Angus Beith praised the controlled performance of his Hearts B side as they beat Broxburn Athletic 3-0 in their final game of the season at Albyn Park on Saturday The Wee Jambos scored three goals in the second half Speaking to the Official Hearts Website at full-time “We actually didn't start amazingly in the first 10 minutes but from then on we performed really well and competed brilliantly “We asked the boys before the start of the game to make sure they nailed the fundamentals that’s the key when you come away from home We did that and we played with real confidence today.”  Broxburn striker Errol Douglas was sent off just before half-time which reduced the hosts to 10 men but Beith said his side’s performance in the second 45 merited the three points but we were the one in the team in the ascendancy and the one creating the opportunities and went about it quite maturely in the second-half and punished them as well when we created our opportunities Beith explained that his defence was crucial in helping to control the game for the Jambos: “What was key was the centre halves use of the ball because they had a lot of time in possession I said to them at half time to make sure they stay concentrated So they controlled that really well for us and made good decisions “We then managed to get it to our players at the top end of the pitch on the ball in good positions.”  The manager was pleased with Gus Stevenson’s performance and the overall attacking display from his side always looking for the ball and was looking to disrupt and cause problems for them along the corner as well It was really good for Dom (Plank) to get his goal today as well “Gus is a threat running in behind but also receiving the ball in between the lines So I thought his partnership with Alfie Osborne worked really well today It's probably the best game that I've seen him have for the B team Beith believes that marking the end of the campaign with a victory will help Hearts B build into next season:  I said to them at half-time that sometimes you come away from home but unsure if you know that you can play the same football you want to we were really confident on the ball in tight spaces on the pitch “So I think that in itself gives us confidence going into next year that we can come to these away grounds that are tough places to play at times © Copyright 2016 - 2025 Team matters in recent weeks following previous Head Coach Liam Fox’s move to the first-team coaching staff becomes the side’s Head Coach on a permanent basis 28-year-old Angus is a product of the Hearts Football Academy A standout at youth level and capped for Scotland U19s he made his senior debut for the Jambos in 2014 before enjoying loan spells in Leagues One and Two Following a move to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2018 Angus was forced to retire from his playing career at the age of 23 due to a hip injury He cut his coaching teeth with younger age groups at Oriam and at the club’s Balerno Performance School while studying for a degree with the Open University Angus became B Team assistant coach this summer and formed part of the first team’s interim management team prior to Neil Critchley’s appointment He now takes the reins of the B Team as Head Coach with the side currently sitting just below mid table in the Lowland League Angus said; “I’m very pleased to be given the honour and opportunity to lead the B Team “I have a good relationship with the squad having coached many of them at youth level and that familiarity has only heightened after working closely with them this season “I feel well-placed to know what it takes to make the transition from youth sides into the first team having made that same journey myself as a young player “My focus now is helping these players to reach their potential and I will put everything into it.” B Team head coach Angus Beith was impressed with the controlled performance of his Hearts B side as they defeated East Stirlingshire 2-1 at Falkirk Stadium on Saturday The Wee Jambos sealed the victory over The Shire with goals from Henry James and Mackenzie Ross In the opening 10 minutes we had a good intent about us out of possession we got after them and played the game in their half “Then we just got caught with a couple of channel balls and crosses in the box that we could have dealt with a bit better But by and large I think we controlled the game first half we passed it well and created some really good chances “In the second half we dealt much better with those channel balls which meant we had even more control of the game I was disappointed to concede one at the end but overall I’m really happy with the performance Beith was pleased with the performances of Henry James and Mackenzie Ross who have both scored in their last two games for Hearts B He spoke about their development this season: “It's been a challenge for Henry because he's had to move up to the left hand side when he's been playing left back pretty much all season He’s coped with that really well and he's obviously managed to get two goals as well specifically improving his movements and link play with the number 10 and the wide players At the moment he's getting loads of rewards off the back of that and obviously a great finish for his goal today The manager looks ahead to next Tuesday’s fixture against Broomhill with his side hitting form in recent weeks “The two wins in a row have been brilliant for confidence but the most important thing for me is the performance levels of the group I think the intent and the aggression right from the start today was really good and it’s probably one of the best games that we've had in possession Certainly from building out from the back up to the last third “We could have scored more goals today which is frustrating but in terms of how well we kept and moved the ball and competed off the ball as well was pleasing so hopefully we can take that into Tuesday.”  