Ten-man Oxford City were made to settle for a point away at Alfreton Town in Vanarama National League North after a late George Cantrill goal broke the Hoops' hearts found an inch of space and powered a shot from the edge of the box past a helpless David Robson It was the same story in the second-half as the eleven City players strapped themselves in for 45 minutes of defending Ezennolim and Roddy shook off any slight hint of rustiness to slot back into the team seamlessly and Jalen Jones was magnificent in the middle of a back three (which more often than not turned into a five) nothing seems to be going City's way and that was emphasised ten minutes from time when Jones was dismissed for a second yellow card.  He subsequently hit the ball at the unbalanced City man and the ball hit his arm.  the decision (and common sense) deserted City and left a sour taste in the mouth of everyone in attendance from a Hoops point of view.  Jed Abbey's resulting free-kick smashed the top of the bar to the relief of the hardy travelling contingent of City supporters in the Impact Arena ALL RIGHTS RESERVED | OXFORD CITY FOOTBALL CLUB With the National League North promotion race coming down to the wire the Iron were back in league action this evening when they made their shortest trip of the season to face mid-table Alfreton Town Scunthorpe went into the fixture having lost just one of their previous nineteen fixtures and were hoping to keep this run going against Billy Heath’s Red’s Following a 1-0 victory over Leamington at the weekend first-team manager Andy Butler would rotate his side with two changes to his starting XI These alterations would come in the form of the returning of Oli Rose first of all who slotted back into his familiar right-back position this change meant that fellow full-back Joe Starbuck dropping back to the bench there was to be another change to the United forward line as striker Chris Wreh who was subbed off at half-time against Leamington was made to miss out through injury and was replaced by the inform Irishman Carlton Ubaezuonu After a change of ends prior to kick-off and some brief pauses to remove some stray pieces of training equipment from the corners the game was finally set underway by the hosts who attempted to shock the Iron with a number of early crosses into the area that was eventually dealt with by the alert United defence After some nervy early exchanges in which both sides struggled to control the ball a chance would finally be crafted by the Reds After dispossessing a Scunthorpe player deep in their own half it would take just one solitary pass through the middle to calf open the Scunthorpe defence This long ball allowed target man striker Jake Day to run in behind and go one on one with Ross Fitzsimons The shot stopper rushed from his goal mouth to meet the striker and did fantastically well to spread himself out and save the shot from close range Alfreton were doing everything in their power to slow down the game and neutralise the Iron’s threats Because of this Scunthorpe needed to make the most of the chances they were going to get and nearly did so through a Mark Beck header after 23 minutes It was some lovely build-up play from United that opened space for a Kian Scales cross the ball from Scales was ferocious and direct but found Beck in the box who managed to direct an effort down but into the welcoming grasp of goalkeeper David Robson The next chance in the game would come for the Reds and it was to be the best chance of the game to that point Another long hoof forward was to be cushioned down by Day on the edge of the area and land back at the forwards feet with space and time to pull the trigger The former Bridlington Town striker did well to get over the ball and drive his shot at Fitzsimons who was forced into a spectacular diving save to his right that denied an almost certain goal Following this opportunity to take the lead the deadlock would be broken almost immediately after by the Iron After some patient play to build the chance the ball would make its way to the returning Rose 25 yards from goal After raising his head an opting to try and pick out a Scunthorpe man in the box he would drive a low bouncing ball into the area that evaded all attempts to clear and found the lurking run of Ubaezuonu at the back post with just the keeper to beat he managed to steer the ball into the top corner for the games much-needed opener This was to be the last notable action of a tricky first half for United and a spirited performance was required in the second period if they were to push on for the points From the restart the Iron went in immediate search of another goal to further extend their advantage and were provided with the perfect chance to do so from an early free-kick mere yards outside of the penalty area After Beck’s hard work to win the set-piece Roberts would stand over the ball with one thought on his mind and looked to execute it with a cunning strike to test Robson The eventual effort was sent spiralling towards the wall and took a slight deflection to wrongfoot the keeper that send it marginally wide of the target to the Reds' relief Both sets of fans were made to wait for the games next action as the encounter descended into a scrappy brawl of cynical fouls and reckless challenges that resulted in multiple cards for both sides When the next chance would finally arise it would be the clinical Iron who struck again at a crucial stage in the game It was Ubaezuonu who picked up the ball on the left flank and chopped inside past former Scunthorpe full-back Luke Matheson once he’d weaved his way into the box the Irishman hooked the ball back to the edge of the area where Kian Scales was waiting to advance into the box and brilliantly place the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 With time running out for the hosts to find a route back into the tie they would almost establish a foothold with a moment of individual brilliance from the Bolton Wanderers loanee Matheson After a bouncing ball landed at the right-back’s feet he needed no further invitation to smash a brilliant