Two new Gehry Partners designed buildings will be delivered at Battersea Power Station Consent includes dedicated senior living accommodation as part of a new multi-generational community completion of London’s newest town centre high street alongside new public community facilities also integral to new phase Battersea Power Station remains the only residential project in the UK by globally recognised Construction expected to start later this year with completion anticipated in 2029 Planning consent for the next phase of Battersea Power Station has been granted marking another major step in delivering the vision for the 42-acre regeneration project Battersea Power Station is to bring forward a new phase of residential community and leisure development having secured detailed planning approval from Wandsworth Council This latest phase adds two new Gehry Partners designed residential buildings comprising 306 new homes They will form an extension to the highly recognisable existing two buildings at Prospect Place and remain the only residential buildings in the UK designed by Frank Gehry the world-famous architect and designer of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao The ongoing focus on sustainability means these latest designs have a more modern aesthetic to reduce the carbon footprint while green roofs will also be present throughout both buildings contributing to a minimum 10% biodiversity net gain Gehry Partners’ latest additions to the Battersea Power Station streetscape will juxtapose white sculptural facades in a postmodern interpretation of John Nash’s neo-classical terraces that are stereotypical of Regency London in contrast to the stark industrial brick architecture of the historic Power Station In a first for Battersea Power Station and in line with the project’s objective of creating a truly multigenerational community around the iconic Power Station is proposed to include senior living apartments to be managed by a specialist operator for over 65s and includes access to additional care and on-site facilities As with Gehry Partners’ first two buildings at Battersea Power Station every home within this latest phase will be unique in design Both buildings will sit on a communal podium part of which extends to form a private garden square for residents Positioned opposite to the new office building and the western entrance of Battersea Power Station’s London Underground station that is due to open later this summer this latest approval allows Battersea Power Station to complete the development of London’s newest high street adding 70,000 sq ft of new commercial space for shops Existing shops on the high street include children’s clothing brand Lindex Boots Beauty and Borough Kitchen with more to come including WatchHouse This newest phase further extends Battersea Power Station’s objective of creating new facilities and opportunities for the local area expanding the existing community and cultural programme with the addition of a 15,000 sq ft Community Hub This new civic space will be designed in partnership with Wandsworth Council Local stakeholders will be consulted on the concept vision and on the appointment of a specialist community cultural operator who will curate a programme offering a wide range of events and activities to complement the existing offer To encourage sustainable and healthy travel to and from Battersea Power Station the new community facilities include an expanded Bike Hub which will have 600 spaces available for all adding to the existing total of over 6,800 jobs Battersea Power Station has provided to date as well as adding to the 2,500 residents who already call it home Construction is expected to start later this year with completion anticipated in 2029 “I am very happy that the next phase of the Battersea project is underway These two buildings will help our masterplan which was designed to create the feeling of a neighbourhood In keeping the same body language of the original we have continued the white material of these buildings referencing the incredible history of the Nash Terraces The winter gardens help break down the scale of the facades while also giving each unit a beautiful Our goal from the beginning has been to make something that is unique to London and unique to this incredible new district in the city Head of Development at Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) “This milestone is the next step in realising the long-term vision for Battersea Power Station With detailed planning consent now secured we’re extending Gehry Partners’ distinctive architectural legacy adding new homes while introducing senior living for the first time and completing Electric Boulevard — London’s newest high street As well as lots of new opportunities in the form of shops the phase also includes a new Community Hub to support local events and activities which will be designed in close partnership with Wandsworth Council and the wider community We are moving beyond the halfway point in delivering the masterplan and we look forward to starting on site in the coming months as we work towards another key milestone at this incredible regeneration project.” The regeneration of Battersea Power Station has created a vibrant mixed-used destination for London and a sixth town centre for the London Borough of Wandsworth with the Grade II* listed Power Station at its heart Over 2,200 homes have been delivered to date including 386 affordable homes at New Mansion Square in partnership with Peabody The riverside neighbourhood is also home to more than 150 shops and a thriving office community with over 3,500 office workers based across over 60 different companies including Apple who has its 500,000 sq ft UK 28-storey tower at One Battersea Bridge have been rejected by Wandsworth’s Planning application Committee at a meeting on Thursday 24 May.  