Recently, United Airlines announced an incredible international expansion
whereby the airline added eight new destinations
What made this so cool is how far-flung some of the new destinations are
I have a confession to make — this might be the first airport ever added by a US airline where I had to look up at the airport code
which shows just creative United’s expansion is
The 1,508-mile flight will operate with the following schedule, as flagged by AeroRoutes:UA837 Tokyo to Kaohsiung departing 5:30PM arriving 9:00PMUA838 Kaohsiung to Tokyo departing 10:25AM arriving 3:15PMUnited will fly from Tokyo Narita to KaohsiungThe flight from Tokyo Narita is blocked at 4hr30min
while the flight to Tokyo Narita is blocked at 3hr50min
United intends to use a Boeing 737-800 for the route, featuring 166 seats. Yes, this is the same plane you’ll find on many domestic United routes. It’s configured with 16 (domestic) first class seats and 150 economy seats. United will be marketing the forward cabin on this flight as business class, unlike on its Newark to Greenland flight
where the forward cabin of the 737 is marketed as premium economy. This will be the first time in over 20 years that a US airline flies to Kaohsiung
Northwest was the last airline to operate this exact route
Meanwhile Continental Micronesia flew to Kaohsiung until 1998.Why is United flying to Kaohsiung
there’s a lot about this route that may confuse people
And why would United fly a Boeing 737 there
I love United’s willingness to try new concepts
There are a couple of main reasons that United flying 737s out of Tokyo Narita could make sense:United continues to have a robust transpacific network out of Tokyo Narita
rather than just out of Tokyo Haneda (HND)
so there’s value in having connectivity; meanwhile Delta has completely pulled out of the airport
while American just has a small presenceUnited has a joint venture with All Nippon Airways
but the airline actually doesn’t have that huge of a regional network out of Narita
partly because ANA doesn’t have many narrow body regional jets
which are needed for the economics of some routes to workSo with its expansion at Tokyo Narita
clearly United hopes it can capture some connecting transpacific traffic
Clearly Kaohsiung is a market where United feels there’s strong year-round demand
the market is already served by several airlines
and Tigerair Taiwan. It remains to be seen if this route succeeds in the long run
One thing is for sure — I commend United for its creativity
as it’s not something we often see from US airlines.United’s Boeing 737 “business class”Bottom lineAs of July 2025
United will be launching daily flights between Tokyo and Kaohsiung using Boeing 737s
This is part of United’s strategy of shifting some 737s from Guam to Tokyo
because it sure is fun to see a US airline so dedicated to maintaining fifth freedom flights from Asia
Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value"
Travelers will be surprised and delighted with the domestic business class experience
Especially when they could take Starlux business or a 787 EVA business class from Tokyo
It is being served by an underwhelming ac with a US carrier
It's a bit funny to see those "But how could United compete with Asian carriers" comments
US carriers has been flying intra-Asia flights before and they had a way to make it work
US carriers would boost their service level when competing with Asian airlines
They just don't want to do it until being forced to
I flew UA's trans-pacific flights several times
there is history of how US carriers do not just on this route but also for intra-Asia flights as a whole
UA discontinued its NRT hub just like DL because widebody aircraft can be used more efficiently in US to foreign destination and narrowbodies can be used most efficiently (and generate the greatest profit) in domestic service
The whole reason why UA is adding KHH w/ a domestic..
The whole reason why UA is adding KHH w/ a domestic aircraft is because NH doesn't fly it
in part because NH has a relatively few narrowbody aircraft
and because the UA GUM hub is not doing well so they have to find places to move those planes
the efficiencies of the GUM grow too little for it to operate as a hub - both from a pilot and aircraft scheduling standpoint
KHH and all of the beyond NRT 737 flying is a lose-less strategy
US carriers get very little premium traffic in any 5th freedom operations worldwide - which is why there are so few of them left
Anyone that understands the industry knows all of that so the legitimate question can be asked "why is this different than in the past" which leads to highlighting real facts that some people simply don't want to admit
it looks like NRT-ROR nonstop is the last of the recently announced United expansion routes that is not on sale and doesn't even have a schedule
Seems strange to wait that long for a spring flight to be loaded
I had to look up for myself what EVA Air's business class looks like on this route
which is also listed as current on FlightConnections
I found that China Airlines flies an a321neo with 2-2 lie flat seats in a luxurious shell design
with a total of 180 passengers on its A321neo
split into 168 in Economy Class and 12 in Business Class
while EVA Air's A321 features 184 seats in a heavy configuration of 180 economy and just 4 business class seats
These seats sell for between $700-900 one way in the month of December
As KHH or KIA based UA gold this is great news
I feel like stating the relevance of Kaohsiung would have been a beneficial addition:
Kaohsiung is vital to Taiwan's economy since its main port is located there
handling most of Taiwan's container volume for import/export
Kaohsiung is the third largest city in Taiwan
Kaohsiung International Airport is the second busiest airport in Taiwan
There are several chip factories located in southern Taiwan that didn’t exist 20 years ago
I’m guessing UA is trying to capture United members who are flying from US to that part of Taiwan for work
It's not something new and creative if NW flew it just over 20 years ago which they did
as for the comment about AA and DL's size at NRT
DL doesn't have to support a JV partner at NRT by maintaining transpacific flights to/from NRT w/ less and less local Tokyo traffic on them
UA's only choice to keep traffic flowing over NRT is to take domestic aircraft which could be used on their domestic..
an airport that not only has far more connecting flights beyond ICN than NRT or HND but ICN is a larger local market than NRT is
I know you relay facts (sometimes) but it’s very hard to take you seriously with your obvious bias towards DAL and against UAL
I know that every airline has its true ride or die fanboys
but I feel like your posts would be received more positively if you didn’t always come across as the biggest hater
I’m not that smart but it’s just my 2 cents FWIW
The constant need to highlight DAL in other airline threads is a turn off though
I understand we can choose just not read your comments but less passive aggressive hate would probably be appreciated
it's not about denigrating UAL or elevating DAL
and the simple fact whether you or anyone wants to admit it or not is that the opening of HND has destroyed the local Tokyo market at NRT because the highest value traffic is moving to HND
That is simply a confirmable fact for those that have access to..
