Arbroath have been praised for a "remarkable" turnaround after sealing the Scottish League One title - and a return to the Championship at the first attempt - with a 4-0 win over third-top Stenhousemuir. A Sam Stanton double, plus goals from Fraser Taylor and Andy Winter, crowned promotion in style at Gayfield as the hosts stayed 11 points clear of Cove Rangers but now with only three games remaining. Relegated last season, Arbroath sacked manager Jim McIntyre after just three league games of the new campaign when they were bottom of the table. Midfielder David Gold and defender Colin Hamilton took interim charge before being appointed permanently in September and have overseen an impressive charge to the title. Arbroath chairman Ewen West told BBC Alba: "We didn't get a great start and there were a few challenges there. We changed the manager, we brought David and Colin in, which was a bit of a risk - never been in the management game before. Livingston consolidate second place with win at Morton Dunfermline move out of bottom two with win at Queen's Park Hamilton beat Partick to boost survival hopes "Changed the squad a wee bit and it has been remarkable since Christmas and went on a great run." The Red Lichties were still bottom of the table after seven games but are now nine league games unbeaten and have only lost three since the turn of the year. Co-manager Hamilton thought the turning point came in October. "We got beat 3-1 by Dumbarton here and me and David pulled the boys in and said we can go and win this league if we really want it," he said. "I think we were scared to say it before then, but it's the belief we have in the players. To end on a victory like that was excellent and makes it a bit more sweet." Midfielder Sam Stanton has been a big influence since arriving on loan from Raith Rovers in January and got the ball rolling against Stenhousemuir with a stunning strike on the turn. On-loan St Mirren midfielder Fraser Taylor fired low off a post from 18 yards after the break, Stanton met a cross from close range and forward Winter, another January loan arrival from Livingston, hammered in the fourth. Gold said: "The boys have been excellent in recent weeks and a score like that has been coming - it was just Stenhousemuir tonight." Stenhousemuir remain third but are now just one point ahead of Queen of the South and two clear of Alloa Athletic in the race for promotion play-off spots. It is phenomenal that Arbroath have bounced back right away. They were absolutely brilliant tonight - and it could have more with the opportunities towards the end. It was an onslought towards the Stenny goal. Some of the quality in their team was brilliant and they full deserve these celebrations. It's been amazing from the new management staff. They've brought in a number of new players since they've been involved - and what a turnaround. The last eight games have been so important. It is key that they keep the majority of this team, and add to it, when they return to the Championship. I'm not saying they can go and win it, but they can certainly be competitive. Natasha Smith, 37, allegedly assaulted Alun Harris-Richards at the superstore in Westway Retail Park, Arbroath, on June 30, 2024. Court papers state Smith behaved in an aggressive and threatening manner to Mr Harris-Richards. It is claimed Smith shouted, swore and uttered threats of violence towards him. Smith is then said to have struggled with him and repeatedly attempted to pull a bag from him. The charge goes on to say Smith repeatedly pushed Mr Harris-Richards on the body which caused him to strike a display stand. Mr Harris-Richards is said to have fallen to the ground and struck his head. On Tuesday, Smith pled not guilty to a charge of culpable homicide at the High Court in Glasgow. Solicitor advocate, Melissa Virtue, defending, told the hearing that footage from Mr Harris-Richards’ body camera would be shown to the jury. She said: “This shows strange breathing and the actions of those around him. “It is agreed that there will be a point in the footage which is played so that the jurors are not viewing the whole footage.” Smith also denied two further assault charges as well as a theft at the same time and place. Smith is claimed to have stolen a quantity of alcohol from the Asda. She is then said to have assaulted another employee by struggling with her and repeatedly attempting to pull a bag from her. Smith is stated to have pushed the female member of staff on the body. The other assault charge claims Smith attacked a third employee by repeatedly attempting to pull a bag from her. Smith is then stated to have seized the woman by the neck, punched her on the head and pulled her hair to her injury. The trial was set for January next year for Judge Lord Armstrong. It is expected to last seven days at the High Court in Edinburgh. was spotted by neighbours subjecting his victim to a violent attack on Strathairlie Avenue in Arbroath which continued even after the man fell unconscious The victim spent seven days in hospital before leaving against the advice of doctors who denied taking part in the concerted assault was traced on the same street and told police the injured man “pulled blades and knives.” He was found guilty by jurors who rejected his claim having been warned his conduct “would normally attract a custodial sentence.” After a three-day trial at Forfar Sheriff Court the jury of eight men and seven women convicted Gardiner They found that the he assaulted John Stuart by repeatedly punching and kicking him on the head and body and repeatedly stamping on his head Mr Stuart was taken from the scene to Ninewells by ambulance He arrived just before 10pm on August 23 2023 with a “reduced” level of consciousness He was found to have bruises and cuts to the back of his head bruising and abrasions of lessons after being told they were not “exciting” enough Education Scotland assessed two areas of the school –  leadership of change and learning teaching and assessment – to be “weak” following a visit in January 2024 One of the issues raised in last year’s report was that pupils were not being challenged in their learning causing a lack of excitement and stimulation Education Scotland said teachers have now benefitted from training to help get their students to “actively” engage in learning The latest report said: “Young people (are) learning independently working collaboratively with peers and making greater use of digital technology “Young people report an improvement in leading their own learning – they are able to influence what and how they learn.” Inspectors also said pupils are now feeling more motivated and benefitting from higher expectations and more appropriate challenges Education Scotland said it was pleased to see the school was showing “promising signs” in building a culture of ambition Some areas for improvement are still being worked on and Education Scotland said it will ask for a local authority report within a year Comments are currently disabled tomorrow’s match against Arbroath at Gayfield Park I’m looking forward to it and I have been like that for every match I’m always excited going into games because we have an exciting group of players that are willing to learn they’re keen and enthusiastic to do well and that’s all you can ask for.” but we know how hard a game it is going to be I think we’ve seen that anybody can beat anybody in this league Cove beat Arbroath last week but they’ve signed a few players in Stanton we played them earlier in the season and they beat us 2-0 up here We got a man sent off that day which didn’t help Hopefully we can go down there and give a good account of ourselves.” “We’ve done reasonably well away from home; we’re trying to make sure we get our home record really good as well I think if we can mix up our wins home and away that would be ideal.” “No matter what league been we’ve played in against Arbroath and no matter what team goes there I think you’ve seen it’s a hard place to go and get results We’ll be confident like we are going into every game but we have to focus on what we do rather than looking at what they do too much.” On the squad going forward after the transfer window the squad we have now has got us to where we have got to it has been a big ask in terms of the task we have been set every single one of them even the boys that haven’t played too many games we’ve got until the end of February [until the loan window shuts] we’ve got the squad we’ve got and that is more than enough for me.” On the team only being 2 points adrift of 8th at this stage “I always said and promised myself when I took over that I would go there and want to win games of football Every manager does but there’s a way you want to go about it and that is the position we’re in we want to try and play attacking football because we want to score goals and that’s the only way you’ll win games.” “What the group of players have done to get us to where we are right now has been incredible I think you can see with the setbacks we’ve had we’ve lost 1 out of the last 5 games and that set back pushed the boys on they want to get right back on it at training and go again.” Arbroath secured the William Hill League 1 title in style with a 4-0 win over Stenhousemuir at the Greenversity Stadium at Gayfield on Saturday evening Co-managers Colin Hamilton and David Gold have taken the team back to the Championship at the first attempt and got over the line with three games to spare with Fraser Taylor and Andy Winter also on target as Arbroath made it seven wins and two draws from their last nine matches The Red Lichties will receive the trophy after their last home game of the season against Queen of the South on Saturday May 3 This website is using a security service to protect announce that defender Aaron Muirhead has joined  SPFL League 1 side Arbroath on a loan deal until the end of the season Muirhead makes the switch to The Greenversity Stadium at Gayfield having started six times for Thistle this season with a further seven appearances being made from the bench Aaron’s debut campaign with the club would be a memorable one as he played 39 times and scored four goals during our First Division title-winning season He departed in 2015 but after spells with Falkirk and Ayr United he returned to Maryhill under Ian McCall in 2022 he has played over 100 times and contributed heavily to a pair of top four finishes for the team All at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill wish Aaron the very best for his loan spell DH Robertson butcher shop in Arbroath saw off competition from across the UK. DH Robertson saw off some of the finest black pudding makers in the UK to win the first competition of its kind in London. Steven Bennett runs the shop alongside his wife Pamela and daughter Ariane. He told STV News: “We’re totally overwhelmed. It still hasn’t sunk in.” He said: “We faced some amazing talent from the rest of the country and came out tops – that’s just fantastic.” Black pudding is a traditional sausage made from animal blood along with other ingredients including suet or fat, cereals, grains and often onions. The winning recipe remains a closely-guarded secret but is thought to date back to before World War Two. Customer Lesley Maguire told us it was definitely the best she had eaten. She said: “We like black pudding with lorne sausage and fried eggs for our tea sometimes. It’s absolutely delicious.” Another local resident said: “I usually have it on a Sunday for breakfast.” He said: “It’s lovely. Some of them can be too fatty but Robertsons’ is lovely!” Arbroath’s Place for Everyone cycle path has now been a year in construction The emerging result of the £14 million work shows a plain fact – this is a ridiculous misuse of money Being a councillor means making responsible decisions Your vanity project has failed miserably to do that If a £14m cycle path was desperately needed Anyone travelling up towards Fisheracre can only turn around and go back the way they came It’s a nine-tenths of a mile cycling blind alley Surely it would have made more sense to spend the money to connect the West Links with Victoria Park An attractive cycling bridge in the harbour area with a scenic travel route along Danger Point and South Street to King’s Drive and the cliffs With a long-term aim of continuing the Angus coastal link to Auchmithie That would at least have shown some semblance of a coherent It would have delivered a dual outcome of helping open up and celebrate Arbroath’s rich maritime history They could have insulated every house in Arbroath a much more environmentally friendly use of the money They could have improved flood defences around the Brothock Water If anyone thinks what has been done is the optimum use of public money and best result for Arbroath then not green campaigners (much more effective ways to spend this money) not motorists (who face pollution-creating delays or will find rat-runs to avoid it) One of the most striking things is that it proves long queues of traffic have been created Will many commute by bike along the new route Is this the most scenic place for people to enjoy walking or cycling Is it part of a well-thought-out integrated active travel strategy How typical of Angus Council to spend millions and end up with an example of their own incompetence You can always rely on them taking the expensive illogical long way round to making a mistake They’re too busy with petty internal plots and having a new set of office-bearers every second week Some of the less self-aware among them might trot along to cut the ribbon on their road to nowhere They’ll try to convince themselves how great it is And desperately cross their fingers hoping no one asks difficult questions like: “What is this cycle path actually for?”
