Alexis Mac Allister Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz celebrate after winning the Premier League
Rory McIlroy after winning the golf grand slam in Augusta
John AldridgeYesterday at 10:00THE great champions make it their duty to stay at the top of the sporting mountain– and that’s what Rory McIlroy and Liverpool need to do after their momentous moments of glory
It was hard not to get caught up in the emotion of McIlroy’s Masters win last month
as he finally achieved his ultimate goal in the most dramatic fashion imaginable
Now McIlroy has to find a way to get himself fired up to go again and start a new era of winning
He has another major title to aim for in a couple of weeks' time and should be looking to set new records in his sport and aim for more
The Open Championship is being played on home soil at Portrush again this summer
so I can’t imagine he needs any motivation to go again
I can only speak from personal experience and I never had a problem with setting myself new targets in my career
I scored 474 goals and my desire never waned until I hung up my boots when I was nearly 40
That number is more goals than the great Jimmy Greaves and all the legendary goal scorers from the pre-Premier League
but I’m a Scouser who played for Ireland and because I don't tick the English box
and they don’t seem to mention my name when the debate over great goal scorers comes up
Much to the annoyance of all players who played before the Premier League era
records in football now all seem to be focused on the this relatively new league
but I am the leading living league goal scorer in the history of the English game and it is a record to be proud of
McIlroy also secured his place in sporting folklore after completing the golfing Grand Slam at Augusta
but he should want another green jacket next year and a couple more majors before that if possible
The same desire needs to be rippling through the veins of the Liverpool players after they celebrated winning the Premier League title amid memorable scenes at Anfield last weekend
Arne Slot and his players cannot see this as the end of their story and instead
they should be looking at this as the start of a run of title wins that will continue for years to come
The true winners draw inspiration from days like last Sunday and want more and more of it
We’ve seen it with Manchester City in recent years
as they have dominated the Premier League with a mix of brilliant management
Alex Ferguson did something similar during his time at Manchester United
as he won again and again and ensured that he got rid of players who were not willing to join him on that journey
We need to see something similar at Liverpool over the next few years
as Slot has earned the right to sign some top players to add to the squad he inherited form Jurgen Klopp and I am hoping to see four top players added to the squad this summer
Ferguson was brilliant at signing great players when his United teams were on top and that’s what Liverpool need to do now as the mood around the club is so positive
I was at Anfield last weekend for what was a fantastic occasion as the Premier League title was clinched in style with a performance we have waited a few weeks for
Liverpool have been poor in their recent matches
with the lead at the top of the table taking some of the sting out of their game and the strikers
they all bounced back into form for the big day at Anfield and the 5-1 win against Tottenham was one of those moments that you wanted to last forever
I could see people in the stands not wanting to leave as they had waited so long to see Liverpool clinch the title in front of The Kop and the moment was everything they had hoped for
Now we can say definitively that Liverpool are undisputed as the greatest team in English football
as they are level with Manchester United on 20 league titles and they have four more European Cups in the trophy cabinet
Slot should be telling his players to enjoy this title win and the belief they should get from it has to stand them in good stead as they start next season as champions
I won’t be alone in enjoying watching Chelsea players give Slot’s side a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge today
as this club has been one of the less than friendly rivals for Liverpool this century
with the battles against Jose Mourinho’s Blues leaving plenty of scars
Some Chelsea fans have been pretty vile with the chants they have directed at Liverpool fans down the years and it will be satisfying to see them applauding the Liverpool team as they step onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge this afternoon
today’s match means a lot more to Chelsea than it does to Slot and his players as their job is done for this season
but they should get their minds back on the job and finish this season in style
Liverpool have lost some of the momentum they built up over the last few weeks and that contributed to the Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain and the Carabao Cup final defeat against Newcastle
Champions have an aura that should give them an edge over their rivals
but it also means you are a team that can be shot at and everyone will want to beat Liverpool next season
So Slot and his players have to put a marker down to confirm they are already looking ahead to next season and continuing their winning form in the final few games
They need to finish off this memorable season in style and that means setting a few mini-targets like getting over the 90-point barrier and banishing any nonsense that they only won the title because all their rivals lost their way
LIVERPOOL have finally knocked Manchester City off their perch
but there have to be big question marks over what has gone wrong for Pep Guardiola’s side this season
While Liverpool have clearly been the best team in the league this season
City should not be as far behind them as they are and questions should be asked of the manager and his players
They enjoyed all the plaudits when they were collecting the trophies
so what has happened to Pep Guardiola and his team for them to lose their way so badly
You might say they lost the appetite to keep winning after so much success in recent years
but that should only take a few percentage points off your performance
They have been out of the title race for many months now
so that lack of motivation theory isn’t a valid excuse
but great teams cannot fall apart when they lose one key player
City are now pushing to secure a Champions League finish and win the FA Cup
Guardiola will justifiably claim they have salvaged a pretty average season
I would suggest there are bigger problems at City than the absence of one key midfielder and they will be under pressure to bounce back next season

