There have only been a few notable misses in the Beane era
The NFL Draft is far from an exact sciences, with every club across the league having their fair share of hits and misses. Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills are no exception to this rule
with some notable whiffs since Beane took over the draft in 2018
Now before anyone accuses me of focusing on the negatives
next week’s article will focus on the biggest draft hits from Beane
That list is much longer than what you’ll see below
so trust me when I say that the positive news is on its way
For the time being we have to “eat our vegetables,” and digest some of the negatives from recent drafts
The Bills made a modest trade up in the 2019 NFL Draft to acquire Cody Ford
packaging picks 40 and 158 to move up to the 38th spot
Ford was expected to be the right tackle of the future with Buffalo
and he platooned a bit with veteran Ty Nsekhe during his rookie year
with Ford making the move to guard in his two remaining seasons with the Bills
It should be noted that Ford started 29 games across three seasons, before ending up benched in 2021 when Spencer Brown was inserted into the starting lineup (shifting Daryl Williams to guard). Beane did trade Ford during the 2022 offseason, recouping a fifth-round pick from the Arizona Cardinals
Carlos “Boogie” Basham got off to an inauspicious start with the Bills
being listed as “inactive” during nine of 17 regular-season games during his rookie season
While Basham got much more playing time during his sophomore season — playing about 39% of snaps — he failed to make an impact for the Bills
Knowing that Basham would likely be cut prior to the start of the 2023 season, Beane traded him to the New York Giants in a swap of 2025 NFL draft picks
The Bills received pick 177 that was used to select cornerback Dorian Strong
while the Giants took cornerback Korie Black with pick 246
Kaiir Elam’s time in Buffalo came to an end this offseason, as the Bills traded him to the Dallas Cowboys along with pick 204 (offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius) in exchange for pick 170 (defensive back Jordan Hancock) in the 2025 draft and a 2026 seventh-round pick
Elam is the only first-round miss in Beane’s tenure with Buffalo
the Bills moved up to select Elam — packaging picks 25 and 130 to move up to pick 23
It was truly a sophomore slump for Elam during the 2023 season, at which point he found himself listed as “inactive” or a DNP in 14 of 17 regular-season games. One of those three games he did play included a unforgettably poor performance in London, UK versus the Jacksonville Jaguars
appearing in 13 of 17 regular season games
but he too often unreliable at cornerback for the Bills’ defense
it’s a relatively short list of draft misses for Brandon Beane
there are other picks that I could second guess (Justin Shorter
but I don’t believe it would be fair to consider selections on Day 3 as a miss
Let me know if there are any other draft misses that I may have neglected to include
and be on the lookout for a rundown of Beane’s greatest draft hits

Nimmo slams way into Mets record books with 9 RBIs ..
WASHINGTON -- Brandon Nimmo hadn’t been having the best start to the year entering play on Monday
He’d been making decent contact and hitting balls hard
Manager Carlos Mendoza discussed as much pregame
It’s safe to say Nimmo won that fight, as he broke out big time in the Mets’ 19-5 series-finale win over the Nats to split the four-game set at Nationals Park
going 4-for-6 with two home runs and nine RBIs to tie Carlos Delgado (June 27
against the Yankees) for the franchise record for most RBIs in a single game
“We started seeing the Nimmo that we all know,” Mendoza said postgame
and it was good to see him go out there and have that type of performance.”
It was not only a franchise-best type of performance
but also something done so rarely in Major League Baseball
Nimmo became the first player in MLB since the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani on Sept
He also became the third player since RBIs became official (1920) to tally nine-plus RBIs in a three-inning span (the sixth through eighth)
joining Sammy Sosa of the Cubs in Colorado on Aug
2002 (innings three-five) and Ivan Rodriguez of the Rangers in Seattle on April 13
Nimmo is also just the second player with nine-plus RBIs in a game in the sixth inning or later since RBIs became official (1920)
joining Mike Moustakas (also nine RBIs) on Sept
it was Nimmo’s first career game with multiple multirun homers
after he launched a three-run home run in the sixth and a grand slam in the seventh for the seventh multihomer game of his career
“There's definitely a part of you that is keeping track
especially when [first-base coach Antoan Richardson] came up after the double -- the last time I got on base -- and he was like
that definitely is.’ … I think before this
Nimmo had no clue about the full magnitude of his achievement until postgame
“It was told to me right after the game,” Nimmo said
it'd be really cool to get double-digit RBIs in a day,’ when I was coming up before Swaggy [Mark Vientos] hit the three-run homer
this would be sweet if I could get a couple more out of it.’”

