April 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Asiana Airlines Inc
on Friday came under fire for mislabeling two Ukrainian cities as part of Russia on its in-flight infotainment system
drawing criticism from Ukrainian nationals and social media users
According to a passenger who shared a photo on Instagram
the cities of Dnipro (formerly Dnepropetrovsk) and Donetsk appeared under Russian territory on the airline's digital map
The labeling is not found on Asiana's official website
suggesting the issue may be limited to the in-flight entertainment platform
the Ukrainian passenger who uploaded the photo on social media
told Yonhap News Agency that the photo was taken Wednesday on an Incheon-London flight
"A lot of Ukrainians lost their loved ones who went to defend those cities
and seeing it labeled as Russian territory was very painful."
Romaniv said she notified Asiana Airlines of the blunder via social media "but (I) haven't gotten a response yet."
The controversy has prompted angry responses on social media platform X
"So now South Korean airlines are siding with Russia
"It might be better to see that they're actually trying to fix this; otherwise
Asiana Airlines was recently acquired by local industry leader Korean Air Lines Co
The company has acknowledged the error in its in-flight map and said it has immediately requested the outside software developer to correct the issue
The supplier of the in-flight infotainment system was known to be a unit of Japan's Panasonic Holdings Corp
Ukraine has been engaged in war with Russia since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022
remains under Russian occupation but is internationally recognized as part of Ukrainian territory

