Plans have been submitted to Tewkesbury Borough Council for another 100 new homes in Bishop's Cleeve
The 7.5ha 'North Clevelands' site is to the north of the village
west of Evesham Road and close to the recent Clevelands residential development
The proposals are for 60 open market homes and 40 affordable homes
The plans also include new access from Evesham Road
new landscaping and habitat creation and a drop-off car park for the proposed new primary school in the area
The site has easy access to new facilities provided on the Clevelands development
as well as facilities in the centre of Bishop's Cleeve and nearby Gotherington
Mature trees and hedgerows on the site will be retained and protected from damage
unless required for access or health and safety reasons
LRM Planning on behalf of Persimmon Homes said: "Currently
Tewkesbury Borough Council cannot demonstrate a 5-year housing land supply as required by the National Planning Policy Framework; the latest published figure being 3.24 years (dated October 2023)
"As demonstrated in their Interim Housing Position Statement (IHPS)
there is a need to deliver residential development on non-allocated land
such as that proposed by these applications
"The December 2023 Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment assessed the application site and concluded that it was available and potentially suitable
to be delivered in a 5-year period subject to further technical assessment and design work
"Located adjacent to an established Rural Service Centre
the application site is a sustainable and suitable location for residential development
consistent with the Joint Core Strategy's spatial strategy and will address the borough council's significant shortfall in housing land supply
The residential scheme aligns with the key criteria set out in the IHPS and should therefore be supported by the borough council."
the site is not identified in the statutory Development Plan for housing - including the Joint Core Strategy (JCS) for Cheltenham
Gloucester and Tewkesbury; the Tewkesbury Borough Local Plan; and the Gotherington Neighbourhood Plan
the proposed development is contrary to the countryside policies
Persimmon concludes: "The development proposal demonstrates a considered approach that seeks to retain and enhance the site's existing landscape features
"Development would not cause notable detriment to the wider panoramic views achievable
long-term harm to landscape character or visual amenity."
Yeovil Town will travel to face either Bishops Cleeve or Chesham United in the Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying on Saturday
The Glovers await the outcome of the replay between the two sides tomorrow evening to determine who they will face

Torquay United suffered a painful 3-0 FA Cup defeat at Southern League Bishops Cleeve to fall at the first hurdle in the world’s oldest competition
On a day when everything that could go wrong did go wrong
United fell behind to an early goal from Ross Langworthy
A second from Langworthy immediately after the restart turned the molehill into a mountain and it was game over when Ethan Dunbear made it 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining
After going down to a late loss at Welling in the league a week previous
United boss Paul Wotton freshened up his side with the introduction of Omar Mussa and Brad Ash
who quickly posed a threat with a header back across goal from a Finn Tonks cross but the home side scrambled clear
United were looking comfortable when they were given an almighty shock by the determined hosts
a long ball over the top was nodded back towards goal by Dean Moxey but it lacked the power to reach goalkeeper James Hamon
allowing Langworthy room to pounce for the opening goal
Bishops Cleeve took that moment of joy as a moment of huge inspiration
Dunbear firing a free-kick narrowly off target before Jay Malshanskyi was given too much room behind the United defence
mercifully shooting wide from a great position
The same Bishop then forced Hamon into a decent save and Malshanskyi still had time to blaze over the bar after again escaping the clutches of a beleaguered United defence
The Gulls came out with renewed purpose after the break but found that bubble unceremoniously burst by a second from Langworthy
heading home from close range after a superb incisive counter by the home side
Wotton rolled the dice with the introduction of Jadyn Crosbie
and United enjoyed their best spell of a traumatic afternoon
Craske forcing a decent save from home custodian Lewis Clayton with a powerful header from Matt Carson’s corner
Just as the Gulls began to build some semblance of momentum
Dunbear latching on to another ball over the top to bear down on Hamon and fire a tidy finish into the gaping net
Dunbear almost made it worse with a close effort in the final minutes but there was no hiding from an extremely difficult afternoon for Torquay United
10 Ross Langworthy (c) (19 Edward Scott 90+3)
12 Isaac Pearce (7 Aaron Evans-Harriott 61)
18 Oscar Threlkeld (c) (8 Roddy Collins 57), 21 Dean Moxey (2 Finley Craske 53)