That is simply a confirmable fact for those that have access to data to confirm it
AA and UA got JVs with JL and NH in return for Open Skies; DL realized it was time to consolidate at HND and get the most service it could - it is still the largest foreign carrier at HND just as it was at NRT - and DL built a JV at ICN with KE that not only has a larger local market but more connectivity now and the potential for far larger TPAC growth for DL and KE
and then when you consider how much UA has talked about growing its domestic network but is taking domestic aircraft to fly international routes - including to pump traffic through the dying NRT hub - you truly have to ask if UA has lost the plot IT created for itself all in the name of creating sexy route maps
AA and DL are simply adding more TATL capacity in 2025 and
while DL is likely to add even more TPAC routes
it is already adding more TPAC capacity for 2025
For an airline that incessantly talks about growth and the size of its network
any halfway objective person can't help but ask the question if DL might have outsmarted UA in its fleet acquisition and network strategies and DL makes more money than UA doing it - with the only real difference that DL doesn't care about trying to wow anyone with dots and lines on a route map
and the same thing can be said to a lesser degree about AA compared to UA
It has nothing to do with a fan of any company - it is about being able to critically see news and developments for what they are - and are not in light of what each company has said they intend to do and how they compare to competitors now and in the future
we all know it’s only new and unique if you decree it so
even though only a small amount of capacity was cut
in spite of UA showing they’re willing to cut unprofitable flights
UA is a wreck to Asia but overall financial performance is similar
where is UA outperforming DL to make up for the subpar Asia performance
I don't have profitability by route and neither do you so I can't tell you what was bad
Cranky did publish load factor data for the winter 2023-24 period and he identified several S
Japan and China routes that had very low LFs
UA has pulled back in each of those low LF routes and
they didn't return to some of their LAX - S
UA's TPAC profitability for the 2nd quarter of 2024 was the most proportional to capacity to DL's profitability than it has been in years
This simply confirms to me that UA has the capability at least during parts of the year to generate profitability as good as or better than DL's - and they came very close to that this summer
other than the fact that UA has not brought its FAs up to industry standard pay
largely seasonal summer 2024 schedule is a pretty low risk way to put more dotes and lines on their route map (which clearly fascinates a lot of UA execs and Ben) but comes at the cost of UA's domestic system
Despite getting so few new narrowbody deliveries - and most will be A321NEOs rather than MAXs - UA is more interesting in these "sexy' new narrowbody less than daily largely seasonal routes than they are in building up their domestic network which they have said for years is their goal
And as much as you or anyone else want to argue about the greatness of UA's international network
DL's domestic system is not only much larger than UA's but DL's domestic network is far more profitable than any other US airline's domestic network - and UA seems less and less focused on trying to challenge DL at what DL does best even as DL still is growing its int'l network faster than UA in 2025 and that is going to only accelerate as DL receives large numbers of large and much more efficient A350s
and yet united IS a for-profit company and you are beyond ignorant if you think that companies can make decisions that result in less-than-optimal profitability just so they can pursue "strategic purposes"
Further United has talked endlessly about beating or exceeding Delta's profits so your interests aren't aligned with what United itself says it wants
United spent the latest 2010s - right before the pandemic - flying all kinds of routes across the Pacific that..
United spent the latest 2010s - right before the pandemic - flying all kinds of routes across the Pacific that didn't make money - just as American did
kept cutting routes but was the ONLY profitable US carrier across the Pacific
Delta is now rebuilding its Pacific operation and doing it from a position of far more financial strength and with far better assets - BECAUSE it did the tough work of cutting what didn't work and in coming up w/ a plan to be far more profitable flying the Pacific than any US airline
and perhaps more than other Pacific airlines
While you and others gets excited about dots and lines on a route map
other players will do what is necessary to become far more profitable and do it on a consistent basis
UA has proven it can be just about as profitable on an ASM basis in the best of the peak season - and that it won't do stupid
share grabbing stunts like it tried in the late 2010s and in last winter
If you are incapable of realizing that United itself is going to quit doing things that don't or won't make money
then the entire airline industry goes over your head
KHH might make money but much of what they announced is not growth but seasonal
narrowbody service that doesn't move the needle of their international network one iota on a year round basis
Other airlines like Delta that are committed to sustained profitable flights will grow including in regions like Asia/Pacific where United is diverting domestic resources to try to keep ahead its dying hub at NRT which DL worked away from almost 5 years ago
all japanese and taiwanese full service airlines are 5* and united is 2*
how stupid do you have to be to fly a 2* airline with a very long history of unsafe flights and not japanese or taiwanese airlines
even japanese budget airlines are better than any american airlines
waiting for flights to be cancelled i guess..
you should not put in too much care about the SkyTrax ratings
Winnie the Xi will probably launch a blockade by 2027 so this flight won't run for that long
This flight is not CPU eligible: https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/mileageplus/upgrades.html#select-flights
I can see this being both good and bad for United
It's about a 3 hour MRT ride from TPE to KHH + factoring in immigration and going from KHH to your final destination in Taiwan
So it ends up being about a 4 hour extension after flying 12+ hours long haul
while also having to tote around heavy checked bags
The UA KHH flight will give people a chance to rest up in NRT,..