citizens pledged allegiance to the flag for the first time Tuesday
Genesee Country Village & Museum welcomed 47 new citizens for its annual Fourth of July naturalization ceremony
New citizens from as near as Canada and as far as Ukraine received their certificates of naturalization alongside friends and family
"I was kind of always dragging my feet to be actually become a citizen
I was always saying that you have to be ready for it
It wasn’t just not for the paperwork actually
The Romanivs have been on their citizenship journey for more than a decade in Rochester
but their connection to Ukraine remains strong amid the ongoing war
“I have friends who are currently in the war right now," Zoreslav said
"We're still related to it even though we’re so far away.”
It took Monika Gajdek more than 10 years to earn her U.S
to play tennis for college and I just went back home to Poland thinking I will not come again," Gajdek said
"I applied with my best friend in college just hoping it will come one day.”
After coming to Rochester for a medical residency
along with her husband and their three kids
she's excited to be a part of the area's newest cohort of citizens
“I feel I belong here and it’s finally official," Gajdek said
It’s just it’s another level of me living here.”
I arrived in Japan for a one-semester Japanese language program
It was my first time ever traveling abroad
It was also the first time I learned that most Japanese people know very little about my home country
When I would introduce myself as a Ukrainian
there were many Japanese people that would
despite the fact that I had never even been to Russia
Ukrainian history and art were either mistakenly attributed to Russia or completely unknown
As I found myself repeatedly explaining to people that Ukraine is not Russia
I wondered how these flawed views came to be in the first place
has often been viewed in Japan as a country entirely within Russia’s sphere of influence
One reason for this is that Japan has largely learned about Ukraine through information disseminated by Imperial Russia
has historically suppressed Ukraine’s voice while positioning itself as the sole spokesperson for the country
Russian narratives then made their way into publications and became widely reflected in media
I was again confronted with the reality of how dangerous Russia’s distorted history and propaganda about Ukraine can be
Russia occupied Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula
and later seized part of the Donbas region in the east of our country
While the Japanese government criticized Russia and imposed economic sanctions
the Japanese media at the time failed to sufficiently analyze information coming from Ukraine and instead unquestioningly accepted the information coming from Russia
Russian fake narratives—such as that Crimea is historically Russian
that Ukrainians and Russians are “family nations,” and that Russian speakers in Ukraine are Russian—were often broadcast without scrutiny
and Japanese people began to forget about the prolonged war between Ukraine and Russia
Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine
The Japanese government immediately expressed its support for Ukraine
and explicitly condemned Russia for attempting to unilaterally alter the status quo through force
I still clearly recall how powerfully symbolic Prime Minister Kishida Fumio’s words were in showing support for Ukraine in February 2023 when he said
“Today’s Ukraine may be tomorrow’s East Asia.”
The Japanese media’s reporting was significantly different this time
perhaps because of their lessons learned in the years since 2014
They brought attention to Russia’s war crimes and Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis with real-time reporting from the ground
and even featured insights from a few Japanese scholars specializing in Ukraine
I was receiving an unprecedented number of translation requests from various Japanese media companies
I was deeply involved in television news and program production almost daily
These programs covered not only the situation in Ukraine but also historical and cultural interpretations
the harsh measures Russia had imposed on Ukraine (such as the history of the prohibition of the Ukrainian language) and a wide range of other topics
The contrast with the coverage a decade earlier was striking
A sign thanking Japan for its support of Ukraine in Shinjuku
One of the most symbolic changes was the decision by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to switch from using the Russian name Kiev (transcribed as キエフ in Japanese) for Ukraine’s capital to the Ukrainian Kyiv (キーウ)
with other geographical names also updated from Russian to Ukrainian: Odessa (オデッサ) became Odesa (オデーサ)
Chernobyl (チェルノブイリ) became Chornobyl (チョルノービリ)
I was genuinely happy to witness this shift
and in that moment I truly felt that Japan’s view of Ukraine had transformed
Ukraine went from a country they knew little about to one that they were familiar with
I have lived in Japan since 2012 and currently teach at a university
Ukrainian studies were almost nonexistent in Japanese academia
Even in educational institutions specializing in Eastern and Central European studies
matters on Ukraine were largely viewed through a Russian lens
and were not considered from a global perspective
among the approximately 800 universities in Japan
there were only a handful of universities that had introduced the Ukrainian language as a subject prior to 2022
one must first learn to read and write in its language
understanding its history and social realities is difficult
spreading Ukraine’s history and language will foster a more accurate perception of the country; even more
it will strengthen international cooperation in resisting Russia’s ambitions to reshape the global order
I’ve become increasingly convinced of this
How could I sustain and increase people’s interest in Ukraine
The answer began to take shape through an open lecture I started giving at the university where I’m employed
called “History and Culture of Ukraine.” I’ve given this lecture annually since 2022
I finally feel that a time has come where Ukrainians are able tell their own story
The author presents a lecture on Ukrainian history and culture at Ibaraki Christian University in October 2023
The author’s Nihon ga shiranai Ukuraina (Ukraine Unknown to Japan) is now in Japanese readers’ hands
I once asked a 70-year old woman who attended why she was interested in the course
“I started helping the people of Ukraine
but I didn’t know much about their land
I ought to understand it.” Her simple words moved me deeply and reassured me that steady progress was being made
Another promising development is the increasing number of publications on Ukraine
and numerous other translations across various genres
This trend is greatly contributing to a real understanding of Ukrainian identity
interactions between Ukrainian and Japanese people have steadily deepened
there are about 4,000 Ukrainians living in Japan
with half having evacuated with the support of the Japanese government
These Ukrainians are participating in international exchange events held across Japan and organizing exhibits and gatherings to support Ukraine
One notable example is Stand with Ukraine Japan (SWU Japan)
a group founded mainly by Ukrainians living here
They gather twice a month in Tokyo with the support of Japanese allies
Participants gather to hold peace demonstrations
carrying antiwar placards and Ukrainian flags
A woman carries a Ukrainian flag in support of the country at a well-attended November 2024 event in Shinjuku
Another important group is the NPO Kraiany
which has the longest history among groups promoting exchange between Japanese and Ukrainian people
hosted an event which I attended and that drew many Japanese visitors
said: “Ukrainians teach me about their history and culture
our interaction is deepening.” Such dedicated efforts are undoubtedly bearing fruit
The Japanese perception of Ukraine is gradually evolving to one of a nation fighting for its freedom and independence
The process of knowing and understanding a country takes time
but we must remember that relations between countries always begins from personal connections
I would like to express my sincere gratitude as a Ukrainian to the people of Japan

