The plan is to build a gigafab that can accommodate six 300mm production lines
the publication said without naming its sources
It quoted TSMC neither confirming nor denying the decision but saying that there are many considerations in choosing the location of the plant
“The company uses Taiwan as its main base and does not rule out any possibility,” the articles quoted the company saying
UDN said that TSMC has proposed to the Science Park authority that it will establish a 1.4nm and 1nm site in Shalun
Another fab at Zhongke is taking the lead in developing the 1.4nm manufacturing process which will be transferred into the P1
The plan is still fluid and it could be that P1 through P3 will be used for 1nm and P4 through P6 for a 0.7nm manufacturing process
No timetable was given for the construction of Fab25
UDN said that plan would be demonstrating TSMC’s determination to remain based in Taiwan and develop its leading-edge processes there
It has gone through a spate of investment in the US
Japan and Germany but generally appears intent on transfering manufacturing processes from behind the leading-edge into these fabs

the island's oldest city is celebrating its quartercentennial by highlighting its multicultural past
They called the place where they settled Tayouan – or Taiwan
The Dutch traded with the local Siraya people who spoke an Austronesian language more closely related to contemporary Malay
Tagalog and Māori than modern-day Mandarin
Some scholars argue that the word "Taiwan" itself has Indigenous roots – deriving from "tavo-an," meaning "meeting-place" in Siraya
are dedicated to exploring Tainan's many stories
exhibitions and public celebrations are highlighting how the city has evolved as a melting pot of different cultures
Today, the best way to experience Tainan is simply to wander its narrow streets and soak in its cultural diversity. Tainan is proud of its reputation as the birthplace of Taiwan and the cradle of Taiwanese culture
and it has managed to hold onto its roots more so than other Taiwanese cities
Compared to the capital Taipei or Tainan's nearest neighbour Kaohsiung – with their soaring skyscrapers that seem to reach into the future – Tainan feels like a place where the past and present collide
New high-rises compete for space with ancient monuments and tangled back alleys lined with centuries-old buildings
the streets are noisy with the sounds of firecrackers and temple processions: the city has more Buddhist and Taoist temples than anywhere else in Taiwan
Fort Zeelandia still stands in Tainan's Anping district. Tourists wander around the sprawling ruins where modern Taiwan was born, snapping photos of the old brick walls entwined with mammoth banyan roots. Next door, the Kaitai Tianhou temple is dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu
the temple is the oldest shrine to the island's most popular deity
visitors continue the old-fashioned tradition of throwing pue
and asking the goddess for advice about their business dealings
fried sweet potato balls and Tainan's local delicacy kuann-tshâ-pang or "coffin bread" (fried bread stuffed with seafood sauce) speak to the city's reputation as Taiwan's street food capital
elderly residents sit on plastic chairs in the shade chatting in Taiwanese
a dialect derived from the original Hokkien spoken by settlers who arrived from Fujian in China that has largely disappeared elsewhere on the island in favour of Mandarin
setting in motion waves of migration from China
This first wave of Chinese settlers was mainly made up of Hokkien-speakers from Fujian
when Taiwan passed into the hands of the Qing dynasty and Tainan became the capital of the new Taiwan Prefecture
including a substantial Hakka-speaking community
The island remained under Qing control for two centuries until it was ceded to the Japanese in 1895
The Japanese stayed until the end of World War Two
and Japanese became the island's lingua franca
there are some elderly people who are still more comfortable speaking Japanese than Mandarin
• Taiwan's little-known original inhabitants
• Can Taiwan become Asia's next great hiking destination?
• The 96-year-old painter who saved a village
the Nationalists imposed martial law and proclaimed Mandarin as the national language
even though hardly anyone in Taiwan spoke it
the Nationalists did their best to transform the culturally and linguistically diverse people of Taiwan into a Chinese-identifying
To understand how Tainan is rediscovering this cultural diversity, I visited the Confucius temple in Tainan's city centre to talk to the head of the temple's cultural foundation
As we sat in the airy hall with its burgundy walls and swooping eaves
Tsio̍h explained how Taiwanese culture was built from successive waves of colonialism
Constructed using building techniques borrowed from the Dutch
it was rebuilt and restored by the Japanese
It is a complete record of Taiwan's colonial history."
