Oxford City kicked off the Easter weekend with a narrow 1-0 defeat on the road to title-chasing Brackley Town
George Carline’s goal in first-half stoppage time proved to be the difference on the afternoon
after a late City fightback was thwarted by in-form goalkeeper Johnny Maxted.
Ross Jenkins made two changes to the side that lost narrowly to Hereford
Canice Carroll and Corie Andrews both returned to the starting XI
The first-half was a backs against the wall affair with the majority of the game taking place in City’s half.
but by hook or by crook the Hoops cleared their lines as the title challengers threw everything they could at Ross Jenkins’ side.
Brackley’s deadly striking duo of Connor Hall and Matt Lowe both came close to opening the scoring
but both strikers spurned big chances from inside the box.
so it was a hammer blow when the hosts went ahead just seconds before the interval.
A cross into the box fell to the feet of George Carlin’s and he swivelled inside the box to fire past a helpless Kai McKenzie-Lyle in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time.
Half-Time: Brackley Town 1-0 Oxford City
it was much more like it from the Hoops.
Ross Jenkins’ side battled back to gain a foothold in the game and bring the game to the title-chasers.
they still had to be alert at the back to keep the hosts at bay
Josh Ashby made an important clearance on the line to deny Shane Byrne’s stinging shot from crossing the line.
the introduction of Reece Fleet changed the flow of the contest
Fleet himself was the first player to force a save out of Saints’ ‘keeper Johnny Maxted.
The midfielder sent a powerful drive at goal
but the ‘keeper was equal to the effort
but his shot towards goal was again tipped wide by Maxted.
but they were once again denied by the in-form Maxted.
A mazey run from Zac McEachran carved open the Brackley defence
but again a strong save denied the City man.
As the game progressed into the dying moments
the atmosphere around St James’ Park started to turn.
it was a superb save from Maxted that denied the Hoops a point
Neat link up play on the right allowed substitute Alfie Potter to a curl a shot at goal.
The effort looked destined for the corner of the net
but the sprawling shot-stopper miraculously tipped the effort round the post.
City were inches away from an impressive scalp on the road
but they’ll look to secure a win with a quick turnaround in their last home game of the season against Rushall Olympic on Easter Monday.

Farsley Celtic’s time in National League North ended with a 5-0 defeat against a Brackley Town side who finished champions
Four first half Brackley goals from Danny Newton
Connor Hall and Tommy O’Sullivan put the home side in control
Young Tyler Polwarth – skippering Farsley for the first time – received a red card for a professional found after just 20 minutes
with Brackley adding a fifth through Scott Pollock in the 91st minute
It was easy to see why Brackley will be two leagues above a young and inexperienced Farsley side next season – and their promotion is thoroughly deserved after missing out in previous seasons
It’s been a challenging season for nomadic but loyal Farsley fans – which I wrote about here last week
Yesterday’s defeat was the club’s 18th in a row in the league
The men’s first team has been relegated after finishing bottom of National League North and playing ‘home’ games 70 miles away in Buxton following a disastrous attempt to install a new 4G pitch
it’s been a major achievement for the club to fulfil its fixtures this season and it’s fair to recognise the work of the board and a small group of volunteers who have performed heroics to keep the club going
Hats off must also go to manager David Stockdale
his staff and his young players for their commitment
and efforts to lay a new pitch and stabilise the club

