who walloped Whistlejacket in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh begins her journey to the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot with a return to the scene of her stunning debut success last season It was at the southern track where Babouche burst on to the scene last summer She won a maiden by five lengths and backed it up by beating Camille Pissarro in the Anglesey Stakes next time But it was her emphatic victory when upped to Group 1 level that stamped her as a filly of the highest standard She was given a Racing Post rating of 111 for that decisive victory over Whistlejacket The only blot on her copybook at two came on her final start of the campaign on soft ground in the Cheveley Park Stakes but that below-par effort can be easily forgiven If she’s close to her best here – and that could be a big if as trainer Ger Lyons said he has struggled to get her fit – she will take some stopping She is priced between 10-1 and 16-1 for the Commonwealth Cup Aidan O'Brien won this Listed prize last year with 5-2 favourite Cherry Blossom, and the champion trainer relies on Truly Enchanting here her sole defeat coming in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot Grande Marques is another filly who blossomed last season but held her form together extremely well and was just touched off in the Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket on the final start of her juvenile campaign in October She shaped with promise on her reappearance at Bath especially since she was kicked by a rival down at the start It is worth pointing out that Alice Haynes brought over Fix You to win this in 2023 while three of the of £650,000 and no race run for less than £110,000 Royal Ascot G1 entries Asfoora continued the superb record of Australian sprinters at Royal Ascot in 2024 as she stormed to victory in the King Charles III Stakes The six-year-old has made two appearances at Morphettville recently taking out the G3 R N Irwin Stakes before finishing seventh in the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes last weekend Asfoora could become the first horse from outside Europe to win the same Royal Ascot race twice Trainer Henry Dwyer said: “Asfoora is pointing towards Royal Ascot again We are trying to work out the logistics at the moment We had her over there at the start of May last year whereas she will travel over later this time but we would like to travel over earlier if possible to give her more time to settle in “She won first time up at Morphettville although we had not done a lot with her beforehand and maybe had her slightly underdone which I think took its toll 14 days later in the Robert Sangster She ran OK and was only beaten just under three lengths but I was disappointed not to finish a bit closer she has come out of it well and we are happy to roll the dice again in Europe “Winning at Royal Ascot was a blur at the time,” the trainer added I suppose the novelty of it is not going to be there this year but I am sure it will be loads of fun and I am excited to get back over there.” Japan has six entries as the country seeks a first Royal Ascot success including leading sprinter Satono Reve in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes for trainer Noriyuki Hori Winner of the G1 Takamatsunomiya Coronation Stakes a race in which her trainer Graham Motion has finished second twice with Sharing (2020) and Spendarella (2022) Laurelin kicked off her 2025 campaign with a Listed success at the same New York course last weekend I really wasn’t sure if she was fit enough today but I wanted to get her started in this race because she does so well at Aqueduct “I think everything is on the table at this point and I will nominate her to the Coronation at Ascot in June,” he went on “But there are so many nice races for 3-year-old fillies over here as well The one thing I’ll say is I won’t be in a hurry to run her back I thought she ran a big race today.” Queen Anne Stakes entry Grand Mo The First could be a first Royal Ascot runner for Florida trainer Victor Barboza Jr The potential French Royal Ascot Ascot Lloyd has introduced a new pricing structure as part of its rebranding strategy The IFA firm said the new structure reflects its ambition to be more transparent on fees It added that the tiered approach underscored a desire to “make financial advice more accessible” for a wider set of clients It is based on total funds under management (FUM) with an ongoing fee percentage determined by bandings Ascot Lloyd also announced the launch of its new brand to showcase “the modern digitally-enabled proposition” the firm is building It said the new brand identity is underpinned by a “sharper focus” on what clients are looking for in a financial adviser which Ascot Lloyd said has been informed by “extensive research” will equip the business with a deep understanding of what expert advice means to different client segments Ascot Lloyd chief executive Francis Jackson said: “Our new brand signifies the evolution of Ascot Lloyd’s proposition for clients “It reflects the modern and engaging approach to financial advice we take and underpins our focus on what clients want “Our value proposition for clients is a clear one: expert advice “To best serve the distinct requirements that our range of clients come to us with “This evolution keeps us competitive and importantly opens up new client segments for the business “We are continuing to build a high-quality business and our refreshed brand is an exciting milestone in our journey.” Ascot Lloyd is a private-equity-backed firm that provides financial