Tsio̍h is committed to the revival of the Taiwanese language
"I think we need a strong and clear expression of being Taiwanese," he said
"Language is a token of self-expression
Taiwanese society is heading toward a vision of a linguistically equal society
We want our society to be able to see these languages as equals."
But there are challenges, too. During Taiwan's decades of martial law, Mandarin was the standard language on the island. And while Taiwanese is now being taught again in schools across Taiwan, few young people speak it fluently. One person working to reverse this trend is YouTuber and Anping native Chiu Ka-éng, who goes by the name of Ayo. Ayo's YouTube channel
Tâi-lâm muē-á kàu lí kóng Tâi-gí (A Tainan Girl Teaches You Taiwanese)
"There are over 7,000 languages in the world
but they are gradually disappearing," Ayo told me over Zoom
"I wonder if my mother tongue will vanish in my lifetime
The connection between language and place is very close
this makes the Tainan 400 celebrations an opportunity "to imagine together how this place came to be"
"what kind of future we want for the next 100 or 400 years"
another language revival is underway in Tainan: Siraya
the couple came across Gravius's translation of Matthew's Gospel
they have dedicated themselves to the revival of Siraya as a living language
When I met the couple in a coffee shop in the suburb of Xinhua
they brought along a pile of newly published Siraya textbooks and we discussed how
Siraya is now being spoken again and taught in more than 20 schools across Tainan
This revival is also a reminder of the deeper history of Taiwan
"The buildings may be 400 years old," Talavan said
our life… I always say it's 400-plus."
I asked Talavan what her hopes are for the language's revival
"we want Siraya to be used from kindergarten through to university." I told her I have started to learn the language
"Maybe you can become a Siraya teacher too," she said
To spend time in Tainan at 400 (or "400-plus")
is to become aware that Taiwan is a place with multiple roots – a complex tapestry of languages and cultures
And this year's celebrations are a reminder that identity doesn't need to be simple
and that there is strength and richness in complexity
As Tsio̍h told me before I climbed on my bike to cycle home from the Confucius temple: "We Taiwanese are not that pure
We should be proud of that and start telling people this history and these stories of hybridity
Then maybe we can find peace with ourselves."

Tainan is cooperating with the central government to hold the nation’s first civil defense resilience exercises on Thursday next week to test the nation’s emergency response capabilities
President William Lai (賴清德) and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) are expected to travel to Tainan to oversee the exercises
The exercises are to take place from 9am to 2pm at Tainan Municipal Nan-Ning Senior High School

Photo courtesy of the Tainan City Government
This initiative was launched by the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee
which was established by the Presidential Office in June last year to enhance preparedness for large-scale disasters and the threats posed by authoritarian expansion
The drills would simulate disasters such as earthquakes
tsunamis or damage to critical infrastructure
testing the effectiveness of on-site disaster responses
The exercises are a collaboration between central and local governments
The goal is to strengthen national defense
disaster prevention and democratic resilience
The committee conducted a tabletop exercise with relevant central government agencies and the Tainan City Government on Dec
Tainan Deputy Mayor Yeh Tse-shan (葉澤山) said
It was decided then that Tainan would hold the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Field Exercises on Thursday next week
Tainan is to host the third meeting of the committee and a follow-up news conference
embodying Lai’s vision of an “action-oriented committee,” he said
The exercises would verify disaster response capabilities through small-scale
Tainan City Government Secretary-General Fang Chin-cheng (方進呈) said
They would test the ability of central and local governments to conduct large-scale evacuations
April 24 (CNA) An autopsy conducted on a 13-year-old boy who died in February amid allegations of school bullying found no signs that he was poisoned
concluding instead that he died from complications related to a viral infection
the Tainan District Prosecutors Office said an autopsy and toxicology report by the Ministry of Justice's Institute of Forensic Medicine found no traces of drugs or toxins in samples of the boy's hair
The boy's cause of death was determined to be myocarditis
The autopsy results were presented to the boy's family
adding that it would put its "full efforts" into probing whether any illegal activities took place
the Tainan Bureau of Education said in a separate statement Thursday evening that an outside investigation into the case found no evidence that the boy had been bullied
which was conducted by a committee of special education teachers
psychologists and lawyers and based on relevant evidence and witness interviews
was completed on April 8 and distributed to students' parents on April 14
after the boy's mother posted on Facebook that her son
a seventh-grader at Houbi Junior High School surnamed Lin (林)
She said a subsequent blood test conducted by a hospital had found "signs of poisoning from a toxic substance."
