Alexander Isak earned a draw for Newcastle with a late penalty against Brighton at Amex Stadium.
Brighton were on course for a narrow win as they led through Yankuba Minteh with stoppage time approaching.
Newcastle had been awarded two penalties that were overturned by the video assistant referee (VAR) before being handed a third when Yasin Ayari used his arm to block Fabian Schar's free-kick.
After a lengthy review, the on-field decision stood and Isak coolly converted to take his tally in the league to 23 goals for the season.
A draw was fully deserved for Newcastle as they pushed and probed throughout the encounter on the south coast.
Brighton mustered just three further shots after breaking the deadlock in the 28th minute as they struggled to find any rhythm.
They did have a shout for a penalty of their own when Matt O'Riley appeared to have been caught by Sandro Tonali, but referee Craig Pawson waved away the appeals.
Newcastle substitute Callum Wilson went close to snatching all three points in stoppage time when he forced Bart Verbruggen to make a fine save.
The draw does no great favours to either side in their respective challenges for Europe, with Brighton staying 10th and Newcastle remaining fourth.
Premier League: Brentford put four past Man Utd, Isak earns Newcastle draw
Proud of Seagulls but have to focus on next match - Hurzeler
Brighton felt euphoric last weekend after two late goals saw them come from behind to pick up a much-needed 3-2 victory against West Ham - ending a five-game winless streak.
However, they did not appear to carry confidence from that result into this encounter and got a taste of their own medicine with Isak's late penalty denying them all three points.
Minteh earlier showed great composure in a crowded box to craft space and curl cutely into the far corner to score for the sixth time this campaign, but it was against the run of play.
The Gambia forward joined Brighton from Newcastle in a £30m deal last summer - after not making a single appearance for the Magpies.
He was happy to celebrate in front of the travelling fans - pointing at his badge and then the floor.
It took Brighton another 52 minutes to have their next shot as they were penned back by a Newcastle side desperate to take something from the game.
Home boss Fabian Hurzeler turned to his bench but could not find the right formula to get Brighton up the field and eventually the pressure told.
With three difficult remaining fixtures to come against Wolves, Liverpool and Tottenham, Brighton's hopes of qualifying for Europe are starting to look slim.
Magpies not at clinical best in front of goal - Howe
When a second on-field penalty decision was overturned with the help of VAR, Eddie Howe must have been thinking this was not going to be Newcastle's day.
Both interventions from the VAR were correct, though, with the first incident rightly chalked off due to Tariq Lamptey's foul on Anthony Gordon having happened outside the 18-yard box, while the second saw Joe Willock awarded a yellow card for diving.
It was third time lucky for the Carabao Cup winners, albeit after a lengthy VAR review, when Ayari clearly moved his arm towards the ball as Schar's free-kick was heading towards goal.
Isak is exactly the man you want over a high-pressure penalty in the last minute and he did not miss a beat as he sent Verbruggen the wrong way.
The Sweden striker has scored the most goals by a Newcastle player in a Premier League season since club legend Alan Shearer also hit 23 in 2001-02.
Brighton could have had no qualms had Newcastle snatched all three points when Wilson unleashed a powerful shot in the sixth minute of additional time.
The draw will leave Newcastle - who had won six of their past seven league outings - with mixed feelings, knowing that victory could have propelled them up to third but a loss would have left them with a huge target on their back.
Newcastle face Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton in their final three games as they look to hold on to a top five spot, which would secure a return to the Champions League.

Brighton shock Arsenal in six-goal thriller
Arsenal suffered a second heavy defeat in the space of a week as Brighton took advantage of defensive mistakes to dent the Gunners' hopes of a second-place finish
Brighton had lost all 13 of their previous Women's Super League games against Arsenal but a Jelena Cankovic double
sandwiched by goals from Fran Kirby and Kiko Seike
Kirby gave Brighton a 16th minute lead with a stunning curled effort from the edge of the box
though the way Beth Mead surrendered possession before Leah Williamson hesitated in closing down Cankovic typified Arsenal's shaky start
Alessia Russo went close to providing the perfect response as her close-range header cannoned back off the post just a minute later
Brighton goalkeeper Baggaley - a late addition to the line up in place of Melina Loeck - became very busy all of a sudden
denying both Frida Maanum and Kim Little from close range in quick succession
The 28-year-old produced a masterful stop when Foord met Caldentey's cross from six yards out
but couldn't prevent the ball falling back to Foord to slam home
Arsenal continued to push as Mariona and Maanum both tested Baggaley from outside the area
but it was the hosts that went into the break in control
A Seagulls corner was headed out to the edge of the box
where Cankovic sent a fizzing first-time volley past a helpless Zinsberger
Arsenal started the second half in the same wobbly way in which they began the first - Nikita Parris reached a long ball before Zinsberger but could only poke it wide
If that was a warning not to overcomplicate things
it was one Renee Slegers' side didn't heed
Zinsberger's attempted ball out to the wing under pressure was easily intercepted and played to an unmarked Cankovic
Not a single defender was in touching distance of the Serbian midfielder as she lobbed the ball over Zinsberger and into the unguarded goal
Arsenal's defending got even worse 90 seconds later - Katie McCabe dropped deep when her defensive colleagues pushed high
allowing Brighton striker Seike to race through on goal and finish expertly past Zinsberger
Caldentey pulled a goal back with a curled effort in injury time
before Jenna Nighswonger hit the crossbar from distance
A second successive defeat leaves Arsenal just a point ahead of third-placed Manchester United going into the final day of the season
while Brighton look set to achieve a club-best fifth place finish
'We need to take a look at ourselves' - Arsenal stalling at wrong time
Brighton had never beaten Arsenal in the Women's Super League
Slegers said her players needed to "neutralise" their emotions after the high of reaching the Champions League final was followed by a shock 5-2 defeat by Aston Villa
While Arsenal looked sharp enough in attack - Baggaley was forced into making 10 saves and could make a claim to be player of the match - in defence they were nothing short of a shambles
Squad rotation could be used as an excuse midweek
but on Monday Slegers fielded the same back four that kept Lyon at bay last weekend
Defeat means the winner will take second place in the WSL when Arsenal host Manchester United on Saturday
we knew what we wanted and needed to do to secure second place," Slegers said after the game
"We weren't successful but now it's about getting everything right and doing it against Manchester United instead."
A second place finish would mean entering the Champions League in the third qualifying round
In 19 days Arsenal will face reigning European champions Barcelona in the Champions League final
Barring a huge goal difference swing on the final day
Brighton will achieve their highest ever finish in the WSL
The afternoon began on a slightly bizarre note - before kick-off Brighton confirmed Poppy Pattinson
Dejana Stefanovic and Pauline Bremer would all be leaving the club this summer
though manager Dario Vidosic was unaware the news had been made public until Sky Sports told him so
goalkeeper Loeck suffered a suspected finger injury
stand-in goalkeeper Baggaley was superb despite being thrown in at the last minute
we had to be resilient together today to have a chance," Vidosic told Sky Sports

