National Highways has issued an update regarding the ongoing temporary traffic lights in place on the A49 at Bayston Hill
a serious incident involving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) occurred
resulting in significant damage to a nearby home and a pub
Due to the severity of the damage and concerns for public safety
National Highways has implemented the closure of the nearby footpath and the closure of one lane of the A49 nearest to the damaged buildings
Temporary traffic lights have been installed to manage traffic flow
These measures have inevitably led to significant congestion and delays for road users which National Highways acknowledges
National Highways say the traffic lights will remain in place until necessary remedial work is completed to stabilise the damaged structures
National Highways recommends the following alternative routes:
M50Cross-border Journeys (North Shropshire): A483
A488/A489Cross-border Journeys (South Shropshire): A489Ongoing Updates
National Highways say they are closely monitoring the situation and working with emergency services and Shropshire Council to expedite the necessary repairs
Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance
and consider alternative routes to avoid delays and potential disruption

A housing developer has been accused of being “misleading and unethical” after setting up an automated form to generate support for a 114-home development on the edge of Shrewsbury
A housing developer has been accused of being “misleading and unethical” after setting up an automated form to generate support for a 114-home development on the edge of Shrewsbury
Redrow Homes wants to build on land west of Lyth Hill Road in Bayston Hill
however residents are concerned about the loss of green space
extra strain on schools and doctors and the development’s proximity to the “dangerous” A49
The firm has its own website for the Bayston Hill housing estate plans, which includes a slick and quick Shropshire Council planning portal comment generator
which is much more user friendly than the council’s own system for collecting comments
It asks people for a few personal details and gives multiple choice options as to why they support the proposal
including “it would help meet housing need in Shropshire” and “I would be interested in living there”
The system has generated several duplicate responses in support of the plans
many people who do not support the plans have lodged copied and pasted comments objecting to the plans
National Highways has said it will look to implement additional safety measures including new signage and to clear vegetation along the A49 after a meeting over the road's safety
The parish council said the working group, which was created more than a year ago, was already investigating measures to make it safer for residents, and ramped up calls for change following the devastating incident
Members of the parish council met with staff from National Highways and an officer from Shrewsbury Police to relay concerns from residents including speeding and safety
Joseph Walmsley said: "We monitor safety on all our roads but have increased scrutiny of the A49 following the collision which has required temporary traffic management to protect road users
"We also value input from people living and using our roads and had a very positive meeting with the parish council and our police partners
As a result we will be looking at some additional safety measures such as new signage and vegetation clearance
"We await the results of the police investigation to see if any further actions are required."
Last week, Black Country Ales revealed its plans for the pub which it had acquired just a few days before the crash
said: "We were very pleased that staff from National Highways and an officer from Shrewsbury Police were happy to meet with us so soon after our request
We were able to relay all the many concerns residents have over delays
Councillor Mark Underwood added: "We were able to collate all of our concerns and we were heartened that they already understood our frustrations and are acting on them
The recent crash has really brought home the dangers of the A49 which literally cuts Bayston Hill in half
We now hope to see measures taken by all agencies to improve safety for everyone."
