It has been five months since Russia began its all-out invasion of Ukraine
The Russian forces make no pretense of aiming at military targets
raining down missiles on civilians far from the battle’s front lines
and cathedrals of culture have been senselessly destroyed
as Moscow piles war crime on war crime in its drive to erase a proud sovereign nation from the map
Civil society groups produced a manifesto of their own
affirming the vital importance of having their number intricately involved in efforts to rebuild Ukraine’s infrastructure and institutions
and contribute to sustainable reforms; not just as watchdogs
but as true partners throughout the process
We at the International Renaissance Foundation were pleased to participate from the start in the discussions that led to the manifesto
The manifesto reflects its signatories’ belief that the reconstruction of Ukraine is about far more than merely replacing bombed-out buildings and reopening roads
It is a commitment to holding the recovery to high standards—of diversity
and energy security—and to helping develop and socialize the tools to ensure these standards are met
The International Renaissance Foundation
the Ukrainian philanthropy that is my privilege to lead
was pleased to be involved from the earliest stages in the discussions that led to the civil society manifesto
And we were honored to join more than 100 signatories to this blueprint so vital to Ukraine’s future
some asked: Why even bother talking about rebuilding when the bombs are still falling
Some aspects of the recovery are urgently needed right away
so that essential goods can reliably and safely be brought into the country
But it is also important to begin developing plans for reconstruction as soon as possible
so that they can be implemented immediately after the war ends
and potential business investors what a post-conflict Ukraine will look like
to keep them engaged and involved even as other global crises beckon
I have great hope for what civil society can accomplish because I have seen what its members are capable of. One of our partners runs the Teple Misto project in Ivano-Frankivs
They exemplify the kind of change that drives those working today to rebuild Ukraine tomorrow
Teple Misto helped foster and build cross-cutting efforts by NGOs
and others to create a warm and welcoming community responsive to its citizens’ needs
Their ability to rally stakeholders from all different sectors helped make their work in Ivano-Frankivs a success
as it has become one of the most comfortable and attractive cities in Ukraine
is an innovation center that has helped revitalize an old industrial factory
They brought people together to help work on new approaches to economic development in the region
and to foster investment in contemporary art and education
These efforts suggest a template for the nationwide rebuilding efforts to come
Teple Misto helped provide a platform for those forced to flee the war to stay in touch
I look forward to checking in on their progress
The challenges before us have grown immeasurably since the Russian aggression began in earnest
and destroyed vital infrastructure that will take years to restore
seeking refuge in western Ukraine or crossing the border in hopes of finding peace in other lands
and forced by the Russians into re-education camps
The impact on Ukrainian society is hard to measure
And its civil society sector is united by a common desire—to rebuild Ukraine in a strong and sustainable fashion
and partners about how we’re working around the world to build vibrant and inclusive democracies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people
Every year the Open Society Foundations give thousands of grants to groups and individuals that work on issues we focus on—promoting justice

The Church’s relationship with the League began in 2020. Local Latter-day Saints started volunteering with the League through JustServe
a community service website sponsored by the Church
the Church has donated more than 120,000 pounds of food to ULSTL over the course of the pandemic
The Church has also provided financial assistance to the League’s job-training program
as well as their “Grills to Glory” program
The latter is a collaboration between the League and local churches to strengthen communities
“There is a tremendous alignment between the Church and the Urban League,” said Michael P

About 2,700 boxes of canned goods and nonperishable items were distributed to thousands of families in need
who waited for hours in a drive-thru line to receive the donations
Volunteers loaded the boxes in the trunks of their cars as they passed through the front of the line
donated their time to prepare the thousands of food boxes needed
McMillan said he’s grateful for this continued support
“The Church came to our aid on numerous occasions with volunteers wanting to give back and then sending truckloads of food on several occasions that … we didn’t have to buy because of the Church,” McMillan said during his December visit to Salt Lake
Volunteers from multiple local organizations and businesses helped distribute eggs, frozen turkeys, dairy products, rice, pasta, fresh fruits and vegetables, and other food staples. The St. Louis Area Foodbank also provided a large donation of food for the event
“It’s a great opportunity for us to give back and to really answer [Dr

they share a common goal with the Church of Jesus Christ
leaders of the Urban League visited the Church’s headquarters in Salt Lake City
the Humanitarian Center and the Bishops’ Central Storehouse
These visits helped ULSTL vice president of public safety and community response James Clark see how their mission aligns beautifully with that of the Church
“The common ground is being mission-driven
focusing on what Jesus would do,” Clark said in an interview last December
“God has blessed us with the resources to be able to serve and feed people in a number of ways [and] being able to connect with a partner that can send in the … things that we need to strengthen what we’re doing on the ground.”
The Urban League in turn gave Sister Yee and Sister Browning a tour of their headquarters on Tuesday
The Church leaders were impressed by ULSTL's shared mission to strengthen families and communities
“It's been really energizing being here this weekend,” Sister Browning said
"They [the ULSTL] are so focused on serving one by one
which we know is a great and important principle for our Savior
"They're looking at the holistic picture here," Sister Yee added
"...The greatest difference that we're going to make starts in the home and then we wrap our arms around the home as part of our ministry
as part of our service as ministering brothers and sisters," Sister Browning explained
"...Dignity is another thing that we've seen this weekend is how they serve each other with dignity
That's so important that we keep that for one another ..
because that way we can move forward with hope," expressed Sister Yee

Sam Spicer/Getty ImagesByJessica MigalaPublished on June 24, 2022Medically ReviewedbyJustin Laube, MDClose your eyes for a moment and imagine stepping into a very warm natural body of water
with birds singing around you and refreshing outside air
That’s just one of the many possible wellness benefits to soaking in a hot spring
The act of soaking in a natural hot spring is also called hot potting
balneotherapy in a therapeutic and complementary health context
These waters can be found in a variety of settings
from naturally occurring outdoors to being directed into pools at spas and wellness resorts
Because the waters originate from deep within the earth, they accumulate minerals on their way to the surface, explains Marcus Coplin, ND
a primary care naturopathic physician and the director of hydrothermal medicine for the Balneology Association of North America
The result? Water that is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sulfur and that may provide health benefits. Sometimes these waters arrive at the surface naturally heated; other times, these mineral-rich waters are cold, then heated artificially, according to the Balneology Association of North America
Every hot spring offers a unique makeup of minerals. However, “There are benefits to soaking in warm or hot water regardless of the content of the minerals,” says Krista Ingerick
a licensed massage therapist and the spa operations manager at The Springs Spa
a wellness center that provides integrative therapies for Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic in New York
most people enjoy soaking for the relaxation and pain-relieving effects
so arriving with the mindset that you’re ready to tune out to the outside world and the stress of daily life is the first step.”
Here are some other potential benefits of hot potting
83 percent said that bathing in a hot spring provided relief from their symptoms by the end of the bath
many participants with musculoskeletal conditions had hoped that soaking would provide a permanent cure
Others also noted that this was something they had to do regularly since pain-relieving effects were only temporary
“One thing I do want to caution is that I don’t want it to sound like if you have arthritis
Though it is effective [as a complementary therapy for some people]
part of the efficacy is the proper application of prescription medication and physician monitoring,” says Coplin
thanks to the theorized anti-inflammatory effects of the waters
Relaxation is one well-known potential benefit to hot potting
“The simple experience of soaking in a warm bath for relaxation can have profound effects by turning off our fight-or-flight stress response
allowing our bodies time to heal,” says Ingerick
She adds that relaxation is a nice antidote to fatigue and can help improve resilience in the face of stress
that further supports the relaxing effects of hot potting
Research suggests that the heat from a soak may increase your metabolic rate (this is
the speed at which your body burns calories)
A study published in 2017 in Temperature evaluated 14 men and found that those who sat in a water bath burned an additional 61 calories per hour compared with a resting condition not in the water
(Exercise burned 556 calories per hour compared with rest
making it more efficient than either sitting at rest or soaking.)
What’s important about these results is that a hot springs soak can’t do it all
“While hot springs soaking can be a nice component of a comprehensive weight loss program
it is unrealistic to think you will soak and come out 20 pounds lighter
This is something you would do regularly in addition to a mindful-based diet and exercise program,” Coplin says
and in conjunction with your primary healthcare provider under your doctor’s guidance
and those who participated in four or five sessions over eight weeks improved blood vessel dilation
and improved blood pressure in ways that could potentially benefit heart health
One important thing to keep in mind if you are looking to use hot potting as a complementary therapy for any health condition: Hot soaking is not a substitute for routine conventional care. Be sure to discuss your goals for treatment and how immersion therapy may fit within those goals with your healthcare provider, according to the Balneology Association of North America

PRESS RELEASE — Terra Quantum, a leading quantum technology company, published in Advanced Quantum Technologies journal the first-ever observation of room-temperature superconductivity, Global Room-Temperature Superconductivity in Graphite
Kamerlingh Onnes’ discovery opened a new epoch in human history
the discovery of what was called “high-temperature superconductivity” in 1986 (Georg Bednorz and Alex Müller
put the next puzzle that had been remaining unresolved till recent work by Terra Quantum’s Chief Technology Officer Professor Valerii Vinokur together with Cristina Diamantini (University of Perugia) and Carlo Trugenberger (SwissScientific Technologies)
with co-authors from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas
discovered superconductivity at room temperatures
The hope that was viewed as a fairy-tale story became a reality
“Our work is an experimental discovery that humankind has been waiting for about a hundred years since the first observation of superconductivity in mercury,” said Prof
“This discovery made by our scientific team with our academic and industry partners opens the door to spectacular advances in superconducting technology
Room-temperature superconductivity opens a gateway to transformative advancements across industries,” said Markus Pflitsch
“Imagine power grids almost free of energy loss
revolutionizing our approach to electricity transmission
offering unprecedented diagnostic precision
Transportation will leap forward with energy-efficient
Electronics will enter a new era of miniaturization and power efficiency.”
“The emerging field of quantum computing will benefit enormously since the qubits that now operate only at 10–20 mK can come to room temperature functioning
the things that were viewed as futuristic dreams have become a reality,” added Prof
Pyrolytic graphite is a manufactured form of graphite
The research team at Universidade Estadual de Campinas
used scotch tape to cleave this graphite into thin sheets
These sheets were covered by dense arrays of wrinkles in nearly parallel lines
The geometry of these wrinkles causes electrons to pair up into structures that allow superconducting currents to flow along the wrinkles
The mechanism leading to superconductivity along the one-dimensional defects has been explained by C
Strain fluctuations within these defects can be described by effective topological gauge fields
which mediate an attractive potential causing electrons within droplets in the defects to pair up and Bose condense
The very thin dimension of these droplets leads to a very robust ground state for these pairs
The condensate droplets form an effective Josephson junction array on the surface of graphite
which freezes in its topological Bose metal state
with residual conduction on the edges formed by the defects
quantum phase slips typically cause dissipation
because of dimensional soldering with the two-dimensional surface and the three-dimensional bulk
quantum phase slips are just the tips of bulk vortices moving on the surface
Because of the very small resistance of the bulk
the motion of these vortices is suppressed
together with quantum-phase-slips-induced dissipation on the defects

Winter is a difficult time for both Ukrainian refugees and vulnerable families in Moldova
People on low incomes face many challenges
including high bills and a lack of warm clothing
The problem is even worse for families with children
To help the most vulnerable in these groups
our team at People in Need Moldova launched the #IarnaDaruimCaldura (#InWinterWeShareWarmth) campaign on the eve of the winter holidays
The campaign saw more than 500 Ukrainian and Moldovan children start the New Year with new clothes and shoes
The #IarnaDaruimCaldura campaign covered eight localities in different regions of Moldova
had the opportunity to choose clothes and shoes in several shopping centres in Chisinau
It was delightful to see that the children could hardly contain their excitement near the changing rooms
already sure that their children would not freeze this winter
"I would like to thank People in Need for giving me the opportunity to dress my two children
knowing that they will be warm this winter," said Irina from Odesa
"We came to Moldova from a region (in Ukraine) where there is fighting
I'm here alone with two children and a retired mother
the European Union; it helps Ukrainian and Moldovan children between the ages of 6 and 17 who come from socially vulnerable families
Through this campaign—carried out in consortium with NRC and ACTED—we prepared the children for school during the coldest period of the year," said Luciana BOLLATI
Thanks to People in Need Moldova's vulnerable families programme
the children were able to complete their wardrobes with all the necessary winter clothes: a jacket
The financial support of up to 3900 lei (€200) per child covered all the costs directly
As most of the beneficiaries have very modest means
many have told us that our support has been a real 'lifeline' as temperatures drop well below freezing
their children would have no chance of getting new clothes this winter
"I am very grateful to People in Need for this support
This is our second year working in Moldova
Most of our wages are spent on utilities and rent
Thank you very much; we wish your organisation success
and peace for all of us," said Larisa from Ukraine
The European Union funds the programme as a multi-sectoral humanitarian response to Ukrainian refugees and vulnerable Moldovan households in Moldova through the ECHO PLACE project
“A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
That is how Ade "Teple" Irawan described his experience working for the Indonesian Asian Games Organizing Committee’s (INASGOC) communication department
After officially joining the department's creative team -- which included creative director Elwin Mok and copywriter Fabiola Renetta -- in July last year
Teple was the one who came up with the design of the now viral Asian Games posters.
"There are two poster concepts: the first one highlights the Asian Games as Asia's biggest event; a battlefield between Asian countries -- since many still think this is an ASEAN event
We want to focus on the competitive and exciting parts; how huge it really is," Teple told The Jakarta Post on Monday
Real athletes are said to have been involved in the project
A post shared by teple teple teple (@teplete) on Jul 9
Ayo mentemen. Dukung sama- sama! Kita ramaikan Asian Games 2018. #EnergyofAsia #AsianGames2018 #JagatTarungAsiaRaya #NontonAsianGames2018
the second concept sought to welcome all of Indonesia's Asian guests and introduce them to the highlights of the archipelago; how big and beautiful it was
we want to introduce the faces of Asia to our own people
we want to [introduce] Indonesia itself."
A post shared by teple teple teple (@teplete) on Jul 12
the committee formed a team to work on the project
which included fashion director Erlangga S
as well as photographers Nurulita Adriani Rahayu (for the "Sambut Energi Asia" poster) and Heret Frasthio (for the "Jagat Tarung Asia Raya" poster)
Regarding the destinations on the "Sambut Energi Asia" posters
Teple said among the considerations was visual judgment
"We made sure to choose destinations from different regions in Indonesia."
who directed the fashion part of the project
said the poster's concept was an exciting and interesting one
"Despite the limited preparation time
we immediately said yes [to the job offer]
especially since we would be representing Indonesia," he told the Post on Monday

A post shared by Erlangga S Negoro (@erlangga_sn) on Jul 18
Erlangga said doing research for the project was quite dizzying because "playing with culture is not an easy thing to do
although it relates to fashion".
"Doing research about Asian cultures was also very exciting; like learning anthropology," he added
"After we learned more deeply about these cultures
we then started curating the designers that could best represent the looks."
all the designers involved were very supportive
Deden Siswanto even sent [the items] directly from Bandung
whom Erlangga described as a designer who always works with Indonesian elements and whose layering look perfectly represents the culture of Central Asia
other fashion designers involved in the project were Mel Ahyar (“her Happa collections breathe Sulawesi culture and also represent Southeast Asia or those quite close to Thailand or Malaysia that use the sarung”)
Albert Yanuar (“always consistent with oriental style and hence his shirt with dragon embroidery could represent East Asia”)
Ghea Panggabean (“whose silhouette of tunic woven style relates to fashion from Pakistan
India and Sri Lanka”) and the Hayati brand (“whose latest collection was inspired by modern Qatar; suitable to represent Central and East Asia")
After seeing the result and positive responses from the public
both Teple and Erlangga said it was quite unexpected
"I didn't expect to receive such [positive] responses since [the project] was done in such a limited time
But I'm glad that they like it," said Erlangga
"I'm quite surprised [by the responses]," said Teple
"Hopefully [the posters] can help people embrace the Asian Games
[Since the event] is not only a sports event
but also a gathering of Asian countries and their different cultures."

some foods and drinks contain compounds that help control parts of the sleep cycle
meaning that they may help a person both fall and stay asleep
Sleep quality and duration can affect a wide array of conditions
However, getting enough sleep can be tricky. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a third of adults in the United States report not getting a healthy amount of sleep
and hormones work together to promote good sleep and regulate the sleep cycle
Although lots of foods contain low levels of these sleep-promoting compounds
only some have high concentrations that could potentially affect a person’s sleep cycle
Taking both traditional knowledge and scientific research into account
here are the best foods and drinks for sleep:
a hormone that helps regulate the sleeping and waking cycle
A 1-ounce (oz) serving of whole almonds also contains 77 milligrams (mg) of magnesium and 76 mg of calcium
two minerals that may help promote muscle relaxation and sleep
Almonds are also a healthful evening snack
as they are high in good fats and low in sugar and saturated fats
Warm milk is a common home remedy for sleeplessness
Milk contains four sleep-promoting compounds: tryptophan
the childhood association that many people have between a warm cup of milk and bedtime may be more effective than tryptophan or melatonin in promoting sleep
having a warm cup of milk before bed can be a relaxing nightly ritual
Some research has looked at the link between kiwi consumption and sleep. In one small study
people who ate two kiwifruits 1 hour before bedtime for 4 weeks experienced improved total sleep time and sleep efficiency and also took less time to fall asleep
this may be because the fruit contains many sleep-promoting compounds
The herb chamomile is a traditional remedy for insomnia
Researchers think that a flavonoid compound called apigenin is responsible for chamomile’s sleep-inducing properties
Apigenin seems to activate GABA A receptors
Although research has found only weak evidence that chamomile may improve sleep quality
having a warm cup of tea can be a soothing ritual to help a person mentally prepare for bed
Walnuts contain a few compounds that promote and regulate sleep, including melatonin, serotonin, and magnesium. Each 100-g serving of walnuts also contains other nutrients that can help sleep
but researchers have not yet proven a solid association between eating these nuts and improved sleep
Cherries are rich in four different sleep-regulating compounds: melatonin
Researchers speculate that antioxidants called polyphenols in tart cherries may also influence sleep regulation
In a 2018 review on the health benefits of cherries
the authors found a positive correlation between improved sleep and cherry consumption
The researchers also concluded that the anti-inflammatory properties of cherries might help reduce pain after strenuous exercise and improve cognitive function
Tart cherries also make a good snack before bed because they are rich in fiber
Fatty fish may help improve sleep because they are a good source of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids
two nutrients that help regulate serotonin
Serotonin is largely responsible for establishing a fixed sleeping and waking cycle
Fatty fish are typically also high in a few other sleep-promoting nutrients. For example, a 3-oz fillet of wild Atlantic salmon contains:
In a 2014 study