The UA KHH flight will give people a chance to rest up in NRT
shower in the UA Club or ANA lounges and won't really increase their total time since NRT is 2 to 3 hours shorter than the TPE flight
I just wonder how this will affect their TPE yields and load factors
Right now UA is selling a lot of interline to CX for this route via HKG and I guess they want to reduce the spillage
can you write a post on why is UA being allowed to fly regional flights out of Japan
These are the seventh freedom flights - at the seventh freedom
a foreign airline can set a base in a country and operate flights to a third party country
UA inherited the right from Pan Am when they bought Pan Am's TPAC network back in the late '80s
Pan Am and Northwest got rights to have a hub in Tokyo and operated it for several decades
Northwest Airlines served KHH in the late 1990's using 757's
There was also a KHH-LAX non-stop on EVA but it didn't last long
and as descendants of the Republican government
Taiwanese should take the reins from the impostor "govt" in Beijing
KHH is an underrated city and very inexpensive
you should really review their Island Hopper

A cat named Mikan (蜜柑) has brought in revenue of more than NT$10 million (US$305,390) for the Kaohsiung MRT last year
was a stray cat before being adopted by personnel of Kaohsiung MRT’s Ciaotou Sugar Refinery Station
Mikan was named after a Japanese term for mandarin orange due to his color and because he looks like an orange when curled up
He was named “station master” of Ciaotou Sugar Refinery Station in September 2020
along with the release of a set of cultural and creative products
station master Mikan has gained huge popularity and was even visited by then-president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) at the station in March 2021
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) also allowed Mikan to stand on his office desk
The Kaohsiung MRT said Mikan works only one day a month to meet with fans and enjoys a cozy life at the headquarters on other days
with an exclusive workspace overlooking the city and someone to look after him
“Master Mikan’s selling point is being adorable,” it said
the Kaohsiung MRT has designed more than 120 different products featuring Mikan
which have been ardently collected by his fans and passengers
Sales soared after a Mikan counter was launched at Zuoying Station in July last year
with annual revenue increasing 25 percent to more than NT$10 million from the previous year
The Kaohsiung MRT also opened Instagram and Facebook accounts for Mikan
recording his life and encouraging people to treat stray animals with kindness
Mikan’s Instagram has 184,000 followers as of yesterday
90 percent of whom are from Taiwan and 10 percent from overseas
the US and Japan being the top three countries
The Kaohsiung MRT said it would take responsibility of caring for Mikan and ensuring his well-being
while developing the station master’s brand by advocating for stray animals’ welfare
marketing the city’s tourism and promoting international exchanges
It would continue to develop new merchandise of Mikan
and take part in this year’s Creative Expo Taiwan to gain traction in the souvenir market and the creative industry
The Kaohsiung MRT on Friday last week said it signed a three-party agreement on tourism marketing and business cooperation with Japan’s Enoden Electric Railway and Keifuku Electric Railroad Co
Mikan’s cobranded products and promotional activities would be launched concurrently in Taiwan and Japan
with images of Mikan wearing the three railway companies’ uniforms
adding that merchandise counters would also be set up at major stations along the two Japanese railway routes
“Mikan diplomacy” is expected to promote the friendship between Taiwan and Japan
April 16 (CNA) A Japanese BBQ chain restaurant in Kaohsiung has been ordered to suspend operations after four people reported symptoms of suspected food poisoning
the city's health authorities said Wednesday
The Kaohsiung Department of Health said it received reports from two hospitals between Monday and Tuesday
each involving two individuals who experienced gastrointestinal symptoms after dining at the Tan Zuo Ma Li Catering Series outlet at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts
A netizen had earlier posted that eight adults in their group fell ill with similar symptoms between Sunday and Monday and were diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis
Other diners also reported on social media that they and their family members suffered from vomiting
and fever after eating at the same location
Tan Zuo Ma Li Catering Series issued a statement in which it said food safety has always been its "top priority."
Initial inspections revealed numerous hygiene violations
including mold and dirt near the dishwashing area
Inspectors also found customer drinks stored in the restaurant's refrigerators and excessive dust near freezer compressors
Health officials have collected samples from eight suspected food items and the restaurant environment
along with 11 specimens from affected individuals and kitchen staff
Although the restaurant has contracted a licensed pest control company for regular disinfection
the Department of Health emphasized the importance of preventive food safety measures and ordered all issues to be corrected by Wednesday
The restaurant can only resume operations after passing a follow-up inspection
Failure to comply could result in fines ranging from NT$60,000 (US$1,845) to NT$200 million
The Kaohsiung District Court yesterday approved the detention of a 73-year-old man for allegedly murdering three women
was arrested on Wednesday evening in connection with the death of a 71-year-old woman surnamed Chao (趙)
The Kaohsiung City Police Department yesterday also unveiled the identities of two other possible victims in the serial killing case
and a 75-year-old woman surnamed Chang (張)
The case came to light when Chao disappeared after taking the suspect back to his residence on Sunday
found the suspect left his residence 12 times the next day
five times taking a bag with him and dumping the contents in the Cianjhen River (前鎮溪)
Forensic experts discovered biological material at the suspect’s residence such as blood
which prompted police to suspect him of murder
police deduced that he killed Chao and disposed of the body in the river after dismembering it
Kaohsiung Police Commissioner Lin Yen-tien (林炎田) yesterday said that the DNA of the remains retrieved from the river matched Chao’s blood samples collected at the suspect’s residence
Two other DNA samples were also collected at the suspect’s residence
A woman surnamed Chang was reported missing on Jan
17 and with the suspect in Cianjhen District (前鎮) later that day
The woman had been seen entering the residence of the suspect and had not been seen since
The police also investigated the suspect’s acquaintances and family
and found that the suspect’s sister-in-law had also been reported missing on Dec
Chao’s remains have been recovered from the river
but the bodies of the other two victims have yet to be found
The suspect has a criminal record of rape committed when he was still serving in the military
adding that he was sentenced to life imprisonment
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) yesterday said that the alleged murderer’s acts were inhuman
urging the police department to solve the case as soon as possible
March 25 (CNA) South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun
known for his role in TV series "My Love from the Star," has canceled his visit to Kaohsiung
amid controversy surrounding the death of his ex-girlfriend
The announcement was made by President Chain Store Corp.