The committee concluded that the proposal was of excessive size and would disrupt the character of the waterfront said “The Committee is responsible for the scrutiny of applications and considers the merits of an application on paper as well as the voices of residents The committee were unanimous about the harms of a 29-storey tower in this location in breach of Wandsworth’s Local Plan which sets out acceptable heights for the area.”  Council officers had recommended the application for refusal due to its height and scale in comparison to the local area, which goes against the guidelines set out the borough’s Local Plan and the London Plan. my friends Simon and Trevor We got the early train to Clapham Junction and had a pleasant walk from there to the beautiful Battersea park we even got chatting to a fellow parkrunner on route we ensured we got our obligatory picture with the event sign these become quite a collection for parkrun tourists like ourselves We also wrote down where we were from on a large board visitors had come from as far as Australia New Zealand and South Africa for today’s event The large 200 acre park derives from the Victorian era and was built between 1854 and 1870 It is a great place to visit for a walk or run at any time with some lovely green space and even has a pitch and putt crazy golf course and a Go Ape course along with some boats you can rent on a lake serving some delicious food and beverages and there are toilets within walking distance of the start We also went to the newly redeveloped Power Station and climbed lift 109 afterwards which was wonderful and had incredible views over London Today the park was very busy as there was another 5k and 10k run happening after the parkrun but as one volunteer I spoke to said to me “we are the free one.” parkrun is of couse free for everyone The course itself was a thankfully flat 2 lap with today an astonishing 122 people getting a sub 20 minutes time the most I have ever seen at a parkrun I have attended Well done to all those who achieved PBs today I would recommend attending this course if you are trying for a PB Congratulations to those who completed milestones today and a huge welcome and well done to those who completed their first ever parkrun A massive thank you to all 47 volunteers today including some Marshal’s cheerfully wearing Easter bunny ears This wonderful event wouldn’t happen without you I encourage you to give it a try one day if you can very addictive and an easy way to meet and talk to like minded people Hope to see lots of you at Battersea and other future parkrun events in the into a vibrant mixed-use community  This ambitious project is part of a broader regeneration effort to revitalise the area and create a dynamic urban environment Gehry’s design is notable for its innovative architecture and commitment to sustainability The development includes a mix of residential and cultural spaces designed to foster community and connectivity “Our vision is to create a place where people can live and enjoy life in a harmonious setting,” Gehry explained “We want to respect the history of the site while bringing a modern touch to its future.” A key aspect is its emphasis on green spaces with plans for parks and gardens that provide residents and visitors with areas to relax and unwind “Creating green spaces is essential for urban living,” said project manager Emily Clarke “They offer a breath of fresh air and a place for the community to come together.” Local businesses and residents are optimistic about the potential benefits “This project is a game-changer for the area,” said local business owner Tom Harris “It will attract new visitors and bring a fresh energy to the community The development is also committed to sustainability incorporating eco-friendly technologies and designs and sustainable materials are integral to the project ensuring it aligns with modern environmental standards “Sustainability is at the heart of our design,” Gehry emphasised “We want to create a development that not only looks beautiful but also respects the planet.” Community engagement remains a priority as the project progresses Regular consultations and feedback sessions are being held to ensure that the development meets the needs and expectations of local residents “We are committed to listening to the community and incorporating their feedback into our plans,” Clarke