fervently dedicated to their independence and national security and
they have felt a sense of comfort in diplomatic and defense support from the United States
But with President Donald Trump's administration pressuring Ukraine to turn over profits from minerals and accept unclear ceasefire deals from an invading nation
Ukrainians say they no longer trust in America’s allyship
I spent two and a half weeks reporting in central Ukraine in February as part of a fellowship with the International Women’s Media Foundation
I heard extraordinary stories of resilience from everyday Ukrainians
But throughout all of these interactions lingered a sense of loss and betrayal that Ukrainians felt toward the United States — a global giant which
was Ukraine’s biggest supporter against Russian aggression
As I toured a kindergarten that had been bombed by Russians in the first days of the full-scale invasion in 2022
as I had tea with a man who hasn’t seen his wife and sons in three years
as I heard horror stories of the front lines from nurses and doctors
Trump called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “dictator” and complained that the war-besieged country isn’t repaying the U.S
for billions in military aid Congress had previously approved without strings attached
Trump also argued that Ukraine needs to hold elections and Zelensky is inappropriately holding onto power
Ukrainian law suspends elections while the country is under martial law — a political and security status established when the war began
Among threats to pull crucial military aid that was once a guarantee
Trump pushed for Ukraine to hand over a share of revenue from the country’s critical mineral stores as a form of retroactive payment for U.S
Ukrainians told the Cap Times their country's situation is not about territory or mineral riches or political scorekeeping — it’s about life and death
“It isn’t just another political talking point or highlight for somebody's news feed
It’s the devastation of what people go through
And what (Trump) is saying is just not true
That’s the worst part,” said Marta Jarrell
a mother of four who lives in Kyiv and has a friend who fled Ukraine and settled in Stoughton
“It’s not true what he’s saying about President Zelensky
A lot of Ukrainians think he is doing an amazing job," she said
Jarrell is concerned about the normalization of outside politicians working to dictate how Ukraine responds to its own invasion
Russia began this war by invading Ukraine’s sovereign borders
but Jarrell said she feels like Trump is forcing Ukraine to make sacrifices on the road to peace
cozying up to Russian President Vladimir Putin along the way
“It’s like ‘you need to be forgiving to your abuser
you need to make peace with your abuser,’” she said
when a victim is not being supported and rather forced to comply and conform.”
Zelensky met with the Trump administration at the White House on Friday
A heated exchange in the Oval Office began with Trump and Vice President JD Vance berating the Ukrainian leader
claiming Zelensky hasn’t been grateful enough for America’s military aid and accusing the wartime president of not wanting a ceasefire
who has for years called for peace in his country and an end to a brutal Russian invasion that has cost thousands of lives
noting that even the United States would be affected if Russia’s aggression isn’t stopped
whom Zelensky criticized for speaking about Ukraine without ever having visited the country
eventually instructed the Ukrainian president to “just say thank you.”
The Ukrainian president previously visited the White House and addressed members of Congress on multiple occasions under former President Joe Biden
aid and calling for an alliance against Russia’s expansionist threats
My time in Ukraine preceded the most recent Oval Office debacle
but even then Ukrainians told me they don’t trust Trump — a sentiment likely exponentially increased by the American president’s behavior last week
a lawyer in the Ukrainian town of Kropyvnytskyi whose wife and youngest son fled to Madison in 2022
said he is not optimistic about a possible ceasefire
“Our enemy is not agreeable or open to negotiations
this problem would have been solved in 2022.”
