Beverley hosts a seven-race card on Monday where Newsboy's Nap, Ubetterseethis, runs in the 2.20UBETTERSEETHIS is fancied to build on a promising start to his career at Pontefract last month by landing the EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (2.20) at Beverley.
Craig Lidster’s juvenile didn’t go unbacked at 10-1 when taking on eight opponents for a five-furlong novice stakes in West Yorkshire three weeks ago.
Racing in midpack during the early stages, Ubetterseethis and William Pyle made headway towards the lead passing the halfway stage and ran on strongly through the final furlong to go under by a head to Awraad.
With that experience under his belt, and a kind draw in stall two, Ubetterseethis should go one better.
In the following We Love A Bank Holiday Handicap (2.55), JEANY MAY has plenty going for her.
The daughter of Mayson rounded off 2024 with a first career success in a Nottingham nursery last November.
That victory came on soft ground but there was enough in Jeany May’s return-to-action fourth to Barmyblade at Catterick Bridge last month to make her of interest on this quicker terrain.
4.40 Beverley
Sanat began his career over a mile
but it now looks highly likely he will flourish at sprint distances
a five-furlong specialist with an official rating of 86
looked every inch a sprinter when landing a 5f handicap at Southwell last time
He produced a good turn of foot to settle that 0-85 in a first-time tongue-tie and beat stablemate Counsel by a length and a half
The third Rhythm N Hooves has won at Southwell since
while the fourth Jumbeau performed really well to finish third to the now 99-rated Spartan Arrow in a handicap at Epsom last month
Sanat, raised 6lb to a mark of 79 following that Southwell success, fits snugly into Beverley’s feature 5f handicap (4.40)
but is also open to runners with marks of 79 and 80
so it’s fair to say Sanat may hold a considerable class advantage over his 13 rivals
who will be having just the ninth run of his career
is open to more improvement than most of his opponents and could prove several pounds better than his current mark in due course
In addition to looking the perfect fit for the race

An entry in last year’s PlayLab competition
it came to the attention of East Riding Theatre in Beverley
who are now presenting it in a world premiere production
Joe Bravaco explains the link between his home base by saying
“I have always been a huge fan of Brian Friel’s work and Martin McDonagh’s.” It’s good that he’s so honest; it saves the reviewer from making the obvious connection for this is one of the myriad Irish plays that followed on Friel’s success – and
if it’s by no means the best of the Sons of Friel
it’s a workmanlike piece cloaking serious points about human life in a blanket of whimsy
Emily Clay’s set again works miracles with the limited wing-less space at Beverley
Stage right is an apparently sturdy outer wall
stage left an attractive approximation to a cottage exterior
with front door leading on to a front area with seat
whilst behind the gap is filled by a conventional interior
with the first couple of steps leading upstairs
At the beginning of the play Tommy (Declan Sammon) is breakfasting and calling upstairs to his brother Jamie (Gabriel Winter)
he breaks into Tommy’s sunny morning mood by insisting that he
In between Tommy’s attempts to get him to see a doctor
taking in their mother’s preference for Jamie and Tommy’s stalled career as an artist
At the very end of the act Tommy sees a body on the headland and Jamie refuses to join him in an attempt at rescue
The second act is divided into shorter scenes at some distance apart in time
Tommy becomes a father (those blissful early mornings ruined and an extra drain on his emotions) and is successful as a painter of portraits and
he now reappears only when Tommy needs him
centres on Tommy’s increasing sense of guilt (over his neglect of his mother
for instance) and his need to seal Jamie’s forgiveness with a hug
finally given in a telling twist at the end
Richard Avery maintains a sense of realism in the actions and attitudes of the two brothers
though the decision to suggest Jamie’s otherworldliness by an affected gait is unfortunate
Declan Sammon manages to convince in a whole gamut of characters from the contented idler to the tormented seeker for forgiveness
The different facets of Gabriel Winter’s character – the brother reminiscing
the “almost ghost” confident of how things will turn out – operate side by side

A new character appraisal has been adopted for Beverley Road Conservation Area
the character of the conservation was identified as being poor