We fell to a disappointing defeat in the Barclays Women's Super League
as Brighton & Hove Albion hit four past us at Broadfield Stadium
Caitlin Foord scored her 13th goal of the season to draw us level in the first half and Mariona Caldentey hit a beautiful strike in injury time
but neither proved enough to withstand a courageous Brighton side.
It was an unnerving and breathless first five minutes
as a great fingertip save from Manuela Zinsberger denied Brighton's very first shot
and Caitlin Foord rounded the keeper only to put the ball just wide of the post
Just as we regained our composure and began to threaten the hosts
Frida Maanum and Alessia Russo both saw solid efforts saved by an impressive Sophie Baggaley before the half-hour mark
Kim Little danced her way into the Brighton box with ease
only for her shot to go straight into Baggaley’s hands
The Brighton keeper continued to pull off save after save
but Caitlin Foord finally brought us back on level terms in the 29th minute
Baggaley denied a signature long-range strike from Maanum just before the half-time whistle
Jelena Cankovic unleashed a rocket through a crowded box
and suddenly our Gunners were behind once more
a rapid counter-attack from Kiko Seike was prevented by some good defensive work from Leah Williamson
The Seagulls’ onslaught had only just begun
receiving a surprise scoop over the top and dinking the ball over Zinsberger
we were fishing the ball out of the net once more
A clever cross from Marisa Olisalgers found an onrushing Seike
who fought off Katie McCabe to score with a first-time strike
Renée Slegers then made a quadruple substitution
Jenna Nighswonger and Stina Blackstenius into the fray as we tried to salvage something.
our Gunners fell short at every turn in the second half
Not even a class strike from Mariona Caldentey in the second minute of injury time was enough to pull back a result and the afternoon finished 4-2 to the Seagulls.
This weekend's clash with Manchester United will now decide who finishes second in the Women's Super League standings

Five changes as Whitworth makes debut in goal
10 - GOAL: Whyte puts Palace ahead early on
14 - GOAL: Walker-Smith heads home to double the lead
45: Dashi’s 20-yard effort is parried away
65: Somade makes a good block to deny Brighton
74 - GOAL: Brighton pull one back through Silsby
76 - GOAL: Ibrahim quickly nets another to equalise
78 - GOAL: Brighton take the lead through Silsby
82: Benamar’s effort from a corner is blocked
89 - GOAL: Fasida nets a stunning strike from 25-yards out to draw Palace level
In their final game of the Under 18 Premier League South campaign
Crystal Palace U18s welcomed rivals Brighton & Hove Albion to Copers Cope
aiming to finish the season as strongly as possible
with goalkeeper Harry Whitworth making his debut at U18s level between the sticks - he is the younger brother of first-team goalkeeper Joe Whitworth
The other changes saw Charlie Walker-Smith and Matteo Dashi returning from injury to make their first appearances since December and October respectively
while Joel Drakes-Thomas and Jacob Fasida also returned to the squad
Palace took the lead early on with 10 minutes on the clock
Drakes-Thomas had space to run into down the right and managed to deliver a ball towards the far post where Whyte was lurking
Whyte saw his initial header cannon back off the bar before reacting instinctively to force in the rebound
The young Eagles were a goal to the good and were quickly in search of a second
It nearly came immediately as Benji Casey was slipped in behind
though Finley Taylor charged out of his goal to deny him
A second did come just a couple of minutes later as the returning Walker-Smith glanced a header in perfectly
It was centre-back to centre-back as Fasida played perfect ball towards the near post
The first-half continued in much of a similar vein
with Palace continuing to create chances and stifle any of Brighton’s attempts
Dashi saw an effort from 20-yards out parried away
while Casey was again in behind and denied by Taylor
Whyte came agonisingly close to getting a third to potentially put the game to bed
Drakes-Thomas again down the right put in a dangerous ball to the far post that was met by Casey
his stooping header was parried up and eventually away by the ‘keeper
After the break Palace were still in control and even had the ball in the back of the net again
following a great ball from Whyte into Casey
but the latter was adjudged to have been offside in the build up
who had one of his strikes against West Bromwich Albion nominated for Goal of the Month in April
nearly added a third after going on a surging run through the middle of the park
though his finish was parried behind by the ‘keeper
Past the hour-mark and Brighton had chances of their own
though the Palace defence stood tall with good defending from Fasida
With just over 15 minutes remaining Brighton launched a spectacular comeback to take the lead from 2-0 down in five minutes
Tyler Silsby netted the initial goal to halve the deficit and then the third to put them ahead
This massive swing in momentum meant Palace were now chasing a game they had previously been in control over for the past 60-70 minutes
Dean Benamar saw an effort blocked following a corner
while Rylan Brownlie nearly led a perfect breakaway
It looked as though Palace were going to lose on the final day to their bitter rivals
but a moment of magic from Fasida saved the day on the stroke of stoppage time
Brownlie’s ball in after a corner was headed back out and the centre-back was running onto it and smashed home a 25-yard stunner from distance on his left foot
late free-kick in the 95th minute looked threatening from Brighton
Fasida’s late equaliser ensured that the side were guaranteed of at least fifth depending on remaining fixtures in the league