the organizer of the three-day Sakura Festival
stating that Kim Soo-hyun would not be attending "due to a change in his schedule."
except for Kim's scheduled appearance at the end of the night
Those who purchased tickets for that day can ask for a full refund from 10 a.m
The 37-year-old actor's canceled visit to the port city comes amid mounting backlash following the death of Kim Sae-ron
a former child star who took her own life on Feb
16 -- the same day as Kim Soo-hyun's birthday
According to media reports from South Korea
Kim Sae-ron's parents claimed that Kim Soo-hyun
who is about 12 years older than their daughter
had been in a six-year relationship with her
They presented photos and letters as evidence to support their claims
Kim Sae-ron later signed with Gold Medalist
an agency founded in 2019 that also represents Kim Soo-hyun
her parents allege that the agency mishandled their daughter's affairs following a drunk driving incident in 2022
They claimed that the company sought 700 million KRW (US$477,067) in compensation from her to cover money it had loaned her to pay fines and breach-of-contract penalties
A close friend of Kim Sae-ron's mother was cited as saying that Kim Soo-hyun worked with the agency to demand repayment from the actress
Her parents further alleged that the financial pressure placed on their daughter may have contributed to her death
Kim Soo-hyun's Instagram account lost 200,000 followers overnight and around 1 million to date
Gold Medalist confirmed the two had been in a relationship but emphasized that they only began dating when Kim Sae-ron was an adult
Other than "My Love from the Star," Kim Soo-hyun is also known for "Moon Embracing the Sun" and "Queen of Tears."
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC
台積電) yesterday said it is to invest a total of NT$1.5 trillion (US$45.2 billion) to expand its advanced 2-nanometer chip capacity in Kaohsiung
bolstering its commitment to augment investment and technology development at home
The world’s biggest contract chipmaker unveiled the massive domestic investment after boosting its investment in the US by US$100 billion at the beginning of last month
fanning fears that Taiwan risks losing its competitive edge as TSMC plans to produce more advanced chips
and set up a research and development center in the US for the first time
TSMC yesterday held a capacity expansion ceremony at the construction site of its 2-nanometer fab
The fab is to house five chip manufacturing facilities
with the first one set to enter volume production in the second half of this year
“Today’s 2-nanometer capacity expansion ceremony holds significant importance for global semiconductor technology development
marking the successful progress of TSMC’s world-leading 2-nanometer process
It showcases TSMC’s commitment to meeting strong market demand
continuously expanding capacity to support customers,” TSMC co-chief operating officer Y.P
Phase 4 and Phase 5 wafer fabrication plants
All of them will germinate here,” Chyn said
The chipmaker said it is currently installing equipment at the first phase of Fab 22 and has completed structural engineering works at Phase 2
Executive Yuan Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) and Minister of Economic Affairs J.W
Fab 22 would create more than 7,000 direct high-tech positions and 20,000 construction jobs
TSMC generates about NT$3 trillion in production value a year and 500,000 jobs through its supply chain partners and related services
TSMC has also been holding intensive discussions with the authorities to acquire more land to build new chipmaking facilities
The company said its 2-nanometer process technology is expected to be widely applied in customers’ next-generation leading technology products
mobile devices and cloud-based data centers
TSMC estimated that 2-nanometer technology would create end products with a market value of US$2 trillion within five years of volume production
TSMC also has a 2-nanometer chip fab in Hsinchu
TSMC said almost all technology innovators in the world are closely collaborating with it to adopt 2-nanometer technology
given its 10 to 15 percent speed improvement and 25 to 30 percent lower power consumption compared with 3-nanometer technology
7 (CNA) The Kaohsiung District Court on Friday approved the detention of a 73-year-old man over the murder and dismemberment of a 71-year-old woman believed to be part of a killing spree
was arrested Wednesday evening in connection with the death of a woman surnamed Chao (趙)
Crime scene investigators collected evidence inside Chang's Kaohsiung residence
which led forensic experts to discover two other blood samples on top of Chao's
After cross-referencing missing persons reports
Kaohsiung authorities said they believed that Chang may have killed at least two other women alongside Chao between December last year and this month

Taipei, April 26 (CNA) An infant daycare center in Kaohsiung has been ordered to cease operations for allegedly mistreating children under its care, the city's Social Affairs Bureau said on Friday.
At least eight children, aged between 2 months and 2 years old, were found to have been abused from Feb. 10-12 at Bei Yujia Infant Daycare Center in Nanzih District, the bureau's deputy director-general Yeh Yu-ju (葉玉如) said at a news conference.
Based on evidence collected from the center's surveillance cameras, the children were subjected to improper feeding and other mistreatment, Yeh said.
The incident involved three people, including a married couple identified by their last names Chu (朱) and Yang (楊), and a former employee surnamed Tung (董) who recently resigned from Bei Yujia.
The daycare center is registered under Chu's name but actually run by Yang, who has been banned from operating or working in a childcare organization for five years due to a prior child abuse record in her previous role as a nanny in 2020, Kaohsiung City Councilor Lee Ya-hui (李雅慧) said at the event.
The daycare center was shut down but then reopened at the same location last year under her husband's name, Lee explained, suggesting that the government reevaluate its review system for childcare organizations.
