I got obsessed with this idea of a show that would be deep dive explainers into new technologies and ways that they might help us improve the world
And at a certain point it just made perfect sense to launch it as a show on YouTube
I thought about a lot of different ways of making this happen
Was it trying to make that show within a media company
I really wanted to make this show and it just felt like having the creative control and having the opportunity to experiment was ultimately what was most important to me
I had already grown up as a video journalist on YouTube and I just love YouTube
I really wanted to make a show that would be the best parts of highly produced television and quality explainer journalism
which I had learned from working on Explained on Netflix
and by working at Vox and also would have the kind of journey and energy and personal stories of the YouTubers that I most admired
I had a vision for what a show would be that would tackle these technologies in a way that felt both like you’re going to much more deeply understand them and where they're taking us in the future
I see being a journalist as an action that you take every day
So I don't think that I'm a journalist because I worked at a media company
I think that I'm a journalist because I do journalism and what that means is you are either sourcing new information
or you are analyzing and deciphering that information
which is part of what is so great about an explainer
And doing all of that in video can be very challenging
but also gives you such a rich opportunity to offer something to both eyes and ears
I just absolutely love the opportunity to try and fit the most information in the most fun way
In terms of doing journalism specifically on YouTube
it's exciting that it has an opportunity to reach so many people
It's exciting that you have an opportunity to receive feedback and really talk with your audience
I've made shows for streamers where I didn't have that kind of feedback and I really missed it
it felt like I really jumped into the ocean and was creating things from the ground up – whether it's your own production process or figuring out how to build a team
I think figuring out how to run a business when you have been a salaried employee for for your whole career is obviously tricky for anyone whether they're starting a business on YouTube or in some other way
One of the things that I was really excited about when I launched the show was incorporating more of my personal interests into an episode
What if I find something interesting that nobody else finds interesting
I said here are the four constraints that I am going to put on myself and here's what you should expect in the show
It's always going to be a deep dive into an interesting technology or scientific achievement that I think will really matter in the world in the future
We're always going to give you a real explainer on how it works and how it might play out in that future
And we're going to do so in a way that is genuinely optimistic
And then also the last one is if it's not inherently visual to make something be a good video
I had seen a big controversy on Twitter because people were talking about artificial wombs and in the context of that conversation on Twitter
it felt very matrix-y and people reacted very negatively to the idea
But from my perspective even looking at that controversy
but I would love technology that makes this process easier for half the population
What is going on with that category of tech now
So I started researching this video and I decided to do it as a sort of exploration
What I discovered was there are many different kinds of technology along the process of gestation
There's technology that helps support IVF really early on and there’s technology that helps save premature babies
So we're helping along each part of the spectrum here
It just so happened that during this process of learning about artificial wombs
I began to have a pretty severe pain in my abdomen and I went to the doctor and they told me that I had two cysts on my left ovary that was causing what's called ovarian torsion
I needed to have a minor surgery to correct that and it was kind of scary
I was going through this procedure to in some part help protect my future fertility while I was simultaneously doing journalism about how technology can help fertility and I was getting a laparoscopic surgery which is a technology assisted surgery that has progressed rapidly in the last few decades
As I was going through that whole process I was like
I wouldn’t necessarily have been free to tell a mixed kind of story
So what I ended up doing was I talked about the science of artificial wombs and I also talked about my experience of needing technology to help protect my fertility
There are lots of episodes where I am maybe tonally a little bit more YouTube but I am acting in the way that that a correspondent might very well act
The other point that I think is really important is yes
there are lots of different things that YouTubers and independent journalists can do that traditional media companies won’t but the quality of journalism being done on YouTube could easily be on TV
I think there is something deeply special about going somewhere and showing something to an audience that they might not have an opportunity to visit
The little kid inside of me is so delighted and I hope that it delights the other little kid inside other adults and that's part of what makes field shoots so special
NASA's new spacesuits are coming out and I got to put it on
it's an explainer about how space suits work
I consider myself a proxy for the audience when I'm in these rooms
On YouTube and as an independent journalist
vlog style and highly produced animations and explanations together and I really enjoy that
I also think that one of the most wonderful things about the growth of independent journalism both on YouTube and in general is the opportunity to tell all kinds of different stories
People go down all kinds of rabbit holes that I didn't even know were there
That flourishing of independent journalism is an opportunity as an audience member to learn all kinds of new things and as a journalist to make sure that all kinds of different stories get told
The kinds of stories we tell at Huge If True are exciting

FLORIDA - MARCH 06: Cleo Abram driving the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team Nissan e-4ORCE 05 on ..