Boss Graham Potter has urged his players to translate their positive response to recent disappointment on the training pitches to the match arena
ahead of Sunday’s visit of London rivals Tottenham Hotspur
West Ham United welcome Ange Postecoglou’s troops to London Stadium sat 17th in the Premier League standings
after last weekend’s agonising 3-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion that extended their winless run to seven games
Despite having last earned a three-point haul at home to Leicester City back in late February
the Hammers have remained competitive in each of the following fixtures
and while earning points against the likes of Everton and AFC Bournemouth
and pushing champions Liverpool very close last month
With four games of the 2024/25 season remaining
Potter is itching for a consistent performance back on home soil that could spark a fast finish
and a climb up the ranks with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 13th only five points ahead
A final derby of the campaign promises a bustling atmosphere in the east of the capital
and with 16th-place Tottenham having endured a similarly tough domestic campaign
there will be real hope among the home crowd that their team can earn a full share of the spoils and leapfrog their opponents in the table
The Lilywhites will have taken plenty of confidence from their 3-1 win over Norwegian outfit Bodø/Glimt in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals first leg on Thursday however
and will be itching to generate further momentum ahead of the second leg back on the continent next week
Potter sat down with members of the press to discuss a range of topics
including his reaction to last Saturday’s Brighton result
I think it’d be surprising if I wasn’t upset after how that game unfolded
Then it’s just about accepting the human being that we all are and then going
and you can see how competitive the league is
who are doing so well in the [UEFA] Europa League
and you see how tough the Premier League is
but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again
it’s a fantastic challenge and I’m really enjoying it
and this is a great Club with a desire to do better
so I have to accept that and work as hard as I can to help things improve
so you can imagine that they have been low
but at the same time they’ve been really good in terms of how they’ve gone about picking themselves up
We spoke after the game about being together
We’ve got a big squad here and it’s not always easy to have that togetherness
And so how the Brighton game unfolded was tough for everybody
the job has been to try to acknowledge the feelings that you have
and then go from that to showing a good response in training and in the next game
There’s no point in talking too much; it’s about showing a response
We go into Sunday and we have to put on the right performance
We know how big the game is for our supporters
And it’s hard when you’re where we’re at now to talk with too much positivity
If you take the emotion out of the Brighton game
but that’s not really what you want to speak about when you’ve had such a disappointing feeling
We want a front-footed performance - one that shows who we are
full of pride - and to come away with the points
They’ve had a tough season in the Premier League
And then you add on the fact it’s a London derby
and the added importance for our supporters
I feel for our supporters because they’ve had a tough year
And we want to try and give them something back
and I think we’re looking towards pre-season [for his return]
depending on how he reacts and how he goes
but the target would be the first few weeks in pre-season

Leicester and Ipswich have earned less than West Ham’s 13 points in 14 games
The thing those three clubs have in common: they have been relegated
In theory, West Ham’s trip to Brighton offered a chance for redemption as Potter returned to the club where he enjoyed three and a half seasons
And there was no better time to play them with Fabian Hürzeler’s side winless in five league games
two different stats were a sign of what was to come: Brighton had conceded at least two goals in each game of that winless run and West Ham were without a comeback win all season
A 3-2 Brighton victory should have been no surprise really
Of course I’m going to be upset … If you want me to swear
Brighton dominated possession in the first half and Hürzeler’s side looked much more threatening than Potter’s team
View image in fullscreenKaoru Mitoma heads home Brighton’s equaliser against West Ham
Photograph: Maja Smiejkowska/ReutersBrighton’s pressing and probing paid off in the 13th minute when Yasin Ayari curled a stunning strike into the top right corner from the edge of the box
who often found himself in space on the left
played the ball infield to Brajan Gruda who teed up Ayari for the finish
Adingra found himself involved in the action again when his goal was ruled out for offside after a fantastic double save from Alphonse Areola
The Ivorian winger tapped in from six yards out but as soon as he started to celebrate
the flag went up to signal that Mats Wieffer had strayed offside in the buildup
Tomas Soucek had a couple of chances in the first half
the first of which hit the side netting from a tight angle after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s pass
His second opportunity was even better: a towering header tipped on to the crossbar by Bart Verbruggen
Still it was not enough from Potter’s side
What West Ham lacked in finesse was made up for in away support
Perhaps relenting to pressure from the crowd
Yet, the attack seemed to be the only thing going for West Ham as Potter delayed making another change. Against the run of play, Bowen curled in a perfect cross for Soucek, who had the simple task of heading past the keeper from four yards out.
Potter was seven minutes away from the biggest victory of his West Ham career but his former club did not get the memo. With the clock ticking down, Brighton launched the ball into the box. Gruda headed the ball across to Kaoru Mitoma who headed in the equaliser with two minutes to go. The stadium erupted.
Then, just when you thought it could not get any louder, Carlos Baleba decided to rival Ayari and curl in a winner from the edge of the box. Delight for Hürzeler and despair for Potter.
BBC Sport football news reporter at Selhurst ParkPublished5 April 2025It was a game that
had little riding on it - but try telling Crystal Palace and Brighton that
Three red cards - two for the Eagles, one for the Seagulls - and wild celebrations from the hosts following a dramatic 2-1 win showed that it wasn't 'just another game' to the teams involved
Supporters of other sides often poke fun at the fixture because of the 45-mile distance between the clubs
but it's a dislike that has been building since the 1970s
You won't find anyone from either club referring to it as the 'M23 derby' - as it is so often called in some quarters - but this was the latest chapter in a serious rivalry
Palace went in front through Jean-Philippe Mateta in just the third minute when the striker
who has built cult hero status with supporters thanks to his goals and corner-kicking celebration
Danny Welbeck equalised with a goal that made him Brighton's all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League
before wing-back Daniel Munoz scored what proved to be the winner
Eddie Nketiah has had a mixed time at Crystal Palace since his move from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £30m
The one-time England international was brought on in the 68th minute here - only to be sent off 10 minutes later
His first booking was for simulation when he went to ground in the penalty area after a challenge from Pervis Estupinan
and then he received a second yellow for a high foot on Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke
The game looked like it was unravelling for the Eagles when Marc Guehi was sent off for a late challenge
leaving Palace with the prospect of playing a lengthy stint of added time - 12 minutes were signalled
The red cards did not stop there and Van Hecke received one when he brought down Daichi Kamada six minutes into injury time
It's a rivalry that might not leap to mind first for every football fan
But a rivalry is exactly what Palace and Brighton have
It all started when the two teams played each other five times in 1976
Crystal Palace were managed by Terry Venables and Brighton were led by Alan Mullery
The two had been team-mates at Tottenham Hotspur but were never close
This was in the days before penalty shootouts were an option to decide FA Cup ties
And the teams involved kept on replaying until there was a winner
Crystal Palace beat Brighton 1-0 in the third game
Brighton boss Mullery says he had a pot of boiling hot coffee poured on him by Palace fans
"So I pulled a handful of change out of my pocket
Crystal Palace,'" he told the Guardian - and since then the two clubs have never got on
Brighton used to be known as the Dolphins but changed their nickname to the Seagulls and Palace fans argue it was done to be similar to their nickname
Palace have been in the Premier League since 2013 - thanks to goals from club icon Wilfried Zaha
they beat Brighton in the Championship play-off semi-final on their way to sealing promotion at Wembley
That game also had its own issues, though, as on entering their dressing room before the match, the Palace team found excrement on the floor.
the teams meet more regularly - with a number of tight recent encounters
Before Saturday's incident-packed game
the five previous matches at Selhurst Park had ended 1-1
Palace won a game that will live long in the memory - completing their first league double over Brighton since the 1932-33 season
'This win was for our fans' - Glasner after Palace seal victory with nine men
Crystal Palace boss Glasner on his feelings after the game: "It's a massive win but I'm really exhausted because there was so much going on and [because of] this atmosphere in the stadium
"The fighting spirit of the team and the togetherness with our fans
you have to experience and that is great to get this experience and be part of it
I'm really happy to lay on my sofa and just do nothing today."
On joining in with crowd chants: "I could see how the players were fighting together in many situations
such quick players and I felt that they need all the support we can give
I needed something to do with my arms as I couldn't keep them in my pockets
it's a really fantastic win today."
On feeling like stoppage time would never end: "We defended with a lot of passion
with a lot of heart but always waiting for this moment to go forward
"Like when JP [Mateta] and Maxence [Lacroix] celebrated on the pitch but it was still not over because we thought maybe we would play until sunset
It is the character of this group and the character of these players."
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler on how the game played out: "Very emotional game
Difficult to get a rhythm into this game especially in the second half
"That was a little bit to our disadvantage
We weren't able to control the game like in the first half because of everything
The emotional final part of the game didn't help us to control it
Of course to have these emotions inside of you but in the right moments and at the right timing
It didn't help us to get the rhythm back and that is something we have to learn."