Yeh said the bureau noticed that the business had re-registered to open at the same location but approved the application because it conformed to regulations as it was under Chu's name.
According to the bureau, Yang and Tung were fined NT$480,000 (US$14,745) and NT$60,000, respectively, for contraventions of the Protection of Children and Youths Welfare and Rights Act.
In addition to the NT$480,000 fine, Yang was banned from operating or working in a childcare organization for 30 years, Yeh said, adding that the bureau is currently working to assist families transfer their children to other daycare centers, adding that four parents have already filed lawsuits against the center.
The Ciaotou District Prosecutors Office in Kaohsiung has been investigating the case since mid-March after incidences of alleged child abuse were reported by the city's Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Center.
Raids were carried out on Bei Yujia with Chu, Yang and Tung brought in for questioning by police in early April, prosecutors said.
The couple were later released on bail of NT$40,000 each while Tung was also let go after posting bail of NT$10,000, they added, indicating that the investigation is still ongoing.

The younger brother of the lead suspect in a triple homicide and dismemberment case in Kaohsiung is a wanted fugitive facing a 17-year prison sentence for selling heroin, a police source said.
The 73-year-old Chang Chieh-tsung (張介宗) at whose residence DNA evidence was found last week, remains the lead suspect in the murder case.
Police said they initially suspected that his younger brother, 71-year-old Chang Wen-tsung (張文宗), was involved, but it has since been ruled out.
Investigators discovered that the younger brother has been wanted by authorities since 2023 after being convicted of selling Schedule I drugs.
The younger brother was initially sentenced to eight years and two months in prison, with a second hearing extending the sentence to 15 years and 10 months.
Combined with a remaining sentence from a previous parole case for a drug-related offense in 2011, this leaves the younger Chang facing a 17-year prison sentence.
He fled before he was able to serve the sentence.
Although the younger brother is registered as living with his brother in Kaohsiung’s Cianjhen District (前鎮), police suspect he has not been living at the residence, as it is less than 100m from Fuxing Police Station.
The task force investigating the case now believes that the likelihood of Chang Wen-tsung being the triple-homicide killer is low, although they are continuing to search for him in relation to the case.
However, investigators are reportedly looking into the possibility that Chang Chieh-tsung may have murdered his younger brother, as property disputes are suspected to be the motive for killing his sister-in-law.
The criminal history of the suspect’s younger brother has drawn widespread speculation.
The Kaohsiung Police Department said in a statement that they are searching for him, and in the meantime, there is no list of “10 victims” as speculated.
The department also warned the public against spreading rumors and inciting panic.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, plans to begin construction of its fourth and fifth wafer fabs in Kaohsiung next year, targeting the development of high-end processes.
The two facilities — P4 and P5 — are part of TSMC’s production expansion program, which aims to build five fabs in Kaohsiung.
TSMC facility division vice president Arthur Chuang (莊子壽) on Thursday said that the five facilities are expected to create 8,000 jobs.
To respond to the fast-changing global semiconductor industry and escalating international competition, TSMC said it has to keep growing by expanding its production footprints.
The P4 and P5 fabs would be located next to the third fab, P3, and their construction is scheduled to be completed in 2027.
TSMC completely abides by the law and the construction plan is proceeding as scheduled, Chuang said, speaking with residents of Kaohsiung who are concerned about the environmental impact of the fab construction.
TSCM said its first fab in Kaohsiung, P1, which has started equipment installation, is scheduled to start mass commercial production of the advanced 2-nanometer process next year. The 2-nanometer process would become TSMC’s latest technology to begin mass production after launching commercial production of the 3-nanometer process at the end of 2022.
The 2-nanometer process would be 10 percent to 15 percent faster than N3E, an enhanced version of the 3-nanometer process, and consume less power. Densities would also be higher by more than 15 percent.
Construction of the second fab, P2, is set to be completed next year. It would also use the 2-nanometer process, while construction of the third fab is expected to be completed in 2026. That fab is to use the 2-nanometer process or more sophisticated technologies.
TSMC did not disclose what process the 4th and 5th fabs would use.
At an investor conference in mid-October, TSMC chairman C.C. Wei (魏哲家) said the company’s clients appeared more interested in its 2-nanometer process than the 3-nanometer process, so the company is preparing more 2-nanometer production capacity to meet demand.
TSMC already has a 2nm wafer plant in Baoshan in Hsinchu County, where a trial run has begun. Mass production at that facility is expected to begin next year.
The chipmaker is also developing A16 process mass production, which is scheduled for the first half of 2026. The company describes it as a next-generation nanosheet-based technology featuring Super Power Rail, “an innovative, best-in-class backside power delivery solution” that “improves logic density and performance by dedicating front-side routing resource to signals.”
TSMC is scheduled to host an investor conference on Jan. 16, which will be closely watched for its market outlook and the potential impact of US tariff policies, Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER, 台灣經濟研究院) researcher Arisa Liu (劉佩真) said.
Taiwan's semiconductor industry is likely to exceed NT$6 trillion (US$186 billion) in output by the end of next year, growing 16.5 percent year-on-year, with TSMC anticipated to outpace the average with a 20 percent increase, Liu said.
She said that artificial intelligence (AI) will continue to drive the growth of the semiconductor sector, with TSMC being the leading foundry for AI chips and benefiting significantly from rising demand.
Liu noted that TSMC's growth will be fueled by orders for NVIDIA's B200 and B300 chips, as well as demand for application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) and AI processors for smartphones and computers.
In addition, the rising demand for 3nm and 5nm chips in AI applications will be key factors propelling TSMC's expansion in the coming year, Liu said.
Market focus is also on the potential impact of tariff policies proposed by US president-elect Donald Trump, who is set to take office on Jan. 20, she said.
