Andy Makiv has been appointed as Godolphin Australia's new managing director
who has worked in various roles at the company in Victoria
becomes the third head of the operation that has had a major presence in Australia since 2008
and replaces Vin Cox after he departed Godolphin Australia last October to take up the role as Yulong's general manager
"It is a new phase in my career and it has been a very 'Godolphin' career," Makiv told ANZ Bloodstock News
"I'm honored to be part of such a dynamic organization
I'm excited to continue working with our great people
and world-class facilities as we pursue further success both on the track and with our stallion roster."
Having joined Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's global operation as a nominations manager of Darley Victoria in 2008
Makiv was then promoted to general manager in the state and was most recently the company's head of sales
Flying the flag for Godolphin on the track this season are some ultra-talented homebreds in the shape of dual group 1-winning juvenile Broadsiding
last weekend's Run To The Rose (G2) winner Traffic Warden

As with any new appointment changes are likely to ensue
but Makiv is conscious to keep the status quo of how Godolphin produces future successful stallions and broodmares
"I am very conscious we are an operation that starts on the studs
we are in the stallion business and starts with great stud managers and their teams that look after the broodmares
the foals and it is on the farm that we start the education process," he said
"The racing stable then takes that on after that
and horses like Traffic Warden and Broadsiding
are testament to the fact we are getting it right on the farms and at the racing stables
and hopefully the cycle of stallions and great broodmare continues."
eight of which stand at Darley's Northwood Park base in Victoria
while New South Wales' Kelvinside is home to nine of the operation's inmates
including multiple group 1-winning champion Anamoe
whose first foals are hitting the ground this season
"We have a young stallion roster," he said
"We are in a transition phase—the great stallions like Exceed And Excel
so the next phase for us is very much Anamoe
"But we are having a really good run this spring with horses by Harry Angel and Street Boss and we have a great colt by Too Darn Hot
we have one of his dual group 1-winning sons in the wings
We think the future looks really bright and we are excited about what is ahead."
Anamoe's sire Street Boss is very much leading the way and has enjoyed a blistering start to the season
with his 12 winners from 52 starters headed by Memsie Stakes (G1) scorer Pinstriped
"I think Street Boss is the best value stallion in the country
Pericles is the favorite in group 1 this Saturday
Another Wil is one of the favorites for the Toorak in a couple of weeks
and Traffic Warden is one of the favorites for the Golden Rose," he said

Godolphin Australia have today issued a statement announcing their decision to switch to a public training model from the start of the new racing season
James Cummings has been Godolphin's private trainer for eight years and has also announced plans to become a public trainer from August 1
Cummings will continue to train some horses for Godolphin with the all-powerful racing and breeding organisation revealing their plan to spread their team among a number of different trainers "in line with operating structures used by other major owners and breeders in Australia"
Cummings and Godolphin Australia Managing Director Andy Makiv said the move would ensure a strong presence for Godolphin in Australia
but the change would provide greater flexibility for the business
"The private training model that we first adopted after the purchase of Woodlands in 2007 with successive trainers
John O'Shea and now James Cummings for the past eight years has proven to be very successful,'' Makiv said
"Moving away from a private training model gives us greater business agility
We will continue to have the same number of horses in training — it's fundamental to what we do
Briadsiding and Cylinder have all come through our commitment to racing
"Our numbers have and will remain stable
just as they have been for the past five years."
Makiv said Godolphin's decision coincided with the conclusion of Cummings' current contract
and the trainer's own plans to expand his business
"James is a fantastic trainer and has been incredibly successful," Makiv said
"He brought up his 50th Group I win late last year and we are extremely grateful for his leadership of our wonderful racing team who have supported him
"We are looking forward to working with James under our new training model
Cummings was the mastermind behind Australian Horse of the Year Anamoe
who won nine Group I races for Godolphin and he is justifiably proud of his achievements to date and excited about the next phase of his career
"The time is right for me to take the next step in my career and launch my own venture as a public trainer,'' Cummings said
"I've been fortunate to work with exceptional horses and a dedicated team during my time at Godolphin
and together we've celebrated many memorable successes
"This experience has been incredibly rewarding and has taught me invaluable lessons
"I'm deeply grateful to Godolphin for their ongoing support
and I look forward with great anticipation to this exciting new chapter."

Jamie Kah has her best chance of securing her first Cox Plate after she was confirmed to ride super colt Broadsiding at 49.5 kilograms for the Godolphin team in Saturday week's $5 million feature
Godolphin Australia's managing director Andy Makiv confirmed the booking on Tuesday morning
saying the stable is delighted to have a rider of Kah's quality to partner the three-time Group 1 winner
"We're pleased to have booked Jamie as she's won on the horse
so we're hoping for a good outcome for both horse and rider," Makiv said
"The Cox Plate has always been a bit of a target race for him
We hoped he'd get there through the Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas
He won the first and then things didn't go his way at Caulfield
so he goes into the Cox Plate third-up without a gut-buster and he goes into the race in great shape."
Kah has only ridden twice in the Cox Plate
She finished fourth on $6.50 chance Zaaki in 2022 behind Godolphin horse Anamoe
while her first ride in the race came in 2020 when she rode import Buckhurst ($26) into 10th place
Kah is currently still serving a suspension but returns on Saturday to ride the three-year-old Traffic Warden for the Godolphin team in the $20 million The Everest at Randwick
Broadsiding is viewed as being one of the leading four chances for the Cox Plate
with the colt rated a $5.50 chance with Sportsbet behind Japanese horse Prognosis ($4)
Yulong mare Via Sistina ($4.50) and exciting front runner Pride Of Jenni ($4.80)