noted “Their input is crucial in shaping a development that truly reflects the spirit of the area.” Gehry’s Battersea Power Station development represents a bold and forward-thinking approach to urban regeneration it is set to become a landmark destination in London it promises to bring lasting benefits to the area and its residents marking a new chapter in Read our privacy notice Plans for a controversial high-rise development on Battersea’s riverfront have been rejected by Wandsworth council which will come as a relief to residents who have campaigned against the development and argued that it will “tower over” their homes The scheme includes a taller element housing private flats and a “shoulder tower” of ten storeys affordable workspace and a free-to-access community space It was recommended for refusal by planning officers due to its “excessive height and scale” The 127-page report argued that it would “represent an unacceptable and incongruous transformative change within the location that would significant harm the spatial character” After hearing the planning officers’ report and recommendation councillors at Thursday’s planning committee meeting voted unanimously to turn down the plans I can hardly believe it’s a serious application,” said Fiona Ayers commented: “The committee is responsible for the scrutiny of applications and considers the merits of an application on paper as well as the voices of residents in breach of Wandsworth’s Local Plan which sets out acceptable heights for the area.” who has campaigned against the development the Rolling Stones frontman who has a long association with Chelsea other famous names have also lent their weight to the campaign including iconic guitarist Eric Clapton and the actress Felicity Kendal Over 1,500 comments have also been submitted in support of the scheme and in response to concerns the tower’s architect has already slashed ten storeys off its height “This was the Donald Trump of planning applications - it made no sense on any level and driven by brazen avarice,” said McGibbon “Just because an architect’s computer software says that a tower can be built on a piece of land My sincere thanks goes to everyone who supported my campaign.” The developers argue that the existing site is in need of regeneration and emphasise the need for more homes to be built in order to meet the Labour party’s housing targets “Wandsworth Council has made the wrong call one that shuts the door on urgently needed homes,” said Nicholas Mee far exceeding the borough’s own affordable housing targets 11,000 people in Wandsworth are still waiting for a secure place to live 80,000 children don’t have a permanent home.” councillors raised concerns around the viability of delivering 50 per cent affordable homes Rockwell says there is “absolutely no reasonable basis to this claim” and adds that as developers they are legally bound to the affordable housing requirements in their planning permission Addressing comments about the height of the building Rockwell said that the site was an area designated for tall buildings until 2021 and claimed that currently the council’s policies do not “outright prohibit” tall buildings in the area “This scheme still has the potential to change things for the better,” added Mee “More than 1,800 residents and 100 local businesses backed it They know what this means: fewer families in temporary accommodation “The Spring Statement made it clear: housebuilding is a national priority and a route to growth Wandsworth hasn’t just turned its back on the Labour Government - it’s turned its back on the people who need help the most.” Prince Louis steals the show at VE Day parade as he keeps dad William looking sharp and mimics brother George Prince Louis steals show with sweet antics at VE parade VE Day 2025 fashion: best looks from the day VE Day 2025 fashion: Princess of Wales to Lady Victoria Starmer Royals watch historic flypast as huge crowds turns out for VE Day 80th anniversary  Royals watch historic Red Arrows flypast for VE Day 80th anniversary Stacey Solomon 'regrets doing reality show with Joe Swash' for tough reason Stacey Solomon 'regrets reality show with Joe Swash' for tough reason David Beckham’s 50th birthday bash in London 'shut down' by council over noise complaints David Beckham’s 50th birthday bash 'shut down' over noise complaints Welcome to building.co.uk. reduction Farrells' 28-storey proposals for the 1 Battersea Bridge Road site viewed from Chelsea Terry Farrell’s plans for a 28-storey mixed-use tower at the southern end of Battersea bridge have been recommended for refusal by Wandsworth council’s planning officers ahead of a committee meeting next week The planning application for the controversial Glassmill scheme at 1 Battersea Bridge road designed by Farrells for developer Rockwell is due to be decided by councillors on 24 April The tower has provoked a storm of protest from local campaign groups due to its scale and height, amassing more than 1,500 objections and nearly 5,000 signatures on a petition to scrap the plans The recommendation for refusal comes despite the scheme which was originally proposed as 39 storeys being cut down by five storeys in June last year and a further five storeys last December The two redesigns have seen the number of homes reduced by 60 and the percentage of affordable homes increased from 35% to 50%.  