The mother also claimed that some students had said her son was bullied for a long time and even taken to the restroom by other classmates who allegedly force-fed him drug-laced coffee powder
In a separate social media post the same day
the school's principal said the student had not attended school since Feb
and that he only later learned from the boy's parents that he had died at the hospital
the Education Bureau said that with permission from their parents
all 164 students at the school were tested for drugs on March 10
and that the results had all come back negative

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck off Tainan at 11:47am today
the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said
The hypocenter was 32.3km northeast of Tainan City Hall at a depth of 7.3km
which gauges the actual effect of a seismic event
measured 4 in Tainan and Chiayi County on Taiwan's seven-tier intensity scale

The quake had an intensity of 3 in Chiayi City and County
There were no immediate reports of damage following the quake
March 24 (CNA) Around 900 civilians will practice using military field hospital equipment without the assistance of armed forces personnel during a civil defense drill in Tainan on Thursday
the official told CNA Monday that though the drill is to be staged in Tainan
fire departments in nearby Kaohsiung and Chiayi and alternative service conscripts will also join
Presidential Office spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) announced that the small-scale exercise would simulate a severe "compound disasters" scenario involving earthquakes
tsunamis and critical infrastructure disruptions
Kuo said the drills would test central and local governments' emergency response capabilities
and establishing emergency medical facilities
The exercise will also feature civilian participation to test public-private sector cooperation in the event of major disaster thus enhancing whole-of-society defense resilience
Although military personnel will not take part
the Ministry of National Defense's Medical Affairs Bureau will lend its newly purchased Forward Resuscitative and Surgical Detachment (FRSD) medical sets and inflatable field hospital tents for use in Thursday's drill
FRSD is a set of medical supplies and equipment that provides the necessary medical materiel to establish a rapidly deployable urgent initial surgical service
The weatherproofed inflatable field hospital tents are quick and easy to set up and light for transportation and are used to treat patients in the aftermath of natural disasters and in war zones
Another unnamed senior Ministry of Interior official told CNA Monday that unlike previous rounds of civil defense or Wan An air raid drills Taiwan organized before
Thursday's drill will be "unscripted and more realistic."
The official added that following the Tainan drill
the government would proceed with Urban Resilience Exercises from April to July
which combine the Wan An air raid drills and Min An disaster response drills
The series of exercises will culminate in the military's annual Han Kuang drills' live-fire portion in July
Thursday's exercise is to take place from 10 a.m
at Tainan Municipal Nan-Ning Senior High School
Anping Port Visitors' Center and the square across from the Tainan Yuping Post Office
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) will travel to Tainan to preside over the exercises
Such efforts were launched under the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee

March 24 (CNA) Several workers at an electroplating factory in Tainan were sent to local hospitals Monday afternoon after inhaling chlorine gas
First responders arrived at the factory in Anding District and found 11 individuals who were suffering from inhalation injuries after the Tainan City Fire Bureau received a report of an accident at 2:15 p.m.
