"The dog is also reported to have attacked another dog, seriously harming the animal.
“The ambulance service attended and both children were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries."

THERE are plans to preserve an important piece of Second World War history in Barnsley which has been listed as being ‘at risk’.
The anti-aircraft battery, also known as station H17, in Bolton-upon-Dearne contains numerous small buildings which were built ahead of the Battle of Britain to help fend off Luftwaffe attacks on Sheffield.
It is not believed a shot was fired from the site but is still considered a salient part of the town’s history.
Some of the remaining buildings, which are made out of concrete and breeze blocks, have been targeted by vandals and there is some decay but they are considered salvageable.
Nature is taking over at the site off Lowfield Road with and close to the Adwick Washlands nature reserve.
The listed monument was descibed as being ‘at risk’ by Historic England earlier this year.
A Historic England spokesperson said: “This scheduled monument in Barnsley is a surviving example of a Second World War anti-aircraft gunsite.
“The site is currently on our Heritage at Risk Register due to tree and scrub growth, and decay across the site.
“We are in contact with the local council and are working with them to consider options to protect this important site.”
The Historic England website confirms the remaining buildings include ‘the functional core of the station’.
They include the command post, gun emplacements, gun holdfasts, Nissen magazine and the service track.
Barnsley Council have also confirmed the talks but the Chronicle understands progress could be sped up with the formation of a group of volunteers who would be willing to help manage the site.
Councillor Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “The anti-aircraft battery in Bolton-upon-Dearne is on privately owned land and also on Historic England’s risk register.
“We’ve approached Historic England to engage in discussions about what we can do and what the landowner can do to safeguard the future of this important monument.”
Local history enthusiasts, Ian Harley and Melvyn Lunn, have recently visited the site and feel the time is right for action.
Melvyn said: “Personally, given that the site is one of only 60 remaining deemed ‘well preserved’ out of nearly 1,000 sites built during World War Two, I think it is an asset to Barnsley’s historical heritage and should be preserved, and it’s existence publicised, at all costs.”
Ian added: “Station H17, with its four gun emplacements and command post, is a rare and well-preserved example of around 1,000 anti-aircraft batteries built to protect British cities from Luftwaffe bombing raids.
“While constructed to protect us, it is now in need of protection itself.
“It could, however, have a new life, as a visitor attraction reminding people of darker days when the skies were filled with the wings of death machines rather than wings of wildfowl visiting its surrounding nature reserves.”
A FATHER and daughter filmmaking duo from Bolton-upon-Dearne are celebrating again this week after picking up more accolades.
Dean and Rebecca Sills took a break from editing their Laurel and Hardy documentary to film their work on a Christmas music video.
Dean wrote the lyrics and the pair filmed and edited it in just four hours.
The story behind the music video is all about people who put their Christmas trees up way too early told by a singing bauble called Barry.
After the two of them submitted the music video into film festivals, it picked up a number of awards including best original song in a music video at the Mokkho International Film Festival in India.
The music video had its premiere in Florida at the Life Screenings One Minute Film Festival.
Dean said: “The feedback from the festival in the USA was really good they found it goofy, fun to watch and it reminded them of the Chipmunks.
“Which is good because we recorded it to sound like the Chipmunks and Pinky and Perky.
“As a child I remember going to my grandparents at Christmas and playing a Perky and Perky Christmas EP vinyl which I believe was my uncle Graham’s.
“We would love to do a Christmas charity CD maybe next year based on the Pinky and Perky EP with Barry singing a few Christmas songs including the one we recorded this year.”