effort at goal that left Fitzsimons planted to the spot however fortunately for the Iron the ball would cannon back off the underside of the bar before being swept behind by Day from a matter of yards After almost 10 more minutes of grafting and scrapping from the full 16-man Scunthorpe squad the game would be brought to its end by referee Joe Moss who signalled three more points towards the eventual target for Butler’s boys but it was never going to be at the Impact Arena and the result proved the character and desire among this Scunthorpe team as it helped propel them back to the summit of the from Liam Waldock and another from Jake Day had put Alfreton firmly in control Lewis Salmon made it four soon after the hour mark before Joao Silva pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later The visitors came out of the gates quickly and started the game on the front foot putting the young Celts under a lot of pressure early on It didn’t take long for Alfreton to take the lead as they worked the ball down the right wing and to the byline and pulled it across the box where Waldock was waiting to open the scoring for the visitors The Celts defensive resilience was tested well by Alfreton and Will Brook making his Farsley debut between the sticks after arriving on loan from Nottingham Forest was up to the task on plenty of occasions to keep out as barrage of shots from the visitors and he was needed on the 17th minute as he kept a shot out from close range before Abankwah made a goal line clearance as the ball bounced around the box Alfreton aided by Lumb’s long throw ins would cause problems when winning a throw in anywhere in Farsley’s half and it created a goal in the 41st minute as the ball came in and found the head of Jake Day who steered it home to double the visitors’ lead Two minutes later it was 3-0 as Billy Heath’s side broke down the right and Brook did well to pressure Day into an early chip which Misambo managed to clear but only as far as Waldock who scored his second of the game into an empty net Alfreton started the second half well and pulled further in front on the 64th minute as another long throw in was sent into the box and was taken down well by Salmon who turned and slotted in another goal for the visitors The Celts ensured Alfreton wouldn’t leave Silverlands with a clean sheet as Joao Silva pulled a goal back for Farsley in the 66th minute as he received the ball inside the Alfreton half and drove into the box before switching back onto his right foot and calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net to give the Celts a glimmer of hope The Celts showed a lot of resilience in the second half dealing well with a lot of long balls crosses and long throw ins against a very physical opposition The visitors almost made it five deep into stoppage time with the last kick of the game as Kobe Hall’s free kick on the edge of the box clipped the outside of the post Tarmac Silverlands Stadium Silverlands Buxton Derbyshire SK17 6QH The Seals recorded their first home victory of 2025 as we beat Alfreton Town 2-0 at the Deva Stadium It was an utterly dominant display from the hosts who reduced the opposition to very little chances Iwan Murray came agonisingly close to breaching David Robson’s net on the quarter of an hour mark with a rasping effort from distance Tom Peers’ desire saw him dispossess Dwanye Wiley on the halfway line before Murray drove through the middle and struck from 20 yards out The ball whistled just wide and hit the back stanchion Heroic defending from Adam Lund then denied Declan Weeks from breaking the deadlock as the midfielder danced through the Alfreton defence Kurt Willoughby was then thwarted by Nathan Newall who had scurried back onto his goal-line The opening 25 minutes of the second period was uneventful as the visitors defended deep inside their half the Blues finally broke down the Alfreton resolve through a familiar source Weeks’ deep corner was met by Connell Rawlinson who’s looping header clipped the post The Alfreton defence was motionless and Harrison Burke reacted quickest to smash a half-volley past Robson It was third consecutive match that the defender had netted in and his ninth of the season The Blues continued to control proceedings and came close to doubling their advantage Nathan Woodthorpe’s strike was blocked by a teammate before Connor Woods failed to capitalise on a loose ball on his home debut but his shot deflected off Lund and into the goalkeeper’s hands Weeks would produce one of the assists of the season to put the hosts two up Our number four spotted the run of Peers and floated an inch-perfect pass from deep into the striker Peers controlled the ball before delicately dinking it over the onrushing Robson and into the back of the net in front of the Harry McNally Terrace Billy Heath’s side could not conjure up a response as they fell to a fourth successive league defeat A third consecutive victory for Calum McIntyre’s side sees us climb into third position and we now only trail league leaders Kidderminster Harriers by three points are a community benefit society operating under the name of Chester Football Club and are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority The club is fan owned and does not have any major shareholders The Reds would have to win at Radcliffe and hope that Peterborough Sports win at Scarborough Athletic in order to claim 13th place come the end of the season It has to be said Billy Heath has done a remarkable job in recent weeks to turn around Alfreton`s slump which saw them as low as 18th in early March a run of seven matches unbeaten W3 D3 in National League plus a Derbyshire Senior Cup Victory has propelled Ofton to a comfortable midtable finish Two gooals in five minutes in the opening stages of the second period brough the Bucks level.Alfreton continued to battle gamely for a win over their county rivals however and a inch perfect freekick from Jed Abbey similar to that against Farsley back in August restored Alfreton`s lead.Ofton held on to record an terrific result and a great way to finish their home fixtures