Tommy O'Sullivan scored Brackley's fourth goal against Farsley Celtic
Brackley Town manager Gavin Cowan has hailed their promotion to the top tier of English non-league football as "something extraordinary"
they beat Farsley Celtic 5-0 to become National League North champions as rivals Kidderminster Harriers
2023 and 2024 but were unable to finish the job
Connor Hall and Terry O'Sullivan put them 4-0 up by half-time in front of a crowd of 1,691 at St James Park
And Scott Pollock rounded things off with the fifth in the final minute of the game to ensure play-offs would not be needed this time
"We're up there with the best part-time clubs but really
we shouldn't be beating teams like Kidderminster and Scunthorpe to the league," Cowan told BBC Radio Northampton
"There's something extraordinary been done here
'We don't deserve promotion if we lose final game'
Brackley sights fixed on automatic promotion
Gavin Cowan was appointed as Brackley boss following their defeat in the 2023 National League North promotion final
Brackley were founded in 1890 and before winning the title
their greatest achievement came in 2018 when they were victorious in the FA Trophy final
Club chairman Francis Oliver said: "Wembley was unbelievable and this is just the same
"The last 30 minutes was sheer torture
how time goes so slowly - but I just feel so proud for the players
The Saints won their last six games of the season to finish top and Oliver promised they would give it their "best shot" in the National League next season
They will be facing a number of former English Football League clubs
Cowan said: "The players were excellent
they showed a real ruthless mentality and I couldn't be any prouder
a real patience because we knew we were going to have a lot of possession
"We weren't fazed about anything else
What was going on elsewhere didn't interest me in the slightest until your realise the game's won
"The feeling I've got is incredible
I can't imagine what all the good people of this club are feeling after so many years of having a go at it."

Oxford City make their shortest journey of the season as they visit Brackley Town on Good Friday (3pm Kick Off) in the Vanarama National League North.
It's the third last game of the season for The Hoops and they will be hoping to get back to winning ways and finish the season on a high.
This short away trip, followed by the final home game of the season against Rushall Olympic is a great chance for The Hoops to end the season on a high and push themselves toward a mid-tabled finish.
Connor featured for Chorley scoring 38 goals in 92 appearances over three seasons before joining National League Solihull Moors.
Loans spells at Farnborough and then Brackley led to Cowan snapping him up for the 2024-25 season. Connor is the older brother of Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall.
Cowan is also both founder, and head coach of his own Football Academy, coaching Children on Football, life skills and general guidance on a healthy life style.

Brackley Town defender Zak Lilly hopes they can take play-offs out of the equation and win automatic promotion this season
The Saints reached the National League North play-offs in 2018
but below Kidderminster Harriers on goal difference only and with just a single point to make up on leaders Scunthorpe United
"It's what everyone at the club has been dreaming of for the past couple of years," Lilly told BBC Radio Northampton
"I know it's been play-off after play-off and it would be a big relief if we just won it outright
"We just need to make sure that we win our games and then we'll see what happens."
helping Brackley win 26 of their 43 games under boss Gavin Cowan
followed by a trip to Leamington on Monday
and then finish the campaign by taking on bottom club Farsley Celtic in front of their own fans
"We're going to try and win our last three games
We're going to focus on ourselves and if we don't manage to come top
at least we'll have some good form going into the play-offs," said Lilly
"I've been playing in this league nine or 10 years and that's the main thing I want to achieve
there's some really good teams in the league and to come out on top would really say something."
Lilly joined Brackley in the summer of 2023 following a spell with Hereford and was in the squad last season when they beat Scunthorpe in the play-off semi-finals
And that is the case (here) because everyone at Brackley is really good."

