before Tiarnan O’Neill brought the sides level
Danny McCready and O’Neill were on target for their respective sides in tense finish that saw them finish level at 1-10 to 0-13

Kevin McStay is hoping Mayo can take inspiration from what Armagh achieved after they came up short in last year’s Ulster SFC final
The Orchard County went on to win the All-Ireland and McStay sees no reason why Mayo can’t do the same after their narrow Connacht final loss to Galway in Castlebar
"We just couldn't get our noses in front," the Mayo manager ruefully reflected when speaking to RTÉ
"There was plenty of time to do it and we nearly did once or twice
they’re the ones that come back to hurt you
"We’ll go back and have a good think about where it went wrong for us
This is our third or fourth big game as a group now in the last 12 months and we’re coming out on the wrong side of them
"I suppose we’ll take a little bit of solace
this time last year Armagh were in the same position
had lost their provincial title on penalties and yet were able to turn it around so that’s the big challenge for us now to get competitive in this group series."

ULSTER FINAL FAVOURITES: Donegal All-Ireland winner Eamon McGee believes All-Ireland champions Armagh are the form team heading into Saturday’s blockbuster Ulster final. Pic: Seb Daly/Sportsfile
Donegal and Armagh meet at St Tiernach’s Park
It is anticipated to be a close contest but McGee is concerned at the recent performances by the holders
I have watched them in all three championship games,” he said
speaking on the Irish Examiner’s Gaelic football podcast
“I was more confident before the Ulster championship
if you ask me genuinely are Donegal going to win an All-Ireland based on what I have seen in the championship
“They didn’t get a challenge against Derry
But I can’t say now Donegal will win an All-Ireland based on what I have seen
They are going up against a really well drilled team
But I think Armagh are going in as big favourites.”
Donegal won a dramatic decider on penalties last year
There are two areas that McGee hopes Jim McGuinness will develop as the season progresses
The winner of Saturday’s fixture will advance to Group 1 with Tyrone
“There is nobody athletically better than Donegal at the minute and the way they are able to transition
This high intensity trying to break lines all the time
I think that has to be a wee bit more dynamic now
The low block and I’d rather they kick more
Hopefully we see something come the All-Ireland series
I don’t think it will change for the Ulster final but we might see it in the All-Ireland series.”