"Just had 9 RBI, that's pretty cool" 🤣You're a gem, @You_Found_Nimmo! pic.twitter.com/iB0MAer9qI
It was indeed Vientos who crushed Nimmo’s dreams of a 10-plus-RBI game, launching a three-run homer of his own in the ninth inning before Nimmo stepped to the plate. And, as Vientos trotted around the bases and Nimmo readied himself to step to the plate, he was grinning -- knowing he would have to settle for just nine, maybe 10 if he could hit another homer (he didn’t).
The offensive outpouring from Nimmo put an exclamation mark on the victory, which ensured New York headed back home without losing back-to-back games for a second time this season (also: April 15-16 vs. the Twins).
Nimmo had some help, of course, including Jeff McNeil’s first home run of the season in the fifth inning and that three-run blast from Vientos in the ninth -- his first career three-run knock.
Nimmo didn’t have the only history-making moment, though, as Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch twice in the same inning, just the seventh player to do so since 1974.
But all the attention, and all the exuberance, was saved for Nimmo, as he achieved a feat few in baseball have done. Even more so, it was a weight lifted off the outfielder’s shoulders, able to face the final days of April and enter May breathing a sigh of relief.
“It's been a little bit frustrating,” Nimmo said. “And you never know, days like today might happen -- obviously, tying a franchise record in RBIs, that obviously doesn't happen every day. But even just getting balls in the air, hitting balls hard -- it doesn't always work out like that. So really just enjoyed today.
“... These days don't come around that often, and you just, you kind of sit back and enjoy it.”
Brandon Williams played his last competitive game for Manchester United against Burnley in the Carabao Cup in December 2022
Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams says it "hurts watching football" after being without a club since last summer
Williams was released by boyhood team Manchester United at the end of the 2023-24 season after his contract expired and has spent this campaign watching the game from the outside
The 24-year-old's last appearance came in December 2023 during a loan spell with Ipswich
In March, Williams admitted to a charge of dangerous driving - he had been caught in August 2023 doing almost 100mph before crashing his car in Cheshire
"I go into this mode where I just don't care," Williams said on Ben Foster's Fozcast podcast, external
"I have this switch where I don't care what happens
They [family and friends] wanted me to get back to football but they could see I'd fallen out of love with
"It hurts me watching football now because I just want to be there
having meals together and just doing things."
Williams came through Manchester United's academy to make his senior debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019
but struggled to tie down a regular spot and spent time on loan at Norwich and Ipswich
He featured under Kieran McKenna at Ipswich but the former Manchester United coach sent Williams back to his parent club after seeing that "something wasn't right"
"I had a few problems going on off the pitch at the end of the year," Williams said
"He [McKenna] said 'get yourself sorted and come back as Brandon'
things increased off the pitch with family problems and friend problems."
Williams will be sentenced for his dangerous driving charge on 9 May at Chester Crown Court
He was caught driving in an erratic manner and at up to 99mph in a 70mph zone
the court heard he was seen with a balloon at his mouth
The CPS said a female passenger was seen filming them at one point on her phone
adding that it was clear to witnesses that Williams' Audi was out of control before colliding with another car
Williams was breathalysed but the test was negative
Williams is seeking a route back into the game but admitted that he found it difficult to deal with being in the spotlight since breaking into the first team at Old Trafford
but feared opening up completely on his struggles in case word spread around the club and he received an unsympathetic response
Williams said he was going through some "dark" times and Farrell would come to visit in the morning to try to get him to leave his apartment
The England under-21 international believes his time away from the game has afforded him the opportunity to "reset" and feels he is ready to get back playing again next season
"I want to have that feeling again of winning and being around the changing room environment," Williams said
"I've had loads of teams trying to get me out - America
Europe and England - but I haven't been ready
I want to go somewhere 100% focused and kick on
"I would like to experience that different culture
I'm only 24 so I could do three or four years abroad
Definitely Europe at a good club or an upcoming club."