The construction of a bridge that will allow high speed trains to pass under the busy A43 near Brackley has taken a major step forward with the structure’s enormous steel beams lifted into position during a series of three weekend closures
Brackley and Northampton – is a vital route
providing access to Silverstone and connections between the M40 and M1
It was reopened just before midnight on Saturday night after the last of three weekend road closures
Preparation for the work began in 2023 when HS2 engineers
realigned the road to create an ‘island’ between the two carriageways big enough for the construction of the new bridge deck
they sank 52m deep piled foundations and then built the pile caps and piers that will support the 66-metre-long bridge deck carrying the road
they lifted the last parts of the seven steel beams that will support the bridge deck using a 750-tonne crane
the team will focus on the concrete deck and parapets
the road will be moved back onto the new bridge and excavation can begin to create space for the railway to pass underneath
This multi-stage approach was designed to keep traffic flowing and disruption to a minimum
HS2 Ltd’s Senior Project Manager Elizabeth Longinotti said:
“The A43 is a busy route between Brackley and Northampton and I’d like to thank drivers for their patience over the last three weekends
allowing us to safely lift the enormous steel beams into position while the road was closed
we can focus on the next part of this complex multi-stage project – pouring the concrete deck ready for the road to be moved onto the new bridge early next year.”
“This is an enormous project which will inevitably impact on people using our roads but we have worked very hard for a long time now to keep that disruption to a minimum
“For a number of years we have been liaising with HS2 and their partners to develop a plan which would reduce the disturbance to road users during the construction of this huge structure
“We have also taken advantage of the road closures to expedite our own works improving drainage and repairing the slope along the A43
reducing the need for further disruption.”
The 80km stretch of railway that passes Brackley – including the A43 bridge – is being delivered by HS2’s main works contractor EKFB
Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall working with ASC (a joint venture between Arcadis
They worked with National Highways and EKFS’s sub-contractor
EKFB Deputy Project Director Timothée Scherer
“The successful execution of the beam lift represents a crucial milestone in our project
This accomplishment underscores the diligent efforts and unwavering commitment of our team
who have meticulously worked to ensure the safe and efficient installation of the beams
This progress brings us significantly closer to the realisation of this essential infrastructure project
which is destined to substantially enhance regional connectivity and transportation”
Senior Project Manager at Kier Transportation
“It’s fantastic to see the beam lift take effect
and we’re now starting to see the bridge really take shape
Putting this solution into place has required a huge amount of expertise and collaboration with our partners
and we’re proud of the impact it will have
We look forward to moving onto the next stages of the project
while continuing to work hard to minimise disruption for road users and the local community.”
The last few weeks have also seen significant progress for the nearby Turweston viaduct near Brackley
with the 80m long deck beam now slid fully into position
The 591-tonne steel structure was assembled to one side and slid out on special pads covered in PTFE - a Teflon-like material usually found on the surface of a non-stick frying pan - used to minimise friction between the deck and the temporary steel bearings on top of each of the piers
Turweston is one of five viaducts on the project which use an innovative ‘double composite’ structure
with layers of reinforced concrete on the top and bottom to create a much more structurally efficient box-like span which dramatically cuts the amount of embedded carbon in the design
In total there are more than 500 bridging structures on the HS2 project - which is designed to improve connections between London
