I was co-moderating a discussion on risks and art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University for the event “Arts and Society: Dialogues.” I was looking at my phone and going over the sample questions to ask the participants when I received a text from my mom saying
“We were outside with your brother and our dog
the explosion felt far but the ground was shaking.” Momentarily
I tracked back my thoughts to before the event
I saw a notification that there was an air raid alert in Kryvyi Rih
possibly due to the missile carriers being launched in Russia
I had a feeling that this was not a precautionary alert
yet never in a million years would I assume that the attack would be that deadly
I did not tell anyone at the discussion table about what had just happened
the horrifying bombings became an abnormal norm
and I tend to shut down my emotions to process them when I am on my own
Bringing this up would change the course of conversation
as people outside of Ukraine are rightfully not as adjusted to news like this
I did not take this particular attack very well
I thought that nothing would shake me as much after watching the Bucha massacre
the attack on Okhmatdyt and many other traumatic events
the strikes sent shrapnel flying into a children’s playground
The attack killed nine children and 11 adults
leaving many more injured. Among the dead was a girl I knew from my school. She was younger than me
Watching the news about the funerals and learning more about the victims from social media has been absolutely heartbreaking. After every attack
“What if that happens to my family?” Seeing the buildings I walked by in the past now heavily damaged and hearing from my relatives about how loud the attack was only puts additional pressure on my already fragile mental state
I often hear that my photographs feel “cold” and “distant,” and despite my attempts to explain that they involuntarily translate my constant sense of loss
people in the United States rarely understand
This is the type of experience I would not wish on anyone
Not even 10 days went by before Russia’s missiles caused another massive tragedy in Ukraine

Russian troops are advancing at a slow pace in most directions in the Donbas
They have again pushed Ukrainian soldiers out of most of the Toretsk quarters they had previously recaptured
and have seized new areas north of Toretsk
More villages between Pokrovsk and Velyka Novosilka have come under Russian control
and there was also a flanking of enemy forces holding out in the centre of Chasiv Yar
Russia made a significant ground advance on the western bank of the Zherebets River
but it does not affect the overall situation
They also pushed the defenders out of further positions west of Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region and north of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region
the Russians most likely captured Basivka in the Sumy region
but this is denied by the Ukrainian command
due to Russia reaching the Sumy-Kursk road near the Sudzha border crossing
the settlement has lost its previous importance for them
the Ukrainians are already holding out only in areas with a poorly developed road network – in the border town of Oleshnia (south of this border crossing) and west of Guyevo
President Volodymyr Zelensky has officially admitted that the Ukrainian army is conducting operations in the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation
Russian forces pushed back the enemy from the border town of Demidovka
which they have been attacking for several weeks
Between 30-60 km2 of hostile territory in the Kursk and Belgorod oblasts remains under Ukrainian control
Dozens of square kilometres of Sumy Oblast are occupied by the Russians
a Russian Iskander-M ballistic missile exploded over residential buildings in Kryvyi Rih
This is the highest single number of civilian casualties from a Russian attack since April 2024
The Russians indirectly admitted that the target of the strike was a residential area – the missile was said to have hit a restaurant located there with Ukrainian brigade commanders and Western instructors allegedly present
Another attack on Kryvyi Rih took place on the same day in the evening – drones hit a business
The premises were also the target of a ballistic missile that fell on the city on 2 April
the Ukrainian Air Force Command (UAFC) admitted its failure to repel an air attack on the capital and its environs – claiming to have shot down only one of the six ballistic missiles used by Russia
UAFC spokesman Yuriy Ihnat announced that only Patriot systems were effective against enemy ballistic missiles
The NASAMS and IRIS-T systems do not have the capability to counter this type of missile
The attack on Kyiv was part of a massive strike in which
the invaders simultaneously employed drones and cruise missiles
These led to devastation in the Khmelnytskyi
eight hits were recorded solely as a result of the attack by drones
the Russians used a total of 23 missiles and 109 drones
of which the defenders shot down 13 and 40 respectively
A large number of civilian casualties were caused by Russian drone strikes on Kharkiv on 3 April – five people were killed and 34 injured
Drones also attacked the city twice on 2 April
As many as 14 strikes were recorded that evening
Dnipro (4 April) and Kyiv and Mykolaiv (5 April) were also targets of drones
From the evening of 1 April to the morning of 8 April
Russia used a total of at least 438 strike drones and their imitators
with the UAFC failing to provide data for 7 April
even though it itself had previously reported attacks using drones
211 machines were shot down and 164 were locationally lost
The significant reduction in the number of drones used by Russia compared to previous weeks did not translate into an increase in the Ukrainian side’s claimed effectiveness against them
The enemy was also said to have used 28-30 missiles
13 of which were shot down (all on 6 April)
the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) presented data on the activity of the Russian intelligence services against Ukrainian citizens
22% of the recruited agents were minors used for sabotage actions and for planting explosive charges; 55% of those recruited were unemployed and 7% had a criminal past
The youngest unmasked by the SBU during the destruction of railway infrastructure was 13 years old
The SBU has also published a list of people cooperating with the enemy
whose task is to promote Vladimir Putin’s idea of setting up a provisional commissariat in Ukraine under the aegis of the UN
The next stage of the ‘plan’ is to bring about elections in the country and the establishment of a ‘government’ agreeing to the Russian terms of the peace agreement
The SBU’s material shows that this ‘government’ will then attempt to set up ‘alternative diplomatic missions’ in EU countries
The leader of this group is Dmytro Vasilyev – chairman of the marginal pro-Russian Derzhava party which was outlawed in 2022
This initiative is a typical disinformation special operation to suggest the existence of a strong pro-Russian political movement in Ukraine
Ukraine’s foreign intelligence service warned that the Russian intelligence services were intensifying an information operation against Ukraine
Messages undermining the legitimacy of the current government are being disseminated to justify the need for a ‘receivership’
The propagation of these solutions is also intended to provide an argument for why the Russian Federation is unable to conclude a peace agreement with Kyiv’s rulers
The operation is being conducted using the European media which supports the Russian narrative
These are also being spread about an alleged split between Ukraine’s military and political leadership
the country’s inability to conduct warfare on its own or the disruption of Western support
The operation is aimed at injecting the Kremlin’s narrative on the prospects of an end to the conflict into the political discourse in Ukraine’s partner countries
Ukrainian drones attacked industrial facilities in Chapayevsk in Samara Oblast and in Saransk in Mordovia
which produces explosives (according to the SBU
and in Saransk it was Optikovolokonnye Sistemy
drones which Russia uses in Ukraine (an office building was damaged)
Ukrainian forces carried out two major attacks on Russian territory on 2 and 4 April – using at least 93 and at least 107 drones
one of the targets was said to be the Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant
There is no information that the strikes resulted in significant damage

