Investment firm is bullish on maritime as it cuts its exposure to China Chinese shipbuilding veteran Ren Yuanlin is turning his investment house’s focus from property to shipowning, inking a string of tanker newbuildings worth close to $800m. Ren-led Yangzijiang Financial Holding is said to have raised its tanker newbuilding tally to 22 with fresh contracts at four Chinese shipyards and is poised to book four handysize bulkers. The company’s order spree, some for its own account but more than half in partnerships with foreign shipping companies, follows the investment company’s strategy to reduce exposure to China — particularly to the troubled real estate sector to focus on high-growth segments. Changhua County’s second-largest settlement and there’s no compelling reason to stay overnight The sights described here are within walking distance of the railway station; seeing all three takes just a few hours But if you’ve a particular interest in the history of policing the Confucian schools where many boys received their education back when Taiwan was part of the Qing Empire or modern yet abandoned infrastructure you may find a trip to Yuanlin very worthwhile Yuanlin’s current population is just under 125,000 and some local Han families have been living here for close to 300 years the town prospered thanks to sugar and pineapple production The colonial authorities established local institutions to facilitate control and development an epidemic-prevention office and a police station What’s now Yuanlin Police Museum (員林警察故事館) used to be official housing for a senior police officer and his family I haven’t been able to ascertain the year of construction but it looks like a typical (and obviously renovated) colonial-era bungalow it has housed what could be the finest collection of police paraphernalia anywhere in Taiwan There’s equipment from the latter part of the colonial period and the short lengths of rope with which policemen could restrain those they’d arrested before handcuffs became standard issue Items from the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) era include batons There’s a forensic-evidence collection kit with adhesive tape and tweezers Taiwan’s police were trained to respond to conventional and the museum displays a hand-cranked air-raid siren Other intriguing items include a bulletproof face mask; a beguilingly complicated Chinese-script typewriter; and a fairly recent riot shield which visitors can pick up and pose with there’s a BMW motorcycle formerly used by the highway patrol The museum is at 14 Sanmin Street (三民街14號) 460m due east of Yuanlin Railway Station (員林車站) It’s open from 9am to 11:30am and 2pm to 4:30pm every day except Monday and almost everything inside is labeled in English and Chinese Singsian Tutorial Academy (興賢書院) stands in the northeastern quarter of Yuanlin Park (員林公園) then given its current layout in 1881 after a public appeal for rebuilding funds a Guangdong native called Chiu Hai (邱海) took over the academy and recruited students from the surrounding area Many of them were preparing for the imperial civil service examinations Chiu is fondly remembered for his devotion to the school; a memorial tablet in the chamber to the left of the main altar bears his name teaching at the academy was abruptly halted when the Japanese colonial authorities launched the Kominka Movement (皇民化運動) an official effort to replace Han identity among Taiwanese with Japanese values and loyalty to the emperor in Tokyo The complex encompasses a central shrine devoted to Wenchang Dijun (文昌帝君) a Taoist deity associated with learning and literature The left wing as you face the front of the shrine is distinctly Chinese in terms of design The one on the right is more typical of buildings constructed during the Japanese colonial era The academy was grievously damaged by the 921 Earthquake a budget of NT$48 million was set aside for reconstruction My first visit to the academy was long after the disaster so I can’t judge how authentic the rebuilding has been and in keeping with the building’s original purpose at least a dozen young people were making use of the good study rooms The academy’s address is 1 Sanmin Street (三民街1號) follow the elevated railway tracks 450m north from Yuanlin Station It’s impossible to miss Yuanlin Railroad Granary (鐵路穀倉) a massive concrete edifice that’s 58m long The plaque at ground level on the building’s south side uses a slightly different English name (“Yuanlin Railroad Barn”) and notes that the granary has been a county-level relic since mid-2003 Up to 10,500 tonnes of grain could be stored in the 18 interconnected silos Stirring and air-circulation machinery prevented overheating or mold accumulation The granary was built in 1976 to hold grain before it was sent by train to Keelung or Kaohsiung for shipping abroad; it’s hard to believe now but Taiwan used to be a food producer of international significance exporters soon realized that road transportation was cheaper than rail and the facility was permanently shuttered in 1983 the granary has been opened to the public for occasional events It certainly looks robust enough to stand for another century The upper part would make for an unusual AirBnB The town’s bus station is just across the road from the granary which is convenient if you plan to travel next to Nantou (南投) or Sitou (溪頭) if you want to take a high-speed train from Changhu HSR Station or if you plan to take a freeway bus to Taipei Steven Crook has been writing about travel He is the co-author of A Culinary History of Taipei: Beyond Pork and Ponlai and author of Taiwan: The Bradt