The £11.1million buildings at Philip Southcote School were constructed by Morgan Sindall Construction. Facilities include a a teaching block with new classrooms, an ICT suite, and additional provisions for hearing-impaired students, and a pecialist hydrotherapy pool. Surrey County Council’s investment in the new facilities provides 27 new additional school places as well as upgrading spaces for 24 existing places. Philip Southcote is a three-form entry Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) School for students aged 11 to 19. Headteacher Lee Jerwood said: “Having the classrooms all together in this wonderful new building means our departments can work much more cohesively. We’ve got English, Maths, ICT and our deaf pupil provision set up much more effectively for our learners. “One of our students described it as tranquil, which is fantastic for a learning space.” Deputy mayor of Runnymede, Margaret Harnden, cut the ribbon to officially open the new teaching block and pool building and Philip Southcote pupils were delighted to show their families around their new classrooms. The buildings have photovoltaic panels and are built to a high specification to align with the Council’s net zero ambitions, the pool showcases cutting-edge technology and offers carbon reductions of up to 45 per cent. Councillor Clare Curran, cabinet member for children, families and lifelong learning said: “We are thrilled that the pupils of Philip Southcote School can now benefit from these outstanding new facilities. Our goal is to provide local children with additional needs and disabilities the best opportunities for improved outcomes, helping them feel included, transition successfully into adulthood, and receive high-quality education closer to home.” It is the first project to be completed under the SCF5 framework, which was developed to support public sector construction and development in the region. Already the recipient of a British Citizens Award Barrie de Suys is bowling over people in Addlestone with his remarkable zest for life and love for his community He is an extraordinary man not only credited with reviving a sporting institution established in 1931 and on its knees at the beginning of 2020 but he is also shortlisted for ‘Bowls England’s ‘Story of the Year’ award which has been whittled down to three bowls was generally in decline across the UK and Addlestone Victory Park Bowls Club had seen numbers drop to just five prompting a threat of closure by the council amid reports of unfriendliness and a lack of accessibility an Addlestone resident and former captain and committee member of the club when it boasted 100 members back in 2002 who began to drum up interest by walking a staggering 1,440 miles – 2,400 circuits of the park There are now in excess of 40 members of mixed ages or had a number one hit single like the celebrated Sir Captain Tom Moore but in every other respect he deserves the accolades Youthful de Suys was in the Army for five years then worked at British Aerospace in Brooklands before becoming a local driving instructor for 36 years in Woking and then Runnymede He retired in 1999 and has lived in Surrey all his life then New Haw and finally Addlestone since 1972 He retired from outdoor bowling in 2016 having had arthritis in both shoulders and he struggled to get sufficient power in his bowls delivery His medical record included heart attacks and heart surgery In 2018 he had a replacement hip operation which left him with a pronounced limp as was his willingness to serve the local community explains: “At the start of lockdown in 2020 Barrie decided to draw people into the park by walking around the perimeter for charity He was absent on only three days [due to heatstroke] and raised £10,000 for the Royal National Institute of Blind People [he has supported the charity after two cataracts were removed] and the club “He took several falls en route but ignored those who told him to stop he walked far further than from Land’s End to John O’Groats the club decided to invest all its remaining funds in recruiting new players via an Open Day – advertised via local Facebook Groups The reward for the hard work was 25 new members signing up on the day from 30 attendees.Active de Suys was already revered and was by now gardening around the green every day and coaching a new Adults with Learning Difficulties bowling group he helped set up “Park-goers were drawn into the club to see him and give him food and drink People joined up because of his local reputation and his frustration grew at not being able to get his woods even the minimum length a mechanical bowling arm was purchased for him.” thoughts of Bionic Man Barrie launching stray woods at members while threatening passers by and nearby windows were soon erased as Tapper adds: “At first it seemed to be wasted precious money The bowls were fired off in a wide arc from mid-wicket to extra cover he learned how to use his new tool with his wonky shoulders “For new bowlers and weaker bowlers in the club giving up had suddenly become more difficult His spirit and encouragement kept them playing.” He says: “Barrie’s most important contribution of all was to change the direction the club was heading He embodied some new values that seemed to be emerging at the club The creation of a new committee with 10 positions were quickly filled by new members he helped push for the club to adopt three new values which were approved by 87% of the membership in a vote.” to be inclusive and self-sufficient – helping the club become an asset for the local community as a council maintained operation Tapper says: “As a club we weren’t outward looking Before we were turning people away for wearing shorts and things like that Barrie has been at the heart of the transformation and was elected president Now in with a chance of a Bowls England award de Suys says: “I’m very pleased to be in the running and hopefully I will go on and win it All the publicity is good for the local area the park and also the health of the club.” On his walking accomplishments he adds: “People told me to stop Park-goers and dog-walkers now come up to me every day and say He loves gardening and enthuses: “People say they have never seen the park and the green looking so nice in the past 40 years and have given me my own Runnymede Council workers outfit people will come into the park and enjoy some bowls Everyone says that people aren’t socialising outdoors anymore but with all our new members the club is buzzing again.” Tapper adds: “The Bowls England awards dinner is in February in Leicester For one we could have a big sign up saying winner of Bowls England Story of the Year It would be massive for drawing people in for us to grow it would help our fundraising and also our relations with the council Readers can vote for Barrie de Suys here,