Building work will be taking place at Fir Trees Nursery School in Beverley – which recently received an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating – to increase nursery places and provide an enhanced offering to children aged 0 – 4 years in the East Riding
Plans include conversion of an outdoor barn – which is currently used for outdoor activities – into a warm and welcoming indoor space
The main nursery building will also be reconfigured to create three
with a free flow pathway connecting them all
“The work taking place in the nursery means we can increase nursery places by 50% – which is much-needed at the moment
following the change in government funding for childcare,” said manager Lauren Turner
so we’re delighted to be able to meet that demand and make it easier for parents to return to work
the new layout will connect all children to our outdoor space – wherever they are in the nursery
This will enable more outside play and outdoor learning opportunities
the layout meant that the garden wasn’t able to be utilised to its fullest
so we’re really happy that we’ll be able to make full use of the space – and the children can’t wait!”
co-directors Caroline Woodcock and Laura Kitney acquired Fir Trees in 2023
Caroline said: “This is an incredibly exciting time for Fir Trees
We’ve been on a real journey over the last two years
Having secured an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating and with our experienced team in place
now felt like the right time to make our new building plans a reality.”
Among the features highlighted in Fir Trees’ recent Ofsted report were the close bonds formed between staff and children
with the report stating: “Children demonstrate that they are extremely happy
Staff create a warm and calm atmosphere for children to learn
and they go above and beyond to ensure that all children have the best start in life.”
said: “The Ofsted report was a real motivator for us and confirmed that we’re ready for the next phase in our journey
The building work is due to complete in September.”
added: “I’d like to thank our incredible team and parents for their support and commitment to our outstanding – and growing – nursery
and we look forward to welcoming new children and parents to the nursery in September!”

The first stage of the day at Wawne Common is the longest and runs at 9:29am
the crews reassemble in Saturday Market for two runs on the Westwood (12:41pm and 12:56pm) and then it’s a re-run of the first four stages
Last year’s winners Mark Kelly and Will Atkinson will lead away the 169 cars from Saturday Market at 9am
But having won last year in a Skoda Fabia R5
the pair will be debuting their VW Polo GTI R5 and registered for the Protyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Championship

Between 2009 and 2017 Cronin was champion on five occasions
He was fourth in last year’s BRC with a Ford Fiesta Rally2
William Creighton and Liam Regan are the third car away in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally 2

whether it be in a purely music form or in a theatrical setting
I’m excited to be able to tell the Sister Rosetta story in this important play about her life
trailblazing career and her relationship with the legendary gospel singer Marie Knight
This will be my first role in a professional play; I have performed many times in plays at an amateur level and I’m so thrilled that I get to tell HERstory as my debut
her electrifying guitar and her Gospel message laid the foundations on which Chuck Berry
Elvis Presley and literally everyone else has walked
The Godmother of rock ‘n’ roll deserves to be celebrated and remembered”
Director Monique Touko said: “It is truly an honour to stage the UK premiere of Marie and Rosetta by George Brant
Returning to both Rose and Chichester with this needed and powerful story feels very timely
This play allows us to not only celebrate the incredible lives of two trailblazing Black female musicians
blending song and spectacle to bring their legacy to life
We’ll zoom in on the moments of their lives
and amplify their voices—both literally and metaphorically
It’s a privilege and a responsibility to depict these women in their full glory
ensuring they receive the recognition they so deeply deserve for their monumental contributions to music and culture.”
said: ”I have been passionate about Marie and Rosetta ever since I first read it eight years ago
Both women are icons who deserve far greater recognition than they have today
I knew immediately that Monique Touko was the right person to direct it – she brings such passion
style and integrity to everything she does
And there simply is no better performer in the country than Beverley Knight to bring the remarkable Rosetta Tharpe to life
This is a show that will delight and move anyone who sees it and I cannot wait to share it with our audience.”

We know that Chichester audiences will relish this remarkable story
and can’t wait to fill the Minerva Theatre with Beverley’s renditions of this glorious music.”