THREE local thugs who were involved in the disgraceful scenes at the Holiday Inn in Manvers earlier this month have been jailed.
Niven Matthewman, 19, of Albert Street, Swinton, and 48-year-old Dylan White, of The Farmstead in Bolton-upon-Dearne, joined in on a violent attack on a police dog van.
Their actions left the two officers and police dog inside the vehicle fearful for their safety due to the immense rocking of the van.
The handler of the police dog inside the van had to watch from the crowd, worried for his dog’s safety.
In his personal victim impact statement, he explained how he had ‘great concern for those inside and my dog’.
Matthewman handed himself into the police, admitting he was ashamed of his behaviour, following an online appeal.
He pleaded guilty to violent disorder on August 14 and was sentenced to two years and eight months in a young offender institution and handed a criminal behaviour order for ten years at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
White was also sentences to two years in prison last Friday at the same court.
Another thug who has faced justice for his actions was Nathan Palmer.
The 29-year-old, of New Street in Hemingfield, was part of a group who aggressively engaged with the officers protecting the hotel.
During the scenes of violence, Palmer commandeered an officer’s riot shield.
Palmer pleaded guilty to violent disorder at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday and was sentenced on Monday to two years and eight months in prison.
WORK totalling £3m to transform the historic Dearne Playhouse has now been completed.
The project is part of the Goldthorpe Town Deal, which secured £23.1m investment from the government’s Towns Fund to help regenerate, renew and revitalise Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and Bolton-upon-Dearne.
The 101-year-old Playhouse, formerly the Miners’ Welfare Hall, is a cultural cornerstone of the Dearne and its restoration will ensure it continues to be a focal point for the community for generations to come.
Work began last year and the second phase which included new CCTV, new baseman and redecoration of the auditorium began in February and recently finished.
The Playhouse works, which took seven months to complete, have been carried out by O and P Construction and overseen by Barnsley Council.
Access roads in neighbouring Welfare Park are being resurfaced, pathways restored and new public artwork installed.
Extra car parking has been added, and there are plans for 72 more spaces next to the site, subject to planning approval.
Matthew Stephens, chair of the Goldthorpe Town Deal Board, said: “The completion of this major refurbishment is a significant milestone in preserving the heritage of Dearne Playhouse while creating new opportunities for community engagement.
“It’s wonderful to see how the investment has rejuvenated this historic venue and provided an amazing space for everyone to come together.
“I am delighted that the works for this fabulous project were undertaken by local contractors, providing jobs for local people.”
Julie Medlam, manager of the Dearne Playhouse, added: “We are thrilled with these works and the possibilities they open up for future community involvement.
“The new facilities will greatly benefit local artists, musicians and theatre groups, making the Playhouse even more vibrant and inclusive.
“I look forward to welcoming everyone back to see it for themselves.
“We can’t wait to raise the curtain on a new era for our much-loved theatre.”
Restoration of the Playhouse aligns with the objectives of the Goldthorpe Town Deal to regenerate and aid growth in Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and Bolton-upon-Dearne.
This has already delivered the new Horse and Groom Town Square in the heart of Goldthorpe.
Other projects underway include new sustainable housing, improvements at Phoenix Park, and work to unlock economic development and create new jobs