Brighton could not have asked for better opponents as they attempted to get their season back on track after four games without a win

Our Gunners hit the road for one last time this season in the Barclays Women's Super League to face Brighton at 4pm (UK) on Monday
With Chelsea crowned league champions in midweek
the battle to consolidate second spot is on as we prepare to face third-place Manchester United next weekend
PURCHASE TICKETS FOR OUR FINAL GAME OF THE SEASON
We've already faced Brighton twice this campaign - once in the WSL and once in the League Cup - pulling off convincing victories on both occasions.
Our Gunners hit four past the Seagulls on a January trip to Broadfield Stadium
Kyra Cooney-Cross and Mariona Caldentey all scoring in the space of 18 minutes.
When we hosted Dario Vidošić's side at Emirates Stadium back in November
Brighton are on course for their best-ever finish in the Women's Super League
currently sitting in fifth position with goal difference on their side over Liverpool
The Seagulls have racked up seven wins so far
as well as pulling off an impressive draw with Chelsea back in March
They host us in Crawley off the back of a lucrative trip to Merseyside
where a stoppage-time winner from Nikita Parris secured all three points in a 3-2 win.
It's also been a successful season for one of our Michelle Agyemang
who has been on loan with the Seagulls since the start of the season
Our Young Gunner has been on the scoresheet five times during this spell and was recently nominated for the WSL's Player of the Month award for April.
Slegers on Brighton: "I think we have had a lot of players playing against Brighton across those two games
I'm happy with those performances, but this is going to be a whole new game
"They're also further in their development as a team and they will pose us new challenges
especially when you play against the same opponent
we come away from the Lyon game and now this Aston Villa game
so we have to build ourselves up to play against Brighton."
We've had no fresh team updates since Wednesday's clash with Aston Villa
where Daphne van Domselaar was not available.

Brighton and Hove Albion ran out 4-2 winners over Arsenal to stay fifth in the Women’s Super League table heading into the final weekend.
Brighton dealt a blow to Arsenal at the Broadfield Stadium on Monday afternoon, securing their first ever league victory over the Champions League finalists in style as the penultimate weekend of the WSL season drew to a dramatic close.
Renée Slegers approached the fixture with a full-strength selection, opting for six changes following Wednesday’s 5-2 defeat away at Aston Villa. Ahead of kick off, Dario Vidošić’s side announced that five players are set to depart the club. Namely, Poppy Pattinson, Guro Bergsvand, Maria Thorisdottir, Dejana Stefanovic, and Pauline Bremer are will take their leave from the Seagulls.
Baggaley; Thorisdottir, Bergsvand, Parris, Cankovic, Seike, Hayes, Kirby, Symonds, Olislagers, Auee
Zinsberger; Fox, Williamson, Catley, Mariona, Mead, Little, McCabe, Maanum, Foord, Russo
Campaigning for their highest ever finish in the WSL should they stay ahead of Liverpool on points come Saturday, fifth-place Brighton were hungry for three points in front of their vocal home support. Their press was well-organised, as they looked to capitalise on a clumsy Gunners backline.
Fran Kirby opened the scoring for the hosts in the 16th minute, firing a world-class finish into the top right corner and far beyond the reach of Manuela Zinsberger.
The equaliser for Arsenal arrived through Caitlin Foord, just over ten minutes later, after Sophie Baggaley saved her initial attempt and she slotted home the rebound.
Albion were back in front before half-time through another wonder goal, this time scored by Jelena Cankovic. A well-delivered corner was initially cleared by the Gunners’ defence, but Cancovic was on the edge of the box ready to pounce. And pounce she did, volleying from the edge of the box straight toward the back of Zinsberger’s net.
Brighton commenced the second half in spectacular fashion, scoring two goals in just a couple of minutes to double their lead over Arsenal.
The first was provided by Cancovic from the edge of the penalty area in the 53rd minute. Her left-footed superb strike flew past a stunned Zinsberger following some impressive buildup play from Brighton.
Kiko Seike then chipped the slightly shaken goalkeeper after picking up a great ball from behind, as Arsenal failed to deal with the Seagulls’ ‘attack from the back’ approach.
Mariona Caldentey scored what would only be a second consolation goal for Arsenal during injury time. Her curling effort made its way past Baggaley, who had an exceptional 90 minutes.
The dying moments of the clash were scrappy, as Arsenal finally came to life but had done far too little far too late to overturn the deficit.
The Gunners must now fight for second place against Manchester United at the Emirates next weekend, while Brighton are on the brink of celebrating their highest ever WSL finish, and an inaugural victory over Arsenal in the competition. An honourable mention must go to Baggaley, who made countless saves of the highest calibre for Albion, despite only coming into the lineup shortly before kick off after Melina Loeck withdrew.
Slegers then reflected upon a missed opportunity to avoid the dreaded Champions League qualifying process faced by the WSL’s third-place finisher.
“We were very aware of our position, and winning today would have secured second place — we spoke about it and it was a motivation and incentive we wanted to use. We weren’t successful today, it is tough lessons learned these last two games.
Slegers then admitted Arsenal were ‘lucky’ to have another shot at securing second place against Man United on Saturday.
Asked about the squad’s mentality with the WSL’s finale on the horizon, and their UWCL final against Barcelona just around the corner, Slegers admitted she wasn’t thinking about Europe just yet.
“I haven’t been watching Barcelona yet. The here and now and Brighton was the most important game, finding balance is important. It will always be there in the background but we have to focus on the here and now and that is what we try to achieve with the whole staff.”