The scheme would now provide a total of 110 new homes down from 160 proposed in June and 170 in the original application along with 7,000 sq ft of office space and a 2,000 sq ft restaurant Farrells’ original 39-storey proposals for the tower submitted in January 2024 The amendments have failed to convince Wandsworth’s planning officers who described the tower in a 127-page report published earlier this week as presenting an “incongruous and transformative change” to an area of Battersea which is predominately low-rise which neighbours the grade II-listed Battersea bridge and the head office of Foster & Partners would be the sole high rise building in an area where buildings top out at an average of six storeys Officers concluded the building’s “excessive and dominant” height would “significantly harm the spatial character” of its prominent riverside location which is not in a designated area for tall buildings under Wandsworth’s 2023 local plan The report added that a requirement in the National Planning Policy Framework that development which is not well designed should be refused has been “engaged firmly by officers in this instance” The plans have been opposed by a roll call of local and heritage groups including Historic England which described the proposed tower as a “visually intrusive and incongruous addition to the townscape with wide reaching harmful impacts on the historic environment” Other groups which have submitted objections include the Environment Agency Wandsworth council’s conservation and heritage advisory committee the Wandsworth Society and the Putney Society has also made clear his own opposition in a series of social media posts including a post on X last June in which he said “a structure of this magnitude on this site would inflict more harm than good on the local area and its residents” The council had been due to make a decision on the scheme last month before the application was pulled from the March committee’s agenda A petition against the plans started by local campaigner Rob McGibbon has reportedly been signed by celebrities including Mick Jagger Rockwell managing director Nicholas Mee said: “An underused brownfield site could deliver 110 urgently needed new homes — with half reserved as genuinely affordable These could accommodate around 190 people in a borough where over 11,000 residents are still waiting for a place to live The proposal exceeds Wandsworth’s own targets for affordable housing Turning it down delays real solutions in favour of inaction.” Pointing to the government’s emphasis on the need for new housing in Rachel Reeves’ spring statement he added: ”The committee now faces a clear choice – to be builders or blockers It’s time to make the right decision and deliver affordable housing for Wandsworth.” The project team for 1 Battersea Bridge Road includes DP9 on planning Exterior Architecture as landscape architect Ashton Fire as fire consultant and Station Our second run report of the weekend comes from Jude Wilson who visited us from Torbay Velopark As I was in London for a meeting on Saturday afternoon it made total sense to squeeze in a parkrun in the morning and if I was to do that well why not book a hotel and go to see a show in the West End the night before Battersea is well served by public transport – we got a train from Victoria mainline station to Battersea Park – easy to tap in and tap out Then there was a 20-minute walk to the finish point where the volunteer organiser marked me off on her little list and we were led there by a volunteer carrying a sign – rather like the Pied Piper of Hamlin If you are a racing snake you will need to get to the front of this crocodile otherwise you end up someway from the start It was quite hard to hear the brief from way back but that maybe because I was listening out for the parakeets who live in the park The route itself is two circles of the park entirely on tarmac and we were encouraged to ‘Keep to the Left’ because the park was heaving with people who were not doing parkrun On the way round there were parks police vans and three officers watching us which seemed strange for a girl up from South Devon jogged and walked their way around we finished with two funnels which were efficiently managed (but of course they were!) and I think I spent only about 2-3 minutes waiting for my token It may of course have been busier if you finish a little earlier than my time but I found the scanners to the right (near the path) and the buckets to drop your tokens in to the left From in-store experiences, gifts with purchase, and so much more, discover unmissable offers from our retailers this 2025 at Battersea Power Station Look and feel radiant with savings Battersea Park on Saturdays at 9am attracting over 13,000 people since Wandsworth Council launched parkrun in October 2024 As with all the parkrun events held around the globe every week