More track during the second day of the Formula E Evo Sessions at Miami International Autodrome on March 06
How Cleo Abram prepared for Evo Sessions The inside story of the technology journalist’s training to become the latest in a long line of McLaren racers
It’s not every day that someone from outside the team gets to drive a McLaren race car
but that’s exactly what happened last week at Formula E’s Evo Sessions event in Miami
Technology journalist and content creator Cleo Abram - best-known for her online series ‘Huge if True’ - became a fully-embedded member of the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team for the unique event
which saw her and 10 other media personalities get behind the wheel of Formula E’s GEN3 Evo cars to learn exactly what it takes to become a real racing driver
This wasn’t a simple case of putting a star in a car and letting them take a lap or two under supervision, this was the real deal – or as close to it as one can get – and NEOM McLaren driver Sam Bird was on-hand to guide her through the whole process
“Sam has been incredibly helpful and generous,” says Cleo
“He’s been teaching me what it's like to be a Formula E driver
and what I hope I can do is show people just how hard that job is
He's been very patient in teaching me things that I'm sure are very obvious to him
And he's been incredibly empathetic to a person who has only ever driven a road car.”
Cleo’s commitment to the cause extended beyond her time at the track and her organised preparation at the McLaren Technology Centre and NEOM McLaren Electric Racing’s Bicester HQ
She spent time studying whenever she was on the move
and dedicated hours to improving her fitness
I had a booklet to learn everything about the steering wheel from
Driving a real Formula E car was such a huge honor and a feeling I'll never forget! I've never experienced anything like it. And maybe the best part was getting to know the @McLarenFE team 🧡 https://t.co/8OioafaZsR
I studied my race map and my videos from the sim – I have a video of Sam in the sim that was helping me learn my racing line
One of the things that was the most interesting for me
when learning what it's like to be a Formula E driver
Watching videos of Sam and looking at the data that came out of my day in the sim
I had the chance to practice in my mind over and over and over again
Sam was telling me about the exercises that he does
Being fully integrated into the team meant that Cleo didn’t just learn how to drive the car
While the drivers might get the most attention
there’s a whole army of people behind every car on track
and they’re constantly working with the driver to optimise their performance
“I've learned just how much goes into it all,” she says
“I've been amazed by how much strategy and planning needs to go into where your racing line should be
and how much physical strength is required to turn the car and brake at those speeds
"Everyone in the NEOM McLaren team supports each other so much with their different skills and knowledge
I saw that from coming out of the car and sitting with the team
Cleo got behind the wheel of the GEN3 Evo car with plenty of preparation
but no amount of groundwork could prepare her for the feelings and emotions of the real thing
with there being even more to think about once she was strapped in
you're feeling all of the possible feelings in the world
and ‘how do I make sure that I am showing what I've learned
making sure I don't hurt the car or hurt myself?’
you don't want to come to believe that you're anywhere close to a real race car driver and push yourself too far.”
and how much physical strength is required”
Cleo AbramTechnology journalist and content creator
with Sam describing her performance as “honestly brilliant”
“We could see her unofficial times – the sectors and her lap times – and we were thrilled to see the progression
But while getting around the Miami International Autodrome was an achievement in itself
the primary aim of Evo Sessions was to bring fans closer to the sport
and to show them what it takes to become a professional driver
while also being beneficial for Formula E teams as well
“All the creators are getting some very cool content and I think everybody is leaving with a positive reaction
“If it means that we get an extra 200,000 followers or half a million followers
which then turns into another few thousand people coming to races
or 20,000 new real hardcore Formula E fans
Cleo was keen to show how Formula E could not only be embraced by existing motorsport fans
but those interested in innovation and engineering as well
“There are so many different ways to be a fan of Formula E
but this is a sport where there's so much engineering and design
and there's so much to learn about the aerodynamics and control of the car
“I think by allowing more people to have the opportunity to drive the car
to have the opportunity to share their experience
you're allowing more people to become fans because they can have a different entry point to the sport.”
Cleo’s biggest takeaway from Evo Sessions was how different driving a Formula E car really is
“I feel totally in awe of what these drivers do,” she says
“To say that what these drivers do is driving a car
is like saying that what an astronaut does is going for a walk
It's just so complicated and technologically advanced
"I just stand in awe of the drivers that do this for real
The team has allowed me the opportunity to feel like I belong here for a few days
is just that deep appreciation for the people who really do belong.”

associate director of lay ecclesial movements for the Archdiocese of Denver
was born and raised in a Catholic family where faith was always instilled in him
he was baptized just five days after his birth
Although his parents always taught him faith and the love of God
Abram faced challenges that led him away from God’s path when he had to migrate to the United States at the age of 14
“I began to make work the most important thing in my life
which made my relationship with God very lukewarm
There was always a void or a need for something more,” he shared
Abram knew that only God’s way would give his life true meaning
who continually invited him to return to his faith
But it wasn’t until he was forced to attend a formation group so that one of his daughters could make her First Communion that Abram returned to God
a Bible verse was shared that changed everything
“People will be self-centered and lovers of money
lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God
as they make a pretense of religion but deny its power
as if I were being exposed in front of everyone
that all that text was meant for me,” he recalls
Abram focused more on his formation class and began taking it seriously
he attended a charismatic retreat where he had a personal encounter with Christ
my life made a 180-degree change,” he shared
Abram immediately joined a prayer group in the charismatic renewal
I knew I would receive something more than just a paycheck,” he said
Abram knew he could no longer live as he had before
you cannot keep living the same way,” he said
when you have an encounter with the Holy Spirit
Abram began living his faith by dedicating more time to God
he began to be a “sponge” absorbing all the teachings God was giving him
a deep desire to know more and to receive more
a great desire to speak about what God was doing in my life with others
to bear witness,” he expressed.“When you truly have an encounter
you cannot stop talking about what you’ve seen and heard.”
Abram began to discover charisms and gifts he didn’t know he had
communicate the Good News and serve in the Church
Abram dedicated his afternoons to being in the Lord’s presence
like a large magnet pulling me to the Blessed Sacrament
Though he always came home physically tired
he never missed his appointment with the Lord
Why don’t you get me a job where I can repair parishes that need brick repairs?”
Abram became the Coordinator of the Charismatic Renewal movement for the Archdiocese of Denver
building cells to imprison people at the Denver City Jail
and I started building paths to free people through movements
its spirituality and its charism of evangelizing and bringing more souls to Christ,” he said
he stopped attending the adoration chapel every day
but he had the opportunity to attend Mass every morning before starting his workday
“You cannot live without the Eucharist,” he said
“Every time I have needed to talk to Jesus
That’s how I define my devotion to the Eucharist
In addition to his ongoing faith formation over the years
Abram completed his basic education and graduated from Anáhuac University with a degree in Religious Sciences through the partnership between Centro San Juan Diego and the university

Amaree Abram has committed to Tennessee basketball
The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 12.3 points and shot 37.7% on 3-pointers last season
Abram is the third transfer for the Vols and the second guard
He fills a notable need on the perimeter with his experience in college and in the SEC
which is a need for the Vols after losing much of their shooting with outgoing seniors
Tennessee basketball landed its third commit in the transfer portal on Tuesday when Louisiana Tech shooting guard Amaree Abram committed to the Vols
Abram has bounced around in his college career
one season at Georgia Tech and last season at Louisiana Tech where he averaged 12.3 points on 37% shooting from three-point range and 4.4 rebounds per game
What is Tennessee getting in Abram
He does a lot of things well but doesn’t seem elite at anything
The shooting guard’s biggest strength is perhaps his defense
Abram has good size and strong athleticism
Louisiana Tech tasked him with guarding opponents’ best guards last season and Abram largely excelled in that role
Abram gives Tennessee a player that can score in multiple ways
Abram hit 66 three-pointers at a 37% clip last season
Those are sharpshooter numbers but they are the numbers of a good shooter which is something Tennessee badly needs
The left-handed guard also does a really nice job of working in the midrange and has a nice floater
This is an interesting one because what past schools have asked Abram to do is not very similar to what Tennessee typically asks its shooting guards to do
Abram has rarely played off of off ball screens and pin downs
Tennessee will ask him to do that and it is a question about how effective he will be
But with Abram’s strong midrange jumper it’s hard not to be optimistic about his ability to score curling off screens
Abram also has an ability to handle the basketball and play some point guard
How much Tennessee uses him that way will likely depend on how much they trust freshman point guard Troy Henderson
We’ve hit on a couple above when it comes to his fit in Tennessee’s offense
But what about his ability as a defender at the SEC level
Conference USA has some really good guards but it’s not the SEC
Abram will no doubt be a solid defender in the SEC
He hasn’t done a ton of that in his career and has scored more playing off of two feet from five to 10 feet from the basket
I have questions about his ability to score at the rim and get to the foul line
Tennessee would sign up right now for 66 made triples at a 37% clip
But does he face some struggles shooting with a little bit smaller role in the offense
Can Abram become a guy that can hit either more perimeter shots or just hit them at higher clip
It’s a huge get for Tennessee after the Vols missed out on three shooting guards earlier in the transfer season
Abram is not a guarantee to start for Tennessee but it seems likely at this point in time
The Vols now have two scholarships to work with to get to the 13 scholarship limit