A primary school in a village near Shrewsbury has received glowing praise in its latest Ofsted report
In its first ungraded inspection since Ofsted judged the predecessor school to be 'Good' in May 2016, Ofsted inspectors returned to Oakmeadow Church of England Primary and Nursery School in Bayston Hill
gave glowing praise to the school and its pupils - who inspectors said were "delightful" during their visit in mid-December
"This lovely school sits firmly at the heart of its community," the report states
"Pupils respond wonderfully to the school’s high expectations of them
This is evident in pupils’ high attendance and their positive conduct
Pupils know how to behave and get along very well with one another
Proposals to improve road safety near Shrewsbury have been put forward
At a recent Bayston Hill Parish Council meeting
Councillor Clare Shaw presented a number of ideas that the Road Safety Working Group has come up with
a recommendation has been made for a mobile speed enforcement van to be placed in the Compasses layby or a larger layby towards the Condover junction
like the ones used further down the trunk road in Dorrington
The alternatives are for an average speed check camera and signs
Other recommendations include having a second crossing by the Compasses Inn pub
particularly between Burgs Lane and The Common
and adding elderly/children crossing signs along the A49
The comments will now be sent to the officers currently working on the A49
the main priority according to the working group is to have one placed on the downhill carriageway of Lyth Hill Road
Other options include having one on the A49 if National Highways does not instigate other speed enforcements
and a new 20mph sign outside Oakmeadow CofE Primary School at set times
The clerk has been tasked to bring three quotes to full council for selection and approval
recommendations have also been made for the following roads:
Have a stop sign at the top of Pulley Lane to join the junction
Alternative is to repaint the main roundabout circle as it’s currently worn
Proposal to make a 20mph protection zone around the school
with signage and flashing school zone signs
Proposal to extend and increase the double yellow lines around Lansdowne Road by the Oakmeadow School entrance and around the top of Green Lane
Proposal to extend the zigzags around the school
Proposal of a new zebra crossing at the school entrance
Proposal to extend double yellow lines around the Cornwall Drive junction
it’s a blind junction due to parked cars and dangerous for those exiting Cornwall Drive
Proposal to write to the nursery highlighting again the issues regarding parents speeding up and down Lyth Hill Road at pick-up and drop-off times
as picked up during local community speed watch
Mention again the need for a stop line at the junction with Lythwood Road
A meeting will now be requested with Shropshire Council’s highways departments to consider the recommendations
Traffic lights which have been a fixture on the A49 for three months will be removed next week
Restrictions were put in place on the A49 at Bayston Hill after a lorry ploughed into two buildings in November
The crash caused major damage to both the Three Fishes Pub and the Hong Kong City takeaway
The pub had only been bought by Black Country Ales a matter of days before
which is responsible for the management of the road
said that work has been taking place this week to allow the traffic lights to be removed
National Highways Route Manager Joseph Walmsley said they will be removed 'early next week'
He thanked the public for their patience during the disruption
He said: "Utility company works have been taking place this week
we are now carrying out work to replace the pedestrian guard rail and once completed
the temporary traffic signals will be removed early next week
“The temporary lights have been in place since November
while third party works were carried out on the damaged buildings
and we thank people for their patience while this work has taken place.”
Bayston Hill residents are “horrified and devastated” after fields in their village were fenced off
with fears rife that a planning application for new homes is imminent
The Glebelands in Bayston Hill