A FOUR-YEAR row between Barnsley Council’s planning board and a housing developer has finally ended - after a government department sided with the local authority’s decision to refuse permission for a new estate
responsible for two completed sites off Lowfield Road
had initially been refused consent for a proposed third phase due to an argument over the material used on its driveways
which were a breach of planning conditions to the tarmac alternative agreed on
and resulted in an £8,000 fine being issued to Gleeson following an appearance at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court
The prosecution resulted in Gleeson writing to its Barnsley residents giving them the choice of receiving a cash sum to maintain the gravel drive or opt for tarmac to be used - a stipulation insisted on by the council
Gleeson then announced that the cash sum was being dropped in favour of every drive having a tarmac surface following ‘further discussions’ held with the council
who warned more court action could have been pursued if a deal was not struck
However a resubmitted bid for phase three at the site with permitted tarmac drives - consisting of 97 homes - was still rejected by the council’s planning board due to road safety concerns
A subsequent appeal to the Planning Inspectorate - which has the power to overrule the council - proved unsuccessful
Inspector Edwin Maund’s investigation report said traffic lights at Lowfield Road’s railway bridge - promised upon completion of phase two at a cost of £210,000 - have not come to fruition
“From the evidence before me and the site visit that I undertook
I was able to see the current arrangements for the road bridge over the railway line
and the adjacent footbridge which serves the railway,” it said
“I was also able to observe that the details for highway improvements expected to be delivered consequent to phase two have not yet been carried out
while the current footways on the bridge are below modern standards
“It is in my view reasonable to expect improvements when there is a policy requiring a signalised junction
“The increase in traffic and pedestrian flows across this bridge will only be likely to exacerbate the identified shortcomings of the present arrangements
“This pedestrian bridge has been designed to modern standards and allows a step-free access away from the road
“Even if I were to accept the appellant’s argument that this achieves appropriate
it does not resolve the obvious shortcomings associated with the footway across the road bridge
is still used by the majority of pedestrians - the increase that the development would create
would be likely to generate an increase in usage of both routes without addressing the problem
“I do not regard this as satisfactory.”
was followed by a 58-house neighbouring estate
but Gleeson’s planned final phase would have used access points would have been taken via Prior Croft
COMMUNITIES said to be in the grip of organised crime gangs have been told to expect more proactive work to rid drugs from vulnerable areas
South Yorkshire Police’s new violent crime tasking force
began working in Goldthorpe and Bolton-upon-Dearne after bosses argued that something needed to be done to stop armed gangs - whose members are said to be behind rising drug-related reports - from recruiting youngsters in order to peddle substances in deprived areas
the team raided a property last week and recovered a haul of Class A drugs - as well as thousands of pounds in cash - before arresting a 30-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of possession with intent to supply
Although both have been released under investigation
Detective Inspector Steve Smith hailed the result as a success and promised the public in affected communities to expect more proactive work
“Carrying out warrants to disrupt suspected organised criminality is only one element of what we are doing,” he said
“It is a key part - we want people to know just how determined we are to continue this fight directly against criminals and suspected gang members in this area
we will identify you and could be knocking on your door soon
“Residents should not have to live in fear
or have concerns about organised crime where they live
and we are regularly working with the local community to address these issues and respond to their concerns.”
originate from Sheffield but have infiltrated communities such as Goldthorpe and Bolton-upon-Dearne and were identified by Det Insp Smith
“PSB (Pitsmoor Shotta Boys) are well-known
their activity is illegal and we won’t tolerate it as they bring misery to the communities which they have targeted,” he added
“Unfortunately communities on the Barnsley and Rotherham border are close together and it’s these areas which have seen members dispersed
“The current problems in Barnsley relate to Bolton-upon-Dearne and Goldthorpe
so that’s where our team of officers have been during the crackdown
“PSB members have gained a foothold in communities and it’s our job to stop that from happening
by either dissuading young gang members or dismantling what remains
along with tremendous support from the local community
“These criminals are targeting the young and the vulnerable to do their dirty work
“But the message from us is clear - they’ll get fed up before we do
“I would urge the public to keep supporting us and use Crimestoppers to report any criminal activity

Two teenagers have been called 'heroes' after they jumped in the way of a moving train to stop a man from killing himself
The friends were waiting for the last train home on Saturday (25 May) when they saw the man in a sleeping bag on the Bolton-upon Dearn station platform
Freddie Corbett, 15 and Harley Hollingworth, 16, jumped onto the tracks and pulled the man to safety in South Yorkshire, UK
Harley told the Mirror: "I wasn't worried about the train
I just wanted to make sure Freddie got him off the tracks."
The man got out of his sleeping bag while they were on the platform
saying: "I'm going to kill myself tonight."
Freddie responded: "You're not doing that mate."
The teenagers said the train's headlights were visible
with Freddie estimating that it would have pulled into the station just 45 seconds after they pulled the man off the tracks
So despite the threat to their own lives with the train so close by
Freddie and Harley jumped onto the tracks to save his life
with the former calling the brave act as 'just natural instinct'
Both sets of parents said they were proud of their sons' bravery and quick-thinking
stating: "He's just a typical grumpy teenager but clearly you can see he has a heart of gold..
I'm still overwhelmed to be honest."
some members of their families were not best pleased
as Freddie revealed: "My grandma said later: 'You stupid idiot
I hope he [the man] gets some help now."
Gary Robinson, who works for Network Rail, re-iterated that the boys saved the man's life, paying tribute to the pair on social media
"Called out tonight to a male with intent to self-harm on the railway… these two lads were his angels," he began
"Dragged him off the railway… sat with him talking till I got there and make no mistakes..
"Kids get a bad press but with humanity like those lads [have] shown tonight we are in safe hands
"These two lads are a credit to their parents and I can't speak highly enough about them
If you see them buy them a J20 (not old enough for pints yet)."
He concluded by reminding people of the Samaritans helpline: "Anyone feeling like things are getting too much please call 116 123 where someone will listen without judgement
If you’ve been affected by any of these issues and want to speak to someone in confidence