Tennessee will look to add at least one more shooting guard and they may add two more perimeter players with those two spots
Louisiana Tech transfer guard Amaree Abram wrapped up a short visit with Tennessee basketball on Monday afternoon after arriving in Knoxville on Sunday night
is Tennessee’s top remaining targets in the transfer portal and one of its top recruiting targets overall
they really invest in their players,” Abram told RTI on what stood out about his visit
The 6-foot-4 shooting guard checks a lot of potential boxes for Tennessee’s 2025-26 roster
Tennessee is in need of multiple guards but particularly shooting guard who can space the floor
Abram made 66 three-pointers at a 37% clip last season for Louisiana Tech and was also one of the best perimeter defenders in Conference USA
In a three game stretch during conference play
Abram defended three of the conference’s best scorers and held them to 10 points per game on 27% shooting from the field
With Tennessee needs perimeter shooting to space the court and defensive stoppers to help mitigate the loss of Zakai Zeigler and Jahmai Mashack
Abram can help fill a void on the Vols’ roster at the moment
coming in and leading guys at the guard positions
Abram told RTI that he doesn’t have a timeline on when he wants to make a commitment but that he also doesn’t have any more visits scheduled at this moment
The 6-foot-4 shooting guard previously took a visit to James Madison earlier in the portal cycle
The Port Arthur, Texas native ranks as a four-star and the No. 217 player in the transfer portal according to 247sports. On3 also ranks him as a four-star transfer and the No
Tennessee basketball currently has three scholarships to work with in the transfer portal
They’ve landed Maryland point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie as well as Vanderbilt power forward Jaylen Carey in the portal to date
Rick Barnes and his staff also landed five-star prep wing Nate Ament alongside three other high school recruits
Centennial School Board members are finalizing plans to hire former Central Bucks School District superintendent Abram Lucabaugh to oversee the district
Board member Patti Crossan confirmed Friday that a board majority has greenlit a reference check and is drafting a contract for Lucabaugh
Current Centennial Superintendent Dana Bedden is set to leave in August
Board members would need to vote to hire Lucabaugh at a public meeting
Board member Charles Martin declined to comment Friday
but noted: "To my knowledge no one has been hired yet."
said he has "deep concerns" about Lucabaugh heading the district
Lucabaugh's presence would create unnecessary division in Centennial and embolden the worst instincts of my fellow directors," Sadowski said in an email
Other Centennial board members did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment sent on Friday afternoon
did not immediately respond to a voice message left on a phone number associated with him Friday
Lucabaugh was a 17-year employee of the Central Bucks School District
He previously served as principal at Central Bucks East High School before he was appointed assistant superintendent in 2018
The departure came four months after he was given an early new five-year contract that included a $90,000 raise
which boosted Lucabaugh’s pay to $315,000 a year
making him one of the highest paid superintendents in Pennsylvania
Bedden earned $227,693 this year in Centennial
which is a smaller district than Central Bucks
Central Bucks also agreed to pay Lucabaugh a $50,000 "settlement payment" to resolve any "potential issues or claims" involving his employment
Lucabaugh of a pattern of harassment that undermined his ability to carry out the functions of his job and contributed to an environment of incivility and hostility during his tenure."
Central Bucks also awarded Lucabaugh a $10,000 consulting deal that kept him on as a consultant to the interim superintendent for 10 days
Lucabaugh issued multiple community statements where he defended the GOP-majority school board's actions
He vowed to protect students from inappropriate library materials
disputing claims that the district was a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ students
or that it failed to value and support all students
The district was named as a defendant in more than 20 state and federal court cases filed during Lucabaugh’s superintendent tenure, according to the dockets. They included seven investigations with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights involving sex discrimination and racial discrimination and retaliation.
his supporters spoke of him as a community leader
Last year Lucabaugh was considered for a new superintendent position, when his name was floated as a finalists in the Oley Valley School District in Berks County.
Centennial looking to hire LucabaughCrossan said she was "very disappointed in this decision,' and that there were other "very good" candidates, adding she was "not sure how we ended up with Mr. Lucabaugh."
Sadowski expressed concerns that some board members would give Lucabaugh a "free pass on the more controversial parts of his background because of their political leanings."
"I don't see how any of us can feel 100% confident we have the best choice in mind considering the many controversies and accusations of discrimination and intimidation during Dr. Lucabaugh's time at Central Bucks," he added. "This board is supposed to represent our neighbors and should be putting the success and safety of all students first."
Crossan also criticized the lack of community involvement and transparency with the decision.
"There is no reason why members of the community can't sit in on interviews," she said.
Sadowski described Lucabaugh as "courteous and professional" during the interview process, but agreed with Crossan that the residents deserve "ample opportunity to ask questions and make their voices heard."
"It would be a travesty to ram a choice this consequential down the throats of Centennial residents without at least a chance to have their valid concerns addressed," Sadowski added. "I can only hope my fellow directors will actually listen with an open mind... (Lucabaugh) is more than welcome to try to change my mind as well."