Travel Guide the third edition of which has just been published The dates displayed for an article provide information on when various publication milestones were reached at the journal that has published the article activities on preceding journals at which the article was previously under consideration are not shown (for instance submission Science of the Total EnvironmentCitation Excerpt :Elevated surface ozone concentrations have negative influences on not only human health through asthma and other respiratory problems (Meehl et al. they influence global carbon and water cycles (Lombardozzi et al. much longer than the pace of a city’s development atelier SUPERB perceived this vertical expansion as an opportunity and an urban strategy to transcend the current image of the city of yuanlin the existing institutional building consists of offices mainly it was built in the 1980s and is located in a residential area the plaza in front of the building only functions as a car park the designers were inspired by the characteristics of a tower which they found applicable to their vision of this new addition and that’s where the name ‘ RED elevaTor’ came from or as an extension of a space attached to the main building its verticality redefines the skyline of the city and fulfills the human desire to elevate from the ground they aimed to liberate the symmetry and authoritativeness of the original building by making the elevator a focal point close to the main entrance facing the crossroads they wanted this vertical volume to touch the ground softly the large upper opening not only accommodates service utilities such as ventilation its sculptural form also sets the perspective and aesthetic scale for the context all the openings are carefully designed to express the essence of the space: to connect between the inside and the outside and to divert from the enclosed tubular shape of a lift shaft the dark red semi-gloss finished steel panels of the lift match with the pink tiles on the building façade yet the two materials contrast in texture and proportion the smooth steel panels humbly reflect the surrounding colors making the elevator seem lighter the new elevator is connected to the original building by the shortest distance possible placed at the end of the internal service circulation next to the existing staircase the form and layout inherit the structural orders of the original building and openings the color of the new hallway door frame is in sync with the existing black window frames the arrangement of the interior lighting in the hallway is also based on the structure of the linking passageway the designers plan to install spotlights at designated openings to light up the front plaza in the evening and engage with other public buildings nearby atelier SUPERB believes that this bold urban icon will revitalize the skyline of the city name: RED ElevaTor/ steel panels with paint coatings designers: atelier SUPERB / eric yu designboom has AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style Becoming an industry leader is no mean feat in an economy as vast and dynamic as China’s. Nevertheless, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has managed it having become the largest and most profitable private shipbuilder in China it’s in the world’s top 10 shipbuilding companies and shows no signs of losing that distinction While President Ren Yuanlin has a clear view of the company’s future he takes an equally reflective view of Yangzijiang’s success “Over the past 10 years we’ve grown in size and many of our staff have done well for themselves,” he says “Some of us thought it’s time to enjoy life but I think it’s time to reflect – on what brought Yangzijiang to this level today.” Ren credits China’s shift to an open market in the 1990s with the company’s evolution and believes Yangzijiang wouldn’t have been able to transform into a truly modern company if not for government policy being so supportive China’s efforts to increase its global presence in the shipbuilding industry were also tremendously beneficial as was the rapid growth offered by Singapore and Taiwan’s capital markets the shipbuilder’s fortunes are down to far more than just the circumstances around it “We worked a bit harder than other people and we’ll grow Yangzijiang into a truly respectable Yangzijiang’s story goes back to the 1950s to a time when the company still focused on ship repair and dismantling It wasn’t until China’s economic reforms that the company began to prioritise shipbuilding and its abilities in this field proved exceptional a 5,000-tonne deck barge was built for Singapore A similarly impressive feat followed the next year with a 1,200 passenger vessel built to cruise the Yangtze – the largest ship at the time to set sail on the river it’s no wonder Yangzijiang has become stable enough to weather multiple economic crises Yangzijiang avoided any order cancellations and delivered each project on schedule the shipbuilder again avoided the worst of the impact; indeed Well-insulated against negative consequences “While we can’t escape the impact of business cycles we can maintain better profitability compared with peers in both good times and bad times,” says Ren Ren has guided Yangzijiang to face these bad times not only through passive resistance but also by actively evolving and avoiding complacency he decided to shift the company’s focus to include the European market making use of its ability to offer a lower cost in overseas markets he worked to make sure Yangzijiang was equipped to meet the German market’s demands for high quality The vision to