the hearings until other lawsuits resolve the legality of the transgender ban
The military has been open to transgender individuals since 2016
27 executive order that would ban transgender individuals
Trump said "expressing a false 'gender identity' divergent from an individual’s sex cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service."
The filing from Ireland and Bade describes the ban as a “purge” based on "animus," or bias
They contend it violates the civil rights of transgender personnel
Shared experiences: Transitioning in midlife and beyond
on Tuesday issued a preliminary injunction against the transgender ban
District Judge Ana Reyes will not take effect for a few days
allowing the administration time to file an emergency appeal
Ireland and Bade "are heartened by the DC decision," but will continue to seek protection from administrative hearings
said Jennifer Levi of GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD Law)
"The military is a large institution and this administration has been beyond aggressive in implementing measures to harm transgender people," Levi said in an email Wednesday
"They are asking the New Jersey federal district court to keep them from being harmed while the DC case moves forward."
Ireland and Bade had “exemplary” careers until they were “abruptly pulled from their duties just over a week ago,” according to the March 17 filing
was at a multi-week training program at the South Jersey base when he was ordered to return early to his home base in Hawaii
He joined the Air Force more than 14 years ago and is a flight chief in the Office of Special Investigations
a law enforcement and counterintelligence unit
until recently was deployed to a security force at an airbase in Kuwait
The six-year veteran was ordered to return to his home base
Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in South Jersey
Both service members have received multiple medals
and they hope to stay in the Air Force until retirement
“Both are in administrative limbo and face immediate and irreparable harm within days if the court does not intervene.”
said the filing by Marlton attorney John Stapleton
It noted that Ireland and Bade have suffered “stigma and reputational damage,” as well as ongoing access to their jobs
fellow members of their units and opportunities for advancement
the Trump administration’s actions have made public his transgender status
“exposing information that he previously treated as private medical information.”

The life of contemporary man is a mosaic of experiences
often contradictory and permeated by a sense of bewilderment and uncertainty
we find ourselves living in a condition of perpetual becoming
increasingly far from emotional and psychological stability
The deep pains that afflict us - be they related to loss
mental health or existence itself - seem to fragment ourselves
sculpting us into unexpected and sometimes dissonant forms
an inner struggle that many of us face but few are willing to express openly
art emerges as a beacon of hope and recompositing
has the power to capture the essence of fleeting moments
transforming them into lasting testimonies of our human experience
A significant example is the work of Lagos-born photographer Bade Fuwa
His works not only deal with grief and death
but also explore life in all its manifestations
from the intensity of pain to the fragile beauty that often eludes us
photography becomes a lens through which to observe the complexities of existence
He urges us to confront the brutality of reality
but does so with such sensitivity that he transforms drama into visual poetry
manage to create a dialogue with the viewer
encapsulating universal emotions that resonate in each of us
The beauty surrounding these scenes is not merely aesthetic; it is charged with meaning
serving as a vehicle for a deeper reflection on our human condition
Fuwa thus gives us a tool for understanding and healing
we can reconnect with what is most important to us: the emotions
photography becomes a medium through which we can process pain
find a kind of catharsis and rediscover beauty even in the darkest moments
allowing us to explore the boundary between life and death
between the fragility of existence and the power of art
can act as a bridge between our pain and our ability to be reborn
It reminds us that even in the most difficult times
there is always the possibility of reconnecting the pieces of ourselves
of finding a sense of unity and beauty that can resonate deep within our souls
The constant search for meaning in life is a continuous dance between light and shadow; through art
thus finding a sense of peace and fulfilment in this existence that is as complex as it is fascinating