Experts share their advice for getting rid of complex stains
We have covered stain removal earlier in this series
as it’s based on readers’ requests for specific
a laundry expert from the consultancy group LTC Worldwide
recommends testing garments for colourfastness before you attempt any stain removal
He says to pick an area of the garment that can’t be seen
Apply whatever stain removal technique you were going to attempt with a white cloth and see if any colour transfers
he says to “give it to a professional cleaner to remove the stain”
you’ll remember that different fabrics react to stains in different ways
and so when dealing with a spill it’s important to check the fabric composition of your garment and the composition of the stain
She warns that ink stains can spread when they get wet, so it’s important to place something absorbent underneath the garment and dab the marks with a small amount of alcohol applied to a white cloth. Anderton adds that you should surround the stain “with a small circle of glycerine to form a protective barrier around (but not over) the stain”. This should contain the stain and can be blotted off afterwards.
Anderton suggests using a product specifically designed to remove ink stains. These can be purchased at most supermarkets, but he warns to “follow the directions carefully”.
According to Anderton, the reason turmeric is so difficult to remove is because the tiny powder particles are slightly oily, so they tend to penetrate fabric. “This prevents simple, water-based stain removers for natural dyes getting to the root of the discolouration,” he says.
Instead, start by blotting (not rubbing) the stain using a clean, white cloth to remove any excess and contain the spread.
Then he says to make a concoction of two tablespoons of white vinegar to one tablespoon of washing-up liquid and stir. Add one teaspoonful of a good-quality colour detergent and stir quickly. While the mixture is still frothing, cover the stain with it and use the back of a spoon to ensure the mixture fully penetrates the fabric and stain. Leave it like this for half an hour, then rinse thoroughly in clean, cold water.
Hopefully, the stain will be flushed away, but if there is any stain shadow remaining, he says to “apply a little bleaching powder” – preferably one that contains sodium percarbonate – “as a thin paste”. Leave it for five to 10 minutes and then flush it off.
Anderton says black grease stains tend to be made up of tiny dark particles in the mineral oil or grease. So the key to removing these stains is to remove the grease and the dark particles simultaneously.
If the grease is stripped out first, you risk the dark particles becoming locked in the yarns of the material. Once this happens they can be impossible to remove.
“You need a mixture of strong organic solvents (to dissolve the grease), a powerful liquid detergent (to lubricate and aid grease removal) and some suspending agent (to wrap around the particles and carry them safely away),” he says. Anderton suggests using a specific grease stain remover.

he says “you will need to lay the stain over a clean white cloth pad and dab it repeatedly with a second clean white cloth
applying a little white spirit from time to time
Reitano says the issue with sunscreen stains is one ingredient that oxidises in hard water
That’s why sunscreen stains often “appear after you have thrown a sunscreen-soaked top into the wash”
try washing it as per a grease stain [with dishwashing detergent] then like a rust stain – with lemon juice and salt,” she says
Reitano recommends diluting a few drops of eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle of water
Use the cloth to gently dab at the stain until it is lifted from the fabric

Photograph: Karl-Hendrik Tittel/Getty Images/iStockphotoAnderton suggests applying a little “neutral lubricating detergent to the stain” and carefully working it into the fabric until you have created a foam that has been mixed into every bit of the stain
Let this sit for five to 10 minutes and then carefully blot the stain using a clean white cotton cloth
The reality is not every stain is possible to remove
But this doesn’t mean the garment is ruined
or getting a tailor to remove stained sleeves
It might also be possible to dye the garment using an at-home kit, or by mailing it to Cullachange – the only professional re-dyeing service in Australia
Finally, you could get creative with visible mending techniques including embroidery or patches.

a director within the Saskatchewan-Ukraine Response Team
said the provincial government’s focus at this time is now ensuring the new residents can find their footing in a new home
“We just want to make sure every single person on that plane has what they need,” said Patrick
Several non-governmental groups were also present
providing help in setting up fresh bank accounts
changing SIM cards and picking up a city transit pass
Among them was the Regina Open Door Society and
all of whom recently relocated to Saskatchewan themselves
Like volunteers Yuliia Krutholova and Oksana Klepikova
who both said offering their ears and tongues as interpreters was a choice close to heart
Krutholova and her younger teenage sister arrived in Regina three weeks ago
with the help of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress
Both are residing with a host family in Regina
which she said has been a big support in navigating the transition

