Learned to drive on my parent’s 1978 VW Bus and 1982 VW Rabbit Diesel
probably since my parents always drove Volkswagens
I started with VWs and Audis (1980s models)
It doesn’t hurt that my last name is Swedish
so I kind of felt some Minnesota-style Scandinavian pride
I purchased a POS 1984 Volvo 240 turbo sedan when I still lived in Minnesota in the late 1990s
but that was a cool car and so different from a VW
I replaced the Volvo with a 1987 Saab 900 SPG which also ended up rusting away
but that was easily the top-three favorite cars I’ve even owned
I immediately purchased a 1991 Saab 9000 Turbo 5-speed
I was going to give the sedan to my ex-girlfriend to use
but the sedan started on fire less than a mile after she started following me home from purchasing the wagon
The car has just enough power to be interesting while still somewhat good MPG on highway trips
It has some sense of sporty feeling but is very comfy
It has the fantastic 2.3 liter B235R turbocharged four-cylinder with 250hp & 258 lb/ft torque
and modern-day tires give it a ton of grip in the corners without having to upgrade the suspension
I wish there was an Alfa Romeo Giulia station wagon instead of a Stelvio SUV
That would be the perfect replacement for this car
the handling is much sportier (yet still comfortable) which is to be expected since the Aero is Saab’s sporty model and the XC is Volvo’s crossover model
The Saab’s engine has significantly more power and torque yet gets better MPG than the XC
The Saab is quieter at highway speeds as well
I probably should not say this on Autopian
but the Saab has a timing chain versus the Volvos’ timing belts
Much better traction in wet weather and snow thanks to the AWD
individual spark plug coils vs the Saab’s “DI cassette”
and cheaper parts/better parts availability
The Volvos are also generally easier to work on
Volvos have fantastic paint (much better quality compared to the Saabs)
It looks the same as when I purchased it @ only 122K miles – the clearcoat on the hood isn’t peeling but is really thin
and had a local Saab specialist replace practically all A/C refrigerant seals to get the A/C to hold a charge
I overpaid for it due to Covid used car prices
and am not happy with how much more money I’ve invested in it
I need to replace the engine subframe mounts with urethane replacements (very common 9-5 issue) and fix some oil leaks from the oil cooler lines but then I’ll finally be done resuscitating the car
Maybe I’ll get around to replacing some rear suspension bushings that are well-known to create negative camber & squat specifically on the Aero wagons
I was a Saab owner in the early 2000s and it was completely different back then
which are plentiful at the pick-n-pull yards here in Oregon
There are definitely some parts I’d like to purchase that are no longer made
When I replaced the front struts for example
I was disappointed at the options of shocks too
The Bilsteins I ended up with seem softer than the OEM Sachs parts that are no longer available
I bought it at an auction in September 2018
I was looking for a replacement vehicle for my best friend
She was previously driving a 1992 Volvo 740 Turbo wagon that I picked out for her years prior
I was trying to choose from a wide variety of vehicles at that particular auction: Toyota Matrix
I had flipped a similar XC70 a year earlier
The interior is almost exactly the same as the R
and instrument cluster that has the special blue background
The front seating area seems more spacious than the Saab
Swedish ergonomics are great for all three
They really are very similar in so many aspects
all three wagons use the Aisin AW55 five-speed transmission that was in tons of other vehicles like Nissan
This one is much tamer than either of the others
It is not particularly enjoyable to drive fast
and the suspension bounces and dives even with new OEM struts
it is by far the most capable driving in the snow
it is not very sporty or fun to drive fast
especially with the Aisin automatic transmission
I wish it had more turbo boost for more power and midrange torque
but that is what happens when you buy a 212k mile basket case for $1,300 at an auction: I had full intentions of buying cheap
I think this is going to be my long-term backup vehicle after I jettison the Saab
I’ll likely use the wagon like most people use a spare pickup or SUV
I’ve had to do two-point turns in a parking garage ramps
It is also difficult to see overhead traffic lights
The seats don’t lower very much compared to the XC70
I am always extremely frustrated that Volvo limited the performance in first and second gears in cars with the five-speed automatic like mine
Per IPD: “2004-05 S60R and V70R models with Geartronic automatic transmissions are torque limited to 250lbs/ft of torque [out of 295] in 1st and 2nd gear
This severely reduces the standing start performance and results in a 0-60 time that is almost two seconds slower than the manual transmission version.”