Many of the victims complained of chest pain and irritated eyes
and were sent to local hospitals to be checked
a man surnamed Lin (林) who fainted after the chlorine gas was released
showed no vital signs by the time he arrived at the hospital and was later pronounced dead
four of the remaining 10 individuals with more serious injuries were being kept in Chi Mei Medical Center's emergency ward for observation and were all conscious
The six others were treated mostly for inhalation burns and choking
but it was unclear as of later Monday night if they had been discharged
The police and fire services believe that an employee of a chemical supplier who was delivering bleach to the factory mistakenly poured the bleach into a vat storing polyaluminum chloride
and the mix of these chemicals created chlorine gas
The Southern Occupational Safety and Health Center's officials came up with the same finding and shared it with local authorities
Tainan City Labor Affairs Bureau chief Wang Hsin-chi (王鑫基) said in a press statement
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration under the Ministry of Labor has ordered the factory to suspend its operations and notified prosecutors about the employer's suspected violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and relevant regulations
Tainan is to launch a pilot program starting next month that uses artificial intelligence-driven face identification technology at automated teller machines (ATMs) to bolster fraud prevention
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said yesterday
Money mules hired by fraud gangs often use masks and motorcycle helmets to disguise themselves while making withdrawals or carrying out ATM transactions
People are currently not required by law to show their full faces while making withdrawals
creating a loophole that fraud rings have exploited
the pilot facial recognition system to be installed at select ATMs would first "remind" people using a voice recording to take off their masks and helmets as it tries to identify the user
If after 10 to 15 seconds the system still cannot identify the user
an alarm is to sound that may draw the attention of people nearby or bank staff
and deter money mules from engaging in transactions
The system would still not prevent people from going through with transactions even if a face cannot be identified
but he hoped it would have a deterrent effect

Magnitude 4 aftershocks are possible over the next three days
after an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck Tainan at 11:47am yesterday
The epicenter was 32.3km northeast of Tainan City Hall in Guantian District (官田) at a depth of 7.3km
where it measured 4 on a seven-tier intensity scale
The earthquake was caused by the collision of the Eurasian and the Philippine Sea plates to the east of Taiwan
Seismological Center Director Wu Chien-fu (吳健富) said
As the depth of the earthquake was shallow
adding that future aftershocks are likely to be about a magnitude 4
two high-speed rail trains were temporarily halted and inspected
while trains on the route between Dounan Station in Yunlin County and Gangshan Station in Kaohsiung operated at reduced speeds
A resident living on the seventh floor of a building in Tainan’s West Central District (中西) said that he was about to go out for dinner when the earthquake alarm suddenly sounded on his cell phone
but it only lasted for a few seconds and no items in the house fell or were damaged
a magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattled Hualien County at 2:01am yesterday
The epicenter was 19.1km north from Hualien County Hall at a depth of 25.3km
The strongest tremors were felt in Hualien
but some residents in Hualien said the shaking woke them up and that memories of last year’s earthquake resurfaced
Yesterday marked the first anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters in recent years — an earthquake measuring a 7.2 on the Richter scale struck Hualien on April 3 last year
killing 18 people and injuring more than 1,100
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC
yesterday said it has signed an agreement with Innolux Corp (群創) to acquire the flat-panel display maker’s plant in Tainan for NT$17.14 billion (US$530.6 million) amid supply constraints of its advanced packaging capacity constraints
including buildings and manufacturing facilities
the world’s biggest foundry service provider said in a filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange
The chipmaker did not elaborate on whether it would convert the plant into a new panel-level packaging factory
or expand its advanced packaging chip-on-wafer-on-substrate (CoWoS) capacity
The chipmaker "is working whatever it can" to more than double CoWoS capacity this year and next year in order to solve a severe shortage on strong artificial-intelligence (AI) chip demand
Innolux shut down the 5.5-generation plant last year after losing its competitive edge in producing cost-effective flat-panel displays
