Ukrainian architectural photographer Dmytro Soloviovs has spent years travelling through his country
on a mission to document its remaining Soviet-era buildings and preserve the nation’s modernist heritage in the face of war
the artist has put together a 240-page book called Ukrainian Modernism
Soloviovs chronicles Ukraine’s varied Modernist history from avant-garde constructivism to late Soviet Brutalism
“I travelled from the war-torn eastern regions of Kharkiv and Sumy to the Carpathian mountains in the west to document these structures
including masterpieces like the Kyiv Crematorium and Saliut Hotel
alongside previously undocumented gems such as the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal and the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station,” the photographer said in his Instagram announcement
The volume spans 240 pages and documents over 120 structures
ranging from iconic landmarks such as the Kyiv Crematorium and Salut Hotel to lesser-known sites like the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station and the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal
designed during a time of state-led experimentation in form and function
combine utilitarian purpose with distinct formal and material innovation
While focusing on their distinct architectural elements
Soloviov’s photographs also spotlight the buildings’ monumental mosaics
and sculptural reliefs that artfully become integral to the identity of these spaces

Modernist architecture in Ukraine holds a complex place in the collective consciousness
While some of these structures are celebrated for their striking formal design
many others are neither listed nor safeguarded