The special “4C” Monroe shock absorbers are stupid expensive to replace
They cost $350 for each four corners of the car
I know that if you turn up the wick on the engine
the seals on one of the headlights were perished and the V07R/S60R have different headlights than all the other models
Figure at least $500 for a used xenon headlamp assembly
My guess is some other issues like the angle gear were replaced long before I owned the vehicle
I really haven’t invested much money into the car except for the PVC replacements
I should probably explain that I use a laptop with an old copy of Volvo’s Vida/DICE to diagnose my Volvos
Another trick that’s helped that I’ve done on the XC AND the V70R
Both of their Aisin AW55-51 transmissions started shifting really hard
slamming into gears when decelerating to a stop
I installed a brand-new transmission valve body from eBay designed for a Chevy/Saturn/Nissan which are significantly less expensive
I am convinced that the majority of P2 chassis Volvos are junked due to transmission problems that do NOT require removal or replacement or the transmission
The valve body can be replaced with the engine/transmission in place
You just have to separate the lower sub-frame from the transmission on one corner to get about two to three inches room to remove and replace
the traction on wet Pacific NW roads is great
There are not a lot of them left on the road
Those special 4C Monroe shocks are very hard-riding
amazingly different compared to the soft XC
The V70R feels different as soon as you open the driver’s door and realize how much lower it is to the ground
The engine performance is obviously different: the V70R is 300hp versus the 208hp of the XC
The V70R has much more turbo lag versus the low-pressure turbo of the XC70
even though they are both 2.5 liter five-cylinder engines
It has 183k miles on it and it has LA battle scars on the exterior
but it is getting rough around the edges for sure
I’m already in the process of selling it to the Polestar salesperson who sold me my Polestar 2
I learned to drive via my family’s Volkswagens
and prior to my Swedish fix had a Mercedes-Benz habit for many years
I owned a very high mileage (260K or so) 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E
and it was probably the best car I’ve ever owned
I had a w219 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG for many years
but longed for something that was more “tossable.” I was expecting I’d buy a used VW GTI and test drove one
The dealer had a used 2009 C63 AMG on the lot
so I asked if I could take it for a test drive
The steering was so much better than my W211 E55 AMG
the ride was just as bad as the GTI I had just driven
but the overall drive was much more communicative
I went home and researched the car more and it passed the test
The linearity of the power up to the redline of this engine is just fantastic
They just don’t make naturally aspirated DOHC V8s like this anymore
and you can completely turn off the traction and stability control
The engine and the transmission are properly refined
but never droning or too loud like some people say about the Stellantis V8s
this generation of C-class does not have the best interior and it was a very noticeable step down from my previous E55
Things like the climate control are exemplary
and it still has all the toys like power steering wheel adjustments
My E55 had the cushy Airmatic suspension that would float over pavement
These are highly underrated vehicles compared to a BMW M3
They have wonderful handling and are so balanced
and it still felt under-tired at the track
The suspension is pretty darn tough below highway speeds
It also used to kill new rear tires in less than 10K miles
I had an alignment specialist dial out the crazy rear wheel toe-in to get me as close to zero as possible
I wish it had a real limited-slip differential
especially since the pavement is wet so often in the Pacific NW
I replaced a thermostat (the car told me it was going bad
I had an independent M-B repair specialist replace a fuel pressure sensor for less than $400
I attempted to replace the valve cover gaskets
That wide engine is absolutely shoehorned in there
and my attempt to replace them made them leak worse
It was $1,000 in labor from the independent mechanic
Said mechanic said that even though my engine falls into the range of vehicles that have suspect head bolts
but it felt dumb using such a great car while sitting in stop and go traffic
so I purchased the Saab as my ‘beater’ so I didn’t put as many miles on the C63
I’ve only put on 22K since purchased in 2019
but still drive it regularly to keep it happy and fresh
and the price on the Kawi was just too good to pass up
It had been sitting at the dealer for a year
so they cut the price by over $1K (this was right at the start of Covid)
I read many reviews on it and felt it was exactly what I was looking for
My previous 2009 Triumph Street Triple R had been stolen the previous summer
so I felt like I finally needed a replacement
I have not had a motorcycle since way back in 1992
I bought a basket-case Suzuki GS850 after the salesperson told me it was what won the first Cannonball run
I only had it for a year or so before it died
The exhaust is louder than the non-Café Z900s and sounds fantastic
I love the helmet lock – so frickin’ convenient
All motorcycles should have one as standard equipment
I absolutely love twisty roads with decent pavement
Long highway slogs are not this bike’s best environment
The promotional deal
the Costco promotion changed the downpayment from $3K to $1K
I knew I didn’t want to drive the C63 for commuting
I ended up with a much more expensive model than the $300 lease
The vehicle architecture is based off of a gas-powered Volvo XC40
Similar to the Fiat 500e I owned previously
it was not designed from scratch as an EV platform
The steering wheel and the majority of the switchgear are identical to the Volvo parts
the seats are not as comfy as a Volvo – not even close
I have not had a brand-new vehicle since my 2013 Scion FR-S so just having a brand-new vehicle is a rush
this brand-new vehicle is so luxurious compared to a 2004 Saab
My number-one favorite thing is being able to use my cell phone app to preheat the car via climate control
heated seats and heated steering wheel prior to “starting” the car when it is cold outside
kind of had that feature: he spec’d the auxiliary ‘gas’ heater
You could preheat the Bus without starting the engine in the harsh Minnesota winters by twisting the green heater/timer dial on the dashboard
The interior space is cramped compared to the overall size of the vehicle
I’ve had to hard reset the infotainment twice
It is more like restarting a computer versus a car
I wish I could diagnose it like pulling fault codes on a regular vehicle
I always want something different than what the majority gets
I’m not proud that my Polestar was made in China but I weighed it with the fact that Volvo is exporting US-made vehicles to China
The Benz is definitely challenged traction-wise and the Polestar’s instant torque and all-wheel drive provide immediate launches
where the Polestar is more impressive below 65MPH or so
The Benz is not a light vehicle at around 3700lbs
but yet compared to the EV it feels very lightweight
They are really complete opposites even though they have fairly similar 0-60 times
the C63 is still faster in this metric as well as the ¼ mile
My new commute to work is so minimal that the engine of the gas cars wouldn’t even have an opportunity to warm up prior to getting to work now

I think a V70R with a manual transmission and an E63 wagon would make a killer combo for 2/3 of a garage
Of course Miata is almost always the answer for the final 3rd
That would indeed be a pretty freaking fantastic garage
Which generation Miata would you throw in there
I’m split between a pristine OG NA1 or a 30th anniversary ND with a limited slip
I’d also consider taking a bit of a step up and go with a NA2 NSX between 1997-2001 (the ones with the bigger motor and 6 speed but still have pop-up headlights)
my wife) had a 9-5 2.3t wagon from this generation
Honestly the only deficit with the car was that my passenger princess wife had to be extremely careful when reaching into the back seat to tend to our (car seat restrained) kiddo
lest she turn the key with her knee as we barreled down the highway at surprisingly high velocity
The subsequent restart and shift back into gear (while still moving) was quite a shock (to both us and the drivetrain)
A neighbor who had recently moved here (PNW) from Nebraska had a beautiful silver one
I was sad that I didn’t know that was happening and I might have bought it
I think it’s good that temptation was never presented
Haha I’m with you. I want one so bad! But they do not seem easy to keep on the road. When I was working with Karl on this I stumbled across this thread that permanently scared me away from them I think. Maybe… https://www.reddit.com/r/Volvo/comments/1eswknj/my_cost_of_ownership_2004_volvo_v70r/
I’m not proud that my Polestar was made in China but I weighed it with the fact that Volvo is exporting US-made vehicles to China.”