Turchanov doesn’t believe Russia would honor the deal
“We already had this experience in 2014 when they took Crimea and parts of Donbas,” he said
While I heard Turchanov and Jarrell’s fears and while air raid sirens haunted my nights in Kyiv
Trump said Zelensky should not have allowed his own country to be invaded
started the war is “nonsense,” Turchanov said
and a clear parroting of Russia’s narrative
I asked Turchanov if he fears that Trump will side with Putin
Following his visit to the White House last week
which concluded with a canceled joint press conference and a mineral deal left unsigned
Zelensky met with European heads of state over the weekend
The leaders spoke clearly of their alliance with Ukraine
their vows to help chip in defense funding and their disappointment with America’s behavior days prior
Ukrainians fear that Trump may use Friday’s showdown as an excuse to pull military funding from Ukraine
Despite promises of support from European leadership who likely feel the threat of nearby Russia more keenly than the current American administration
Ukrainian analysts and diplomats note that their country's ongoing fight for their homeland hinges on outside military aid and
Ukraine’s defense strategy will likely be threatened
Jarrell questioned how Americans would feel about the situation if they were experiencing what Ukrainians do on a daily basis
Ukraine is not doing anything wrong,” Jarrell said
“Imagine that somebody came and broke into your house and said
'Give me your daughter.' What would you do

he is a homegrown judo talent who switched to jiu-jitsu: “I have been practicing judo since my childhood” Ievgen explained
“when I was 18 a knee surgery forced me to focus on the ground game
That’s when jiu-jitsu appeared in my life.”
Trying to learn jiu-jitsu in Ukraine at the time was no easy task, “there were only two blue belts in the whole country,” Skyrda told BJJ Heroes in an interview performed on January 2021. Committed to learning, Ievgen sought out Zé Radiola black belt Max Carvalho
a very respected coach on the international circuit
Given the scarcity of instructors in the region
Ievgen took the job of spreading the jiu-jitsu gospel upon himself: “As there were no BJJ masters in my city
I had to start teaching in the early stages of my own training
it was more like sambo training early on.”
the club has broken through with adult European champions such as Roman Nepota
and Yaroslav Blazhko (who also has a bronze medal at the worlds) and another rising Eastern European talent in Sergei Krasovskiy
Much of the quick success seen by Ievgen Skyrda’s Спортивний клуб “Борець” academy – which
translates to “Wrestler/Grappler Sports Club” – is down to his full-time professional program
fully designed and developed by the Ukrainian coach
The set up is simple: “All our top athletes live in our house
and we also give the guys the opportunity to earn money by teaching kids groups
We live like a family.” said the team leader
The professional squad has a group of 20 athletes mixed between children and adults
let alone a jiu-jitsu gym in a small town of a country with little to no known history in this particular sport
Ievgen hopes to produce local world champions in due time
anyone who brings something to the table is welcome
Currently holding Ukrainian athletes from different regions
“The main selection criterion is having a great desire to succeed
the athlete’s desire to work for the result
We don’t care what academy he is from
jiu-jitsu is for everyone.” said Skyrda
Many have argued that Eastern Europe is one of the main untapped regions of the world for jiu-jitsu
given how successful countries such as Russia
and Ukraine have been in judo and wrestling and the tremendous athletic potential that lies therein
the Ukraine and coach Ievgen Skyrda seem to be leading the way and hopefully opening the doors for others to follow

National Guardsman Anatoly was wounded in 2014
during fighting with Russian troops in one of the districts of the Luhansk region
and today continues to fight for the freedom of Ukraine
He signed the contract because he decided to devote his life to military service
The Russian occupiers then annexed Crimea and supported the terrorists in parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions
We joined the struggle for the territorial integrity of our state
Then the enemy used the tactics of shelling our positions with small arms
the agreed regime of silence was not observed
the insidiousness of the occupiers manifested itself” — recalls Anatoly
After returning from the combat task - the “secret” to the place of deployment
the guards dried their equipment: they got wet through due to heavy rains
Anatoly and his brother were seriously wounded by shrapnel
One of the fragments is still in the man's forearm
Anatoly firmly decided to continue serving in the National Guard
hundreds of young soldiers underwent combat hardening
He does not get tired of persistently teaching the military profession of every novice
Anatoly's activities are the personification of the modern approach to military management according to NATO standards
when the role of a sergeant is key — as a leader
“Since the occupation by the Russians of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions
have not left the feeling that this will not end
the insidious enemy will continue to try to seize Ukraine
Because he cannot forgive us for our love of freedom
the future victory both at the front and in the rear depends on the resilience of each of us
so that society will always remember at what cost us freedom
And that there is no other way out than to continue the fight against our primordial enemy — the Russian aggressor,” the guard said
