They're serving as substitute teachers in New Mexico and worked as bus drivers in Massachusetts Minnesota and Wisconsin are training their Guards as certified nurse assistants, reflecting a survey published last June by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisting Living that found 94% of nursing homes were understaffed. New York has more than 600 nursing homes. As soon as the Guardsmen pass their EMT certification exams, the plan is to quickly deploy them to those that need staff. Army Specialist Coleman said he’s worried about the exam, but confident in Bershad’s instruction. “We're here to support the state,” Coleman said. “Whatever the state needs.” This story was produced by the American Homefront Project, a public media collaboration that reports on American military life and veterans. Fletcher said that he and Bershad often took shots at each other in good fun, adding “the war of 1812 was still going on” between the two former soldiers. Fletcher said Bershad taught more than 20,000 students during his decades-long career, calling his late friend both a legendary professor and military officer. “One of the most amazing profs I have ever had the privilege to meet,” one of Bershad’s students wrote for his obituary. “Kind, understanding and exceptionally fair. The rest of U of C could learn from him.” In 2010, Bershad was one of 13 people tasked with analyzing a painting believed to be a newly discovered self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci. At the time, Bershad initially agreed with the rest of the experts that the painting was a da Vinci original. The lone historian on the panel full of scientists, Bershad reversed his decision after discovering conflicting reports about the painting’s origin, which remains a mystery. Before volunteering for military service, Bershad had a love of da Vinci and Renaissance art. Accepted to Stanford University at only 14 years old, Bershad travelled to Rome for his doctoral research but returned to the U.S. to train as an officer, rising to the rank of captain in the United States Marine Corps. Bershad was decorated many times for bravery and leadership in combat, and received some of the highest awards granted by the U.S. for military service, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, a Navy Commendation and four Purple Hearts. Bershad was awarded the Legion of Merit while on a mission with American and Vietnamese special-operations soldiers. After parachuting into enemy territory, Bershad found himself in command of the unit when the Vietnamese commander was mortally wounded.  “He delivered effective suppressive fire with his automatic weapon in order to divert the attack long enough to allow the casualties to be evacuated,” a military citation on the incident read. “A frogman, a paratrooper — he’s the elite of the elite,” Fletcher said. A wake will be held for Bershad at St. Mary’s University on Thursday, and Fletcher said members of the public are welcome to attend. transmission or republication strictly prohibited This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic. He tweets @WBURSteve Jonathan Winickoff practicing pediatrician at Mass General Hospital and the former chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium David Bershad, co-owner of Vape Daddy's, one of the largest retail vape establishments in Massachusetts. Dr. Jonathan Winickoff approved of Baker's ban, saying: “This is hitting young people, whereas tobacco use takes years and years and years [of] accumulated lung damage to cause an effect. These effects, these vape products, that damage is immediate, and that is why we have the emergency order from the governor.” He also applauded the standing order issued by state public health officials that people can go to pharmacies across Massachusetts to get free or reduced-price nicotine replacement products. “FDA-approved nicotine is two-and-a-half times more effective at getting tobacco users off of all products," he said. "… When you use [the] nicotine patch and gum, you have a chance to become nicotine-free — a much greater chance than if you use these high-potency, flavored electronic cigarettes." David Bershad, co-owner of the vape shop, "Vape Daddy's," which has three locations in Massachusetts, said this ban essentially puts him out of business. He used to have four locations — with his fourth in Norwood — until the town voted to ban flavored e-cigarettes. “I think the state has just completely overreached in this panic,” he said. He also predicted that people will go to extremes to get their vape fixes, challenging the idea that Baker's ban will make people safer. “You're going to get people making bathtub e-liquid, and who knows how much nicotine they're going to put in it," he said. “Now instead of having products produced with responsible, national concerns ... you're going to have people buying it from people on the street. Now, you're gonna see people die.” Leo Beletsky, professor of law and health sciences at Northeastern University, said the ban was unlikely to fully address the cause of vaping illnesses. "In order to address the issue, we first have to figure out what the problem is. A product-wide ban on flavors does not seem to be well-calibrated to address these illnesses," he said. "As far as we know, these illnesses are not linked to flavored products, so it would be an odd response to respond to these illnesses by banning flavored products."