Birmingham and the North while freeing up space for more local trains on the most congested southern end of the existing West Coast Main Line into London Euston
These range from small footbridges and underpasses
to innovative ‘green bridges’ designed to help wildlife cross the railway
massive motorway bridges and the record-breaking Colne Valley viaduct
The last few months has also seen significant progress at HS2’s other major viaducts
with the first completed viaduct deck at the complex Delta Junction outside Birmingham and the Small Dean and Wendover Dean deck slides in Buckinghamshire
Oxford City couldn't quite carry their 2024 form into 2025 as a first half goal from Connor Hall and a last minute Shane Byrne penalty gave Brackley a 2-0 win at the MGroup Stadium this afternoon
Having come under early pressure City rallied after the break but for once couldn't find a goal as a well-drilled Brackley side won a very competitive local derby
they started to spray the ball around after that
Zac McEachran stabbing a chance wide and Croker heading another off target
although it took a flying block by McKenzie Lyle to stop the dangerous Roberts getting in on goal just before Hall flicked home a header from a Bates cross to give the Saint the lead right on the half time whistle
Boss Ross Jenkins demanded more energy and his side responded after the break with Tom Scott going close and visiting keeper Johnny Maxted making an excellent save from a Josh Parker header as the Hoops created chances for the first time
The danger of conceding a second goal remained
McKenzie Lyle making two or three further saves as the game became more end to end
but City pressed and pressed and in the end were unfortunate to concede a second in the last minute when Mckenzie Lyle hauled ROberts over and Byrne clipped the penalty down the middle to make it 2-0
battling performance and plenty of positives despite th3e scoreline
Let's dee how we go in the FA Trophy nnext up on Saturday..
There was nothing to separate Farsley Celtic and Brackley Town at Tarmac Silverlands Stadium
Robbie Fox had got the Celts off to an excellent start with his header on 16 minutes giving Pav Singh’s side the advantage
With a barrage of attacks in the second half
Farsley defended stoutly but substitute Jez Abbey found a late equaliser as the game headed into stoppage time
Farsley were dealt an early setback in the tie with captain Conor Branson forced off inside the first ten minutes
with the skipper set to be added to the club’s lengthening injury list with a suspected rib injury
But the Celt Army responded in style when they netted the game’s opening goal as towering forward Fox used his height to his advantage by heading in the opening goal
There was little by way of goal action for much of the first half though Celtic had a half-chance to extend their lead on 33 minutes when Sam Fielding sent in an incisive cross-field ball into the Brackley box but Bailey Sloane couldn’t direct a tricky dropping ball goalwards with his first-time effort
Farsley’s on loan goalkeeper Kieran Flavell pulled off two excellent saves before the break
firstly denying Matt Lowe and then a few minutes later Gaz Dean
with Connor Hall putting his shot wide of the target from the following corner
Brackley made a quick start to the second half and only a goal-line header from Sloane prevented them from levelling as he headed a wind-assisted cross off the goal line
Flavell continued to earn his corn in the Farsley goal
firstly denying Lowe for a second time before he then kept out Shane Byrne’s long-distance free kick
The shot-stopper showed more great reflexes to react quickly to block the ball as it flew through a sea of players
before Dean saw his follow-up shot blocked by a Farsley defender
The Celt Army could then have sealed victory as the game ticked into stoppage time as on-loan Wigan Athletic midfielder Finn O’Boyle showed great skill to round a defender and then the goalkeeper but Morgan Roberts crucially made a vital goal line block to keep Brackley in the fight
And the Northamptonshire side dealt Farsley a cruel blow three minutes into stoppage time as Abbey’s shot bounced in off the crossbar to give The Saints a point

