and fantastical but underneath its gaudy fantasia is a vein of genuine emotion as it explores notions of power and the price of running from your moral compass in the face of having it all The crew is able to break out Roller so he can avoid his murder charge and head to Havana but Desna decides to stay because can’t leave her brother Dean behind It’s an understandable act of vengeance — especially after Benedict killed Arlene — but it casts doubt on the future of her friendship with Desna Niecy Nash spoke with Vulture about how she gets into character the future of Desna’s relationship with Ann When did you know you wanted to be an actor?I knew I wanted to be an actor when I was 5 years old and I saw the most gorgeous black woman on television I want to be black and fabulous and on TV.” What has it been like transitioning into more dramatic roles?Well I had always seen myself being a dramatic actress in my mind but comedy embraced me so fully and then it was hard to break out of that because the industry only saw me in one way When I finally was able to turn in a performance in that lane Maybe you can do this work.” And now I get it so much so that people forgot I can do comedy What attracted you to stepping behind the camera for “Zaddy Was a Rolling Stone”?I’ve been wanting to direct for years I thought I was going to end up doing more in the multi-cam world How long can you run around in skintight jumpsuits what you can do is put on some sweatpants and sit behind the camera and yell “Action!” Was there anything about directing that surprised you The toughest revelation is the fact that your director’s cut is not the final cut but my cut is going to be so great that they’re not going to want to touch it.” And then you see it and it’s a totally different vibe to what you shot that won’t be that bad,” and then I was like I’m having a heart palpitation.” It’s like they took my baby apart and stitched it back together Was there anything you wish audiences got to see?I wish they got to see the music video between Roller and I as I cut it How exactly was it different than what you shot?It was just a different visual presentation Whereas I felt like my version told more of a story you turn in as much film as you can — that’s another thing that it taught me because they want a lot more choices once they get in the bay “Why do I need choices if I know what I want?” Because the choices are not just for you They are for the other people who have to come behind you and do an edit we’ve seen Desna’s growing anxiety over the violence in her life to the point that she’s hallucinating seeing blood on her hands What do you think this says about Desna and her relationship to power?The blood on her hands was kind of literal You are the linchpin in all of it.” It was a reckoning of being honest with yourself Desna also gets called out as being selfish Quiet Ann actually brings it up at the very end of the finale: “You wanted it all now you got it.” Do you agree with Ann about that?I think power corrupts you are doing a bad thing for a good reason like what we all watched happen to Walter White — but after he got the power You are really trying to do a bad thing for a good reason and then you taste that power and it’s like Desna’s decisions have really affected her friendships Do you think that relationship can be mended going forward?They’ve been through a lot together One of the most memorable aspects of Claws is As someone from South Florida who also has family in New Orleans where y’all film How does costuming affect your performance and how you approach a character?I’m a visual person When we had different people at the beginning and they were trying to create this look for Desna I had a soccer-mom bob with highlights in it and free.” I didn’t want to start this woman as “I’m at a strip mall with my highlights and my soccer-mom bob!” It felt false when I looked in the mirror and so I couldn’t find her within me until I could visualize her And our costume designer Dolores Ybarra is amazing Do you have a favorite costume from this season I had three different leopard prints—a bodysuit and then a different leopard print on my shoes I felt like that black-and-white jumpsuit spoke to the duality of the good versus the evil that was happening in that episode I loved the look I wore when I met my father for the first time and he took us to the museum You can tell Desna gets confidence from how she dresses I feel like she dresses like a strip-mall superhero I like that!If a strip mall had a superhero I originally pitched her wearing jumpsuits because I felt like she didn’t live a lifestyle that gave her time to stand in the closet and pick out separates I don’t even have to question whether or not it matches How did you learn to project such confidence in yourself and in your work?You have to love yourself where you are It doesn’t mean that there’s not room for improvement but even if I want to go from here to there my “here” has to start with me loving myself and self-care