be number one in China couldn’t have been achieved if not for the support of Ren’s team which means he is equally supportive of them Ren promotes their continuous learning and growth bringing in veterans of the shipbuilding industry and providing onsite training He also ensures management exemplifies a transparent drawing on the experiences of frontline employees to determine how operations can be best improved as long as corrections are timely and lessons are learnt.” The most crucial element is to encourage an entrepreneurial we would prefer people who make three mistakes out of 10 tasks completed rather than people who complete only one task correctly,” says Ren as long as corrections are timely and lessons are learned.” Ren’s innovative approach to the market has facilitated many client relationships the company has maintained an order book of US$4 billion which equates to two years of work and revenue stream The shipbuilder deals with big industry players But it’s not just reliability that’s earned Yangzijiang such a good reputation – it’s also the shipbuilder’s willingness to go above and beyond in service of its clients a German shipping group) ordered four vessels each from Yangzijiang and another shipbuilder the market value of the ordered vessels had increased and the other shipbuilder demanded that the Döhle Group pay the new price while Yangzijiang accepted the initially agreed-upon price the Döhle Group would order a total of US$2.5 billion in projects from Yangzijiang This story is evidence of the success of Ren’s philosophy that “helping the customer is helping us” Yangzijiang continued to support its customers however it could with innovation and creativity in every element of its operations “We should always be mindful of the changes in demand act on them and improve our products,” says Ren a small improvement could lead to substantial cost saving and economic returns to ship owners That’s how we create opportunities for ourselves and achieve sustainable growth.” The CEO Magazine is more than a business title; No. 236383 | Registered office: The Adelphi, 1-11 John Adam Street, London, WC2N 6HT | VAT Reg No: GB 340 436 876 China's largest private shipyard, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, told regulators Wednesday that its executive chairman has stepped away on a temporary leave of absence in order to assist an investigation by the Chinese government.  In a response to an inquiry from the Singapore Exchange's regulatory board, Yangzijiang said that its executive chairman, founder and controlling shareholder, Ren Yuanlin, took a temporary leave beginning August 8. On the same day, rumors of his absence sent the company's stock plummeting by more than 20 percent, prompting Yangzijiang to file a request for an immediate suspension of trading. "Mr. Ren Yuanlin . . . is currently assisting in a confidential investigation carried out by certain PRC governmental authorities," the shipbuilder wrote. "Until 8 August 2019, Mr. Ren Yuanlin had continued to have a decision-making role in respect of major matters of the Company . . . Beginning 9 August 2019, Mr. Ren Yuanlin has been granted a leave of absence by the Board to focus on the investigation." The reason for Ren Yuanlin's leave is to expedite the completion of the investigation so that he can resume his full-time duties as soon as possible, the company said. Ren Letian, the firm's CEO and Ren Yuanlin's son, has assumed the role of executive chairman in his absence.  Yangzijiang added that to the best of its knowledge, none of the firm's directors, executives or subsidiaries are targets of the Chinese government investigation. Only Ren Yuanlin's assistance has been requested, the firm said, and none of the firm's other employees or its operations are affected. The company has filed a request with the Singapore Exchange to resume trading on Thursday.  The investigation Yangzijiang cited may be an ongoing anticorruption probe into the activities of a former local Chinese Communist Party official with ties to the shipbuilding industry.  © Copyright 2025 The Maritime Executive, LLC. Autosomal recessive inherited ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2), caused by SETX gene mutations, is characterized by early-onset, progressive cerebellar ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, oculomotor apraxia and elevated serum α-fetoprotein (AFP). This study aimed to expand and summarize the clinical and genetic characteristics of SETX variants related to AOA2. We discovered a novel homozygous variant of the SETX gene as a cause of AOA2 in the current patient and expanded the genotypic spectrum of AOA2. Moreover, the clinical features of AOA2 and genetic findings in SETX were assessed in reported cohorts and are summarized in the present study. Autosomal recessive inherited ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2) oculomotor apraxia and elevated serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) This study aimed to expand and summarize the clinical and genetic characteristics of SETX variants related to AOA2 electromyogram and radiological findings of the patient were evaluated Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was performed on the patient using next-generation sequencing (NGS) the variants were confirmed by Sanger sequencing and the pathogenicity of the variants was classified according to the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics/Association for Molecular Pathology (ACMG/AMP) guidelines We reviewed 57 studies of AOA2 patients with SETX mutations and collected clinical and genetic