Amarillo residents will put on their finest gowns and tuxedos
and gather for one of the city’s biggest parties of the year: the Amarillo Symphony Ball
in the Heritage Room of the Amarillo Civic Center
represents the 60thanniversary of this long-standing social and civic event
Primarily a fundraiser for the Amarillo Symphony – which itself celebrates its 90thseason this year and its second under the baton of conductor Jacomo Rafael Bairos – the annual Ball brings in as much as $80,000 per year for the Amarillo Symphony Guild and its programs
It has become something of a coming-out party for the Symphony’s Belles and Beaux
young men and women who serve as volunteer ushers for performances during their senior year of high school
“The Ball has definitely evolved,” says Robyn Rhodes
who co-chairs this year’s celebration with Teresa Hoard
“It grew to be a huge black-tie event in the Panhandle
the idea for the Ball developed in early 1955 during the reign of conductor A
Jack SoRelle returned from a meeting in Denver where other city symphonies had reported on their successes with black-tie fundraising projects
the Amarillo Junior League had sponsored a charity ball for some years
The women’s service organization decided to discontinue their event and reintroduce it on behalf of the Symphony
the inaugural Symphony Ball took place in the fall of 1955 at the Aviatrix Club
a nightclub owned by Carlton Scales on Route 66 near the airport
the Aviatrix had transformed over the years into the Panhandle’s most elaborate ballroom
and the Dorsey Brothers were regulars there
Tickets to that first ball were $10 a couple
Participants enjoyed a style show by local department store Colbert’s and raised $2,000 for the newly formed Symphony Guild
The event’s modest success continued the next year
as the Aviatrix Club hosted the 1956 Ball and saw a boost in attendance
in 1957 the Guild elected to move the event to the Amarillo Country Club and spread attendees across more than one dance floor
The first themed Ball took place a year later
Deemed “Music of the World,” the Guild decorated the Country Club’s main ballroom like the United Nations and designed each additional room to represent individual countries
That event took in $6,000 and the Symphony Ball began to gain momentum
The Symphony celebrated its 35thyear in 1959
and records indicate that was the season the Symphony Ball truly came into its own
Tickets for that event jumped to $50 per couple for the main ballroom
with a discounted $25 for other rooms at the Country Club
“It established the Ball as the social highlight of the season,” Kitsman says
“It was always in November or December those first few years
and people considered it the start of the social season in Amarillo
The Symphony predates the Lone Star Ballet or the Amarillo Opera
so it was really the first of that kind of thing – the first big social scene.”
Newspaper and magazine ads from those days reflect the civic prominence of the event
[Amarillo department stores] White & Kirk and Blackburn Brothers and Colbert’s would do big style shows,” Kitsman says
“They put out full-page ads asking ‘What are you wearing to the Ball?’ These were remarkable ads
As the Ball became more elegant and successful as a fundraiser
planners for the event became more ambitious
in 1961 – this sounds like a logistical nightmare – started with a dinner at the Amarillo Club
and then they had balls at the Amarillo Country Club and the Tascosa Country Club,” Kitsman says
“There were two city buses they named ‘Samson’ and ‘Delilah’ that ran from the Amarillo Club to the two country clubs taking guests back and forth
the growing popularity of high-society debutante balls across the state – including the Jewel Ball overseen by the Women’s Symphony League of Austin – encouraged some in the community to push for the local event to take on more of an introductory role for the young women of Amarillo’s prominent families
“There was some controversy about it back then,” co-chair Teresa Hoard says
“A lot of the women did not want it to turn into a ‘deb’ ball.”