the Frenchman has established himself as a key player for them as well as in the league
He has racked up 69 appearances and made four goal contributions for the La Liga outfit across all competitions
Bade was ever-present for Sevilla as he featured in 33 games in all competitions
he played a huge role for France in the Olympics
His impressive performances have drawn the attention of several clubs in Europe including the Reds
According to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo
Sevilla could be forced to sell Bade in the winter transfer window due to their financial situation
The report claims that Liverpool and Newcastle United are interested in the defender and could make a move for him
Bade has a €60million release clause but could be available for much less in January
The Frenchman still has almost five years left in his current contract with Los Rojiblancos
Van Dijk is expected to extend his stay at Anfield, by putting pen to paper on a new deal.
The 33-year-old earlier disclosed that talks have started over a new contract with the Reds
having already made his intention clear to wants to stay at the club
the club still wants to beef up the backline as they look to compete with the likes of Manchester and Arsenal in the Premier League
Bade will face stern competition from Van Dijk

A federal judge in Camden has issued an order shielding two transgender members of the Air Force from involuntary hearings that could end their military careers
Master Sgt. Logan Ireland, 37, and Staff Sgt. Nicholas Bear Bade, 44, want to continue their service pending resolution of a separate lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump's ban on transgender service members
District Court judge Christine O'Hearn said Ireland and Bade had "easily met" the requirements for a temporary restraining order
she said they had showed they were likely to win their argument that Trump's policy violates their civil rights
particularly the Equal Protection Clause of the Fifth Amendment
Transgender experience: People talk about transitioning in midlife and beyond
Ireland and Bade also would suffer irreparable harm if they were expelled from the military "after years of unblemished and decorated service ..
for no reason other than one's gender identity," O'Hearn's ruling said
Trump declared the transgender ban in an executive order Jan
27 that said "expressing a false 'gender identity' divergent from an individual’s sex cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service."
Both Ireland and Bade were "abruptly pulled" from active deployment as the Air Force moved to implement the ban
said a filing that sought the temporary restraining order
who joined the Air Force more than 17 years ago
is a flight chief in the Office of Special Investigations
He was ordered to leave a training program at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and was put on administrative leave at his home base in Hawaii
until recently was part of a security force at an airbase in Kuwait
O'Hearn said her temporary ruling would continue for at least 14 days
allowing the attorneys to pursue a longer-term preliminary injunction
A Pentagon representative has said the Department of Defense does not comment on pending litigation
A representative of the military members expressed relief at O'Hearn's decision
Ireland and Bade "had both already fallen victim to this administration's aggressive implementation of the ban," said Jennifer Levi of GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD Law)
"These airmen have risked everything to protect American freedoms — they deserve better than becoming the targets of a calculated
O'Hearn's ruling rebutted several arguments on behalf of the transgender ban
saying the Trump administration had no strong justification for making the change immediately
"particularly since transgender persons have been openly serving in the military for a number of years."
issued a preliminary injunction against Trump's transgender ban
The Camden judge said Reyes' ruling was "thorough and persuasive" and that she "is inclined to agree with much of it."
O'Hearn also rejected the government's "attempt to frame the harm to [the airmen] as a mere 'loss of employment.'" The judge's ruling asserted that view "grossly undervalues what is at stake" for Ireland and Bade
She said the loss of military service under a policy that targets gender identity is also "a profound disruption of personal dignity

assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience
$2.86 million grant to study effects of HIV-1 medicines on neurodevelopment during pregnancy
from the National Institutes of Health’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
making this a relatively early-career R01 approval
Bade is a decade younger than the national mean age for researchers to achieve their first NIH R01 or equivalent award
Bade drew from results he had acquired from studying the effects of antiretrovirals on the fetal neurodevelopment through his initial R21 grant that he received in 2021 from NIH/NICHD
Bade will be continuously supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for 10 years at the end of the R01 funding
it’s exciting to think that my research will bring educational and training opportunities to other graduate students and early-stage investigators at UNMC,” Dr
chair of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience and one of Dr
called it “simply remarkable to see the amazing rapid trajectory in research discovery made by Dr
Bade and in such short order. Here the mentee becomes the mentor and a collaborator becomes a principal scientist.”
Bade’s ability to take what he learned as a trainee then forge it into a unique research program that is of immediate international interest and doing so without missing a beat,” Dr
and the listed grant is only the beginning of his upward trajectory.”
The preliminary work from previously NIH/NICHD supported research led to the new grant
Bade and his team to identify underlying mechanisms of commonly used antiretroviral drugs-associated adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes
as well as develop intervention strategies to maximize the safety and therapeutic efficacy of these ARVs during pregnancy
Bade said he was excited about the project
“This is an area that is completely unexplored,” he said
“Not many labs are focused on looking at how these antiretrovirals might affect fetal development
Bade was the first researcher to report that
a first-line antiretroviral drug called dolutegravir reaches fetal brain during pregnancy and inhibits activity of matrix metalloproteinases proteins
“Such drug-induced secondary action can affect neurodevelopmental process,” he said
His new research will further assess how inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases proteins can adversely affect developmental neuronal processes during pre- and postnatal development and how that may be linked to neurobehavioral outcomes
“We will use long-acting formulations as potential delivery means to limit the drug exposure to fetal brain during pregnancy to hopefully improve neurodevelopmental outcomes,” he said
we hope such platforms can be extended to other ARVs to improve safety during pregnancy
Perhaps the platforms can be employed on other medications utilized during pregnancy as well.”
of the Mayo Clinic Division of Neurological Disorders Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology & Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine
“Dolutegravir (DTG) is taken by millions of people worldwide
including as first-line treatment for women who are living with HIV and who are pregnant or of childbearing age,” Dr
we know very little about the impact of in utero exposure to DTG on the fetal brain and subsequent neurodevelopment
Bade’s study represents an important step toward addressing this knowledge gap
and I am very excited and eager to work with him as he launches this exciting project.”
While the majority of the research work will be completed in research animal models at UNMC
Cassidy’s ongoing clinical study in Botswana for cross-validation of the scientific findings of neurological outcomes and biomarker discovery
Bade said: “My ultimate goal is that my research will contribute to improving the health outcomes of fetus and mother following ARV exposures during gestation and enhance the safety and therapeutic efficacy of widely utilized antiretroviral drugs during pregnancy.”
It has been a privilege to witness your growth and success over the past several years

Scans show Onana is expected to at least miss Villa’s upcoming matches against West Ham and Celtic in the Champions League
Onana’s injury has left Unai Emery short of options in central midfield
with Ross Barkley (calf) and John McGinn (hamstring) having been unavailable in recent weeks
Since joining from Everton in a club record £50million $64.6m deal
picking up an ankle and a previous hamstring injury earlier in the season
The 23-year-old has made 21 appearances across all competitions this season

There has been no shortage of transfer news
Here are the big headlines of the day so far:
So stay tuned and we will bring you all the best of The Athletic’s coverage right here
Spanish side Real Valladolid have accused Manchester City of “appearing to advise” their centre-back Juma Bah to “breach his contract” in order to secure a transfer to the Premier League champions
The situation centres on Bah’s current contract with Valladolid
which is a youth contract despite him playing with the first team since September
A Valladolid statement on Wednesday said that Bah had refused improved contract offers and had refused to sign the player’s license with the first team
which would have automatically increased the mandatory release clause that is included in all contracts in Spain
That statement adds the RFEF (Spanish FA) has told Valladolid that Bah has already deposited the required amount to terminate his contract as per his current release clause
Valladolid say they reserve the right to take legal and sporting action
Valladolid said City had made them aware of their interest in the defender the previous day
and that Bah subsequently did not report for training on January 22