Heart of Midlothian is delighted to announce the appointment of Angus Beith as Hearts B team assistant coach aged 9 and after progressing through the age groups in a Challenge Cup match against Livingston Beith enjoyed two loan spells at Stirling Albion as well as time at Stenhousemuir and Stranraer before departing for Inverness on a permanent deal in 2018 Beith’s career was cut tragically short due to a recurring hip injury and with three operations unable to provide a permanent fix he was forced into early retirement aged just 23 Angus immediately began his coaching journey with an Open University degree Angus developed as a coach at Riccarton and after a successful spell working at the Balerno Performance School he has now been appointed as Liam Fox’s assistant as the Wee Jambos head into another exciting campaign in the Lowland League “I’m absolutely delighted to have Angus working with us We’re trying to create a positive culture and environment that allows the players to feel comfortable and that is something Angus will definitely add to but he’s also experienced that journey first-hand progressing into that first-team environment and making his debut for the club His experiences will be brilliant for the kids to learn from “He also has those relationships already in place with the majority of the kids from his time working in the academy and leading the school performance programme at Balerno “We are constantly looking at ways to keep improving the youngsters and with a different voice coming on board in Angus in terms of maximising their output in training every day “I have already seen the huge drive that Angus has to not only be the best coach he can be but also to improve the players and help them during their careers.” Angus Beith admits he’s proud of his young Hearts side after they rolled up their sleeves to grind out a 2-1 victory over Berwick Rangers on Saturday The Wee Jambos were excellent in the first half at Shielfield Park and found themselves two goals to the good at the break Berwick pulled a goal back and piled the pressure on but some good defending from the men in maroon and goalkeeping from Jack Lyon was enough to see the three points return to Edinburgh It's a big part of being a football player and it's what the fans at Tynecastle expect of you They expect you to be able to show that grit and determination when momentum is against you in the game It's a major quality to have in football so it's good to see they're developing those traits both individually and as a team I said to the boys at full-time that the feeling and togetherness that we have at the moment is showing on the pitch and it's helping us in these tough moments in the game "I'm not sure if we win that game three or four weeks ago We're in a really good spot in terms of defending our box but that grit and determination to see out games is there and that's a brilliant trait to have "In the first half we had lots of opportunities to get in behind them and we had most of the ball and controlled the game made themselves more compact in the middle and were more direct We struggled to flip the momentum of that and in the second half we spent a lot of time defending our box and set pieces but the disappointment is probably being able to flip the momentum a bit more either by getting in behind them more or through having sustained periods of pressure which I think we did too many times in the second half.” Berwick were holding a high line which meant Hearts’ holding midfielder were making runs from deep typified by Ryan Duncan’s chance towards the end of the first half which stopper Callum Antell did well to tip onto the bar Beith admits it wasn’t anything that’d necessarily been worked on but was pleased that his players were able to spot the opportunities and execute the passes in runs in the opening 45 "It was more just the state of the game,” he continued “Their back four were really high and they weren't putting a lot of pressure on the ball so it gave us the opportunity for those deeper guys to cause them problems and make runs rather than the striker or the wide guys "Those diagonal passes and straight runs from the midfield players or whoever found themselves in those positions We've been working on those opposite movements at the top end of the pitch but with the way it played out today it was those deeper runs that were going to hurt them today and that ended up being the case "It was a great bit of movement from Bobby for the first goal it was a similar one for Dom's with that late run and we almost had a third with Ryan Duncan We executed it really well at the times in the first half but I think we just let ourselves down a wee bit in the second half but the execution of the pass and the runs let us down a wee bit and that didn't allow us to get up the park as much.” Angus Beith admits he’s honoured to have been appointed head coach of Hearts B and says he’ll give it his all to get as many players into the first team as possible The 28-year-old has taken over following Liam Fox’s move into the first team coaching setup but having been involved at various age groups within the Hearts Academy as well as the club’s Balerno Performance School Beith already holds a strong knowledge on many of his players “I am very honoured to be given this opportunity It's a really important position in the club and I'm ready to give it my all the club feel that I'm the person to go and take that position on having worked with Foxy for the last four months so closely developed a really good relationship with him watched his work and his level of work and the detail that he puts in every day I think it's really helped me and put me in a better place to be able to do this role at a good level delighted to get the opportunity and I'm really excited to try and help every single one of these players get into the first team I've got a great