Breckland Council has completed the sale of Barnham Broom Hotel
Spa & Golf Club and has already put the funding raised to good use for the people of Breckland
The district council bought the land and buildings at the 257-acre site for £7m in 2006
The council's total income (sale and rent) from its 19-year ownership of the hotel and golf club site was £11.68m
the council made a further investment of £1.95m in the asset
This means the overall profit made by the council is £2.73m and the acquisition was a strong commercial investment
The site has been bought by the owner-operator of the golf club and hotel business who
had leased the land and buildings from the council
Breckland has already used the capital funding to directly support local people; it has used some of the money to purchase new temporary housing in the district to support those in housing crisis
Breckland Council originally purchased the site as part of a multi-million-pound investment portfolio
Money received in rent from the council's diversified property portfolio - including rent received from the council's ownership of the Barnham Broom site - has been used to keep financial pressure off local taxpayers
enabling the local authority to help provide services to Breckland residents
commented: "The figures show just what a good investment the golf club has been for this council and our residents
The steady stream of reliable income over nearly 20-years has played a big factor in helping Breckland maintain a good financial position compared to our peers and has enabled us to keep the pressure off local taxpayers as much as possible
"The rent brought in by this and our other investments has played an important role in enabling us to go above and beyond in the services we provide
helping to fund our Inspiring Communities programme
which has provided important support for people up and down our district who are facing isolation
"We're now further putting the money from the capital sale to very good use
by investing into temporary accommodation which will bolster this important resource and help meet the unprecedented demand
so everybody in Breckland has a safe place to call home."
the original founder and owner of Barnham Broom Hotel and Golf Club
commented: "I'd like to thank the council for being steadfast in its commitment to maintain our landlord and tenant relationship over a long period
I am also grateful for the council's confidentiality during the lengthy due diligence and negotiation period
I'm delighted that we have now bought back the freehold and can recombine this with our operating business
This strengthens our position to consider how we might evolve and grow further in the future for the benefit of our local communities
as well as our loyal staff and hard-working employees."
added: "Some people in the past have wanted to scrutinise the details of any proposed arrangements and check how public money is being used
to get the best possible deal and avoid potentially damaging a local business and employer
it has been important to maintain commercial confidentiality during this long process
"That requirement has unfortunately led to inaccurate speculation and misinformation being spread about this investment
we are pleased to be able to set the record straight and give confidence to our residents that the investment we made on their behalf has generated considerable income over a number of years which has benefited local people."
When did Breckland Council buy the freehold at the Barnham Broom site
How much did Breckland Council buy the property for
This was more than the market valuation of the property
How much rent has been earnt from holding the property
What has been the investment return / yield
Has the Council made a loss or a profit on this asset
Comparing what the Council bought the property for plus what it invested in the property to what the Council has received from rent while we owned it and the proceeds of the sale
the Council has made £2.73m surplus (profit)
The rent we received - along with rent from the rest of our investment portfolio which also includes offices
shop buildings and other assets - has been used to fund local services
The income from the sale has already been used to buy new housing properties to help people in the district who are facing homelessness
of the golf and hotel business has bought the freehold of the property
the operator was renting the property from the Council

a 36-hole golf and leisure resort based in Norfolk
has been sold back to its founder and current operator by Breckland Council
The district council bought the land and buildings at the Norwich-based venue for £7 million in 2006

the council said made a further investment of £1.95m in the asset
resulting in an overall profit of £2.73m over that period

Julie Wilson-Homewood scooped £166,666 just days before Christmas and now wants to make weaver daughter Torie's dreams come true by investing in some sheep to help grow her wool-based clothing business
Jolly Julie added: "I'm just so happy because I know that things are also going to change for Torie now
That could be something down the line that might happen."
Julie was among nine neighbours sharing our £1m Millionaire Street prize after their postcode
but Julie doubled her winnings with two tickets
Tearful Julie was supported by daughter Torie when Danyl presented her with her cheque while car mechanic hubby Paul was at work
Julie said: "I was in disbelief that it could happen
and then when I saw all the Postcode Lottery red jackets

Torie now has her sights set on moving to Scotland
but Julie also hopes to explore the Highlands and islands and see the Northern Lights in Norway with Paul
but I do think we will be going back to Scotland
I think that will definitely be on the cards next year

She said: "I can help my husband retire; he deserves it
it's not the first time neighbours of Marshall Close have tasted a lottery success

which landed each player £1,000 for every ticket they held
Julie said: "I got a golden envelope through the letterbox and it told me I'd won £2,000
"But we didn't want to give up playing because you know it's going to continue to help charities
and there is that little bit in the back of your mind that says
Julie is determined to keep her "old little blue car" instead of splashing out
She said: "My car's MOT is due the beginning of January and my husband said it's probably not going to pass
or it's going to cost more than the car is worth
I might pay to try and get that through the MOT now."
I'm really content with my life and we're not flashy."
Julie was also delighted for her neighbours
She said: "I'm so happy that so many of us on the close have won
Julie was just as pleased when she heard that local charities would also benefit from their win
and I can give more to the charities that I love

and now it has paid off in triple as she scored the largest sum on the street
She said: "I was so pleased when I won £1,000
She said: "The big thing is that I can take care of the house
so some of it will go towards spending money
and I can think about myself for a change."
Diane didn't have long to let her big win sink in as she had another seven-hour night shift that evening
She said: "I'll be thinking about this all night long
Barbara Edwards will watch her favourite Irish crooner
I go to his shows at least five times a year
"I'll be able to go to even more places to see him now
I'm going to Bournemouth and then up to Liverpool and then to Croydon to see him
"I've already got my dresses for each show; I bought them a couple of months ago."
Grandmother Barbara - who also won £1,000 in 2020 and says she'll now buy a second ticket - plans on spoiling their granddaughter with a day out shopping alongside husband Pete
The couple is also hoping to upgrade their car
and we were actually looking in the showroom
I was looking at a nice Volkswagen last week."
Pete - who is also eyeing up a trip to his favourite Greek isle of Kos - added: "This is such a thrill for us and a bonus
The delighted gran and her nursery worker daughter Rebecca - who still lives at home - each bagged £83,333

"I've always wanted to go on a Caribbean cruise
Jersey is the only other place I've wanted to go."
Former ground maintenance worker John chipped in: "I'd like to go to Turkey
Pamela added: "It's lovely to win with my daughter
and amazing that next door has won as well

a fishing destination near Lake Balaton in Hungary
It's known for being the home of the world record carp
Michael said: "We've been to France to fish
I'll definitely think about going to Euro Aqua as they have the biggest carp in the world."
We usually go to a spot in the New Forest National Park
He'll definitely buy something to do with fishing."

The fridge engineer said: "We want to take the kids away on a family holiday to Turkey
and I'll definitely be paying for this one
is retiring shortly and said their win couldn't have come at a better time
NHS worker Paula James also bagged the same sum
and the news comes just as she's about to welcome her first grandchild
who works in the radiology department at a local hospital
I've never seen that much money in my life
"It's a really exciting time as my daughter Amy is due in March
and it's my first grandchild - a baby girl."

The Valley is the senior of the two courses