working in partnership with One Public Estate
has secured £334,500 from the Government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund to develop on the land

There are an additional two properties being made available to the Private Rented Sector (PRS)

“As well as revitalising a long-term derelict brownfield site The Oaklands is bringing much needed affordable
quality homes to the county and supporting the local economy and we are delighted to see the construction completed at the development
we are committed to addressing the housing shortage by building sustainable homes across the county and improving the lives of the local residents.”
town councillors and officers were invited to tour the development and to view the homes available
a local Shropshire Councillor for Bayston Hill
“It has been exciting watching construction at The Oaklands
especially as the site had been derelict for so many years
“It is clear there is interest in the homes and they are a valuable addition to the village community in Bayston Hill
I am sure all the new residents will enjoy living here.”
Shropshire Council Cabinet member for growth and regeneration
“It is important that we bring forward more affordable houses to sustain our local towns and villages and that local people have the opportunity to set up home in their own communities
is an excellent example of Shropshire Council’s initiative to help regenerate and sustain communities and will help to support people to be able to live close to their families and friends
“Cornovii Developments’ pledge to provide competitively priced homes for local families will achieve its goal in Bayston Hill and offering these homes to people with a local connection to the area is a most welcome opportunity for families to set up their own home within the heart of our community.”

A housing developer has asked to meet residents over controversial plans for 114 homes close to the "dangerous" A49
More than 200 objections have been lodged against a Redrow Homes scheme to build on land west of Lyth Hill Road in Bayston Hill
with the loss of green space another concern of residents
as well as poor communication about the plans from the developer
Redrow defended its consultation process as "meaningful and informative," however now they are asking residents to attend a meeting for further talks
A Bayston Hill Parish Council spokesman said: "The parish council has been approached by the developers for 'an opportunity for Redrow's project team to meet councillors to discuss the plans in more detail and to discuss the concerns of the councillors'
"We have added and additional full council meeting on November 4 and the meeting will entirely take place in public
"There is an opportunity on the agenda for members of the public to speak
We would ask though that if you do wish to speak
contact the clerk to make the organisation of the evening easier."
The meeting will take place at 7.15pm at Christ Church
Anyone wishing to speak can contact the parish council clerk on 01743 874651 or clerk@baystonhillparishcouncil.org.uk
The proposal comprises of 17 five-bed homes
Planning applications have previously been lodged to build homes on the land
and an application for 106 homes on the site was submitted in November 2022 but withdrawn in February last year
said: "Our village cannot cope with a huge development and this will have such a negative impact to the local community
Not only will there be a loss of agricultural land and beautiful countryside but also the felling of a magnificent oak tree and the loss of habitat for wildlife and future generations
"The bus services is not reliable and therefore people will use cars which as a minimum would be an additional 118 cars travelling through the village
This would have a massive impact on our village road infrastructure with subsequent noise and pollution increasing
"The paths in the village are narrow and we already experience issues crossing roads and traffic passing very close
an increase in cars would exasperate this especially for the elderly and young children
The quickest route for cars to leave the village from this development would be onto the A49
causing longer queues and add to the current major concerns regarding the volume of traffic on the A49 and speeding issues
"To agree to this would be devastating to the village please do not think of money but of people's lives."
Mrs Charlene Northwood said: "The village is in an area of outstanding beauty and if these new house are built they will be an eyesore
"The village roads are already struggling with increased volumes of traffic and these new houses would make it worse
"The schools and doctors are already struggling
more houses would add to the ever growing problem
"Bayston Hill does not need or want any new property development."

Beer drinkers in Shropshire have pledged their support for the pub that was partly destroyed in a crash earlier this week
A spokesperson for the company said: “Following the recent excitement of announcing our acquisition of the Three Fishes pub in Bayston Hill
we are saddened to report an unfortunate incident where a lorry collided with the building
An update from a pub that was partly destroyed by a lorry has labelled the financial cost and headache of the crash as "devastating"
Emergency services were called to the A49 in Bayston Hill at around 5.30am on Monday morning after a Chilton Bulk Transport lorry smashed through two buildings
A lorry driver was cut free from the HGV that collided with the corner of the home next to Hong Kong City Chinese takeaway and into the side of the Three Fishes pub
The incident occurred less than a week after Black Country Ales announced the acquisition of the Three Fishes pub
The pub confirmed that the property is in the hands of structural engineers
The post said: "The pub is in the hands of structural engineers while they work out the best way to secure the building
no one is allowed in the premises at this time
"I am in the process of contacting my insurance to make claims but this is going to take a long time due to the access issues on top of the fact I am leaving the pub. I have had no updates on the driver and only seen the same posts as everyone else but I wish him a speedy recovery
"The financial cost and the headache this has created for my family and those at Hong Kong City is absolutely devastating and will continue until the insurance can proceed
"Thank you to everyone who attended the scene and checked on all involved
to all the friends who have reached out to make sure me and my family are safe and to all the emergency teams involved who were professional and sympathetic
"Also thank you to all that have donated to the JustGiving page for Hong Kong City to support them and their family."
A vital Shropshire A-road has re-opened in Shropshire following a lorry crash at Bayston Hill