relationship with David and Lee at 18s I know a lot of the guys in the academy as well so the ones that are coming through into the 18s as well there's a really good relationship between myself and Foxy and the manager and Mick have been great as well “It feels like the lines of communication are there and you've seen it with Adam [Forrester] The opportunities are there if they work hard every day they get better and they show what they can do with the B team “The opportunities are there for them and I think it's great for them to feel Foxy there I think that's a really important part and to see Adam playing gives them that added motivation and a little bit of extra hope.” Neil Critchley was an interested spectator at Ainslie Park on Friday night Liam Fox and Paul Gallacher and Beith admits that it’s a positive thing for the youngsters to see “The staff and the players really appreciate when the manager comes It gives them an opportunity for them to go and see them first hand it does add a little bit extra as well for them “I think that the players feel it and it's a really good thing to have in the club because it's streamlined and aligned and everybody's kind of in it together and they're treating the B-team seriously.” Having spent time within the Hearts Academy himself Beith believes he has lots of personal experience to pass on to the current crop of youngsters in maroon “I think having felt it myself all the way through the academy and then being there as a player where I was trying to make that last step and I was in and around the first team I didn't manage to become a mainstay in the team “I think it stands me in good stead to pass on little bits and pieces to the boys and help them and I think even some of the mistakes that I perhaps made at that age as well “The biggest thing is that I think when you're that age you probably think you know better sometimes but it's just trying to get them to see that I'm here to help you I think I've got a lot of good relationships and connections with the boys that will hopefully help with that and hopefully to take on that info and we can get them up and pushing towards the first team.” The head coach kicked off his permanent time in charge with three points as Mackenzie Ross scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over Broxburn Athletic at Ainslie Park on Friday night which saw them go 11 matches without a win Broxburn pushed hard in the second half and Hearts had to really roll up their sleeves towards the end and grind out the win Asked if it was more pleasing to get that long-awaited win in the grind out manner that they did “I think for my nerves I would have preferred a 3-0 I think it's results like this that almost bring the group together and the feeling in the changing room was amazing I think because we really had to grind it out we had to suffer loads and suffer together and because of that I think for our development where we're at as a team and that being a bit of a weakness for us this year hopefully it will give them confidence when we're in those situations again going forward this season it's been a focus mainly on the basics of just working hard it's about you individually getting better each day because that's a really important part of their development but make sure that you're not taking that into training because it's your development that's on the line every day “Focus is a big word for me and that's been there especially the last couple of weeks in training much better and I think we've actually then seen that on the pitch tonight So that's been my main message in training make sure you look after your individual development you're at it every day and you're maximising yourself we've then seen it translate on the pitch today Angus Beith sat down with Hearts TV for his first interview since being appointed B Team head coach A former product of the Hearts youth academy Angus was forced into early retirement aged 23 but returned to the club to take his first steps in the world of coaching Having been appointed B Team assistant head coach to Liam Fox in the summer Angus was placed in Interim charge of the B Team when Fox was brought into the first team setup he admitted to being a little surprised to have been offered the role but said he was extremely grateful for the opportunity A brilliant challenge for me at the stage that I'm at in my coaching I didn't expect to be in this sort of role so quickly but I'm so incredibly grateful to the club to put me in such a position I’m really enjoying the challenge and I’m loving being on the pitch every day with the boys And I think what's really helped me with the role in particular the last two or three months is having seen Foxy [Liam Fox] do it for the last four months and work really closely with him in terms of the planning and the execution of the sessions so that's stood me in really good stead going into the role “I now have the support of Shelley [Kerr] as well I feel like I'm in a really good position to take the group forward and obviously focus on the individuals within that and do the best we can.” who has progressed through various roles within the football club and the Balerno Performance School Angus explains he has learned off a variety of different coaches during his time with the club I'm probably missing a few but then I got exposed to Ian Cathro and Craig Levein as well on the first team I’ve had some brilliant coaches that have helped me along the way And I've obviously taken little bits and pieces from all of them and now in particular “Doing that with Shelley now and Donald [Park] as well Brilliant as a person and just passing little bits on to me all the time when he was here.” Beith is hoping to be able to draw on some of his own personal experiences as an academy player at Tynecastle to help the current crop of youngsters rising through the ranks “I can draw on the experiences