Russian forces have significantly increased their fire activity in the southern sector of the front with the most active operations taking place in the Hulyaipole direction This was reported by the spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces Russian forces have greatly increased their fire activity in the southern direction especially intensifying their aerial strikes 14 airstrikes were recorded using 29 guided aerial bombs and 156 unguided rockets Both tactical and bomber aircraft of the Russian forces were actively targeting the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces as well as populated areas near the frontline,” Voloshyn said Russian forces used 56 unguided aerial rockets Guided bombs (KABs) were used to strike Stepnohirsk and other settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region Russian forces carried out more than 700 strikes using kamikaze drones “If we look at the overall figures for the Defense Forces of the 3,500 kamikaze drone attacks recorded yesterday That means one in five drones was deployed here in the southern sector,” the spokesperson clarified Voloshyn also reported that 17 assaults by Russian forces were recorded in the past day compared to the usual 8–10 per day last week “The most active area was the Hulyaipole direction where Russian forces tried to break through toward the village of Pryvilne but the Ukrainian Defense Forces held their ground and even attempted a counterattack to reclaim one of the positions that had been completely destroyed by Russian forces,” the spokesperson said Russian forces actively attempted to advance toward the settlements of Shevchenkove and Vilne Pole “Fierce fighting also continued in the Orikhiv direction Although fewer assault operations were carried out there Russian forces are regrouping and rotating units deploying specialized assault groups to frontline positions This suggests they are preparing to resume active operations any day now and attempt to break through our defensive line near Mali Shcherbaky Russian forces continue trying to break through and establish a foothold there,” Voloshyn reported adding that such a foothold would allow Russian forces to carry out artillery strikes on the suburbs of Zaporizhzhia and maintain fire control over the logistical routes leading to Orikhiv The spokesperson emphasized that Russian forces have so far failed to breach the defenses and are suffering heavy losses four assault attempts were made yesterday in the directions of Stepove and Lobkove with Russian forces trying to break through to Kamianske and capture the right bank of the Yanchekrak River “This foothold and the direction toward Kamianske located on the shore of the former Kakhovka Reservoir are currently a priority for Russian forces,” the spokesperson said Russian forces are not giving up attempts to gain control over the entire island area at the mouth of the Dnipro River “Taking advantage of the worsening weather conditions Russian forces have become more active in this direction They carry out three to four assault actions there daily; yesterday two such assaults were recorded,” the spokesperson said Russian forces lost 192 personnel in the south over the past day and about 35 units of motor vehicles and armored equipment Russian forces suffered quite significant losses yesterday,” Voloshyn stated When asked which southern region Russian forces are concentrating their efforts on for an offensive he responded that the focus is primarily on the Orikhiv and Hulyaipole directions “They (Russian forces) are currently concentrating their efforts on two directions: Orikhiv – the front section between Shcherbaky and the settlements of Lobkove and Stepove – where they have gathered a certain number of troops and resources to conduct assaults with small infantry groups; and the Hulyaipole direction – the front section including Shevchenkove and Pryvilne Russian forces are trying to break through to threaten Hulyaipole from the east and maintain fire control over the communication routes from Pokrovske in the Dnipropetrovsk region toward the administrative border with the Zaporizhzhia region These two directions remain among the most threatening,” Voloshyn reported He also noted that the Russian army is not experiencing a shortage of weapons or manpower Russian forces do not appear to be facing any particular shortages and continuously run logistical operations to supply ammunition and certain weapons Although we try to destroy and control those routes and carry out strikes They no longer concentrate everything in one place — they disperse their weapons They do everything to avoid being destroyed,” Voloshyn noted Russian invaders again attacked Zaporizhia with a large number of attack drones the Russian invaders struck the city's civilian infrastructure and an infrastructure facility were hit by the enemy Fedorov reported that the number of wounded had risen to 29 What is important to understand is that over the past 24 hours the Russians have launched 589 strikes on 16 settlements in the Zaporizhia region The Russian army carried out 17 air strikes on Zaliznychne 349 UAVs of various modifications attacked Zaporizhzhia 214 artillery attacks were carried out on the territory of Kamyanske local authorities received 142 reports of damage to apartments This short video shows how the Zaporozhye people try to find something that survived in the morning against the backdrop of “their burnt lives.” But is it supposed to be like this? Speaking on national TV, Dmytro Lykhovyi, spokesperson for the Tavria group of forces, said Moscow's troops had attempted assaults "from two different fronts." they attacked from the village of Reshetylivske in the direction of