is how you act on what you feel including your recent Emmy nomination for When They See Us What are left her date to solve someone else’s problem and she needs to get a Big O before Nail Palm to ensure a Big V The friendships on this show feel real to me Dean is at Bryce and Jen’s new house and Jen smashes her finger when Bryce suggests he might help Uncle Daddy out more than he let on Polly and Quiet Ann are helping Desna get ready for her date and she’s wearing an amazing African print peplum ensemble Virginia is on set for the dancing gig but it turns out to be a little more like porn effectively cock-blocking her for the second time She goes with Quiet Ann and a baseball bat to get her out of the bathroom smashing up the “director’s” place in the meantime Desna is nervous and Jen tries to calm her down but the conversation turns to Jen’s new house Desna sees that they’re already being dragged down and she says they might have to give the house back but she’s going to cheer her on despite her attitude She hears Jen’s voice in her head as the rounds fly by I didn’t know I needed a nail art competition on my TV Roller is ingratiating himself with Gladys and he almost gets her cell phone when she’s leaving Desna’s Divas and the ladies from Glint Nails have made it to the final round but her team cheers her on from the stands and I almost cried Desna describes her art like her life right now: chaotic and complicated They get $15,000 and look who’s there to celebrate Jen takes Dean home and she discovers some art he’s done of the Koonses with blood coming out of their eyes He tells Jen that Desna said karma was gonna get them and karma did One of the best crime series of the second half of the last decade concluded early this month so it never got the attention of either a premium-cable shiny object for The Discourse or a network fixture But for those who watched it while it aired—and just as importantly those who have a chance to enjoy it from the beginning—“Claws” was something special an off-the-wall Florida noir with deeply authentic female friendships depicted by a cast of TV ringers The premise itself is something akin to “Ozark” by way of Carl Hiaasen—Niecy Nash led the series as Desna Simms whose Florida nail salon launders money for an organized crime-run pill mill with which it shares a strip mall But while Desna is unquestionably our lead the beating heart of the show is her entire network of friends/coworkers/co-conspirators her recovering alcoholic best friend; Polly (Carrie Preston) a sweet-natured pathological liar; Quiet Ann (Judy Reyes) taciturn lookout; and Virginia (Karrueche Tran) the young naif Desna takes under her wing after they initially feud over the same man But they’re cartoon characters in the shape of people you know particularly in the show’s Sunshine State milieu and their close-knit idiosyncrasies echo the nature of the salon as a social center—these are women in a particularly dangerous boys’ club much was made of how women’s whisper networks can be a way of keeping one another safe We’ve analyzed the role of the male antihero to exhaustion particularly since the turn of the millennium when Tony Soprano started a new boom of the archetype we’ve spent years pondering what we talk about when we talk about Walter White But Desna has quietly become one of the most interesting antiheroines in the last five years of TV a woman who is not ruthless by nature but has seen what the world does to women who aren’t hard enough to match it blow-for-blow It of course doesn’t hurt that Nash’s resume includes stellar work in both comedic and dramatic roles both of which she brings to bear as a woman in very real danger but often ridiculous circumstances there are plenty of stories with one or two memorable characters and background characters who are ciphers by comparison but I’m delighted to report “Claws” doesn’t have that problem is full of people that simultaneously feel like they could only exist in a technicolor noir like this one and are of the kind we hardly ever get to see on TV Take Desna’s brother Dean (Harold Perrineau) one of the most refreshing depictions of an autistic person on TV in recent memory Dean as a character has plenty of recognizable symptoms—physical tics tendencies to get stuck down rabbit holes of new interests—but simply by being an adult and a Black person he’s already portraying autism from a perspective we hardly ever see onscreen equally as important—and as rare for television—Dean is allowed to be sexual He’s had at least two flings over the course of the series first with Virginia and then with a doula/life coach played by Linda Hamilton Desna is depicted as worrying for Dean’s well-being but only because of his tendency to assume the best of people in their dangerous world not out of any denial of his autonomy as an adult upon discovering Hamilton’s character is pregnant Dean has a heart-to-heart with her about his anxieties about the idea of being a father and how even as someone who’s accepting and