“It was talked about in the Guild at the time
but they wanted it to have a different name” from anything referring to debutantes
“There was a lot of resistance to turning it into a debutante season because that becomes extremely expensive for the families of the ‘debs,’” Kitsman continues
Glenn Newbold introduced a youth organization called “Symphony Sweethearts.” By 1964
these had been renamed the Symphony Belles
and were presented by their parents at the first symphony of the season
these young women were involved only in a service capacity
helping distribute programs or candies to concertgoers
he Belles enjoyed their own socials and teas
but had nothing to do with the Ball itself
That’s because the event – which had originated at a nightclub – had a reputation as an adult party where alcohol was typically served
“It was thought to be inappropriate for them to be there,” Kitsman says
The event continued to grow in civic importance
Each year’s Ball raised more money than the last and increased attendance meant a constant search for new venues to contain the crowd
“It just kept getting larger,” Kitsman says
“One year it was at the old White & Kirk’s department store building downtown
A couple of them were held at airport hangers.” High-profile musicians like the Peter Duchin Orchestra came to Amarillo to perform for the event
Before it became a fixture at the Amarillo Civic Center
one memorable Symphony Ball in the ’80s even took place on the unfinished top floor of Amarillo National Bank’s new Plaza Two building
fundraising had begun to decline in the late 1970s
the pressure to add the debutante aspect to the Symphony Ball – along with the Guild’s continued desire to introduce more and more people to the Symphony – combined to produce one of the biggest evolutions in the history of the event
“The Guild realized they could bring in more money if the Belles came to the Ball,” Hoard says
the Symphony Belles were presented for the first time at the Symphony Ball
this formal presentation became the centerpiece of the gala
Tuxedo-clad fathers walked their daughters across the stage as an announcer read the high school seniors’ names
the Ball would divide into two distinct ballrooms
The young people would attend a separate event without alcohol
“They catered to the older people,” says Rhodes
“They had a separate band for them and another band for the younger people.”
Though the idea of a male aspect of the youth program was floated as early as 1969 in the Symphony Guild
the organization only decided to add Beaux to the Ball in 1991
the Guild required nominees for both genders to attend orientation meetings and other events to train them to serve as ushers and greeters at Amarillo Symphony concerts
these young men and women also must participate in annual community service projects
and their parents have to be members of the Symphony Guild and season ticket holders
“It creates a sense of a symphony family,” Kitsman says of the enduring popularity of the Belles and Beaux program today
“You see the legacy of the impact of the symphony on so many people and on Amarillo itself
It’s the hope that it introduces a new generation to an appreciation of symphonic music.”
Richard McKay and Sam Lovelady have emceed the Belles and Beaux presentation
reading the names of each young man or woman as they are introduced to the partygoers
McKay and Lovelady have become as much a part of the tradition as the event itself
“Nancy Baay was the chairman at the time.” Baay
had grown tired of incorrect pronunciations of the family’s surname – it sounds like byerather than bay
“Her only criteria was that I be able to pronounce her daughter’s last name right
Christy + Associates Certified Public Accountants
“My third-grade teacher told me if I stuck with reading
it would eventually pay off,” Lovelady jokes
I get in front of a microphone and read a list of names.”
the two have begun presenting their second generation of Symphony Belles and Beaux
Lovelady’s children passed through the program more than a decade ago
and next year McKay looks forward to calling his granddaughter’s name
“I’ve told them I’d like to stick around at least until then,” he says
“It’s been great fun seeing my kids and friends’ kids every year,” Lovelady says
“I have to confess there are fewer of my kids’ friends in it now
I tell them every year that I can be fired with no hard feelings.”
The Symphony Guild isn’t about to fire the duo
as the task of accurately pronouncing several dozen names can be a challenge
the influx of international professionals to Amarillo has brought a cosmopolitan flair to the roster of Belles and Beaux
“[Pronouncing unfamiliar names] provides a challenge for this West Texas accent,” Lovelady admits
and some of the more difficult names are doctors’ kids anyway
I’ve enjoyed doing it as long as I know a few [of the participants].”
Belles and Beaux are also introduced before the first symphony concert of the year
and McKay and Lovelady take full advantage of the opportunity to learn participants’ names before they walk across the stage
“The mothers tell the girls ‘You’re here to learn how to curtsey,’” he says
‘You’re here for one reason: to make sure we get your name correct.’”
“That rehearsal is very important to me,” says Lovelady
“We tell the kids this is their chance to make sure we get this right
I come up with a phonetic spelling if I have to
You feel like it’s their moment in the spotlight and you want to do it perfect.”
Lovelady says the moment a parent or guardian escorts a child across the stage can occasionally make for a memorable occurrence
“I’ve seen twins on either arm of their father,” he says
“Sometimes there’s a touching story – maybe a parent has died and so a friend or family member steps in
the Ball introduces 35 Symphony Belles and 26 Beaux
While the event’s founders initially resisted the debutante element
the Guild acknowledges that it has been a major contribution to the event’s fundraising success
Average Ball attendance averages around 700 to 800 partygoers
Some years have ballooned to as many as a thousand people
“It does have that debutante element,” McKay says
This is more grounded.” He appreciates how the annual service project teaches the value of community commitment
as does the participants’ duties as ushers at the Symphony
“The kids understand it’s a privilege to be able to do that,” he says
Hoard suggests that the event plays another important role as an opportunity for young people to refine their social skills
“It’s good for seniors to dress up and be exposed to the Symphony
but it’s also good for them to learn courtesy and etiquette skills,” she says
“More and more you have them spending so much time alone or with an electronic device that they may be losing opportunities to learn how to communicate with people
There’s nothing wrong with learning proper etiquette for being out in public and being responsible for your behavior.”
