The Ukrainian army is suffering major setbacks as uncertainty mounts over what US policy towards Ukraine will be after Donald Trump’s re-election as president
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed Trump
claiming his victory would in fact allow for greater US-NATO intervention against Russia in Ukraine
“Congratulations to Donald Trump on his impressive election victory
I recall our great meeting with President Trump back in September
when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-US strategic partnership
and ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine.”
But neither Zelensky’s “Victory Plan” nor Trump’s “Art of the Deal” will solve the catastrophe of the war in Ukraine
NATO was not waging a war to defend Ukrainian democracy against an aggressive but militarily inept Russian foe
as the NATO imperialist powers have claimed during the nearly three-year war
but using Ukrainians as cannon fodder in a failed attempt to crush Russia
It is increasingly difficult even for imperialist media to hide that Ukraine has been not liberated but shattered
and that opposition to the NATO war is mounting among Ukrainian workers
and began threatening Toretsk and Pokrovsk
is the last major obstacle blocking a Russian march on Dnipro and the Dniepr River
If Russian troops advanced along this line
it could force the Ukrainian army to withdraw from all of southeastern Ukraine to avoid being encircled
The French military newsletter La Vigie stated:
Advances [by Russian forces] from Avdivka to Pokrovsk and Toretsk and the bypassing of Vuhledar come after major efforts
in regions highly valued and aggressively defended by both sides
The current apparent resignation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine contrasts with their initial combativeness
all the central Donbass will be open to Russian troop maneuvers
there is no defense behind it until one reaches the Dniepr
the unification of the [Russian] fronts in the Donbass and Zaporizhzhya is possible
Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief General Oleksandr Syrskiy said yesterday that the Kremlin is massing 45,000 troops north of Ukraine
He said 10,000 North Korean troops had joined Russian troops there
aim to seize the pocket of Russian territory near Kursk held by Ukrainian troops and then drive into northern Ukraine near Sumy
Russian drones and missiles are attacking military and strategic targets across Ukraine
which Ukraine’s air defenses are powerless to prevent
they claimed to have shot down 38 of 63 drones launched at nine regions of Ukraine: Odesa
The governor of Zaporizhzhya reported that missile strikes on his region had killed seven and wounded 25 yesterday
there were reportedly large-scale Russian drone and missile strikes on major Ukrainian cities
Trump’s occasional claims that he will negotiate overnight an end to the NATO-Russia war in Ukraine have no credibility whatsoever
Not only are NATO and its puppet regime in Ukraine for now in a desperately weak position
but the war in Ukraine itself is only part of a far broader war for world hegemony that Trump has pledged to escalate
bombing Iran or imposing crippling trade sanctions on China
But such NATO attacks on Russian allies would inevitably provoke renewed conflict between NATO and Russia in Ukraine
Zelensky denounced the danger posed by Shahed drones built by Iran and delivered to Russia for use in Ukraine and called to bomb Iran
we have faced the threat of Shahed drones almost every night—sometimes in the morning
These strike UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles)
have become one of the primary instruments of Russian terror against Ukraine
… We require the capability to destroy Shahed storage bases as well as the entire infrastructure for their production and logistics.”
Zelensky has already advocated bombing drone production facilities in Iran and Syria to escalate the war on Russia across the Middle East
the Guardian published plans he discussed with NATO officials
calling for “missile strikes on the production plants of these UAVs in Iran
as well as on a potential production site in the Russian Federation
… The above may be carried out by the Ukrainian defense forces if partners provide the necessary means of destruction.”
While Zelensky and Trump discuss military escalation
opposition to the war is mounting among Ukrainian workers
The military debacle is provoking mass outrage against the Zelensky regime
which treats workers’ lives as expendable as it prosecutes a war based on imperialist geostrategic interests
Amid growing concern in the NATO ruling classes over the course of the war
this is even beginning to provoke coverage in pro-war media like France’s Le Monde daily
whom Le Monde identified as close to Ukrainian military intelligence
admitted that masses of Ukrainians are deserting from the army
a soldier who publicly announced on social media that he was deserting
Asseyev said: “It’s a problem that has already gone beyond 100,000 people
We have an immense army of deserters who are wandering around the country
They see very well how part of society avoids mobilization orders
Le Monde journalists also went to Kryve Ozero
committed suicide rather than take older soldiers from his poorly-armed
poorly-trained territorial defense unit into a fight with Russian army troops near Vuhledar
One resident of the town told the daily: “We only had machine guns but neither artillery nor armored vehicles
Ihor knew what that meant: Everyone was going to die.” Another added
We understood right away that it was a one-way ticket.”
another resident of the town told Le Monde
But he knew he could never have come home if he had obeyed these orders.”
Though Hryb’s refusal to take his unit into battle has for now saved the lives of many townspeople
the losses are still massive: “At Kryve Ozero
This tears apart Le Monde’s claims that Ukraine has lost 58,000 men in the war and confirms reports—often dismissed as Russian propaganda in imperialist media—that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have been killed
even in a city where many soldiers’ lives were spared
over 1 percent of the pre-war population has nonetheless been killed
But if 1 percent of Ukraine’s pre-war population has died in the war
this would mean a staggering 420,000 deaths
The way forward is the unification of Ukrainian and Russian workers and youth
together with their class brothers and sisters in the NATO coutnries
in a socialist movement against the NATO-Russia war
The necessary political basis of such a movement is the Trotskyist perspective of international socialist revolution and opposition to the Stalinist dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991
which paved the way for NATO imperialism to incite a fratricidal conflict between Russia and Ukraine
the leaf blower war or the anti-'woke' backlash

commander of the 186th battalion deployed in Donbas
chose to commit suicide rather than carry out orders that would have inevitably led to the death of his under-equipped and ill-prepared men against the Russian forces
Lieutenant-Colonel Ihor Hryb and the soldiers of his battalion had received orders to leave the Kherson region in southern Ukraine for the Donbas region in the east of the country
a non-commissioned officer (NCO) of the 186th battalion
who spoke anonymously after returning from the mission
The soldiers had been deployed overnight to unfamiliar territory and the battalion was understaffed and very poorly equipped
but no artillery or armor [to hold off the Russian advance]," continued the NCO
the commander of the 186th battalion sent a last recommendation on a messaging loop: "Make your decisions
save people's lives." He disappeared the same day
under circumstances that remain officially unclear
who eventually left their positions the following day
there was no doubt: The commander had committed suicide after refusing to carry out orders
Hryb joined the army at the start of the Donbas war in 2014
has announced the opening of an internal investigation into the circumstances of the death of a "soldier devoted to the military cause and to his country."