Liu pointed out that TSMC may not face direct tariffs, as its chips are not directly exported to the US, but instead sent to system assembly manufacturers.
However, any increase in import duties on US-bound goods could raise prices, potentially affecting both the US and global economies, with indirect impacts on TSMC, she said.
Kaohsiung, April 20 (CNA) Hsu Shang-hsien (徐尚賢), the leader of a recall vote campaign organization targeting two ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers in Kaohsiung, has been formally detained in the southern Taiwanese city following questioning over alleged forgery and violations of the Personal Data Protection Act.
The Kaohsiung District Court on Saturday approved local prosecutors' request to detain Hsu and hold him incommunicado for two months. The court cited concerns that he could tamper with evidence or collude with other individuals involved in the case.
According to court documents released on Sunday, Hsu admitted that many of the signatures on his organization's recall petition documents were not provided by actual supporters, but were written by himself or campaign volunteers.
Although Hsu denied illegally collecting personal data or forging documents, the court said digital evidence on two confiscated phones and witness testimony pointed to "suspected serious illegality."
The Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office alleged that Hsu deleted files and chat records related to the recall vote campaign and advised others, including a man named Chu Lei (朱磊) and a woman identified by her surname Huang (黃), on how to respond to judicial inquiries.
Huang was released without bail after being questioned on Friday and Chu was released on bail of NT$150,000 early Saturday, prosecutors said.
The court said the facts of the case remain unclear and that the risk of collusion with others who have not yet been questioned justified Hsu's pre-trial detention.
Hsu ran the campaign organization "Double Strike Petition Headquarters" (雙罷劫連署總站) that coordinated signature collections for campaigns against DPP lawmakers Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑) and Huang Jie (黃捷), both of whom represent electoral districts in Kaohsiung in Taiwan's national legislature.
The case is one of several ongoing investigations into alleged illegality in recall vote campaigns targeting DPP lawmakers that have led opposition politicians to accuse the ruling party of using the judiciary to "persecute" its political opponents.
The main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) protested outside the Taipei prosecutors' office this week and is urging Taiwanese people to assemble in front of the Presidential Office on Saturday.
The DPP has rejected the allegation and accused the KMT of threatening Taiwan's social stability and democracy.
Last week, separate investigations by prosecutors in Taipei and New Taipei resulted in raids and multiple arrests of activists associated with alleged signature forgeries and violations of data protection laws in recall campaigns against DPP lawmakers.
According to the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, a public vote is triggered if campaigners collect signatures from 1 percent of district voters in the first round and 10 percent in the second.
A fourth set of DNA has been identified at a murder suspect's house, leading police to suspect the man has harmed three women, Kaohsiung Police Department Chief Lin Yen-tian (林炎田) said today.
The third possible victim has been identified through DNA as the suspect’s sister-in-law who was reported missing on Dec. 15, he said.
It has also been confirmed that the DNA of a second possible victim, a missing 75-year-old Zuoying woman surnamed Chang (張), was found at the scene, he said, adding that all three sets of DNA were found in blood stains in the same room.
Media have reported that the suspect’s home in Cianjhen District (前鎮) was originally owned by his older brother, who died in May last year, leaving the suspect’s sister-in-law to move to a residence in Nanzih District (楠梓).
Huang’s son worked in New Taipei City and filed a missing person's report last year after being unable to contact his mother for some time.
As no trace of her has been found since, it is not being ruled out that she is also a victim in a homicide case, police said.
Police fear a second missing woman is connected to a Kaohsiung homicide case in which a 73-year-old man was detained on Wednesday for the alleged murder and dismemberment of a 71-year-old woman.
Traces of blood belonging to a third person have been found at the suspect’s home in Kaohsiung's Cianjhen District (前鎮), police said, leading them to suspect a second victim was harmed at the residence.
A 75-year-old woman from Kaohsiung’s Zuoying District (左營), surnamed Chang (張), was last seen three weeks ago on security cameras at Sanmin Park in Kaohsiung’s Sanmin District (三民), having previously been spotted just 300m from the suspect’s residence.
Police have obtained a DNA sample from the missing woman’s daughter and are awaiting results to determine if the sample matches the blood found at the crime scene.
Police said yesterday that a 71-year-old woman, surnamed Lin (林), from Kaohsiung’s Nanzih District (楠梓) went missing on Sunday.
She was last seen that afternoon on surveillance footage riding her scooter with her 73-year-old boyfriend, also surnamed Chang (張), to his residence.
The woman’s family placed a missing person's report on Monday, which was upgraded to an emergency search on Tuesday.
Police discovered that the elderly man had made 12 trips outside his home between 6am and 10am on Monday morning, on five occasions carrying black garbage bags to a canal in Cianjhen.
Multiple body parts were recovered in the canal, while traces of Chao’s blood were found in the suspect’s home, leading police to apprehend him on Wednesday night on suspicion of murder.
The suspect was transferred to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office last night, and the Kaohsiung District Court this afternoon approved prosecutors’ request to formally detain him on suspicion of murder.
The second possible victim was first reported missing to Zuoying Precinct on Jan. 27 when her son returned from working abroad for the Lunar New Year, but had not heard from his mother in 10 days, the precinct said this morning.
The woman was last seen on Jan. 14 when her daughter dropped her off at her home on Fumin Road in Zuoying District.
After she did not return over the Lunar New Year, the family made another report on Jan. 31, escalating the search to an emergency missing person's case and leading investigators to review surveillance footage to track her movements.
Investigators found that the woman was last seen on security footage at about 1pm on Jan. 17 taking the MRT to Sanmin Park, where her daughter told police she often gathered with friends.
However, footage from Cianjhen District reportedly revealed she had previously been spotted just 300m from the suspect’s home.