Second half we appear to be upping the game with the introduction of Gordon and what feels like instantly he wins a penalty right in front of us
the purgatory that is VAR steps in and the foul is ruled just outside the box
Willock is definitely inside the box and takes a tumble
From my perfect position I think it’s a good tackle and expect the ref to wave play on but no
More VAR shenanigans before Willock is booked for diving and no penalty again
I have no idea whether it was a penalty or not
From our vantage point it was a sea of bodies and who could tell what had happened
I haven’t seen any replays but I have heard that it was given for handball
Isak lines up the penalty and how I held it together not to celebrate is a mystery
Unlike my lad who celebrates along with an old guy in the row behind us
if Wilson had burst the net with that shot instead of a good save by the keeper
we would have been jumping up and down in ecstasy…but it was not to be
We were not at our best today but I’ll take the point

Ancient reports tell of a time when circuses were all about real
and a fat man in a red suit (not Santa) presiding over it all as trapeze artists zoomed overhead
Acts such as Cirque Du Soleil changed perceptions of circus some time ago
In this preview of a number of the shows appearing over the coming weeks
Revel Puck pitch their big top and give us a taster of what they have to offer the circus visitor in 2025
Hosted by a female ringmaster (Ringmistress
Ringperson?) who seems enthusiastic but is let down by a slightly iffy sound system
the first couple of acts actually feel rather like throw-backs to an earlier era
audience members are invited to enter the ring and shine torches on two artists as they perform some dance and acrobatic moves
apparently illustrating themes of trust and risk
If this is the first time you’ve seen someone stand on another person’s shoulders there’s a chance you might find this impressive
Next up was a roller-skater dancing around the ring and then spinning some hula hoops around her body
but didn’t strike me as particularly original
Things look up as we move towards the end of the short first half
A pair of dancers inhabit big top tent-style props while dancing to East 17’s House of Love
but their act is lifted by the originality of the performance and the ingenious use of their props
This is followed by two more dancers with enormous balloons attached to their heads
into which they proceed to immerse their whole bodies
the concept isn’t complicated but the imagination and brio of the act make it hilarious and joyful
The Revel Puck Circus runs throughout Brighton Fringe, and as this opening gala demonstrates, provides a showcase for both traditional and edgier circus acts, so visitors should have no trouble finding themselves something which suits their particular tastes.
The Revel Puck Circus plays until 1 June at Brighton Fringe.

Renée Slegers has given her assessment of another tough loss as we draw closer to the end of the Barclays Women's Super League season
of course," said our head coach after the full-time whistle. "They got a chance early in the game
and I think that somehow gave them belief. But then there are three or four goals that are turnovers
We really need to do better on the ball and be better positioned. That's a collective responsibility.