“We know what first steps they have to do here.”
According to settlement co-ordinator Liuba Krupina
from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan
at least half of the new temporary residents arriving from Ukraine are looking to settle in the province
Others are seeking to relocate to other provinces
and some even changed their minds upon arriving in Regina and have decided to forgo other plans and remain in the city
“Most of them know or have a plan what to do next,” said Krupina
The UCC is still working with many clients overseas
and anticipates seeing more displaced Ukrainians seeking a new home in Canada moving forward
“The hope is that they choose to stay in our province for the long term and make a home here,” said Patrick

she felt comfortable relocating her family to Saskatchewan
it was because of the province’s large Ukrainian community and the support it could offer

Experts share their advice on how to soak and spot-clean without ruining your clothes – and it involves a hefty amount of caution
Bleach is an intimidating laundry product
It comes with the vague threat that it might ruin your clothes
it smells like a swimming pool and just generally feels like something that shouldn’t be poured into waterways
But it is a great tool for keeping white clothes white – a never-ending odyssey
a fashion lecturer at Queensland University of Technology
“I have heard lots of horror stories about garments turning yellow or being eaten away,” she says
“I generally speak to my trusted dry cleaner before using any bleach product at home
as they have a lot of knowledge about removing stains on different types of fabrics.”
Since not all materials are safe to bleach
the first step is to check the garment care label
The symbol for bleach is a solid triangle: an item that is safe to bleach will have one
a garment that should not be bleached will have one with a cross through the triangle
View image in fullscreenThe triangle is the symbol of bleach – a line through it means the item should not be bleached. Photograph: Carolyn Jenkins/AlamyThe care label will also tell you whether the garment has to be machine or handwashed and the temperature at which an item can be safely washed. For best results use the highest temperature available.
If you try to bleach animal fibres like wool, silk, cashmere or leather, you risk ruining the garment. Similarly, elastane and spandex will be damaged by bleach, says Rebecca Van Amber, a textile scientist at RMIT University. “Only natural cellulose fibres or synthetic fibres can be bleached.”
Read moreFabrics that are safe to bleach include cotton
Unless you are confidently chasing a tie-dye look
Van Amber suggests never using bleach to change a garment’s colour
“[It] can be quite unpredictable and may result in a patchy look.”
“It’s a good idea to avoid using bleach on clothes that have decorative prints or details,” Mellick says
“Bleach can cause these to fade or become damaged.”
there are two types of bleach: a chlorine bleach and non-chlorine bleach
[which is also called] oxygen bleach,” Mellick says
Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning
as the wrong bleach can damage materials and not all bleach is safe to use on fabric
Mellick suggests consulting your dry cleaner
“I spoke to a dry cleaner [about refreshing a white polyester and silk skirt] to see what could be done and they suggested using oxygen bleach because chlorine bleach would cause the polyester to go yellow,” she says
“I soaked the skirt multiple times in oxygen bleach and the staining slowly came out – but it was a labour of love.”
View image in fullscreenOxygen bleach can be used to clean coloured garments – but you might want to check that the fabric is colourfast before you soak
Photograph: Bowonpat Sakaew/Getty Images/EyeEmTo test whether a coloured garment is colourfast
white cloth against the garment to see if it picks up any colour – a colourfast garment won’t stain the cloth
“Bleach can be used to brighten old fabrics that have yellowed or become dingy over time,” Mellick says
“Always follow the instructions on the [bleach bottle]
which generally include diluting the bleach with water and soaking the fabric for a short period
the ratio should generally be about 15 to 20 millilitres of bleach to one litre of water
but this might vary depending on how you are using it
View image in fullscreenAlways follow the instructions on the bleach bottle when you’re brightening up your white clothing
Photograph: Paul Burley Photography/Getty ImagesBleach can also be added directly to your washing machine
add between one-third or two-thirds of a cup to the machine’s bleach dispenser
pour the diluted bleach directly into the load about five minutes into the cycle
If you are bleaching a particularly precious garment
it might be worth doing a test on a small inconspicuous area to see what happens before proceeding
you could gently spot-clean the area with a small amount of bleach,” Van Amber says
She’s done so successfully herself: “I recently used a Q-tip soaked in a diluted bleach solution … I then rinsed the area thoroughly.”
Mellick suggests using oxygen bleach in powder form
Make a paste out of it with a little bit of water
This can be spread over the affected areas of a garment
wash the garment in the washing machine with laundry detergent and repeat the process if necessary
View image in fullscreenMake sure you use the right protective equipment – wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area when bleaching
Photograph: Stephen VanHorn/AlamySince bleach can be harmful to bare skin or when inhaled
Van Amber suggests to always wear gloves and protective glasses
and work in a well-ventilated area when using it
“Bleach is considered harmful to the environment
so the best advice is to minimise and reduce the use of bleach wherever possible.”
Mellick says it’s best to avoid using bleach altogether

Amidst all the glass-cutting and grinding of the Rochester region’s many optics-related companies
Sydor Optics has carved out has its own niche
The Chili-based company makes precision optical components and specializes in “flat” optics
Sydor’s products include filters used in three-dimension movies
medical research filers and optics used for DNA sequencing
We’ll let company president Jim Sydor explain the difference
“Our associates … concentrate on lenses and lens systems
Sydor estimated that there are 85 optics-related companies in the area
Rochester has always been big on optics because of once-mighty local corporate giants like Eastman Kodak Co.
While those business behemoths were seemingly all powerful in the past
Sydor sees a strong future in photonics and the buzzworthy Photonics Institute planned for downtown
“Rochester is the optics capital of the world,” said Sydor
who is involved with some of the planning through the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council
we’re hoping to become ‘Photonics Valley,’ like Silicon Valley in the 1970s
and now we’re going to be doing the same thing with photons — making glass chips with photons.”
The father had quite an interesting career in the industry before venturing out on his own
Stefan worked at Kodak and then at Bausch & Lomb during World War II
he worked on the 200-inch telescope mirror at Mt
Stefan Sydor was involved with building cameras to track the earliest satellites and space capsules
he had fabulous stories that I shared during ‘show and tell.’ I was very proud of it.”
Stefan Sydor started his own company at age 50
The business started in a 3,000-square-foot building on University Avenue before moving to a new facility on Blossom Road in 1968 and finally to Chili in 2006
Jim Sydor helped out as a kid with tasks like painting the walls and cleaning the floors
Jim Sydor went through Monroe Community College’s optical program and worked at optical firms in Buffalo and Connecticut before launching into full-time work with his dad
Jim Sydor became president when his father died in 1992
Sydor Optics’ big customers include firms like Corning
Semrock (which makes optical filters) and “all the national labs
like Los Alamos in New Mexico.” Sydor manufactures military optics for drones and puts out 15,000 filters annually that are used in Panavision cameras
tight-knit group unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else
Sydor is excited about the “new wave” of photonics that has been hotly discussed
and so much more of the technological revolution that has changed the world
but first we have to invent the stuff,” Sydor said
I just hope the politics don’t screw it up.”

hosted the opening of the photo exhibition «One Day in the Life..
A Story of the Unbreakable Ukrainian Spirit»
Veterans and volunteers from different brigades
photographers and university representatives gathered in the hall
Visitors were observing the pictures which told more than any words
looking at the stories frozen in the frame
emphasised that this exhibition reveals the power of the veteran’s spirit
The photographs depict people of different ages and experiences
but they are united by a common challenge – the war
– This exhibition could not cover all those who we call veterans
The exhibition was created by such photographers as Oleh Ohorodnyk
it became possible to see the stories of those who returned from the front
who lost a part of themselves but did not break down
poems dedicated to the warriors were recited and songs were played
adding even more profoundness to the photographs
The atmosphere of the event was filled with emotions and a sense of deep gratitude to those who have defended and are defending Ukraine
The event was hosted by Tetiana Shapovalova
who warmly and insightfully accompanied the program
empowering the words with a special meaning
a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between Lviv Polytechnic
the 125th separate territorial defence brigade and the commander of the LMTC LION Volunteer Formation No
This once again confirmed the importance of the relationships between the student community and the military
The photo exhibition left a lasting impression
It reminded everyone that the history of the struggle continues
and it is our duty to remember those who are writing it

Tennis Australia has banned Russian and Belarusian flags from the Australian Open after a Russian flag was flown at a Ukrainian tennis player’s match at the Australian Open on Monday
“Our initial policy was that fans could bring them in but could not use them to cause disruption
Yesterday we had an incident where a flag was placed courtside,” a Tennis Australia statement announcing the ban read
The flag ban comes after Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia
urged Tennis Australia to take swift action after the flag was flown by spectators during the first-round match between Ukraine’s Kateryna Baindl and Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova
