people across Ukraine woke to the news that their country was being invaded by the Russian military
Russian tanks rolled into the country and the military attacked from multiple directions
the sheer scale of the human rights violations and war crimes is exposed with every passing day
Entire neighbourhoods have been destroyed in places like Borodyanka
through disproportionate and indiscriminate attacks
our researchers collected evidence and testimony of unlawful killings
including apparent extrajudicial executions
Some victims had their hands tied behind their back
Convoys of civilians fleeing with their children were fired upon
Russia’s decision to use force against another state without any legal justification has unleashed a catastrophic human rights crisis on the people of Ukraine
It is also having devastating implications on the human rights of many far beyond Ukraine
affecting global food chains and driving high energy prices around the world
The Russian Federation must stop this act of aggression against Ukraine and end the pattern of war crimes
Those responsible for atrocities must be held to account in fair trials
We must use our power in numbers to call for this to stop
email address and location will not be disclosed to the recipient of the petition
If you are talented and passionate about human rights then Amnesty International wants to hear from you
Residents in the Kyiv suburbs and around the country are gathering evidence at great personal risk
a forested district north-west of Kyiv once known for its spas and health clubs and now under Russian occupation
lawyer Ihor Chudovsky spent the first weeks of the invasion documenting the toll of the war on his community – including a rocket strike on an orphanage and civilians shot dead in the street
The US president, Joe Biden, on Wednesday called Vladimir Putin a war criminal
War crimes are grave breaches of the international treaties
conventions and protocols governing armed conflict
such as the disproportionate use of force not justified by military necessity or the deliberate targeting of civilians
and war criminals are those who directly carry out the acts or are judged to have a command responsibility
whether in a national court or in an international court or tribunal
is far easier when people like Chudovsky record what it is happening
Russian forces started attacking Vorzel on day one of the invasion
in an attempt to control the nearby cargo airport and highways into Kyiv
Russian troops entered the town and for eight days no one was allowed to leave
The invasion of Vorzel and the north-west suburbs of KyivVorzel’s trapped residents had no heating
and no access to food and medicine supplies
Russian forces attacked people who tried to leave their houses and tanks rolled down the streets and fired at houses at random
“The [Russians] set up checkpoints around the town
people who went out would be shot at,” said Chudovsky
There was one old man who went out to smoke
a tank column came past and they shot their guns and
“I received around 20 messages from people asking me
how they should bury people in these circumstances.”
What happened in Vorzel fits a pattern of Russian tactics in the areas they occupy. Tactics which human rights lawyers say amount to war crimes under the Geneva conventions
as well as breaches of international humanitarian law
Russian forces now occupy most of the north-west and central Kyiv region
Chudvosky said he intended to submit detailed notes and recordings of what he witnessed as evidence for the international criminal court in The Hague, via Ukrainian state prosecutors, who are preparing submissions.
There is increasing evidence that Russia may be trying to ensure its crimes remain unrecorded by cutting off communications in civilian areas
Residents of villages just south of Chudovsky’s town said that Russian forces confiscated phones after they entered
Russian soldiers checked people’s phones to ensure tthey were not filming or photographing the soldiers’ actions
They took their phones away and said any calls would result in executions.” Chudovsky used his car as a generator to charge his phone and would climb up to his attic to find a mobile signal

the Guardian lost contact with Chudovsky for four days
he managed to leave through a humanitarian corridor established by the International Red Cross
Ukraine’s State Agency for Communication said on 15 March that they believe Russia has deliberately targeted telecommunications masts and is using jamming devices to prevent civilians in the affected areas from communicating.
In the southern city of Mariupol, which has been under siege for almost two weeks, they have also had no phone signal. Hundreds of thousands of people have been trapped without access to food, medicine, water or electricity and hospitals have been targeted with airstrikes. Not being able to communicate has meant that people do not even know about the humanitarian corridors that have been established to evacuate the population.
“People are sitting in their basements and simply don’t know what’s going on,” said Dmytro, who declined to give his last name and managed to leave Mariupol after he found out about the corridor through word of mouth.
So far, only a few thousand have managed to leave the city of 450,000 people.
Mazen Darwish, a Syrian human rights lawyer who helped to lead recent prosecutions against the Syrian regime in Germany, said that the most important step Ukrainians can take towards accountability is to document the crimes.
Read more“My advice is not to wait until the UN sends a mission or the ICC starts their investigation,” said Darwish
who has been working on justice for Syrians for the past 11 years
“Ukrainians should know that they are the most important player in the documentation and collecting of evidence.”
Nick Waters, the lead for Ukraine at the open-source investigative organisation Bellingcat
said it was actively collecting evidence of attacks on civilians coming out of Ukraine
he stressed the importance of filming the crime scene but warned Ukrainians not to put themselves in danger by trying to pick up pieces of weapons or publishing it from an identifiable location if they are still under occupation
Waters cited a guide published by the NGO Witness to using video to document human rights abuses.
“The big issue with these kinds of images and videos is you never really know who actually originally took them, which is obviously a bit of an issue if you’ve planned to use it in court.”
Read moreWhile Chudovsky recorded the airstrikes and attacks, he too became a victim of breaches of international humanitarian law in the form of siege tactics. Russia and the Syrian regime previously used these tactics against Syrian resistance and opposition forces.
Those who left before the Russians occupied the town left their keys so that other residents could eat their food. Chudvosky described how in the days before he left he let himself into their empty houses and took food out of the fridges.
Some residents have decided to stay in Vorzel because they felt they had nowhere to go, Chudovsky said. Like those who left before him, he and the 25 other residents who went on the same day handed over their keys.
The relevant statement was made by Advisor to Ukrainian Internal Affairs Minister Vadym Denysenko, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“The situation in Bucha, Hostomel and Vorzel is remaining critical. The thing is that they are fully controlled by Russians at the moment,” Denysenko told.
In addition, Russian invaders are preventing food deliveries to Kherson. Whenever entrepreneurs attempt to get to the city, the Russian military stop them, fire on them, throw them out of cars, intimidating people this way.
“Actually, this is the situation in many regions, where the Russian occupation troops came. We have similar stories in Kyiv Region, Sumy Region and Kherson Region,” Denysenko said.
In his words, at the moment the Russian side refuses to organize humanitarian corridors to let civilians leave the captured settlements.
“We are involving international organizations and presidents of other countries to resolve this humanitarian issue. But, as we can get, this is a personal instruction from Vladimir Putin, to now allow for any humanitarian corridors yet,” Denysenko noted.
A reminder that, on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, starting a war. The Russian military are shelling and destroying the key infrastructure facilities, launching missile strikes on residential districts in Ukrainian cities and villages.

2024 at 4:57 pm PSTWhen the Russian Armed Forces invaded Ukraine in 2022
they murdered more than 1,000 civilians in the city of Bucha
a slaughter that became known as the Bucha massacre
But even more might have been killed if not for Konstantin Gudauskas
Now, Gudauskas is the subject of Bucha, a feature film that chronicles his heroic actions—and will screen for one night only in Portland on Friday, March 1
A Lithuanian Jew and a citizen of Kazakhstan
Gudauskas has used his Kazakh passport to travel to Russian-occupied territories to assist escaping civilians
becoming known as the “Angel of Vorzel” (a reference to a suburb of Ukraine’s capital
Among those Gudauskas rescued were his wife
with whom he hid in a cellar for two weeks as the couple evaded Russian troops
In Bucha, Gudauskas is played by Polish actor Cezary Lukaszewicz (Loving Vincent). The film was directed by Stanislav Tiunov and written by Oleksandr Shchur, who will participate in a Q&A at the Portland screening, which will be held at the Billy Frank Jr. Conference Center (located inside the Ecotrust Building)
While Bucha has mostly screened on the festival circuit this year, it is a massive effort teaming a film studio, Film.UA Group
with a long list of co-producers: Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense
and the National Police (plus Kyiv’s City Council and Regional Military Administration)
Tickets for Bucha, which start at $30, are now on sale here

We deliver blood reserves to the hospital through the police
We are all anxious to get our children out
Locals are waiting in queues to donate blood
One of their soldiers asked me if I had a pill
He didn’t know what he was doing here
We disinfect tools for operations using the World War II field method
We collected the bodies of those who died in the hospital and those brought to the pathological anatomy department
We decide to wait until eleven o’clock on the next day and then act according to the circumstances
The fireman gets in and drives the other way
I’ll settle my family and go back to another hospital

"Bucha" is a dramatic film based on real events that took place in the towns of Bucha
and Hostomel (Kyiv region) during the Russian occupation in the early months of the war
The story follows a foreigner who decides to fight against evil in Ukraine
The leading roles in "Bucha" are played by renowned Polish actor Cezary Lukaszewicz and Ukrainian film star Vyacheslav Dovzhenko
The film focuses on the heroic efforts of Konstantin Gudauskas
a citizen of Kazakhstan who had sought refuge in Ukraine and was living in Bucha
his Kazakh passport allowed him to travel into the Russian-occupied territory and evacuate civilians
Konstantin not only saves lives but also witnesses the horrors of war and occupation
The film also includes a scene where the famous Ukrainian composer
explained the two main goals behind the project:
"The first goal is to oppose Russian propaganda worldwide
Cinema is one of the most powerful tools for conveying global messages
If anyone believes that people in Europe and the US know exactly what happened here and only believe us
Russians have already made and are showing propaganda films such as 'Azovstal: Liberation' and 'Witness' with their version of events in Mariupol and Bucha
There is a risk that the world will watch these Russian films and accept their narratives
We must deliver the truth! Our second goal is to honor the memory of those who perished
we met with all the heroes or relatives of the deceased
The first thing we asked was whether they were willing to share their story for the film and whether such a film was necessary
we want the world to know about this.'"
the film was presented at some of the most influential global film events
including a special event dedicated to the film at the European Film Market of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) in February
as well as separate screenings in New York and Boston
working materials were showcased at the 80th Anniversary Venice International Film Festival (La Biennale di Venezia) and the Toronto International Film Festival
the film's materials were presented at the Cannes Film Festival's Film Market in May and at the Tribeca Film Festival's Film Market in New York in June
A seminary damaged and ransacked by Russian troops – who stole a chalice given by Pope St John Paul II – plans to re-open its doors this September with help from a leading Catholic charity
Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) has announced that it will help rebuild Sacred Heart Seminary in Vorzel
which was looted by Russian troops after sustaining damage from two mortar bombardments
Seminary rector Father Ruslan Mykhalkiv told ACN that the buildings were left in a terrible state
He said: “They took everything they could – kitchen utensils
“The seminarians’ rooms were ransacked and they took liturgical items
including a chalice donated by Saint John Paul II when he visited Ukraine in 2001.”
ACN has promised to cover the costs of replacing the furniture and equipment that was stolen in addition to rebuilding
The Latin-Rite seminary was home to 25 young men training for the priesthood
but they were forced to abandon the site on 25th February
after Russian Federation fighters seized Kyiv International Airport and proceeded to enter Vorzel
They had already occupied neighbouring Bucha
where soldiers reportedly killed hundreds of civilians
Students and seminary staff fled with five children from the nearby orphanage and the two Sisters caring for them
Father Mykhalkiv was able to return last month after Russian forces were driven out from the area around Ukraine’s capital
if our seminarians manage to return in September.”
stressed that helping the Church to recover would be part of the charity’s ongoing work in the country
we have been giving our full support to the local Church of both rites
“First with emergency support in the war zones
and for refugees in the west of the country…
we have been helping the parishes and monasteries in Ukraine that opened their doors to refugees
giving them material and spiritual support
ACN has provided more than £2 million in essential help to enable the Church to minister to those affected by the war
This includes aid announced last week providing food and shelter for more than 200 displaced women and children being cared for by Ivano-Frankivsk Archdiocese

another settlement of the Kyiv region after the occupation by Russian-fascist troops
Of the 29 multi-storey buildings in this urban-type settlement
the bodies of the first killed were found - 26 people
The rescuers of Borodyanka asked the occupiers to allow them to clear the rubble back in March
People remained locked in basements and houses
law enforcement agencies say that there are much more victims in Borodianka than in Bucha