Marsh (hamstring) to IL; Rojas expected to fill CF voidOutfielder Stevenson recalled from Triple-AApril 20th
PHILADELPHIA -- With Brandon Marsh's right leg injury continuing to linger
the Phillies placed the outfielder on the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's series finale against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park
Fellow center fielder Cal Stevenson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Marsh's place on the active roster
Marsh's IL move -- which has been diagnosed as a right hamstring strain -- is retroactive to Thursday
Though the Phillies were initially confident Marsh would avoid an IL stint
he had not played since tweaking his right leg on Wednesday while trying to field a bad bounce in the outfield against the Giants
and he can't run at 100%,” manager Rob Thomson said before Sunday’s game
“This is the day we can backdate him the furthest
While the Phils are hoping Marsh won't be sidelined much longer than the minimum 10 days
his timeline remains unclear until they see how he progresses with running over the next few days
It had been a rollercoaster week for Marsh, who was out of the lineup for last Monday's series opener against the Giants due to his ongoing struggles at the plate
Thomson had suggested that Marsh might get a few days off to clear his head, but the outfielder returned to the lineup the following day -- and drove in a key run with a sacrifice fly in the Phillies' 6-4 victory.
With San Francisco starting a left-hander the next day, Marsh was again not in the starting lineup but replaced Johan Rojas as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and remained in center field. In the top of the seventh, Giants designated hitter Wilmer Flores hit a single to center that took a strange bounce, forcing Marsh to suddenly cut back to prevent the ball from getting past him.
Marsh finished the game, but he sat out Thursday's series finale and each of the first two games against the Marlins with what was initially labeled a knee issue before landing on the IL with the hamstring strain.
“It's the back of the knee, and it runs up into the hamstring,” Thomson said. “As mild as it can be.”
Though the exact timeline for his return is unclear, Marsh will travel with the Phillies on their six-game road trip to New York and Chicago that begins Monday. He’ll continue taking swings and doing his usual drills until he’s able to run at 100%, at which point he’ll be sent out for a rehab assignment.
The hope is that getting some Minor League at-bats will help Marsh return from his injury in a better place with his swing. He’s just 4-for-42 (.095) with 16 strikeouts this season. Marsh has not recorded a hit since March 30, going 0-for-31 with 11 strikeouts in his past 15 games.
In the meantime, the plan will likely be to give Rojas an extended look in Marsh’s absence.
Rojas’ offensive struggles last season contributed to Marsh earning the everyday center-field job this season -- and left Rojas battling just to make the Opening Day roster as the club’s fourth outfielder. But the 24-year-old Rojas has played well in his limited opportunities this season.
He entered Sunday hitting .345 (10-for-29) with a .406 on-base percentage and three stolen bases. Rojas also had a three-hit game on Saturday, including a well-executed bunt -- something the Phillies have been pushing him to do more often dating back to last season.
“He's playing pretty good,” Thomson said. “As long as he's doing that, I think I'd just keep running him out there.”

“Purpose” was praised in its citation as “a skillful blend of drama and comedy that probes how different generations define heritage.” Jacobs-Jenkins had been twice nominated for a drama Pulitzer
for “Everybody” in 2018 and “Gloria” in 2016
He won the Tony Award for best play revival last year for “Appropriate,” a work centered on a family reunion in Arkansas where everyone has competing motivations and grievances
He is on the host committee of this year’s Met Gala
Pulitzer officials announced that Jason Roberts won the biography award for “Every Living Thing: The Great and Deadly Race to Know All Life” and Benjamin Nathans' "To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement" had been cited for general nonfiction
Two books were announced as history winners

We’ve completed another housing project delivering new homes in the heart of the Motherwell Community.
A total of 48 new flats at Brandon Street, Motherwell, are now home to tenants and form part of our ambitious new housing supply programme to deliver 6,000 new homes by 2035.
The new homes transform the previously derelict site and comprise 42 new flats while a further 6 are within the refurbished YMCA building
They were delivered by CCG (Scotland) Ltd and benefit from renewable technologies
including a ground source heat pump system which helps reduce heating emissions while making our homes more energy efficient and comfortable for our tenants.
She said: “I am thoroughly enjoying my new home and love how friendly the neighbours are
I moved from an upstairs cottage flat in Motherwell to a ground level wheelchair accessible flat which is perfect and helps with my mobility.”
Marking the completion was Housing Convener
He was joined by local councillors Kenneth Duffy and David Robb
representatives from CCG (Scotland) Ltd and council officers.
added: “Our high-quality affordable homes are transforming local communities and town centres
Our Brandon Street development is in an ideal location for transport links and amenities and has dramatically changed the local streetscape
One of the key features of this development is the use of renewable technology which doesn’t present additional carbon to the environment and maximises energy efficiency
Examples of this include a ground source heat pump system which controls heating and stores hot water
making our tenants’ homes more comfortable.
“We’re making significant progress in delivering on our new build programme
boosting the local economy and delivering homes for our tenants now and for generations to come
It’s all part of our ambition to make North Lanarkshire the place to live.”
The project cost £11M with grant funding of £4.158M from the Scottish Government
which includes additional funding from Scotland’s Heat Network Fund in part support of the heating delivered.
said: “CCG began working with North Lanarkshire Council in 2019
our partnership has contributed to the transformation of communities across the region with the delivery of hundreds of new homes
as well as helping the Council transition into a new
‘net zero ready’ housing era - first at Dykehead Road in Airdrie and now here at Brandon Street in Motherwell.
it shares common traits of those before it
with its delivery only made possible through a shared commitment to collaboration
and a willingness to adopt advanced building methods and emerging renewable technologies.
this has ensured local housing needs continue to be met
and we look forward to building on this momentum with North Lanarkshire Council in the months ahead through various new developments.”