The 2015 Symphony Belles and Beaux received extensive etiquette instruction
and Hoard anticipates that the program will continue to emphasize it in the future
“The Belles and Beaux are a big draw,” Rhodes says
“It’s such a nice touch to present them at this event
They are seniors and growing up and heading on to work or college or both
So many people are there to support their friends and their children.” She echoes the opinion of so many regulars at the event
“I think it is the most fun party we have in Amarillo.”
The theme for this year’s Ball is “Diamond Jubilee” in recognition of the event’s 60thyear
it features a champagne reception that honors all past chairs and Symphony Guild presidents
The versatile nine-piece Dallas-based band Cuveé
Though earlier incarnations worked hard to keep young people away from the grown-up festivities
the 2015 Symphony Ball has invited younger siblings of Belles and Beaux to attend
as long as they are older than 14 and accompanied by a parent
Just like the Symphony Ball has evolved from its beginnings in 1955
Hoard speculates it will continue to change in the years to come
“We have an ad hoc fundraising committee that is always studying our options,” she says
“But we feel there is still a place for this because there just aren’t that many black-tie events anymore
[The Symphony Ball] is a tradition that hopefully we can keep going.”
The annual Symphony Ball has come a long way from that first get-together at the Aviatrix Club
“The Ball is still a very elegant affair,” Kitsman says
“The Symphony has had lots of transitional periods and so has the Guild and the Symphony Ball
It’s done a good job of changing with the times.”
Any club, from top teams like Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona to lower-league and semi-pro sides, can produce a terrible kit. ESPN IllustrationAfter compiling and ranking the best 101 soccer kits ever
it was only fair that we once again enlisted ESPN's soccer writers and editors from around the globe to help rank the worst designs ever to grace a football pitch
no matter how much you love to loathe them
which is right on the limit of how many abhorrent designs we can handle in one place
we have taken into account kits from club and national teams and have considered their home
translates to "Straight to the point." So we'll get right to it here: this kit is awful
You know when your printer starts to run out of ink and the document ends up with hideous lines across it
that's exactly what this orange-and-blue striped mess by Adidas looks like
They did reach the Champions League quarterfinals wearing this
as none of the Bastia players could see each other
Bastia's away kit the next season was also a camo design
Mexican sports brand Pirma designed a shirt that resembles the screen of a laptop after it crashes under the weight of too many spam pop-ups
including the pièce de résistance -- a huge ad featuring a construction worker across the stomach for a cement company
The colour of this kit, described as "lightning pink" by manufacturer Le Coq Sportif
was meant to make the players more visible to each other
It was also inspired by the club's kit from the 1890-91 season
when the Toffees won their first of nine league titles
Midfielder Leon Osman admitted it "caused a bit of a stir in the dressing room" and was a "brave" design
while the club's chief executive Robert Elstone said at the time: "We want this new kit to help take Everton to the next level." They won four away games that season
The red-and-blue shoulders against a black template on this kit
released for the Copa America Centenario tournament
was something of a departure from the predominantly blue or red kits the United States usually wore for their road colours
hosted the tournament and finished in fourth place ahead of some South American heavyweights
Someone at Nike loves a gradient effect almost as much as they love colours with names like "electric green," which sounds like a scuzzy Los Angeles rock club
This kit is as much a cry for help as anything else
but it is not even the worst Nike gradient design on this list (stay tuned)
It's almost fitting that Inter had one of their worst seasons in recent memory in this kit
exiting the Europa League in the group stage and going through three managers in the process
Pink and purple is a bold look that few would try to pull off
The club had previously dabbled with the colour combination as an away strip in 2014 but decided to really up the stakes for the Singapore Cup two years ago by having manufacturers Lotto slap the pink in the middle of the purple and adding a floral trim
They reached the final of the competition that year
presumably because the kit distracted their opponents
Mexican sports brand Eescord threw everything they had at this kit
including a super-sized club badge and name across the torso
They also worked two images of their own star logo into the design
they put the team's nickname "Rayos" ("Lightning") on the other shoulder
Rarely has one player defined a kit as much as Gareth Southgate
dressed in grey with hands on head after his miss against Germany in a penalty shootout that led to the Three Lions exiting the Euro '96 semifinals on home soil
This remains the only time England have ever worn "indigo blue," as manufacturers Umbro dubbed it at the time
in a change from the traditional red away kit