Matheus Cunha’s situation could define Wolves’ season
even if nothing dramatic happens in the final 12 days of the winter transfer window
The club’s stance on Cunha and his future has been clear for a while — they have no intention of selling him in this window
and there is no financial need for them to do so
before the deadline at 11pm UK time on February 3
this position of determination will come into direct conflict with the realities of modern football
There are lots of moving parts in Cunha’s situation
but the essential facts are fairly straightforward
His current contract runs until summer 2027
and he and the club have been in talks for a while about an extension
At the time of writing it had still not been finalised
Other clubs are inevitably taking a look at a player who has proved himself as a Premier League match-winner
with Nottingham Forest reportedly interested
But Wolves have yet to receive any official enquiries or bids
How Wolves handle the Matheus Cunha situation could define their season
actually they have said something more like
it’s you’ and have dumped the video assistant referee system (VAR)
Clubs in Norway’s top two divisions took a vote and decided to discontinue the use of VAR in their domestic leagues
the organisation that represents clubs in Norway’s Eliteserien and First Division
passed a motion that “requests that the Norway Football Federation (NFF) board recommend
the discontinuation of video-assisted refereeing (“VAR”) as soon as possible.”
Nineteen teams voted in favour of scrapping the technology
We can only dream of a similar scenario in the Premier League..
Norwegian clubs vote to scrap VAR after supporter protests
Some contract news out of Barcelona for you — Ronald Araujo is set to sign a new six-and-a-half-year deal while Pedri is also in talks
Araujo had been subject to some interest this month
He is now set to sign a new deal with Barca through to 2031
His current deal was due to expire in 2026
The 25-year-old’s new contract does not rule out his departure in the coming seasons
with a consensus on both sides of the negotiation that the club would consider a proposal that would represent a good deal for both parties
Meanwhile talks with 22-year-old Pedri are progressing well and on track for a long-term commitment
Ronald Araujo set to sign new Barcelona deal; Pedri in contract extension talks
it is easy to forget that a football club needs two things to spend in a transfer window: room for manoeuvre on financial fair play and enough cold
hard cash to pay for signings in the first place
but Manchester United are yet to make a signing due to a need to balance any incomings with outgoings
That may come as a surprise to anyone glancing at the most recent set of accounts
United had a healthy bank balance of £149.6m
You’d think that would still leave enough loose change lying around to buy Ruben Amorim a left wing-back and maybe United will
having held talks with Lecce to sign Patrick Dorgu this week
though: United’s pile of cash has not been generated by the club itself
It has come through either short-term loans
which carry interest charges and will one day need to be paid back
which is earmarked for upgrades to facilities at Old Trafford and Carrington
Brighton & Hove Albion’s renewed interest in Eiran Cashin has been jeopardised by a defensive injury crisis at Derby County
Brighton want to add a central defender to the squad
with Brazilian Igor Julio ruled out for the rest of the season after hamstring surgery
They have turned their attention back to 23-year-old Cashin
The former Republic of Ireland youth international was not risked in Tuesday’s 1-0 home defeat for Derby against Sunderland
He has only just recovered from a tendon injury and the Championship strugglers have other injury concerns at the back
Centre-back Curtis Nelson has been ruled out for the remainder of the season this week after suffering knee ligament damage
Ipswich Town have completed the signing of forward Julio Enciso on loan from Brighton for the rest of the season
The loan deal does not include an option to make the move permanent and Ipswich will cover Enciso’s wages in full
The Paraguay international has been keen on a move away from the Amex Stadium in a bid to get more game time after being reduced to a bit-part role this campaign
Enciso becomes Ipswich’s third January signing after the arrivals of defender Ben Godfrey and winger Jaden Philogene