Police are continuing to review surveillance footage and confirm timelines as they await the results of DNA analysis, while a special task force has been assembled at the Zuoying Precinct with the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office overseeing the investigation.

Investigators in a Kaohsiung serial murder and dismemberment case confirmed yesterday that tissue from the head of a suspected third victim has been discovered at the Port of Kaohsiung.
Yan Chih-hao (鄢志豪), commander of the Kaohsiung City Police Department Criminal Investigation Corps, told the press that forensic results from the tissue matched the DNA of a woman surnamed Huang (黃), the sister-in-law of the suspect surnamed Chang (張).
The tissue was found at No. 26 pier at the port Wednesday, which was then reported and sent for forensic analysis, Yan said.
Rigorous and meticulous reviews of surveillance footage, forensic science and digital traces have been collected as evidence to make an ironclad case against the suspect, Yan said.
Chang will be questioned by prosecutors to clarify issues relating to the case, he added.
The investigation started as a missing persons case when the family of a woman surnamed Chao (趙) reported her missing on Feb. 3.
The police targeted Chang after reviewing surveillance footage, showing Chao gave the suspect a ride on her scooter to his residence at around 6pm on Feb. 2, where she was last seen.
Blood traces belonging to two other missing women were later found in Chang's residence, with forensics reports confirming their identities, one of whom was Huang.

Several pieces of severed human remains in a Kaohsiung river and nearby docks have been identified as belonging to missing women believed to have been killed and dismembered by a 73-year-old man
The man surnamed Chang (張) was taken back to his residence in Cianjhen District (前鎮) today to answer questions after blood samples collected at his home last week matched DNA samples provided by family members of three previously reported missing women
The human remains uncovered since Thursday last week have been identified as those of a 71-year-old woman surnamed Chao (趙) and a 75-year-old woman surnamed Chang (張) of no relation
Kaohsiung Police Department Commissioner Lin Yen-tien (林炎田) told reporters yesterday
The third blood sample was found to be the suspect's 75-year-old sister-in-law
Chao's family reported the woman as missing on Monday last week
Cameras also showed Chang leaving his residence 12 times between 6am and 10am on Monday last week
Police questioned Chang on Tuesday and arrested him the following day in connection with the death of Chao (趙)
Forensics later found blood samples collected in his residence that matched the missing women
The local district court granted on Friday prosecutors' motion to detain the suspect
the city's Criminal Investigation Corps said today that a small piece of suspected human remains had been found and sent to the department's Forensic Science Center
27 (CNA) Investigators in a Kaohsiung serial murder and dismemberment case confirmed on Thursday that tissue from the head of a suspected third victim has been discovered at the Port of Kaohsiung
commander of the Kaohsiung City Police Department Criminal Investigation Corps
told the press that forensic results from the tissue matched the DNA of a woman surnamed Huang (黃)
the sister-in-law of the suspect surnamed Chang (張)
which was then reported and sent for forensic analysis
Rigorous and meticulous reviews of surveillance footage
forensic science and digital traces have been collected as evidence and present an irondcald case against the suspect
Chang will be questioned by prosecutors to clarify issues relating to the case
The investigation started as a missing persons case when the family of a woman surnamed Chao (趙) reported her missing on Feb
The police targeted Chang after reviewing surveillance footage
showing Chao gave the suspect a ride on her scooter to his residence at around 6 p.m
Blood traces belonging to two other missing women were later found in Chang's residence

TIPC focuses on Taiwan’s port business operations as well as the integration of various domestic and international commercial port resources
Revisions to the Regulations Governing the Anchorage of Vessels in Kaohsiung International Commercial Port announced in 2024 and the January 1st (2025) implementation of a new Anchorage Fee Schedule have both been made to improve and strengthen the management of vessels anchoring in designated anchorage areas within the Port of Kaohsiung
The rules now more comprehensively address the fees associated with special circumstances such as multiple anchorages
and vessels with seaworthiness concerns during anchorage period as well as enact measures to further enhance related safety and efficiencies within Port of Kaohsiung’s designated anchorage areas
The primary objective of Port of Kaohsiung’s 2024 revisions to the abovementioned anchorage regulations is to reduce the incidence of long-duration anchorages by limiting the anchorage period for vessels to a maximum of 7 days per stay and requiring vessels in need of additional time in port to heave anchor and submit a new request to anchor
These revisions are also designed to further improve vessel safety in anchorage areas by enhancing vigilance for vessels with structural / performance issues as well as optimizing the availability and fair allocation of anchorage area resources
rules for temporary anchorage have also been added
with vessels seeking emergency anchorage now required to submit a special application
and all anchored vessels required to keep a listening watch on the assigned VHF channel with the VTS and provide vessel status information upon request
To ensure fair access to and strengthen safety within Port of Kaohsiung anchorage areas
Port of Kaohsiung is now assessing an additional demurrage charge on vessels that do not enter the port but extend their anchorage beyond the 7-day maximum and a markup charge on vessels that apply to anchor again within 72 hours of heaving anchor
in the interests of ensuring safe operations in anchorage areas
in addition to establishing temporary anchoring positions and related control measures
vessels applying for permission to anchor within the designated anchorage area for repairs will have their anchorage fees for the first 3 hours waived
after which fees will be calculated at a rate equal to twice the standard anchorage assessment
The aforementioned changes all became effective on January 1st
Port of Kaohsiung appreciates the support and cooperation of its shipping company and shipping agent customers with regard to these revised measures and regulations
The port will continue discussing and working closely with related agencies to further refine and streamline the implementation of these measures to effectively monitor and manage the status of anchored vessels and maintain the highest levels of anchorage-area and navigational safety within port waters

China's military held "shooting training" today off Taiwan's southwest coast
calling the move provocative and dangerous
the military detected 32 Chinese military aircraft carrying out a "joint combat readiness drill" with Chinese warships in the Taiwan Strait area
"During this period it even blatantly violated international practice by setting up a drills area in waters about 40 nautical miles (74km) off the coast ..
