The previous government sought to reduce the use of hotels to accommodate people who seek asylum by trying to procure accommodation in local areas as well as by setting up large sites such as barges and disused military bases
the Home Office decided to acquire the Northeye site in Bexhill-on-Sea
who had previously bought the site in August 2022 for around £6.3 million
The Home Office completed the purchase of the Northeye site in September 2023 for around £15.4 million
The Home Office anticipated that the site would provide around 1,400 bed spaces through a mix of refurbished and new buildings
The site is contaminated and requires remediating
This report sets out the process by which the Home Office acquired the Northeye site and the reasons for the site not being operational yet
The NAO undertook this work in response to concerns raised over the suitability of the site for asylum accommodation
The report adds to the findings from the NAO’s March 2024 report, Investigation into asylum accommodation
which covered the Home Office’s acquisition of other large sites in detail but did not include the Northeye site
and does not conclude on the value for money of the acquisition
The Home Office’s attempt to acquire the Northeye site within just a few months of adopting it onto the non-detained asylum accommodation programme led it to cut corners and make a series of poor decisions
This resulted in it purchasing a site that was unsuitable for that original purpose
and it paying more for it than it needed to
While the site has been moved to a different programme and may yet fulfil a need the Home Office has
it remains to be seen whether the acquisition of the Northeye site results in benefits that justify its cost
It is encouraging that the Home Office has taken steps to understand what went wrong
and that it has made changes to improve its in-house property function
But this case exemplifies the need to adhere to minimum standards and not forgo due diligence

RAG’N’BONE MAN + ELLES BAILEY + JON POPPII – DE LA WARR PAVILION
BRITs Week 25, delivered by DHL for War Child entered its last gig on Wednesday 5th March with triple BRIT award winner, Rag ‘N’ Bone Man bringing his raw, soulful vocals to the iconic seafront location of De La Warr Pavilion
Rag’n’Bone Man played this very special intimate gig at the cherished East Sussex venue for the charity War Child
at a time when more children than ever need #WarChild’s support
Fresh from his storming third studio album release (‘What Do You Believe In?’– released 18th October 2024)
Rag ‘N’ Bone Man is preparing himself for a busy 2025 with extensive worldwide touring and musical releases to come
All proceeds from the shows went towards War Child’s phenomenal work to help provide protection
and more while standing up for the rights of children whose lives have been devastatingly affected by war
The total amount raised for War Child by BRITs Week
It is estimated that 1 in 5 children are currently living in or fleeing from conflict
with your support War Child can help children put the pieces back together
By experiencing the thrill and excitement of the intimate
one-off performances you will be directly contributing to helping these children rebuild their lives
The gig is sold out which is great news for the War Child charity
I thankfully settled into my seat just in time for support, London’s Jon Poppii
starting his set after a horrendous fight to find a parking space
heartfelt songs and for me the best of his set was ‘Wasted Prayer’ a new track he was trying out on the audience tonight
It was beautiful and the rest of the crowd agreed

Next up – Elles Bailey who is an award-winning
critically acclaimed artist who seamlessly straddles the worlds of Americana
Some of those awards include: UK song of the Year 2020 at the Americana Awards UK
Album of the Year 2020 and 2023 at the UK Blues Awards
Artist and Live Act of the Year 2023 at the Americana Awards UK
Vocalist of the Year 2023 at the UK Blues Awards and Artist of the Year 2020
2021 and 2023 at the UK Blues Awards – a “threepeat” victory that saw her excluded from any further wins but inducted her into the UK Blues Hall of Fame
She started by saying that she was honoured to be here tonight supporting Rag ‘N’ Bone Man for War Child
All the songs she delivered were from last year’s album ‘Beneath The Neon Glow’
What a great voices from both of these women
As she’s singing ‘Truth Ain’t Gonna Save Us’ she makes her way down off the stage in front of the crowd – a great fan pleaser for those who’ve come to see her
She belts out each song from the very depth of her body – a very powerful performer
She’s out supporting Rag ‘N’ Bone Man on tour this summer with her full band and it’ll be a great match
She finishes her set with ‘Enjoy The Ride’ and we surely did
www.ellesbailey.com
The love for Rag ‘N’ Bone Man from the audience explodes as he comes on stage
Talking about Bexhill-on-Sea he told us that he;d “Never played a venue so close to my house” – he’s originally from Uckfield
On the drive over he hit a pot hole and had to be rescued by his tour manager but on the plus side he said it meant he could drink tequila as he wasn’t driving
As well as past and present tracks there were two live debut tracks ‘Time To Love’ and ‘Ghosts’ which were sensational and showed ongoing development from this remarkable artist
He’s backed by a amazing band creating a wall of wondrous noise
His two backing singers were superb with one delivering a duet with the man himself at one point
What a voice and what a show which finished with ‘Giant’ which certainly describes how I would describe Rag ‘N’ Bone Man – a giant in our music industry
There were however a couple of negatives for me during the night
The constant shining a light on the audience was tiresome as was the amount of audience chatting which I heard many of my fellow audience members
I’ve never heard so much talking during a gig before
As Rag ‘N’ Bone Man winds up the show he tells us not to buy his album but to buy the War Child t-shirts
It’s all about the songs – they speak for him