The death toll from a Russian missile strike on the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih has risen to 18, including nine children, according to regional officials.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – who comes from Kryvyi Rih – says the youngest to lose their life in Friday’s attack was just three-years-old.
At least 72 others were injured, with the youngest being a three-month-old baby, in what authorities say was a ballistic missile attack. About half of them remain in the hospital receiving treatment, with 17 of them still in critical condition, according to regional Governor Serhii Lysak.
“There can never be forgiveness for this,” said Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s defence council.
Local authorities said the strike damaged some 20 apartment buildings, close to three dozen vehicles, an educational facility and a restaurant. Authorities say the missile targeted a residential neighbourhood.
Kryvyi Rih has a population of approximately 600,000 and lies about 70 kilometres from the eastern front line.
“The missile struck an area right next to residential buildings – hitting a playground and ordinary streets,” said Zelenskyy on his official Telegram channel.
The Russian Defence Ministry says it carried out a “high-precision missile strike” with a high explosive warhead on a restaurant where a meeting with unit commanders and Western instructors was taking place.
The Kremlin says the attack killed 85 military personnel and foreign officers, and destroyed 20 vehicles used for military purposes. Kyiv rejects those claims and accuses Moscow of deliberately targeting civilians.
Russian strikes are continuing to target Ukrainian cities on a daily basis. Kyiv says almost 100 drones were launched into Ukraine overnight, with 51 shot-down by air defences.
Zelenskyy says Russia’s continued offensive showcases their unwillingness to end the war, as he accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of stalling and not being serious about peace amid ongoing US efforts to broker a truce and end the more than three-year long war.
The Ukrainian leader urged allies to exert more pressure on Moscow to agree to a peace deal. He also called for more support to Ukraine to bolster air defences to be better equipped to fend off Russian aerial threats.
Zelenskyy also criticised Washington’s response to the attack on his hometown. US Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget A Brink, posted on social media on Friday saying she was “horrified” by the strike.
“More than 50 people injured and 16 killed, including 6 children. This is why the war must end,” the post said.
Zelenskyy, who has so far had a strained relationship with US President Donald Trump reacted to the Ambassador’s comments saying it was “unpleasantly surprising” for not naming Russia as the perpetrator of the attack.
“Such a strong country, such a strong people – and such a weak reaction. They are even afraid to say the word ‘Russian’ when talking about the missile that killed children,” said Zelenskyy.
“Yes, the war must end. But in order to end it, we must not be afraid to call a spade a spade,” added the Ukrainian president.
In a separate attack on Saturday night going into Sunday, one person was killed in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and another three were injured.
Kyiv mayor Vtiali Klitschko said the air strike took place in Darnytskyi district, and caused several fires to break out, causing damage to cars and buildings.
The Ukrainian air force said that a total of 23 missiles and 109 strike and decoy drones were fired at various different parts of Ukraine during the night, with 13 of the missiles and 40 drones shot down. 53 decoy drones were jammed and did not hit their targets, they added.
On its part, the Russian Defence Ministry said its military destroyed 11 Ukrainian drones, including eight over the Rostov region and two over Kursk.