Saturday`s opponents Radcliffe suffered a 5-0 thrashing on Easter Monday but are safe in the knowledge they already confirmed they will be playing in National League North for a second successive season with a 2-1 win away at already relegated Farsley Celtic If selected George Cantrill will be in line to make his 150th appearance for alfreton at the Neuven Stadium In addition Billy Heath`s men could come up against Matty Carson who enjoyed a short loan spell with Ofton on loan from Grimsby Town which included a goal in Alfreton colours in an away 2-0 win at Mickleover FC in the Derbyshire Senior Cup.Carson then signed for Four straight defeats against play off challengers Buxton Brackley and Chester was followed up by a shattering capitulation against Relegation strugglers Needham Market After an uneventful first half Lewis Salmon gave the Reds the lead just before the hour after he converted from close range after Jed Abbey`s initial effort had been well saved by Market men goalkeeper Josh Blunkell Salmon soon had his second of the game and third of the season on 66 minutes as he scored with close quarters to make it 2-0 The visitors rung the changes with 15 minutes to go Reggie Lambe came on hit the frame of the goal and less than a minute later reduced their arrears through through Tommy Smith Alfreton have a great opportunity to seal the game when sub Gerry mcDonagh found Jed Abbey but he was denied by a wonderful save To add insult to injury a leveller from Liam Cross was followed by a winner from Reggie Lambe as Alfreton crashed to a home defeat which extended the run of consecutive defeats to five This is the first time Alfreton have lost five games in a row since November 2019 to December 2019 The Reds havent lost six in a row since March to April 2017 under the management of Russ O Neil Billy Heath`s men will be looking to avoid equaling that run against Leamington The two sides are 21st (Alfreton) and 19th (Leamington) in the form guide over the last 10 matches Ofton have a strong recent record against the Brakes unbeaten in their last six meetings and will be hopefully of extending that run tomorrow night Leamington are managed by the one manager who has been in post longer programme with the visit of Derbyshire rivals Buxton Its a swift renewal of hostilities against the Bucks after the recent Derbyshire Senior Cup Final success that the Reds enjoyed less than a week ago Billy Heath`s started their East bank Holiday double header with a 0-0 draw at another play off hopeful in Curzon Ashton which dented the hopes of the Nash The result saw Buxton leapfrog the Nash in to the final play off place with just two games to go after a hard fought and impressive 1-0 win over Chorley on Good Friday Alfreton head in to the game have stabilized themselves comfortably in mid table after a really poor dip in form earlier in the campaign Billy Heath`s side sit 14th and could finish as high as 13th come the end of the season on Saturday should other results go their way The unbeaten run now sits at six matches and its just one defeat for Ofton in their last nine outings in all competitions The Reds will be eager to finish a mixed campaign on a high at home and in the process derail the Buxton play off bid There are no new injury concerns for Billy Heath who handed a debut from the bench to Canadian Striker Jeremy Opong on Good Friday Opong put in an impressive showing with some good touches including setting up a late shooting opportunity for Liam Waldock after chasing a lost cause four minutes from the end of the match There are just three points between fifth and ninth in the play off race ahead of Matchday 45 while Kidderminster and Brackley are locked together on 86 points with two games to play Kiddy lead the league thanks to their superior goal difference but face a tricky examination bitter rivals and play off challengers Hereford FC Tickets can be purchased here - https://ticketpass.org/event/EWPVWH/alfreton-town-fc-v-buxton-2Parking at the Impact Arena is incredibly limited Its been a difficult and tricky time for the Reds who have now lost 10 of their last 12 league games This damaging run has seen Billy Heath`s men crash to 16th in the league table following the latest setback in midweek away at South Shields. With 13 games to go in this season Alfreton despite their lowly position still have a 11 point buffer on Needham Market in the final relegation position The Reds will be under no illusion at the importance of picking up a positive result in this game against the visitors who languish in 22nd and are 11 games without a win dating back to December 2024 As we enter March the upcoming fixtures after this clash against Brackley and Scunthorpe who are both vying for the title alongside Chester look to be a tough challenge for an out of form Ofton outfit so this game takes on an added significance One of the positives of recent weeks however despite Alfreton`s on pitch struggles has been the form of Ofton number 11 Lewis Salmon A goal in the second half on Tuesday night at South Shields made it seven goals in his last 11 appearances for Salmon which took his season tally to 10.Despite another defeat on Tuesday night at South Shields which made it four losses in succession this latest reversal was not without encouraging signs Despite falling behind to a bit of quality from league top scorer Paul Blackett and a second from Kyle Crossley the Reds demonstrated fight determination and desire in the second half and were perhaps unlucky not to get something from the game Saturday`s opponents Warrington have endured a troubled and difficult campaign so far The Yellows have struggled all campaign and have only won 5 games all season Tickets can be purchased here - https://ticketpass.org/event/EDGUZB/alfreton-town-fc-v-warrington-town Before renewing hostilities with the Bucks on Easter Monday the Reds had the opportunity to dent another teams play off hopes in Curzon who came in to the contest sitting just outside the play off places.Manager Billy Heath ran the changes with no fewer than six alterations to the side that delivered Derbyshire Senior Cup Success in midweek against local rivals Buxton Jed Abbey and Akeel Francis were reinstated in to the starting eleven Canadian Duo Richard Lapointe and Jeremy Opong who have had to be patient for their opportunity were named together on the bench for the first time as well In front of a healthy crowd of 645 it was the Reds who made the brighter start to proceedings. After Sam Osborne had been felled on the edge of the area with just three minutes on the watch Jed Abbey stepped to strike the dead ball with authority and was unfortunate to see his effort cannon off the upright to safety Isaac Buckley-Ricketts who put in an impressive performance for the hosts and was a menace all afternoon cut inside Josh Clackstone on 11 minutes and fired just over the bar.Alfreton continued gamely in the early stages and after referee Charles Martland had played an advantage Jed Abbey who had started brightly for Billy Heath`s men cut inside his man from the right before shooting off target Minutes later Isaac Buckley-Ricketts was once again the source of danger as he fired narrowly wide of the goal from the edge of the box.Issac Sinclair hit an effort which rose over the bar just before the half hour before it was Alfreton who fashioned the next opening With ten minutes of the second half to play Jed Abbey`s right wing cross was blocked then a follow up with top goalscorer Liam Waldock was also blocked by the Nash defence.Alfreton won their first corner kick on 36 minutes which in turn lead to Jed Abbey firing a shot just wide of Bobby Jones` goal from 20 yards Both sides went in to the break locked at 0-0 after a competitive first half On 48 minutes the dangerous Isaac Buckley Ricketts engineered some space and flashed a teasing cross in to the area which evaded everyone in the area who couldn't apply a telling touch Curzon captain Jimmy Spencer exhibited really good control under pressure before shooting over the bar from around 15 yards out on 50 minutes enjoying several good touches and almost producing a good through ball for Jed Abbey Real clear cut chances were scarce for both teams during the contest.Isaac Sinclair struck a free kick straight at George Sykes Kenworthy in the Alfreton goal before the loanee had to be alert again on 78 to smother at the feet of the dangerous Isaac Buckley Ricketts Jeremy Opong showcased his solid debut as his good work on the right four minutes from time led to a shooting opportunity for Liam Waldock but the midfielder couldnt find the target as the game remained goalless until the conclusion of the game. The result saw Alfreton rise to 14th in the National League North as the unbeaten run was extended to 6 games in all comps Alfreton complete their home fixture programme on Easter Monday with a renewal of club. The Reds were riding high in the league at the time back in November but a run of just 2 wins in the last 11 in all competitions and more recently five straight leave defeats has seen Alfreton slip out of the promotion picture Indeed the Reds have not lost six games in succession for nearly eight years (March to April 2017) After the visit of Leamington to the Impact Arena was postponed on Tuesday Alfreton`s last outing was a disappointing defeat to bottom of the table Needham Market on Saturday Two goals from the visitors in added time at the end of the game overturned the game after an Lewis Salmon brace had given the Reds a commanding 2-0 lead against the Marketmen.Just four points separate the bottom six now in National League North in a tight and congested relegation battle Alfreton are yet to pick up a single point in an arduous January so far and boss Billy Heath will be eager to halt the poor run as soon as possible to stop the reds being dragged further down the table Farsley Celtic have had well documented issues with the pitch at Thostle Nest all season After their manager and several first team players due to the ongoing issues behind the scenes the Celts have signed a groundshare agreement with Buxton for their remaining home fixtures this season Farsley recently dropped in to the bottom four after a run of five games without a win and with Alfreton rock bottom of the form guide its certainly a clash of two teams out of form on Friday Despite this the game presents a good opportunity for the Reds to steady the ship somewhat in the league ahead of a number of long away trips at Scarborough Spennymoor Hereford and South Shields in February Farsley recently announced the appointment of former Leeds,Rotherham and Scarborough manager Neil Redfearn edging past Leamington FC with a 1-0 victory at the Impact Arena Liam Waldock’s 12th goal of the season in the 78th minute proved to be the difference in a game that saw the Reds create the better chances which all but secured Alfreton’s status in the National League North. The Reds made one change from their 2-0 defeat at Chorley Leamington made five changes from their 2-0 win over South Shields on Saturday Jiah Medrano and Anthony Lynn all coming into the starting XI.Leamington got the action underway The first big moment came from on-loan keeper George Sykes-Kenworthy who produced a flying save to deny a long-range effort A free-kick that led to the game’s first booking for Ewan Williams on 13 minutes also brought a handball appeal inside the box Leamington’s best first-half opportunity came from a low delivery that flashed across the face of goal Hawkins produced an acrobatic save from a header following another Lund throw The resulting corner was cleared.Dan Meredith received treatment for a head injury and briefly returned but was soon replaced by Owen Farmer in the game's first change Alfreton continued to apply pressure through a series of corners Reds captain Dwayne Wiley picked up a booking for a foul near the centre circle. The last action of the half saw Alfreton earn another corner which was headed away after a second attempt Alfreton resumed without changes and had the first real chance They continued to threaten and had another penalty appeal turned down for handball Leamington responded with two efforts—German blocked one