information Results: The patient was a 40-year-old Chinese woman who primarily presented with numbness and weakness of the lower limbs in her teenage years increased serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) and decreased anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels We identified a novel homozygous missense mutation of the SETX gene in the patient via Whole-exome and Sanger sequencing The variant was located in the DNA/RNA helicase domain and is highly conserved The protein prediction analysis verified the SETX variant as a damaging alteration and ACMG/AMP guidelines classified it as likely pathogenic we identified 229 AOA2 cases with SETX variants We found that 107 (46.7%) patients were European 50 (21.8%) were African and 48 (21.0%) were Asian five from two families were Mainland Chinese The main clinical features were cerebellar ataxia (100%) cerebellar atrophy (95.3%) and elevated AFP concentration (92.0%) Most reported SETX mutations in AOA2 patients were missense Conclusion: We discovered a novel homozygous variant of the SETX gene as a cause of AOA2 in the current patient and expanded the genotypic spectrum of AOA2 the clinical features of AOA2 and genetic findings in SETX were assessed in reported cohorts and are summarized in the present study mutations in the SETX gene are also associated with an autosomal dominant inheritance form of the juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis 4 (ALS4) (OMIM 602433) we report the clinical and genetic characterizations of an AOA2 patient with early menopause A new homozygous mutation in SETX was identified in the patient there were few reports about AOA2 in Mainland China we reviewed 57 studies that reported AOA2 patients with SETX mutations from 2004 to 2022 to identify the clinical and genetic spectrum of AOA2 caused by SETX mutations and summarize the relevant clinical symptoms of AOA2 patients The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province Affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University The family members signed informed consent prior to sample collection and gene testing Clinical assessment of the proband and her parents was performed by neurologists including physical and neurological examinations The proband was considered to have hereditary peripheral neuropathy as she had progressive gait disturbance and muscle atrophy The blood samples and pedigree were collected from the family after obtaining informed consent luteinizing hormone (LH) and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCSs) were evaluated Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the proband was performed on a GE Signa TwinSpeed 1.5T Medical System Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) by neuro physicians The proband (II-1) was a 40-year-old Chinese woman born to a non-consanguineous couple Her lower limbs started to numb and weaken at the age of 16 and then she dropped out of school at the senior high school stage The patient subsequently obtained employment in an optical factory and her hips became numb and immobile after long periods of sitting she developed progressive gait disturbance and muscle atrophy in both lower extremities Physical and neurological examinations were performed at our hospital when the patient was 40 years old and revealed gait disturbances severe pes cavus and early-onset menopause but no oculomotor apraxia Sensory and motor examinations revealed absent tendon reflexes muscular atrophy of both lower limbs and significant muscle weakness in the distal upper and lower limbs The patient demonstrated no obvious cognitive impairment with MMSE and MoCA scores of 27 (normal > 26 points) and 23 points (normal ≥ 25 points) the patient required assistance with walking The black arrow indicates the proband that subjected for Whole-exome sequencing (WES) (B) Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the proband showing mild degeneration of white matter (white arrows) (D) Sequencing results showed that the homozygous variant c.7118C>T (p Thr2373Ile) of SETX was inherited from both of the proband's parents (left) Asp9Ala) variant in MME was inherited from the proband's father (right) (E) Conservation analysis of SETX c.7118C>T (p (F) Secondary structures of wild-type and SETX p Thr2373Ile variant were analyzed by SOPMA (Self-Optimized Prediction method with Alignment) online arrow indicates change in secondary structure (G) Prediction of the change in the three-dimensional (3D) structure of senataxin by SETX c.7118C>T (p Clinical and molecular characteristics of patients with SETX p The result indicated that both her parents were heterozygous carriers for the c.7118 C>T (p and her father was heterozygous for the c.26 A>C (p the parents did not show any SETX- or MME-caused manifestations Heterozygous mutation in MME are associated with the Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease type 2T (CMT2T) (OMIM 617017) and spinocerebellar ataxia 43 (SCA43) (OMIM 617018), which both have a late-onset age and neither of them has symptoms of early menopause (Higuchi et al., 2016) The proband's father (I-1) was heterozygous for the MME c.26A > C variant and was not affected The MME variant was of uncertain significance according to the ACMG/AMP guidelines as the criteria for pathogenic and benign are contradictory (BS4 Evaluating the clinical symptoms and family history we considered that the c.26 A>C (p Asp9Ala) variant in the MME gene may not be pathogenic in the proband in this study the SETX c.7118 C>T variant was classified as likely pathogenic (PP3+PP4+PM2+PM5) Combining the clinical