‘People are often in tears during my talks
telling me these images have changed their lives
But all I’ve done is connect them with the landscape – and those who inhabited it before us’
when I was still figuring out how to use a drone to photograph ancient sites from above
Hillforts look amazing from the air: the ripple effect and autumn colours are extraordinary and it’s a view that the human eye usually never sees
During the iron age there would have been a lot of woodland around
I went there at night and slept there – that’s what I always do – and when I woke at dawn
I got about 15 minutes of low-angle sunlight
The altitude restrictions of drones mean you can’t encompass the entire monument in one shot
so I have to make a composite – a patchwork of 75 shots or so that I stitch together to create a final image
This also means the composites can be printed at a really large scale
Some of the images in my current show are about one metre across – but this one could be printed the size of a billboard
I started driving longer and longer distances to reach prehistoric sitesIt’s an unusual sort of photography as you are not seeing the image through the lens in real time
so you don’t know what’s going to happen until it’s been processed
I’m always looking for abstraction because I think when the eye and the brain are struggling to interpret what they are looking at
all sorts of magic happens and something of the origins of that ancient site gets through to you
unknowing and pleasurable experience to look at these pictures
when you read the label and it says it’s a 6,000-year-old tomb
living among these ancient places – my mother’s and grandparents’ ashes are scattered on a bronze age mound
I became interested in sacred geography when I did a master’s in visual anthropology
I’ve been to a Native American reservation in Montana
and lived with people who had a strong relationship with the landscape
I had been experimenting with a drone for my commercial travel work
then all these interests came together and I knew exactly what I wanted to do
I started driving longer and longer distances to reach prehistoric sites
There was a huge response to the images on social media
which gives me the confidence to carry on putting resources into the project
That attention led to the Aerial Atlas of Ancient Britain in 2022
People often cry during my talks and tell me the images have changed their life
But all I’ve done is facilitate a connection between something in them and the landscape
the past and the people that inhabited this land before us
I’m not talking about anyone’s genetic ancestors
I’m talking about people who lived in the very distant past on the same land that we inhabit

A solo exhibition of Abram’s work, Traces: Pre-Historic Britain from the Air, is at Lighthouse, Poole
Tennessee basketball landed its third transfer of the offseason on Tuesday when Louisiana Tech shooting guard Amaree Abram committed to Rick Barnes and his staff
committing to the Vols’ coaches on his visit before making his decision public a day later
The 6-foot-4 shooting guard chose Tennessee over James Madison
“I feel like on my visit they made it feel like home,” Abram told RTI of why he committed to Tennessee
“It’s a great opportunity for me
I’ve just got so much respect for Coach Barnes and the program and the direction I’m headed I feel like it’s good for me and my family.”
Abram spent his junior season at Louisiana Tech where he averaged 12.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game
The left-handed guard made 66 three-pointers at a 37% clip last season and brings Tennessee some much needed floor spacing and shooting
Abram always guarded the opposing team’s best perimeter player and excelled in the role
In two matchups against Kennesaw State star Adrian Wooley
Abram held him to six and seven points under his season average
“I was a very good defender last year at LaTech,” Abram said
I know they (Tennessee) pride themselves on defense
Opportunity and fit made Tennessee a strong landing spot for Abram as did the opportunity to play for the Vols’ veteran head coach Rick Barnes and his coaching staff
“He’s just a great guy,” Abram said to Barnes
I just feel like he has a good opportunity for me
… I just feel like the coaches were very welcoming and they have my best interest at heart.”
Abram ranks as a four-star and the No. 217 player in the transfer portal according to 247sports. On3 also ranks him as a four-star transfer and the No
While Abram is transferring from Louisiana Tech to Tennessee
The 6-foot-4 guard spent his freshman season at Ole Miss where he started 22 games and averaged eight points per game 36% shooting from three-point range
With that SEC experience and the Vols having a strong team around the transfer guard
Abram comes to Tennessee with high team and person expectations
“I want to win a national championship,” Abram said of his goals
“I want a defensive player of the year
I want to make First Team All-SEC and at the end I want to enter the NBA Draft.”
The Vols now have two scholarships to work with as they fill out their roster for the 2025-26 season
Abram’s addition gives Tennessee a key and necessary piece to the roster
What does he want Vol fans to know about him before he gets to Knoxville
They’re going to love me as a person and we’re going to have a lot of fun next season.”

Unfinished Business: Abram Smith Returns to the Field After Third ACL InjuryApril 14
Defenders running back Abram Smith was riding high on a career year
He led the XFL in rushing with 788 yards and seven touchdowns and played a major role in the team’s championship run
“The credit goes to the team overall
the offensive line up front was just a unit,” Smith said.
His performance raised the bar for his expectations for the following season and he was determined to carry that momentum into 2024
Smith’s expectations were put on pause after suffering a non-contact torn left ACL in practice.