and the second was a comfortable catch for Sykes-Kenworthy Referee Jones spoke to both captains before Alfreton’s third corner for conduct on a box; the resulting corner was pulled back for a foul.A long-range free-kick from Jake Day drew a routine stop from Hawkins.Jed Abbey made way for Lewis Salmon before Anthony Lynn saw yellow for an elbow on Lund as the visitors made their third and final change Joseph Clark replaced Lynn. The game winning moment came on 78 minutes as Waldock slotted in from close range for his 12th of the season taking him to out right top goalscorer for the Reds after Hawkins failed to catch the ball.Jack Edwards was booked for confronting the assistant referee over the goal and was soon replaced by Matthew Richards Jake Day had a final penalty appeal denied before being replaced by Gerry McDonagh and Sykes-Kenworthy made a vital stop late on.As the final whistle blew The result marked Alfreton’s first victory in three months at home and moved them one step closer to safety in the National League North Next up for the Reds is a trip to face Marine.Reds: Sykes-Kenworthy Osborne has put pen to paper with the Reds until the end of the 2025/26 season 26 will be no stranger to an avid follower of the National League North having represented Leamington AFC Fylde and Derbyshire rivals Buxton with distinction in the divisionOsborne started his football journey at Dunkirk before he enjoyed a four year stint at Notts County While at the Magpies Osborne won 2 player of the month awards but had to be patient for consistent first team opportunities Following Notts County`s relegation to the National League Osborne became more of a regular scoring his first goal for the club against Boreham Wood which won goal of the month.Despite being offered a new contract at Meadow Lane Osborne elected to look for first time opportunities elsewhere Osborne then signed for National League North club Leamington scoring his two goals for his new employers against the Reds on a evening to forget for Billy Heath`s side during the behind closed doors season of 2020/21 on a night when current Ofton fans favourite Jake Day was on target for Alfreton In January 2022 promotion chasing AFC Fylde swooped for Osborne`s signature for an undisclosed fee Osborne once again won a player of the month award and helped AFC Fylde secure a place in the top three.Osborne increased his National League North experience further with a fruitful spell at local rivals Buxton where he scored 12 goals in 41 appearances. Most recently Osborne has been plying his trade at newly promoted Boston United who had defeated the Reds in last years play off competition While Boston has struggled in the league above Osborne has scored 5 goals in 26 appearances in a struggling side Following the sacking of Ian Culverhouse in October Osborne had found opportunities more infrequent under new boss Graham Coughlan Please extend a huge Ofton welcome to Sam Reds this time conceding twice in additional time in a 3-2 loss to the leagues bottom side Needham Market Billy Heath made one change with goalkeeper David Robson returning to the side New signing David Solademi given his first league start and Kidderminster loanee Kobe Hall made the bench Needham Market had the better of the open exchanges David Robson was forced into the first save of the afternoon when he tipped over Adam Mills’ free-kick Mills later latched onto Tommy Smith’s free-kick but his effort was tame and gathered this time by Robson Alfreton`s first opportunity fell to Jed Abbey following a trademark Adam Lund throw into the box but his header was weak and was caught by Josh Blunkell Midway through the first period Alfreton started to pile the pressure onto the visitors box Thee consecutive corners from Liam Waldock caused mayhem before Abbey’s goal bound effort was headed clear Luke Ingram Despite Needham having the majority of the play in the reminder of the first half it was Jed Abbey's 41st minute free-kick that came closest to breaking the deadlock but Blunkell brilliantly saved down to his left and the half ended goalless despite both teams having chances Kobe Hall was introduced during the break for his first appearance Needham started the second period the better Ben Hunter’s quick free-kick found Ingram inside the box but Robson was equal to his for his first time shot it was Alfreton that broke the deadlock on 59 minutes Nathan Newall’s cross saw Jed Abbey's initial close range saved but he picked up the rebound and squared to Lewis Salmon who poked in The goal Alfreton gave confidence they haven not enjoyed recently and we saw a more familiar performance for the following period of the game and just seven minutes later Salmon again converted another cross from the left for his second of the game Needham made the reminder of the substitutions and it was just minutes later they started to come to fruition when Reggie Lambe had a long range effort smash off the post Needham halved the deficit a minute later with the first of three brilliantly taken goals Tommy Smith controlling the ball superbly on the left side of the box prior to wrapping a superb strike into the top far corner leaving Robson helpless Needham came close to an equaliser when Dye was played down the right wing and his initial cross was blocked leaving the ball languishing around the penalty spot unattended but the first player to react was Max Hunt who gratefully cleared away Alfreton had the best chance to seal the game on 89 minutes when McDonagh who had replaced substitute Kobe Hall played through Jed Abbey but his effort was poor and Brunkell saved easily to keep his side in the game Needham made Alfreton just as we concluded regular time when substitutes Jacob Lay and Liam Cross combined well before Farmer's cross from the left was glanced home by Cross into the far corner The feeling was devastating for Alfreton but it was to get worse just two minutes later Reggie Lambe who had already hit the woodwork since coming on spotting Robson off his line from around 35-yards and clipped it into the roof of the net The game was frantic for the