The incident was first reported to Walsall Council on Thursday 27 February 2025 through the council’s website
The report indicated that mattresses were initially found along the Northgate Way Road and footpath in Aldridge but were later moved to the layby to avoid obstructing the road.
The council's fly-tipping taskforce investigated the area
which was then cordoned off as part of the council’s ‘EnviroCrime’ initiative
This initiative treats fly-tipped sites as crime scenes and underscores Walsall Council’s zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping
ensuring that offenders are aware an investigation is underway
By treating these sites as active crime scenes
the council aims to deter future fly-tipping incidents
Walsall Council offers a £500 reward for information leading to a successful prosecution for fly-tipping. To report any details relating to this incident, or report a fly-tip in general visit: https://go.walsall.gov.uk/apply/myaccount-online-services/report-fly-tip.

An exhibition of Aldridge’s work is also on display in both Lyndsey Ingram’s new gallery space on Bourdon Street and Sotheby’s galleries (until 17 April). Aldridge’s stint at Sotheby’s coincides with the launch of TOILETMILES PAPERALDRIDGE, the third edition of trendy TOILETPAPER magazine founded by Cattelan and the photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari. The elusive Cattelan popped into Sotheby’s and was papped by Aldridge, looking as enigmatic as ever in his fetching portrait.

Residents were advised to keep doors and windows shut and stay away from the area while crews deal with the incident
On Sunday (5 January 2024) the fire was confirmed to be out
although some crews remained on scene to liaise with the site managers
It was reported that no one was harmed in the incident
A spokesperson from Biffa told Letsrecycle.com: “We can confirm that the fire services have been called to attend an incident at the Biffa Aldridge processing site
The building has been fully evacuated and all colleagues accounted for with no injuries reported
We would like to thank the emergency services for their swift response.”

“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and investigations are underway.”

Severance: Season 2 – Adam Scott as Mark Scout | Image courtesy of AppleTV+
Severance may appear far-fetched but this compelling dystopian drama is an increasingly relevant commentary on the future of work
Being the MP for Weston-super-Mare leaves little time to indulge my fascination with alternate reality drama – but catching up with Season 2 of Severance is my one guilty pleasure since it hit AppleTV+ in February.
90s GCSE English literature permanently implanted dystopian fiction like 1984
Brave New World and The Handmaid’s Tale at the centre of my consciousness
Severance details a dystopian world where employees undergo a neurosurgical procedure to sever their work memories from their personal lives
political and philosophical consequences of a hyper-controlled
Compelling viewing it most certainly is.
it struck me very early on that Season 2 hit me differently
It was only when asked to write this article I started to think it’s because as a legislator
in a world of such dramatic and fast-paced technological change
I have a different level of responsibility than when I watched Season 1
At first the concept of Severance seems far-fetched
a company that asks some of its employees to undergo brain surgery so that when they’re at work
they have no memory of their personal lives
its themes become increasingly relevant.
It struck me very early on that Season 2 hit me differently
Severance highlights that no matter how much we try to disconnect work from the rest of our lives
we are more than just our jobs – our identities
emotions and relationships cannot be switched off
how far are we willing to push our humanity
The show demonstrates how a strict separation between work and life can strip employees of agency and autonomy.
and keep myself to myself for fear of being outed
I knew my reality but kept it separate from my workmates out of fear
I’m grateful that this is no longer the case for me
but severance as a concept is something many of us do or have done selectively in many ways
What struck me most about Severance was its deeper philosophical question: if our memories and experiences define who we are
what happens when half of our existence is erased?
we see firsthand how workers’ rights have evolved
from calls for a ‘right to disconnect’
to demands for improved mental health support
The issues raised by Severance echo the conversations happening in Parliament today
The show forces us to reflect on the importance of not only fair pay but also supporting dignity
it serves as a timely commentary on the future of work
highlighting the need for a balance between productivity and humanity
stronger workers’ rights protections
and the ethical implications of workplace control over people’s lives