The colour was chosen to go well with jeans
but it didn't work at all in its primary purpose as a football kit
Stoke City must have been anxious to ensure that everyone who saw them play would remember them
Why else would manufacturers Asics emblazon "STOKE" in giant
shadowed font akin to an early Windows screensaver right across the torso
the lettering was so massive that it was hard to see the whole word all at once
The first of several outlandish novelty concept kits in this ranking
with Spanish lower-league team CD Palencia suiting up like figures in a medical school textbook
This outfit was chosen to show the players were willing to "give their skin" for the cause
It was created by Juan Francisco Martin who
is a specialist in the area of strange Spanish kits
Palencia won the playoffs to earn promotion to the third tier
When the South Korean Football Federation released an updated badge with a sleek new tiger logo, they needed a kit to match. Or so they thought -- those of us who witnessed Hull City's 1992 kit (No. 33) know that's a terrible idea. What the Korean team got in the end was a shirt that looked like something "101 Dalmatians" villain Cruella de Vil would wear
The kit was released earlier this year and hasn't been worn yet
Would you buy your team's shirt if there was a chance you might spot yourself on it
that was the angle Corinthians were going for this season with their third alternate kit
It superimposed images of times their fans "invaded" other towns before big games: "A Invasão Corinthiana" ("The Corinthians Invasion") during the 1976 Brazil Championship finals against Fluminense at the Maracana and during the 2000 and 2012 FIFA Club World Cups
Most clubs are synonymous with certain colours in the eyes of their fans
the players have to be wearing black and yellow when they play in front of the fans in the Sudtribune
in 2006 when Nike unceremoniously changed the home colours to yellow-and-white stripes
so much so that a new rule was written into the club statutes ensuring the team's colours would be black and yellow forevermore
English lower-league side Bedale are no strangers to a novelty outfit
Bedale seized the opportunity to get everyone talking about their kits
A percentage of every sale goes to Prostate Cancer UK
When Puma decked out the Cameroon national team for their 2004 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in what was essentially a footballing version of a unitard
There's no obvious reason to do so except to antagonise FIFA
which -- coming two years after The Indomitable Lions had their wrists slapped for sporting basketball-style sleeveless shirts -- is exactly what it did
fined Cameroon $154,000 and docked six points from their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign
asserting that FIFA rules required jersey and shorts to be separate garments
Ever heard the phrase "if you want something done well
That's what German gambling company Faber Lotto-Service did with local team Bochum in 1997
Not satisfied with Reebok's and Reusch's timid designs
Faber posed as a sports manufacturer and created their own colourful shirts for Bochum's first foray into the UEFA Cup
The fans absolutely hated Faber's rainbow logo
and the collective anger when the shirt was unveiled in front of them was audible
The black shorts and hooped socks only add to the madness
When Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider he turned into Spider-Man
When Atletico Madrid were bitten by the Columbia Pictures bug in 2003 they turned their kit into this mess
complete with giant spider logo and web covering the entire front of the jersey
The deal with the Hollywood studio required the shirt sponsor to change from match to match whenever there was a new movie to promote
"Spider-Man 2" stands up pretty well compared with other titles
such as "White Chicks," "Hitch" and "Anaconda," that Atletico's players helped to publicise
We will give Spanish second-division side La Hoya Lorca credit for doing something parents have been trying to do for years: get kids interested in broccoli
They chose the divisive vegetable on account of it being the region of Murcia's most successful export
This was actually their second broccoli-themed shirt
after winning the third division title in one the year before
As a result the team was dubbed "El Brócoli Mecánico" ("The Clockwork Broccoli")
was released to commemorate International Rock 'N' Roll Day
itself created to mark the anniversary of Live Aid
the world-famous music benefit concert staged in 1985
Brasilia is Brazil's home of rock 'n' roll
hence why the club thought it appropriate to release this shirt complete with skull and crossbones and the logo of seminal punk group The Misfits
In the summer of 1995, Chelsea signing Ruud Gullit posed in his new club's home jersey worn over a long-sleeve office shirt
perhaps in an attempt to convince people that "doing a Gullit" (wearing football shirts over work attire) was the new "doing a Cantona" (turning up your collar)
and neither did this horrid grey-and-orange away shirt
which Gullit wore on his Chelsea debut in a preseason friendly at Gillingham
According to the club's kit man at the time, Terry Byrne, the idea behind the design was to avoid clashing with any opponent's home or away uniforms
eliminating the need for a third alternate kit
although there is a reason no other team played in grey and orange