(State Emergency Service of Ukraine/Telegram)Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on April 14 condemned Russia’s recent deadly attacks on Ukrainian cities
accusing Moscow of mocking U.S.-led ceasefire efforts and escalating violence despite Ukraine’s commitment to peace
"I just want to say how appalled I am by the latest spate of Russian attacks on Ukraine," the minister said upon arrival at a European Union foreign ministers' meeting in Luxembourg
"Ukraine unconditionally agreed to a ceasefire over a month ago. The heinous attacks on Kryvyi Rih and Sumy are Russia's mocking answer."
A Russian strike on Sumy on April 13 killed at least 34 people and injured 119. U.S. President Trump called the attack a "horrible thing" but suggested it may have been a "mistake," without elaborating

The comments come more than a month after Ukraine accepted a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire during talks in Jeddah on March 11
but Russia rejected it unless foreign military support to Ukraine was halted
while both Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of violating the energy ceasefire
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also condemned the Sumy strike
saying Europe can only secure peace through collective strength
"The horrific attack on Sumy shows once again that the Russian president continues to seek the destruction of Ukraine – and with it, continues his attack on European peace," Baerbock said in Luxembourg
"It is now clear: whoever wants peace must protect Ukraine
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys called the Sumy attack "barbaric" and a "war crime," urging the EU to move forward with a 17th sanctions package against Moscow

Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger stressed that Ukraine has shown willingness for peace
while "Russia continues the war with brutality
We want peace — but not a dictated one."
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said recent attacks prove "Russia does not want peace" and called for more pressure on Moscow and stronger support for Ukraine
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot condemned the Sumy attack as a "Palm Sunday massacre," calling it evidence of Putin’s disregard for civilian lives and international law
"Putin must be constrained," Barrot said. "The EU must impose the harshest sanctions, and the U.S. should reinforce pressure if peace is to be achieved."

drone attacks have continued to strike cities and cause civilian casualties
Civilian infrastructure – including healthcare facilities

More than 90 civilian casualties were recorded in those regions last week
OHCHR has now verified the killing of at least 12,910 civilians
and the injury of almost 30,700 across Ukraine from 24 February 2022 to 31 March 2025
“The true toll is likely far greater,” he noted
nearly 3.7 million people remain internally displaced

Putin also mentioned a strike on a civilian facility in Odesa region
claiming the target was agricultural warehouses where a new missile system was allegedly being developed and tested
According to The Moscow Times

Ukrainian security forces have launched an investigation
and the community is calling for increased security measures
The first incident occurred early last week
when a car belonging to the community and bearing Jewish symbols was deliberately vandalized—its tires slashed
“This was an act aimed at hurting us as a Jewish community,” said the city’s rabbi and Shliach
the more serious incident happened on Motzoei Pesach
when Molotov cocktails were hurled at the shul
Rabbi Edri was alerted by the local CWA security coordinator in Ukraine
“Thanks to the reinforced windows installed in recent months
a major fire was prevented,” Rabbi Edri explained
along with security cameras and alarm systems installed by CWA
kept the firebombs from penetrating the building and causing significant damage
Rabbi Edri noted that the pattern resembled a recent anti-Semitic attack in Mykolaiv

Russian pro-war Telegram channels are falsely claiming that a 17-year-old named Nikita Solonichenko died by suicide at a training center of Ukraine's 92nd Mechanized Brigade in Kharkiv
They allege that he was a contract soldier who took his own life due to bullying by older servicemen
The strike also damaged nearly 20 apartment buildings
Russian propagandists used a photo from Nikita's funeral
cynically repurposing it to back up their fake story
It is a blatant attempt to hide responsibility for their own war crimes against Ukrainian children
while also trying to discredit the Ukrainian military and disrupt mobilization efforts in Ukraine
It is important to note that under Ukrainian law
only those aged 18 and above can sign a military contract
through the "Contract 18-24" program
Earlier, Russian media had also spread a similar fake story about the supposed death of a Ukrainian female soldier who had joined through the same program

Russian missiles targeted a residential neighbourhood with ballistic missiles on Friday in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih
The head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration
said on his official channel on Telegram that more than 30 others were injured and are at medical facilities seeking treatment
with the youngest being just three-months-old who suffered lacerations as a result of the attack
Residents say some of those injured sustained critical wounds and describe the attack as terrifying
“it started buzzing immediately and then exploded right away
All the windows are shattered; it broke all the windows and the balcony,” said Nina
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the attacks and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and injured in a post on his own Telegram channel