My wife has a Polestar 2 as well and has the same opinions
thanks for keeping the Swedes going (I’ve sort-of wanted a used XC70 for a while
I’ve had a soft spot for Volvos and Saabs for as long as I can remember
There’s a beautiful 9-5 NG in town that I drool over every time I see it (although I don’t think I’d ever want to own one)
Kudos to you for doing something different and keeping these great cars on the road
Man the things I would do for a nice 9-3 convertible… Saabs are such great cars
I still get sad when I remember I can’t have a new Saab
Does the lack of new Saabs make you want to Saab
..and yet you continue to do stories about members rides and keep overlooking our 2020 Connect.
that has a 10K upgraded performance suspension installed
carbon fiber diamond tucked interior and and soon to be installed sound dampening sheets then covered by alcantara faux leather fabric.
Hey man, I pull people from the list here: https://www.theautopian.com/how-to-sign-up-for-autopian-member-rides/ so if you want to be featured
go there and fill out the survey and I’ll get to you
but we’re having the van partly wrapped Monday.
We’ve been building this van for the last 4 years
brake performance slotted dimpled rotors and more.
I don’t have you on the spreadsheet that populates from that
but I will check the master again when I’m not at the day job
well I contacted mercedes about what I needed to get on this list.
I mean like questions you’d ask ect.
but I asked David if he and other wanted to participate in a cross country van tour with track timed events at each stop
david decline saying his van’s CVT wouldn’t survive the trek
and then embedded in there is the link to the survey
Let me know once you’ve filled that out and then it should populate onto my list and we can go from there
The questions vary with each garage because the questions I will have for a transit are not relevant to a Miata and vice versa
of that’s right you want me to pay for my membership in order to be featured.
I wonder if Karl’s ex-girlfriend already was an “ex”-girlfriend when the incident with the car catching fire occurred …
Impressive collection all around Karl (and as usual
but what really draws me is your striking Z900
I’ll never tire of dual analog gauge setups
Kawasaki green looks so much better in small doses like here (bikini fairings forever – why won’t they come back already??) rather than in large eye-seering swaths across full bodies
There’s an upcoming write up (once the weather improves enough to get bikes out of storage) that you’re sure to love
Three times now I’ve dragged my ZX7R out of the garage to give it a wash and take photos so I can sell it
But that green looks so amazing I just keep it instead
I love the analog gauges as well – so simple and easy to read
Fun read and a tip of the cap to Karl for his taste in Swedish wagons
The V/XC70 has been on my list for so long
she exposes them to hot air at nearly 200 degrees
The changing colors are due to the reaction between the wood and the dye during the heating process
Saki Takeshita tells designboom that in the course of her experiments
she’s found out that it’s possible to use the ‘eeyo’ method on other kinds of wood
and her several chairs during the event as can testify
‘Although balsa wood absorbs the most dye water and thus has the greatest range of color change,’ she shares with designboom
There are no artificial finishings or added paints in the final product
The designer only lets nature and naturality take over her chair designs
Visitors during the DESIGNART Tokyo 2024 can witness the dyed balsa wooden chairs on the second floor of the Tokyo Midtown Galleria
which stays there between October 11th and November 4th
Saki Takeshita varies the time she blows dry the dyed balsa wood with hot air, depending on the kind of color and saturation she looks for. Because of this, the designer can also shift the patterns and where the colors can appear around the wooden chairs
and she can choose where to point the hot air to unravel the reaction of the wood from the dye
She says that this method can allow graphic processing on the wood’s surfaces with natural grain and texture still being intact throughout
During the DESIGNART Tokyo 2024
there are twelve gradient-like balsa wooden chairs on the second floor of the Tokyo Midtown Galleria
It is here that the designer showcases her material research
the gradience of the colors looked more muted and subtle
and her objects leaned more towards vase-like objects
the dyes appear more saturated to further highlight the reaction of the wood and dye to the heat
She also adds that the color reaction may depend of the compatibility of the balsa wood with the dyes
Visitors have time to see the chairs in person until October 27th

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
Eden Prairie resident Saki Tsuchiya has led a full life
From her incarceration in an internment camp as a child to her 60-year marriage that produced a loving family
Saki has experienced her share of pain and joy
The 91-year-old exudes positivity and a desire to share her story and the lessons she has learned along the way
Saki was the third youngest of the 10 children
She remembers attending Bailey Gatzert School
and playing badminton and hopscotch with her younger siblings and friends in their neighborhood
“It was difficult for my mom to try to prepare meals for this big family with such a meager salary
She said one of her brothers would often fish for the family’s supper
and the older siblings helped care for the younger ones
Saki was 8 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec
She recalled that people yelled at her family and other people of Japanese heritage after the attack
one of her brothers was watching a movie at the cinema when the bombing occurred
“It was Japan that bombed Pearl Harbor,” said Saki
Saki recalled houses belonging to Japanese Americans “were searched
Families were afraid to have any possessions that appeared too Japanese
These things were given away or destroyed.”