Grant Jackson is the new Conservative MP for Brandon-Souris
Newcomer Grant Jackson has won for the Conservatives in the riding of Brandon-Souris
The former MLA for Spruce Woods decided to run for the federal job after previous Conservative MP Larry Maguire announced he would not seek re-election due to a medical condition
Jackson claimed the seat followed by Liberal Ghazanfar Ali with 23.2 per cent
and NDP Quentin Robinson with 14.4 per cent
Just over 66 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in Brandon-Souris
a Conservative stronghold since the riding was formed
except for four years when the Liberal party formed a majority government in 1993
being the youngest-serving MP for the riding since its inception in 1953
he is eager to represent the people of Westman
“The five weeks certainly flew by,” Jackson said the day following the election
when he was busy collecting his campaign signs
and I did my best to get to every community
as well as knock on as many doors in the City of Brandon as I could
I put on quite a few miles and a lot of pounding of pavement
but I think we had a very good campaign here focused on local issues as well as the topics on the national level
I give a lot of credit to my team and an excellent group of volunteers who came out from all corners of Brandon-Souris to support me
“I am certainly humbled by the amount of support that I received last night when the ballots were cast,” he said
and I know that the people of Westman have sent me to Ottawa on their behalf with a big ‘to-do’ list
There’s a lot of issues in this country that Parliament needs to be solving
I know there’s a lot of work ahead of me—I’m out picking up election signs right now—and then the work begins as soon as the campaign wraps up.”
“I think that turnout is higher than it’s been in some of the more recent past elections
so it shows that voters are paying attention,” he said
and I think the support that both Dan (Mazier
Riding Mountain MP) and I received just shows that people were ready for change in Ottawa
and they strongly supported our Conservative Party’s common sense platform and our plan to address some of the challenges that Canada is facing
So that gives me an incredible grounding to get to work with.”
Now that the ticker-tape has been picked up
Jackson looks forward to rolling up his sleeves in Ottawa
Carney recalls Parliament right away,” he said
“Parliament hasn’t sat in a number of months
and there’s a lot of issues to be discussing and debating on the floor of the House of Commons
So Parliament needs to get back into session
and we know the NDP are not really a factor
so the Bloc Québécois will play a role that will be an interesting dynamic with the separatists in that position
It’s important that we get to work and try to find common ground to deliver on the items that Canadians are asking us to deliver on
Mark Carney made a lot of promises over the course of this election campaign
and we’re going to hold him to account to ensure that he’s delivering for Canadians.”
Affordability was a major concern Jackson heard from people in his riding while door-knocking
a common theme for many months prior to the election call
“That was top of mind at almost every door
whether it was young people starting a family
or seniors on a fixed income,” Jackson said
We’ve got to make some improvements on affordability
and the cost of homes needs to come down.”
Promises to the agriculture and natural resource sectors are also areas where Jackson feels the feds need their feet held to the fire
“Our oil and gas and ag sectors are top of mind
“They’ve been hurting under the last 10 years of Liberal policies
We’re going to hold him to that commitment
because we know those sectors need our support.”
people are wondering if there actually will be a pipeline built as Carney suggested
Carney said he’s in favour of getting our resources to market
so the only way to do that is with a pipeline,” Jackson said
“He needs to get building and fulfill those commitments that he made to Canadians.”
Jackson paid tribute to his predecessor Larry Maguire
who held the MP seat om Brandon-Souris since 2013
“He was a great Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris
and I certainly do have big shoes to fill,” Jackson said of Maguire

Home » Brandon Bailey’s Racecard Preview: Hollywoodbets Kenilworth – 6 May
2 THREE TIGERS ran a lovely race on debut behind Gimmeathrill
he was slightly slow out the machine and still managed to storm home for fourth
there is no doubt that he will improve tremendously from that performance
he has run some very nice races in competitive fields
he should find this race much easier on Tuesday afternoon
he must have a good winning chance on form
5 GOLD GIBOSKI put in a great performance on debut behind All The Rage
and then stayed on strongly late to finish just over two lengths behind the winner
8 THE ROARING ROCK will need to improve quite a bit to win
he might have a place chance at best in this field
(Brandon Bailey: 2 – 3 – 5 – 8)
8 SIGNOR DANTE found no support in the market on debut
he was very green early and then stayed on strongly to finish just under four lengths behind Green Planet
he should love the step up in trip to 1400m
if he has made the necessary improvement back at home
5 DRICUS was a touch disappointing last time behind Show Off
he never really got into the race when they turned for home at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on the 21st of April
9 OCEAN SKY has run two lovely races in succession
if he can get some luck in running from a wide draw here
10 FATHER CHRISTMAS ran a much better race on the 14th of April behind Gold Dust
he could sneak into the places from a wide draw
(Brandon Bailey: 8 – 5 – 9 – 10)
1 WILD APPLAUSE got going very late last time behind Angel’s Oasis
she was just off the speed early and then rattled home late to finish just over 0,5 lengths behind the winner
Jockey Muzi Yeni sticks with her from a good draw

and Jockey Andrew Fortune has been booked to ride

10 SUPREME FATE has been rested for 111 days
(Brandon Bailey: 1 – 3 – 2 – 10)

he was a long way back and fought hard all the way to the line
he has a good each way chance in this field

he was very disappointing in his last start
he is currently racing off a dangerous rating
he can easily win a race like this on his best form
8 TWO A PENNY has been rested for 146 days
6 LANDOFTHERISINGSUN won his maiden impressively on the 11th of February
the big weight on his back won’t make life easy for him