The company now focuses on rejuvenating its existing facilities and works to diversify into new businesses including chip packaging
Its strategy is to transform itself into a company with two major revenue sources — display and non-display
The deal with TSMC would allow Taiwan to play a crucial role in the global technology sector and economy
Innolux chairman Jim Hung (洪進揚) told investors that the company expected the asset disposal to bring new business opportunities and form partnerships to enhance its technological capabilities
Innolux has already built fan-out panel-level packaging (PLP) capacity by converting a less-advanced 3.5-generation plant into one which would provide entry-level chip packaging services for power management chips and radio frequency chips
The company intends to collaborate with major foundry service providers to advance its chip packaging technology as it looks to pursue opportunities stemming from the AI business
Innolux president James Yang (楊柱祥) said earlier this month
Innolux expects the new chip packaging business to contribute significant revenue in the first quarter of next year
April 3 (CNA) Aftershocks of around magnitude 4 are possible over the next three days following a magnitude 4.9 earthquake that struck Tainan in southern Taiwan at 11:47 a.m
according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA)
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 32.3 kilometers northeast of Tainan City Hall (Guantian District) at a depth of 7.3 km
gauging the actual effect of a seismic event
where it measured 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale
director of the CWA's Seismological Center

two Taiwan High Speed Rail trains were temporarily halted and inspections were undertaken
while Taiwan Railways trains on the route between Dounan Station in Yunlin and Gangshan Station in Kaohsiung operated at reduced speeds
A resident living on the seventh floor of Tainan's West Central District told CNA that he was about to go out for dinner when the earthquake alarm suddenly sounded on his cell phone
The building he resides in then shook noticeably

a magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattled Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 2:01 a.m
The epicenter of the temblor was located 19.1 kilometers north from Hualien County Hall
the shaking still woke up many residents in Hualien
and memories of the strong earthquake a year ago resurfaced
Thursday marks the first anniversary since one of the worst natural disasters in recent years -- a magnitude 7.2 earthquake -- which struck Hualien on April 3
AUO Corp (友達) yesterday said it has agreed to sell its idled manufacturing facility and land in Tainan to Micron Technology Inc for NT$7.4 billion (US$231.8 million) as the company shifts strategy to reduce the impact from the boom-and-bust flat-panel display industry
The company expects to book NT$4.17 billion in disposal gains from the sale
The Tainan factory produced color filters used in monitors
notebook computers and flat-panel TVs before being shut down last year
as AUO sought to optimize its asset utilization
The company has been striving to diversify and broaden its business scope in the past few years to minimize the impact of the LCD industry’s volatility
The company aims to boost sales contribution from its non-panel business to half of its total revenue by 2027
AUO chairman Paul Peng (彭双浪) said last month
AUO also agreed to sell the facilities owned by its solar energy subsidiary AUO Crystal Corp (友達晶材) in Taichung for NT$700 million
the flat panel maker said in a separate filing
The deal would bring about NT$544 million in disposal gains for the company
said in a statement yesterday that it plans to deploy new wafer testing capacity by converting AUO’s Tainan factory into a front-end wafer testing facility
which would support its DRAM chip manufacturing expansions in Taichung and Taoyuan
Market researcher Trendforce Corp (集邦科技) said the transaction with Micron would help AUO improve its overall financial structure this year
AUO has been in the red for more than two years and reported net losses of NT$3.76 billion in the first half of this year

26 (CNA) A magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck in a mountainous area near the border between Tainan and Chiayi County at 7:38 a.m
Sunday continued to keep the area on edge after having been shaken by earthquakes since early Tuesday
about 41.3 kilometers east-northeast of Tainan City Hall
It was one of 39 aftershocks of magnitude 4.0 or above
accompanied by 73 aftershocks between magnitude 3.0 and 3.9
that have peppered the area since a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit nearby Dapu in Chiayi County early on Jan
The possibility of the occurrence of an earthquake of magnitude 5 or above in the coming week could not be ruled out
which would only deal another blow to an already hard-hit area
Graphic: Central Weather AdministrationDue to the high frequency of the temblors
