Mark says the shoe "looks and feels really really old but it's lasted very well" The location of the shoe has lead to speculation that it wasn't simply dropped but was "placed in there as part of the building works" possibly as part of a theatre superstition "There has been speculation around the superstitions around placing objects in walls and in ceilings and in voids And apparently it's to ward off evil spirits So we think it's possibly something to do with superstitions because obviously in the theatre there are a lot of superstitions So we got the engineers  we've asked them to put it back into the roof void because we are all very superstitious as well So it's gone back in there and we'll be in there for many Mark says the shoe is "like a little time capsule" noting that finding such an old item really emphasises that Bridlington Spa has been the "centre of entertainment in Bridlington for many He says it's not the first time they have discovered hidden history while carrying out building works "There is so much history to the building We did some work in the theatre a couple of years ago and in certain areas of the theatre such as the Fly Tower there are chalked names and years on there The theatre is the oldest part of the building and dates back to 1907 and so we've got names and  years from the twenties and thirties in the fly tower where people have written So it is a rich history of local people and While some speculated the shoe found this week might be the original Cinderella shoe Mark Lonsdale commented that it would be wonderful to know who it truly belonged to The new facility is set to provide enhanced services to residents of Bridlington and the surrounding areas The official opening was attended by Chief Executive Tracy Wharvell and Chairperson Jim Doyle The office was officially declared open by chairperson Jim Doyle and local MP Charlie Dewhirst The new office is situated in the former Barclays Bank building on Manor Street Citizens Advice say this new base will provide the organisation with scope to expand their services and create a hub to work in partnership with other local organisations The building has been converted into a light spacious facility intended to provide a perfect new home for staff and volunteers and a comfortable Citizens Advice states their mission is to empower residents of Bridlington and surrounding areas with free independent and impartial advice on a wide range of issues Citizens Advice highlighted their status as an independent charity that has been supporting local communities for more than 85 years The building itself holds significant historical value for Bridlington It is described as part of Bridlington’s heritage it was built in 1800 as two separate properties Sir Henry Boynton (9th Baronet) of Burton Agnes Hall purchased the properties around 1811 He resided there until around 1832 but retained it as his townhouse Portraits of her are housed at Burton Agnes Hall The building also has architectural significance having once housed the practice of Francis Johnson Johnson was a renowned local architect known for his classical restorations and contribution to East Yorkshire’s built environment His firm operated from Manor Street in the 1930s before moving to High Street embedding the building in the town’s architectural legacy It is noted as a coincidence that Francis Johnson was also the architect responsible for the restoration of the Long Gallery at Burton Agnes Hall The building has been leased to Citizens Advice Hull & East Riding by the Lords Feoffees The Lords Feoffees have a charitable mission to benefit the town that dates back nearly 400 years Citizens Advice currently supports thousands of clients a year from across the East Riding They offer support in person in Bridlington at a weekly drop-in session on Tuesdays and through pre-arranged appointments on other days The new office opened for drop-in clients on Tuesday The event – which followed the government’s recently announced plans to change disability benefits – saw MPs from across the political spectrum meet with people affected by MS They were also joined by familiar faces including comedian Ivo Graham legendary R&B artist Junior Giscombe and former Lioness captain Mary Phillip Charlie Dewhirst MP talked to people with MS about the challenges they are facing accessing benefits to receiving treatment and care on the NHS This echoed the theme of this year's MS Awareness Week which is encouraging people to have #MSConversations Over 150,000 people live with the condition across the United Kingdom The condition affects the brain and spinal cord Symptoms are different for everybody and often invisible Many people with MS rely on disability benefits like Personal Independence Payment (PIP) to help manage the extra costs of their condition paying for visits from carers to help with things like washing Charlie Dewhirst says that this means the government’s proposed changes to disability benefits including plans tighten the PIP eligibility criteria could have a significant impact on people with MS “I’m proud to join the MS Society in speaking up for the MS community I look forward to drawing attention to the challenges that people with MS face Nearly 200 people are diagnosed with MS in our local area each year so I want to remind them that I am here to listen to how the condition affects them and what I can do to help.” Executive Director of Research and External Affairs at the MS Society “We’re so glad that Charlie Dewhirst MP joined us in Parliament to learn more about the reality of living with MS and almost half of those affected rely on PIP to help maintain their independence It’s vital we work closely with MPs from across Parliament to highlight issues like access to effective treatments disability benefits and the impact of the government's welfare changes “We look forward to working with Charlie to raise these topics in Parliament and champion the voices of the MS community we can bring MS to the forefront of political conversations and make real change.” To find out more about MS, and the MS Society’s the fact that these initiatives are only a beginning  The range of exercise programmes and other forms of stimulation needs to grow so that more choices are on offer.  