1 PINOT GRIGIO finished powerfully for third in his last start behind La Pulga on the 14th of April
he should get the run of the race on Tuesday afternoon
9 MAJOR MASTER needed his last run badly over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth
he is a lovely looking gelding with lots of ability
he should be storming home late from a wide draw
3 DIAMOND ROCK ran a fair race behind La Pulga on the 14th of April
he should love the drop in trip now to 1600m
he is consistent and should be amongst the places again
(Brandon Bailey: 1 – 9 – 3 – 2)
4 COSMIC RHYTHM absolutely took off late to run a great race behind Wehaveasituation on the 16th of April
he was drawn poorly last time and really made up good ground in the home straight to finish just over two lengths behind the winner
he will have a massive winning chance in this field
8 WEHAVEASITUATION won well on the 16th of April
she was given a top ride by Jockey Andrew Fortune
she likes to race just off the speed early
and then she comes with a strong finish late
1 BEER WITH THE BOYS never runs a bad race
there is no reason why he shouldn’t be right there again
he is currently racing off a competitive rating of 61
(Brandon Bailey: 4 – 8 – 1 – 2)
10 BEACH QUEEN really finished her race off nicely on the 16th of April behind Lady Look Alike

she was only beaten just over four lengths by the winner
(Brandon Bailey: 10 – 1 – 7 – 3)
5 LET IT BE SAID ran a super race in the Grade 3 Variety Club Mile on the 14th of April
and then finished off nicely to run second behind the very talented Garrix
he should love the drop in trip here to 1400m

he should show major improvement now that he steps up in trip
3 SILVER FALCON came from a long way back in the Grade 3 Champagne Stakes on the 21st of April
he stayed on well to finish fourth behind some very talented sprinters
he could have a place chance from a good draw
(Brandon Bailey: 5 – 1 – 4 – 3)
he was very unlucky last time behind Paratrooper
and unfortunately the gaps just didn’t appear when it was needed
he flashed home late to run a brilliant third
if he gets a smooth run in transit on Tuesday afternoon
2 TRIPPI’S SILK won impressively on the 16th of April
he will always have a good winning chance at this level
12 CROWNED HORNBILL looks to be improving at a rate of knots
he showed speed early and then fought them off nicely
he must have a good winning chance again here
15 KING’S QUEST is highly rated by the stable
(Brandon Bailey: 13 – 2 – 12 – 15)

Danielle Brandon can throw 100kg over her head, walk on her hands faster than many people can run and sprint 400m in little over a minute – skills that have seen her named among the “fittest on earth” in her chosen sport of CrossFit
But her journey to the top has been far from conventional
The 29-year-old has only recently opened up about the challenges she faced during her childhood
including her mum’s battle with addiction and related stints in prison
“I wanted to be defined as this really great athlete and person
“I had to be very independent due to my parents both being addicts
she wasn’t really raising my brother and I; that’s not really what her focus was.”
When she was in primary school her mother was sent to prison for drug possession
so she and her brother were placed in the care of their aunt and uncle
even the government when they put us there
thought it would be this really supportive
but it ended up being quite the opposite,” Brandon says
“Deciding how to navigate it was left up to our own interpretation
Sport provided structure and consistency in Brandon’s life
it soon became obvious she was very good at it
whether she was turning her hand to gymnastics
I was always active and competing,” she says
and I found I could lean on those people much more than I could lean on the people at home
“It was something I looked forward to every day
not only because it was something I picked up so naturally
but also because the people in sport wanted me there
my teammates; these are people and friends I loved to see every day
and I think they like having me around as well.”

Brandon was introduced to CrossFit in secondary school
unaware that it could or would later become her career
Her PE teacher was a CrossFit coach and had woven the training methodology into his lessons
One of her gymnastics coaches was also a fan
and together the pair “tricked” her into coming along to her first class
you would be so good at this,’ and kind of played with my head
‘I need to go and check this out’,” Brandon laughs
in college Brandon had to prioritise her other athletic endeavours; namely
in which she later became a pole vault specialist
“My schedule at that time was very chilled
probably too chilled for what I was used to
then started doing CrossFit on the side of track and field and all of my classes – that was quite the chaotic schedule.”
Clashing commitments meant she was unable to compete in CrossFit’s upper echelons; it wasn’t that she wasn’t good enough
the stars aligned and she was free to compete at her inaugural CrossFit Games – the sport’s annual competition to find “the fittest man and woman on earth”
Brandon finished 10th in a field of 117 women
and she has competed every year since with a highest finish of fourth in 2022