About 10 weeks after the bombing, on Feb. 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066
The order authorized the forced removal of all individuals considered a threat to national security from the West Coast to concentration camps called “relocation centers” or “internment camps” further inland
which resulted in the incarceration of about 120,000 Japanese
there was a lot of confusion within her Japanese community about what would happen to them
When they finally had to leave their homes
all they could take was what they could carry
Saki and her family first lived in a temporary camp on the fairgrounds at Puyallup
They slept on cots in former horse stables
stuffing straw in canvas bags to make mattresses
Saki recalled there was no privacy in the living quarters or the bathrooms.
They were then transported to the Minidoka War Relocation Center in Idaho
“What a desolate area it was!” Saki remembered
tumbleweed and sand – truly a desert-like area.”
She described the terrible dust storms that would occur
“The wind blew the sand so hard that one could barely see
Saki’s 12-person family lived in two small rooms within a barracks that was constructed from wooden frames and covered in tar paper
The camp was surrounded by a barbed wire fence
and armed guards were posted on watch towers
“We were not allowed to leave camp,” Saki said
with most teachers being Caucasians willing to work at the camp
Saki recalled that for her and the younger children
living in the internment camp “did not impact us like it did my older siblings who had
Saki’s brother Joe volunteered to join the Military Intelligence Service (MIS)
which intercepted and interpreted Japanese communications
first to Camp Savage in Savage and then to Fort Snelling in St
After the exclusion orders were rescinded in December 1944
because there was nothing there for us,” said Saki
Three of Saki’s older siblings had joined Joe in the Twin Cities
her parents and her younger siblings remained at Minidoka
the older siblings in Minnesota worked and pooled their money to buy a house
When Saki and her remaining family finally moved in August 1945
they traveled by train from Idaho to the Great Northern Railway station in Minneapolis
you can imagine how we felt when that taxi cab came in front of this house
Saki began junior high school in Minneapolis
“My sister and I were the only Japanese at that junior high school,” said Saki
“There was a great deal of curiosity about us
“It was difficult to try to explain that our family had been in an internment camp in Idaho
It was quite obvious that people in this area were totally unaware of the mass evacuation that had taken place.”
Saki lived across the street from Trinity Lutheran Church
“It turned out that some of my junior high school friends were attending that church
“I got involved in a young people’s group called the Luther League.”
Saki was involved in the Christian Fellowship Club
she enrolled at the University of Minnesota to become a nurse
thanks to the financial support of her brother Fred
While taking a Japanese language class at the university
Saki met another student named Albert Tsuchiya
“because I didn’t want to do any dating while going to school.”
after graduating from college and becoming a registered nurse
“he supposedly sprained his ankle and came out of the game and struck up a conversation.” He again asked her on a date
they got married at Trinity Lutheran Church and began their life together
while Saki continued working as a nurse until she had her first child
they welcomed three children into the world and then added a fourth after moving to Bloomington
Some of her happiest memories were when she
and their children would go to their cabin on Blue Lake in Hubbard County
Saki recalled that Albert “worked very hard cleaning up the weeds on the lake so the kids could swim.” They would fish
In 2018, Saki and Albert moved to The Waters in Eden Prairie
to get her settled someplace she could continue on,” said Cheral Tsuchiya
What brings her joy now are visits and Zoom calls with her family
along with various activities with her friends at The Waters
Saki’s son Brian described his mother as “very giving
Saki Tsuchiya has given much of herself to her community and the people she loves
When asked what important lessons she has learned during her life
“Enjoy life and every day because you never know how many days you have left.”
Our next dining destination is Saki Japanese on Collier Boulevard in South Naples
Although we did go to the East Naples location on Tamiami Trail in December 2022
Things got off to an appetizing start with the “Gyoza Pork” ($8.99)
Gyoza is the Japanese equivalent to Chinese potstickers
The thinner skins mean that gyoza get crispier than potstickers
I had the sushi and sashimi for one ($26.99)
nine pieces of sashimi and a California roll
While the menu clearly states that the sashimi is chef’s choice
One that looked like tuna but was very veiny and didn’t taste like tuna and a second
which I did not recognize — and was told it was indeed tuna
and while 85 percent of this boat was really good
the veiny piece was rejected by my mouth — to put it as politely as possible — and the unrecognizable piece was not touched
This is the first time I can remember leaving any sushi at the table
But the rest of the dish was perfectly fine
My dining companion picked the “Chicken Yaki” ($16.99)
The word “yaki” basically means cooked over direct heat and shows up in the names of many well-known Japanese dishes
Saki Japanese opened a second location on Tamiami Trail in East Naples
During that visit we started with two rolls from the sushi bar — the “Sweet Potato” sushi roll
shrimp and is topped with crunchy tempura pieces
I selected the salmon from the hibachi menu
brown or fried) and a bounty of hibachi veggies
I recommend this dish or at the very least ordering something from the vast hibachi menu
This meal comes with a tasty Japanese house salad
It was 2018 that we had that last official visit
The restaurant features nearly 30 specialty rolls like Mango Tango with mango and salmon
my partner in dine and I had picked the King Cobra roll – shrimp
cream cheese and cucumber topped with spicy crab
All the ingredients were fresh; the roll was gigantic – plenty enough for two
The shrimp was beautiful to the eye as well as the tummy
That’s more generous than your average restaurant or someone’s getting fired after the owner reads this
no one knew I was there to review the restaurant
nobody likes it too dry or too oily; and as that goes
There was nothing – beyond the amount and taste of the shrimp – extraordinary about the fried rice
but there wasn’t anything to complain about either
My dining companion ordered the chicken and vegetable tempura which comes with either brown
The tempura comes with both a soy and a creamy-based dipping sauce and the entire dish was met with enthusiasm
The service during each of these visits was prompt and efficient

Saki Yew speaks with GAY TIMES about her unforeseen exit from Drag Race UK
her planned impersonation for Snatch Game and whether she’s received an open invite for season seven
With her “Frankenstein” drag – aka the infusion of her Australian
Filipino and Mancunian backgrounds – Saki Yew was one of the most anticipated contestants on this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK
the theatre queen’s journey came to an abrupt end in episode two when a homophobic shower forced her to withdraw from the competition
A queen with a sense-of-humour, however, Saki is monetising her misfortune with her own line of bath mats. “Oh
I’m going to have to bring this out,'” Saki tells GAY TIMES
‘How am I going to make money out of this?’”
