in Blackwood Blackwood has been named in a list of 95 branch closures by the Spanish bank – which first entered the UK market in 2004 with its takeover of former building society Abbey National National media reports have previously speculated whether the bank is gearing up for a UK exit The High Street branch in Blackwood will close its doors for good on June 23 while the Caerphilly branch will have its hours reduced opening only on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9.30am to 3pm who used to work at the Santander branch in Blackwood last month wrote to Santander questioning why Blackwood was closing and Caerphilly was reducing its opening hours he wrote: “Loyal Santander customers relied on it for their banking and the personal touch they got inside the branch “The branch was also invaluable to the thriving businesses of the town centre who will be forced to travel much further afield when banking their takings have you considered the impact upon the digitally disenfranchised I have been the Plaid Cymru spokesperson for Older People and know how much of a problem branch closures are.” the bank said it plans to introduce a community service working out of libraries and other places once a week for customers to see staff face-to-face and also highlighted that customers could withdraw and pay-in cash at post offices as well as visit the Caerphilly branch (despite its reduced opening hours) Mr Owen Griffiths said he was “deeply disappointed” by the response He said: “Banks like Santander make huge annual profits and their loyal customers are a big reason for this “This is a poor way of repaying people in Blackwood and the surrounding area for their custom over the years “I am deeply disappointed that large corporations such as Santander are quick to forget the customers – not to mention the staff in branches like Blackwood – who make their business the success it is “I would not be surprised if Santander customers now vote with their feet and take their business elsewhere.”Santander is the latest in a long line of national banks closing its branches and Lloyds have all closed outlets across Caerphilly County Borough in recent years Blackwood Spring Fair returns for a third year this weekend funfair rides and entertainment to High Street which has been organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council The event was first held in Blackwood in 2023, drawing 8,000 visitors to the town, before returning in 2024 – attracting 7,000 visitors Funding for the event comes from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund Eight men have been arrested and two roads remain closed after two separate fights broke out in Blackwood and Newbridge At around 2.45pm today (Thursday February 13) and paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service remain on site Superintendent Mike Preston said: “We’ve brought this disorder in Blackwood and Newbridge to its conclusion and there is no ongoing danger to the public “We currently have eight men in police custody at this time for offences linked to the disorder and they will be undergoing questioning after we understand the full extent of the injuries sustained “If you have any information on the identities of anyone involved or details that could assist our enquires then please contact us immediately WARNING: video embedded from Facebook contains bad language “This behaviour is completely unacceptable and we will take action against anyone intent on causing this level of harm and disorder in our communities.” or by contacting them via social media using log number Blackwood: 2500047958 and Newbridge: 2500047973 said: “This sort of behaviour is obviously not acceptable I’ve never known the likes of it before and it’s a stain on what was once a lovely little valley town but actions such as this will drag our name through the dirt I hope the police handle this without fear or favour and send a message to those involved.” Islwyn Senedd member Rhianon Passmore said she was “deeply disturbed” She said: “I commend Gwent Police for taking urgent action to safeguard law abiding citizens going about their business and the Welsh Ambulance Service for responding swiftly “It is simply unacceptable for the heart of our communities to experience disturbances at any time let alone during the day “I will be asking Gwent Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner for a briefing on what has taken place any possible causes and the proposed actions being taken to reassure the public.” Bank Santander has announced its Blackwood branch will be closing in June this year while Caerphilly’s will be reducing its hours Blackwood has been named in a list of 95 branch closures by the Spanish bank – which first entered the UK market in 2004 with its takeover of former building society Abbey National. National media reports have speculated whether the bank is gearing up for a UK exit Around 750 of its staff across the UK will be at risk of redundancy said the closures were down to changing customer behaviour In a statement they said: “As a business we must move with customers and balance our investment across all the places where we interact with customers to deliver the very best for them now and in the future “Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers.” The bank said it plans to roll out “community bankers” which can provide face-to-face help and support to customers Other banks which have closed local branches run similar schemes Santander is the latest in a longline of national banks closing its branches Blackwood councillor Kevin Etheridge said: “We have already lost HSBC and Barclays and this is another blow to the High Street Fellow councillor Nigel Dix said it was a “disappointing” decision by the bank He said: “Banks have an important role to play in the community but we’ll now have another empty shop This is not good for the town’s future.” Plaid Cymru Senedd Member for South Wales East said: “This is disappointing news for the town and the surrounding area Having worked in retail banking for much of my adult life I know how important bank branches are to a community “I actually worked in this branch briefly and I know how busy and how important it was to the people of Blackwood.  “Shoppers and nearby businesses rely on branches like this heavily and they are an anchor for much of the local economy “Bank branches are especially important to older people and people who “This closure – and the reduction of hours at the Caerphilly branch – is a retrograde move and I will be making representations to Santander over this.”  A new Chartist mural in Blackwood town centre has been completed remembering a key movement which helped bring about political change in the UK The work has been painted onto the side of the Flourmill pub Caerphilly County Borough Council worked with the manager and owner of the Flourmill building with the mural itself completed by Andy O’Rourke of Malarky Arts The mural reflects the Chartist movement and the key point in history in November 1839 when thousands of working-class men from the South Wales Valleys including a group from Blackwood led by Zephaniah Williams Chartism was a working class movement which emerged in 1836 in London It expanded rapidly across the country and was most active between 1838 and 1848 The aim of the Chartists was to gain political rights and influence for the working classes Their demands were widely publicized through their meetings and pamphlets The project was funded through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund which focuses on “fostering a sense of local pride and belonging” we are absolutely delighted with the quality of work that Andy has delivered and the positive reaction from the public.  “Andy has delivered similar projects for us in Bargoed and he worked exceptionally hard to design a long-lasting and fitting testament to the Chartist movement which was repeatedly highlighted as a desired theme in our discussions with stakeholders “It is anticipated that the artwork will instil a sense of pride amongst local residents and we would encourage people to visit Blackwood to see this wonderful piece of artwork for themselves.” They say it's never too late for a shower of rain 2025 represents a chance for a downpour of redemption The experienced right-hander is on a mission—hungry and laser-focused on reclaiming his place in the minds of regional fans and 2024 was a year to forget in red-ball cricket A dismal run in the West Indies Championship saw him score just 88 runs in nine innings for the Jamaica Scorpions a stretch that led to him losing the captaincy and This setback came just months after he had also lost his place in the West Indies Test squad Blackwood has approached the 2025 season with renewed energy and purpose And if the first round of the tournament is anything to go by he has every reason to believe that this could be the season that propels him back to international cricket Blackwood made his intentions clear in the opening round of the 2025 West Indies Championship delivering a match-defining century that piloted the Jamaica Scorpions to an emphatic 178-run victory over the Windward Islands Volcanoes at Arnos Vale Sports Complex Blackwood showcased a more measured and calculated approach marked his ninth first-class century and set the foundation for a decisive win in challenging conditions Blackwood has spent the past few months refining both his technique and mindset A key influence in his mental transformation has been his conversations with fellow West Indian cricketer That newfound clarity was evident against the Volcanoes where Blackwood followed up his first-innings century with a composed half-century in the second innings The twin knocks pushed him past the milestone of 8,000 first-class runs a feat he acknowledges but refuses to dwell on Eyes on the Prize – A Return to the West Indies Test Team While the personal milestones are gratifying Blackwood remains fixated on a larger goal—forcing his way back into the West Indies Test squad Leading by Example in a Young Scorpions Squad With three debutants in the Jamaica Scorpions lineup—Javelle Glen and 17-year-old leg-spinner Tamarie Redwood—Blackwood embraces the role of being a senior statesman in the team The Scorpions endured a difficult 2024 campaign Blackwood believes that this season brings renewed optimism especially on the back of a strong Super50 performance Next Challenge: The Leeward Islands Hurricanes Blackwood and the Jamaica Scorpions will now turn their attention to the Leeward Islands Hurricanes whom they face in their second match of the tournament at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua from February 5-8 it’s another opportunity to reaffirm his credentials The road to redemption has begun—now it’s all about consistency A former supermarket building which was once earmarked for a major redevelopment has been sold at auction for £125,000 Part of the old Somerfield building at Blackwood’s Market Place could now be turned into flats it is understood no planning applications have been submitted to the council at this stage was originally listed at a starting price of £100,000 four “eager” bidders were looking to secure the unit with 22 bids in total who was handling the sale for Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions said: “The versatile space offers excellent development potential with pre-drafted architect’s plans for conversion into 20 to 25 residential flats alongside a 4,500 sq ft retail unit ideal for a flagship shop “There are also architects’ plans showing the potential for development of 47 flats on the site.” Part of the site was redeveloped into a gym after planning permission was approved by Caerphilly Borough Council back in 2017 and this is unaffected. There was also a planning application submitted in 2019 to redevelop the site into 47 flats and an artisan market Private developers Faro Capital were behind the redevelopment The club rugby season is drawing to an exciting conclusion, as title races and promotion battles go down to the wire - while others are left playing for pride. It is written entirely from J.’s point of view, in the form of letters to non-existent confidantes (‘Dear So-and-So’), and the catharsis is all hers: There’s more than a little scorn for America here, as if Renata embodies a gluttonous nation. J. suggests that Monique is also repelled: ‘Monique has a beautiful slim little figure … Sometimes I see Monique looking at Renata with real terror as if she fears that at any moment this enormous girl might give birth to some kind of colossal messiah of an instant cake.’ ‘I’m manic, and Caroline’s panic,’ Lowell quipped. As in The Stepdaughter, the living arrangements were claustrophobic. Four months into their relationship, Lowell had a mental breakdown and locked Blackwood in their flat, forbidding her to call anyone: ‘It was the longest three days of my life,’ she said. According to Schoenberger, Caroline agreed ‘to consider his breakdown their affliction, not just his’. Councillors representing Blackwood have been keen to stress that such outbreaks of violence are incredibly rare Cllr Andrew Farina-Childs said: “Despite the unacceptable issues that have occurred in our town recently where Nigel Dix and I along with Blackwood Town Council have raised concerns with the police I would just like to remind people that all the shops cafes and the cinema are still open for business and would encourage people to still come to Blackwood.” Eight men have appeared at Cardiff Crown Court charged with violent disorder after two mass brawls in Blackwood and Newbridge last month A previous court hearing described the brawls as part of a “turf war” between rival barbers over plans for a new shop in Newbridge The eight men charged with violent disorder are: Bave Hamed At around 2.45pm on Thursday February 13 were granted conditional bail with a trial date set for March next year Six-thousand visitors came to Blackwood earlier this month as the town hosted its annual spring fair which was organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council was held on Saturday March 8 – the busiest day in the town so far this year including food and craft fairs and funfair rides It was the first in a number of events set to be held in the town centre over the course of 2025 with Blackwood Beach Party and a Christmas market being held later in the year.  praised the spring fair and said: “It was a real privilege for the team to play a part in the successful return of the fair which gave us opportunities to listen to the public about their concerns reassure them about the work we’re doing and also celebrate the great community spirit the town has – which was fully on show on Saturday.” said: “We were delighted to welcome lots of visitors of all ages and had a busy day filled with creativity Blackwood councillor Kevin Etheridge was also positive describing the fair as a “major success” The event was first held in Blackwood in 2023, drawing 8,000 visitors to the town, before returning in 2024 – attracting 7,000 visitors The leader of a council opposition group says firmer assurances should be provided about the future of Blackwood Miners’ Institute the iconic cultural venue which has faced closure because of spending cuts who leads the Independent group on Caerphilly council says he is not satisfied with the authority’s rescue plan aimed at securing the venue’s survival Blackwood Miners’ Institute (BMI) is described on the Welsh Government’s Visit Wales website as “one of the most exciting performing arts venues in south Wales creating and presenting the highest quality professional and community arts for a diverse range of audiences and participants Each year the theatre hosts hundreds of events and participatory activities spanning drama ensuring everybody can experience something to suit their tastes.” But Caerphilly council decided it could no longer afford to keep it open and announced plans to close it Now it has been temporarily rescued following an additional grant of £210,738 from the Arts Council of Wales Under a 14-point plan proposed by the council’s cabinet the institute would leave the council’s ownership and be taken over by an independent trust by July 2026 “We are working hard to ensure we can secure a bright new future for this historic venue without the need for high levels of public subsidy This strategy not only aims to secure the financial sustainability of the venue but also focuses on creating a roadmap toward greater independence from the local authority over the next few years “With the 14-point plan now formally adopted we are 100% focussed on working with the transition group to deliver on the objectives.” the council’s cabinet members collectively act as the trustees of a trust owned by the authority The report sought approval from the cabinet to endorse a delegation of powers so that any necessary practical steps can be actioned by officers in the Blackwood Miners’ Institute (BMI) Transition Project Group towards the establishment of a new organisational structure The council report states: “As the sole corporate trustee the local authority has a legal obligation to manage the charity in compliance with its governing document it is required to account for the charity’s finances in accordance with the provisions of the Charity Act 2011 the local authority must also act in the best interests of the charity “The council in its capacity as a local authority is under financial pressures to save £45m and as trustee … is exploring a new approach to its operation with the aim of running independently of the local authority an external adviser has been engaged and consulted working closely with officers on behalf of the trustees to explore alternative delivery models “Following the successful application for the Arts Council of Wales ‘Resilience and Jobs Protection’ funding BMI is well-positioned to ensure a seamless transition and achieve greater autonomy from the council the report goes on to state how Audit Wales had raised a matter of concern in their independent examiner’s report on the financial accounts regarding the cash and cash equivalent balances within the Balance sheet It stated: “The BMI finances are managed by the council with all transactions recorded on the council’s ledger and all cashflows through the council’s bank account This has meant a separate cash flow statement has not been prepared for the charity as all cashflows go through the council’s main bank account This issue must be addressed and rectified to enable the successful progression of the 14-point plan is therefore required to endorse a delegation of powers so that any necessary practical steps can be actioned by officers in the BMI Transition Project Group towards the establishment of a new organisational structure include: Promoting public awareness and participation in the arts Encouraging the education and development of unemployed individuals focusing on their mental and spiritual capacities while also addressing the Institute’s responsibility in preventing drug and alcohol abuse the council has a legal obligation to manage the charity in strict accordance with its trust deed and to act solely in furtherance of its stated objectives the council is required to account for and report on the charity’s activities separately all charities must produce annual statements of accounts will be aware that the future of BMI was uncertain in 2024 with a proposal by the council as local authority to mothball the venue in December 2024 to save the £347,000 subsidy it makes to the BMI in order to address its ongoing financial difficulties there was significant public opposition to the proposal and it became apparent that there was a conflict of interest arising as a result of the council acting in its capacity as the local authority and the council in its capacity as corporate trustee the cabinet is legally obligated to act solely in the best interests of the trust and this report is actively exploring new ways to ensure the venue remains operational The first steps have been to develop a transition strategy and various funding options and delivery models have been explored for BMI “The work undertaken to identify alternative funding sources and operational models will be pivotal in ensuring the long-term viability of BMI and its ability to continue serving the community without ongoing reliance on council subsidies This matter will be fully investigated by the appointed feasibility consultant who will assess the viability of these options and provide recommendations for the future operational structure of BMI.” said: “I think we need greater reassurance about the course of action that is being proposed with the cabinet having responsibility for the institute but also for the council budget as a whole We need to be sure that this conflict is properly managed and that all legal safeguards are in place “We also need to ensure that the future of the institute is wholly secure as a cultural venue for the future we will lose control and that could be more difficult to achieve I believe we need greater assurances and should take time to ensure we get the right solution.” Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_2" ).setAttribute( "value" Connect what has been called “a victory for common sense” which was controversially at risk of being mothballed will receive £210,000 from the Welsh Government effectively allowing it to remain open for at least a further year Caerphilly County Borough Council leader Sean Morgan said the “significant” funding announcement is “positive news” for the cultural venue The government support is part of £157 million in new spending which First Minister Eluned Morgan said will support various “priority areas” nationwide Arts and cultural organisations will receive an additional £1m on top of £1.5m announced in September the £210,000 for Blackwood Miners’ Institute represents the third largest handout – and the biggest awarded to a non-national organisation who organised the march and a petition against the mothballing plan called the new funding commitment a “victory for common sense” “I’m overjoyed for the people who attend the ‘Stute and the staff,” he added “Everyone has worked really hard to try to save it “I’m pleased the Welsh Government has recognised the arts and heritage in the Sirhowy Valley.” Caerphilly Council unveiled the mothballing proposal in the summer, prompting an ensure that we can secure the best outcome for this historic cultural venue.” He added: “I’m sure the whole community will welcome this positive news which demonstrates our commitment to exploring all options to secure a bright new future for Blackwood Miners’ Institute.” leader of the Independent group in Blackwood described the news as “fantastic” before adding: “Myself and Cllr Farina-Childs have already met with officers at the council to discuss the future of the institute “We’d rather it stay within the council’s hands but if they’re determined to hand it to the charitable sector then we want to be a part of that transition process and should be used to invest in the future of the miners to make it a viable business.” said the news “will come as a huge relief for the entire town” “We know the venue has been at the heart of the community for a century and it falls on all our shoulders now to forge it a sustainable future,” she added Also welcoming the news was Rhiannon Passmore warning The event was due to be held in the town centre on Saturday November 23 Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We have no option but to cancel the event as safety is paramount to the organisation of all our events and in order to give traders suppliers and visitors adequate time to rearrange their plans.” The local authority continued: “Please remember to support Blackwood town planned events in Caerphilly town centre on November 30 Lantern making workshops at the Twyn Community Centre in Caerphilly on Saturday November 23 and Sunday November 24 are still going ahead the council has confirmed – alongside a similar lantern making event in St Gwladys Church in Bargoed on Saturday A senior police officer has vowed to tackle “mindless” and “unacceptable” antisocial behaviour in Blackwood – with the town’s deputy mayor saying it “has become worse than the Bronx” Gwent Police chief inspector Stevie Warden said officers have increased patrols in the town following a recent rise in antisocial behaviour – and confirmed several people have been arrested A new ‘multi-agency operation’ is now in place in the town centre to combat the issue CI Warden said: “Our officers continue to work with our community safety partnership to do all we can to tackle antisocial behaviour in the town is one of our known areas for antisocial behaviour and that is factored into our daily patrols and tailored Op Lumley plans.” The issue has been raised by town council deputy mayor Cllr George Etheridge who compared Blackwood to the Bronx area of New York City Cllr Etheridge said the problem was “out of control” with a recent town council meeting disrupted by “a group of youths who refused to leave the building” He also said elderly residents “have complained about not feeling safe” at the bus station while bus drivers are “being abused and having things thrown at them” Fellow Blackwood councillor Kevin Etheridge meanwhile has called for a Public Spaces Protection Order to be put in place to deal with the matter CI Warden said: “We are aware of the recent reports of disorder over the last few weeks and councillors’ concerns and we continue to work collaboratively with partner agencies to tackle this “In the last two weeks we’ve issued numerous dispersal orders arrested and charged a 17-year-old girl for breaching a community protection notice and we will continue to carry out regular patrols in the area and take appropriate action against antisocial behaviour.” CI Warden reassured there has been a decrease in antisocial behaviour in Blackwood over recent days but reiterated “our work does not stop here” “Tackling the issue goes beyond just policing,” CI Warden explained guardians and carers to consider; do you know where your children are socialising and do you know if they’re involved in what is being reported to us “And we urge them to have conversations to help these young people understand that not only are these actions having a negative impact on those around them that any offences committed by them could negatively impact their futures – whether that’s stopping them from getting their dream job Greenfields