A man has been sentenced after DNA found on a tissue and inside an abandoned van linked him to an attempted ram raid at a supermarket
was sentenced to two years in prison after previously pleading guilty to burglary other than dwelling with intent to steal
The court heard how Bradley was one of a group of men who had used a 4x4 vehicle in an attempt to force entry to Tesco Superstore on Church Road in Bishops Cleeve during the early hours of Wednesday 6 December 2023
CCTV footage showed the group clearing the foyer of items such as Christmas wreaths
display shelves and baskets before a Mercedes 4x4 was reversed into metal shutters in an attempt to access the main supermarket
There were members of staff working inside the premises at the time of the incident
however the cost to repair the damage was just under £80,000
and the store was required to close for the day
It is believed that the supermarket lost £120,000 in potential sales and staff pay as a result
Bradley became a suspect for the attempted ram raid after his DNA was found on a tissue which had been left behind in the car park of the supermarket
The Renault transit van he drove to the scene in was reported abandoned hours later and found to have been stolen
The van was forensically examined and Bradley's DNA was found on the steering wheel
who was already in prison following a previous conviction
was visited by officers and during an interview in February 2024
admitted that he was planning to leave with a safe if the ram raid had been successful
He was subsequently charged in connection with the incident and pleaded guilty during a hearing on 9 October 2024
In mitigation Bradley's lawyer argued that he had a drug addiction and was an unwilling participant in the ram raid
It was stated that he had been recruited to take part by people he was afraid of
Bradley appeared at Gloucester Crown Court on Tuesday afternoon (12 November) where he was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £187
The sentence is due to run concurrently to a sentence he is currently serving for burglary offences after he was jailed in April for three years
Investigating officer PC Hancock from the Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Vanguard team said: "I am pleased that Bradley has been sentenced as his actions on 6 December last year had a huge impact on those involved
"It affected the community of Bishop's Cleeve as well as Tesco and its employees
This would've been a very frightening experience for the members of staff who were in the building at the time of the attempted ram raid."
For those of you who were wondering Bishop’s Cleeve is near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire and the team play in the Southern League Division One South
whilst National League South side Chesham United play near Aylesbury(ish) in Buckinghamshire
The teams drew 0-0 in their Third Qualifying Round tie at Bishop’s Cleeve on Saturday and their replay is scheduled to take place at Chesham on Tuesday night
The tie will be played on Saturday 12th October
The winners of the ties receive £9,375 with the losers getting £3,125
the FA has confirmed it will brush an extra £2.44m in prize money of crumbs off the table to compensate clubs who it has decided to deny the chance of a bit of the Cup magic it uses to promote the competition by scrapping replays from the First Round Proper
Some in the national media have referred to this amount as “eye-watering” although it is probably about a week’s wages for one of the Premier League superstars who will benefit from the decision

Plans for new industrial units could create 80 new jobs in Bishop's Cleeve
But the parish council has objected to the proposal for seven units
which is being discussed by Tewkesbury Borough Council's Planning Committee today (July 16)
the planned units will provide a total of 11,421.1sq m of space to be used for industrial
Plans include ancillary office accommodation
The proposed individual buildings are of varying sizes and each designed with the flexibility to be sub-divided
configured or combined to meet the demands of the business market
The application site is approximately 2.53 hectares of land to the west of Bishop's Cleeve and north of Stoke Road
It is part of a wider mixed-use development
The site is allocated as part of a Major Employment Site in the Tewkesbury Borough Local Plan
The proposal would seek to provide between 70 and 80 jobs when all units are occupied and in operation
The plans have been amended to allay some of the concerns of Bishop's Cleeve Parish Council
but the council still has objections on a number of grounds:
• Unsuitable development - the parish council believes the development is overbearing and out of proportion to the size of the site and its location on a narrow B road
• Lack of noise protection - the acoustic barriers are only positioned on the north side of the development and at 4m sit below the mezzanine level of the proposed buildings
They will offer little noise protection to the houses on the new development to the north of the site
• Size of development - the parish objects to the scale of the development
when compared against the planning history of the site for the scheme that was granted a total of 6,880sq m
• Operating times - the parish objects to there being no stipulation of operating times
Neighbouring Stoke Orchard and Tredington Parish Council is also concerned that the plans would significantly increase industrial/ heavy goods traffic trying to access the proposed industrial estate
But Tewkesbury Borough Council is in support of the development
with the location of the buildings within Bishop's Cleeve meaning local jobs
which would enable people to work and live in the area in sustainable manner
Council officers recommend that the committee permits the planning application

