The pièce de résistance of any Guerlain spa is the facial-forward products and techniques (think sculpting and plant-infused options for targeted skincare goals), plus a spa menu tailored to the local clientele and centered on rejuvenation and holistic mind-body wellness: The signature treatment here is the Boston Energy massage full-body hot stone treatment tailored to address stiffness (music to my tense-shouldered ears) over the course of 60 or 90 minutes with the help of products like Guerlain balm and oils; choose your own scent with your therapist based on what you'd like to achieve in your treatment I opted for the signature treatment because of some muscle tightness and tension headaches I was experience from an exercise regimen and welcomed my therapist's help in determining the aromatherapy that would help best for relaxation We also talked about the areas of my body she could work a bit more to achieve the blissed-out state I reached by the end of the treatment Having experienced the spa's signature treatment I'm eager to return for a facial next time Five treatment rooms (including one double-treatment area for couples massages) are open to bookings by non-guests Locker rooms are sleek and stocked with all the eco-conscious beauty products you could need post-treatment from bamboo combs to multi-use-sized dry shampoos and deodorants The velvet-furnitured relaxation lounge for slowing down pre- and post-treatment is worth lingering in; the quiet cocoon-like room feels a world away from the heart of Boston outside and is complete with hot and cold teas and healthy snacks to keep your stomach from rumbling mid-treatment and sphered lighting throughout the high-ceilinged spaces make each one effortlessly striking and bright—and the entire places feels more like a standalone spa than a compartmentalized hotel option The space and building are brand new (opened in 2023) and entirely accessible unlike some other addresses in this neighborhood Elevators are spacious and ADA compliance here includes the pool area which has its own lift that ensures individuals in wheelchairs can enjoy the space There's also a 2,000-square-foot Technogym that you'd perhaps rightfully expect from the iconic Raffles brand, plus sauna, steam room, and experience showers. up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel Condé Nast Traveler is the global citizen’s but primary among them is the opportunity to make a genuine – often area of public realm or city in the world that hasn’t been shaped and influenced by engineers For International Women in Engineering Day meet women across Buro Happold who are making their mark on the built environment through the work that they do Christine Lowry is an advocate for thinking holistically when approaching a new project in recent years Christine’s work has been on the boundary of sustainability building performance and building services Christine joined Buro Happold in 2001 and became a partner in 2021 As someone with demonstrable experience across the built environment and as a senior leader within the practice she can understand that the ability to take a step back and look at the big picture of a project – with many competing requirements – is critical to success This is especially true for projects that are unique The British Library at Boston Spa is a case in point This project is a one-off – and because of who the client is and what it will achieve The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom Its headquarters is a well-known building in its own right and is found right next to King’s Cross St Pancras railway station in London But many people do not know that there is a lot more to the library than its famous red brick frontage in the capital city It is here that Christine and a team from Buro Happold are changing the way in which the precious collection is stored as well as transforming the offices of the staff who work there A brand-new automated store will be created which uses passive climate control in place of traditional energy intensive methods to preserve the materials inside ground engineering and sustainability services to the British Library at Boston Spa project The site in Boston Spa includes a reading room but what is striking is the amount of materials safely kept there automated storage facilities – and a third one is being built attention has been paid to the sustainability side of this new facility “There has been an interesting evolution of the approach to sustainability and energy use the approach was about densifying the collection which was quite energy intensive as it needed to nail specific environmental conditions the approach is that slow temperature fluctuations (within reason) are acceptable That means we don’t need as much energy and there are no heating ventilation or air conditioning systems in there” These passive design choices have a huge impact on the amount of energy required the new automated store will house nine aisles of cranes “A building where someone has to physically go and get a book even one with dense racking to store all these materials is really inefficient in terms of footprint The automation that is being implemented now is bringing that cost right down “The British Library is right at the forefront of thinking – and building – efficiently.” Christine has worked on a wide range of projects and knows the importance of working in collaboration with clients “None of us can achieve excellent work on our own What is really fun and enjoyable on projects like this is the fact that you absolutely have to work in collaboration with the client and the rest of the design team.” When you have a collective of people with a common vision and aim experts and colleagues who are at the top of their game is very rewarding “The British Library are great to work with because they think so innovatively They want to be the best and are at the forefront of thinking of the future of libraries: they are trying to store these items forever It is so interesting to work with a client who thinks long-term.” The idea of collaboration extends to a diversity of people within Buro Happold Christine has been at Buro Happold since 2001 and was made a partner in 2021 her views on the role of women within engineering and the built environment are noteworthy “I’ve never viewed myself as a ‘female engineer’: I’m an engineer I totally acknowledge the importance of having women in senior roles “This is something that Buro Happold takes seriously and is a challenge I think about often How do we keep colleagues moving through their careers and keep them motivated and contributing their great skills I can show that there is a path – and many people willing to help you walk it.” we have built an unrivalled reputation by delivering creative value-led solutions for the benefit of people The page you require is currently not available, please contact one of our