And many people with Parkinson’s new forms of stimulation.  Please contact Sue and David on 07736 454 379 to have a chat about what’s on offer and whether it might suit you A housekeeper at Mallard Court in Bridlington has received a Temperatures are expected to cool as we head into the Early May Bank Holiday weekend but the lifesaving charity expects to still see an increase in visitors at the coast For those who find themselves in trouble in the water the RNLI is encouraging them to use the Float to Live technique to help ensure they stay safe Nick Ayers RNLI regional Water Safety lead said:  ‘We are expecting the coast to be extremely busy with this burst of warm weather We want everyone to enjoy being around the water but we also want to make sure people stay safe and know what to do in an emergency ‘Always visit a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags Float to Live: tilt your head back with ears submerged and try to relax and control your breathing Use your hands to help you stay afloat and then call for help to or swim to safety if you can In an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’ it’s important to remember to acclimatise slowly to avoid cold water shock Float to Live: Tilt your head back with ears submerged https://rnli.org/safety/float Bridlington RNLI on the East Yorkshire Coast added,  "when walking around the coast remember to check the tide times ideally in a waterproof pouch and keep dogs on leads Avoid taking pictures on cliff edges too and stay safe by not jumping into cold water from rocks or piers (Tombstoning)." The lifesaving charity’s lifeboats based across the UK and Ireland remain on service 24/7 The MP for Bridlington and the Wolds has received a response from the Home Office after receiving many calls and letters from residents concerned about the use of a local hotel to house asylum seekers Charlie Dewhirst MP has written a letter to Dame Angela Eagle* to clarify the government’s position over Bridlington’s Expanse Hotel being used to house asylum seekers Mr Dewhirst also recently held a meeting with the owners of the hotel after closing in early January following a period of difficult trading conditions and ever increasing costs Said Charlie: “I am grateful to the owners of the Expanse Hotel in Bridlington for meeting with me to discuss the future of the site and I appreciate that as a family run business for over 80 years the decision to close was not made lightly and has been incredibly difficult “I also want to thank residents who have reached out to share their views on this matter.” I can confirm that no discussions have taken place between the Home Office and the owners and they have absolutely no intention to make the site available for the accommodation of asylum seekers The family are hopeful that new owners will soon be found and the hotel can reopen in due course.” I have now received a response from the Home Office in reply to my letter of 17th January confirming that the Department has not had any discussions with East Riding Council regarding the hotel “I understand that the use of hotels for asylum seekers is an important issue for our community and I will continue to campaign to end this use of hospitality venues.” Thank you for your letter of 17 January to the Home Secretary about the potential use of the Expanse Hotel in Bridlington as asylum accommodation I am responding as the Minister for Border Security & Asylum This Government inherited an asylum system that was under exceptional strain with tens of thousands of cases at a complete standstill in a backlog We have taken immediate action to address the situation by restarting asylum processing and establishing the new Border Security Command to tackle people smuggling gangs Home Office officials keep the asylum accommodation estate under constant review but demand for asylum accommodation is volatile This means the Home Office often has to work at pace Officials are committed to working in collaboration with local authorities and partners to ensure accommodation sites are successfully managed and the impact on the local area and services is reduced as much as possible security and wellbeing of staff and those we accommodate we do not disclose information about specific hotels which may or may not be utilised by the Home Office to the general public I can confirm that officials have not had any discussions with East Riding of Yorkshire Council regarding the Expanse Hotel Home Office officials will write to the Local Authority Chief Executive and the constituency MP to inform them of our plans to house asylum seekers within the community *Dame Angela Eagle was formerly a Bridlington resident during her childhood years She was educated at St Peter’s C of E Primary School which has now been renamed to Our Lady & St Peter on George Street Contractors have commenced work on the new multi-storey car park on Beck Hill in Bridlington Several large container units have been lifted into place along Hilderthorpe Road and there are occasional traffic control operations as materials are brought to the site by heavy goods vehicles The work is expected to last until next summer East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to invest £15.5m in the creation of a new 426-space car park in the heart of the town centre.  