which is why the lettering across the front is straight out of Space Invaders
won the Eastern Conference and MLS Supporters' Shield in their first season
but they never reached those heights again and eventually dissolved in 2002
Lower-league English club Scunthorpe's sponsor at the time was the adventure park Pleasure Island
based in the nearby beach town of Cleethorpes
and this design is reminiscent of the results of riding a roller coaster after eating too much cotton candy
It's a shame that manufacturer Alan Ward Sports didn't extend the pattern to the socks
which would have really topped off this bold look
Lokomotiv finished sixth in the season they sported this kit
In July 2016, Hearts unveiled this away kit under the headline "Hearts reveal stunning new away kit," and they were right: people were stunned
This is a uniform that pays homage to the club's early days -- in particular the fifth Earl of Rosebery
who was British prime minister from March 1894 to June 1895 as well as the first Earl of Midlothian and honorary president of both the Scottish Football Association and Hearts
His horse racing colours of rose and primrose yellow were adopted by the Scotland national team in 1900
But there's a big reason football kits don't look like this anymore: people didn't really take football that seriously
the earl's family remain Hearts fans to this day
Pep Guardiola actually left Barca shortly after this kit was unveiled
Celtic finished third in the Scottish Premier League (which is traditionally a two-team battle at the top between Celtic and Rangers) and were knocked out in the semifinals of the Scottish Cup and in the quarterfinals of the League Cup
they exited the UEFA Cup 5-2 on aggregate at the hands of Swiss minnows Neuchatel Xamax
But the worst thing about the 1991-92 season was this kit. A lime green base, jagged-edged white middle section and what looks like a grass-stained patch across the chest and shoulders, Hoops fans still hate it to this day
partly because the sponsor has the blue and red of archrivals Rangers
presumably because the thief saw how it looked in broad daylight
Respected Basque artist Dario Urzay designed this kit to commemorate the club's return to European competition and, according to the Guardian
it was inspired by the art in Bilbao's world-famous Guggenheim Museum
Rather than evoke the world of avant-garde art
it looks more like a close-up of some coral
The kit was worn during preseason in 2004 but was not seen again as Bilbao reverted to their traditional red-and-white stripes
This drabbest of grey kits, which looks like the carpet of an insurance company's regional office, has gained legendary status after it was famously ditched at half-time in a match Manchester United were losing 3-0 at Southampton
That already makes it worthy of our list before we learned of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's reasoning that the players couldn't see each other
There might be some truth to this incredible excuse as defender Gary Neville
revealed years later that they actually had an eye coach: Professor Gail Stephenson from Liverpool University
"We used to do eye exercises before every game," Neville told Sky Sports earlier this year
"Sir Alex had been told by Gail that grey was the worst possible colour to spot players in with fans in the background
We had a full set of kit ready to put on at half-time."
Neville's United teammate Lee Sharpe was not so sure it was down to the kit, telling the Guardian: "I'm not sure if any of the players mentioned the kit
Personally I felt that we were playing really poorly
and that we couldn't really blame anything or anyone but ourselves."
United switched to their blue-and-white away kit at the break and "won" the second half 1-0
but the grey kit was binned immediately with a final record of no wins from four games played
The Colorado Caribous may have been a short-lived franchise over 40 years ago
but they have a lasting legacy in the form of their extraordinary jerseys
The team's home and away kits both comprised a white
brown and tan colour scheme that featured tasseled faux-leather fringing across the chest and back
Even just writing that sentence feels weird
If the kit looks as if it came straight off the ranch
The design was the brainchild of Jim Guercio
a recording studio in a converted barn on a property outside of Denver that was frequented by the likes of Elton John and Chicago
Guercio was a marketing genius who knew making the team look as ridiculous as possible would increase awareness
The team's coaches didn't get away without it either
as they were made to wear the hats and cowboy boots on the sideline during games
which is our pick as the worst of the two kits

As Russia's war against Ukraine is set to soon enter its third year
Ukraine is getting desperate for more troops
so much so that military recruiters have confiscated people's passports and even tried to enlist a mentally disabled man
per a new report on recruiting efforts citing lawyers
The taxi driver from the Ukrainian city of Kitsman who declined to give his name out of fear of retribution told the Times that military recruiters seized his passport and only returned it to him days later after he showed up to a medical screening
Local residents told the new outlet that recruiters from Kitsman have gotten a reputation as "people snatchers."
The Times said it spoke to more than two dozen lawyers
conscripts and family members of conscripts about the strong-arm strategies by military recruiters
Attorneys and activists told the news outlet that the aggressive tactics — which have allegedly included physical force — exceed the limits of recruiters' authority and are blatantly illegal in some cases
Ukraine provides exemptions from the draft under certain conditions
Ukrainian recruiters tried to send a 36-year-old mentally disabled man who is on medication for depression to military training
was cleared for duty with certain restrictions and summoned for mobilization
"They summoned to the army a person with an official diagnosis of 'mental disability' from childhood," Tetiana Fefchak
an attorney who was able to block Harasym's conscription
Fefchak said that instances of aggression by recruiters have ramped up "massively in the last six months."
Some Ukrainian men have turned to the courts to fight what they allege to be wrongful draft notices and forced mobilization
which reported that in November alone there were more than 200 court decisions related to mobilization
"The military feel their impunity," Fefchak told the Times
Ukraine's Ministry of Defense responded to the accusations of forced conscription in a statement to the Times
saying: "Changes to the legislation relating to mobilization and demobilization processes are currently being developed in the Verkhovna Rada," the country's parliament
the ministry "will analyze the approved norms," the statement said
Ukraine's military, like Russia's
has suffered massive losses on the battlefield since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of the country in February 2022
Those figures have likely since increased amid heavy fighting in Ukraine's east
Meanwhile, Russia has seen up to an estimated 350,000 dead and injured troops in the war
GREEN BAY - A 50-year-old prison inmate has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman a decade ago in Green Bay after DNA linked him to the crime
is charged with first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping
He is accused of forcing a woman into a car
taking her to another location and sexually assaulting her
according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday in Brown County Circuit Court
The charges were filed after investigators matched Bester's DNA to a sample from the woman's previously untested rape kit
Bester is currently serving a sentence at Waupun Correctional Institution for a 2018 conviction in Brown County of felony first-degree reckless injury and substantial battery
in October 2009 when Bester grabbed her from behind and forced her into a car driven by another man
Bester carried her inside and sexually assaulted her for two hours. He wore gloves and a black mask
Bester took her back to the car and dropped her off at an optometrist's office on Mason Street
The State Crime Lab informed police last fall that the DNA sample from the rape kit appeared to match Bester's profile in the FBI's national database
Investigators confirmed the match earlier this year
Bester is the 10th person charged in the past 18 months as a result of the state Department of Justice's effort to reduce a backlog of over 6,000 untested rape kits. A spokeswoman for the department confirmed that Bester's case is tied to the department's sexual assault kit initiative.
Officials announced earlier this week that they've so far tested more than 4,300 kits and referred 35 cases to local prosecutors for charging decisions.
Bester is scheduled to appear in Brown County Circuit Court via video on Aug

A new chapter in the history of one of Amarillo's most enduring institutions began Thursday at First Presbyterian Church
Presbyterian Home for Children welcomed new president Darrin Murphy and recognized the service of outgoing president Scott Sticksel at a come-and-go reception attended by dozens of colleagues and friends
Presbyterian Home for Children provides residential and developmental services for children age 5 to young adults attending college
The campus on Southwest 34th Avenue is the home for anywhere from 45 to 55 children at any given time
Most of the children are placed in the agency through Child Protective Services or the juvenile probation system
although some come through private placement
The children attend local public schools while enrolled in the program
"The last three years have been amazing," Sticksel said of his tenure with the organization
"The challenges kids face today are a lot different than they had been in the past
And so one of the things that has been fun has been trying to figure out
'What are the things that kids need today that are relevant to their lives
What will take them from a place of trying to just survive to a place where they are thriving?'"