Huliaipole.," he said "Some reports said that it could be a major offensive with the formation of an offensive group it is a continuation of the tactics of small assault actions because the total numbers of the Russian group in Zaporizhzhia Oblast has not changed in terms of the number of troops." In its morning report on July 29, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said Russian forces continue in their attempts to dislodge Ukrainian troops from positions in the Orikhiv and Huliaipole directions in Zaporizhzhia Oblast The General Staff's report named battles near Mala Tokmachka Earlier on July 29, Lykhovii denied reports that Russia had made gains in other areas of Zaporizhzhia Oblast The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said on July 28 that according to geolocated footage Russia has likely "seized all of Robotyne." Lykhovii disputed the claim in a comment to the Kyiv Independent saying that the situation in the sector was "without any major changes." The village of Robotyne, which lies some 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of Orikhiv and 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) southeast of Zaporizhzhia, was liberated by Ukraine during its counteroffensive in the summer of 2023 and has been on the front line since We are the news team of the Kyiv Independent We are here to make sure our readers get quick essential updates about the events in Ukraine Feel free to contact us via email with feedback and news alerts Ukraine claimed Wednesday that Russian forces has carried out nearly 400 attacks on nine settlements in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region over the past 24 hours head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration said Russian troops launched 14 airstrikes on the towns of Hulyaipole The village of Novodarivka was also struck by multiple launch rocket systems while 161 artillery strikes hit seven other settlements Authorities received 13 reports of damage to residential buildings speaking as the Ukraine war is just weeks away from its third anniversary There was no immediate comment from Russia on the claims Today's print edition Home Delivery Unlike during his first term in the White House President-elect Donald Trump appears determined to keep many of his campaign promises His Cabinet nominations — from the Kremlin-friendly Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence to the conspiracy-loving vaccine skeptic Robert F as secretary of health and human services — confirm Trump’s commitment to a scorched-earth campaign against American institutions and perceived “enemies within.” And his victory speech suggests that he is serious about “stopping wars” — beginning with the one in Ukraine.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); }); Trump has long asserted that he would end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office There has been much speculation about the settlement Trump has in mind and the scenarios all have one thing in common: Ukraine’s dismemberment it is worth considering the grim history of territorial partition In a time of both misinformation and too much information quality journalism is more crucial than ever.By subscribing Your subscription plan doesn't allow commenting. The Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed seven Russian equipment and personnel concentration areas Moscow's forces are pushing towards two towns in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region where fighting intensified this week after several months of a stagnant front Russian state media reported Sunday.  Russian-installed official in the region Vladimir Rogov said offensive actions were concentrated around two towns: Orikhiv around 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Ukrainian-controlled regional capital Zaporizhzhia especially in two directions: Orikhiv and Hulyaipole," Rogov was quoted as saying by the Ria Novosti news agency.  He said there was active fighting in those areas the Ukrainian army said "more than 15 settlements were affected by artillery fire" in Zaporizhzhia.  Rogov announced a "local offensive" around Orikhiv and said the Russian army had taken control of the village of Lobkove He also said this week that fighting has "sharply increased" in the southern region.  the Russian army said its troops held "offensive actions" in the Zaporizhzhia region and claimed to have "taken more advantageous lines and positions." The front in southern Ukraine has been considerably quieter recently than in the east with Moscow withdrawing from the major city of Kherson in November.  Russia claims to have annexed the Zaporizhzhia region along with three other Ukrainian regions but does not control it in its entirety.  While Moscow controls large swathes of the southern part of the region its main city Zaporizhzhia and northern part did not fall to Russian forces.  Russia has vowed to push Ukrainian forces out of them Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent." Ukrainain artillery in return struck Polohy It’s unclear what Ukrainian mechanized forces may have moved into Hulyaipole in possible anticipation of an offensive toward Melitopol A drive on Melitopol could require more than just a couple heavy brigades Ukraine’s previous counteroffensives—around Kyiv in March and then around Kharkiv and Kherson six months later—each involved at least half-a-dozen heavy brigades To liberate Melitopol then turn right and free southern Kherson Oblast on the left bank of the Dnipro River a Ukrainian force would have to advance 200 miles and defeat a dozen or more Russian brigades and regiments But even if these forces can’t risk moving to react to a possible Ukrainian attack northeast of Melitopol they still would be in the path of that attack as it hooked toward the mouth of the Dnipro and the land bridge with Crimea the Ukrainian armed forces will need to concentrate a lot of heavy forces in order for the Zaporizhzhia left hook to succeed There’s a good chance the Russians will see them coming together—and try to disrupt their assembly with artillery the spoiling bombardments may already have begun The National Pavilion of Ukraine at the EXPO 2025 in Osaka presented a publication from the Kharkiv printing house Faktor-Druk created after it was hit by a Russian missile strike on May 23 This printed product features stories from Ukrainian relocations Kramtekhcenter continues to operate in Kramatorsk One of the largest investors in the Ukrainian economy is even opening new production facilities during the war The enterprise Impexmash was able to restore its operations after being destroyed And the casting and mechanical plant in Pokrovsk has become an example of the resilience of industry in front-line areas The visual representation of the business stories for this publication was done by illustrators Ivan Kypibida and Yulia Vus with the layout designed by Marta Pokhodzhay Faktor-Druk is the largest full-cycle printing complex in Ukraine Every third book published in the country was printed by this printing house almost half of the company's technological lines were destroyed the full production cycle is Novoandriivka No combat engagements have been recorded in the Prydniprovsky and Siversk directions since the beginning of the day The operation in the Kursk region continues Ukrainian soldiers repelled two attacks by the Russian troops today and four firefights are currently underway The Russians launched 320 artillery strikes including 10 from multiple launch rocket systems Over the previous day, from February 15 to 16, the Russian army lost 1730 soldiers in the war against Ukraine The Ukrainian Armed Forces also destroyed 84 armored personnel carriers Moscow's military offensive in the Zaporizhzhia region in southeastern Ukraine is concentrated in two directions Russian state media reported on Sunday."The front is mobile especially in two directions - Orekhov and Hulyaipole," Russian-installed official in the region Vladimir Rogov told RIA Novosti news agency.Rogov further said that active clashes are taking place in these areas claiming: “The initiative is in our hands.”On Saturday the Russian Foreign Ministry said that as a result of offensive operations units of the Eastern Military District have taken “more advantageous lines and positions.”Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov on Friday also told a press briefing in Moscow that the army captured the Lobkovoye settlement located in the region.Zaporizhzhia were attached to Moscow through a presidential decree last October after Moscow-backed referendums which have been widely rejected by the international community ‘We really need help from Heaven for this war,’ says Gennadiy Mokhnenko whose followers tread in dangerous territory to support those still living near the front lines This article was published more than 1 year ago Pastor Gennadiy and his followers begin each day by singing a few alleluias followed by a soft prayer at their base in the industrial district of the city of Zaporizhzhia each closed with red-and-white “God loves you” tape Soon their small convoy of chaplains and volunteers begins a bumpy and dangerous journey toward the front line “Go with God,” they murmur to each other at a roadside stop to pull on their bulletproof vests and helmets before they drive into the hot zone as Gennadiy Mokhnenko and his followers are known is one of the few volunteer groups brave enough to still approach this part of the battlefront to deliver aid to civilians as a major Ukrainian counteroffensive aims to drive the invading Russian troops out of the country An artillery shell narrowly missed the group Tuesday as they distributed aid in the nearby town of Orikhiv The area is one of the main mustering points for the counteroffensive and thus a frequent target of Russian fire a Russian air strike was reported in the area just 30 minutes after the volunteers – and The Globe and Mail team – left the district Pastor Gennadiy says the Chaplains’ Battalion which has no actual affiliation with the Ukrainian army has about 90 members delivering assistance on three parts of the front line That number is bolstered by three of the 36 children that Pastor Gennadiy adopted before the war – when he was best known for rescuing troubled kids off the streets of the now-shattered city of Mariupol and helping them turn their lives around at his Pilgrim Republic rehabilitation centre We do all that we can to help people,” he said Pastor Gennadiy achieved a small measure of fame in North America five years ago as the subject of the documentary Almost Holy, which followed the Protestant preacher and his Church of Good Changes as he waged something of a vigilante war against Mariupol’s drug epidemic Now his city and his country have much larger problems so many different things,” the muscle-bound preacher said Pastor Gennadiy alternates between optimistically predicting a Ukrainian victory – and a return home after the liberation of Mariupol – and saying he and his team will need divine intervention just to survive the day “We really need help from Heaven for this war Because right now we will go under shooting Wednesday’s convoy was delivering boxes of dry goods as well as fresh fruit purchased along the way Evidence that Hulyaipole is within range of Russian artillery is everywhere largest school and central market have all been destroyed by direct hits Locals say the hospital was struck on