Although her Pork Chop status prevented her from showcasing more of her drag
Saki undeniably made her mark on Drag Race UK with her comedic burlesque routine and “worker bee” runway
as well as her much-needed conversation with Zahirah Zapanta about microaggressions and discrimination faced by queens of Asian descent
“That conversation has just spread like wildfire,” says Saki
‘That means so much and I can relate.’”
Read ahead for our full exit interview with Saki Yew
where she reminisces on her shock exit from Drag Race UK
whether she’s received an open invite for season seven and which celebrity she planned to impersonate on Snatch Game
You just have to deal with it and keep moving forward
[I’m] still putting things to place so that it doesn’t happen again
and making sure [my knee is] strong enough to deal with work to keep going
it happened in the hotel room and then I kind of kept it to myself
which was probably the wrong decision because I wanted to do the episode
that’s when I actually spoke to someone on the Queen Team
I think I need to talk to a medic.’ And that’s when everything happened
the doctor said I would be able to just walk properly without pain in two weeks
but then I took extra weeks to make sure that it was fully healed
I am going to keep my lips nice and tight with that… Yeah
I mean you have to laugh about it because it’s something so little
you slipped in the shower and that’s what took you out
You can find them on You Better Merch on their website under the Saki Yew merch
I’m going to have to bring this out.’ I went
‘How am I going to make money out of this?’
It’s like one of those airline safety videos
I could do that on how to enter a shower and safely exit
You would see it through the fashion that I would bring
You saw in episode one with me and Zahirah
that conversation has just spread like wildfire
‘That means so much and I can relate.’ It’s nice to see someone actually talking about it on such a public platform for the next set of younger Asian queens
it’s about time that it’s happened and that we all get recognised for what we do in our art-form
We can do everything in that little Rolodex of drag
It’s just so nice that curses are being broken
I haven’t been out in Manchester yet to see the effect
I see that we both get recognised for who we are
not just get called the complete opposite drag queen
I hope that when Zahirah is in the village
she doesn’t get called Saki anymore and she actually gets called Zahirah
Sometimes you have to get on with the job and laugh it off
You literally just took the words out of my mouth
I was absolutely gunning for those wins for the Rusical and girl group because that’s all I really trained in
I couldn’t stand on it and I sat on a stool
‘I have to hand stitch everything’ and kind of had to alter things
I couldn’t compare to the House of Zen because their outfits were incredible
it wouldn’t have been as bad as Kiki Snatch and Actavia’s
but the option that I was going to go with was Imelda Marcos
I was going to do her as her older self and just really haggard
It was just a different take to what Manila did
I’m just going to take it as it comes
I’m going to try and be as busy as I can
I’m going to try and see as many people and fans as I can

the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Crime Laboratory Division has now identified the man investigators believe is responsible for the decades-old cold case murder of 86-year-old Mary Moore Searight in Paris
Mary Moore Searight was found inside her home by her unofficial caretaker
Searight was air-lifted to a hospital in Dallas where she succumbed to her injuries three days later
Searight owned and rented out several properties in the Paris community
including homes along the same street on which she lived
was among the neighbors interviewed by the Paris Police Department on the evening of the crime
Cady attempted to conceal an unexplained laceration on his right hand and had inconsistent explanations about the injury
Investigators obtained DNA swabs of Cady’s hand
Searight’s case was identified by the Texas Rangers as being eligible for the Texas Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) program which is funded by the Department of Justice/Bureau of Justice Assistance (DOJ/BJA)
DOJ/BJA provides investigative funding for agencies across the United States to further unsolved sexual assaults and sexually related homicides with the hope of bringing justice to victims and their families.