Football writer Adrian Clarke looks at key tactical points and players who can be decisive in Matchweek 35
Brighton have beaten Newcastle twice already this season
so the Seagulls are chasing an impressive hat-trick when hosting the Magpies this Sunday
after the two away victories at St James' Park in the Premier League and FA Cup
it would be the first time Brighton have ever defeated the same team three times in one season as a top-flight side
Newcastle are in third place and desperate to stay inside the top five, while Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton believe they can still finish high enough to earn European football in 2025/26
No Premier League side has won more matches since 14 December than Newcastle
who have out come on top in 14 of their last 19 games
Yet their away form against top-half opponents is surprisingly poor
A 3-1 win at Nottingham Forest is their only victory in eight matches so far against their fellow top-11 sides
Newcastle have conceded 2.6 goals per game across those eight matches and this poor return will certainly provide ninth-placed Brighton with the belief that they can again cause Eddie Howe's side problems
Slow starts have been a recurring theme for Newcastle on the road at the division’s toughest opponents
they have fallen behind in all eight away matches when they have faced sides in the current top 11
seven of those early concessions came before the 22nd minute
If Hurzeler’s Brighton start Sunday's match quickly
they could catch their opponents cold once again
There has been a sluggishness about the Magpies early on in away games
and they have been ruthlessly punished for lapses in concentration
Howe’s back four has become fragmented too easily by longer passes early on in games
Manchester City undid them with real ease from an Ederson goal-kick, releasing Omar Marmoush to open the scoring (shown below)
In Newcastle's chastening 4-2 defeat at Brentford, the hosts played out from a goal-kick, moving the ball into midfield, before a lofted, switched pass to Bryan Mbeumo caused panic in the Newcastle defence
The Magpies lost their shape and left-back Lewis Hall became detached from the rest of the back four as Mbeumo went on to score (see below)
The Seagulls are not averse to going direct with their distribution at the right times under Hurzeler
This is a tactic we can expect to see them use on Sunday
They enjoyed success in that manner in the 1-0 win at St James’ Park earlier on this season
A quickly-taken Lewis Dunk free-kick pushed the Newcastle defence backwards, and Danny Welbeck’s subsequent one-two with Georginio Rutter unlocked the door
Hurzeler has triumphed over the Magpies in two differing ways
so his chosen approach for Matchweek 35 could be difficult to predict
It was a resilient backs-to-the-wall defensive display that helped them secure a 1-0 victory in the Premier League last October
They had just 40.1 per cent of possession, were pushed back at will, and were reliant on Newcastle missing chances, as well as Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen's outstanding display
but as you can see from these match stats below
Brighton's 2-1 extra-time win in the FA Cup was earned via a different strategic approach
boasting a lot more possession than they had on their previous visit
that seemed to suit them as they racked up 21 shots and 45 touches inside the Newcastle box
Brighton were able to find more spaces to run into
This suited Yankuba Minteh, who sprinted in beyond Newcastle's exposed high line to latch onto Joao Pedro’s through-ball and score against his former club
Howe’s defence was also caught square and looked rather disjointed as Welbeck scored the winning goal
The striker's movement to show for a Solly March pass was excellent, but with Tino Livramento playing him onside from right-back
it was not a goal the Newcastle head coach would have been pleased about
The Seagulls have plenty of pace in the wide areas
as well as good movement in the centre-forward positions
Having used those qualities to great effect in those previous meetings
Brighton will be well aware that all three goals scored against the EFL Cup winners came via forward passes that pierced a square back four
The space that style creates will suit Brighton's quick forwards
even if making it an open attack-minded game comes with plenty of risk against a team as free-scoring as Newcastle
It is a ploy Hurzeler may well turn to again at the AMEX Stadium

is set to spearhead the attack as Arsenal look to get back to winning ways
Renee Slegers' side have conceded nine goals in just two games to lose back-to-back league games for the first time in two years
It's the first time Arsenal have lost successive league games in the same season for two years and the signs were there in the first few minutes, when Kiko Seike almost broke the deadlock and then Mariona Caldentey nearly passed the ball into the back of her own net. It would be former players of the Gunners' biggest WSL rival, though, that really haunted them on the south coast, first when Chelsea icon Fran Kirby curled an effort into the top corner in the opening stages.
It was a lead Brighton deserved, having started well, but it only seemed to kick the visitors into gear. Alessia Russo hit the post immediately afterwards, both Kim Little and Frida Maanum were denied from point blank range by the brilliant Sophie Baggaley and then Caitlin Foord finally found the equaliser, getting a second bite of the cherry following a sensational cross from Mariona Caldentey.
GOAL rates Arsenal's players from the Broadfield Stadium...
The Magpis needed a late penalty from Alexander Isak to rescue a point at Amex Stadium but Murphy says that was the least they deserved
"Eddie Howe said in one of his post match interviews that their problem was they just weren't clinical enough
but actually it was an accomplished performance," he told Match of the Day 2
which is unusual with the quality forwards they've got
was that bit of calmness and decision making in the final third
Howe should be really pleased with the level of performance
"They controlled the game for long periods
It's just about finding the right option."
Ex-Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney added: "I think Newcastle are a really good team and a good watch as well
but what I liked about them was that they kept pushing
"They kept finding themselves in the right areas and doing the right things - it was just their little details
They have to get those right and then they win games comfortably."

Renée Slegers' side drew level shortly before the half-hour mark when Caitlin Foord slammed home a rebound after Sophie Baggaley denied her initially at the far post

Mariona Caldentey reduced their deficit in added time with a curling effort to beat Baggaley and offer hopes of a potential late fightback from the visitors

Hailing from New York, three piece rock band Sunflower Bean have hit the UK for a short run of in-store gigs to promote their fourth Album ‘Mortal Primetime’
It was released a week ago on Friday 25th April and has landed in the official top ten Independent Record Chart
Tonight’s show originally was set to be the first of the run
so is now the final night of the UK tour before the band head back to the States for a huge 25 date tour
It has been a while since Sunflower Bean have come to Brighton, the last time being at the Komedia back in 2022 (Review HERE)
one gig I was lucky enough to pick up a ticket for
I must admit I was getting worried Brighton was going to get missed on this short run of dates as it initially seemed to be a late addition
but what better time for the band to visit
the city is alive and buzzing with the Bank Holiday joy
good weather and Brighton & Hove Albion playing at home
I am hoping they won’t leave it so long to visit in the future
What with Sunday opening hours, we are allowed into Resident music at 6:20pm to secure our viewing positions and at 6:45pm the band came out to a big cheer
Vocalist and bassist Julia Cumming opened the evening by informing us of the slightly different set up “We are sunflower Bean from New York
I’ve never played on top of an amp for an entire show
This is definitely a first for me at Resident
with both drummer Olive Faber and guitarist Nick Kilvlen both positioned at the front of the shop counter
Julia standing centrally on a large Amp speaker behind the counter with her head almost touching the ceiling
The set started with guitar heavy ‘Champagne Taste’ also the opening track on the album
with great crashing drums from Olive throughout
I feel like an evil go-go dancer” Julia commented whilst on top of her amp
“You look like a crazy record store clerk” added Nick
causing a ripple of laughter through the crowd
Julia continued “Thank you to the record label Lucky Number and also to Resident for putting on this cool show on
it’s’ very rock and roll to put someone on an amp like this and say the show must go on
so thank you for supporting independent music stores and music”
Next came another track from the new album
Julia’s vocals are soft and beautiful throughout
with a fine guitar solo from Nick in the later part of the song before ending solely with Julia’s vocals to a piano backing track
rock grunge guitar vibe was back for ‘Shake’
the lead track from their 2024 EP of the same name
Nick was more prevalent on the vocals on this one
although there were some issues with his microphone volume being too quiet to start with
It was a good meaty song; a tune I feel is quite the connection bridge taking the band from their third album ‘Headful Of Sugar’ to their newer sound of ‘Mortal Primetime’
At this point tour manager Gareth came over to help retune Julia’s guitar at the pedals located on the shop counter as she couldn’t get down to them
We then went back to the new album with ‘There’s A Part I Can’t Get Back’
a slower song with Julia’s vocals sometimes sounding quite country in delivery
I think the band felt very settled into the limited movement vibe of their surroundings by this point
Julia said the next song was her “favourite from the album
but this time it’s going to be Elvis Costello
that’s who I feel like when I’m playing it”
The song was ‘Look What You’ve Done To Me’
The vibe on this one most definitely a departure from their usual sound
Julia’s vocal delivery almost like a monologue storytelling
the piano backing track was back for this one too
Olive’s drums far were calmer and measured and Nick’s guitar melodies different
but melding perfectly with Julia’s vocal delivery
she then explained “Sorry I have this stream of consciousness going on today”
the gentle ‘Take Out Your Insides’ and the album closer ‘Sunshine’ which Julia dedicated to a baby that was out in the audience (Yes
and she hopes that when she has a baby she will take them to a show and be as cool as this baby
who seems so cool and not bothered at all about it
‘Sunshine’ took us back to the soaring guitar sound from Nick
The final and bonus song of the evening was ‘Somebody Call A Doctor’ which was the first track on their 2015 ‘Show Me Your Seven Secrets’ EP
Whilst Nick warmed up his guitar after swapping over his Fender Stratocaster
Julia thanked the crowd “for supporting independent music
independent labels and coming to the store to rock out and inspire the band”
but descending into a gorgeous frantic finale at which point Julia stepped off her amp kneeling behind Nick on the counter while full on psych rocking out
a set I dearly would have loved to have been longer
but 35 minutes and 8 songs was going to have to be our fill before the signing session
This set and new album are quite different from my previous live experience with the band and their last album
The new album shows a maturing and evolution of the band
but now delivering a more personal and powerful punch
I think the constrained setting today added to the more stripped back feel to the set
but they delivered in buckets and I enjoyed every second of it
The band happily signed albums and did photos with the long line afterwards
The band have said they will be back in Autumn
touring late October into early November and Brighton will be a date
I for one will one hundred percent be there
Grab yourself their album before they sell out