remaining few minutes but Needham held on and secured only their fifth victory of the season one which takes them off the foot of the table Alfreton are now enduring a period of five consecutive league losses Despite Alfreton Marine came into the game the in-form team of the league after winning eight of the last ten and all but confirming safety for themselves Alfreton came into the game in relatively good form themselves having lost only one of the last four Billy Heath made two changes from Tuesday night's win versus Leamington George Cantrill and David Solademi returned to the starting eleven in place Liam Waldock who dropped to the bench and captain Dwayne Wiley who was unable to feature at all After a delay due to an issue with one of the goal nets at the Marine Travel Arena It was the hosts that had the games first chance after a half clearance from George Sykes-Kenworthy was collected by Marine and spread wide to Finlay Sinclair-Smith who cut in from the right before driving his shot wide of the mark apart from some half hearted shouts for a Alfreton penalty for handball it was a very slow start to the match Jed Abbey curled the ball in a strike which looked goal-bound but only for a superb Max Metcalfe save some smart work between Sam Osborne and Owen German saw the ball crossed expertly to Jed Abbey but he could only head wide That chance sparked some hope that there might be some more action before the end of the half but between some poor quality from both sides there was plenty of questionable fouls awards meaning the fans saw a less than entertaining stop-start first period end goalless The game got back underway without ether side making a change but Alfreton introduced Gerry McDonagh after 51 minutes when Jake Day was booked by referee Darren Rogers for a high boot German had the first chance of the second half but the shot was snatched at as it ran away from the Altrincham loanee and was far from troubling Metcalfe Marine came close to opening the scoring when Bailey Sloane's free-kick grazed the top of the bar following a Nathan Newall foul Alfreton earned themselves a corner after eighty-five minutes when Jed Abbey's cross was blocked by Marine The home side won the first contact and the clearance flicked off German and out to safety The game petered out and Alfreton left with a point as the first side to keep a clean sheet at Marine since 12th November Following Needham Market`s loss versus Buxton it was a point that secured Marine's safety and nudged Alfreton closer to the mark themselves Attendance: 1516Picture thanks to Bill Wheatcroft Match highlights from the Deva as the Blues make it three wins in a row and move up to third with victory over Alfreton Town Ahead of the game Alfreton are 16th in National League North on 44 points 11 points clear of Needham Market who occupy a relegation position Saturday`s opposition Oxford City who have become the first team to compete in National League South National League and then National League North in consecutive seasons. However the Oxfordshire side have found it difficult to adapt to the rigours of the National League North this season Previous Hoops manager Ross Jenkins had a short unsuccessful spell with National League South outfit Boreham Wood before rejoining Oxford earlier this season. However his arrival has not coincided with an improvement of fortunes for Oxford City A run of 1 win in 13 and no wins in the last seven has seen the Oxford City side tethering just one place and two points ahead of Needham Market with two games in hand on the Suffolk side While Alfreton are in the middle of a trio of home games Oxford City showed promise by battling well to a couple of goalless draws with promotion challengers Chester and Scunthorpe United All the promise of those results was spectacularly undone when Oxford crashed to a heavy 7-0 home loss to Derbyshire rivals Buxton who Alfreton are set to meet next month in the Derbyshire County Cup Final at Chesterfield All seven goals were conceded in just 35 playing minutes with Billy Heath`s men looking to capitalize on the weaknesses in the Oxford City.A win for the Reds will see they take a giant leap to secure another season of Step 2 football in DE55 Its certainly a game against two out of form sides Both teams are winless in seven league games While Alfreton head in to the contest on the back of a pair of 2-0 defeats to the top two sides in the league in Brackley Town and Scunthorpe United there were several positives to take from both matches.Ofton held Brackley for 75 minutes and arguably shaded the first half against the perennial promotion challengers Billy Heath`s followed that up with probably their best home performance of the calendar year They was a lot to like as Alfreton gave as good as they got against their full time opponents but unfortunately ran in to an inspired save from Ross Fitzsimmons in the Iron goal.Jake Day who has recently returned from injury had his best performance for some time but failed to capitalize on a couple of gilt edged chances The Reds will be hoping to reach the same level of performance on Saturday Tickets can be purchased here - https://ticketpass.org/event/EPSWTN/alfreton-town-fc-v-oxford-city The Reds were out of action in midweek following the postponement of their home game with Darlington. The Reds dropped to 12th place after the midweek action thats 8 points adrift of Harriers who currently occupy the final play off berth in seventh place.Given the position of the opposition Saturday provides a good opportunity for Alfreton to start their late bid to finish in the top seven However Reds boss Billy Heath will be aware that Alfreton`s home form will need to improve with Ofton tasting victory in just two of their last eight in DE55 and none so far in 2025 managed by former Premier League boss Phil Brown arrived in Derbyshire in poor form - a run of four games without a win has seen Harriers lose ground on the automatic promotion race Last time out saw the Worcestershire side pick up a decent point away at Chester who have been the form horse of the division in recent weeks