Students from Alton College travelled to York to take part in the UK CanSat Competition final.
The contest provided the students with a chance to have practical experience of working on a small-scale space project.
They had to design and build a simulation of a real satellite within the volume and shape of a soft drink can.
The challenge for the students was to fit all the major subsystems found in a satellite, such as power, sensors and a communication system, into this minimal volume.
Alton College’s CanSat was launched on a small rocket and returned to Earth using a parachute designed by the students.
Their primary mission was to measure air pressure and air temperature during the CanSat's descent, with data being transmitted to their ground station, and they also had to design a secondary mission of their choosing to fit the CanSat’s capabilities. The winners will be announced soon.
Alton College’s progress in the competition was an early success for its Space and Satellite Hub which opened last October.
Academically this comprises A-level mathematics and physics plus the extended certificate in engineering, but the programme also has links with the UK space industry.
There is a week-long visit to the Surrey Space Centre to study a level four programme in space engineering, introducing students to mission design, orbits, launching and tracking.
Recently Alton College hosted the National Space Academy for a masterclass on space technology for students on the programme, which included the chance to handle rocks from the Moon and Mars, and to design, build and launch miniature rockets.
One student said: “I really hope we can do something similar again one day, I absolutely loved the experience.”

has been placed under formal intervention by the Department for Education following “serious cashflow pressures” and an ‘inadequate’ financial health rating
The Department for Education sent the Further Education Commissioner’s team to HSDC on May 1 after issuing a Financial Notice to Improve to the college on April 8
It said this was because of “serious cashflow pressures” at the college and a financial health grade of ‘inadequate’ for the financial year ending in July 2024
deputy director of the Department for Education’s London
South East and East Anglia place based team
said: “This means that HSDC is now placed into formal intervention
“We do not want colleges to remain in intervention for longer than is necessary and will assess when HSDC has made the necessary progress for this notice to improve to be lifted
“The college has already engaged with the Further Education Commissioner and her team
who have started a curriculum efficiency and financial sustainability support process and carried out a full health check.”
This development follows news about redundancies and course cuts across Alton, South Downs and Havant colleges to save HSDC £5 million in 2025-26 which was revealed in the Herald last week.
The principal and chief executive of HSDC is Mike Gaston. A full member of the board and chief accounting officer, he got the job in April 2015, four months after agreeing to step down as principal of Totton College near Southampton as it plunged into a similar financial crisis.
A series of damning financial reports on Totton College culminated in one in December 2014 in which sixth form commissioner Peter Mucklow said: “The college faces an immediate crisis in its cash position, which is worse than that predicted in the spring of 2014.”
Totton College’s fate was to be bought by national crime reduction charity Nacro in December 2015.
One Alton parent said: “Alton College was in the top ten in the country. Since the merger it has gone downhill. Most students want to go to Peter Symonds in Winchester nowadays. A high percentage of my son's year went there.”

The Toxicator closed for about an hour on its first day after a burst pipe flooded the area nearby with sewage
A toxic waste-themed ride at Alton Towers had to be temporarily closed on its opening day – after a burst pipe flooded the nearby area with sewage
was shut for about an hour on Saturday after the area nearby was evacuated
Alton Towers opened from 10am on Saturday for its 2025 season
staying open until 8pm for Alton After Dark
Plans for the new ride were announced in January
prompting fans to travel to the Staffordshire park
eager to be among the first to ride the attraction
View image in fullscreenThe Toxicator ride in action. Photograph: Alton TowersSome queued for more than an hour for the Toxicator, which promises “a fearsome battleground of otherworldly aliens, suspicious scientific experiments and military might”.
The ride takes thrillseekers past themed props, including barrels of “toxic waste”. Black and yellow branding outside the attraction warns of an “overhead splash hazard”.
It stands higher than 78ft tall and can carry upwards of 500 riders an hour. It is the only “top spin” ride in the world that is elevated above ground level, meaning spectators can watch from below.

with one writing: “Alton Towers just had a toxic event when their new toxicator ride started spraying raw sewage on to people in the queue.”
“Bit too literal on the ‘toxic substance,” another said
while a third wrote the Toxicator was “giving off something extra toxic”
Some said they had seen a brown liquid at the entrance of the ride
sharing pictures and videos on social media showing a grid flooded with murky water
“I know it’s called Toxicator but come on,” one person wrote
“The drains have burst and there’s [poo emoji] everywhere.”
Free daily newsletterOur morning email breaks down the key stories of the day
telling you what’s happening and why it matters
Surely Alton Towers could have kept it running claiming it’s a special toxic experience today?” Another person joked on X: “Stopped the complaints completely!!”
A spokesperson for the park told the Manchester Evening News that the issue was down to a burst pipe
and that “people were allowed back on in less than an hour”
some were quick to praise the theme park’s staff for dealing with the incident quickly
with one person writing: “Honestly though well done getting it cleaned up and reopened for late night riding.”
A spokesperson for Alton Towers said: “Due to an unexpected burst pipe near the ride
Toxicator briefly paused operation while our teams swiftly dealt with the issue
The ride and surrounding area are now fully reopened and welcoming guests.”
the moment in 1945 when the Second World War in Europe came to an end
Across the country we will pause to remember the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those who fought to secure our freedom
this solemn anniversary is being marked with a ‘Turning of the Page’ ceremony
where the names of the fallen are revealed in the Books of Remembrance
led by the Royal British Legion at Westminster Abbey
will also honour the heroes of both world wars
In Alton, a guided tour of the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery will provide insight into the lives of local servicemen laid to rest there. Among them is Sergeant Ronald Burgess, who died at just 22 during a daytime sortie in his Halifax III. According to records, while flying low after take-off, as was standard procedure, the aircraft’s wing clipped the sea, causing it to break apart. His sacrifice formed part of Operation Goodwood in July 1944.
VE Day is not only a moment to reflect on the immense human cost of war, but also to consider what has followed. The Second World War gave way to the Cold War, with the former allies, US and USSR, becoming ideological adversaries. Gorbachev’s Glasnost reforms and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 were defining moments that reshaped global relations.
But the hoped-for ‘peace dividend’ that followed has, sadly, proved short-lived. Recent years have seen growing instability, with renewed conflict in the Middle East, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, and a shifting stance from the United States prompting Europe to reassess its defence posture.
Yet despite these challenges, we remain profoundly grateful that global war on the scale of the 20th century has not returned. NATO has been fundamental in this, and it remains so. As we honour the courage of those who served and fell, we must also recommit ourselves to the cause of peace and freedom, so that their sacrifice is never forgotten, and never repeated.

Alton Towers has shared drone footage of the topspin ride
Alton Towers has announced an opening date for its Toxicator topspin ride
and released drone footage of the new attraction
Toxicator is the highest topspin ride of its kind
towering at 78-foot-high due to its 16-foot elevated platform
“We’re excited to be giving fans a flavour of the truly ‘spincredible’ power of Toxicator,” said Bianca Sammut, vice president of Alton Towers Resort
“From the 15 March those brave enough to submit to the spin will be able to experience the latest that Forbidden Valley has to offer.”
Via a press release, the drone footage shows off Toxicator‘s intense spin patterns and centrifugal forces
Located in Forbidden Valley, the new ride is flanked by the Nemesis Reborn coaster, which opened last year after an 18-month transformation to replace its 250-tonne
Toxicator is the next chapter in the Nemesis and Forbidden Valley story and is described as new technology by the Phalanx – the secret (and fictional) organisation tasked with controlling the Nemesis beast
During the experience
riders are flipped around and held face down above a bubbling pool of toxic alien acid as water fountains shoot up around the attraction
These represent the chemical solution formed from the Nemesis beast’s saliva
“The extreme centrifugal forces are designed to extract and refine toxic saliva from the Nemesis beast
converting it into a chemical solution so powerful it can melt anything it touches,” Alton Towers said
originally opened as the Pirate Ship attraction in 1980.
Meanwhile, Alton Towers has submitted a planning application for a new junior coaster in its CBeebies Land

“So when Alton Towers invited me to be the first to take on the unrivalled spinning power of Toxicator I jumped at the chance
“Riding it is an incredible experience and will give riders an unrivalled sense of the intense power of spin.”
Bianca Sammut, vice president of Alton Towers
added: “Toxicator is the latest example of how Alton Towers continues to set new standards for heart-pounding attractions.”

The UK theme park said evaluating its lineup of attractions “is an ongoing process that occurs at the end of each theme park season
with continued reinvestment in our world-class rides and attractions always front and centre”
Also being retired is Flavio’s Fabulous Fandango
This was closed and reimagined to create a new Scarefest attraction earlier this year

but it’s time for its retirement,” said Mark Hambelton

Bianca Sammut
said the park “is renowned for consistently delivering new and reimagined thrills for our fans and as the UK’s only topspin ride
we’re excited to welcome Toxicator to the park”
She added: “We can’t wait to challenge thrillseekers to submit to the spin

Family coasters and brands are major attractions trends this year
Alton Towers has submitted a planning application for a new junior coaster in its CBeebies Land
The park, operated by Merlin Entertainments, confirmed the plans in statements on social media, writing: “If approved, this new attraction will be perfect for our youngest thrill-seekers and their families to enjoy together.”
The planning application is yet to be published by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, but Alton Towers said it will share more information in the future.

CBeebies Land is home to family-friendly rides and attractions inspired by brands like Hey Duggee
It’s possible that Alton Towers is looking to add a permanent Bluey attraction to its Cbeebies Land
which already offers a live experience with Bluey
The UK park is adding the new ride amid a growing trend for family coasters
Alton Towers is also making some changes in its Forbidden Valley area. The park’s oldest current ride, The Blade, was recently closed after 44 years to make room for a new attraction
Also being retired is Flavio’s Fabulous Fandango
The theme park said evaluating its lineup of attractions “is an ongoing process that occurs at the end of each theme park season
Nemesis Reborn opened earlier this year in the Forbidden Valley zone after an 18-month transformation
A top ten list of parking ticket hotspots in East Hampshire has been revealed – with roads in Petersfield taking up six of the places.
Hampshire County Council has confirmed their civil enforcement officers handed out 8,408 parking tickets around East Hampshire during the 2024/25 financial year.
That roughly equates to 23 tickets a day, with the vast majority being issued in Petersfield and Alton.
Town centre streets in Petersfield take up places two to six in the top ten list, with Lavant Street and The Square coming second and third, respectively.
St Peter’s Road, High Street and Swan Street take up places four to six, while Charles Street is number eight.
Two villages also feature in the top ten with Headley Road and Redhill Road in Grayshott and Rowlands Castle coming in seven and tenth, respectively, with Market Street in Alton sandwiched in-between.
And taking the top spot? That was High Street in Alton although HCC haven’t revealed the exact number of PCNs issued to motorists on the featured roads.
“Regarding visits by civil enforcement officers, we do not have specific figures for individual towns or villages,” said a spokesperson.
Responsibility for on-street parking enforcement changed hands from East Hampshire District Council to HCC in April 2023. The former still oversees enforcement in EHDC-run car parks like central car park in Petersfield and Ladyplace in Alton.
The Post & Herald also asked for figures for Liss as parish councillors continue to have gripes about ongoing illegal parking around the village centre and Hill Brow Road.
Councillor Andy Smith has urged more people to report parking infringements on the HCC website as the more received, the more likely wardens will visit.
Motorists frequently park in the disabled bay outside Tesco Express and on the double yellow lines on The Whistle Stop corner.

The Loungers chain of café-bars may be moving into the Alton High Street building formerly occupied by the M&Co clothes shop.
M&Co closed in April 2023. Now notices on the front window state that Loungers has applied to East Hampshire District Council for premises and pavement licences for the property.
Loungers could not say that this meant it was moving in - but the company dropped a hint that it might be.
Speaking to the Herald, a spokesperson said: “We are in advanced negotiations on a site in Alton – it’s a great area and we are hopeful to join the local community by opening a Lounge and creating between 30 and 40 new jobs. Nothing is totally confirmed yet, however.”
Loungers began in August 2002 - “on a Tuesday” - when friends Alex Reilley, Jake Bishop and Dave Reid opened their first Lounge in an empty opticians in North Street in the Bedminster district of Bristol.
They developed a policy of individualising the names of their Lounges. The first one opened outside of Bristol, at Oldfield Park in Bath in July 2007, was called the Velo Lounge because it occupied a former bicycle shop.
In Hampshire there is the Solento Lounge, in Lymington on The Solent, and just in case diners and drinkers are unsure what to do, the Portswood district of Southampton features the Trago Lounge - trago being the Portuguese translation of “swallow”.
Loungers opened its 250th site, the Pionero Lounge in Rochdale, in January 2024.
The spokesperson added: “For every Lounge we open, it’s important to us that we give back to the community – we partner with local charities to raise funds, our spaces are used for meetings of local groups and businesses, and we encourage customers to use us as a community hub.
“We hope to have more info on the site in Alton soon.”