claiming that it would carry out 'shooting training,'" it added
The southwestern population centers of Kaohsiung and Pingtung County that figured in the ministry's statement are both home to important naval and air bases
The exercises endanger the safety of international flights and shipping
and is a "blatant provocation" to regional peace and stability
adding that it had dispatched its own forces to keep watch
China's other recent military activity in the region

There was no immediate confirmation from China that it was carrying out new drills around Taiwan and its defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment
China's official Xinhua news agency said the Chinese Communist Party's fourth ranked leader
had called this week for greater effort in the cause of Chinese reunification
China must "firmly grasp the right to dominate and take the initiative in cross-strait relations
and unswervingly push forward the cause of reunification of the motherland," it quoted Wang as telling an annual meeting on work related to Taiwan
April 21 (CNA) The Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp
(KRTC) has invited a Japanese rice ball (onigiri) vendor and his Taiwanese wife to open a stall in one of the city's metro stations after a video of their landlord smashing items outside their store earned them widespread sympathy
KRTC said it contacted the couple and offered to take them to Zuoying
Kaohsiung Main and Formosa Boulevard stations on Monday to evaluate potential sites for a stall
in what the company described as a gesture of "friendship and support between Taiwan and Japan."

with crowds lining up to purchase rice balls and messages of encouragement flooding in on social media
Chang said they are still searching for a new business location and are currently handling court proceedings related to the dispute
which she said had caused them emotional stress and business disruption
According to the Kaohsiung City Police Department
the altercation involved the 62-year-old tenant Chang and the 59-year-old landlord surnamed Shao (邵)
who accused the shopkeeper of placing items in unauthorized areas and filed a theft-related complaint
The police said the couple later filed a countersuit for property damage and a minor injury said to have occurred when the landlord kicked a chair that struck Higuchi
Shao is suspected of having been emotionally agitated
Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker Huang Jie (黃捷) visited the store to show her support
writing later on Facebook that the shop represented the "sincerity of Taiwan-Japan friendship."
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a guilty verdict and prison sentence of ten years and five months for former Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Kaohsiung City Councilor Chen Tsui-luan (陳粹鑾) for embezzling public funds
Chen falsified a list of assistants and claimed NT$4.49 million (US$138,000) in fraudulent fees in nine years
then falsely filed NT$30,000 in travel expenses using receipts from the travel agency
She was sentenced to three years and eight months for forgery and corruption
She was released from prison in August 2020 on parole
Cheng became the youngest member of the Kaohsiung City Council in KMT history after running in her mother’s place in 2018
to take advantage of Cheng An-li’s city councilor position
Wang and Cheng Chia-hong falsified lists of aides
including using the names of relatives and associates
to claim public assistant subsidies from the council
the Kaohsiung District Court found that across her terms in office as well as her daughter’s term
Chen defrauded the city of NT$1.14 million
The court sentenced Chen to 10 years and five months in prison
Wang to two years and six months and Cheng Chia-hong to one year and four months
the Kaohsiung High Court upheld the sentence for Chen but commuted Cheng Chia-hong’s sentence to four years of probation
while Wang withdrew the appeal before the verdict
Chen and her son appealed again to the Supreme Court
which did not find a reason for further appeal

A Kaohsiung man was charged last week for falsely reporting that he had been robbed to hitch a ride across town in a police car
According to an indictment by the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office
the incident occurred at about 11pm on Feb
when a man surnamed Lai (賴) wanted to get to the city’s Siaogang District (小港)
calling a police station and falsely reporting that his wallet had been stolen by two people on a white motorcycle
to have police officers pick him up and drive him to the station to process the report
Photo courtesy of the National Police Agency
upon reviewing surveillance camera footage of the area
police found no evidence that Lai had been robbed
and he later admitted that he had been lying
which caused him to mistakenly believe he had been robbed
Lai ultimately admitted upon further questioning that he had made the false report to get a free ride across town
prosecutors indicted Lai last week for making a false accusation under the Criminal Code and requested a summary judgement from a court
Prosecutors did not indicate what punishment they were seeking for the man
The Port of Long Beach in California and the Port of Majuro in the Marshall Islands yesterday became the Port of Kaohsiung’s newest sister ports after the three signed agreements during the Association of Pacific Ports (APP) annual conference in the city
The ports in Long Beach and Majuro are the Port of Kaohsiung’s 19th and 20th sister ports respectively
the Taiwan International Ports Corp (TIPC) said
The port authority has signed similar agreements with 18 international ports in 13 countries: the UK
TIPC chairman Lee Hsien-yi (李賢義) said that he looks forward to communicating and growing with the two sister ports in port construction and operation
The Port of Kaohsiung had hosted the APP annual conference in 2015
which was attended by 18 guests from eight ports in six countries
the seaport company hosted the annual conference again
which was attended by 72 representatives from 30 ports in nine countries
“This demonstrates Taiwan’s soft power in promoting port diplomacy
which was jointly promoted by the port company and other government agencies,” Lee said
The Port of Long Beach is a major port for trade between the US and Asia
with Taiwan ranking as the port’s second-largest export trading partner
The Port of Long Beach has six container centers and 72 cranes
with an annual container handling capacity of more than 9 million twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs)
“The port authority there has long been committed to environmental sustainability
promoting biodiversity and setting a goal for net zero emissions
It has also taken the lead in moving towards a world-class ‘green port’ by slowing down ships with environmental protection flags
improving air quality and having shore power systems available at all container terminals,” the company said in a statement
which consists of 33 large and small atoll islands