it wouldn’t be possible without the help of volunteers around 50 volunteers are needed to ensure everything runs smoothly From cheering on participants to scanning barcodes and finish tokens each role plays a crucial part in the success of parkrun and enjoyment of the participants including some where you can still take part in the parkrun love chatting with new people or are just looking for a new way to spend your Saturday morning outside volunteering at Battersea parkrun is an excellent and rewarding opportunity Sign up to volunteer at Battersea parkrun As a listening Council, we introduced parkrun to Battersea Park as part of our Wandsworth Moves Together leisure strategy the event has quickly become one of the most popular parkruns in the world over 13,000 people have participated by running including over 1,500 people completing their first-ever parkrun said: “Volunteers are the heart of Battersea parkrun making this fantastic event every Saturday morning we are committed to helping residents stay active and volunteering offers a brilliant way to be part of a supportive and welcoming community we encourage everyone to get involved and experience the many benefits of parkrun.” Most volunteer roles only require a commitment of 1 to 1.5 hours – typically from 8.30am to 10am – leaving plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day making it a fantastic opportunity for families students (including Duke of Edinburgh participants) Battersea parkrun has even welcomed visually impaired runners and wheelchair participants making it an inclusive and accessible event for all volunteering is a great way to make friends and be part of a welcoming community The benefits of Battersea parkrun extend beyond fitness Local cafés have noticed a significant increase in customers on Saturday mornings with many parkrunners and volunteers gathering for post-run coffee and breakfast The impact of parkrun has been felt not just by the runners and volunteers Volunteering at Battersea parkrun is a fun Whether you can help out once a month or every week Sign up to volunteer by visiting the Battersea Park parkrun volunteering webpage Live nearer Tooting Common? Volunteer for Tooting Common parkrun instead A big thanks to Carl Bicknell for this week's  run report at Battersea parkrun as he visited us from Clair parkrun As a parkrun tourist from Haywards Heath in West Sussex I am pursuing two goals: one is to complete my third parkrun alphabet but sorry Battersea I already have plenty of Bs The other is to complete all parkruns within a 50-mile radius of my home - there are currently 155 of them So I was very excited when Battersea parkrun opened and went onto my list (32.5 miles away if you're interested) So that is what brought me to Battersea today which was my first time back here since taking part in a corporate running event many years ago I arrived early enough for a jog around the park and introduced myself to RD Chris and VC Lucy as the volunteers and first few runners were arriving pretty perfect for us runners although chilly for the volunteers Battersea parkrun has quickly gained a reputation for being an extremely fast course and also a venue that attracts a large numbers of parkrunners I was interested in seeing how these factors would be managed in what is an already busy park the park was also setting-up to host another 5k run later in the morning prompting a parkrun course tweak around the opposite side of the bandstand from usual I could also see a Bushy-style multi-lane finish funnel Hundreds more runners had suddenly arrived and we were led in strict time expectation order along a specific route to make our way to the start line with a strict instruction to stay left at all times while running RD Chris gave the main announcements and we were counted down and sent on our way from my position with the 23-minuters it felt like an amazingly orderly start with minimal congestion Once we had turned left passing the finish line with an army of volunteers keeping us to the left the course opened out and I got into my stride the kilometres ticked by quickly and before I knew it I had completed the two laps and reached the finish area and was directed to one of the funnels Given that there were so many of us finishing at same time the funnels were managed with military precision and less than two hours later my result text arrived matching precisely my Garmin time A most enjoyable visit and most impressively organised I guess it's to be expected in the early weeks of a parkrun but a huge 659 of us - well over half the total - were first-timers here We came from near and far as you will see from the visitor board I hope those from Burgess parkrun didn't have too arduous a journey As well as domestically we had visitors from Ireland Melbourne and New Zealand; I guess you cannot get any further away than that 74 of you were taking part in your first ever parkrun parkrun is for everyone whether you choose to run but I do want to give a brief nod to the faster end of the field Battersea has been threatening a sub-15 minute parkrun for a while and today it finally happened with