Due to the suspension of funding for USAID programmes
projects worth several million dollars are being frozen in Mykolaiv
Deputy Mayor Serhii Korenev told NikVesti in a commentary
US President Donald Trump suspended foreign aid to other countries
We are talking about funding through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
but billions of dollars have been coming through it
All agency projects have been put on hold for 90 days
after which the projects will either be resumed or revised
and there is actually hope that there will be some movement on them
there were also plans and agreements for those projects that worked in partnership with USAID,» said Serhii Koreniev
The total amount of projects that are being suspended in Mykolaiv reaches several million dollars
I was a little pleased with the news that the US President's decree is still being evaluated and that some projects may be launched
The deputy mayor cited several major projects that should be implemented in Mykolaiv with US financial support
Mykolaiv was to receive about 2,000 tonnes of fuel for hospitals and critical infrastructure facilities in the city
«These are examples of fuel supplies for generators in healthcare facilities and critical infrastructure
This is about two thousand tonnes of fuel,» he said
city schools were to receive specialised equipment for classrooms
«There were plans to establish a STEM education system
These are practical materials and equipment for physics
a huge set for each subject,» said Serhii Koreniev
Denmark is currently considering the possibility of helping Mykolaiv schools with educational equipment
«But we are not sitting idly by and are communicating with other partners to cover these projects
The STEM education project is already being considered by Denmark
Perhaps they will provide a positive decision,» he said
Mykolaiv was also expecting to receive construction materials to repair the damage caused by enemy shelling
«We were supposed to receive roofing materials
These are materials for the full elimination of the consequences
A large delivery was to take place,» he added
Mykolaiv also signed a memorandum with the USAID «Democratic Governance in Eastern Ukraine Project» to provide support to local entrepreneurs affected by the war and seeking to restore
«We also had planned cooperation to support small and medium-sized businesses. And you have probably seen the memorandum signed with the Mykolaiv City Council
which was announced for a fairly substantial amount,» added Serhii Koreniev
Among other things, government agencies and organisations in Mykolaiv region have stopped receiving funding, according to an article by «Ekonomichna Pravda»
They received funds for its implementation: NGO «Mykolaiv Centre for Investigative Journalism» and PE «Mykolaivski Novyny»
The programme aims to provide local media with the tools and opportunities to increase citizens' access to high-quality news and information
It is the largest media development project in the history of Ukraine
Project «Democratic Governance in Eastern Ukraine»
The recipients are Mykolaiv City Territorial Community and Mykolaiv City Council
It works to build trust between citizens and the government
strengthen citizen participation in community development and economic recovery of communities in the government-controlled areas of the south and east of Ukraine
Project «Decentralisation Offering Better Results and Efficiency (DOBRE)»
DOBRE works to help communities in Ukraine meet the challenges and opportunities of decentralisation by improving local governance and increasing citizen engagement in policy and decision-making
One example of funding is the establishment of a community bakery in the Voznesensk community in December 2024
It was intended to help create new jobs and fill the local budget
Project «Improving the Performance and Accountability of Local Governments (Hoverla)»
Recipients: Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration
Voskresenske and Vradiivka village councils
Voznesensk and Pivdenoukrainsk city councils
It is envisaged that each partner community will receive comprehensive support to strengthen the institutional capacity of local self-government
service delivery and local economic development
Support for the regions heavily affected by the war is focused on reconstruction and recovery
In December 2024, the Southern Ukrainian community received four diesel generator sets under the «Hoverla» project
They have a capacity of 180 kilowatts and a total cost of 1.9 million hryvnias
Project «Youth as a Conductor of Ukrainian National Identity»
Only Kryve Ozero village council is a participant in Mykolaiv region
In the «Energy Security Project of Ukraine»
the recipients are the joint-stock company «Mykolaivoblenergo»
the municipal enterprise «Mykolaivoblteploenergo»
the private joint-stock company «Mykolaiv CHP»
and the Mykolaiv Regional Clinical Hospital
Affordable and Effective Medicines for Ukrainians (SAFE Med) — SAFE Med»
Funds for its implementation were received by: Mykolaiv Regional Special Medical Supply Base
Regional Centres for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health
Project «Support to TB Control Efforts in Ukraine»
Recipients: KNP «Mykolaiv Regional Phthisiopulmonological Medical Centre»
Project «REACH 95: Accessibility of quality HIV services in healthcare facilities in Ukraine»
The Health Department of Mykolaiv Regional State Administration is a participant in the programme
a project worth 8 million hryvnias for NGOs «Mykolaiv Development Fund»
10 communities in Odesa region on government and community interaction in recovery under the USAID project «Hoverla» has been suspended
As a reminder, on 28 January, the US State Department revised its decision to suspend funding for USAID programmes, introducing a number of exceptions
They primarily apply to humanitarian programmes that provide «essential life-saving medicines
as well as supplies and reasonable administrative costs necessary to provide such assistance»