Ings Lane in Bolton-upon-Dearne is now a home to rugby all-year-around after the formation of a rugby union team
Throughout the summer months it’s the headquarters of burgeoning rugby league club Dearne Valley Bulldogs but it is not laying dormant in the winter months any longer with Dearne Valley RUFC now based there in what is their maiden season
The club have five wins from their five matches so far
It’s the same level as neighbouring Wath’s 2nd XV
“We are a group of players who used to play years ago but for one reason or another fell out with the game,” he said
“We wanted to start playing again as a group and not go off in different directions
So forming a new club was the best way to go about it
“They are predominantly from this sort of area (the Dearne Valley) so we identified Ings Lane as being ideal
“We are sitting pretty at the minute
Our plan is to keep growing the club and setting up a second team in the years to come
A lot of our players are in their mid to late 40s
It’s good to get them back into the game.”
The club has also benefited from drafting in rugby league players from the Bulldogs
Their more direct running style has resulted in them being useful in the 15-man game as either centres or wingers
Bulldogs’ president Duncan Henderson sees the relationship as being mutually beneficial
“They approached us and it made a lot of sense,” he said
“I cannot see why it can’t work
They are obviously two different games but the coaches on both sides can work together.”

“When I first saw him I thought I might be able to grab a knife and protect myself - I had to tell myself to stop and be sensible,” she added
“I went along with it until he’d gone and I could call the police
“Then I reached out to my children - my sons were all down in a shot
“There’s not much you can do but carry on.”
A 42-year-old man has since been arrested in connection with the crime and released on bail
Pat has been in touch with her local councillor Abi Moore
Coun Moore added: “Hard-working and vulnerable people yet again are being targeted by a mindless minority who continue to try and ruin our community for the rest of us
“These recent events remind us why we need to work collaboratively with the police to root out criminals within our area
“If any residents are ever worried about criminal activity
please don’t hesitate to contact South Yorkshire Police as well as your local councillors.”
A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “We were called at 11.44pm last Friday evening to reports of a robbery on Dearne Road
“It is reported that a man broke into a premise on the road
threatening the victim with a knife before taking a quantity of cash
“A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery
assault of an emergency worker and provocation of violence
“He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries
“Enquiries remain ongoing and officers are asking for anyone with information that could help their investigation to get in touch by calling 101 and quoting incident number 1043 of April 12
The ITV host spoke to teenagers Freddie Corbett and Harley Hollingworth who recounted their story about saving a man in distress at Bolton-upon-Dearne train station
The heroic teens leapt onto the railway tracks at a train station in South Yorkshire to save a man
just moments before a train was set to pull in

Freddie told Dermot and co-host Josie Gibson: ‘We saw a man sleeping in a sleeping bag and I heard a train coming and he wandered over to the tracks and he got on the tracks
‘I walked over to him and said “What are you doing?”

The schoolboy continued: ‘I jumped on tracks and he pushed past me and started walking towards the train and I said you’re not doing that mate.”
‘I picked him up and jumped him over to the side
‘I got Harley to come over and we dragged him over to the shelter and pinned him down for about an hour until help came and spoke to him about what’s been going off.’
Dermot was full of praise for the heroic lads
responding: ‘It’s one thing to help someone but you physically had to restrain this guy.’
Freddie recalled: ‘I was just like “I can’t let him die” – I’m putting myself at risk but it’s not just him and it’s not just me
People can be traumatised and it just ruins people’s lives and everyone deserves a second chance at life.’
I just had to help him,’ Freddie continued
began to cry as he spoke directly to Freddie’s father who joined them on the couch
He said: ‘You’ve got these two feelings to reconcile as a parent – one
those values and morals that you and your wife have instilled in them playing out
Freddie shared: ‘I would do it again in a heartbeat.’