Raif Serif finishing in 14:57 while Vikki Wallace brought the women home in 17:47 Both times appeared in the top 10 fastest mens and womens times across the UK today but I guess that's no surprise as Battersea regularly pops up on those lists a big well done to the 184 who achieved PBs There might have been a Taylor Swift-themed 5k run in the park later but our parkrun most definitely had plenty of our own "swifties!" Congratulations to all of you who achieved milestones today Sticking to the t-shirt milestones and with apologies to anyone I might have missed: - And a fabulous 250 for Julie O'Carroll who I had the pleasure of meeting before we started Today's parkrun was made possible by 42 wonderful volunteers to whom we are are very grateful If you haven't volunteered yet please do give it a go; it is part of the overall parkrun experience and it genuinely is great fun And there are some roles that enable you to still get your run in Or in this case you can do what at least one volunteer did today: do a parkrun volunteer role Thank you everyone for a wonderful morning and congratulations to Battersea for getting what I understand has been a long-awaited parkrun off the ground with such great success A massive thank you to Neil Thrower (home parkrun of Eastbourne) for this week's fabulous run report - we hope you all enjoyed the sun SW11 Sparkles: A Sunny Morning at Battersea parkrun #23 It was my first time visiting Battersea parkrun and what an experience it was There’s always something a bit magical about discovering a new course for the first time and from the moment I stepped into the park I knew this was going to be a special morning Whether it was the wide tree-lined avenues the hustle and bustle of parkrunners warming up or the glimmer of sunlight across the nearby Thames I seem to have developed a bit of a habit for visiting parkruns beginning with the letter ‘B’ Today marked my tenth course beginning with a ‘B’ and I’m pleased to say Battersea is right up there among the very best There’s something quite satisfying about a quirky little milestone like that it was fabulous to be back in London’s SW11 Battersea Park was a regular spot for me back then more often for long walks and quiet reflection than running but returning today in the context of parkrun brought back a lot of fond memories Battersea parkrun is still relatively new to the parkrun calendar but you wouldn’t know it by the turnout or the way the event is run It already feels like a well-established part of the parkrun community the signage is clear and there’s a real sense of momentum behind the event’s growth The event continues to draw large crowds week after week whether you’re chasing a PB or taking it steady with friends Conditions today couldn’t have been better while the spring sunshine added a warm glow to the park and everything from the budding trees to the reflections on the lake in the park made for an uplifting start to the weekend Truly one of those mornings where you can’t help but smile The familiar sound of hundreds of feet hitting the path filled the air along with cheers from the sidelines and the unmistakable beep of watches being started The excitement of a parkrun start never gets old Lap 1 began with everyone settling into their rhythm weaving its way through wide open stretches and past some of the park’s most iconic features You get a real feel for the character of the space and the flat terrain helps you find your flow quickly Lap 2 is when you really start to appreciate the course With the initial nerves gone and the legs warmed up you can begin to take in your surroundings; the Victorian fountains the lake glinting in the sunlight and the subtle hum of the city in the background The volunteers positioned throughout the course were cheering enthusiastically making sure everyone felt supported and encouraged the final few hundred metres with that special mix of effort and anticipation building a friendly face handing out tokens and a shared sense of achievement in the air event number 23 was officially wrapped up at Battersea parkrun I’ve had this course on my radar for some time Battersea Park has always been a gem in London’s green spaces and now it has a parkrun that does it proud This is a superbly organised event and credit must go to the core team and volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly barcode scanning and post-event close down care and a clear passion for what parkrun stands for helping to lift every runner as we made our way around the course these hi-vis heroes show up and parkrun simply wouldn’t happen without them A massive thank you to each and every one of them This is an excellent course and one that I thoroughly enjoyed visiting today I’ll definitely be recommending it to others Congratulations to everyone who took part today—whether you walked Have fantastic weekends everyone and whatever your plans I hope they include more happy miles and friendly smiles Until next time - see you at another start line soon Diptyque is a creator of evocative perfumes for the self and the home scented skincare products and desirable decorative