while reviewing Searight’s case information
investigators determined the swabs taken from Cady’s injured hand were also eligible to be submitted for further analysis under the SAKI Program at DPS’ crime laboratory in Garland
That testing led to the discovery of Searight’s DNA on the swabs taken from Cady’s hand
the Texas Rangers and the Paris Police Department arrested Cady—who was already in the Hopkins County Jail for another crime

playHow Japan stunned Brazil with two injury-time goals at the Olympics (2:20)Sophie Lawson analyses Japan's late comeback victory against Brazil at the Olympics
For a team who were once champions of the world and Olympic silver medallists in 2012, expectations surrounding Japan were always going to be high in the women's football tournament at the Paris Games
the luck of the draw -- as well as how competitive the women's game has become -- meant that Nadeshiko were never going to have it easy despite their proud history
Having lost to reigning world champions Spain in their campaign opener three days earlier, the Japanese looked headed for a second defeat on Sunday -- trailing Brazil 1-0 as the tie ticked over into injury-time
Although two of the three third-placed teams in the women's tournament can still qualify for the quarterfinals, Japan were in real danger of missing out especially given their group-stage finale on Wednesday loomed as another testing encounter against Nigeria
Somehow, not only did Japan come back from the dead, they mustered a full revival with two quickfire last-gasp goals to pull off a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Brazilians
Having spurned a golden opportunity to take the lead just before halftime when Mina Tanaka saw her penalty saved by Lorena, the Japanese then fell behind through Jhennifer's 56th-minute opener
But as Nadeshiko were awarded a second spot-kick with a minute remaining, this time it was Saki Kumagai who stepped up and made no mistake in finding the back of the net to level the scores
It was a classic captain's goal and should not have come as a surprise even if Kumagai -- a centre-back by trade -- had only scored twice previously at international level
Japan's most-experienced player with over 150 caps to her name and a veteran of the highest order
having won nine major European league titles and five UEFA Women's Champions League crowns during her time with Lyon
Having only scored twice previously in over 150 caps for Japan
Saki Kumagai showed real mettle under immense pressure with her injury-time equaliser against Brazil -- especially after Japan had missed an earlier penalty in the first half. Alex Gottschalk/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesIf ever there was anyone with the mettle and composure to handle the pressure
Having equalised at such a late stage of the contest
the Japanese might have been forgiven had they been content to hold on to the solitary point
and channel all their energies for one final battle against Nigeria
They are after all a fearless outfit. They showed that when they beat the mighty United States in the final to become world champions in 2011
Just last year, in the most recent edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup
they pulled off one remarkable victory after another -- including a stunning 4-0 rout of eventual champions Spain -- before ultimately falling short in the quarters
And with Brazil reeling from what they thought were two points dropped, it soon became all three -- as a misplaced pass from Rafaelle Souza was capitalised on by substitute Momoko Tanikawa with a long-range strike that sealed the unlikeliest of fightbacks
depending on how the second Group C tie of the days pans out
Nadeshiko will at least be just three points off the pace in second place or be one of four teams all tied with a victory each
the most important thing for them is that they remain in control of their own destiny
and their haul of six points should almost certainly be enough for progress to the last eight
even if it comes as one of the third-placed qualifiers
Japan are firmly back on the right path to go further at the Olympics
It might not have been the case if not for a stunning comeback -- inspired by a leader who did not fail to rise to the occasion when she was needed the most

This is my exploration of the Disaster Report series where I will chronicle my playthrough like a text-based Let’s Play
Now let’s continue Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3: Kowareyuku Machi to Kanojo no Uta..
Rina Makimura and Saki Honjou had narrowly escaped a fire tornado and paused to catch their breath in an alleyway…
Saki commented on how it was curiously dark for that time of day
given the fact it was about 04:00 pm when the fire whirl struck
and sunset in March in Tokyo was historically over an hour away
so Saki decided that we should take refuge somewhere for the night
I received Disaster Manual 12: Evacuation of Buildings
which explained to keep clear of any building whose pillars had X-shaped or deep diagonal cracks
Disaster Manual 13: Traveling at Night went on to suggest only being outside in groups
We sheltered in the Hongou Office Building and listened to the radio
The news reiterated that Central Island had suffered the brunt of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake at 07:10 am
Parts of the West District were submerged or experiencing soil liquefaction
so survivors should evacuate to Nishi Daisan Junior High School
Saki said that the earthquake was bigger than she thought
so I told her to cheer up as we were both uninjured
Saki was still shaken up by the purple-suited man who shot Morita
so I wondered who he was and she wondered why the head of the Morita Group conglomerate would have left her trapped beneath a car in a collapsed tunnel
she decided to change the subject to why I had come to the island
so I told her that I was supposed to start university soon
I then asked where she was going when the tunnel collapsed
as she was on the side heading away from Central Island
but quit and was on her way to do something that she really wanted to do
I assumed it had to do with her singing earlier
but I decided against asking her more as she seemed reluctant to go into details
so she confirmed that she was single after a messy break-up some time ago
which she seemed to enjoy before telling me that I was out of tune
and Saki said that she was glad we were together
I received Disaster Manual 14: Use of Radios
and Disaster Manual 16: Evacuation to Shelters
Manual 14 just said to carry around a portable radio to receive important broadcasts
and Manual 15 suggested watching the TV and listening to the radio
Manual 16 went into detail about registering with a shelter if you are not taking residence inside of it
so that you can receive your ration of relief supplies
We woke up and were on Sakuramachi Street by 09:15 am
Saki was positive that we could reach the shelter fairly promptly
though I cautioned her against feeling complacent
This caused me to develop a [Calm] personality
it did give me Disaster Manual 80: Effects on the Personality
which said a disaster can affect someone’s mental wellbeing
I also received Disaster Manual 17: Day-After-Quake Actions
which warned to stay away from broken buildings and loose objects and to help those trapped or injured while ensuring you tend to any injuries that you may have sustained
The road had cracked in half lengthways along it