An amateur dramatics group have raised hundreds of pounds for an Alzheimer’s charity after performing a play about the disease
Bayston Hill Amateur Dramatic Society has presented a cheque for £352 to Alzheimer's Research UK
It comes after the group recently performed Living With AL
a play written by Shrewsbury playwright Victoria Ireland after the death of her father
The unique factor in her radio play is that Alzheimer's is personified as the character 'Al'
no one else could – which cleverly mirrors the dilemma of Alzheimer's patients and their families in real life
The play was recorded by 12 actors who discovered they had all lost loved-ones to the condition
produced by former BBC Radio 4 producer Chris Eldon Lee
has since been heard in more than a dozen countries around the world
The money raised will go towards research aimed at understanding and fighting the disease
the players are preparing to present Alan Ayckbourn's comedy 'Confusions' at Bayston Hill Village Hall from May 15 to 17
Transport bosses have visited the site where a lorry crashed through a pub and a building next to a takeaway to discuss safety measures
The Bayston Hill community was in shock on Monday morning after the HGV ploughed through the Three Fishes pub and a building next to Hong Kong City takeaway
leaving huge holes in the brickwork in a trail of destruction
The lorry driver broke his leg in the incident
the family from the takeaway "lost everything"
prompting a fundraiser to be set up for them - it has raised more than £4,300 so far
And the crash has caused a headache for Black Country Ales
who only bought the pub a matter of days before the crash
Now transport leaders have visited the site of the collision to see it for themselves, and discuss safety concerns with the local community, who this week told the Shropshire Star: "We've said for years that this will happen."
Shrewsbury's Labour MP Julia Buckley said: "I welcomed Victoria Lazenby
Telford and Wrekin at National Highways to Bayston Hill
and myself about the accident that occurred on the A49 at Hereford Road this week that damaged Hong Kong City and The Three Fishes
"We spoke about the current diversions in place and next steps
"I have suggested conducting a traffic survey in Bayston Hill to gather residents’ feedback on traffic issues and the possibility of installing additional 30mph signs
"National Highways will outline their action plan for addressing traffic and safety issues once investigations have been completed."
A lorry driver has been cut free by firefighters after "breaking his leg" after his vehicle hit a pub
The HGV collided with the Three Fishes pub and a building next to Hong Kong City takeaway next door on the A49 at Bayston Hill
Huge chunks of brickwork have been torn through and large holes in the buildings left behind

while Three Fishes bosses have confirmed it will be closed for the "foreseeable future"
National Highways West Widlands posted on X just before 6.30am today saying traffic was being held on the A49 southbound between the A5 and A5112 at Dobbies Island
Shropshire Council posted just after midday that the road is expected to remain closed into the afternoon
the council said its highways and structural engineer teams were also supporting the response
Pictures taken by the Shropshire Star show the devastation left behind
Three Fishes bosses said: "So as you're already aware a catastrophic accident has happened at the Three Fishes this morning
It has caused severe structural damage to the premises
The pub will be closed for the foreseeable future
Will post again in the coming week but trying to process everything right now."
The lorry belongs to Chilton Bulk Transport based in Abertillery
Boss Steven Chilton told the Shropshire Star the driver broke his leg in the collision and the lorry was carrying a load of glass from South Wales to North Wales
"The last I heard was that he'd broken his leg
I'm waiting for an update from the hospital," he said
"This is the first time we've had anything like this happen so it's a bit of a shock to the system
"I don't think this driver has ever had an accident working for us
The firm has been running for around 15 years
Asked how much the collision is likely to cost the company
Mr Chilton said: "I don't want to think about that
police and paramedics have been called to the scene
"A lorry has left the carriageway and hit a building
"@OPUHereford & @HWFireControl are in attendance
A Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "At 5.29am on Monday
SFRS Fire Control received a call reporting that a road traffic collision had taken place in Shrewsbury
"One lorry in collision with two buildings