proud of who he is he’s not sure if he’d be prepared to raise an autistic child himself It’s a deeply moving scene that conveys thoughts I’ve had myself as an autistic person and it’s an absolutely remarkable thing to encounter on a basic cable show about the drug trade there’s the show’s longest-lasting antagonist “Breaking Bad”’s Dean Norris as Clay “Uncle-Daddy” Husser a bisexual Dixie Mafia boss who sports art of his late wife on his coke nail Norris plays Husser as something akin to a cranked-out Tennessee Williams patriarch all growls and gold-plated guns and Colonel Sanders accents and might be having the time of his life more than any other single actor on the show best demonstrates its unique blend of camp character work and perpetual zig-zag plotting Quiet Ann has been summoned to visit her family a political dynasty of conservative Cuban-Americans who look down on her eventually loses her temper—only to be told her parents are both gay and act as one another’s beards and they look down on her for being a criminal “Claws” will have ended its four-season run; I wish I knew enough about the labyrinthine workings of streaming rights to tell you where it might end up next But it’s exactly the sort of show that becomes many a Netflix browser’s next obsession if placed in the right spot it would be a perfect capper for it to become the next big binge-watch would be for more shows to come along that do what it did uniquely well—three-dimensional female characters and empathy for people with a combination of bad luck and questionable Kenneth scoffs but Desna gets him to talk to Dean in the chapel Kenneth nervously gets Dean to talk about everything and tells him to refocus his energy to something more positive Dean is very focused on taking down the shooters and tells Kenneth he killed someone and was satisfied doing it Virginia’s recovering and the entire gang stops by to look after Virginia Virginia wakes up while they’re there and she realizes she can’t see out of one eye Kenneth pulls Desna aside letting her know about Dean’s focus on killing again and tells her she needs to look after him Roller stops by and tells her about the woman He tried to go by her house and she shot at him Kenneth sees Polly in the hallway and she keeps things short Dean’s by Virginia’s side and she can senses something is wrong with Dean He’s really concerned someone is going to try to kill them again Virginia tells him that everything happens for a reason Desna goes by the woman’s house with Roller and managed to force her way in to talk to her The woman tells her that Mac Bloodstone and his wife Melba are very dirty She’s their accountant and launders the money in the casino When Desna tells her she’s an owner in the casino You’re getting robbed.” – Casino accountant she learns that the casino launders $2 million a month Uncle Daddy’s not far behind and he knows who tried to take Desna out Uncle Daddy says Clint tried to take Desna out and he gave Roller and Desna the information because they are still family Ann lets her know that this was just a “drive by” and nothing more Roller’s looking for Clint and runs into Toby Toby is in tears because Clint had Toby help him dump the motorcycle gear Roller comes by to let Desna know Clint really did try to kill her So they decide to stalk Clint later that using her mental issues to avoid intimacy and Desna that she needs to trust her friends Desna agrees and tells them about her plot involving the casino They all agree to help and they head to the are more expensive; however with the supporters club and visiting fans being the only ones allowed over there Giant Desna Chernihiv banners and security fences separate them as well The food huts are located at either end of the main stand The stadium has very little in terms of entertainment away from the game itself Most supporters gathered near the main gate before the game You have the option though to watch the pre-game warm-ups as well Seating is only available to visitors on one side of the pitch The sectors nearer the halfway line are more expensive check the weather beforehand as there is no roof The Yuri Gagarin stadium is located to the south of the centre it is better to take a public bus to the town who want to get a drink or a quick bite to eat before kick-off It is preferable to eat before or after the game in one of the many downtown restaurants Georgian restaurant ‘Buba’ and gastro pub ‘Robata’ sit in the main square around three kilometers from the ground providing great people-watching vantage points but there is a pleasant park to walk through before the game The central district also offers some pleasant churches to visit before the game Chernihiv will have a second team in the professional leagues this season so it is worth checking out if they are playing The Presidentskyi and the Riverside Park Hotels are both located within a kilometer of the stadium They are found in quite a picturesque location on the banks of the river Desna which provides similar facilities