Kirill Dmitriev told Russian reporters after his talks in Washington that he discussed normalising Russia-US relations in meetings with members of US President Donald Trump’s administration
"What makes the Trump administration different is that they hear Russia's position and concerns
unlike the Biden administration," he said in televised remarks
He added that the talks addressed “economic and investment questions
including the potential return of some US companies to Russia
"We see that American companies want to come back to Russia and take niches left by European companies," he said
"And we see that the EU ideological restrictions can allow US companies to take the niches where it's useful for Russia
Dmitriev noted that the restoration of direct flights between Russia and the United States were among the issues that were also discussed
Dmitriev – who heads Russia’s sovereign wealth fund – was sanctioned by the Biden administration after the Kremlin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022
Restrictions were temporarily lifted by the Trump administration to allow him to travel to Washington this week
Zelenskyy commented on Dmitriev’s visit to the US on Friday saying he believes the Russian envoy was in Washington to discuss ways to facilitate the release of Russian frozen assets
we know the additional reasons why he was in the United States
he was not only the United States,” said Zelenskyy
“We are monitoring the movements of our enemies and the main question is how to withdraw three hundred billion frozen assets

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on X on April 7
Russia attacked Kryvyi Rih on April 4
Despite Russia's claims that it was attacking military targets
recently released security footage shows that no military personnel were present
"Russia’s ballistic strike on Kryvyi Rih last week killed nine children, the largest number of Ukrainian kids killed in a single attack since 2022. Russia targeted playgrounds in an ordinary residential area. With a cluster warhead to maximize casualties," Sybiha added
The UN Security Council and OSCE meetings "will help to advance peace efforts and accountability" and will take place on April 8
Sybiha also called for "a robust international response to Russian atrocities" and emphasized the need for "both strong condemnation and firm action."
Russia's strike comes amidst recent U.S.-led peace talks. Ukraine has already agreed to a U.S.-proposed full 30-day ceasefire
"Russia must cease its terror against Ukrainian children and civilians and respond to the ceasefire proposal," Sybiha concluded

President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Ukraine's Western allies on April 6 that more needs to be done to stop Russian aggression
stressing that "the pressure on Russia is still not enough."
"The number of air attacks is growing," Zelensky said in a Telegram post after a Russian missile strike on Kyiv killed one and wounded three overnight
"This is Russia's way of showing its true intentions – to continue terror as long as the world allows it."
Zelensky’s call for action from Western allies comes as the U.S
continues its efforts to end the war at any cost by pushing both sides toward a rushed peace deal
It remains unclear whether Europe could support Ukraine on its own if Washington were to suspend its military aid and intelligence sharing again
Russian troops have launched over 1,460 aerial bombs
and over 30 missiles of various types against Ukraine during the past week
On April 4, a Russian missile strike on the city of Kryvyi Rih – Zelensky's hometown –killed 19, including nine children, the local authorities said
Four more children who were injured during the attack are in serious condition at the hospital
"Every strike is against our people and children," Zelensky said in the Telegram post
"(Russian troops) are fighting against children playing in playgrounds."
Reacting to the U.S. Embassy's response to the Kryvyi Rih attack, Zelensky said on April 5 that it was "unpleasantly surprising," criticizing Ambassador Bridget Brink for not denouncing Russia
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also insisted in an April 6 post on X that it was "time for more pressure on Moscow," saying that Russia's only response to the United States' full ceasefire proposal has been more missile

Ukrainian deep-strike drones hit Russian fiber-optic and explosives factories on the night of April 4
The strikes targeted factories in Samara and Mordovia oblasts
A source with the Ukrainian State Security Service (SBU) confirmed to the Kyiv Independent that they were behind at least the strikes in Samara Oblast
"SBU strike drones attacked 'Promsintez' in Chapayevsk
The factory is one of the leading manufacturers of explosives in the Russian Federation and the Commonwealth of Independent States," writes a source in the SBU
who said their drones hit the factory 20 times
the leadership of the factory have stopped their technological processes."
Footage from local media show attacks on Saransk in Moravia Oblast the same night. One local source identified the building hit as a factory belonging to a company called "Fiber Optic Systems."
Russian investigative outlet Insider identifies Fiber Optic Systems as the main producer of optical fiber in Russia. Fiber-optic drones are resistant to electronic warfare interference. Russia's mass production of such drones has greatly enhanced the offensive power of the Russian military, most notably in their recent recapture of territory in Kursk Oblast
Insider similarly identified Fiber Optic Systems as a remarkably effective link in the chain providing Russia with foreign-derived components for its war machine
The governors of both oblasts announced no casualties as a result of the strikes
"the SBU is continuing to work precisely through Russian businesses
that are part of the military-industrial complex and produce weapons for the war against Ukraine
Such objects are absolutely legal military targets."
Ukraine has invested heavily in its long-range strike drone programs