The ‘hero’ teens who jumped on train tracks to stop a man from killing himself have explained what they were thinking in the moment
Mates Freddie Corbett, 15, and Harley Hollingworth, 16
spotted a bloke in a sleeping bag on a train station platform in South Yorkshire
But with just the two lads and two young women around
the man then walked towards the tracks before saying: “I’m going to kill myself tonight.”
The pair previously appeared on This Morning to discuss what happened last month after Freddie noticed the man in a ‘bad state’
His ‘heart dropped’ when he realised what he was going to do and instantly jumped onto the tracks at Bolton-upon-Dearne station to save him
Harley didn’t see where his friend had gone because he was distracted by his phone and Freddie then didn’t want him to risk jumping down too
The 15-year-old described what was going through his mind when he got onto the tracks: “I was just like ‘I can’t let him die
I’m putting myself at risk but it’s not just him and it’s not just me - it’s the train driver and everyone on the train’
People can be traumatised and it just ruins people’s lives
“And obviously everyone deserves a second chance at life.”
Freddie said it was just a ‘natural instinct’ and you ‘don’t think’ in that kind of situation
Harley’s dad also appeared on the sofa as he described it as a ‘shock’ and moment of ‘instant fear’ when he found out what had happened
But the next morning it began to sink it what his son and friend had done and now he just keeps ‘getting prouder and prouder and prouder’
host Josie Gibson asked Freddie if he felt like a hero
but he replied: “I didn’t think it were as big as what other people thought
the teen said his own ‘heart were in bits’ and ‘tears were falling down his face’
A Network Rail worker took to X to share the lads’ incredible bravery as he praised them for saving the man’s life and encouraged people to ‘buy them a J2O’

A CENTURY of a local football competition has been reviewed and celebrated in a new book
The Totty Cup: A Century of Schools Football in the Don and Dearne area has been produced by co-authors Steven Penny and Chris Brook
It’s a follow-up to the successful book about the adult football competition
originally donated by Goldthorpe cinema owner Russell Totty
The competition is for schools in the Don and Dearne regions and it will stir memories of their days playing schoolboy football for many local people
The current trophy is the third version with the previous two still lost
The first trophy’s last sighting was in the late 1970s and its replacement has never been seen since Bolton-upon-Dearne school Carrfield won it in 1998
The book has details in from every one of the finals
the individual winners and has many pictures in from across a century of history
Youngsters who played in the competition before going on to play professionally are also celebrated
who wrote the foreword and the likes of FA Cup winners Gordon West and Alan Sunderland
who also boasted of playing in the competition
Chris said: “There is no older primary school football competition that the Totty Cup - it started back in 1923 in Goldthorpe by cinema owner Russell Totty in the days before primary schools initially competed for by 13 and 14 year olds
“The Dearne Schools FA oversaw the Goldthorpe Picture House Cup in its inaugural season
scoring a brace in a 2-0 win for Wath Victoria
“Thereafter it was known as the Totty Cup
Bolton-upon-Dearne and Brampton dominated the early years
“Future FA Cup winner George Robledo scored all four goals in the 1939 final for Brampton Ellis and then all six goals in 1940
“Dearne Schools FA merged with the Don Schools FA to form the Don and Dearne Schools’ FA which became something of an academy for clubs like Sheffield United and Wolverhampton Wanderers
“Since 1923 there have only been a handful of finals not played
World War Two put the Totty Cup on hold between 1941 and 1944
“The Don and Dearne folded for a season in 1973 and the teachers’ strike chalked another final off in 1986
“Covid-19 put paid to the 2020 final.”
Carrfield are currently top the all-time league table for wins with 19
closely followed by Thurnscoe’s The Hill and Swinton Fitzwilliam who have each won the competition 18 times
The current holders of the competition are Swinton Queen who saw off Goldthorpe’s Sacred Heart in a replay earlier this year
Mr Totty’s descendants made the journey up from Camberley to attend the game
The book can be bought online at https://tottycup.co.uk/pre-order-totty-cup-book-collect-at-pettits/ or from Wath Sports or Hollygrove’s Shop in Goldthorpe
All proceeds from the book will go to the Don and Dearne Schools’ Association
Here are a few winners of the cup from recent years.