The children live in one of seven cottages
which can house up to eight residents each
The daily life of the campus is led by a specially-trained married couple who live on site and one other full-time employee
"One of the biggest insights for us is that even though kids learn well from being told things
one of the things we found is that some of the most transformational things we do with the kids are experiential," Sticksel said
"We connect our kids with mission trips to Belize
So they move from being victims to helping other people succeed in their lives ..
then it takes them out of 'Woe is me,' and it puts them into 'Hey
I can actually make a difference in this world.'"
said he is moving on to a consulting practice

After a delay out of respect for the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing
City released their new home kit on May 31
Having worn a different shade of blue on the sleeves of last season's shirt

City unveiled their latest away kit on July 25

Nike have taken inspiration from the club's rich history when piecing together the design
with the shirt worn by the 1956 FA Cup-winning team featuring dark maroon
Leaks of City's third kit that have appeared so far have revealed an interesting dark green design that looks almost like camouflage due to the pattern of the print on the shirt
That kit is not expected to be released until the start of the new season or even later
Manchester United's new home kit sees the Red Devils return to a single shade of red
but includes the interesting addition of a black and white trim on the sleeves

Newcastle have departed from last season's road shirt
which was navy with a large orange hoop across the middle
The 2017-18 away kit features a light blue shirt
dark denim blue shorts and light blue socks
which is a deferential nod to Newcastle East End FC
the team that eventually became Newcastle United when it merged with West End FC in 1892

Southampton revealed both of their new kits on June 16 - by releasing a cartoon video that sees Saints players take on the role of superheroes and topple a villain who bares more than a passing resemblance to former manager Ronald Koeman

though they have brought out one-off kits in the past to deal with clashes
Swansea City are entering the second year of their kit deal with Joma and have a new sponsor this season in Asian gambling company Letou Sports

while the bright red AIA sponsor logo remains as bold as ever

There are some fans who simply could not care less and those who have a real interest in the latest threads
There are few clubs in the world that sell shirts at a volume like Man Utd and that is largely down to past success
trophies and players and many football fans can look at an old Man Utd top and immediately name at least a handful of players who wore it
While success has been harder to come by in the wake of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement
the club has continued to produce kits well worthy of appreciation
Here are the best kits Man Utd have produced since the Premier League's inception
Rashford made his debut in 2015/16 / Alex Livesey/GettyImagesThis shirt had a really good blend of interesting details and clean areas. It's not easy to make a good top with an ugly gold Chevrolet logo slapped in the middle
The white cuffs looked good and the collar was well-fitting.It is unfortunately synonymous with Louis van Gaal's tepid football at United
it is also a kit Bastian Schweinsteiger wore and the one Rashford burst onto the scene in.Clean kit and it birthed a blossoming superstar; one of the club's most important figures in the post-Fergie landscape
United wore navy checks in 2013/14 / Boris Streubel/GettyImagesThe club subtly attempted to remain in a Fergie world with the design of their 2013/14 away kit
The navy check pattern was identical from the home kit's design the season prior - Ferguson's last at the helm
While United's midnight navy gingham away kit will always be associated with David Moyes and his dreadful attempt to complete the impossible task of succeeding the club's greatest ever manager
you can't deny that it's a clean-looking shirt
and Patrice Evra scored an absolute thunderb*stard in it at the Allianz Arena
/ Getty Images/GettyImagesUmbro certainly opted to kick off a new dawn with a bang as they started the Premier League era by celebrating Newton Heath with his garish half-and-half away strip
You'd usually associate a yellow and green combination with a court jester from Tudor times (or Norwich City) but it's lunacy it's what made it
which focussed around recreating Newton Heath team photos from the late 19th century
and the club's early Premier League success means this distinct shirt is remembered fondly
Roy Keane ran the midfield in this shirt / Clive Brunskill/GettyImagesThe Vodafone shirts at Man Utd were worn by some incredible players
so naturally Premier League title success followed. This was back when kits were often worn for more than one season
so they played in this during 2000/01 and 2001/02 as the Red Devils finished first and third respectively.Paul Scholes
Ruud van Nistelrooy and David Beckham all showed off this clean offering from Umbro
with the black trim making them look particularly menacing
Man Utd won the Carabao Cup in 2022/23 / Jan Kruger/GettyImagesMan Utd's 2022/23 home effort definitely split opinion but there are some superb details that were too good to ignore. The Team Viewer sponsor is much cleaner than previous designs
the collar gave Scott McTominay the chance to do his best Eric Cantona impression