Match Report: Brighton 4–2 Arsenal Women: Seagulls soar in historic WSL victory over Gunners | OneFootballJust Arsenal News
Brighton & Hove Albion Women produced a stunning performance to defeat Arsenal Women 4-2 at Broadfield Stadium this evening
marking their first-ever Women’s Super League victory over the Gunners
This result deals a significant blow to Arsenal’s hopes of securing second place and Champions League qualification
Brighton opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Fran Kirby, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot the ball home. Arsenal responded in the 29th minute when Caitlin Foord finished a well-worked move to level the scores
Brighton regained the lead just before halftime
with Jelena Čanković finding the net in the 43rd minute
The Seagulls came out strong after the break, with Čanković scoring her second goal in the 52nd minute, followed by Kiko Seike adding a fourth just two minutes later. Arsenal managed a late consolation goal in stoppage time
with Mariona Caldentey scoring in the 93rd minute
Player of the Match was Brighton’s goalkeeper, Sophie Baggaley, who saved many on-target Arsenal goals – 8/9 I believe but don’t quote me
This victory propels Brighton to fifth place in the WSL standings, marking a significant achievement for the club. For Arsenal
the defeat leaves their Champions League qualification hopes hanging in the balance
with a crucial match against Manchester United looming
Arsenal will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Manchester United on Saturday
in their final WSL fixture of the season – this is a match that will likely determine Arsenal’s European fate for next season
There is now only 1 point between Arsenal Women who are 2nd
and Man United who are 3rd in the WSL table
2nd & 3rd placements in the WSL will go down to the wire in Saturday’s last game of the WSL season
with Man City now unable to catch either team
both teams will go through to next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League – all that remains to be determined is whether they enter at the Round 1 or Round 2 stage of the competition
How are you feeling about Saturday after today’s performance

Brighton
Seaside towns aren’t just candyfloss and fairground rides anymore – not that there’s anything wrong with that
The fact is that the UK’s collection of seaside towns now includes spots which have thriving
elevated food scenes and popular romantic mini-break destinations
and Brighton is one of our favourites.
Yes, the beach is pebbly and the seagulls are a menace, but there’s a long list of reasons why this colourful, quirky patch of Sussex coast was named one of the best cities in the world for 2025
slap-up vegetarian food and top-notch pubs as well as seaside cafés
shiny new wellness venues and copious options for good (and I mean really good) fish ‘n’ chips
here are the very best things to do in Brighton
Thanks for subscribing! Look out for your first newsletter in your inbox soon!
Photograph: ShutterstockWhat is it? Brighton’s Grade-II listed pleasure pier (which is considered the finest ever built) with fairground rides, bars and restaurants stretching out into the sea.
Why go? The 525 metre platform of sweet treats, games, rides all surrounded by sea is undeniably iconic. It’s withstood storms, wars, and has even been renamed a couple of times, but it continues to stand proud as one of Brighton’s most recognised and postcard-worthy attractions.
Our take: Even if fairground rides aren’t really your thing, this has gotta be the grandest spot in the city to catch the sunset. Brighton Palace Pier is open til 10pm during the summer months, so head here at dusk and soak in the views.
Foto: ShutterstockWhat is it? Brighton’s artiest district
There’s a reason why these higgledy-piggledy alleys and avenues are one of the city’s biggest draws
colourful North Laine is the place to head for cracking coffee
pastries and incredible second-hand shopping
historical Lanes (to the south) are home to lovely restaurants
bars and artsy little boutiques.
Our take: one of Time Out’s favourite pubs in the UK is hidden away in the North Laine. Once you’ve rummaged through all the vintage clothes and quirky jewellery, cop a spot at The Basketmakers and get comfy.
Photograph: ShutterstockWhat is it? A rather fantastical-looking palace in the middle of town.
Why go? The Royal Pavilion is unsurprisingly Brighton’s most popular tourist attraction – just look at it – and while the opulent domes and minarets stand boldly apart from its surrounding buildings
the architect who was in charge of the building’s final extension
It’s a remarkable mish-mash of artistic and architectural inspiration.