HARRIERS head to Brackley Town on Tuesday night looking to continue their good form against one of the division’s best sides
Brackley have been perennial promotion challengers in this division and have been there or there abouts each season for many a year
this time around proving no exception whatsoever
have topped the division earlier this season but now sit in second place ahead of Tuesday’s encounter
While Phil Brown’s men were victors over Needham Market on Saturday
Brackley were edging out Radcliffe on their travels

Between early February and a surprise defeat to Buxton earlier this month
powering past the likes of Rushall and Darlington in the process
won’t be a time for either side to worry about weary legs or a hectic schedule
“We’re fighting for the same cause and that comes down to people’s mentality
individually and collectively,” he commented
“We can’t afford to rest players and we’ll be at our strongest
we’ll give them a game as we’ll bring our A-Game to the party
I always like the big games; I always like the games that have a bit of pressure on them.

Quakers started with plenty of promise and put together a good spell of pressure without managing to create an opening although Ben Hedley found space on the right to find Cedric Main with a low cross
but the striker couldn’t control the ball
Cedric Main controlled a through ball from Elliot Forbes
Kelly swung a free kick from the left over towards the far post
And then another ball into the box caused panic in the Brackley defence
but first Hetherington and then Main couldn't get shots away
Some good play down the left by Kelly gave him the chance to make ground
and his low cross was cleared for a corner
but Quakers were penalised when the corner was taken
There was a chance on 21 minutes when Hetherington’s cross from the right was cleared as far as Scott Barrow
who tried a low left foot shot that Jonny Maxted held on to low to his left
Brackley won a corner on the right on 24 minutes that was curled into the near post
Quakers wasted a half chance when Hatfield won the ball in midfield and played the ball through to Maskell
who put a right foot shot wide with two team mates unmarked square of him
Kelly cleverly played the ball inside for Jack Maskell to sidestep a defender
and then coolly roll the ball into the bottom corner of the net
But Brackley pulled a goal back within two minutes
A long throw in came from Justin Donawa on the right for Matt Lowe to score with a diving header
Quakers had a chance for 3-1 when Maskell and Main combined to set up Kelly who dragged his shot wide of the post
Brackley had another long throw from the right
who was wearing a new shirt for the second half after his original was torn
conceded a corner which was swung into the six yard box
Brackley levelled from another long throw which went over the top of the Darlington defence for Lowe to hook home at the far post
Then they went 3-2 up on 53 minutes when Brackley broke again
and Donowa beat Jameson with a low diagonal shot
Quakers made their first sub on 55 minutes
But it was 4-2 on the hour when a corner came in from the right and Gareth Dean poked the ball home from six yards
Quakers tried to respond when Maskell found Hatfield in the box
Then a careful build up on the right ended with a powerful shot by Flint that Maxted pushed over the bar
Hatfield and Hatherington coming on for Matty Cornish and Haseem Bakre
but Brackley kept a firm grip on the game until the end
Brackley include former Darlington player Justin Donawa in their starting line up

HARRIERS put in one of their most determined and professional displays of the season to win 1-0 at Brackley Town on Tuesday night
Ashley Hemmings struck for the 29th time this season with the game’s only goal
but Harriers had chances to win by more at St James’ Park
The pivotal moment of the game arrived on just four minutes; Dave Worrall aiming a perfect cross squarely on to the head of Hemmings who deftly glanced it into the net via the far post
Danny Newton might’ve had Brackley level just four minutes later when he saw his volley deflected aside
before Kyle Morrison’s header from a deep delivery into the box needed a good pair of hands from goalkeeper Jonny Maxted
Brackley’s best chance of the game came nine minutes into the second half
A deep cross was headed across goal and toward Matt Lowe who
was denied by a goal-line clearance from Morrison
It wasn’t all defending from Harriers – on 67 minutes they went close to a second when Hemmings sent a firm effort towards Maxted that the keeper tipped aside with little to spare
Maxted’s finest work of the night came with 76 played
Hemmings’ driven free kick was given a pivotal touch on to the underside of the bar by the stopper
In the sixth of seven minutes of added time
Connor Hall aimed a shot around the body of his man that Christian Dibble watched carefully before turning away from goal
an act that confirmed the destination of the three points

slipping to their third successive defeat in the process
With keeper George Willis out injured long-term manager Billy Heath secured the signature of former Rochdale stopper David Robson in time to play
but it was his opposite number Jonny Maxted who drew the headlines
In the tenth minute the Brackley keeper failed to prevent a back header from going behind and then managed to fumble Billy Whitehouse's subsequent flag-kick over the line to give the Reds the lead
Then after the visitors had uncompromisingly taken the game by the scruff of the neck with three goals blew a fuse on the stroke of half-time
bringing down Liam Waldock in full flight on the edge of the area
The referee had little choice but to brandish red
George Carline took over between the sticks
Having given the Saints a 2-1 lead on 25 minutes with a simple conversion of a right-flank cross
Carline's first job was to pick the ball out of the back of the net after Jed Abbey had duly despatched the free-kick
Alfreton had led for just seven minutes when Alfie Bates slammed home a loose ball and Connor Hall had made the score 3-1 to Brackley after 32 minutes with a header from a Matt Lowe cross
Spurred on by the turn of events the Reds were quickly out of the blocks after the interval and by the 48th minute a long throw by Adam Lund had caused enough confusion for Max Hunt to grab an equalising header and from that point there was hope in the air
Try as they might though the hosts met Northamptonshire resistance
Jake Day and sub Lewis Salmon before Brackley delivered the sucker punch in the shadows of added time with Lowe sparking wild celebrations on the visiting bench when he slid home a right-wing cross rather too easily