Ellie Aldridge receiving the first ever kite Olympic medal
Kite ace honoured alongside host of Team GB stars
Ellie Aldridge has been made an MBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours following her groundbreaking victory in the women’s kite competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics
Aldridge made history as the first ever Formula Kite gold medallist
defeating 19 of the world’s best to take the top spot in Marseille this summer
which involves competitors flying above the water on hydrofoils at up to 40 knots powered by huge kites
was made a Member of the British Empire for services to sailing
“I feel very honoured to be on the New Year’s Honours list,” said Aldridge, from Poole, Dorset
and this feels like the cherry on the cake
I didn’t go to university and I never thought I’d ever have any letters after my name
“To be recognised alongside extremely inspiring and extraordinary people is such a privilege and I do believe sport can change lives for the better
“I hope that I have and can continue to help inspire everyone who watched the Olympics and was intrigued to try kitesurfing or any watersports to give it a go.”
The honour caps a stellar few years for Aldridge
who joined the British Sailing Team in 2016 as a dinghy sailor before switching to kiting
In 2018 she took a gamble on a new talent ID programme the team was running called Kite4Gold to identify and develop potential medallists in the incoming Formula Kite class
Within six months she was the European champion
and went on to become a regular feature of the World Championship podium
Her Olympic preparation enjoyed a boost when she was crowned the 2023 European champion
as well as taking silver at the Paris 2024 test event
Light winds in Marseille hampered the kite racing
with only six races held in the run-up to the medal series
tied on points with France’s Lauriane Nolot
but powered her way to Team GB’s 13th gold with two convincing race wins
Aldridge joins a host of Team GB stars picking up honours
including 800m gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson and individual trampoline Olympic champion Bryony Page

Fighting for quality news media in the digital age
Aldridge said it had been a "tough but exciting" decision
Gemma Aldridge, the former editor of the Sunday Mirror and Sunday People
Aldridge, previously a features editor and assistant editor at the titles, became editor at the two Sunday papers in April 2021
In March this year she was appointed executive editor (weekends) of the Mirror with a remit covering all weekend content across the brand’s print and digital platforms under editor-in-chief Caroline Waterston
Aldridge wrote on Twitter/X on Monday that after 12 years at the Sunday Mirror and People she had made “the tough but exciting decision” to leave the papers “for pastures new”
contacts and freelancers for coming on the journey
“Becoming an editor towards the end of the pandemic in 2021 was a whirlwind
the fall of the BBC’s anchor and ITV’s golden boy and the general election of a generation
“I’ll be forever proud of the work we’ve done — pedophiles
wrongdoing and racism at the heart of government exposed
Voices of so many extraordinary and marginalised real people amplified… and a whole load of juicy showbiz scoops in between.”
Aldridge has previously written for Press Gazette about how journalism’s talent shortage can be fixed by getting more young people from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds into newsrooms
Press Gazette understands Aldridge’s departure is unrelated to news of cuts at sister title the Sunday Express
which includes the departure of editor David Wooding amid a move to a seven-day operation

Photographer Miles Aldridge is to host a “marathon” of one-on-one Polaroid sessions for Sotheby’s visitors to experience “15 minutes of fame”
The project, ToiletMiles PaperAldridge: Polaroid Portraits, will take place at the Sotheby’s galleries in New Bond Street, London
with proceeds going to the Elton John Aids Foundation
Having previously photographed the likes of actresses Viola Davis and Maisie Williams, designer Donatella Versace and singer Sir Elton
the project offers members of the public the chance to take home their own Polaroid portrait after a session with the artist
Aldridge said: “I have never done anything like this before
recording a slice of British society through this marathon Polaroid photo session
which feels like a wonderful way to celebrate this project with Sotheby’s
as well as my collaboration with Toiletpaper
“It’s part Technicolor dream and part cinematic set with a touch of the subversive
anyone can experience 15 minutes of fame under my lights
whether that means striking a pose with a retro telephone or disappearing behind a feather boa
why not turn it into my photographic playground
I hope that my takeover inside the hallowed walls of the auction house will allow visitors to not only fully immerse themselves within my world
as I invite the public to participate in my biggest and longest running portrait shoot: ToiletMiles PaperAldridge: Polaroid Portraits.”
The photo session will feature a set designed by Aldridge and props including oversized glasses
tea cups and feather boas allowing participants to immerse themselves
The collaboration coincides with the launch of ToiletMiles PaperAldridge, a special edition issue of the Toiletpaper magazine founded by artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari.
Cattelan said: “We have long admired Miles’s work — his unique vision and the way he transforms reality into a hyper-real, captivating world.
“Collaborating with him was an opportunity to merge our creative worlds and witness what could emerge from the encounter between his vivid colours and our visual language. Every collaboration is an experiment, and working with Miles was a constant source of surprise.”
Ferrari added: “Miles possesses a highly distinctive aesthetic, crafted with cinematic precision, but what fascinates us most is his ability to depict society with a gaze that is as sharp as it is dreamlike.
“What we share is the idea of using imagery as a tool to explore the contemporary world — not with judgment, but with irony — leaving space for the viewer’s own interpretation.”
Sotheby’s and the Lyndsey Ingram gallery will also co-host an exhibition until April 17 displaying Aldridge’s work from the past 20 years.
ToiletMiles PaperAldridge: Polaroid Portraits takes place from April 8 to 11 with sessions held from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 5.30pm.
Visitors must book a session in advance and will be given 15 minutes with the photographer.