Alton’s tourism will soon blossom thanks to a Regency-style garden in memory of world-renowned author Jane Austen.
created outside the Assembly Rooms on the High Street
was paid for in part by EHDC’s Rural Grants scheme
designing a Regency-inspired planting scheme including flowers mentioned in her books and charity rose varieties that are named after her and her home in Chawton.
designed to recall the wheels of a horse-drawn carriage
have also been installed to provide a dry and comfortable space for friends to meet and relax.
The garden received £46,705.36 from our Rural Grants fund last year
This year's window to apply for Rural Grant funding is open now and is due to close on Thursday 12 September.
EHDC’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Prosperity
said: “Our Rural Grants scheme is aimed at helping businesses and community groups make the area more attractive to visitors and improve the lives of local residents.
“This beautiful Regency garden is a perfect example of that
You can really imagine Jane Austen enjoying the flowers and plants and it’s situated on a High Street in Alton which she would have visited many times.
“It’s sure to bring in Austen fans from around the world as well as being a charming and relaxing spot for local people to visit.”
Local member for East Hampshire District Council
Cllr Annette Eyre met with members of the appropriately-attired Jane Austen Regency Week Committee to look around the garden
said: “We were delighted to be awarded the Rural Grant funding from EHDC which has made this new community garden project possible
It has turned a little-used piece of empty lawn into a real feature for the town centre
making it the new go-to place for picnicking and enjoying a takeaway coffee with friends
The garden is often used by the Dementia Friends Group from the Assembly Rooms next door to enable their member to get outside and partake in gentle exercise like boules and croquet
"The jewel in the crown of the new garden design will be the Jane Austen bronze sculpture that is currently being created by world-renowned artist Mark Coreth and will be made at the local Morris Singer Foundry in Lasham
The artwork will be the perfect present to the town to celebrate the 250th birthday of the world-famous 18th century novelist and we are really looking forward to its unveiling at Alton’s Regency Day on 21 June 2025.”
said: "This is already a very attractive part of Alton and the creation of the Regency-style garden makes a wonderful addition
"It makes for a very relaxing environment and the perfect place for people to get together for a lunchbreak or to sit in peace and enjoy the flowers
The Regency Garden was funded by the Rural Grants which seeks to improve local tourism and make stronger communities
Applications are now being submitted for this year's Rural Grants but will close on Thursday 12 September
The fund will be ideal for businesses and local groups with projects that offer attractions for visitors and tourists alongside tangible benefits to local residents

A restaurant and bar chain has confirmed its commitment to opening a branch in Alton amid suspicions interest has cooled in a town centre landmark.
Loungers were set to open a branch in the former NatWest at 38 High Street with East Hampshire District Council granting the firm a premises licence in September.
Scaffolding also went up around the same period but although notices are still in the windows, work has stopped and a ‘To Let’ sign has appeared.
The unit is being let through Trinity Rose but the Winchester agency has remained tight-lipped about the current status of the property with the involved person “being out of the office on annual leave”.
Loungers have confirmed they are looking at a site in Alton and hope to give more information soon, but their response to an enquiry by the Herald also makes no mention of the 38 High Street site.
The spokesperson said: “We are in advanced negotiations on a site in Alton.
“It’s a great area and we are hopeful to join the local community by opening a Lounge and creating between 30-40 new jobs.
“Nothing is totally confirmed yet, however, for every Lounge we open, it’s important to us that we give back to the community – we partner with local charities to raise funds, our spaces are used for meetings of local groups and businesses, and we encourage customers to use us as a community hub.

A official opening date has not been released
but the record-breaking Toxicator is set to make its debut ride in the spring
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
Alton Towers has revealed the name of its brand-new ride that will open in the spring of 2025 – and it is slated to be the highest topspin ride of its kind
Part of the ‘Nemesis’ universe at Alton Towers, the Staffordshire theme park has announced its latest ride will be named ‘Toxicator’
Toxicator is a topspin ride that can accommodate more than 500 people per hour
Rides will be seated back-to-back before being flipped round and held face down above a “bubbling pool of highly toxic alien acid”
Thrill-seeking park guests will be subjected to heart-pounding centrifugal forces from intense spin patterns
Toxicator will also be breaking a few boundaries
standing at a record-breaking 78ft high (set on a 16ft elevated platform)
The ride will become the only topspin ride in the world to be elevated above ground level
allowing spectators to watch the entire ride by walking underneath
It will also be the first of its kind in the UK
and one of only two double-sided versions in Europe
Toxicator will be situated in the Forbidden Valley next to the inverted rollercoaster Nemesis Reborn and will play a part in the fictional Nemesis story that gives the rides their theme
The Nemesis backstory tells a tale of a routine excavation that led to the discovery of Nemesis
was then mobilised to deal with the Nemesis but eventually started to lose its authority over the alien after some shady attempts at genetically mutating her offspring
Nemesis Reborn depicts guests as having entered the Forbidden Valley and encountered the fearsome and uncontrollable creature
that sends riders through intense inversions after The Phalanx lost strength
is themed around the newest technology from the shadowy organisation as they try to extract and separate toxic saliva from the Nemesis creature
The intestine spinning and centrifugal force of the ride relates to The Phalanx's attempts to “turn the saliva into a chemical solution so powerful it will melt anything it touches”
A new TV advert has been released this week
giving fans a first glance at the new experience coming to the park
said: “Alton Towers is renowned for consistently delivering new and reimagined thrills for our fans and as the UK’s only topspin ride
we’re excited to welcome Toxicator to the park
“We can’t wait to challenge thrillseekers to submit to the spin
“We’re not yet ready to reveal precisely when Toxicator will turn your world upside down
but rest assured the wait will be worth it.”