I got a non-contact injury so I did a regular jumpcut that I’ve probably done over a thousand times
the knee kind of just gave and I knew right then and there,” Smith said.
This isn’t Smith’s first or second time dealing with a season-ending ACL injury
he tore his right ACL injury his sophomore year and tore the same one again his freshman year at Baylor
“It’s one of those depressing kinds of deals
It’s not like getting cut or something is wrong with the shoulder and you’re back in a week
You just know instantly that the season is over with.”
Smith began the rehab process during the 2024 season and was fueled by his family’s support to work back to where he wanted to be.
I have goals that I want to achieve and still want to do even if it’s not possible
I’m still trying to pursue that.”
his father instilled a mindset in Smith that has molded the way he attacks life.
‘what kind of man do you want to be?’ You can just stop playing ball and not do what you were meant to do or you can grind it out until the wheels fall off
what do I want to be for myself and my future family?”
it’s fair to question if the risk is really worth the reward
he views the injury as a minor setback for a major comeback
I’ve done it before where I had an ACL injury and I came back
you kind of have to flip that switch from boohoo to I don’t need that negativity
I can’t let this define who I am.”
Smith was back on the gridiron for week one against the Birmingham Stallions at Audi Field.
“It was intense and insane but it was a great feeling overall
there’s things that I got to work on and that’s something that I focused on after the game
excitement and adrenaline that you get when you’re out there.”
Through the first three weeks of the season
the Baylor product ranks third in the UFL with 144 rushing yards
Smith is high on this year’s team.
we got a good offensive unit once we’re able to execute and get rolling
everyone saw for themselves how good they are after their eight sacks in week one.”
Smith looks to make the most of his time in the league on and off the field.
“I always love brotherhood and I always love meeting people
People come from different backgrounds and running back rooms
I was with (Darius) Hagans for a while when I tore my ACL and now here we are because he’s back
getting to know Deon (Jackson) and being able to talk about my experience in the league just amplifies that experience overall with brotherhood
I don’t really think you can find it anywhere else.”
Although the game can be an intense clash between opponents
Smith doesn’t forget that the game should always be fun
“Football’s a serious deal but at the same time
Nothing represents fun more in the UFL than the beer snake at Audi Field
there is a long connection of plastic cups that slithers up a section of devout Defenders fans behind the endzone throughout the four quarters.
I’m looking forward to hopefully one day being able to contribute to it and stack a cup in there
Wait until it fully gets packed and it’s gonna be really insane
Smith brings a refreshed and positive mindset this season and is a walking example of the power of perseverance.
“My football career’s not always going to last forever but I’m trying to make it last as long as I possibly can
I don’t want to have any regrets when it’s all said and done.”

author of The Jewish Question: A Marxist Interpretation
is a man of courage and integrity to be honoured
for much of the radical left Leon’s book is still being read uncritically
invoked as a posthumous blessing on a variety of the left’s own theoretical and practical failings
I accosted a Militant (Socialist Workers Party—U.S.) salesman at ‘No Fear: A Rally in Solidarity with the Jewish People’ in Washington
I felt a bit sorry for him (it was hot and he looked tired)
to see a Trotskyist doggedly plying his wares at this Zionist demonstration
We talked (or I talked while his eyes betrayed his longing for a getaway) about Marx and antisemitism
He gave me a leaflet I probably still have somewhere; it was actually pretty good
He told me the SWP had published a new edition of Abram Leon’s The Jewish Question: A Marxist Interpretation and our conversation turned increasingly testy
He obviously thought that by republishing Leon—a young Jewish Trotskyist who was murdered in Auschwitz—his party was demonstrating its commitment to fighting antisemitism
they were revealing their obstinate refusal to learn from history
We did not achieve a meeting of the minds that sweltering July day
Lately I’ve been thinking about the strange hold Abram Leon has over a segment of the Western left
including the Trotskyist party I belonged to for 25 years
For them—and me all that time—Leon is less a man than a metaphor
a source of nourishment for an array of political and emotional needs
who provides in death the martyr’s posthumous blessing to a variety of sins and failings
where he became a leader of the leftwing Zionist Hashomer Hatzair movement
In 1936 he became interested in Trotskyism and for a while tried to reconcile his beliefs in Zionism and revolutionary Marxism
He broke with Zionism in favor of Trotskyism around the time Hitler’s army invaded Belgium
According to the preface of my 1980 edition of The Jewish Question—a biographical sketch by his comrade
Trotskyist leading light Ernest Mandel—in addition to pursuing his research on Jewish history in the shadow of the Nazi occupation
Leon was a leader of Belgium’s small illegal Trotskyist movement; participated in building the European Conference of the Fourth International held in France in February 1944; and helped illegally organise restive miners in the Charleroi region of Belgium