manifestations and genetic findings of the proband we considered the proband as an AOA2 caused by a novel homozygous SETX missense mutation AOA2 is characterized by progressive cerebellar ataxia associated with peripheral neuropathy, cerebellar atrophy and elevated AFP concentrations (Anheim et al., 2009) we report an AOA2 patient with a novel homozygous SETX mutation c.7118 C>T (p The patient's age of onset was 16 years when she presented with numbness and weakness of the lower limbs she developed progressive gait disturbance accompanied by muscle atrophy of the lower limb extremities She was characterized by cerebellar ataxia deep sensory loss and early-onset menopause The pathogenicity of the SETX variant was confirmed by clinical symptoms human genome variation database analysis and functional prediction the SETX variant was categorized as a likely pathogenic variant two male patients had azoospermia and were infertile (A) Distribution of SETX gene variants in ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2) patients throughout exons The variant in the red box was detected in the present study (B) The clinical symptoms of AOA2 patients with SETX variants (C) The origin distribution of the AOA2 patients there were several limitations of the present study As the patient had not sought medical treatment at our hospital before her past medical history and examination results were unclear and the progression of her clinical symptoms was different to determine Asp9Ala variant was not the cause of the patient's disease based on her onset age more family verification and functional experiments are needed to confirm this finding Although the pathogenicity of the novel SETX variant identified is explained by the clinical phenotype of the proband the pedigree analysis and bioinformatic predictions further functional experiments are needed to determine the impact of the variant on the expression and function of senataxin we identified a novel homozygous mutation of the SETX gene in a Chinese woman Our report may expand the clinical and genetic spectrum of AOA2 the clinical features of AOA2 and genetic findings in SETX were assessed from reported cohorts and are summarized in the present study The original contributions presented in the study are included in the With the movie industry falling victim to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has kept many consumers at home due to fear of infection, two more theaters have announced that they plan to close temporarily as of today. Chang Hwa Cinemas and Taiwan Cinemas in Changhua City, two of the three theaters in Changhua County, said that they would suspend operations until the pandemic eases. The announcements came after Taipei’s Dynasty Theater on Thursday said that it would close for three months from Monday next week due to the virus, and Tainan’s Madou Cinema on Friday said that it would close for two months as of tomorrow. Neither Chang Hwa Cinemas nor Taiwan Cinemas, which blamed COVID-19 for their closures, said when they would reopen. The third multiplex in Changhua County — Yuanlin Cinemas — has decided to stay open, but said it would reduce its adult ticket price from NT$200 to NT$180 to attract customers. Yuanlin requires customers to have their temperatures taken and their hands disinfected before entering the venue as a disease prevention measure. Yuanlin is also limiting the number of customers to 40 in each of its four theaters so that social distancing can be observed. Madou Cinema, which opened in the 1960s and is now a second-run theater, said on Facebook that the pandemic has delayed scheduling for many movies and has hurt its operations. “To avoid creating any loopholes in the current anti-epidemic efforts ... that could compromise the health of customers and employees, the cinema has decided to close for two months from April 29,” Madou Cinema said. “Should the virus cease to spread, we will see you again,” it said. The Tainan City Government’s Economic Development Bureau said it has estimated that sales posted by movie theaters in the city have fallen by at least 60 percent, as many people are staying at home to avoid the risk of infection. Madou Cinema has become the first victim in the city to temporarily shut down to avoid further losses, bureau Director-General Chen Kai-ling (陳凱凌) said. Tainan has 12 movie theaters and the bureau said that so far, no others have any plans to close temporarily. Dynasty Theater, which opened in 1991 on Taipei’s Minquan W Road, has seen business plummet in the past few weeks. Chinese-language media reports cited Dynasty employees as saying the virus scare has brought the number of customers to less than 100 per day, which has seriously affected business. The reports said that the theater would help its employees seek financial aid from the government. Dynasty, which is also a second-run theater, said that it would remodel its facilities while it is closed. private shipbuilding enterprise to be listed in Singapore in 2007 Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has quickly ascended to become one of the world’s top 20 shipbuilders and China’s top five shipbuilders it has been included in China’s Top 500 Companies list for three consecutive years and ranks higher each year The secret of success – aiming to be No.1 and keeping a step ahead our success is based on the global transfer of manufacturing operations to China as a result of China’s reforms and opening-up and also on Yangzijiang Shipbuilding keeping abreast with the world’s shipbuilding developments and remaining a step ahead of many other shipyards we