and the lines on the shoulders really suited some players.United also won their first trophy since 2017 with this strip by winning the Carabao Cup
United won the Europa League in blue / Nils Petter Nilsson/GettyImagesYou may always associate Man Utd with red
but many will remember some of the club's grandest European successes occuring while the side was donning blue. There have been superior iterations to the 2016/17 away kit
but this was nonetheless a fine-looking and simple strip which hit all the right notes
Its gradient design proved to be pioneering
and it was the shirt worn during United's 2017 Europa League success under Jose Mourinho
Wayne Rooney also scored his 250th goal for the club while strutting around in the blue he would've grown familiar with from his Everton days
Wayne Rooney scored his most iconic goal in this shirt / ANDREW YATES/GettyImagesIs this shirt ranked in the top ten because of its pure design or the quality of the team that wore it
it makes the cut. While the badge was slightly too small
the rest of the top was sharp with a good collar.Dimitar Berbatov and Wazza strutted their stuff in it while winning the league and the Community Shield and also reached the final of the Champions League
Marcus Rashford was a key player in this shirt / PAUL ELLIS/GettyImagesUnited did well to make a kit look this good with the Chevrolet logo. This one was a throwback to 1999 and the gold badge was a brave detail
It seemed to grow on people throughout the campaign and is also associated with some of the great football United played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. They finished third in 2019/20 and reached three different semi-finals
The season felt like genuine progress and Marcus Rashford was superb by grabbing 17 Premier League goals
Robin van Persie scored 30 goals in 2012/13 / Alex Livesey/GettyImagesThere is one man who is totally synonymous with this Man Utd shirt.Robin van Persie ripped the Premier League apart in this shirt and delivered United's most recent Premier League title to date.It was also Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge and his team walked to the title
securing it with a special win at Old Trafford against Aston Villa
The checkered pattern was a nice change and looked very sharp
while the black collar looked great under the lights
Eric Cantona was able to turn up the collar of this shirt and become an icon / Anton Want/GettyImagesOne of the two most iconic Man Utd kits with the Sharp sponsor
this shirt actually had Old Trafford on it.You had to squint to see it
It can't have been easy to get the stadium on the shirt
so it's little wonder they only wore it for two seasons
A daunting all-black look / Clive Brunskill/GettyImagesHow good are all black kits
Those pesky referees and their attire ensure such designs are produced infrequently
they look wonderful when they're crafted
United's daunting all-black away strip first worn in 1993 was fitting of their early Premier League presence
The Red Devils were an imperious counter-attacking force
with teams often getting overwhelmed by streaks of black shirts pouring forward on transition
This was the first black kit ever worn by the club
but the ubiquity of retro football shirt outlets ensure it certainly has a legacy
It's certainly a popular choice for not just United fans
It was the shirt worn by Eric Cantona when he infamously kung-fu kicked a spectator at Selhurst Park which earned him a lengthy ban
Some great goals were scored by United in 2006/07 / Laurence Griffiths/GettyImagesSome people weren't sure about this strip at the time
but the gold trim won people around once United started winning
There was gold outlining on the body of the shirt and it also ran around the badge that had a white background. The white cuffs and v-neck collar were really clean and there was some superb football played in it
Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo got 23 goals each this season as United won the league
An iconic kit shone on the big stage / Shaun Botterill/GettyImagesWe mentioned United's European success in blue earlier
and the Red Devils were the designated away team in the 2009 Champions League final
the presence of blue on Barcelona's home shirt forced United into white
The royal blue boasts an air of sophistication and class; fitting for a club so wonderfully dominant during this time
and we saw the very best of Cristiano Ronaldo in this shirt
Who can forget his free-kick against Arsenal at the Emirates which helped United into the aforementioned Champions League final that year
They surely would've beaten Pep Guardiola's Barca had they been donning royal blue...Okay
Andy Cole is heavily associated with this Man Utd shirt / Mark Thompson/GettyImagesThe greatest Sharp kit that there was
Millions of fans would love to get their hands on one of these and would pay a lot of money for it.Man Utd won the treble in this shirt and the Umbro detailing down the arms and onto the shorts was brilliant. The collar was iconic
the badge looked wonderful and some of the greatest players in Man Utd's history wore it
Man Utd beat Chelsea in the Champions League final in this shirt / Etsuo Hara/GettyImagesThe last time Man Utd used a shirt for more than one season and it's clear why. This is the cleanest shirt United have had in the Premier League and there is no ignoring that the football they played made it look even better.A simple design from Nike took attention away from the sponsor with no unnecessary details
The gold Premier League patches added some prestige as Ronaldo and Rooney ran the show. The Premier League was won twice in this shirt
the Community Shield twice and the Club World Cup