Women's athleisure brand Tala is opening its first permanent brick-and-mortar store this May
Founded in 2019 by fitness influencer-turned-entrepreneur and Drapers 30 Under 30 2021 alumna Grace Beverley
the digital-first business will take on a 2,000 sq ft retail unit at 3-4 Carnaby Street
double-fronted store will include omnichannel and mobile checkout capabilities
it will stock a range of store-exclusive products
The central London location will allow the business to raise consumer awareness among visiting tourists
Tala CEO Morgan Fowles (right) told Drapers: "Being such an international footfall location
one of the targets for us is just to attract customers and build brand awareness - not just in London
"That was part of why we chose the location [of Carnaby Street]."
The 2,000 sq ft store will also double as a community-building venue for consumers:
"The space is big enough that we can host events in-store
influencers or a Pilates class," said Fowles
Tala trades primarily through its direct-to-consumer ecommerce website and launched in luxury department store Selfridges in May 2024
which helped inform the decision to open a standalone store: "Our customers have told us resoundingly
including via our success at Selfridges stores across the UK
that they still love shopping in physical stores," she added
The womenswear brand, known for its activewear products including leggings and sports bras, is also stocked online by Asos, Next and Next's premium fashion platform Seasons
Retail prices range from £14 for intimates to £229 for a water-resistant puffer coat
It will also allow consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions amid a wide range of Tala products: "As soon as you're in a physical space with all of our ranges laid out
it starts to become clear to you whether you're a Sculpt Seamless [shapewear-inspired athleisure] customer
whether you're a DayFlex [daily athleisure] customer
"That's the sort of forum that a physical space can provide that is a lot more difficult to communicate online," she said
Beverley described the upcoming first store opening as "a dream come true"
"I'm most excited for visitors to feel the quality of our products
and interact with the brand in a space that offers a rich

Having been in born in a rural village in Wales I grew up loving it but in my teens and twenties found it boring and in all honesty suffocating, everyone knew everyone and in my mind that meant every ones business! As a result in 1986 I moved to the city, not just any city but London where the lights shone bright and no one cared who you were or indeed local city, Cardiff may be a better choice, but I was adamant so off like Dick Whittington I went.
This move led me to over the next 24 years making 22 others; I lived in cities (I spent some time in Dublin too), by the sea and back in a country setting; I lived in bedsits, apartments, houses and cottages but as happy as I thought I was I could never settle, until I came home.
Yep in 2011 I moved back to that rural village and I have never been happier. I love my life and indeed everything about it, I have done since the day I returned. I have realised that there really is no place like home and indeed home is where the heart is.
Looking back on all those house moves I can see that actually the best places I lived were in fact set in the country, I just love being out and about surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature however years ago I guess my youth saw it differently.
When getting married two years ago we choose a country setting for our wedding and I loved it so much I have decided to hold our retreat there this summer. The venue is literally surrounded by the lush Monmouthshire countryside we live in which can do nothing but create relaxation and calm, for more details check the events page on my website.
So, what is your preference? Does your home now reflect your childhood? Maybe you still live in the childhood home or community. If not do you ever go ‘home’ and wonder why you ever left? For years I spent time searching for something that was only to be found where I started, in fairness my travel around different homes bought me great joy and many, many friends who I am still so blessed to have in my life, yet I do often wonder, ‘what if I never left’?
I know I am not the only person who left my home village only to come back, in fact I often get chatting to many who say after years of wanderlust from home it has truly been the only place where the heart has remained.
Today I am grateful for the community I live in, there is so much care for each other and I for one know that village life is definitely for me, that combined with the sight of wild flowers showing us spring is around the corner show's me every day that you can take the girl away from home but you can never take home away from the girl (in my case anyway).