so we cautiously walked along the narrow path but broke into a run when a tremor caused a building to slide down towards us
I was knocked to the ground when it stopped
then led the way to a vehicle which we could push backwards to use as a step up to the next section of road
There were some Black Long Boots next to the car
I found some Work Gloves and equipped them
which just contained a puff piece about Café de Centria’s “Reverse Strawberry Tart”
There was what I took to be a broken billboard sticking up out of the road
so I pushed it over and carefully crossed it (though the camera quickly spinning halfway across for no reason did cause me to fall off it once)
I grabbed a Pink Suit and a Jump Compass from up the road
then went back down where I found a Monotone outfit
I picked up a Chef Hat before climbing up the broken road sections
so we went into the hotel and I received Disaster Manual 18: Call for Help
It suggested saving your energy by tapping on something instead of calling out
and keeping mobiles on standby in case rescue teams were looking for weak signals
I also got Disaster Manual 19: Rescue Activities which dealt with simple first aid
It was 10:02 am when we entered the Hotel High Urban
which had almost completely collapsed inside
I picked up and equipped a Tight Skirt outfit
then found a Hotel Flyer which talked about how well-positioned the hotel was
I also found a Flashlight (Empty) and a Jack before I called out and found the person from the window
I received Disaster Manual 20: Rescuing from High Places
which basically said that she shouldn’t attempt to jump down from two floors above me (the rubble from the floors above meant that I was almost up to the first-storey windows)
I found a space to crawl through which gave me access to the stairwell; unfortunately
that wasn’t directly connected to the trapped person’s bit of floor
I went up several flights and had a rest on a bench
then edged along against a wall to the bit of floor directly above them
though I left an Orange on the floor as I was running low on backpack space
I went down one level and grabbed a Folk Song Compass before edging along the wall to another chunk of floor
which allowed me to climb up some furniture to another bit section
before dropping down and reaching my objective: a ladder
I may have technically fallen and hurt myself on the last bit
I did replace my Gauze Mask with the Smoke Mask
and my Tall Brown Boots with the Leather Sneakers
I decided to push the ladder onto the floor below me
I grabbed a Western Helm from just outside
and dropped down safely to the ground floor
then I offered to climb up to unstick the trapped person
she soon called for me to go up anyway… I had to use the Jack to free the schoolgirl’s legs
I was also given Disaster Manual 21: Use of Ladders
Saki asked her to join us on our trip to the shelter
and I received Disaster Manual 22: The Need for Disinfection
which suggested using whiskey rather than sake or shochu in an emergency
Guaranteed to know more about Transformers and Deadpool than any other staff member
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is officially back Back BACK – and we couldn’t be more thrilled about it
The BBC Three show returned for its sixth season at the end of last month
with 12 queens from across the UK competing to be crowned the UK’s next Drag Race superstar
the show also provides plenty of first-class drama and one queen who has been ruffling feathers is Chanel O’Conor
who is originally from the Isle of Bute in Scotland
Chanel clashed with fellow queen Charra Tea and viewers took to social media to share their thoughts
‘Chanel may be the low-key villain and drama of the season.’
Speaking about the disagreement between Chanel and Charra
Saki Yew – who had to leave the competition due to an injury – said
everyone could feel the tension that was happening between those two
this is what I think and this is what you think.”’
When asked if Chanel is really a ‘villain’
Saki was forced to withdraw from the competition after slipping in the shower and injuring her knee
and viewers saw her say goodbye to the other queens in emotional scenes
You work so hard in preparing for the competition
because it’s going to be a lot,” Saki explained
‘For it to be taken away just because you slip in the shower
it’s kind of crappy but you just have to accept it and move on
But it was nice to be able to say goodbye to the girls in the Werk Room.”

the reasons must be explained,” he said after a dialogue with the National Consensus Commission
Referring to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus’ announcement that the election will be held between December this year and June next year
“Other advisers also said they will not go beyond this timeline
We think the timeframe should be more specific and finalised through discussion.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season six star Saki Yew
who was forced to quit the show through injury
has teased a potential return to the franchise.
Mid-way through episode two, which aired on Thursday (3 October), Australian drag queen Yew hurt her knee slipping in the shower
She hobbled into the werk room on crutches to share the news
“I’m going to say goodbye to you. I’m gutted because it’s not the way I wanted to leave, but I have to be smart about this and look after my body,” she said
Yew told PinkNews that the injury had healed and she felt in a “good place” after making the “devastating” decision to leave.
She encouraged fans of the show to keep an eye on her social media to see the whole wardrobe she had planned for Drag Race
and jokingly advised everyone to: “Hold on to everything in that shower
And asked about a possible return in a later season of Drag Race UK or one of the franchise’s many spin-offs
she said: “That’s something you’re going to have to wait [to] see
and suggested that Cardiff-based Justin Drag
She also revealed that she had a controversial figure planned for her Snatch Game: Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, who, in 2018, was convicted on fraud charges involving the funnelling of $200 million (approximately £150 million at the time) to Swiss foundations.
Saki said that despite her idea being “controversial”
she had planned to portray Marcos as “poor and haggard”.

"Our hope and goal is that this pursuit leads to aid the healing process for those falsely accused," he said
acquittals; these are important elements of a broader process of securing justice and helping those falsely accused to recover
This case exemplifies the long-term trauma that can stay with someone accused of sexual assault."

special assistant to the state attorney general
who is assigned to the Kalamazoo County Sexual Assault Kit Initiative
said the verdict is only the second acquittal out of 24 cases prosecuted so far as part of the grant-funded effort that sought justice in 225 cold-case sexual assaults
The reported victim in Watson's case was an 18-year-old freshman at WMU in November 2013 when she said Watson entered her dorm room and assaulted her
She reported the incident to WMU Police within 24 hours and rape kit evidence was collected
but she chose not to pursue prosecution at that time.In 2022
the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative team approached the victim about pursuing justice
"We wouldn’t have brought the charges if we didn’t think this happened," House said
"Some of the jurors spoke after and said they were disturbed by what they had heard had happened
but didn’t feel they could convict him beyond a reasonable doubt."