the reported number of damaged houses in the Nanxi area alone has risen to 1,600
The Nanxi District disaster shelter has housed 84 people and is close to being full
but the city said it will provide financial aid to help the evacuees rent temporary places to live
There has been less damage reported on the Chiayi side despite the mainshock occurring there
though there were reports of people being injured and hospitalized
as well as damage to houses in the Dapu area
Graphic: Central Weather AdministrationSunday's earthquake was also strong enough to bring two northbound high speed rail trains operating in Chiayi and Tainan to a temporary halt
and later trains were operated at slower speeds while the line's operator checked for potential damage in higher risk areas
The CWA attributed Sunday's quake to the convergence of the Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate
the two major tectonic plates that influence Taiwan and leave it vulnerable to earthquakes

The parade would then travel along Jianping
Yonghua and Sialin roads before terminating at the Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium on Jiankang Road
A fan meetup would be held inside the stadium after the parade
with participants allowed to enter the venue from 3pm
Huang yesterday urged baseball fans to join the parade with written slogans and get prepared to cheer for Taiwan’s baseball heroes
He also suggested that those who cannot attend in person could watch the livestream of the event on his Facebook page
The parade would be led by Team Taiwan manager Lin Yueh-ping (林岳平) and head coach Kao Chih-kang (高志綱)
Chiu Chih-cheng (邱智呈) and Pan Chieh-kai (潘傑楷)
to share the glory of the championship with everyone
Some people online expressed excitement about the event
while others complained about the inconvenience of work or traffic congestion
Some also cited the example of Japanese baseball star Shohei Ohtani in the victory parade that the Los Angeles Dodgers held in Los Angeles earlier this month
suggesting the organizers should invite the team’s family members to join the parade
the Taipei Philharmonic Chamber Choir (TPCC) also rejoiced in Team Taiwan’s Premier12 victory by unexpectedly singing a rendition of the fan chant Taiwan the Strongest (台灣尚勇) on stage during a concert
“The Re-creations and their Origins,” was held at the National Concert Hall on Thursday
The choir performed the fan chant as an encore
which contrasted with their usual solemn presence when singing classical songs
earning enthusiastic applause and cheering from the audience
The video of the performance went viral online later on
with some people commenting that “this is Taiwan the Strongest sung perfectly on pitch for the first time.”
TPCC music director John Ku (古育仲) yesterday said the choir decided to perform the fan chant on stage when they learned of Team Taiwan’s victory in the final game during the choir’s last rehearsal on Sunday last week
the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Ensemble expressed support for Team Taiwan by mobilizing nearly 200 people
to produce and record an orchestra version of the fan chant within 24 hours after Team Taiwan advanced to the championship game on Saturday last week

The Executive Yuan yesterday approved a Ministry of Culture proposal to spend NT$1.4 billion (US$43.58 million) over four years to establish the National Tainan Art Museum
and to research and promote the history of Taiwanese opera
titled “Rebuilding Taiwanese Art History 2.0,” was proposed following the successful implementation of a seven-year project in which the government appropriated a special budget from 2018 to this year to rebuild the nation’s art history through a collaboration between private and government entities
The project helped bring back from the US paintings by Taiwanese artists collected by Sun Ten Pharmaceutical Co founder Hsu Hong-yen (許鴻源)
Photo courtesy of the Tainan City Museum of Fine Arts
was rediscovered 50 years after it was lost and is on display at the Tokyo University of Arts
repaired more than 8,000 and archived more than 90,000 documents
adding that it has published 456 books and audiovisual works produced by Taiwanese artists
More than 3.62 million people have viewed these exhibitions
“We want to deepen collective efforts to rebuild the nation’s art history and fulfill President William Lai’s (賴清德) National Project of Hope by introducing the Rebuilding Taiwanese Art History 2.0 project,” Department of Art Development Director Chou Ya-ching (周雅菁) told a news conference after a Cabinet meeting in Taipei
Aside from continuing to collect and research materials related to Taiwanese art
the budget approved by the Executive Yuan yesterday would also be used to gather and study documents related to the history of Taiwanese operas and architecture
The funds would also be used to prepare for the establishment of the National Tainan Art Museum
exhibition and education of veteran Taiwanese artists
A preparatory office for the museum would begin operations on March 25 next year