A statement from ERYC says: “The high-quality development is set to enhance accessibility and drive forward the wider regeneration of Bridlington with the aim of generating around £35m for the town’s economy.  “The scheme marks a significant step forward in the council’s commitment to revitalising Bridlington and supporting its future growth.  between Manor Street and Hilderthorpe Road improve the appeal and support the rejuvenation of the town centre.”  “The council has worked closely with local stakeholders including the Lords Feoffees and businesses groups to ensure the project meets the needs of the town.  “The building aims to boost the number of parking spaces in Bridlington and enable drivers to park as close as possible to the town centre increasing the number of visitors and supporting local businesses.  “As well as offering better and more convenient access to the town centre and the harbour the site will offer secure night-time parking and attract people to the town centre in the evening, promoting the area’s night-time economy and overnight stays “The design consists of a series of vertical twisted fins on its exterior to create the impression of a wave in order to reflect the coastal setting.” Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) received an unusual call out recently The team were contacted following several reports from concerned members of the public about a‘penguin’ which was spotted on theBridlington South Beach The team arrived on the scene to find the bird…which was actually a Guillemot The bird was taken to a local wildlife centre following concerns from members of the public “Whilst the Guillemot can be mistaken for penguins when stood on the beach their long beaks and colours are quite distinctive” said Jordan Grebby from the BridlingtonCRT Bridlington has seen notable advancements in its primary care services over the past two years East Riding of Yorkshire Place Director at Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board Cox highlighted the transformation from a challenging situation in the town to a more robust and accessible system Over the last two years the number of GP practices in the town has reduced from 6 to 2 and now Mr Cox says there is potential for that to reduce to just a single practice "We have seen significant improvements that over the past two years We now have two large practices that are working together and we anticipate by I think we have much better access to care in primary care.  one of the practices the two week attendance performance was less than 60%.  so access to care through primary care is much Speaking to East Riding Council's Health Cox also emphasised the positive impact on access to primary care in the town resulting from the changes but admitted there are still improvements to be made the standard of access for primary care was to be seen within two days Now the standard we measured against is two weeks which shows how we have changed in terms of our ability to access primary care driven by a number of factors such as covid.  But we obviously want to get to back to the stage where people can be seen much more quickly in Bridlington access for one of the practices in two days is typically about 75% but there's still further to go." Bridlington is East Riding of Yorkshires largest settlement with over 41,000 registered GP patients The town experiences a combination of factors impacting health recruitment challenges in the health and care sectors Key findings from the survey included concerns about access to GP services Cox noted that it has "significantly improved over the past 2 years," "the aim was to be as transparent and open as possible and also not to suggest that in any way the population of Bridlington thought the NHS services were fantastic because I think what we'd say is that they are And although there are examples of very good care provided for the population of Bridlington although that has significantly improved over the past two years and Bridlington actually has some of the best GP access in the East Riding  however I think people's experience of that is is variable.  There were concerns about the utilization of Bridlington hospital concerns about access to mental health services there were issues around access to transportation" When residents were asked about their priorities for healthcare the survey revealed that the "most important thing is that the highest medical standards of care".  There were 745 responses through online platforms when we ask people what's the most important thing The most important thing is that the highest medical standards of care typically people also want their waiting times to be as short as is reasonable or as as short as is consistent with their condition.  then people also want wherever possible care to be close to them and for them to have ease of access people typically want "their waiting times to be as short as is reasonable" and "wherever possible care to be close to them and further Um to have ease of access" Cox says the results from this and other studies conducted by the ICB do show that people are prepared to travel to get the right treatment requirement for people is that they have high quality care particularly for things like elective planned operations people want to be treated quickly and  will often travel to more remote locations if that means they're going to be safely treated and they're going to be treated more quickly  When people are asked about the impact of travel most demographic groups say travel is a relatively low consideration in terms of how they access healthcare which not unsurprisingly considers that more significant So those people who are most disadvantaged are those people who are most likely to suffer from not having very local care the findings highlight several areas where access to healthcare is limited including dental services and general practice appointments Participants expressed frustration with long waiting times and what they deemed to be a lack of certain services locally such as Accident & Emergency (A&E) care Mental health services were also flagged as needing significant improvement with concerns around long waiting times and insufficient support The comprehensive feedback from the survey has led to the drafting of a Health Improvement Plan for Bridlington focusing on priority programmes such as public health This plan aims to provide a framework for the health and care community in Bridlington to work collaboratively to improve health and well-being outcomes for the population.  Cox emphasized that this plan "needs to be supported and delivered by all partners and enable focus attention to deliver its main priorities" Bridlington Town began the Easter Weekend with a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the Mounting Systems Stadium against Stocksbridge Park Steels Two changes were made to the Seasiders’ starting 11 with Alex Markham replacing Bolton Makwedza at right-back whilst Nathan Dyer came in for Sam Leverett as Josh Barrett failed a fitness test before the game Ahmed Salam got on the end of Markham’s cross Just five minutes later the deadlock was broken as Kurtis Turner whipped a free kick from the left flank into the box and snuck past Jack Hall and into the bottom right corner The hosts best chance of the game fell the way of Danny Earl who got on the end of a ball over the top and poked it beyond Townsend Michael Coulson then had an effort from the edge of the box saved before the visitors doubled their advantage after 38 minutes Just two minutes after replacing Luke Rawson Tommy Marshall headed home a cross from the left The Seasiders were forced into a change at the break with a knee issue for Coulson meaning he came off for Leverett Stocksbridge found the goal that sealed it A corner was cleared only to the edge of the penalty area where Alex O’Connor produced a great strike to make it three Tom Allan then had a couple of efforts from corners firstly heading Salam’s set-piece wide of the right post The central defender then got on the end of Matty Dixon’s inswinger The Steels managed the rest of the game well limiting the number of Bridlington opportunities They had another chance themselves in the 83rd minute but Hall saved well one-on-one and the ball rebounded just over the head of Marshall It’s been over a month since the Seasiders last took to the field at the Mounting Systems Stadium when they beat fellow relegation threatened Sherwood Colliery 2-0 Mike Thompson’s side have gone unbeaten winning 4-1 and 2-0 on the road against Heaton Stannington and Emley AFC Bridlington drew 2-2 against Liversedge FC Danny Earl opened the scoring for the visitors though the Sedge equalised through captain Joe Walton Earl looked like he’d stolen all three points in the 91st minute though just two minutes later Ben Atkinson made it two apiece - the least that the hosts deserved It felt like we thought that we could come here and just win the game Andy (Norfolk) just said it to me in there six (games unbeaten) from seven is a tough thing to do.” Liversedge’s relegation was confirmed whilst Sheffield FC and Sherwood Colliery are also now unable to avoid the drop The Seasiders are one place and three points above Brighouse Even Bishop Auckland in 11th can still mathematically go down as they’re just eight points off relegation The Seasiders will look to move further away from that dangerous 19th spot with a positive result against Stocksbridge as their current sixth place position means they are one place and two points away from the playoffs Bridlington were defeated 2-0 by Stocksbridge thanks to goals from Kurtis Turner and former Seasider Daniel Hernandez off the bench the Seasiders have beaten Stocksbridge the last two times they’ve played them at home and have never conceded against them in East Yorkshire Jack Walters and a second half Ali Aydemir brace Stocksbridge were reduced to eight men after the fourth goal due to two red cards before a player was forced off injured after all subs were made Matt Broadley headed home the only goal of the game from Lewis’ cross to ensure NPL survival whilst the other home encounter coast particularly near Flamborough and throughout Bridlington and East Yorkshire photographer Chrys Mellor captured the breathtaking phenomenon from Flamborough Headland Her stunning images feature the vibrant auroras illuminating the night sky with the historic old lighthouse standing proudly in the foreground This dazzling display follows a similar spectacle witnessed further north on Tuesday Whilst the current solar storm has diminished heightened solar activity suggests that more opportunities for sightings could arise in the coming weeks and months the Sun is experiencing a “maximum” phase in its 11-year solar cycle This period is characterised by an abundance of sunspots similar to volcanic activity on the solar surface these spots erupt in what are termed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) releasing additional material and energy into space When these eruptions are directed towards Earth our magnetic field channels the energy into our atmosphere at the poles resulting in the spectacular aurora displays Although the solar energy from this week’s CME has weakened fast solar winds may lead to “active” intervals as the Sun slowly begins to taper off from its peak activity over the next few years there will still be ample opportunities for auroras until 2025 as the northern hemisphere approaches summer with lengthening daylight hours chances to witness these sightings will become increasingly scarce Mike Thompson's men won 2-0 at Grimsby Borough thanks to goals from Michael Coulson and Danny Earl It meant they stay up after a strong finish to the season Thompson spoke to Brid Town TV after the game: Kick-off against promotion-chasing Belper is 3pm at the Mounting Systems Stadium The town's large paddling pool is located next to the Princess Mary Promenade chalets on the South Promenade and is supposed to be for children to play and have fun in.  