planning wealth management and corporate benefit services to more than 57,000 clients It has £11bn in funds under management You must be logged in to post a comment Course form can often prove key to winning on Ascot’s straight course and Electrolyte boasts one of the best runs at the track courtesy of his narrow second in last year’s Coventry Stakes He was beaten just a nose by Rashabar that day and that rival went on to take second in two Group 1s Electrolyte came up short in two Group 2s after his second at the royal meeting but confirmed that he is a sprinter on the up when landing a Group 3 at Chantilly in September and the return to this course will surely suit The question is whether he is good enough to win a Group 1 trial Big Mojo was last seen at the top level in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar and finished only a length behind winner Magnum Force That is the best form judging on Racing Post Ratings but he's yet to race at Ascot and returns from wind surgery Trainer Mick Appleby has a good record with runners who are having their first start after an operation having saddled eight winners from 38 runners for a healthy 21 per cent strike-rate Maybe that is an indication that Big Mojo will be set to go on his return from the procedure Rebel’s Gamble is another without a proven Ascot record but he does have plenty of all-weather form and that has been a route to finding winners on the straight track at this course over the years He also looked something special when scoring at Lingfield last time Trainer Karl Burke won that race with subsequent Group 2 winner El Caballo in 2022 and Rebel’s Gamble has similar potential There is every chance he can outclass this promising field.Race analysis by Graeme Rodway Adam Ryan, assistant trainer of Ain't NobodyHe shapes as though six furlongs will be his trip this year but as the season went on he looked like he wanted six He had a good season but was always going to do better at three and he's a bigger It's a good starting point to find out where we go He'll have to take a step forward if he was to go for the Commonwealth Cup Karl Burke, trainer of Arabie and Rebel's GambleThey're both in good order I'd expect Arabie to improve for the visor He's always been a horse who gallops and works behind the bridle and Jim Crowley [jockey] has been asking for it for a little while Rebel's Gamble's form on the all-weather is very good and although he needs to transfer that to the turf I don't see any reason why he can't because he's bred for the turf He drops back from his good win over seven at Lingfield but the stiff six and a good gallop will suit him well trainer of Big MojoHe should have a decent chance as he's been working very well He's had his palate cauterised as when we got him back he was a bit thick in his wind but I think he'll get the six as he's strengthened up a lot owners of ElectrolyteHe ran a massive race when beaten a nose in the Coventry and then at the backend he won the Prix Eclipse He's wintered well and Archie [Watson] seems happy with him Like most of them I'm sure he'll come forward for it Charlie Appleby, trainer of HallasanHe has proved a consistent horse and we feel dropping back to six furlongs is going to suit He won over a mile in Dubai but it’s an easy mile around Meydan and he shows a lot of natural pace He’s fit and well from the winter and should be competitive.Reporting by Andrew Dietz Looking for free bets? The British Horseracing Authority’s Flat Pattern Committee (FPC) has today confirmed changes to the Flat Pattern and Listed race programme for 2025, following ratification by the European Pattern Committee (EPC) Britain will stage two new Group 1 events in 2025 August) and British Champions Long Distance Cup (2m October) being upgraded to the highest level Both races will also see a significant increase in total prize money for this year A long-term ambition for Britain to stage an all-aged 7-furlong Group 1 race – the second of its kind in Europe alongside the Prix de la Forèt at ParisLongchamp in October – has been well publicised for a number of years with the City Of York identified as the race most likely to achieve that goal The FPC is pleased that the continued efforts of the committee and the investment in the race from York racecourse has been rewarded The British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot joins the other Group 1 races on British Champions Day to offer opportunities at the top level through the full range of distances Two permanent black type race transfers have also been approved by the FPC July) switching from Newmarket racecourse to York and Beverley respectively The latter race will also be renamed as the Charlie Wood Stakes Charlie Woods having been a contemporary of Fred Archer who finished second to him in the jockeys’ championship in seven consecutive years and was born in nearby Hull The FPC also confirmed the movement of both the Listed Churchill Stakes (10f with both races transferring from Newcastle to Southwell and being run approximately one week later in 2025 owing to changes in the British fixture list Kempton Park’s Listed Wild Flower Stakes (12f December) will also move later by two weeks to ensure an optimum gap with the Churchill is maintained and the FPC is grateful to all those involved for facilitating this May) was handed back to the FPC by the previous host racecourse After inviting applications from other racecourses the FPC selected Haydock Park as the new venue for the Rothesay from 2025 with the race to be run this year on Saturday 24 May two of Britain’s