The National Museum of Taiwan Literature in Tainan
the National Taiwanese Opera Center in Kaohsiung and the Taiwan Music Institute and Taiwan Architecture Culture Center in Taipei are to continue efforts to preserve Taiwanese literature
The ministry and the National Development Council would work together to ensure that information gathered through the project could be used for generative artificial intelligence applications and be available to the international community

A plaque from President William Lai (賴清德) has been delivered to Tainan’s Confucius Temple and would be unveiled in a ceremony in November
Lai’s plaque would be the 16th to grace the temple’s eaves
alongside plaques from Qing Dynasty emperors and Taiwan’s presidents
rulers and presidents have observed the tradition of presenting the temple with plaques honoring Confucius’ ideals to teach everyone
The temple’s Da Cheng Hall houses all the plaques given to the temple since Emperor Kangxi (康熙) of the Qing Dynasty from 1683
except for the plaque of Emperor Aisin Gioro Puyi
Tainan Confucius Temple Culture Foundation director Shih Mu-min (石牧民) said
Xuan Tong ascended the throne in 1909 after the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki ceded Taiwan to Japan
He was the final emperor of the Qing Dynasty
as they were only preserved thanks to the Fang (方) family
who had moved them to rural areas before the bombing of Tainan by the US Air Force during World War II

The Tainan District Prosecutors’ Office today said several places associated with the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) were searched after it received complaints of forged recall petition signatures from two Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers
The KMT Tainan City Branch was among the locations searched
along with the residence of an individual surnamed Chuang (莊)
where prosecutors seized party membership lists
cell phones and other evidence while summoning five suspects and related individuals
This comes amid a wave of recall campaigns targeting mostly KMT national and local officials
Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) and Lin Chun-hsien (林俊憲)
were among legislators who the DPP said had constituents whose signatures had been forged on recall petitions
Both lawmakers then sought prosecution on behalf of their constituents
During the review of the first stage of the recall petitions
the Tainan Election Commission found more than 3,000 questionable petition signatures
victims of identity fraud and individuals residing outside the electoral district
Wang appointed a lawyer to file a legal complaint
questioning the origins of 2,000 suspicious signatures after there was no public recall campaign in his district
Investigators will compare the materials seized today and question relevant individuals to determine whether laws have been violated
The search was no different from the “martial law era,” the KMT said in a statement today in response
The party intends to maintain its support for all its members in the face of persecution by the DPP
Today’s search was a sign that the KMT and its supporters are to be unfairly targeted
adding that DPP recall petitions have not faced the same scrutiny
The DPP is trying to cause political chaos and pursue partisan justice
March 22 (CNA) A woman was killed after a fire broke out in an industrial zone in Tainan's Yongkang District early Saturday morning
The bureau received a report of the fire in Asia-Pacific Industrial Zone on Zhongzheng Road at 2:11 a.m.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene quickly learned that a woman was trapped inside a building's second floor and immediately began putting out the blaze using water hoses
The victim was later found dead at the site
Preliminary investigations by police and firefighters identified the deceased as a 76-year-old woman
As the industrial zone consisted of several standalone buildings that are connected to each other
adding that the burned area amounted to approximately 2,000 square meters
A total of 115 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fire
which was eventually extinguished at 5:55 a.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation
28 (CNA) A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck Tainan City
The epicenter of the temblor was located 39.5 kilometers east northeast of Tainan County Hall
where it measured a 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale
March 5 (CNA) The government is planning to hold a small-scale exercise in Tainan on March 27 to assess Taiwan's civil defense and disaster prevention preparedness
the official said the planned exercise will be aimed at examining civilians' ability to find air raid shelters and other cover in times of emergency
The planned exercise will also involve familiarizing people with government policies on civil defense and helping the public prepare emergency kits and other tools