Pic Philip Walsh Armagh goalkeeper Ethan Rafferty gets the nod ahead of Shaun Patton in Brendan Crossan's best 15 May 05
2025 at 7:55pm BSTBrendan Crossan sifts through the Donegal and Armagh panels and picks his best XV players
NOT the most articulate answer here – but there are just some defenders you like more than others. Paddy Burns is one of those players. The Forkhill native absolutely thrives in one-v-one duels. Some of his defending in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final against Kerry was epic. Young Finbarr Roarty of Donegal will win an Allstar in his career
he gets the nod over Donegal’s stay-at-home defender Brendan McCole
I WONDERED about him after he took time away from the inter-county set-up
Did he still have it in him after all the bumps and bruises
Man-marked every time he plays because the opposition must at least attempt to hammer the hammer
But trying to curtail McHugh is like trying to nail jelly
One thing you must accept before you face McHugh: he’s smarter than you
WHEN my editor gave me the dubious pleasure of sitting down to pick the best combination of Donegal and Armagh
Suspension and injury have curtailed him in 2025 but still a class player
I’M an unashamedly big fan of the St Patrick’s Cullyhanna man
great engine and has an awesome appetite for the ugly stuff
His game-winning dispossession of Darragh Canavan in the Ulster semi-final is a case in point
McQuillan is just so effective at both ends of the field
If you could manufacture a Gaelic footballer
ONE of the best long-distance shooters in the game. The leader of Glenties for an eternity, Thompson just edges out Armagh’s Ben Crealey, probably on his ability to regularly contribute to the scoreboard. Had a stunning game against Monaghan, less so against Down
Thompson’s value has probably inched up even further
YOU just have to find a place for Donegal’s totem in this team
All great players must be great decision-makers
but they are also brilliant at keeping the game simple
It could be a selfless decoy run or moving the ball on with a simple hand pass
There is no better team player in Gaelic football
Murphy still has the capacity to produce Hollywood moments too if the occasion demands it
the towering St Michael’s man has brilliant feet
a scoring threat from distance and has a penchant for moving in closer to goal where he can raise green flags
A powerful footballer and technically proficient
he’s also had a super Ulster campaign – brilliant against Monaghan and Down
ARMAGH’S playmaker doesn’t need 50 or 60 words to justify his inclusion in this make-believe team
Rory Grugan is Armagh’s shelter from the storm
He gives the pass we all see from the stands
His footballing IQ and work-rate are off the scale
DONEGAL’S interim boss Aidan O’Rourke didn’t know McBrearty until he shared a changing room with him
“I went into that environment thinking that Paddy McBrearty was the cherry on the cake kind of player – ‘everybody else will do the work and I’ll finish it’ – but he was much more than that
He’s an unbelievably resilient character.”
McBrearty’s inclusion here was straightforward
SLIGHTLY gangly physique, Turbitt always gives away weight advantages inside - but he is so adept at finding space he rarely makes it a physical contest. Probably the most accurate shooter in Armagh’s ranks. And yet, there are other forwards in Ulster who spring to mind quicker than his name but they’d do well to match his scoring economy.
But I thought this Armagh team were so well coached
with so many players who weren’t starting last year
Marc Ó SéMarc Ó Sé is a former Kerry inter-county footballer and a Gaelic football columnist with The Irish News
I remember meeting Kieran McGeeney with the International Rules
Seán Boylan was manager and Kieran was captain
Being totally honest I didn’t know Kieran before that
and Darragh had great time - and has great time - for Kieran McGeeney
I thought this man was an incredible footballer number one
It was something my Uncle Páidí used to always say: “Don’t ask them to do anything that you wouldn’t do yourself”
McGeeney certainly ticked all the boxes for me as a leader
I wanted to park my car in such a way that I could get out
because I was heading for Dublin afterwards
so this Ban Garda - she was brilliant altogether - she said:
go straight up through the car park after the game.”
I’d say Armagh outweighed the Tyrone supporters three to one
but then I wanted get stuck into the atmosphere too
She actually stopped the people so I could get up
and all of a sudden all I could see was a sea of supporters
and I was like a funeral like driving that slow
They were laughing when they saw the head inside it
and he said: “How the f*** did you get out
There’s no doubt that I was the first man out of Clones
Read More: How Oisin Conaty, Rory Grugan and Oisin O’Neill combined to drive Armagh to another Ulster final
I was absolutely thrilled that I was there to witness two outstanding teams going at it
the big thing is that for the kickouts they were absolutely annihilated
was going to his number five position a lot
If you hit that number five position once or twice
This is where Malachy O’Rourke can look at the video analysis we take stock of where they’re at
They know they can’t allow this to happen again
he’s got a lot that he can throw at his players
You could say Ruairí Canavan wasn’t firing
but Darren McCurry was absolutely outstanding
Not for one second would I write off Tyrone’s chances of winning an All-Ireland
I got to talking to Kieran Donaghy before the game
but obviously Kieran wouldn’t give much away at the same time
He said they had a few injuries and they weren’t going to test them if they’re not right
Can you imagine when all those guys are back
but Paddy Burns nullified a good bit of the threat
they were good enough to win the All-Ireland
but I was so impressed at Armagh’s ability not to take the ball into contact
laying it off and getting into different positions
he’s probably in a situation where loads of people are asking about his brother Rian
but he’s really stepped up and brought it to a new level
I would have Armagh at one from what I saw at the weekend
I’d have Kerry at three and I’d have Galway or Tyrone at four and five
I only have Kerry at three because I think they’d beat Galway
I’m not convinced they’d beat Armagh or Donegal
the term Jim Gavin used to use was “process”
The process can only be done if you have the players to carry it out
Read More: 3 reasons why Armagh can beat Donegal in the Ulster Championship final
I would say that Mick Fitzsimons is still the best inside defender in Dublin. John Small came back in fairness, and he probably hadn’t the full training done.
In terms of Stephen Cluxton, for me, Dessie has to make a huge call here. The range in Cluxton’s kickouts probably isn’t there.
I would be changing it up, bringing Evan Comerford in.
David O’Hanlon, for me, was the outstanding goalkeeper. I had him ahead of Comerford. I’d say he got totally disillusioned with all the talk about Cluxton coming back last year.
I remember years ago listening to Miriam O’Callaghan’s show on a Sunday morning, and my Uncle Páidí was on with Mick O’Dwyer, God be good to them.
Páidí and Micko spoke about when Micko dropped Páidí, and how they fell out for four or five years afterwards.
It took Páidí until such time as he was a manager himself to realise that Micko was right.
we're somehow going to have to regather ourselves for tomorrow's second semi-final between holders Donegal and Armagh which will be live on BBC Two NI and the BBC iPlayer from 14:45 BST
You can look back on all the incredible excitement in today's game by reading my colleague Matt Gault's match report.
All that remains to do is to thank you for your company today and hope that you enjoy the remainder of the weekend