Many CrossFit fans’ abiding memory of Brandon came after she won an event at the 2021 CrossFit Games – an obstacle course race which had to be completed while walking on your hands
After coming into contact with a positive case of Covid-19 ahead of the competition
she had been forced to segregate from other athletes and complete several events in isolation
she flipped the bird on both hands and held them aloft
and her fiery nature on the competition floor
has led many people to develop misconceptions about her
“I get the impression people think I’m going to bite their head off,” she says
“I meet people all the time and they’re like
Danielle is actually really pleasant and smiley’
I think that is what is written off most about me; people think I’m going to meet them with anger
“Maybe they’re reading into something a little true
I think my friends say it best: ‘We love you
but we also would never want to upset you.’ That’s so fair
I wouldn’t want to argue with myself either
but I’m actually more chilled than people think.”
I’m inclined to agree with her on the basis of our 30-minute chat
her weekly training regime sounds anything but “chilled”

you’d assume the gym is Brandon’s second home
She’s there five times per week for three to five hours per day
As the CrossFit Games in August grow nearer
this is usually bumped up to a couple of two to four hour sessions
and on the cusp of the competition she often trains three times per day
Friday and Saturday contain one big gym session,” she says
“Thursday is going to be a swim or a longer run day
and Sunday will typically be a full rest day
“You might see other athletes breaking their gym sessions into two
but this is how I personally like to do it.”
This personalised approach is a common theme
Brandon’s been training in some capacity for most of her life
This information is balanced with input from her coach to create an effective plan
“This is my second season with my coach,” she says
but I also know a lot about what works for me and I’m really big on that
I think I know myself really well as an athlete and I know what I like to see in training.”
There are certain exercises she does every week
“I want to make sure I’m hitting handstand push-ups
a rowing piece and a biking piece,” to name a few
These are structured into a series of progressive drills and workouts to help Brandon make headway
“Typically, every gym day there’s going to be an aerobic or zone piece,” she explains. “That might be a longer run or more [exercise] machine-specific, so I could be sitting on a rower or exercise bike for anywhere from half-an-hour to an hour
“Then I’m going to have strength work every day
I can walk in a gym on a Monday and know I’m probably going to have back squats and cleans
Or every Tuesday I know I’m going to have snatches
“There may also be a gymnastics piece or weakness work
This could be more skills-based or it could just be muscular endurance building
And then I’ll do my big piece for the day.”
This “big piece” is a particularly challenging workout designed to boost various facets of fitness while preparing Brandon for the rigours of competition
she shares an example – and it’s not for the faint of heart
Read more: An expert trainer says these are the three best exercises for longevity, helping you ‘live better for longer’
and the aim is to complete part one in the first 10 minutes
part two in the second 10 minutes and part three in the final 10 minutes
“I think it’s a fun one,” Brandon laughs. “For my big piece, you’ll either see a metcon [a high-intensity blend of strength, skill and cardio-focussed movements] or an interval-style workout
it’s typically going to look more like a metcon because that’s what I’ve found works best
training my body in a very specific way to keep moving
“Because I come from an athletics background
to the point where the intervals aren’t really preparing me for much
‘What does it look like without the rest?’ it’s often not very pretty.”

It’s hard to wrap your head around the sheer volume of Brandon’s weekly training plans
But she says exercising isn’t the hardest part of being a top-level CrossFit athlete
‘CrossFit athletes just go to the gym and get all the hard work done
then it’s over and they get to do nothing’,” she says
Outside the gym you’re constantly having to eat
Food is the number one most important thing to consider
There is no specific number of calories or protein goal Brandon aims to hit
she’s fine-tuned her routine to eat similar things every day and simply focus on “getting enough food in”
The amount of times I’ve been at competitions or at home
and I’m just sitting there miserably trying to eat my food
It’s funny when you see other athletes doing it and you think
Her sleep is the next most important thing
followed by looking after her mental health
“There has to be this balance of training and life
When you’re constantly thinking about training or work
I don’t think that’s what life is all about.”
she tries to listen to her body: “The tough thing and the cool thing to do is to train through really hard things