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called to reports of a lorry that had crashed into a building on Hereford Road
two paramedic officers and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care car from Cosford to the scene
who they treated for potentially serious injuries and conveyed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further treatment.”
As pubs continue to battle the cost of living crisis
the Shropshire Star continues its Love Your Local series which celebrates our local inns
Within small communities and villages outside of big towns and cities
a pub can be more than just a place to get a pint
a place for people to meet up and chat and see friends
as well as a vital hub for entertainment and the night time economy of the village
One pub which is a good example of this is the Beeches in Bayston Hill, a village situated three miles to the south of Shrewsbury and which has expanded over the years to have a bigger population than Shropshire towns such as Church Stretton and Pontesbury
Built in 1965 by the Wolverhampton and Dudley Brewery
the Beeches was built for the working class community of the village and designed to be a place where people could go for a drink after work
the ownership of the pub has changed hands and now sits as a Marston's pub and is currently managed and run by Ben Adams since September
Mr Adams had previously been the manager of the Bull's Head in Shrewsbury town centre and said that while he enjoyed running that pub
he wanted to run a pub that was more community-focussed
He said: "The Bull was great and very wet-led and most of the clientèle were passing trade who were calling in off their trains
doing what they were doing and then moving on
Extra safety measures are to be put on the A49 in Bayston Hill after a lorry crashed into a pub and takeaway
Temporary lights have been in place at the busy stretch of road near Shrewsbury following the incident that happened last November
Both the Three Fishes Pub and the adjacent Hong Kong City takeaway were damaged from the crash
with the pub set to be partially demolished
Bayston Hill Parish Council’s Road Safety Working Group recently met with National Highways and an officer from West Mercia Police to highlight concerns people have about delays
unsuitable shortcuts and safety that have been caused by the temporary lights
“We were able to collate all of our concerns and we were heartened that they already understood our frustrations and are acting on them,” said Councillor Mark Underwood
“The recent crash has really brought home the dangers of the A49 which literally cuts Bayston Hill in half
We now hope to see measures taken by all agencies to improve safety for everyone.”
added: “We monitor safety on all our roads but have increased scrutiny of the A49 following the collision which has required temporary traffic management to protect road users
“We also value input from people living and using our roads and had a very positive meeting with the parish council and our police partners
we will be looking at some additional safety measures such as new signage and vegetation clearance
We await the results of the police investigation to see if any further actions are required.”
An overhead power line has been knocked down by a lorry on an A road diversion route hours after a different lorry crashed into a pub
Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service was called on Monday afternoon to Pulley Lane, in Bayston Hill, on the A49 near Shrewsbury
The incident is just hours after a crash where a pub and a takeaway were crashed into by a lorry in the village
A spokesperson for the fire service said a fire engine from Shrewsbury was scrambled to the scene
The said there has been a report of an overhead power line being knocked down by a lorry
A spokesperson for the fire service later said that an "electricity cable was pulled from power box by passing vehicle
"Fire Service personnel cordoned off the area and incident left with National Grid
A power cut had also been reported in the area affecting up to 28 customers with an estimated restoration time of 10pm
National Grid says that the reason for outage is third party damage to the network
Highways officials say they are checking for issues with temporary traffic lights on one of the county's busiest roads
Temporary traffic lights have been in place on the A49 at Bayston Hill south of Shrewsbury since last November
The lights have been required after a lorry ploughed into the Hong Kong City Chinese takeaway and the Three Fishes pub - causing huge damage
Although delays are expected due to the lights
drivers have reported issues with the signals being stuck on red
The route was backed up this morning - Monday
with drivers reporting issues with the lights not changing
Delays this morning were compounded by a crash on the A5 between Dobbies and Emstrey
Now National Highways has confirmed it is checking if there are issues with the lights - and said they will be monitoring how they are performing
National Highways Route Manager
said: “We are investigating issues with the temporary traffic lights and will replace any equipment if necessary
we are closely monitoring performance of the signals to avoid further disruption.”

A pub which was badly damaged by a lorry is set to be rebuilt
The Three Fishes in Bayston Hill near Shrewsbury was hit by a lorry on Monday
after the vehicle careered off the A49 and into the side of the building
The crash caused major damage to the building
It came only a matter of days after the popular Black Country Ales bought the premises
West Midlands pub company and micro brewer Black Country Ales has announced the purchase of a Shropshire pub as part of its expanding portfolio
The Three Fishes located on Hereford Road in Bayston Hill will become part of the Dudley based pub chain
who already operates several other establishments in Shropshire including The Anvil in Shifnal and The Harp in Albrighton
Black Country Ales celebrated its 25th anniversary this year
having started in 1999 with the purchase of the Old Bulls Head Inn in Gornal
"Black Country Ales is pleased to announce the acquisition of our latest pub
"This cherished pub will continue to serve the local community under our stewardship
with minor renovations scheduled for early 2025 to enhance the space while honouring its character
"We look forward to maintaining its proud tradition and welcoming all patrons both new and returning."
The prominent 0.3 acre pub site on the edge of Bayston Hill
had gone on the market earlier with commercial estate agents this year with a price tag of £275,000
Black Country Ales operates over 50 pubs in the West Midlands
and also operates a micro-brewery from it's Old Bulls Head premises in Gornal near Wolverhampton
The company started brewing its own ales in 2004
having discovered brewing equipment in one of the pub's outbuilding after the purchase
A Shrewsbury family has “lost everything” after a lorry crashed into their home this morning
A house next door to Hong Kong City, a Chinese takeaway in Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury
which took out a huge chunk of brickwork and left a gaping hole behind
The vehicle also crashed into the Three Fishes pub next door
The driver had to be cut free from the lorry and suffered a broken leg, according to his boss at Chilton Bulk Transport
Now a JustGiving page has been set up for the family running the Chinese by Chloe Broxton
who said the house and takeaway have been “condemned”
“I'm raising £750 to help support a family that has been devastated by an accident that has condemned both their home and their business,” she said
“There was an accident involving a lorry on the A49 on the 11/11/2024
which caused this busy stretch of road to be closed to a prolonged period of time due to damage
“The lorry hit the home and business of a family
“The house and Chinese takeaway (Hong Kong City) have been condemned
which they use to independently support themselves and four children
“This is a devastating and traumatic time for the family and I feel that some financial help during this time
while finances and insurances are being worked out would really be helpful for this family who have lost everything.”