black type races could be at potential risk of downgrade depending on their performance in 2025 Those races are the Group 2 Mill Reef at Newbury (6f and the Listed National Stakes at Sandown Park (5f which would be downgraded automatically if not reaching the required annual parameter said: “This is simply fantastic news and a real credit to everyone involved and especially our valued partners who have made a significant investment to help us build the prize fund and status of the City of York Stakes to now be Britain’s only all-age Group 1 race over seven furlongs My thanks to the European Pattern Committee and to all the connections who have supported the race and so helped it achieve this new status It means racing fans can look forward to a Group One race on all four days of the Sky Bet Ebor Festival alongside our programme which features so many fabulous races such as the Sky Bet Ebor itself.” Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course at York Racecourse said: “We are thrilled that all the hard work support and investment in the Sky Bet City of York Stakes has been rewarded by its elevation to the highest level of racing I am delighted to confirm that Britain’s only all age Group 1 over 7 furlongs will be run for a record prize fund of £600,000 – a boost of £100,000 on last year’s renewal The York Race Committee has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to high quality racing so we are thrilled to have a fourth Group One at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival for everyone to enjoy “Having both this Group One Sky Bet City of York Stakes and our most famous race on the same afternoon on Saturday 23rd August should see it inked into the diaries of all connections and racefans as a fabulous day of action The recent news that the Juddmonte International has been rated the Longines World’s Best Race shows the global resonance of our Group One contests and that can only be amplified by the latest addition to their ranks Following on from the honour of being named Showcase Champions at the RCA awards there is much to look forward to at York for the 2025 season.” Chief Executive of British Champions Series said: “We are delighted with the upgrade of the Long Distance Cup to Group 1 status which has been our longstanding aspiration We are grateful for the BHA’s consistent support For QIPCO British Champions Day to stage five Group 1 races across every category for three-year-olds and upwards is a tremendous achievement and further cements its status as one of the best days of racing in the world.” BHA’s Director of International Racing and Development said: “A very different picture to this time last year with the outcome of the EPC meeting an encouraging demonstration of what can be achieved when we work together It really is a significant achievement to see the City of York upgraded to Group 1 with this having been our long-term and ambitious plan as the race gradually climbed through the ranks from Listed status York has been a patient and consistent supporter of the long-term strategy to develop this race into Britain’s 7-furlong Group 1 race it’s wonderful to now be in a position to reward the Long Distance Cup on Qipco’s British Champions Day and see that too become a long-awaited and much-deserved Group 1 event The overall progress for the stayers’ project across Europe is extremely heartening; we must continue to add fuel to the upward momentum being experienced.” The BHA’s Flat Pattern Committee advises and makes recommendations to the BHA Board on matters relating to improving the programme of Flat Pattern and Listed with the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes to be run for £1.5m for the first time (£1.25m in 2024) – which will make it the richest race ever run at Ascot The £17.75m figure excludes the industry-owned QIPCO British Champions Day (£4.1m in 2024) the King George will become a ‘Run For Free’ race with connections of all horses that run (except supplementary entries) refunded their entry fees in full Prize-money at Royal Ascot in 2025 will once again be £10m with no race run for less than £110,000 and all G1 races worth a minimum of £650,000 Across the rest of the programme there are some other targeted increases with no race scheduled to be run for less than in 2024 Ruth Quinn (BHA director of international racing and development) said:“The King George is obviously a wonderfully iconic race and plays a vital role in the programme particularly in terms of the ever-important middle-distance horse “Ascot’s ‘Run For Free’ concept especially for this extremely valuable prize is an example of tremendous initiative and dynamic thinking particularly against the backdrop of increasing international competition to entice high-quality runners The ability for owners to have entry stakes returned and therefore be able to compete in this great race for free shows welcome enterprise and should help to increase the attractiveness of lining up in this event.” Other race condition changes in 2025 will see the early-closing entry requirements for the four G2 races at Royal Ascot that currently close in April removed.  the Duke of Cambridge Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes.  