became the first shipbuilding enterprise to successfully restructure our operations in 2000 we were one of the first to find our target market in Europe and America and grasp the opportunities It was also good timing that American and European ship owners wanted to offer good ship newbuilding prices and we managed to build a stable and loyal client base Yangzijiang Shipbuilding was the earliest listed shipbuilding enterprise in China and moved quickly into the fast track for capital expansion We also keep a step ahead in building new shipyards and expanding our production capacity We won a handful of orders before the financial crisis and plants that were built had already been put into operation and completed the run-in period These great opportunities and the policy of “aiming to be No.1 and keeping a step ahead” have resulted in Yangzijiang Shipbuilding’s miraculous growth Core elements for corporate development – product positioning JH:  As an experienced and reputed manager of a shipbuilding enterprise in China who has the wisdom courage and perseverance of modern entrepreneurs and also based on your years of experience in the industry what core elements do you think the Yangzijiang Group has when taking such huge strides in development Ren Yuanlin: The key to an enterprise’s success and development is the right product positioning When the new Yangzijiang Shipyard had just come into operation and in the run-in period four years ago we knew clearly that we had certain gaps in management experience workmanship and labour quality compared to global leaders we set a target of being strong in just one or two products and the choice of products had to meet the market demand and be adapted to our own capabilities we chose 4,000 TEU-level container vessels as our leading product This strategy has proven to be quite effective Another factor is staff recruitment and retainment We have a unique incentive programme for staff management We think that the fruits of corporate growth must be shared among our staff in order to fully explore our employees’ potential We have distributed shares among our backbone staff through listing and outward investment and recruited a large number of technical experts and skilled workers that the Company was in urgent need of to build a stable team it is quite important for the Company to resort to capital operation channels such as listing This has an amplification effect and gives the Company funds to engage in technical reforms build and develop its clients’ confidence and trust and attract talented employees I think that these are three core elements for enterprise development JH:  You just mentioned that product positioning is quite important Actually many other shipyards are also aware of this but they often can’t find the right or steady position you must have great insight into and experience of judging the market and making preparations with the entire team – such as through market surveys and the development of vessel types we need to make ample preparation in advance we need to have a strong ability to adapt to market changes the shipyard must focus on mainstream ship types and make them well designed and in longer series we need to best meet the special requirements and expectations of our clients through customised products we need to continuously upgrade and optimise mature products to attract potential clients the enterprise must keep track of the market’s pulse To better tackle the market challenges – grasp the opportunities JH:  What do you predict future shipbuilding market developments will be and what initiatives and efforts has Yangzijiang Shipbuilding taken to tackle the looming economic and market challenges and uncertainties and maintain and develop its position Ren Yuanlin: I don’t expect the shipping market to recover within a short period The recession caused by the financial crisis in 2008 isn’t over yet Efforts made by governments to save the market haven’t changed the situation fundamentally ship owners have surplus shipping capacity shipyards have surplus production capacity Despite an expected slowdown in newbuild orders Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has maintained and achieved profits above 20% in 1H2011 This was primarily due to Yangzijiang’s ability to retain shipbuilding orders secured before the financial crisis that command relatively higher margins than current newbuilding orders Yangzijiang has not experienced any cancellations even during the financial crisis back in 2008 and the continuous execution of these orders ensures positive growth in both the margins and earnings throughout 2012 and even in 2013 Yangzijiang is taking steps to augment its shipbuilding capacity This will come to fruition when the firm’s new yards in three locations in Jiangsu province become fully operational in 2013 Although expanding the scale might lead to lower profits on a single project Yangzijiang’s overall profit-making ability will be safeguarded and strengthened we are focusing on designing and building larger and more technologically complex vessels with environmentally friendly and energy efficient features in order to better capture market opportunities and improve our operating margins We are also working on diversifying our product structure into the fields of offshore engineering ship demolition and metal logistics services These are also measures we are adopting to respond to the surplus shipbuilding capacity by partial transformation Since ship scrapping and metal logistics could offset the growing cost of shipbuilding we need to improve both the scale and strength