Residents in Bacup are protesting against Rossendale Council's plans to build a new 50,000-tonne-a-year-capacity waste disposal unit in the town centre
There is already a waste transfer site on the proposed location but the new building is due to be bigger
Charlie Codd's back garden directly faces the disposal unit and says he has got used to the sights
But the council's plans are causing new worries for him and his neighbours
"There are a large concentration of houses that will be affected by odour
He added: "They [the council] have said that the odour will be in low wind condition and the contminated dust will be in worse in high wind conditions
we'll be getting it one way or another."
The Henrietta Street site is used for collecting and sorting recyclable waste
The council’s proposing a new waste transfer building at the site
which will allow it to meet a Government requirement to collect food waste separately from other household waste
But residents fear the plans will lead to more lorries delivering and collecting waste from the site - and more disruption to their lives
Lynda Melvin who lives nearby said "The smells
and what it's going to do to the town centre
it's supposed to be a heritage town and they are doing all these improvements
and it's just going to be worse than ever."Residents made their feelings known at a peaceful protest outside the council office on Friday 3rd January
insisting they won’t lead to any increase in the amount of waste it handles.Councillor Alyson Barnes
Rossendale Council said " We're not changing anything
we're still going to be processing the same waste from the same households
We're just going to be sorting it differently
"I would like to reassure residents that we are looking to improve what they are already
if we encase this in a building state the outlook will be improved
but I think the general experience will be improved as well
It won't be as messy and as smelly as it currently is."

Local Neighbourhood Sergeant Paul Marsden said: “It’s great that we have been able to remove a quantity of illegal tobacco products from the streets of Bacup
“We will continue to actively work with our partner agencies to tackle the issues and concerns of our communities and this day of action is just a small example of the kind of activity we do day-in-day-out
“We would encourage the community to continue to report their concerns
so that the right agency can take action as those engaging in this illegal activity.”