The lives of little Hallie-Mae Formstone and her Shropshire family were turned upside down last month
The four-year-old, from Bayston Hill, was suddenly diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and immediately transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital to commence intensive treatment
Hallie-Mae will remain at the hospital for a minimum of six months and is undergoing a lengthy regime of chemotherapy
before an anticipated stem cell transplant
Her parents Sophie and Aaron Formstone are remaining at the hospital providing around the clock to support their daughter
and have been overwhelmed by the bravery that she has shown during recent weeks
"Hallie-Mae’s diagnosis has hit us all like a sledgehammer
it came completely out of the blue and we have been catapulted into unknown territory and a great deal of uncertainty," mum Sophie said
perseverance and sheer determination that Hallie-Mae is demonstrating is unbelievable
"We know that we have difficult days ahead
but we will be with her every step of the way to support her fight
Her positivity is infectious and we have been immensely touched by the number of people who are supporting us in so many ways."
Hallie-Mae has experienced several side effects from her chemotherapy treatment
Spearheaded by the four-year-old's aunty, Hayley Formstone, a fundraising campaign has been launched to support the family while Hallie-Mae battles to overcome the cancer of the blood and bone marrow
The campaign is aiming to provide relief and some financial stability for the family over the coming months
Funds will go towards paying the family’s mortgage
bills and travel costs during Hallie-Mae’s treatment
who have recently undergone blood tests to see whether they are a potential bone marrow match for their little sister
any remaining funds will be donated to one of the charities that has supported the family during Hallie-Mae’s illness
The campaign has already raised more £9,000
Hayley Formstone said: "We know times are hard for everyone
will make a huge contribution to lessening the burden the family are now facing
"Every little bit helps and all the support we're receiving means the world to us
prayers and generosity as we navigate through this difficult chapter
This is helping us keep our family strong when we need it most."
The family are keeping their fingers crossed that Hallie-Mae will soon be able to return home to Shropshire for a few days
but this will depend on her condition and the stability of her blood levels following her first cycle of chemotherapy
A charity football match has been organised by the former manager of Bayston Hill FC
December 28 at 11am at the Lythwood Sports Complex in Bayston Hill
a raffle and a 'brave the shave' at the local youth club following the match