(WRDW/WAGT) - Slain Columbia County Deputy Brandon Sikes was remembered Monday as one of the brave men standing between good and evil
but someone who shied away from the spotlight in his heroism
Potentially thousands of law enforcement officers and dignitaries from across the state came to a funeral service at the Columbia County Performing Arts Center for the lawman who was shot dead April 26
A procession for Sikes began around 11:20 a.m
at the funeral home and ended around 12:40 p.m
Community members lined the route on Washington Road waving American flags as the procession passed
Whether they were directly or indirectly impacted by Deputy Brandon Sikes’ death
community members lifted up their local law enforcement officers
The motorcade was led off by dozens of law enforcement motorcycles
ambulances and patrol vehicles from a range of agencies near and far
No place along the route had more people than the roadway leading up to the performing arts center
Countless law enforcement officers were there to pay their respects
flags hung from towering aerial firetrucks to welcome the procession
Sikes’ remains arrived at the funeral site in a horse-drawn hearse as bagpipers played somber music
The flag-draped casket was carried into the performing arts center
where it was placed on a dark stage with two officers flanking it as soft piano music played
They were eventually joined by three other officers
where he noted the pain the community is feeling and said he hoped to bring a message of hope
He thanked law enforcement officers for their efforts to protect the community and offered a prayer
Mourners next heard a song selected by Sikes’ family
Also speaking was Columbia County Sheriff Clay Whittle
who emotionally remembered Sikes and noted his distinguished military career before he became a deputy
“The overriding goal for Brandon was to serve people and to help people,” Whittle said
He read a reflection from one of his staff members who noted that officers know each day they could be killed
and it’s not expected but should be in today’s society
and it’s the only job where there are unknown risks every day when every decision is “Monday morning quarterbacked to death.”
Whittle told future officers he hopes they go home safe every night and never have to live through something like this
“Somebody’s got to step in that gap and stand between us and evil,” Whittle said
“Deputy Brandon Sikes was one of those heroes.”
Also speaking was Sikes’ brother Thomas DeChant
“He was such a happy baby and loved to play and laugh,” DeChant said of Sikes
DeChant recalled meeting his brother’s future wife
DeChant said he knew Amber was someone special because she was the first woman Sikes brought home to meet his family
They got married at the rock quarry at Euchee Creek in a ceremony that consisted of five people
After working at Costco and then deciding to make a change in his life to better support Amber and their daughter
Sikes decided to join the Army and become a combat medic
“Because I get to help people who can’t help themselves,” DeChant recalled him saying
he found his true calling in 2018 as a Columbia County deputy
‘What better way to protect my wife and daughter than to make the area around them safer?’” DeChant said
And he was very excited to join the crime suppression unit
That’s because “I get to take bad people off the street and make the county safer,” DeChant remembered him saying
PHOTO GALLERY: HONORING SLAIN DEPUTY BRANDON SIKES
“It was never about the spotlight or notoriety for him,” DeChant said
“It was always about moving in silence and making a difference to protect his family.”
DeChant was followed by a video tribute featuring photos from throughout Sikes’ life
Kenney returned to the stage to tell mourners God doesn’t run from the pain the community feels but runs toward it
He said God cares – and someone else who cared for others was Sikes
and he was willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for their well-being,” he said
“he didn’t do it for himself; he did it for us,” Kenney said
“He put this community – all of us – ahead of himself,” Kenney said
He asked people to care for Sikes’ family with actions
and to care for law enforcement in the future
He called on the community to be known as “Columbia County
where a military salute was held in honor of his Army service
The salute included the traditional three volleys of seven gunshots
His final call was issued over the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office radio frequency
Then there was an emotional aircraft flyover in his memory
That was to be followed by a private family burial
The funeral service drew law enforcement officers from across the region and the state
the Georgia Department of Natural Resources
the Georgia State Patrol and the Warner Robins Police Department
Also attending the funeral was Deputy Gavin White
who was injured by the shooter who killed Sikes but is making a remarkably speedy recovery
The community has been mourning Sikes for more than a week, remembering him not only for his bravery but also for his friendliness, including when he worked as a deputy at Augusta Prep
Blue flags have popped up across the CSRA in honor of him
along with an impromptu memorial along Interstate 20 near Belair Road
where he was killed by an RV driver deputies had stopped to serve with a temporary protective order
was building pipe bombs and converting guns to full automatic operation
Montgomery used one of those guns to kill Sikes
other explosives paraphernalia and ammunition

It’s been a month since I last used my weekly column space to discuss the on-field status of the Orioles
it was too early to make serious judgments
The Orioles are a fifth of the way through the season and … they’re still not a good baseball team
Their .687 OPS is in the bottom half of the league
And it’s unbelievably barely above .500 against left-handed pitching
.502 is actually higher than I expected it to be
The Orioles’ team ERA is worse than every team in the big leagues besides the Marlins
Their opponents’ batting average actually IS worse than the Marlins
although the Rockies and their elevation prevent them from being in dead last
my question was whether the Orioles’ slow start was an extension of their 42-46 slump to the finish line last year
I’m not sure that’s really a question any longer
This isn’t a team that caught in a funk and just needs to snap out of it
It’s a fundamentally flawed team and has been for some time
the Orioles are only 20 percent through the season
they’ll match the 19-31 start the 2019 Nationals famously got off to before going on to win the World Series
Last year’s Detroit Tigers were eight games under .500 on Aug
But just because there’s precedent for teams dramatically turning things around in the middle of the season
that doesn’t mean we can assume this team somehow will
What would make us believe there’s a path to fixing this
Zach Eflin appears to be on the cusp of returning
If Tomoyuki Sugano can sustain his success and Eflin is as good as he was before being sidelined
Dean Kremer’s seven shutout innings against the Royals May 2 were downright miraculous by Orioles standards
Perhaps you’ve heard that Kremer has a history of being a good bit better after May 1 than he is before May 1 …
Dean Kremer is a much different pitcher after April
he has a 3.52 ERA and 1.252 WHIP.If the Orioles get the latter the remainder of the season
it would be a massive boost to the rotation
two and a half starters when Eflin gets back
at least Félix Bautista looks like Félix Bautista again
Jackson Holliday is finally showing prolonged signs of being Jackson Holliday
He is hitting .341/.449/.561 since April 16
Gunnar Henderson is similarly showing signs of being Gunnar Henderson again
Jordan Westburg and Tyler O’Neill are on the cusp of returning
Will any of that fix their grotesque performance against lefties
After the Rangers fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker on Sunday
quite a few Orioles fans wondered if perhaps hitting coach Cody Asche might meet the same fate soon
But we know that’s not the scalp the most bloodthirsty of Orioles fans want
Is it time to have the Brandon Hyde conversation? Depends who you ask. And I’m doing lots of asking. CBS Sports MLB analyst David Samson, a former front office executive with the Marlins and Expos, thinks it is
While acknowledging the Orioles’ struggles aren’t Hyde’s fault
Samson is of the belief that they “have to” fire him
“I think this new owner is going to have to make a change,” he told me
“I’m sorry for Brandon because I know him well and I’ve worked with him in my career
But there is something going on in Baltimore that if you’re the new owner David [Rubenstein]
Samson actually thinks the Orioles should do it before Memorial Day because they need as much of the season as possible on the other side of the managerial change
Not everyone agrees. FOX Sports MLB analyst and two-time All-Star catcher A.J. Pierzynski asked the obvious follow-up
“Does firing him change anything?” Pierzynski asked rhetorically
it’s the same position players.”
So what would actually make things any different for a hypothetical managerial replacement
I’m still probably closer to Pierzynski’s opinion than I am Samson’s
despite joining the chorus of confusion as to why Charlie Morton appeared in a two-run game May 4
I’ve thought Memorial Day was the first appropriate time to consider that option and I’m not ready to move off of that
My gut tells me the Orioles are pretty much the same no matter who the manager might be the rest of the way
But I understand this is how baseball works
Hopefully something … anything … changes between now and then