A SEASIDE town with huge beach is often passed over in favour of nearby larger resorts
despite having an important part in UK history
Bexhill-on-Sea in Sussex is near the bigger St Leonard's
This is despite having a long two-mile beach
beach gardens and beach hunts along the promenade
Some even say it's better than the nearby Brighton - one tourist wrote: "Compare this to busy Brighton and there's no comparison if you just want a quiet day on the beach."
It is also one of the sunniest places in the UK
One of the main seafront attractions is the Art Deco De La Warr Pavilion
built in 1934 and one of the country's first modernist buildings
Bexhill-on-Sea has also been dubbed the 'birthplace of British motor racing'.
The town hosted the UK's first motor race in 1902
won by French driver Leon Serpollet with speeds up to 54mph
Petrol heads can now head to Bexhill Museum to learn about it's motor history, as well as the town's history in general including dinosaurs and shipwrecks in the area.
Brickmakers Alehouse was listed as one the UK's top pubs by Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) this year
Otherwise there is also the The Picture Playhouse
a Wetherspoons pub built into a 1921 cinema
TV presenter Graham Norton previously lived in Bexhill, putting up his house for sale for £2.3million back in 2017.
Other famous celebs include Eddie Izzard and Spike Milligan
The town is also getting a multi-million pound renovation
as part of the government's £20 million levelling up scheme
Fancy staying? Most of the places in Bexhill-on-Sea are B&Bs and home rentals although there are a few hotels
There is the coastal The Relais Cooden Beach
or the boutique The Driftwood with just six rooms
Trains to Bexhill take just under two hours from London
Or its an hour's drive from Brighton
Another Victorian seaside town is Frinton-on-Sea in Essex
which was loved by royals and even visited by Winston Churchill
Or there is Matlock Bath, a 'seaside' town that isn't on the beach - and we sent a reporter down to explore

Work has started on the next two phases of construction at Vistry The Gateway location in Bexhill-on-Sea
which will provide a range of housing options for local people
The homebuilder is already building 200 homes on the outskirts of the seaside town under its Bovis Homes brand
Now it is starting work on another 447 properties across two new phases under its Linden Homes and Countryside Homes brands
which were approved by Rother District Council in November 2023
with 300 of these available as affordable homes
shared ownership homes or for private rent
They will be part of a much wider neighbourhood which has outline planning permission for up to 1,050 homes
regional sales and marketing director for Vistry Kent
said: “This project is a landmark development for the area
providing high-quality homes in a well-designed new neighbourhood
To be starting work on the next two phases is an important milestone
“Hundreds of these new homes will be accessible to people who might not have the budget to buy a full price new-build property because we have various rental and shared ownership opportunities here
“These include homes above and beyond the affordable housing provision set out in the planning agreement for the development
and this is very much in line with our values at Vistry
We are pleased to be making high-quality homes available to all
and to be working with investment firm CBRE
The first of the next two phases was launched under the Linden Homes brand on Saturday 15 June and includes 92 homes
Vistry is due to release the first homes under its Countryside Homes brand at the development – comprising 264 homes in autumn
there will be 153 affordable homes which Vistry committed to as part of the planning agreement for the development
These have been purchased by CBRE and will be managed by Pinnacle Spaces
there will be 73 shared ownership properties built for Sage Homes by Countryside Homes within its part of the development
while a further 74 homes will be available to rent through Leaf Living
four and five-bedroom Bovis Homes properties currently available to reserve at The Gateway