to Sotheby’s galleries for four days only from 8th-11th April 2025
At the same time, Sotheby’s and Lyndsey Ingram Gallery will play co-host to an exhibition of works by Miles created over the last 20 years – some borne from his most iconic shoots and others that have never been shown publicly before
the exhibition runs from 31st March through to 17th April and will go on view in both Lyndsey Ingram’s new gallery space on Bourdon Street and Sotheby’s galleries on New Bond Street
The exhibition runs in parallel with Miles’ full takeover of Sotheby’s Story Cafe (31st March – 2nd May)
which will see him cover the walls – from floor to ceiling – as well as the tabletops
coffee cups (and more) in his bold and kaleidoscopic style
Miles’ takeover at Sotheby’s and Lindsey Ingram gallery coincides with the launch of “TOILETMILESPAPERALDRIDGE”
the third edition from TOILETPAPER magazine founders
artist Maurizio Cattelan andphotographer Pierpaolo Ferrari
We have long admired Miles’s work — his unique vision and the way he transforms reality into a hyper-real
Collaborating with him was an opportunity to merge our creative worlds and witness what could emerge from the encounter between his vivid colors and our visual language
and working with Miles was a constant source of surprise
Miles possesses a highly distinctive aesthetic
but what fascinates us most is his ability to depict society with a gaze that is as sharp as it is dreamlike
What we share is the idea of using imagery as a tool to explore the contemporary world — not with judgment
but with irony — leaving space for the viewer’s own interpretation
TOILETMILES PAPERALDRIDGE: POLAROID PORTRAITS
I have never done anything like this before
recording a slice of British society through this marathonpolaroid photo session
as well as my collaboration with TOILETPAPER
It’s part technicolor dream and part cinematic set with a touch of the subversive
Drawing inspiration from his TIME cover shoot with Sir Elton John (“Icon of the Year” issue
Miles will create a specially designed set in Sotheby’s galleries
which participants will be able to step into
to experience a once-in-a-lifetime polaroid portrait session with Miles himself
Miles will donate a portion of the funds to The Elton John Aid’s Foundation
TOILETMILES PAPERALDRIDGE: POLAROID PORTRAITS takes inspiration from August Sander’s lifelong typology project
for which he amassed an archive of photographs capturing the everyday people of the Weimar Republic
Please note: portrait sessions are non-refundable