The combined effect of the prize-money increases and race condition changes will see Ascot’s executive contribution to prize money increase from £9.4m in 2024 to a budgeted £10.1m in 2025 Paul Johnson (chief executive of the National Trainers Federation) said:“Trainers will certainly appreciate the extra flexibility that converting these Group 2s to becoming normal closers offers This will allow for more informed decision-making in the build-up to these races and will hopefully see Ascot rewarded with competitive contests “The introduction of ‘Run for Free’ for the King George is also a concept that we hope will encourage runners in tandem with the significant increase in prize-money.” Felicity Barnard (Ascot CEO) said:“We are delighted to be continuing our upward trajectory in prize money for 2025 and through changes to entry conditions for the Group 2 races at Royal Ascot and ‘Run For Free’ for the King George we will be absorbing more costs usually paid by owners “The King George is our midsummer highlight and Britain’s top all-aged mile-and-a-half race It is vital that its prize-money reflects that and this year’s renewal will be the most valuable race ever run at Ascot.” Nick Smith (Ascot director of racing and public affairs) added:“We have been thinking about the concept of ‘Run For Free’ for the King George for some time as a mechanism for incentivising runners at decision-making time as there are other alternatives lower down the Pattern and overseas and we hope that connections of horses that aren’t at the top of the betting might see this as a good reason to go for the big target especially with record prize money on offer.  “The four races with historical early closing at the Royal Meeting will now close at the five-day stage giving connections more time to identify the right horses for these races we are ensuring that no race at Ascot will be run for less than the previous year.” • Visit the Ascot Racecourse website Home » Asfoora is set to return to Royal Ascot this year and bid to defend her title in the King Charles III Stakes despite disappointing in Australia at the weekend The Henry Dwyer-trained star gave her year Dwyer hopes she will fly over in the middle of May and arrive at the latest on June 4 Dwyer told racing.com: "Either way it's too tight for a lead-up run over there and you probably wouldn't do one anyway as we're coming back from 1,200 metres [six furlongs] to a 1,000m [five furlongs] "Because the weather is changing in Australia you don't want her out in the paddock and getting rough and scrubby again We'll rug her up and keep the lights on until later at night because the lack thereof turns them into winter horses." Asfoora made a winning Australian return in a Group 3 at Morphettville this month, but was only seventh in the Robert Sangster Stakes at that track on Saturday that has not deterred Dwyer from sending his star back to Britain "I just thought when they put in an effort like she did first-up after such a long break it's going to take something out of them," he added "A two-week turnaround with a solid gallop on the Tuesday and a trip over there "Despite the fact it was 1,200 metres and she raced a bit wide I still thought she was entitled to go better and finish closer – she just raced a bit flat She got beaten just over two and a half lengths so it wasn't the end of the world." week at Royal Ascot Whether that is in the Coventry or the Norfolk Stakes remains to be seen,  with his trainer not shirking away from the speed test of the latter, for all the Coventry would appear the more obvious option having stepped up to six furlongs at the weekend in such imperious style The previous three winners of Saturday's maiden went on to win two Group 2s and a Group 1 between them and will have an immediate start for his new connections who are keen for him to take up his engagement in the William Walker Stakes at Churchill Downs next Wednesday who signed for Normandy Coast on behalf of Judy's Four Sons Stables confirmed that the colt will remain with trainer Eddie Kenneally “Eddie is going to stay in," Wells said "I bought him for a friend of mine that’s newer to the business and we are going to run on Wednesday at Churchill Downs [in the $300,000 William Walker Stakes].He has already been entered.”  Wells added that the price was "fair" adding: "Normandy Coast is a very good individual So we are going to take him ]to Churchill] and run him see how he does on the turf and we will go from there.” Kenneally's business model is a trading one and the trainer explained how the timing of Normandy Coast's first stakes success and a confluence of events led to the sale-topping price The fact that he won the stakes here earlier in the meet it just cemented the idea to go ahead and put him in the catalogue.”  It’s just a good fit for me because we run a lot of horses at Keeneland Tough Critic enjoyed an even more condensed racing and sales experience as the two-year-old Caravaggio colt won his maiden at Keeneland just 24 hours prior to selling for $350,000 and he could be destined for Royal Ascot He too will remain with his trainer as George Weaver who prepared the colt for his successful debut signed for the grandson of Invincible Spirit on behalf of different owners in the yard Weaver's assistant Blair Golen was on duty at the sale “I have always liked this horse since we have had him,” Golen said “He’s matured and grown up so much and he showed that on the track There is Ascot and that is a lovely place to go and we have a string in New York Paramount Sales consigned Tough Critic on behalf of Dew Sweeps and Lesley Campion said that trading was also Sweeps' business model “We were thrilled to consign this colt," Campion said "The move he made yesterday [Thursday] was phenomenal I feel we are selling a lot of ‘blue skies,’ and he is loaded with potential they can have all the fun in the world at Royal Ascot and Saratoga and you have the New York-bred [bonus] programme for