A church district which owns a village green says it has been “forced” to fence it off to the public
amid fears a controversial plan to build houses there may loom
had to “unexpectedly” shut the fields off due to “two events which forced it to protect its interests”
Residents hit out this week
saying they were “horrified and devastated” at the move
which villagers have used for generations for walks
football games and community events such as the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
was subject of a joint plan between Shingler Homes and the landowner last year to build homes
After a huge groundswell of community opposition which included 230 objections on the planning application
the proposal was withdrawn within a couple of months
Villagers embroiled in a war over their local green with a church district have hand-delivered a 2,000-signature petition calling for the land to be “saved”
Residents of Bayston Hill in Shrewsbury said they were “horrified and devastated” when The Glebelands was fenced off by landowners
They expressed fear over the possibility of homes being built on the site and sadness over the loss of access for the first time in 75 years
Now a campaign group made up of villagers called Friends of The Glebelands have been to the Lichfield Diocese Board of Finance to try and get their message across
and plead for the green to be reopened to the public
In a letter they said: “We have travelled to Lichfield today from Bayston Hill to deliver this petition in the hope that villagers’s concerns and hopes may finally be heard and acknowledged
“Bayston Hill is a large village south of Shrewsbury in the Diocese of Lichfield with a population of 5,200 residents
Many of the houses in the village have been built on land that was gifted to the Diocese of Lichfield and subsequently sold to developers
and The Glebelands is the last remaining area of green space at the centre of the village
Generations of villagers have cherished the use of the Glebelands for a broad range of activities: community events
headquarters for the village’s Scouts and Guides (who only last month were forced to leave their premises at the edge of The Glebelands)
and any of the other activities that people routinely use a large green space at the heart of their community for
“The Glebelands is perfectly positioned at the heart of our busy village
allowing residents from all four corners of our village to come together in a safe
fences were erected at each entry point to the Glebelands
ending the long-standing enjoyment of the Glebelands by generations of villagers
The community feels a profound sense of loss
“The Friends of the Glebe was formed by a small group of village residents
Our aim is to protect this small area of glebe land at the centre of the village from being used for development and to preserve it as the last green space in the centre of the village for the benefit of the residents of Bayston Hill
“The Friends of the Glebe started this petition when the fences were erected
and to date over 2,000 people have signed our petition
“We hope that this gives a sense of the scale of sadness that villagers feel for the loss of the green heart of their village
The Glebelands has always been a symbol of our village’s unity and shared values
we kindly ask you to remove the fencing to restore the village’s cherished green space.”
A Lichfield Diocese Board of Finance spokesman told the Shropshire Star that the fencing had been put up after two unspecified “events”
and that the board had “been forced” to do so to “protect its interests”
A joint planning application for homes submitted by the church district and Shingler Homes was submitted in 2023 for The Glebelands
but was swiftly withdrawn after a groundswell of opposition including more than 230 objections
No application for building on the land is currently live on the Shropshire Council planning portal
The petition can be viewed at hchange.org/p/save-the-glebelands
The number 435 bus provides a 'lifeline' for communities between Shrewsbury and Ludlow but its future has been thrown into doubt by delays on the A49 following a crash at Bayston Hill
A lorry crashed into the Three Fishes pub and the Hong Kong Chinese takeaway next door last week and a set of traffic lights has been causing long delays ever since
and Ludlow councillor Andy Boddingon want to make sure the service stays and get the road open as soon as possible

Construction is complete at a 23-home development on the site of a former primary school
Cornovii Developments Limited, Shropshire Council’s wholly-owned housebuilding company, says construction is complete at The Oaklands, its 23-home development on the former Oakland Primary School site in Bayston Hill
The company bought the site last year, 14 years after the school was vacated
Shropshire Council secured £334,500 from the Government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund to develop the land
town councillors and officers were invited to tour the development and view the homes
He said: “It has been exciting watching construction at The Oaklands
I am sure all the new residents will enjoy living here.”
said: “It is important that we bring forward more affordable houses to sustain our local towns and villages and that local people have the opportunity to set up home in their own communities
“Cornovii Developments’ pledge to provide competitively priced homes for local families will achieve its goal in Bayston Hill and offering these homes to people with a local connection to the area is a most welcome opportunity for families to set up their own home within the heart of our community.”
The Oaklands is comprised of two one-bedroom bungalows
electric vehicle charging points and air source heat pumps
said: “As well as revitalising a long-term derelict brownfield site The Oaklands is bringing much-needed affordable
There are five properties left for sale on the development

A pair of futuristic homes earmarked for a former railway siding in the Shropshire countryside will go ahead – despite council officers saying they were not “innovative” enough
The two large residences earmarked for land at Redhill, near Bayston Hill, had been recommended for refusal by council planners on the grounds that they were not sufficiently “outstanding or innovative” to justify being built on land classed as open countryside.
Under Government planning rules, residential development should not be built in the open countryside unless certain exceptional circumstances apply – one of which is that the scheme is of sufficient quality to “raise the standard” of rural home design.
Shropshire Council planning officers were not convinced by the proposal put forward by applicant Jack and John Gwilliam, but the council's planning committee disagreed, and approved the scheme.
“[National planning policy] is clear that planning decisions should avoid the development of isolated homes in the countryside unless certain circumstances apply, one of which is that the design is of exceptional quality, truly outstanding, reflecting the highest standards in architecture and would help to raise standards of design more generally in rural areas,” said a report by the council’s planning team.