Beverley Knight is to play Sister Rosetta Tharpe in a drama about the gospel singer and guitarist who became known as “the godmother of rock’n’roll”

and amplify their voices – both literally and metaphorically.”
Marie and Rosetta runs at the Rose theatre from 2-24 May then at Chichester Festival theatre from 25 June-26 July
As we find ourselves in a new calendar year (and how quickly it seems to have come around!)
I’d like to wish all our regular parkrunners and walkers
volunteers and visitors a very happy and healthy 2025 – may it bring you all much joy
I’ve found myself reflecting on ‘joy’ a lot lately – what it really means
how we can hold onto it for longer… One of the things that regularly brings me joy is turning up on the Westwood on a Saturday morning
to walk/jog/trudge/ shuffle/dance (only very occasionally!) my way round parkrun in excellent company
Even on the days when I feel like I might not have enough energy to push myself physically
I know that if I can just make it to the start area
I can choose to participate at my own pace without any pressure or competition (other than with myself!)
or to support the event as a marshal (with our grassy
undulating course and cow companions in the summer months
those special days when you can chase the next PB have their own magic too
when I’ve shared the morning with like-minded people
Linda Spencer (smiling above) and Sara Owen
who I chatted with on the way round this week!) and beautiful views across the pastures (even in the fog
there’s something special about the way Black Mill suddenly emerges in front of you) and doing something unrelated to the day-to-day pressures
responsibilities and anxieties that can dominate our thoughts throughout the rest of the week
I was therefore determined to join in with the first Beverley Westwood parkrun of 2025
generously supported by 41 vivacious volunteers
walked and ran alongside ‘auld acquaintances’ and new (42 BWp first-timers
including 9 people running and walking their first ever parkrun)
and this week’s cohort included those from Bristol
We really hope you enjoyed your BWp experience and would love to see you again soon
The frost made for a chilly morning (grateful thanks to the volunteer team
especially the marshals standing out in the cold to help keep us safe and spur us on with their enthusiasm and encouragement!)
helping a terrific 17 of our number to achieve a PB – amazing work
We love to give a shout out for milestone achievements
Richard Foster and Alex Dean celebrated their 25th parkrun
Suzie Hulse ran her 50th and Sarah Harris-Smith reached 150 – congratulations to you all and I hope parkrun continues to bring you joy
lightning Luke Chatizwa led the pack home in first place (in 18:52)
with Giles Rowley crossing the finish line at 20:39 and Kayden Chatizwa just seconds behind setting a super new PB of 20:45
finished just a couple of minutes behind Luke (in 21:18) to bring it home for the ladies – fantastic efforts
In a report dominated by mentions of achievements and joy
A familiar face to the BWp regulars and volunteers
Finlay and his family have enjoyed running on the Westwood and with Beverley Athletic Club for years
It was therefore a proud moment for us all to see him don the Run Director vest on Saturday morning (supported by Ed Husband)
give the briefing and set the runners and walkers off
completing his bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award
having volunteered at parkrun for 13 weeks
in the Windmill Inn over a post-run coffee
it was clear to see how much parkrun means to the family
and while Finlay has excelled at the varied volunteering roles that support the event
he is looking forward to finding his own joy through returning to running the course
We can’t wait to see your milestones and PBs stack up
thank you for your efforts and good luck in all you do next
a quick note on the joys of the post-parkrun ritual that is coffee and/or breakfast at the Windmill Inn… if the physical activity of the parkrun itself is not a possibility for you personally
or you can manage it but the weather’s been unkind and you forgot your gloves and your socks are wet
or you were disappointed with your finish time
trust me when I say that rewards can be found elsewhere
catch-ups and laughter as you warm your hands round that first lovely coffee – these can all bring joy to your Saturday too
A particular shout out to my coffee company this week
Polly Campbell (a BWp and Beverley Fitmums regular who is now a firm friend)
Mike Wilson (congratulations to Mike on completing his first parkrun
though he couldn’t scan his barcode on this occasion – we look forward to welcoming you back again for your ‘official’ first!) and the fabulous ‘Where’s Wally’-costumed Ali Carter
who shared with us the joys of parkrun tourism (and the friendships made along the way) whilst sorting tokens with regular BWp runner and volunteer Julia Peplow
where parkrun first started 20 years ago – and unsurprisingly
Finlay and the Hill family have also made the ‘parkrun pilgrimage’ to Bushy to run this special course that started it all
Thanks to all of you for sharing your anecdotes and enthusiasm while we thawed out
walk and drink coffee with you all again very soon
Of the 42 first timers 33 were parkrun tourists and 9 people completed their first parkrun
17 speedy people recorded a new personal best and representatives of 22 different clubs took part
The event was made possible by 41 vivacious volunteers:
