Residents spoke of their shock today after the fire, at a property in Shrewsbury Close on the Mossley Estate in Bloxwich which happened around 9.15pm on Monday night
A number were evacuated after the blaze, which spread to neighbouring properties - Walsall Council housed some overnight and others took shelter in nearby St Thomas' Church.
Ten crews comprising over 60 firefighters fought the blaze last night - one remained on scene this morning (Tuesday) along with investigators.
The neighbour living next door to the house which caught fire, who didn't want to be named, said he was walking back to the property after taking his wife to work when the house 'exploded,' sending debris towards him.
He said: "It was very dramatic I saw two people running from the property but it has caused extensive damage to our property as well and Walsall Council were really good in arranging overnight accommodation. I'm not sure what is going to happen now."
Donna Titley, the church warden at St Thomas' on the adjacent Cresswell Crescent said her and the team were cleaning on Monday night when they heard a 'massive bang' and came out to see a 'scene of devastation,'
She said: "There was obviously a lot of people had come out of their homes and they were in shock. Not to mention the people on the row of houses which were damaged,
"We kept the church door open for them and anyone who wanted to get a break or a cup of tea and didn't leave there until 2am. I just hope everyone is safe and well and my heart goes out to all those affected."
This morning, a fire crew remained on site with an investigation continuing, along with police officers and staff from Walsall Council who are continuing to support residents.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We were called following a fire at an address in Shrewsbury Close, Bloxwich, at around 9.30pm yesterday (Monday).
"Two men were later found in Willenhall with burn injuries. They were taken to hospital where they remain.
"We are working alongside fire service investigators to establish the cause of the blaze."
A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 9.28pm to Shrewsbury Close following reports of an explosion and sent an ambulance, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic and the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.
“On arrival, crews found one man who did not wish to be assessed and was discharged at the scene.
“We received a second call at 11.31pm to Lower Lichfield Street in Willenhall.
“Two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic were sent to the scene.
“On arrival, crews found two men who had suffered burn injuries.
“The first had suffered critical injuries and, following advanced trauma care from medics, was conveyed under emergency conditions to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with MERIT travelling on board to continue treatment en route.
“Ambulance staff treated the second man for serious injuries before conveying him to the same hospital.”
Ten West Midlands Fire Service crews respond following multiple 999 calls
At 9.26pm on Monday 28 April, Staffordshire and West Midlands Fire Control started to receive multiple 999 calls reporting an incident in Shrewsbury Close, Bloxwich.
Nine fire crews, our Technical Rescue Unit, a hydraulic aerial platform and a drone were mobilised.
Our first resources arrived within five minutes of being mobilised.
They were met with a challenging scene – a severe fire involving an extensively damaged two-storey, mid-terraced house. The fire had also affected neighbouring properties.
Several residents had got themselves to safety before we arrived, and others were evacuated by emergency services as a precaution.
Firefighters led one man to safety from a property. He is understood to have been assessed and discharged at the scene by the ambulance service.
A local church provided shelter, and volunteers from the Red Cross also offered support.
Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used hose reels and main jets to tackle the fire, which had been extinguished by around 11pm.
Colleagues from the police also attended, as well as the council and utility companies.
We expect to have a presence at the scene throughout the night.
Our investigators will be working to establish the cause.
We would like to thank local people for their patience and understanding as we continue our work at the scene.
No hotspots or signs of fire have been identified since the early hours of the morning. A drone has been flown to confirm this.
We continue to work alongside police colleagues to establish the cause of the fire.

I knew it wasn't a normal sound so I ran outside and could see straight away these flames taking hold
These two guys then ran away from the house and up the street - one was in a blue t-shirt
"And then from then on it was just a case of the fire spreading and engulfing the house for about ten minutes before the fire service got here

Eighty-five WHG homes will be selected from the area based on their energy efficiency
and will each receive free upgrades including external wall insulation
Up to 75 privately-owned households in the area will also be offered bespoke retrofit packages through contractor Surefire MS (SMS)
with grants covering the majority of the costs
Up to 52 local jobs will be created as part of the scheme including roles for retrofit assessors
25 apprenticeships and 43 training placements will be offered in partnership with Walsall College
An Energy Hub will also be open to offering retrofit advice and demonstrating the benefits of retrofit works
we’re proving that tackling climate change and inequality go hand in hand
“This project is a cornerstone of our commitment to creating safe
sustainable communities where people thrive.”
said: “It’s great to be working with WHG on this landmark initiative for Bloxwich and the borough of Walsall
more efficient homes for local people and will create jobs and opportunities
said: “Getting to net zero takes a community effort – all of us working together to drive down energy costs and carbon emissions
“The UK’s transition to net zero can only be successful if we take everyone with us – cutting emissions while cutting bills for our residents.”
Walsall Council has been unable to provide a date as to when the play area at King George V park in Bloxwich will reopen
The closure followed damage to a children’s climbing apparatus and rubbish bin after they were both set on fire in October 2024
The damaged equipment has since been removed from the park
and the council said it is waiting on an installation date from the supplier of the new equipment
The park has remained closed ‘in the interest of public safety’ but the council has been unable to explain why the park is still considered dangerous
Despite the warm sunny spells and the Easter holidays around the corner
no date has been provided for the reopening of the park
A spokesperson for Walsall Council
said: “The play area at King George V in Bloxwich has been closed while some of the play equipment is replaced
“New play equipment has been ordered and we are waiting to confirm an installation date with the supplier.”
In the same month that the play area in Bloxwich was targeted by fire
part of the play area at Reedswood Park was also destroyed by fire
Walsall Council said the replacement costs at both sites were estimated to cost taxpayers £95,000
Pat Collins Memorial Gardens and Promenade Gardens is expected to start next month
The upgrades are part of a £5million Greening Bloxwich programme
paid for by the government’s national Towns Deal funding
The Greening Bloxwich project will also see improvements to King George V Playing Fields and Leamore Park
At a council meeting earlier this week, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing councillor Gary Flint
Pat Collins Memorial Gardens and Promenade Gardens
He also said the transformation of King George V Playing Fields will make it a ‘visitor destination’ putting ‘Bloxwich on the map’
Councillor Flint said: “We will have a new pavilion
a real accessible open space that will hopefully put Bloxwich on the map
“That site will become a visitor destination for this borough and will become a gem in the crown of our green spaces.”
No timeframe was provided as to when the improvements will be carried out to King George’s
or as to when the children’s play area will be reopened
In response to the closed play area at King George’s
councillor Flint said: “There was a delay in the installation of the vandalised play equipment because we were working with police and other partners around the potential culprits of that
I can’t go into too much detail about that here
“There is a contract about to be awarded this week
which will see the installation of the replacement equipment.”
in collaboration with the Canal & River Trust
has brought Baileys Pool back into community use.
The work was made possible thanks to a £40,000 grant from Enovert Community Trust through the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF)
This funding was supported by £8,000 from the Canal and River Trust and £7,000 through Walsall Council’s Healthy Spaces Team.
This is thanks to improvements to the pathway around the pool
infrastructure removal and litter picking.
It is not just residents who have benefited from the work either
as the biodiversity in the area has sprung into life after significant work was carried out to clear the pool itself.
Flytipping cost Walsall taxpayers £336,000 in 2023/24
with more than half of the bill coming from just five wards
Willenhall South and Birchills Leamore accounted for 53 per cent of the entire expenditure for the borough
The three least offending wards, Aldridge North, Pelsall and Streetly each account for just 1 percent
Leader of the labour group at Walsall Council, councillor Matt Ward
has called on the authority to ‘name and shame’ the culprits and publish the names of those who are fined
Councillor Ward also called for more CCTV cameras to be installed and for officers to be deployed in areas which are known hot spots
Councillor Ward said: “The council needs to get more proactive in challenging their own communities and getting them to come forward with information
the council needs to be more proactive in naming and shaming people and challenging people’s behaviour
“If you talk to any of the volunteer litter pickers
they’ve given up on some of the streets which are in the top wards.”
A spokesperson for Walsall Council said tackling fly-tipping is a priority for the authority
They said: “The council does not disclose details relating to the deployment of CCTV cameras
“Fly-tipping is a priority for the council
As part of our response to tackle fly-tipping
including the use of crime scene tape to highlight the impact of fly-tipping
“Fixed penalty notices (FPNs) are governed by a statutory framework
so cases referred to other courts will be redirected back and not succeed
Where an FPN is taken to the magistrate’s court
details of the case are made public in the same way as other court cases.”

we’d be happy to host you at the station to see the plaque in person."
The refurbishment work was undertaken by the Railway Heritage Trust
who commissioned the specialist restoration company
to bring the inscription back to pristine condition
The company also created a bespoke hardwood frame as backing for the plaque

A shoplifter who preyed on Wolverhampton businesses has been locked up after committing nine offences in less than a month
was arrested after stealing goods totalling around £850 and often threatening staff as he took items like cheese
West Midlands Police said he had systematically targeted two stores in Willenhall Road despite already being subject to a restraining order and a criminal behaviour order banning him from entering those premises
His spree ran from January 21 through to February 9 before Maher
was arrested by officers in Fallings Park on February 10

Maher admitted nine counts of shop theft as well as breaches to a community behaviour order and restraining order

Staff and patients at Bloxwich Hospital have spoken of their emotional tie to the hospital and of their move to a new £24.3m unit at Walsall
They held a 'final farewell' lunch at the hospital, which closes its doors today (Wednesday, February 5), with the opening of the Dorothy Pattison Older Adults Unit which is situated next to the Manor Hospital
The new unit is designed to provide high-quality inpatient care for older adults with dementia and functional mental health conditions
and recovery-focused environment for those in need
One of the last patients to be housed at Bloxwich
and the first to move into the new unit is Ivan Glover from Aldridge who had been at Bloxwich Hospital for two and a half months
He said: "It won't be a long stay at the new place as it hasn't been here but I have loved every minute of it at Bloxwich - the staff are wonderful
the food is great and there is a real family atmosphere about the place
"I have seen pictures of the Dorothy Pattison unit and it looks fantastic with self contained units where you can have a shower or a bath and overall more space and facilities to make you comfortable - I am just glad the same staff are coming over as well."
Bloxwich Hospital was purchased by Walsall Town Council in 1927 and first opened as a maternity unit - a number of the staff who work there were born there
Jackie Moylan is the manager of the Linden Ward which is also going to be the name of one of the wards at the new facility - she was born at Bloxwich Hospital
started there as a newly qualified nurse in 1999 and has done over 20 years on the site
She said: "Since I first started here as a newly qualified nurse we were told it was closing and now it is finally happening
"It has been quite emotional to see the removal team come in and it finally hit home that this is the end and there has been a few tears because a lot of the staff have been here a long time
"But we know it is for the best for our patients and there is a family feel to Bloxwich which we hope to take to the new building which looks fantastic and has more room and facilities for staff and the people they treat
Melissa James, Operational Manager for Older Adults started work in 2013 as a newly qualified nurse within the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust at Edward Street Hospital
She said: "As much as there is a emotional attachment to Bloxwich
it was a confined space for staff and the patient group within dorms and all the challenges that presented
"It is exciting to move to a new build which will provide that space and also the dignity and privacy they need to thrive in and hopefully return to their own homes or to another facility depending on their needs
the staff have done an amazing job at Bloxwich but it was within the constraints of space which doesn't help when there are patient incidents and even having a staff area where they can have an adequate break is going to be something to be welcomed
as well as them able to provide adequate care more easily

A brand-new public toilet has been unveiled in Bloxwich town centre following calls from residents
A pledge by Walsall Council in the 2021 election promised public toilets for the borough’s local centres and Bloxwich is the first to receive them
with future plans to roll them out in Willenhall after a trial period
The new toilet is located on the high street by the main bus stop and is now open for business
The unit is the first self-cleaning toilet to operate in the UK in 18 years and once it has been used
it locks for a brief period to automatically clean the floor and toilet before the next use
The toilet can be managed remotely and will automatically unlock for use between the hours of 7am-8pm
The units are built with the capability to take payment however there are no plans at present to charge
Associate Leader of Walsall Council said: “Residents have been asking for public toilets in our town and district centres for a while which is why we made the promise to invest in public toilets in 2021
“Since that pledge, we have seen the opening of new public toilets and changing place toilets in the Saddlers Centre, as well as changing place toilets in Bloxwich library and Darlaston Town Hall and I’m pleased to see the public toilet now up and running in Bloxwich.”
The new public toilet is fully accessible and includes baby change facilities
The Bloxwich High Street unit will serve as a pilot
and the council will monitor how much the toilet is used and the maintenance required