Flames from a waste management site could be seen from miles away last night (July 30)
Two compactors were on fire at Grundon Waste Management in Bishop's Cleeve
Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue service (GFRS) was called out at 8:54pm
but people could already smell smoke from as far away as Swindon Village at 8:15pm
A spokesperson for GFRS confirmed four fire engines were sent to the scene
one from Tewkesbury and three from Cheltenham
Local people were advised to close their windows and doors
after a large plume of black smoke drifted across a wide area
The spokesperson said: "Firefighters used four jets and two sets of breathing apparatus to put it out and the compactors were 100 per cent damaged by the fire
GFRS left the site at 1:30am today and confirmed it would be back today to carry out a reinspection
GFRS initially wrote on X that the fire was located at the Wingmoor Farm Household Recycling Centre
but later issued an update that it was actually at Grundon Waste Management

a northbound road closure (from Cheltenham to Bishop's Cleeve) will be in place on A435 Evesham Road between Cheltenham Racecourse roundabout and the Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction
northbound traffic will be diverted and only southbound traffic between Bishop's Cleeve and Cheltenham will be allowed through
The northbound road closure is to enable construction works on the east side of the road
throughout the section between the racecourse roundabout and Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction
It is required to facilitate multiple sets of works to be delivered concurrently and safely
avoiding the need for multiple sets of traffic lights and reducing the duration of the overall construction programme
access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained in both directions
During the full road closure and northbound closure periods
clearly signed diversion routes will be in place to guide road users safely around the works
Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance and follow the diversion signs carefully
Access to the garden centre and properties to the north of the GWSR Bridge on the A435 Evesham Road will remain in place from the north via the Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction during the full road closure in both directions and the northbound road closure
Bus services will still operate between Cheltenham and Bishop's Cleeve in both directions during the road closures via local diversion routes
The Phase 2 Section 2 works are being carried out concurrently with the previous phases of work on the A435 Cheltenham to Bishop's Cleeve Cycleway
This will ensure the entire project progresses efficiently and minimises the duration of disruptions for the public
It also avoids extending the overall project timeline and incurring additional costs
To reduce the overall impact on the community
the closures have also been scheduled to avoid major race meets at Cheltenham in March and November 2025
cabinet member for environment and planning
the scheme will significantly improve the infrastructure for active travel in the region and support the growth of sustainable travel options as part of our commitment to a Greener Gloucestershire
The closures are essential in enabling us to safely and successfully progress the cycleway
"We recognise the impact these temporary closures will have on road users and would like to thank them in advance for their patience and understanding during this important stage of works."
The A435 Cheltenham to Bishop's Cleeve Cycleway forms part of the Gloucestershire Cycle Spine
an ambitious project to create a 26-mile cycling and walking corridor extending across the county from Stroud in the south to Bishop's Cleeve in the north
it will be the longest new facility of its type in the country
The scheme will contribute to a significant cycling and walking network across Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire County Council has secured in the order of £19.6million of funding from Active Travel England
Gloucestershire County Council Funding and Community Infrastructure Levy Funding for the A435 Cheltenham to Bishops Cleeve Cycle Route
which will allow all three phases of the scheme to be delivered
Works are expected to be completed by early 2026
Further details of construction activities and traffic management will be shared at a meet the contractor event in May

Gulls manager reacts to a painful FA Cup defeat
Torquay United manager Paul Wotton pulled no punches in slamming his players after a 3-0 defeat at Southern League outfit Bishops Cleeve in the FA Cup
Wotton warned his team of the threats posed by a determined regional club looking to inflict a major upset but United’s tepid opening saw them fall behind to an early goal from Ross Langworthy
and the Bishops had chances to extend their lead before the half-time break
There was a painful inevitability about the second goal
again delivered by Langworthy just four minutes after the restart
and a third from Ethan Dunbear rubbed salt in a very painful wound for the Gulls
Wotton’s anger was understandable and unrelenting
Bishops Cleeve should have won by more,” he said
“I’m at a loss because they were pre-warned all week
What I will say is that I thought training was flat all week because there was disappointment from the Welling game but I can’t accept that performance for Torquay United
“We didn’t win a header and we didn’t win a tackle
In the first half we were playing into a strong wind and I told them to play in their half but we persisted on playing short balls into midfield and Bishops Cleeve were on us
I can suffer a lack of quality in a football game
but I’m embarrassed of our team today [Saturday]
“There is not a single player to come out of that with credit.”
The Gulls welcome St Albans to Plainmoor in the National League South on Saturday but Wotton is in no mood to move on from the Bishops Cleeve ‘embarrassment’
It is very clear he expects to see a reaction from a team that had made a decent start to the season and a team that must respond to this bitter disappointment
“Some people will say it doesn’t matter because we’re never going to win the FA Cup
and the manager and assistant manager are shouting more than a player on the pitch
“It isn’t a case of drawing a line under it and move on to the league
that’s got to sting and there’s got to be accountability
“The players know the standards I expect from them and my players have turned up like they have a divine right to win the game
There is no positive from the game and they’ve been told it’s unacceptable.”