In April 2016, Kermadec was bought by Darley and would take up residency at its Kelvinside property in New South Wales, alongside Teofilo, among others.
Kermadec has done a tremendous job at stud, and on the weekend, he celebrated his seventh individual stakes winner and fourth Group 1 scorer when the Kris Lees-trained Amokura made light work of her rivals in the Queensland Oaks.
The stallion’s headline act has been Montefilia - a four-time Group 1 heroine. She won in top company at 1600 metres, 2000 metres (twice) and 2400 metres and was recently purchased by Yulong Investments for $3.4 million at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale.
Kermadec has a Group 2 victor - Trobriand, another Group 1 mile hero - Tuvalu, and his ultra-talented, now-retired daughter Willowy was victorious in the 2500-metre G1 VRC Oaks in 2021.

Singapore’s reigning Horse of the Year, Lim’s Kosciuszko, is by Kermadec and he has chalked up Listed successes at 1200 metres, 1600 metres and 1800 metres.
Following Amokura’s Oaks triumph at Eagle Farm on Saturday, TDN AusNZ caught up with Darley Australia’s Head of Sales, Andy Makiv, and he was quick to highlight how well-rounded Kermadec is and how tough his progeny are.
“He is a very versatile stallion. I think he’s really playing out the right way and trending the right way,” Makiv said.
“He’s doing an amazing job. He’s a pretty exciting prospect, I would have thought.
“He has four racing crops, really, and only really three older crops. Although he’s had a Group 2-winning 2-year-old (Trobriand) this season in New Zealand, he’s obviously better-known as a stallion that gets horses more in their 3-year-old and 4-year-old years.
“He’s got a 5-year-old crop, a 4-year-old crop and a 3-year-old crop and he’s got four Group 1 winners amongst them, which is really extraordinary.
“Montefilia was very sound; she went on to race successfully at four and five. Tuvalu’s been a very good, sound horse, who won a Toorak Handicap as a 4-year-old. They’re a good, sound breed.”
Kermadec, who relocated from Darley’s Hunter Valley base in New South Wales to Northwood Park in Victoria in 2021, will stand at an unchanged fee of $16,500 (inc GST) in 2023.
“I think for the price, he’s ridiculous value,” Makiv added.

“Just doing some comparisons… you always look at the marketplace and where your stallions compare and where they’re headed… we (Godolphin Australia) recently bought a share in Proisir, who is a proper stallion; at the same stage of their career, Kermadec is well in front.
“He’s (Kermadec) a really exciting prospect in that space and a similar stallion in some respects; he came off a low base. He’s now a $80,000 stallion, Proisir. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kermadec trends that way.
“He’s ahead of a horse like Shamus Award at the same stage of his career. At this point, Shamus had had three Group 1 winners, Kermadec’s had four. Shamus has now got five. So, he’s trending in that space where we’re talking about horses in that $70,000-80,000 bracket and Kermadec’s there at $15,000 (before GST).
“There’s probably an opportunity for breeders to get on board while he is in that price point, before he potentially does head north in terms of his fee.”
A star shuttle sire, Teofilo himself stood at Darley in Australia, arriving for what would be the first of nine years Down Under in 2009. Health and fertility issues limited him to six seasons in the Southern Hemisphere, however, and he is now permanently based at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Ireland.
A son of the legendary Galileo (Ire), Teofilo made an indelible mark in Australia, especially through the deeds of Humidor (NZ), Happy Clapper and Palentino - both multiple Group 1 heroes, while imports Cross Counter (GB) and Twilight Payment (Ire) both raced to glory in the G1 Melbourne Cup.
With that in mind, combined with Kermadec’s race profile, it’s little wonder he finds himself on Darley’s star-studded roster.
“We obviously stood Teofilo, he was a wonderful stallion for us here in Australia,” Makiv explained. “Fertility held him back from shuttling in his latter years, but he was a wonderful stallion.
“When Kermadec became a prospect, the fact he was by Teofilo appealed to us.
“We loved him as a yearling, Kermadec, he was in Teofilo’s first crop. He was just a beautiful yearling and sold well.”
Kermadec was consigned by Wentwood Grange and purchased for NZ$260,000 by Mulcaster Bloodstock at the 2013 New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale - Book 1.
“He went on to be trained by Chris Waller and was a very good horse, becoming a dual Group 1 winner.
“We acquired him, we’ve stood him and really in a lot of ways he’s the heir apparent to Teofilo. We’re delighted to have him and delighted to see his progression.”

With Amokura only three and having had just six starts, Tuvalu still in training, Lim’s Kosciuszko showing no signs of slowing, exciting juvenile Trobriand having plenty of years ahead of him, as well as a number of other lightly raced progeny showing plenty of talent, there is much to look forward to when it comes to Kermadec.
“There’s plenty to be excited about. Lim’s Kosciuszko is a serious horse, Tuvalu is one of our better milers and we’ve got a real up-and-comer in the Oaks filly from last Saturday,” Makiv commented.
“One thing about Kermadec is when he gets one, they’re a real one. They’re significant races (his progeny win).
“There’s so much upside with this stallion; he’s a good-looking horse, he gets a great type and they sell really well.”
Kermadec covered 129 mares in his first season in 2016, 123 in 2019 and 120 last year, with his average across seven seasons being 95.