as elsewhere in the country Desna Chernihiv has some of the most loyal and loud supporters in the Ukrainian Premier League Desna supporters turn out in larger numbers than usual for the league The stadium was generally at 75% full but is packed for the visit of the big two It is an impressive level and puts them in the top four of the league With passionate fans on either side of the pitch The main singing section is not accessible for occasional supporters the Yuri Gagarin stadium is very accessible for supporters From the wide concourses to the good public transport access Several public buses run from the center along Shechenka Street towards the ground and you will be near the only entrance to the ground Taxi’s drop supporters off outside the ground as well The only problem with Chernihiv is that the train network doesn’t run in this part of the country Free parking places are in abundance around the ground We recommend parking in the neighboring park as it is relatively quiet and an easy escape after the game it is hard to get lost on a trip to Chernihiv Security carries out body checks on the ground entrance but it is nothing more than your typical procedure the toilets are not the most pleasant of experiences here Plans are afoot to open a new facility for supporters with more modern conveniences next season – we can only hope with plenty of space for people to move around Supporters with mobility needs will need to take their place on the first row as the steps up into the stands are quite severe the Chernihiv experience is a very affordable day out It provides enjoyment to people of all ages and the city is close enough to add to the trip five dollars will provide a visitor with a good experience Ticket prices range between one or two dollars while food and beverage start at a couple of dollars and t-shirts will only cost you an additional five dollars you can bring your own food for less money into the stadium It is worth buying tickets higher up in the corners as you have a great vantage point for the game itself It is possible to organize a tour of the venue beforehand and the souvenir shop is easily accessible by the main gate before match time The team is at a high point in its history and it is a pleasure to be kill Clint Jenn then learns Toby shot at Desna and Virginia and Uncle Daddy lied to Roller and killed a priest Ann’s at the beach contemplating calling her brother Henry she heads to the police to give them information about a dirty cop Roller calls Desna collect and she tells him she’s on her way to bail him out Benedict arrives telling Desna she needs to handle Ann immediately for going to the cops Desna meets with Ann about Ann going to the police Desna pleads with Ann to have Henry meet with Benedict He opens the door in a skunk suit and she breaks down crying Roller’s out of jail and he tells Desna they found his hair on Clint’s body They also found Desna’s hair and that spooks Desna She persuades Roller to flee out of the country they head to the party Roller’s throwing in her honor Dean’s there too and Desna asks him if he’s interested in taking a trip to Cuba Dean got back with Virginia and he’s staying with her Dean thinks something’s wrong with Desna and goes off to find Virginia Ann tells Desna her brother will meet with Benedict That is great news for Desna and the two share a big hug he learns Virginia doesn’t want to get married Polly brings Ken as her date to the party in case she runs into Joe She tells them they have a bond for life and she loves them Bryce and Uncle Daddy tell Roller that they will handle his recent legal issues But that mood changes when Jenn forces Uncle Daddy to reveal that Toby was the real shooter That results in Roller choking out Uncle Daddy When Bryce and Desna get Roller off Uncle Daddy Roller lets Uncle Daddy know he’s done with him Ann’s sitting at the bar when Joe sees her Both of them vent to one another about their bosses seemingly agreeing that they are underappreciated Roller gets second thoughts about heading ploy Desna changed into some lingerie and used her get-up to kidnap a woman that’s supposed to be the governor’s guest That allows them away inside the VIP area and grab Molly laced champagne Mac and Melba notice them and pick Polly for a sacrifice Their plan seems to be working with Desna in the presence of the Governor Polly learns from Virginia she met a guy named Eric Anne meets a man and surprisingly hits it off with him as they speak French to one another They pause when he says she called him Arlene Polly hangs with Joe as Virginia gets thrown out of the party with the pig following her The girls were able to circle-up and tell everyone they learned The governor’s getting payments to allow private prisons to be built they all recap what happened at the Eyes Wide Shut party Virginia also notices Anne actually had a really good time with a guy Anne blamed it being on Molly and says she felt like she was with Arlene Desna tells Anne they just need to be together They then