Eric Garcia is set to stay at the club despite attracting interest from elsewhere in the January transfer window
The Athletic reported this week in the DealSheet that Garcia was on Barcelona’s list of potential departures and had been the subject of interest from Girona
The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at Girona and came off the bench on Tuesday to score an 86th-minute equaliser as Barcelona beat Benfica 5-4 in the Champions League
said head coach Hansi Flick told Garcia that after his Benfica display he did not want to let him leave in January as he still had an important role to play this season
There’s more on this one from Pol Ballus below
Eric Garcia set to remain at Barcelona despite January interest
It always looked like Renato Veiga would be on his way out at Stamford Bridge this month and we have a breakthrough
As reported by our Chelsea correspondent Simon Johnson
Juventus have verbally ahreed a loan deal with the London club to take Veiga on loan
The Serie A side will pay a loan fee of €5million ($5.21m) with a possible €1m due in bonuses
There is no buy option in the agreement and Veiga will return to Chelsea ahead of the Club World Cup
The 21-year-old has played 18 games for Chelsea but has started just one Premier League match and has primarily been used in their Conference League campaign
starting all eight matches in the competition and scoring in the victories over Astana and Gent
Juventus verbally agree Renato Veiga loan deal with Chelsea
Fenerbahce have signed defender Diego Carlos from Aston Villa
The Turkish club are paying their Premier League counterparts a fee worth €10million (£8.46m)
The 31-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with his new club
Carlos started eight Premier League matches for Villa this season after falling behind Ezri Konsa
Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres in the centre-back pecking order
Carlos joined Villa from Sevilla in the summer of 2022 but ruptured his Achilles tendon in his second appearance for the club
which ruled him out of action for nine months
who won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 and claimed gold with Brazil at the 2020 Olympics
has made 58 appearances for Villa and scored one goal
there’s another in the pipeline involving Manchester City — and this one is an exit
Club captain Kyle Walker is flying to Milan (specifically AC Milan) today to complete his loan move to the Serie A club — as reported by James Horncastle and Sam Lee below
Milan will also hold an option to make the move permanent in the summer
Walker has 18 months remaining on his City contract
but earlier in the window City manager Pep Guardiola made public the 34-year-old’s desire to leave the club after eight seasons at the Etihad Stadium
The link below has all the wider context you need on this one
which now looks like it’s getting close to the finish line
Manchester City’s defeat in Paris last night means they are on the brink of Champions League elimination — while Milan are sat in the top eight
which would earn them automatic qualification for the round of 16

On the announcement of his signing to City’s website

players have everything they need to become better
That was really enticing for me when I had the chance to come here
“And I cannot deny I also want to win trophies
City have been the most successful club in England for many
so I know I am joining a winning environment and winning culture
I want to learn from the staff and my teammates
and I want to become a valued member of this winning team.”
it’s not quite that winning environment this season that it has been — but maybe that is only temporary
Here is the confirmation from our Manchester City correspondent Sam Lee
this one has been in the works for a while — otherwise people would start wondering if this was some sort of reaction to that desperate Champions League night in Paris a few hours ago
Man City have paid Eintracht Frankfurt a fee in the region of €70million (£59m) plus bonuses for Marmoush
who leaves the Bundesliga having signed a deal that ties him down until the summer of 2029
There is a bit of noise that this won’t be the end of the Manchester City news today either — but let’s play that one by ear from here
you can read Sam’s report on Marmoush’s move below

Artistes with the director rehearsing for the plays Bade Miyan Deewane and Phir Se Shaadi that will be staged in Lucknow
It's playtime once again with Repertwahr Weekends making a comeback after six months
Two plays — Bade Miyan Deewane and Phir Se Shaadi — will be staged at the Sant Gadge Auditorium of Uttar Sangeet Natak Academy on April 12 and 13
“I am an Aligarh Muslim University alumnus
I have worked here with theatre personalities Nadira Babbar and Purva Naresh
I launched Rangbaaz Production in 2010 with Bade Miyan Deewane
but I never got a chance to bring any of my 15 productions to Lucknow,” said Rasheed
who will be taking up the leading roles in both plays
“Actor Danish Hussain usually plays the main role
it’s always handy for the director to take it up and do justice to the role as and when needed
and I have even directed it into a film with actors Sharib Hashmi
but we are struggling for its release,” he added
The actors that will be seen in both plays include Yudhvir Dahiya
Bhoopesh Rai of Repertwahr Foundation says
“It’s our endeavour to present good plays to the theatre-loving audience in Lucknow
Bade Miyan Deewane is about a rich octogenarian who falls in love with a young girl in his neighbourhood
The other play revolves around a Muslim divorced couple who find out that they still love each other