which has seen the seals hit the summit Alfreton Town have bolstered a squad short on numbers with the loan signing of highly rated midfielder Owen German from National League side Altrincham who will be available for selection.Fellow loanee Kobe Hall will not be available to play against his parent club however Ofton will go in search of a notable league double over Harriers after a hard fought 1-0 away back secured thanks to an Alex Penny own goal Alfreton have a decent record against their opponents with just albeit noticeable defeat in the least four that being a play off eliminator at the end of the 2023/24 season as Harriers went on to win the play offs and promotion to the National League Tickets can be purchased here - game at Alfreton has been postponed because of a waterlogged pitch No new date has been set for the re-arranged game slipping to their third successive defeat in the process With keeper George Willis out injured long-term manager Billy Heath secured the signature of former Rochdale stopper David Robson in time to play but it was his opposite number Jonny Maxted who drew the headlines In the tenth minute the Brackley keeper failed to prevent a back header from going behind and then managed to fumble Billy Whitehouse's subsequent flag-kick over the line to give the Reds the lead Then after the visitors had uncompromisingly taken the game by the scruff of the neck with three goals blew a fuse on the stroke of half-time bringing down Liam Waldock in full flight on the edge of the area The referee had little choice but to brandish red George Carline took over between the sticks Having given the Saints a 2-1 lead on 25 minutes with a simple conversion of a right-flank cross Carline's first job was to pick the ball out of the back of the net after Jed Abbey had duly despatched the free-kick Alfreton had led for just seven minutes when Alfie Bates slammed home a loose ball and Connor Hall had made the score 3-1 to Brackley after 32 minutes with a header from a Matt Lowe cross Spurred on by the turn of events the Reds were quickly out of the blocks after the interval and by the 48th minute a long throw by Adam Lund had caused enough confusion for Max Hunt to grab an equalising header and from that point there was hope in the air Try as they might though the hosts met Northamptonshire resistance Jake Day and sub Lewis Salmon before Brackley delivered the sucker punch in the shadows of added time with Lowe sparking wild celebrations on the visiting bench when he slid home a right-wing cross rather too easily The victory ended a run of five straight National League North defeats and in truth never looked in doubt against a young and inexperienced Farsley Celtic outfit as Ofton lifted themselves to 11th in the league standings The Reds looked strong and purposeful from the start as logged to impose themselves on the Celts who have had well documented issues with the pitch at their Citadel home which means they are playing home games currently at Buxton With just six minutes on the watch the Reds hit the front Jake Day flicked on a long ball to the onrushing Lewis Salmon down the flank and put the ball on a plate for waldock to notch his first league goal since November.Farsley reacted well to falling behind as Joao Silva showed good feet to skip past a trio of challenges before firing a low shot wide from the edge of the box A neat corner routine on 12 minutes led the ball being cut back to the edge of the box for Jed Abbey to strike from the edge of the box with lewis Salmon alomost getting a telling touch on the effort at the back post Salmon looked to have been caught in the area by the keeper just before th half hour while Abbey cracked a ferocious shot against the bar on 32 as the Reds laid siege to the Farsley goal Ofton finally got the second goal their domination had warranted when Jake Day took his season tally to seven as headed home a Adam Lund long throw Alfreton helped themselves to a third before the half time interval as jake Day lobbed the goalkeeper before a Farsley defender blocked on the line before Liam Waldock bundled the ball in to the next for his second of the game to take his season tally to 10 Alfreton made it 4-0 on 64 minutes as Lewis Salmon who had been impressive all evening got in the act as he find the net after another Adam Lunnd long throw had been flicked on by David Solademi Farsley continued to battle gamely and grabbed a consolation on 66 as Joao Silva embarked on a lovely run before switching the ball on to his other foot and slotting the ball smartly past Robson Alfreton were denied a stonewall late penalty on 83 minutes when Jake Day looked to be unceremoniously fouled in the area.Late Substitute Kobe Hall struck the outside of the post with a superb dead ball freekick in the final seconds of the game as Alfreton finished the game strongly. The win was the first time Alfreton had scored 4 on a artificial pitch and won by a 3 goal margin on the surface.Next up is the visit of out of form Southport to the Impact Arena on Tuesday night Full time Farsley Celtic 1-4 Alfreton Town home of Chesterfield FC when the Reds set to lock horns with National League North rivals Buxton FC The occasion will be Alfreton`s second final in the Derbyshire FA Senior Challenge Cup under the management of Billy Heath`s The previous appearance was in Heath`s first season in charge 2018/19 against Mickleover Sports with the Reds prevailing by a 2-1 scoreline at Pride Park in front of a crowd of 401 In total Alfreton have won 10 Derbyshire FA Senior Challenge Cups in their history The first was in 1960/61 and the most recent was in 2018/19 Their opponents Buxton have been dominant in recent years winning both editions of the competition since the return from the COVID 19 Pandemic A 2-1 win over Derby County Under 23s at Pride Park was followed up by a commanding 5-0 victory over Heanor Town at the same venue last year Buxton have now won the competition 12 times the most of any club. The two teams last met in the Third Round of the 2018/19 edition with Alfreton winning 2-1 on the way to lifting the trophy Indeed