Miles Aldridge Take Over 31st March – 2nd May Sotheby’s Story Cafe
TOILETMILES PAPERALDRIDGE, 24th March – 17th April, Lyndsey Ingram
Miles Aldridge’s interest in photography began at an early age when he was given a Nikon F camera by his father
becoming a photographer had not always been on the cards
young Miles had hoped to become a film director
starting his career as an illustrator and music video director before ultimately turning to photography in the nineties – and sort of by chance
Miles was in his twenties at the time when his then girlfriend
so off they went to Hampstead Heath where he took
a “very ordinary photograph.” Finding its way into her portfolio
his portrait was soon seen by the editors of Vogue who immediately asked for an introduction to Miles
His first commission quickly led to the next and within six months he was travelling to the United States to shoot covers for major publications: “I landed in this field at a moment when British photography was exploding
The fact that I was from London, had a British accent and a camera ticked all the right boxes in New York
It was only when Miles started working with Franca Sozzani
the legendary editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia
that fashion photography truly became his calling
He worked with her for 16 years – often alongside Helmut Newton
Peter Lindbergh and later Tim Walker – and in the process was able to marry his love of cinema with his newfound admiration for fashion
Franca taught him that fashion photography was much more than just showing the clothes
Miles would approach his craft just as a director would approach a cinematic film: each “scene” meticulously arranged and constructed with painstaking attention to lighting
His photographs become frames snatched from a broader story
the mise-enscènes created by Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch never far from his mind
Domesticity remains a recurring theme in Miles’ photographs
frequently eroticised images probe society’s idealised notions of domestic bliss where dark undercurrents swirl beneath a flawless surface
A woman is often the focal point of his compositions
surrounded by the detritus of a dinner party or smashed broken glass
or with other “actors” they seem to completely ignore
these women recall his mother who he remembers from childhood would often wear an “un-emotional
mask-like face” but deep down would be battling with her own internal struggles
Much of Miles’ oeuvre not only references film culture but also makes subtle references to the art historical canon
of Lily Cole and Maisie Williams draw inspiration from Northern Renaissance masters such as Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein
while ‘Ophelia’ recalls John Everett Millais’ Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece of the same name housed in Tate Britain’s collection
Diane Arbus and the cinematic nature of Cindy Sherman’s work continue to inspire Miles in his practice: “Cindy Sherman and Diane Arbus have been hugely influential on my practice
They are women who were not just glamazons in the photographic landscape
they pointed their cameras at women who were
Their contemporaries were aiming their cameras at stunning beauties
whereas they were aiming theirs at those women who might have been considered ‘outsiders’ at the time
There is a strangeness in theirbehaviour and a strangeness in their dress

Sir Ben Ainslie holds the most amount of World Sailor of the Year titles
sealing the women's kite title in Marseille on Thursday (8 August)
I just came here to race the best I could against the best in the world and today I was better than them
Early in the race, disaster struck for Nolot as she fell and ended up in the water, dropping back to fourth before the first mark. This allowed Aldridge a lead that she would not relinquish. She crossed the finish line to secure gold and became the first athlete, man or woman, to win a kite event at the Olympic Games.
Nolot held silver because of her strong performance in the opening series. Daniela Moroz of the United States was in contention for bronze but picked up a penalty that derailed her chances.
"It’s going to take time (to sink in) because I am a bit disappointed," Nolot said. "I was hoping to have the gold. I’ll try to enjoy the silver one and now it's the holidays so it feels great."

today confirmed the withdrawal from merger discussions
'Having spent the last few months getting to know the firm and its lawyers
exploring the potential benefits of merging our two firms
we have developed enormous respect for their people and their business,' he said
on closer inspection we realised that joining forces with this particular firm would not deliver the scale of strategic advantages we were looking for.'
Barrow said that a 'merger or a bolt-on' has been in the firm’s sights for four years
'But we have been in no rush: we are in a strong position as an independent
and finding the right merger partner or team acquisition is the priority
more than timing. Our growth plan continues!'
Mackrell Solicitors has been approached for comment.

A Birmingham councillor has repeated calls for a delayed railway station project to be radically changed from what is currently planned
Tim Huxtable wants West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker to consider a new proposal involving Aldridge Station which will see its route go directly to Birmingham instead of Walsall with new stations being created along the way
He said reopening the Sutton Park line would support major new housing developments in Langley and Castle Bromwich
He had previously put forward the idea at a Board meeting in July last year
At the West Midlands Combined Authority overview and scrutiny committee meeting
Mr Parker asked Councillor Huxtable to write in with his proposition for it to be considered
The existing Aldridge Station plan with diesel services to Walsall was originally put forward by former Mayor Andy Street and
£3.6 million has been secured and committed to developing feasibility studies and a business case for it
the scheme was one of a number of transport projects delayed due to soaring costs
Aldridge was delayed indefinitely until the full funding for the project was available
Mr Parker commissioned Arup to carry out a review into the issues and a report said only £3.6 million of the £30 million required had been secured
But Aldridge-Brownhills’ Conservative MP Wendy Morton said the Mayor was being ‘disingenuous’ about the station issue and said she and Mr Street had secured the £30 million for it to be delivered by 2027
Councillor Huxtable said: “Aldridge Station
let’s not go back into the funding because we disagree on that one
“Why not Aldridge to Birmingham via Sutton Park to support the development of the sustainable urban extension in Langley which will need good public transport links
Why not adjoin by Castle Bromwich and open at the station at Castle Bromwich also which is in the Castle Vale area
“Reopen that line so, rather than going Aldridge to Walsall and from Walsall then to Birmingham
just direct Aldridge to Birmingham City Centre via the Sutton Park line reopening stations and work towards a strategic business case based on that which will connect with new housing
new economic growth and new regeneration.”
Mr Parker said: “I would welcome you writing in with that proposition of yours
it’s a very different proposition to the project that was placed in front of me when I was elected
“Please feel free to write in with your proposals and we will take it through the necessary authorities to look at its viability and any case for delivery.”
Mr Parker said he and the Combined Authority remained committed to the original project but added it needed to go through the business case and show value for money