East Yorkshire's Coastal services team say they've had a number of reports of people using the pool in other ways "Recently we have become aware that people are using the pool and channels to wash sand off themselves and their dogs There are showers provided at the back of the pool for rinsing and washing off.  Please help us keep it a safe and clean environment for children." It's a crucial encounter in their fight to avoid relegation from the Northern Premier League East Division Bridlington go into the final two games of the season on 43 points and therefore could ensure safety in Lincolnshire.  were it not for a three point deduction for Brighouse Town Mike Thompson’s side would only be out of the relegation zone on goal difference Both Brighouse and Bridlington suffered 3-0 defeats on Saturday with the Seasiders losing out to Stocksbridge Park Steels but it felt like it wasn’t going to be our day today we could probably be out there until tonight and we still weren’t going to score it just felt like that kind of game.” Bridlington had lost just once in the previous seven games The Stocksbridge game also left the Seasiders with some injury concerns “I felt like we’d have had Baz (Josh Barrett) back today and we’ve fitness tested him  before the game and he wasn’t right.  “We’ve taken Coulo (Michael Coulson) off at half time with a locked up knee We’ve got the boys in for a bit of a recovery tomorrow (Sunday) just to make sure that they’re good to go for Monday.” With just one day between games to recover Thompson will be hoping to have as many players at his disposal as possible in order to keep the team fresh they secured their Northern Premier League status for another season on Saturday despite losing 3-2 against Bradford Park Avenue Grimsby Borough travelled to the Mounting Systems Stadium on Boxing Day though the game was abandoned during the second half due to foggy conditions.  The Wilderness Boys won the rearranged game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Reece York in the fourth minute of first half stoppage time the last meeting between the two sides in Grimsby saw Bridlington come out the right side of a 1-0 scoreline with substitute Ellis Barkworth scoring with just three minutes remaining who represents the Bridlington Central and Old Town ward has announced her decision to resign from her position as Interim Branch Chairman for Bridlington and the Wolds Reform UK as well as announcing she will continue her work as an Independent Councillor The announcement was made on a social media post addressed to the party’s leader Cllr Bowtell joined Reform UK in March 2024 after defecting from the Conservatives In her letter to Mr Farage she said:  “I have poured my heart and soul into the party working tirelessly to support its growth and vision I have increasingly felt unsupported and abandoned in my role “I have been asked to deliver speeches with little notice and no preparation while my attempts to seek clarity and support from senior party members have been dismissed or ignored.” Cllr Bowtell opened the party’s recent event hosted at Hull’s Connexin Live where former Olympic Boxer Luke Campbell was named as Reform’s candidate for the upcoming Hull and East Yorkshire Mayoral election At the event she described Reform UK as being “noisy After the event Cllr Bowtell hosted a press conference where local and national media got the first chance to speak to Mr Campbell It was understood that Mr Farage would also be attending the conference however it soon became apparent this would not be the case In her letter to Mr Farage Cllr Bowtell told the party leader that  “leaving the venue before even supporting our candidate in the press conference felt like a reflection of how little care was given to this area.”  Cllr Bowtell also suggested the party’s leadership had a “lack of integrity and resolve” and a “chaotic lack of foresight.” In her letter Cllr Bowtell also cited the wider ‘civil war’ that has been rumbling within the party in recent weeks One of the five Reform MPs who entered the Commons after the 2024 General Election was suspended from the party this month after allegations of “workplace bullying and targeting of female staff” were raised has insisted any investigations into him are “based on zero credible evidence” and in a letter to Mr Farage Mr Lowe said: “I once considered you a friend I no longer do.” Cllr Bowtell said the treatment of Rupert Lowe “crystallised” her concerns “and proved to be the final straw.” Despite having left the party Cllr Bowtell has said she will continue to support the party “albeit out of necessity rather than enthusiasm.” She also wished Mr Campbell luck in his Mayoral campaign describing the Olympic Gold Medalist as “a decent individual.” East Riding Council now consists of just one Reform UK councillor Cllr Jon Dimberline of the South East Holderness ward A Reform UK spokesperson told the LDRS that the party has nothing to say on Cllr Bowtell’s resignation or her comments in the social media post has raised Scarborough Athletic’s on-going pitch issues with former Premier League star Graeme Le Saux.