He decided to settle in Charleroi with his wife to participate in these latter struggles and was immediately discovered there by the police
He perished in its gas chambers in September 1944
The first is to hail him for his courage and mourn his tragic end
It’s hard to criticise a martyr; so much is lost in doing so
We all need myths and heroes to sustain us in our chosen paths
reject Zionism at precisely the moment it was so obviously necessary
In this essay I’ll detail some of the ways I think Leon was wrong
yet first I want to not only acknowledge his obvious courage and integrity
but say I think I can understand why he acted as he did: it wasn’t just crazy or stupid
Rosa Luxemburg wrote that the choices facing future humanity were socialism or barbarism
and she was at least partially vindicated: much of Europe did succumb to barbarism in the 1930s and ‘40s
He could conceive of no partial solutions: only the destruction of capitalism through socialist revolution could save the Jews from the inferno
We now know the conflagration was finally extinguished thanks to the Allied forces rather than socialist revolution—although we also know the cost in human lives and suffering was staggering
For Leon who saw only the horror around him
there must have seemed no other way than to fight as he did
and according to the standards of our terrible knowledge
Leon’s beliefs and actions deserve harsh criticism
after all: he advocated that European Jewry follow his lead
He urged his fellow Jews to reject the Zionists and the promise of Palestine
and stay in Europe to fight for socialist revolution
Leon had a positive vision as well as a negative one. Not Zionism but Marxism was the key to the Jewish people’s salvation. As Steve Cohen writes in his brilliant treatise That’s Funny You Don’t Look Anti-Semitic
Leon’s book represents ‘the most articulate expression’ of the determinism and rigid assimilationism of the Marxist tradition in its approach to the Jews
The title of his book as well as its approach and conclusions echo Marx’s 1844 essay ‘The Jewish Question’; and Marx’s piece is—how shall I put it
better minds than mine have debated the issue for some 150 years—imbued with antisemitism
So I will begin this critique of Leon by briefly addressing his predecessor and his notorious seminal essay
It’s true, as Marx’s defenders say, that Marx’s central aim in the piece was to argue
Yet Marx also claims at length that the ‘worldly cult of the Jew’ consists of ‘huckstering’ and the Jew’s ‘worldly god’ is ‘money’
There really is no charitable way to read Marx’s final clarion cry that ‘the social emancipation of the Jews is the emancipation of society from Judaism’ (emphasis in original)
When you define an entire people as precisely the thing you’re against
it’s impossible not to spread hostility against them
He argues that the Jews are a ‘people-class’
language or culture but the Jews’ socially derived role as moneylenders (or usurers) and merchants
is both the source of the Jews’ survival and the root cause of antisemitism
His approach is not only purely deterministic
Those who endorse the book sometimes acknowledge these errors
suggesting they are attributable to the difficult conditions under which he worked
is not its specific historical inaccuracies but the whole gestalt: the conflation of Jews with moneylending and trade and the upholding of the entirety of the Marxist attitude towards ‘the Jewish Question’ in the hundred years preceding the Holocaust
A consistent downplaying of Western European (as opposed to pogromist Eastern European) antisemitism; inordinate concern with fighting ‘philosemitism’ rather than antisemitism; a tendency to view antisemitic movements somewhat positively as embryonically ‘anti-capitalist’; a desultory response to antisemitic roiling such as the Dreyfus affair; a dogmatic insistence on universalism and denial of Jewish particularism; of course
the castigating of Zionism as ‘reactionary’: all these were consistent features of Social Democracy
which were inherited by the Communists and Trotskyists
Marxist Zionist Maxim Anin objected to the negative manner in which most Marxists
depicted the Jewish people and responded that it was ‘a psychological nonsense’ to advocate assimilation as a programme
He countered that there ‘also exists another Judaism—the enormous majority of the Jewish people—which is neither assimilated nor the prisoner of religious orthodoxy
which struggles energetically and courageously for the creation of new forms of national self-determination’
Anin concluded that Bauer ‘preached national suicide’ to the Jews
Do those who honour the Marxist legacy on ‘the Jewish Question’—the approach upheld in Leon’s book—not today find these words haunting
and a reproach worthy of seriously grappling with
one of the Marxist movement’s most revered (and martyred) heroes
including her consistent opposition to antisemitism
Yet there are also these words: ‘What do you want with this special suffering of the Jews?’ she demanded in a letter to a friend:
The poor victims on the rubber plantations in Putumayo, the Negroes in Africa with whose bodies the Europeans play a game of catch, are just as near to me … Oh, this ‘sublime stillness of eternity’ in which so many screams have faded away unheard. It rings with me so strongly that I have no separate corner in my heart reserved for the ghetto: I am at home wherever there are clouds and birds and human tears.[2]