Members of Aldridge Youth Theatre are hard at work putting the finishing touches to their latest pantomime production which gets underway in eight days time
The case of Sinbad the Sailor range in age from 11-21 and the classic tale featuring the swashbuckling adventures of the intrepid mariner is set to wow audiences on a mammoth 11 day run starting on Friday January 10
Neville Ellis has written the script and Jonathan Backrath directs
Jonathan has been with the charity - which provides theatrical training and opportunities for youngsters from a purpose built centre in Aldridge - for 27 years
He said people who come and see the pantomime will be entertained by a show full of music
drama and fun and that everyone had been working hard in rehearsals
Jonathan said: "The last time Sinbad was done here was in 2015 so for a lot of people it will be the first time they have seen us do it
It's a great script based on the old witch of the sea but with a new take on the classic tale
"We have a cast of 40 people so as you can imagine it takes some discipline and hard work to keep everything together - we feed them a lot of chocolate which I find helps
but they are all looking forward to entertaining in front of live audiences
"They are exhausted generally at the end of the run of shows but they all love doing it and have such fun
which of course is the essence of a great pantomime."
Sinbad the Sailor runs at Aldridge Youth Theatre from Friday January 10 to Saturday January 25 with evening

Kirkby Thore lost one of its long-time residents recently
when Ann Aldridge died peacefully at the Cumberland Infirmary
Ann first came to Kirkby Thore during the Second World War
when she and her family and cousins were evacuated to Church Gate
She then returned to live in the same house with husband Alan and their three daughters in 1964
She was well-known and well-loved by her local community
as she was one of those people who was involved in almost everything
She was head cook at the primary school for 27 years
Brown Owl to the Kirkby Thore brownie pack
a very keen gardener and an avid fan of cricket
She taught numerous local children to ride as well as her own daughters
for which she was given the Cubitt Award for her many years of voluntary service
she took up endurance riding and became a staunch member of both the Endurance GB Cumbria group and the Scottish Endurance Riding Club
and volunteering after she no longer competed
She rode regularly well into her 80s and was still caring for her last remaining horse
She always said that whether it was singing in the choir
going to WI or competing on one of her horses
it was the social aspect and the people who mattered more than anything
She remained close friends with many of those she met through her various interests
Corin and Shonagh — eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren
friends – not necessarily in that order – are the things I think of when remembering mum
She was a very sociable person and loved nothing better than sitting around a dinner table having a chat with friends and family – always with a glass of red wine to hand
Mum’s family had a long association with Kirkby Thore before we came to the village in 1964 to live at Church Gate
moved to the house with their parents during the war to escape the bombing in Sunderland
She attended the primary school — in Miss Lightburn’s class
who was still teaching when we started there
As children we were given pretty much free rein to do what interested us
to care for and respect the countryside and to join any club or organisation we wanted to
Our family holidays usually involved camping in some out of the way place like an old quarry or the middle of a forest — what is now known as ‘wild camping’ — back then
we didn’t know there was any other kind of camping
slept on the ground in a leaky tent with just a groundsheet under us
climbed trees and cliffs and caught fish for breakfast — if we were lucky and patient enough
I can still remember the anticipation and excitement when the car was packed to the gunnels
with the dog sitting on top of the luggage in the back
It’s only looking back that I realise how fortunate we were to have those experiences — even if they came with midge bites
I vividly remember mum’s fury when dad persuaded the doctor not to cut the fly
and it was removed intact with the whole family watching
I am sure that the childhood my sisters and I enjoyed has influenced our adult lives — our love of the countryside
and the way our families have developed into the diverse wonderful people they all are
Celebrating mum’s life with our family and her friends
I think we all recognise her as a true individual who lived her life to the full on her own terms
and who touched many people’s lives in different ways