Monday an estimated 3,000 of the town’s prewar population of 13,000 improbably remain here ignoring a long-standing official request to evacuate three men and a child with an apparent mental disability gathered on a dirt road as the Chaplains’ Battalion arrived Prayers were said as the food was passed out but the remaining residents can’t imagine being anywhere else “I was born here and I will not leave – as much as everyone is trying to make me I just want to live in my own house,” said Olena Yalanska She was standing in front of a row of small houses that all appeared to have been damaged by shelling and gunfire Another woman in the crowd said the delivery of 60 small boxes of food was the first aid they’d received in a month Pastor Gennadiy knows what it’s like to feel cut off he received a phone call from a police officer who told him Russian troops would soon surround Mariupol “It was a competition between the Russian tanks and my convoy,” he recalled you have a last 40 minutes to evacuate your orphanage because the Russian army is coming from Crimea very quickly and they want to blockade the city.’ … On the way Because they are very close to stopping your convoy.’ ” After escaping Mariupol – and finding places for most of the Pilgrim Republic’s 100-plus residents in Europe – Pastor Gennadiy found himself looking for a way to help the war effort He sees the Chaplains’ Battalion as a natural continuation of the work he did in Mariupol I’ve worked with homeless children many years “So maybe I’m just still helping homeless people.” Several of his fellow clergymen quickly signed up to the Chaplains’ Battalion as have dozens of admiring volunteers – including a Japanese journalist who converted to Pastor Gennadiy’s church – and three of his adopted sons “I’m back with my family,” said 37-year-old Mykola Karpov who lived with two alcoholic parents until he was adopted by Pastor Gennadiy at the age of 15 Karpov served in the Ukrainian army early in the war but was discharged after he was struck in the head by shrapnel from a grenade last May he has been doing aid missions with the Chaplains’ Battalion The Chaplains’ Battalion has united people of disparate backgrounds: The pastor's adoptive children fellow clergymen and volunteers from abroad Seven of the pastor’s other adopted sons are serving in the military – two of them were fighting near Hulyaipole this week Pastor Gennadiy admits it’s tricky to keep track of the rest of his kids In addition to his 29 adopted sons and seven adopted daughters he has three biological children – and his family is still expanding “I’m like the parents in Home Alone – it is difficult for me to count my children,” he said with a hearty laugh during a roadside stop on the way to Hulyaipole pausing to show a photo on his phone that he took at the wedding of one of his soldier sons this week “I need to check my list because last week I had two more grandchildren and I think I must check how many I have completely who was himself the child of a home plagued by alcoholism established Pilgrim Republic in the late 1990s and said he began adopting some of the orphans who lived there when it became obvious they had nowhere else to go While he has been criticized for his methods – in Almost Holy he refers to Pilgrim Republic as “half a prison” and says he sometimes acts as a parent sometimes as a police officer – he was a folk hero in prewar Mariupol because he was the only one willing to work with the city’s troubled teens Karpov said religion was always a central theme at Pilgrim Republic though it wasn’t forced on any of the kids He said he only embraced religion years later when he was fighting in the trenches of Ukraine’s Donbas region during the eight-year proxy war that preceded last year’s full-scale invasion we talked about faith and studied the Bible but I was 50-50 about it,” he said as the convoy accelerated through heavily damaged Orikhiv “I believe that every person has a moment in their life when they start believing Mine was a very difficult one – we were ambushed Pastor Gennadiy visits the grave of a member of his church family Pastor Gennadiy’s charisma and fame help him navigate through Ukrainian army checkpoints allowing him to reach places like Orikhiv and Hulyaipole that are closed to most other volunteer groups Army veteran who joined this week’s trip to Hulyaipole It was Senator Brewer’s third aid convoy with Pastor Gennadiy he donated a set of VHF radios to the battalion to help its members stay in touch with each other in places where there are no mobile phone signals “I kind of got hooked when I saw Gennadiy in the field because they’re the ones who get left behind Some of these people have been stuck in their basements for a year now “Yesterday we had artillery landing all around us I spent 36 years in the military and eight tours in Afghanistan and by the third and final aid drop in Hulyaipole – at the city’s main bomb shelter which after almost 16 months of war is now equipped with shower capsules and laundry machines as well as satellite WiFi and a wood-burning stove – Pastor Gennadiy decided it was time to relax a little a member of the Chaplains’ Battalion from Mariupol – and a hero in his own right for repeatedly driving an evacuation bus in and out of the besieged city last year – pulled out a saxophone and leaned into an angry version of Let My People Go as staff at the shelter sank into plastic chairs and tapped their feet to the unfamiliar sounds of music and good cheer on the front line Leaning against one of the cement walls and watching the scene It was almost as if he’d adopted another huge Earlier this year, a Canadian sniper in Ukraine, codenamed Teflon, told The Globe and Mail about his role in