Does this passionate cry for solidarity with the world’s oppressed (made by a Polish Jew who herself survived a pogrom) not have a drearily familiar ‘Jews Don’t Count’ quality about it
is it not worth thinking about how even some of the Marxist movement’s most consistent opponents of antisemitism were so seemingly dismissive of the Jews’ ‘special suffering’
Leon’s book says little about the Soviet Union
and what’s there is appropriately critical
but because it’s so central an issue to any contemporary Marxist it’s necessary to at least briefly address it
if not resolve the Jewish Question (as an isolated backward country
at least demonstrate the triumph of universalism over particularism
The Bolsheviks promised liberation for Jews and non-Jews alike
suggesting antisemitism would by necessity disappear over the course of the revolutionary struggle
These horrors didn’t take place immediately
despite the Bolshevik leadership’s longstanding opposition to antisemitic terror
Bolshevik power was actually consolidated through anti-Jewish violence’ carried out by Red Guards and local “Bolsheviks”’
Although the Bolshevik leadership made real attempts to stop the atrocities happening in their name
their seizure of power had alienated most of their potential allies
they could neither prevent nor entirely suppress the pogromist bloodletting carried out by those on both sides of the civil war
it’s Jews who have paid the price for the socialist vision
I agree with Johnson that
it was the Russian revolutionary leader Leon Trotsky who
broke from the unscrupulous optimism of Marxist orthodoxy on the Jewish question.’ Trotsky fought Nazism (and Stalinism) with an almost unparalleled sense of urgency and growing clarity
There are signs he became interested in Jewish life in Palestine and began to grapple with Zionism as the European Jews’ situation became increasingly desperate; but as Johnson puts it quoting Sean Matgamna
socialist version of the Zionist territorial state-creating solution’ (emphasis in original)
Trotsky never repudiated his characterisation of Zionism as ‘reactionary’
this is enough to affirm their belief that in joining a thousand foam-flecked anti-Israel demonstrations
They don’t know that in an interview Trotsky held with Jewish correspondents in January 1937
During my youth I rather leaned towards the prognosis that the Jews of different countries would be assimilated and that the Jewish question would thus disappear
The historical development of the last quarter of a century has not confirmed this perspective
The ‘prognosis’ Trotsky spoke of had been shared by virtually the entire Marxist movement and defended even as savagery threatened the Jewish people above all others
They insisted the Jews would find their place in the sun alongside their fellow man; instead unimaginable horrors were inflicted on the Jews by their fellow man
I think the left ‘knows’ this in some uneasy way
This is why they’re so drawn to antisemitism
Jews are hated for reminding them of the ‘special suffering’ associated with the socialist dream
In the more than 75 years that have passed since the Holocaust, only one Marxist, as far as I know, has even passingly touched on this question. In 1954 the Trotskyist intellectual Isaac Deutscher wrote an essay called ‘Israel’s Spiritual Climate.’ Deutscher
had grown up near Oswiecim and seen almost his entire family murdered in that place
Deutscher remained deeply conflicted about Zionism after the war
and like so many other leftists was harshly critical of Israel in 1967
the year of his death; but in this essay made the following remarkable comment:
which was based on a confidence in the European labour movement
a confidence in European society and civilisation which that society and civilisation have not justified
instead of arguing against Zionism in the 1920s and 1930s
I had urged European Jews to go to Palestine
I might have helped to save some of the lives that were to be extinguished in Hitler’s gas chambers
Few Trotskyists know about this suggestion of remorse from one of their own; as a Trotskyist I certainly didn’t
semi-religious accounts of martyrs and saints and a History-ordained battle in which they are clearly on the side of the angels
For all the anguished personal responsibility Deutscher suggests above, he still believed in ‘the non-Jewish Jew’—the Enlightenment’s ‘universal man’—and his irrevocable march towards freedom:
believed in the ultimate solidarity of man; and this was implicit in their attitudes towards Jewry
We are now looking back on these believers in humanity through the bloody fog of our times
We are looking back at them through the smoke of the gas chambers
the smoke which no wind can disperse from our sight
These ‘non-Jewish Jews’ were essentially optimists; and their optimism reached heights which it is not easy to ascend in our times
They did not imagine that it would be possible for ‘civilized’ Europe in the twentieth century to sink to a depth of barbarity at which the mere words ‘solidarity of man’ would sound as a perverse mockery to Jewish ears
Deutscher challenges his reader to maintain optimism despite everything
but it must be tempered by greater understanding
The smoke of the gas chambers has still not dispersed; in fact
Trotsky and Leon believed that freedom for the Jews would come with the inexorable march of progress
only to see the Jews suffer unimaginable horrors as barbarism triumphed instead
It’s long past time for Marx’s heirs to grapple with the inferno that took so many Jewish lives including his
and try to come to terms at last with the Enlightenment’s most terrible deliverance