of our ship scrapping and metal logistics operations within a short period we still regard the shipbuilding business as our core business and will further expand and develop it while also building a new corporate pattern that has offshore structures ship scrapping and metal logistics as new pillars Shareholders and ship owners have the same interests JH:  Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has both shareholders and public investors following the restructuring and listing The Company also needs to deal with ship owners These parties have apparently quite different interests or even conflicting interests in certain concrete matters Ren Yuanlin: There is no doubt that maximising the interests of shareholders is the primary target of a public enterprise This target must be fulfilled under the precondition that the interests of ship owners must be protected it is impossible to maximise the interests of shareholders we must have a batch of ship owners with which we cooperate well and share benefits Container vessel owners were the first to be impacted by the global financial crisis in 2008 More than 80% of our orders were for container vessels we were one of the few shipyards without any ship cancellations We stuck to one principle: we are open to any discussion provided the owner doesn’t choose to cancel its ship We provided a lot of support to ship owners accepting a change of ship type and long-term postponements and allowing ships to continue berthing at our shipyard after delivery These measures helped our ship owners to get through difficult times We received a lot of short-cycle orders in the subsequent rebound of the bulk carrier and container ship markets by making best use of our slots Since some orders for high-value-added container vessels have been postponed for two to three years we are still maintaining healthy growth in our profits for 2011 and estimate that this will continue in 2012 while many shipyards are making no profits or are suffering from a serious drop in profits I think that the two targets of maximising the interests of shareholders and protecting the interests of ship owners are actually the same from a macroscopic perspective through sincere cooperation with ship owners around the world Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has become one of the few listed shipbuilding enterprises that are making great profits for their shareholders Adding value to the relations with classification societies JH:  How do you think classification societies could offer better support and service to Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Ren Yuanlin: I do expect and appreciate more support from classification societies to Yangzijiang in developing and making ship designs and products that are competitive in the market and of high quality and a lot of effort must of course be made to achieve and realise the above I would like to take the opportunity to thank DNV again for its strong and valuable support to us in the ship development work classification societies are more knowledgeable about future technology and the development of regulations which is an area we would like more cooperation in Sign up for gCaptain’s newsletter and never miss an update and updates delivered daily straight to your inbox After The Ren Yuanlin-led investment firm is said to have contracted the Chinese shipyard to build four 50,000-dwt product tankers. The deal does not involve any optional vessels. Shipbuilding sources said Yangzijiang Financial signed the contract on speculation last year, but the deal was never reported. Jingjiang Nanyang is scheduled to deliver three vessels in 2026 and one in the first quarter of 2027. Officials at Yangzijiang Financial were not available for comment. A price has yet to emerge for the quartet. Sources said Yangzijiang Financial is paying less than $45m per ship. The tankers, each featuring 12 cargo tanks plus two slop tanks, will be built to meet the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emissions standards for NOx and Phase 3 of the Energy Efficiency Design Index regulation. Brokers said Yangzijiang Financial has roped in the privately owned Scorpio Group of Monaco to oversee construction of the product carriers. This is believed to be the second newbuilding project on which the two companies have teamed up. The first involved two MR tankers ordered at parent company Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in 2023. Sources said Yangzijiang Financial sold the pair of scrubber-fitted newbuildings to Thenamaris of Greece last year for $53m each. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding recently delivered the first vessel — the 50,500-dwt SeaExplorer (built 2025). The second is due to roll out of the dry dock by the middle of this year. Brokers said Yangzijiang Financial will not be operating the four Jingjiang Nanyang tanker newbuildings. It is planning to sell them. Taizhou-based Jingjiang Nanyang Shipbuilding is a medium-size shipyard. It was established in 1995 and is equipped with one dry dock and four slipways. It started off by constructing platform supply vessels and anchor-handling tug supply units before switching to cargo vessels. The largest vessels that it has delivered were handymax bulkers. Clarksons’ Shipping Intelligence Network shows Jingjiang Nanyang has 19 newbuildings on its orderbook, spanning four ultramax bulk carriers, two 25,000-dwt heavy-deck cargo ships and a number of anchor-handlers. “Yangzijiang Financial’s newbuilding contract is the first MR tanker deal for the shipyard,” said one shipbuilding source.