the planned exercise is aimed at equipping people with the ability to respond to high-intensity conflicts
natural disasters and other pressing scenarios
It will build on last year's unscripted tabletop exercises at the Presidential Office
in which officials and experts simulated responses to "gray-zone operations" -- coercive actions shy of armed conflict -- and emergencies in which Taiwan is on "the verge of conflict" with China
The official said that following the Tainan drill
The series of exercises will culminate in the military's annual Han Kuang drills
4 (CNA) Five suspects have been detained by prosecutors in Yunlin County after they were arrested during a raid on a nearly 3-hectare cannabis cultivation area in the mountains of Tainan on Monday
a task force in charge of the case mobilized dozens of police officers and military police and launched a raid of the site at dawn on Monday
cracking down on the cannabis cultivation site and cannabis factories, members of the Yunlin County Police Bureau said at a press conference
They confiscated 1,766 cannabis plants and cultivation and drug-making equipment
and arrested a suspect surnamed Tsai (蔡) and four other members of the suspected drug making ring
Police estimated that the market value of the cannabis plants and products seized was in excess of NT$1 billion (US$30.9 million)
the case was handed over to the Yunlin District Prosecutors Office for further investigation
to detain the five suspects and hold them incommunicado
the Yunlin District Court ruled that the suspects were believed to have committed a felony in violating the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act and the Organized Crime Prevention Act and were considered to be a flight risk
Members of the county police bureau said at the press conference that they received information in May this year that Tsai and others wanted to find land to grow marijuana
and the use of various technological investigation tools
it was confirmed that the suspects had set up a greenhouse in a remote mountainous area of Tainan to grow the crop
The Yunlin police then formed a task force with the Yujing Branch of the Tainan City Police Department and multiple military police units
and reported to the Yunlin District Prosecutors Office to direct the investigation
That culminated in the raid on the mountain site on Monday
When Tainan Dalpra announced his plans to transition to no-gi competition
it was one of the biggest stories in jiu-jitsu
The two-time IBJJF World Champion had mowed through the gi scene and was left with few challenges as the middleweight king
he has gone 2-0 in no-gi matches with both coming at WNO
One of the biggest questions about Tainan's transition was how he would handle the wrestling and stand up fighting in no-gi
he was known primarily as a guard puller who would be most interested in getting the fight down and getting to work as soon as possible
How would he adapt to this new skill that he had very little competition experience in
The answer so far is that it has been a success
There are still some areas that could be cleaned up
but overall Dalpra has shown a lot of skill on the feet while facing Troy Russell and Oliver Taza
with about half of that happening on the feet
he is 4-0 in takedowns - meaning he is averaging one takedown roughly every 2:30 minutes and still hasn't surrendered one of his own
Tainan has adopted a very upright posture with his shoulders bent forward and elbows tight to his body
Through two matches he has marched forward with a lot of pressure into the opponent
primarily controlling hands but also digging into collar ties
It's a very hybrid stance between judo and wrestling
He will drag that arm across and set up single leg entries or trips
he will take simple trip attempts at the moving feet
What's been especially impressive have been his takedown finishes
he entered in on a single leg and pretty quickly finished with a change of momentum
using a cutback-like motion to secure top position right into side control
for his first takedown he went to build to the hips in the same way but was denied - so instead he transitioned right away to elevating the leg and tripping down for a finish
Throughout that Taza match especially he showed a variety of finishes to leg attacks that belied his experience on the feet at this level
There are still some areas that could be cleaned up more
like trying to shoot in bad positions and certain moments where Tainan's own forward pressure is costing him some balance
Coming into this next match with Jay Rodriguez we will likely see this one key area tested - his takedown defense
Intuitive takedown defense typically takes longer for most grapplers to build because of how quickly positions can change in a wrestling scramble
Only when you fully understand the position can you be ahead of the sequence and defend with the fluidity that we see from experienced wrestlers
Tainan was primarily trying to pull up any shots into an upper body clinch where he could use the overhook to throw