House added that although sexual assault cases present a particularly difficult challenge since there are rarely independent witnesses
the SAKI team will continue to pursue the remaining 25 cold cases not closed
"It is important for victims to have their voices heard and have their cases tried
even when we can't guarantee the outcome," she said

For a team who were once champions of the world and Olympic silver medallists in 2012, expectations surrounding Japan were always going to be high in the women's football tournament at the Paris Games
Having lost to reigning world champions Spain in their campaign opener three days earlier, the Japanese looked headed for a second defeat on Sunday -- trailing Brazil 1-0 as the tie ticked over into injury-time
Just last year, in the most recent edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup
And with Brazil reeling from what they thought were two points dropped, it soon became all three -- as a misplaced pass from Rafaelle Souza was capitalised on by substitute Momoko Tanikawa with a long-range strike that sealed the unlikeliest of fightbacks.
Nonetheless, depending on how the second Group C tie of the days pans out, Nadeshiko will at least be just three points off the pace in second place or be one of four teams all tied with a victory each.
Either way, the most important thing for them is that they remain in control of their own destiny. Beat Nigeria, and their haul of six points should almost certainly be enough for progress to the last eight, even if it comes as one of the third-placed qualifiers.
Japan are firmly back on the right path to go further at the Olympics.
It might not have been the case if not for a stunning comeback -- inspired by a leader who did not fail to rise to the occasion when she was needed the most.
The Oyo State Rapid Response Team (RRT) has confirmed four deaths, linked to a suspected Lassa fever outbreak in Saki West local government area of the State.
The fatalities consisted of three males and one 32-year-old female who was preparing for her marriage.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi had earlier tasked the Oyo State Rapid Response Team to Saki, following numerous calls from Saki West Local Government reporting an outbreak that has led to a number of deaths.
The team, consisting of the Director of Public Health, the State Epidemiologist, State Disease Notification Officer (DSNO), State Laboratory Focal Persons, representatives from WHO and Red Cross, as well as the PHC Cordinator of Saki West and the LGA DSNO, embarked on a comprehensive investigation to the scene of the incidence.
Background information gathered that one of the apprentices at the hospital, who had returned from Iwajowa and fell ill about two weeks before the incident, was suspected to have introduced the infection.
She likely transmitted it to her co-workers and the hospital owner.
Three of the deceased exhibited typical symptoms of Lassa fever, including craniofacial bleeding, while the hospital owner showed fatigue and self-medicated with antimalarials and antibiotics. His condition only prompted hospital admission when his self-treatment failed.
Extensive contact tracing was conducted, with particular focus on high-risk contacts who had been involved in the bathing and burial of the deceased.
The hospital where all the deceased were associated was closed down for decontamination.
The hospital that admitted the deceased health facility owner, without being informed of the deaths from an ‘unknown’ illness, was also shut down for decontamination, and the doctor was placed under surveillance.
Public awareness campaigns were held to educate the community about Lassa fever, its transmission, symptoms, and preventive measures.
The RRT provided on-the-job training to health workers in the affected areas to reinforce Infection Prevention Control protocols and prevent further spread of the disease.
Sample collection was also carried out on a person exhibiting symptoms, pending laboratory confirmation. The linelisting of contacts is still in progress, focusing on individuals at high risk.
Advocacy visits were also conducted to the palace of the Okere of Saki, who was represented by his second-in-command, and was briefed on the outbreak and the necessary containment measures.
Local government authorities within Saki West were equally informed and aligned with the efforts to manage the situation.
Investigation also revealed that the outbreak initially involved Saki West LGA but has now extended to Iwajowa and Kajola LGAs while the DSNOs in the respective LGAs have been instructed to begin preliminary containment efforts while awaiting the full deployment of the State RRT.

The House directed the LG vice-chairman, Rasaq Adeyemi, to take up the mantle of the council leadership in an acting capacity.
The Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday suspended the chairman of Saki East Local Government, Emmanuel Adedokun, over various allegations.
The allegations, ranging from party misconduct, lack of religious tolerance, and inappropriate funds allocation, arose from a petition by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders in the local government area (LGA).
The House announced the suspension during its plenary after deliberations on the petition submitted to it.
The petition demanded accountability on movable equipment like bulldozers and the 10 per cent supposedly being deducted from the salaries of political functionaries.
“We appreciate the gesture of Governor Seyi Makinde in his vision of bringing people from another party to boost membership of our party across the state.
“But, in our own case, the beneficiary of this gesture has come to maim and destroy the party to boost his own faction from the other divide he came from.
“The moveable equipment like the bulldozer in the local government has been taken away since he assumed office and has not been returned and without remitting any money to the coffers of the council.
“It is on the aforementioned that we are calling on your support to save our party from the hands of Mr Adedokun and the lives of our leaders and elders, who have suffered enough for the sustenance of the party PDP,” the petition read.
The House directed the LG vice-chairman, Rasaq Adeyemi, to take up the mantle of the council leadership in an acting capacity.
It also said the secretary to the local government (SLG) should assume the position of vice-chairman in an acting capacity.
The House further directed its Standing Committee on Local Governments, Chieftaincy Matters and State Honours to investigate the allegations and report to the House appropriately.