participants who ate 300 g of Atlantic salmon three times a week for 6 months fell asleep more quickly and functioned better during the day than those who ate chicken
The researchers concluded that these benefits were primarily due to an increase in vitamin D levels
as well as possible improvements in heart-rate regulation due to the omega-3 content
Barley grass powder is rich in several sleep-promoting compounds
According to a 2018 review
barley grass powder may promote sleep and help prevent a range of other conditions
Lettuce and lettuce seed oil may help treat insomnia and promote a good night’s sleep
Some people claim that lettuce has a mild sedative-hypnotic effect
Researchers believe that most of lettuce’s sedative effects are due to the plant’s n-butanol fraction
specifically in a compound called lactucin
In a 2013 study
mice that received n-butanol fraction preparations experienced an increase in sleep duration and a decrease in sleep latency
other traditional or alternative remedies that can improve sleep include:
It is best to speak with a doctor before taking any new supplements to ensure that they will not interact with other medications or supplements or affect any existing medical conditions
Some lifestyle and diet choices can also help improve sleep and a person’s sleep cycle
and other compounds that help control the body’s sleep cycle
Preliminary studies show that several types of nut
People have used other foods and drinks for decades to treat insomnia and improve sleep
Most potentially sleep-promoting foods are nutritious and unlikely to cause harm
so they should be safe for anyone without allergies to enjoy in moderation
To get the potential benefits of some sleep-promoting foods, try eating them a few hours before bed to reduce the risk of indigestion and acid reflux
conceived as a public space as much as one for academic research
is instantly the most beautiful building on Temple’s campus
One trade-off: Most of the traditionally open book stacks are now a robot-only domain
An entrance to the new Charles Library at Temple
When it came to planning the new Charles Library at Temple University
it turns out all those tomes take up a good deal of space
which is why many libraries are nothing more than fortresses of shelves
But Lucia wanted something else: a building that at its core is still an academic research library
but one that also retains enough open space for classrooms
The solution Lucia came upon is one that is both largely out of sight and also the organizing principle of the entire $175 million
Its name is the “automated storage retrieval system,” and it takes the form of a concrete vault in the back of the library
which looks like a nuclear doomsday fortress but is in fact where about 1 million (some 80 percent) of the library’s books are stored — all on 50-foot high
is about 10 times more efficient than other types of shelving
and with the Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta
the two set about designing a space that looks more like a concert hall than a library:
so named for the $10 million gift that came from philanthropist and Temple grad Steve Charles
But the automated retrieval system — one of the largest such systems in any North American library — is the perhaps the single most interesting innovation
It essentially works likes this: A student requests a book online
A robot jumps into action in the concrete vault and delivers an entire box to a waiting (human) librarian
The librarian then finds the relevant book
places it on a collection shelf for students
and then the robot shoots off once more to return the box to the shelf
Books retrieved by the robot are then delivered to human librarians
But the delivery system raises an existential question: What is a library for
Any professor can tell you stories about searching for one book at a library
only to stumble upon an even more useful one on the very same shelf
That method of serendipitous inquiry is dead with book bot
But to fit all the library’s books on site with compact shelving would have required anywhere between 60,000 to 80,000 additional square feet of space
“A space that much larger we couldn’t afford,” he says
while noting there still are 200,000 browsable books on the library’s top floor — mostly a collection of recent scholarly work
The fourth floor is one of the few areas in the Charles Library that actually looks like a typical library
Setting aside those heady questions … here’s the library’s top floor
home to one of its best assets: a rooftop patio and garden
which is meant to help curb stormwater runoff
is part of the library’s plan to apply for LEED Gold certification
In keeping with that eco-friendly philosophy
the building has hardly any charging outlets
students can check out portable laptops or portable batteries for their various devices
And here’s the best part: In keeping with Lucia’s vision of a library that’s not just meant for academics
Which means you can check out all of the architectural splendor above for yourself
