BETAThe functionality works in the mode of experimental operation
On the night Vladimir Putin announced his special noninvasive operation
I did the only thing I could think to do: I called my dad
As the first kindergarten-seeking missiles struck Ukraine
my dad was sure: "Putin doesn't know what's coming
I never thought of myself as Ukrainian before the war
no one here in the United States ever seemed to know where or what Ukraine was
which I'll admit was a bit embarrassing growing up
As a Jewish American kid whose first language was Russian
it was hard enough to fit in without trying to explain the complexities of nationality in my parents' bygone USSR
Russian or Jewish were easy identifiers for Americans to digest
The few times I opted for specificity prompted a question I got tired of answering: "Ukraine … that's in Russia
Biden stated the obvious: Putin must not remain in power, free to destroy Ukraine
the lands of the Russian Empire beyond which Jews were forbidden to live
My grandparents and great-grandparents had names like Israel and Avram-Moishe. They spoke Yiddish around the dinner table
and Russian at the only jobs they were allowed to work – all while trying to parry the occasional pogrom
Courageous women: Ukrainian moms remind me of the mother of Jesus
In the past month, I've watched in horror as Putin revived the age-old Russian repression on an industrial scale. He bombed the Holocaust memorial in Babi Yar in my babushka's native Kyiv and schools in my dad’s hometown of Korosten
the local youths yelled the Russian equivalent of an antisemitic slur as they threw rocks through the windows at the reception
My family tried to avoid a repeat by holding the next wedding outside
The vandals adapted and set the wedding tent ablaze using firecrackers
though my family recalls making light of the situation and chasing the arsonists out with clubs of bologna
Despite some close friendships and a shared way of life
my mishpucha never thought there could be a tent big enough for Ukrainians and Jews to coexist
Seize a yacht or not?: Why it may not be legal to take property from Russian oligarchs
I realize that to support Ukraine today is to cheer on some of the very people my parents once ran from
But it's the fact that the vast majority of Ukrainians would claim their Jewish president
so wholly as their own that they would not just elect him with an overwhelming majority
but also would put their lives on the line to protect him
that fuels my faith in the righteousness of Ukraine's national identity – an identity I'm honored to embrace as part of my own
by uniting to valiantly defend the fundamental principles of democracy and self-determination
It's inspiring to see so many members of the Ukrainian diaspora
affirming their own Ukrainian identity in solidarity.
It was in that initial call with my dad that I first heard about the now world-renowned will of the Ukrainian people
Amid my early feelings of fear and pessimism
my dad knew the resolve of his homeland better than any geopolitical expert I had read in the days prior
neither of us could have known the extent to which the Ukrainian people would rally around a member of our tribe
Columnist Connie Schultz: The Ukrainian girl who sang 'Let It Go' from a bomb shelter gave us all hope
In his futile attempt to erase the existence of a national identity
Putin managed only to denazify my preconceived notions of Ukraine and make me prouder than ever to be a first-generation Ukrainian Russian Jewish American.

The memory of Lydia will be carried by her children
and Walter Wabischewich (Anita Spring); her grandchildren
Jonathan Ehlert (Melissa (née Ross)) and Timothy Ehlert; and her great-grandchildren Julia Ehlert

While Lydia had many difficulties and challenges in life
she met each one with perseverance and grace
As a Bill Wabischwich’s loving wife and mother to Linda
Lydia enjoyed her time as a “domestic engineer” making a home for her husband and family
She would listen when we needed an attentive ear
giving the encouragement needed; she was humble too
doing her noble work “behinds the scenes” as it were
and admiration for her grew in the hearts of her husband and children – positively impacting them to this day
is the best kind of “legacy” she could leave behind
The world is a better place to have had her
she was looking forward to going “home” to heaven

Everything was so organized and pertinent to what we needed
courteous and very helpful during our emotional and challenging time
They were so prompt on answering any questions and changing things
They were prepared and respected any religious decisions
The process was so seamless and made easy in such a high stress situation
In the past 2 years Springfield has helped us through the death of my Mother and my Father
Their response and help allowed us to focus on the remaining family rather than worrying about details of the funeral and all the notifications that are required upon a death
The atmosphere has been nothing but professional during times of grief
the staff coached me on the next steps and looked after filling in all the government forms that I needed to sign
which took a huge burden off my mind at the time
From the time I called to the completion of all the services
There was a sense of caring from each staff member
I was turning over my Mom to their care and I felt very comfortable with everyone
I felt heard and never felt pushed into any decision
I have always found the team at Springfield Funeral Home to be VERY caring
I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone who asks which funeral home would I suggest they use
No other funeral home I have dealt with even comes close to Springfield Funeral Home
I was made to feel as if I was the only one they had to serve
Everything that was arranged for us was perfect
Thank you for making this difficult time a little more acceptable via your staff’s obvious caring and respect
I liked the personal treatment given to my mother who is 97 years old
I found Springfield employees pleasant and sincere
was that the funeral home would help me get through the paperwork need at this time
Since this was my first experience (with a funeral home)
everything was above and beyond what I expected
Thank you to your team for your kindness to me at a very challenging time
You have now taken care of both of my parents with professionalism and care
Springfield Funeral Home is always professional
We appreciate that you have dedicated staff for all needs from planning the service to completing government paperwork
I am not sure there was anything you could have done to make a very intense emotional time less stressful
Although we hadn’t expected Ken to want a service
when he said we needed to have one for us not him
Your sincerity and compassion meant everything to us
your compassion and professionalism is truly amazing
super professional and caring as each guest arrived
Keep up the good work that you do as it is such an important service you provide
It is still the most difficult time in a person’s life
We appreciated the peace of mind that everything was being looked after
You provide a wonderful service for people going through a traumatic time
The kindness and professionalism shown by the staff at Springfield Funeral Home was exemplary