Alfreton are yet to concede a goal in this years competition and will be looking to end a difficult second half of the season with inspection at 2pm this afternoon A look ahead to Saturday’s game at Alfreton… By Matty Paddock - 14/02/2025 HARRIERS travel to Alfreton in National League North action on Saturday Fresh from a useful point on the road at league leaders Chester in midweek Harriers will look for more success on their travels with a trip to the Impact Arena Saturday’s tie will be the 24th meeting of these two sides dating back to 2011 since which time they’ve met regularly – most recently the return game earlier this season which Billy Heath’s side won 1-0 Our last trip to the Impact Arena was in our 2023 play-off campaign when a narrow victory set the boys on their way to promotion in the end-of-season lottery Heath’s charges remain a tough nut to rack A five match losing streak over the New Year is as tough a run as they’ve endured this term evidenced by the fact it came after a run of one defeat in seven in National League North and before a thumping 4-1 victory over Farsley Celtic they ventured to Scarborough Athletic and came away with a tremendous 2-0 victory to set them up nicely for the weekend encounter with Phil Brown’s men Harriers will be without long-term injured quartet Alex Penny Watch Brown’s full pre-match interview to preview the game including an update on those injuries below: Kick off at Alfreton on Saturday is is at 3:00pm Away travel is available from Harriers up to and including Friday afternoon Despite Ilkeston operating one level below the Reds in the Northern Premier League Premier League Premier Division the Robins have been an enjoying a splendid season sitting fourth in the table with 45 points from 26 games played Striker Tom Curson`s will be one to watch on the night with the striker having scored an impressive 21 league goals which has attracted interest in his services from higher clubs The two sides late met two years ago in this competition when the Reds claimed a commanding 6-1 at the Impact Arena thanks to a brace year of 2025 with a slender 1-0 home defeat to top of the table Curzon Ashton After a trademark hard working performance it was another controversial refereeing decision that proved the difference between the sides.George Willis celebrated his 200th appearance in Alfreton Red but it soon became a struggle for the shot stopper after he picked up an injury in the first Ever a battler Willis showed extraordinary bravery to continue to play when clearly injured including a few excellent saves considering his ailment Tickets can be purchased here - https://ticketpass.org/event/EQZNFN/alfreton-town-fc-v-darlington-2 Neither team has much to play for ahead of the game Peterborough Sports have had a very solid season which has seen they post their record National League North points tally with four games to play Despite a slow start which had the Turbines hovering near the relegation zone under the management of Michael Gash and Luke Steele a big improvement in results has seen the Cambridgeshire side lie in a comfortable 12th place in midtable in National League North The relegation issue could be sealed before the Easter Double header next week Warrington and Farsley have already been relegated and the two teams who currently occupy the other two relegation places Rushall Olympic and Needham Market lorck horns in Suffollk However a win for Radcliffe against Leamington would relegate both regardless of the result between the pair The Reds head in to the game with just one defeat in their last six in the league as the Players begin to turn their attentions to the close season and playing for a new contract for season 2025/26 While this is Ofton`s sixth overall meeting with Peterborough Sports its actually the first meeting on a Saturday between the sides. The reverse game back in November saw Alfreton fall victim to a defeat after a very late hat trick from substitute Michael Gyasi see Sports overturn a 1-0 deficit to claim three points despite an opener from Jake Day on the night.A win for the Reds could see Billy Heath`s men be as high as 14th come five o`clock Tickets can be purchased here - https://ticketpass.org/event/EEDGFK/alfreton-town-fc-v-peterborough-sports-2 After a poor run of form of late which saw the Reds suffer 6 defeats in 7 games Billy Heath men would have been buoyed by a commanding 2-0 win away at Scarborough on Saturday in their last league outing Indeed the win made it back to back away wins for Ofton after a recently comfortable 4-1 win over crisis hit Farsley Celtic An early goal from Lewis Salmon which took his season tally to eight set Alfreton on their way against the Seadogs of Scarborough Alfreton defended with really authority with goalkeeper Jake Askew newly added to the side rarely tested other than a long distance shot which he saved superbly just before half time Adam Anson`s scored his second goal of the season in the second half to seal the victory which took Alfreton back up to 11th in the table seven points adrift of Curzon Ashton in the final play off place Alfreton will be eager to improve their home form as soon as possible. After having one of the best records in the league a run of 2 wins in 8 and more recently 4 straight defeats has seen the Impact lose its label as a fortress Consecutive home games against Darlington and Kidderminster will be far from easy to end that run however A run of just two defeats in the last 15 games for Steve Watson`s Quakers has seen Darlo recover from a sluggish start to well in the play off picture in 10th place One place and three points above Ofton.Indeed a win for Alfreton by a two goal margin or more will see the Reds leap frog their opponents in the league table Darlington come in to the game on the back of a 3-1 home win over Marine secured thanks to a brace of Cedric Main penalties Alfreton are still awaiting their first home win over Darlington in National League North at the 9th attempt So arguably their could be no better occasion than this with the Cameras watching to record a first home win of 2025