20245 min readBeing Jamaican-raised and London-based lends a unique attribute to the world of Brandon Nembhard’s music
The influence of music throughout the entirety of his life can be felt through the angsty
yet philosophical questions Brandon ponders about through his work
No thought is left unturned and no question is left unanswered
His work takes the listener through the journey of his life
his experiences and the things that have shaped him
meshing together to create a deep layered piece that circles back to the title of the record
These questions are an amalgamation of unified ideas we all come across
confronting himself and solidifying his place in the UK music scene
Music is central to Jamaican culture and has been instrumental in influencing many sounds we here throughout the world
Being raised in such a music-centred country offered Brandon the ability to sprout his musical curiosity early on
you could hear music [until] three in the morning from my bedroom
Instruments are heavily praised but it’s just something you do
if you make music and it goes well then cool
Your parents definitely aren’t like ‘you should be a musician’
discussing the different social implications spanning from Jamaica to the UK
“Jamaica provides you with everything you need
weather and solitude is a thing out there too
The interaction with [the guy from] the local corner shop
There’s a different sense of community here.”
I took the title of the body of work as Brandon telling the people listening that there is never a better time than right now to focus on your ambitions
letting him expand on his own reasoning behind the conscious title pick
Explaining his reasoning behind the title of the project
you being in the right place at the right time with the right people surrounding you or having the correct resources
you do what you can with what’s currently in your possession
What’s in your immediate proximity and build from there and get started
If you feel like you need to wait in order for you to even do something
more time you’ll find yourself in the same position as years go by”
“It’s like the second shout of the [project]
I’m looking forward to it being experienced as a whole
“People say don’t half-ass anything and I think there’s some truth to that”
Brandon responds after I asked him about a previous statement he made
He goes on to share his perspective on work ethic and the hustle of being a growing artist
The introduction to Brandon’s sound for me and many others was his last EP
that gave an insight into this artist that was just bubbling under and breaking into their sound
I wanted to know what the difference was for Brandon when it came to this newest project
It was more of a compilation EP of songs I really liked and put together
it’s not a painting or a puzzle you have to put together
This is a step closer to what I want to do in the future
they have a similar theme and the head-space I was in when I wrote them was shared.”
Brandon has become increasingly popular in a short space of time
capitalising off what it means to be an artist during the streaming era and using social media to his advantage
and constantly pushing the boundaries when it comes to translating his thoughts through visuals
Talking about the era we’re currently facing
“I want to make things for the sake of making it
not because the trend right now is to essentially create something that conforms to the palatability of social media
so I feel like I would have made something happen if social media wasn’t what it is
social media is what taught me to make music
"Knowledge being so accessible is what allowed me to do what I do and it’s also what has allowed me to get my stuff out there in a way that you couldn’t because you know music was a little more controlled before social media.”
“Maybe this career path wouldn’t have been for me if social media not been what it is today”
I wanted to know more about the timeline of a project
When did it start and when does a project end
Is it when it has been submitted for release
or does the viewers reactions also act as a closure
the ending for me has been once I make the song
that’s it and then obviously I move into the more [visual] space but I want to make it the same thing
then make this video or series of video and that becomes a whole package essentially rather than just the music being done
are two different concepts and maybe merging them can’t be too bad
it’s always important to look onwards and put the best foot out in front
Referring to what we can expect in the coming months from Brandon