that I went through “It was a little bit different obviously not playing in the B team when I was younger they've got that exposure to the men's game playing in the under-20s league as it was at the time and training with the first team and trying to make that next step I can hopefully give them little bits and pieces that I did well during that journey I can hopefully guide them in the right direction as best I possibly can and hopefully with my coaching the way I am with them I'd like to think hopefully that gets across to them as well.” You can watch Angus’ interview in full by clicking here. exciting opportunity overseas Beith joined the club in January last year initially working as joint assistant coach but solely took up the role when Burt moved into a newly formed head of recruitment role last summer Beith has been an integral part of the training and coaching set-up at the club as it continues to make positive strides with results on the pitch The club would like to place on record it’s thanks to Gavin for all his hard work and wish him the very best in the next chapter of his career “I’ve had such a great time working alongside Gav With the experience and knowledge that he has in Scottish football he’s been so important for me to have around as I continue to pick up things on the Scottish game but he leaves to take up a really good opportunity and we wish him all the best.”   Angus Beith admits he was impressed with the attacking display from his side as they defeated Civil Service Strollers 5-2 on Saturday The Wee Jambos came from behind to find themselves 3-2 up at the break in a chaotic first half Hearts defended well to protect their lead before adding two goals courtesy of Ryan Duncan and Bobby McLuckie to seal the three points and end 2024 on a high They came and pressed us high as we expected them to do we just didn't nail the basics well enough we didn't pass it properly enough and didn't exploit the space but the way that we reacted after that was really pleasing which was a really soft goal for us to concede But we managed to get to 3-2 which was really pleasing to see how we responded but we looked so dangerous every single time we went forward today That’s been something that we’ve worked on for the last couple of weeks We managed to put the game to bed with two goals in the second half and there was so many positives to take from the game especially after the defeat against Cumbernauld Colts which was so disappointing.”   Beith said that his side improved defensively in the second half to keep Strollers out the basics weren’t there in terms of 1v1 defending and making that first contact we were miles better at that in the second half we picked up more second balls and made it more difficult for them across the pitch.”  The manager looked ahead to their reverse fixture against Strollers on Friday 3rd of January at Ainslie Park “They’re a good team and they’ve got a good threat in the wide areas and good delivery We need to stop that and deal with that a bit better I think it’ll be a slightly different game on the astro I expect us to pass the ball better and control the game on the ball We have to prepare for the same level of crosses again.”  “My challenge now to the players is to have that same threat that we had today Angus Beith has praised his young Hearts B side for the character they showed to battle back to take a point against Broomhill on Tuesday night The Wee Jambos fell behind midway through the first half through a spot-kick by Connor Dow netted his first goal for the B Team to ensure a share of the spoils ”I actually thought that we played really well for the rest of the game tonight In the first half we started the game brilliantly the pitch obviously isn't the best here and our decision making on whether to play in behind or go and play through was really good competed really well which is going to be important tonight I'm just disappointed that we made the mistake for the penalty It then becomes a game where they're more in control and they can sit a wee bit deeper and frustrate us “But the character that we showed in the second half was brilliant stuck together and Conor's taken his goal brilliantly which I'm delighted for "I think as well when they go 1-0 up it makes it more difficult for us because they get bodies behind the ball and they're happy to just sit and camp in front of their 18-yard line "It becomes more difficult to break them down We did brilliantly to open up with Kenzi's pass and Connor's touch and finish which was magnificent That's what it was going to take against that sort of low block “Then we had the momentum and then Kenzi gets sent off I felt like we had seven or eight minutes to go at that point Kenzi gets sent off which is disappointing and flips the momentum again it's going to be so different to the games that we've played recently on Astro “It was going to be a different type of game today It was almost going to be a personality test for a lot of them “I thought Taylor was excellent in the first half Alfie as well showed some really good moments Callen and Connor came on and worked well together as a two “It took them a bit of time to get into the game but then they started being a threat in the second part of the second half a brilliant experience for them on a tricky pitch where you have to adapt your game a wee bit gamble and anticipate and play off each other Asked if some of the younger members of the group can expect more game time in the final matches of the season We've obviously got two suspensions now as well so there's going to be more opportunities for the under-18s and then opportunities for the 16s to then play in the 18 squad as well “That's the way it's working at the moment so they'll get opportunities to play again These guys are competing with the so-called older players and starting players which is a really positive thing to have in the squad.”