him.” The sale produced five horses to make at least $200,000 with 44 of the 50 horses offered selling in the ring for a total of $3,884,000 which represented a slight drop on last year's aggregate of $3,940,000 for 54 horses sold However the year-on-year growth in the average was 21 per cent from $72,963 to $88,271 while the median improved by an enormous 69 per cent in that time; leaping from $38,500 to $65,000 “This sale was a lovely complement to the race meet,” Keeneland vice president of sales Tony Lacy said The energy from the race day rolled down Britain’s most prestigious all-aged Flat race the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in late July placing it alongside the Derby in June as the country’s most valuable race while it will also be Britain’s first “run for free” contest with entry fees – except for supplementaries – refunded to owners if their horses eventually go to post a long way short of the money on offer for some of the world’s other top 12-furlong races on turf There is €5m (£4.15m) in the kitty for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October and $5m (£4m) on offer for the Breeders’ Cup Turf in early November while the 1.085m yen (£6m) Japan Cup trumps them all But the extra quarter of a million for the King George which will ensure it is the richest race ever staged at Ascot is still a significant statement of intent by the track at a time when the Jockey Club has announced a prize-money freeze at its 15 tracks in 2025 So how has Ascot – and not for the first time – managed to buck the trend One point that should probably be made at the outset not least out of fairness to the rest of Britain’s racecourses big and small is that Ascot has a something of a head-start in terms of its ownership (by the reigning monarch) its unique showpiece meeting in June and the invaluable brand-recognition that comes attached Ascot also has a fine track record for exploiting its distinctive appeal to the full attracting horses from around the world to the Royal meeting in particular more recent boost to the track’s income in its decision to refund entry fees to the owners of horses in speaks about potential stable star Tina's Indian – plus a lively outsider for the trainer at the Cheltenham Festival  Trainer Mark Fahey has revealed that he is dreaming of Royal Ascot for potential stable star Tina's Indian (Ire) (Calyx {GB})-but first the man who is widely regarded as one of the sharpest young trainers in Ireland is taking aim at the Cheltenham Festival with the battle-hardened hurdler Flicker Of Hope (Fr) (Buck's Boum {Fr}) and is quietly confident of hitting the back of the net Flicker Of Hope will represent the self-proclaimed 'smaller trainer's' first runner at the Cheltenham Festival when the four-time winner lines out for the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle for which the six-year-old can be backed at odds of 14-1 “It's my first ever runner at the Cheltenham Festival,” he said “Everyone keeps telling me that Flicker Of Hope has the right profile for the Albert Bartlett–he has had 10 runs over hurdles He is hardened over the trip and has major handicap experience which should stand to him in a race like the Albert Bartlett.” he travels and he doesn't seem to stop so we're looking forward to getting over there and hopefully he can put up a big performance It would be a dream to get placed and walk back into the winner's enclosure with him Fahey has already bettered last season's tally of six winners over jumps and currently sits on 11 The upward trajectory of his County Kildare stable has been mirrored on the Flat where last year's domestic haul stood at a career-high 13 None of those winners were more exciting than Curragh maiden scorer Tina's Indian who is on course to make his seasonal return in the Gladness Stakes back at Irish racing's HQ Our plan is to go for the Gladness Stakes at the Curragh and I am a small trainer and I don't have lots of black-type horses on the Flat so how we run in the Gladness will dictate where we go for the rest of the year I don't have horses rated 100 that we can get a gauge off so we won't know how good Tina's Indian is until we put him in a Listed race He's definitely the best Flat horse I've ever had in my yard.” “Shane Foley and Ronan Whelan are a great help to me They ride horses of this calibre the whole time so it's brilliant to have their feedback We're hopeful that Tina's Indian can be competitive in those kinds of races this season We don't know where the ceiling is with him That's what took us so long with him.” good staff and nice horses and at the moment I have all three I have great staff and great family and friends around me too-they just let me get on with things and do what I have to do I am lucky that I have been able to get my hands on some good horses There's a big element of luck in getting Tina's Indian as well because he didn't sell as a yearling and there were loads of offers on the table.” “Fair play to Con Harrington and James Hughes as they said they'd rather roll the dice on the track with him we were blown away by the offers–it was a lot of money–but Con and James are sporting fellas and we're all fairly excited about what could be in store They are dreaming just as much as I am with Tina's Indian but they understand the game better than anyone and know that the bubble could burst fairly lively But he's definitely the best Flat horse I've ever had anything to do with and we're looking forward to finding out more about him in the Gladness.” Copy Article Link Click Here to sign up for a free subscription.