About us

especially when played by six such superlative musicians
Directing with gracious elegance from the harpsichord
maestro William Christie wove the clear melodic lines of violinists Augusta McKay Lodge and Sophie de Bardonnèche together in the ornate musical tapestries of two exquisite Trio sonatas
Their music danced lightly over the elaborate bass and continuo parts
This Sunday afternoon concert began with such chic formality
yet between the two enchanting instrumental works came a spirited duet
Christie broke that formal spell with a sly glance at his wrist watch (remember
his hands and timing are the very essence of this performance)
there was a delay between the music stands being set up for the singers and their hurried appearance on the stage – of course we noticed his gesture and chuckled
You didn’t need to be a Handel scholar to find this duet familiar – he used the same tunes again in Messiah
I don’t want to trust you) is in translation and musically so very different from For unto us a child is born and All we like sheep
Portuguese soprano Ana Vieira Leite and Israeli mezzo-soprano Shakèd Bar blended perfectly together over the rich accompaniment
perfectly synchronised trills and mercurial changes of mood most beautifully
After a short Glyndebourne interval in unsteady Spring sunshine
we were treated to the pastoral cantata Aminta e Fillide
that Christie says the 23-year-old Handel wrote in a sober style – well
so it was momentarily in the overture until Bar
straying among the music stands and players – and then she was gone
All this too could have been just an hour of scholarly early music appreciation
but it was also very entertaining and such fun
The diction was so clear that it was easily possible to follow the intricacies of their tiff by reading the translations in the programme
the acting and delightful stagecraft told the story so well
Cellist Félix Knecht was fully in the moment and clearly enjoying every minute
that inconstant Phyllis took to flirting with him
Hugo Abraham carried on playing his double bass and keeping the music flowing
it all ended well and the ripples of spontaneous applause finally broke out into a well deserved
made a most beautiful conclusion to an intoxicating afternoon

The Westbourne and Poets’ Corner by-election candidates
Labour has won the Westbourne and Poets’ Corner by-election
holding on to a seat that became vacant two months ago while Reform polled more votes than the Conservatives
won the seat by 209 votes over the second-place Green candidate Geoff Shanks
The Liberal Democrats were close behind in third
was overjoyed at becoming a councillor when the result was declared at Hove Town Hall just after midday today (Friday 2 May)
She takes over a seat vacated by former Labour councillor Leslie Pumm who resigned from Brighton and Hove City Council in March
A total of 2,760 votes were cast out of 7,466 electors
The newly elected Councillor Parrott thanked everyone who voted for her and said: “I can’t wait to get stuck in.”
She said that her priority would be getting to know the ward and the people who live there and speaking up for people with disabilities and ways to tackle violence against women and girls
The results for the two seats in the ward at the local elections in May 2023 were
a total of 6,550 votes were cast by at least 3,275 voters
Labour now has 36 of the 54 seats on Brighton and Hove City Council
the Conservatives five and the Brighton and Hove Independents two
Congratulations to Michael Wang as the Liberal Democrats were close behind in third with 21.7% – our highest showing in BHCC for a while
Lib Dems in general did really well across the board
Worth reflecting that 15 years or so ago this was a safe Tory ward that no-one else bothered with much
Also worth noting that Labour’s share of vote was 32%
Most people aren’t happy with them either
32% isn’t bad when you think it was contested hard by the other centre left/left parties
The good news is the small number of votes for Tory/Reform ie closet racist or openly racist
Feels like Conservatives are paying the price for their objective mismanagement of the country
and those who remain on the right are being absorbed by Reform
Congratulations to Sam Parrot who will surely be an excellent and dedicated councillor
Reform UK are making huge gains across the country and in Westbourne & Poets Corner have overtaken the Conservatives
Great job Reform UK in their first outing in the city – well done all round
Dirty tricks and smear campaigns by Labour / Socialist Workers Party / SUTR were all they could do to attack Reform in Brighton and Hove
Keep on pressing down on the left and truly challenging the inept council and there dire leadership here in the city
after all the chat about winning the election
Punching downwards and Oswald Mosley tribute acts just aren’t very popular round these parts
Clacton-on-Sea might be more up your street than Kemp Town
Brighton & Hove will never be a Reform city
A terrible result for Reform Yuk is a victory for the good people of B&H
“Great job Reform UK in their first outing in the city ”
It wasn’t their first outing in the city
They had a candidate in the 2023 council elections and got 127 votes and came last in Hangleton & Knoll
The also had candiates in Hove & Portslade and in Brighton Pavilion in the general election
They would have had one in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven but did a deal with the SDP not to stand
For reference the so-called ‘dirty tricks’ campaign deployed against far right Reform UK by Brighton and Hove Stand Up to Racism in this seat seemed to involve
a) finding the candidates personal twitter feed and then b) reporting its openly racist and bigotted content to a wider audience and highlighting the support for fascists like Tommy Robinson on it
which forced the candidate to delete it mid-election… Maybe Reform UK could try and avoid such ‘dirty tricks’ going forward by not standing racist bigots who openly support the far right as candidates
The fight next full local elections could very much be between Reform
It would be interesting to see how well Reform do in the councils they have taken over by cutting council costs
We are paying some of the highest council tax in the country and the highest prices for parking permits
How many Brighton council workers are working from home and are they allowed to claim for heating and broadband costs
Why are we paying for council offices where this is provided
How many diversity and inclusion or other non-jobs are there at the council
Now Reform have power certainly in many councils it will be good to see what they deliver and if they do deliver I am sure many of us would be happy to pay less council tax and vote for them
There’s a lot in this comment that sounds like genuine concern about council tax and public spending
But look a little closer and it is full of familiar dog whistles; phrases designed to stir anger
Phrases like “non-jobs” and the targeting of diversity and inclusion staff are not neutral criticisms
They are part of a wider attempt to undermine the legitimacy of public sector work
This kind of language often travels with vague but loaded questions like “how many people are working from home and claiming heating costs?” There is no evidence for this
but it plays into a narrative that public servants are lazy or exploiting the system
most council workers are doing more with less
stretched thin by years of Tory central government cuts
It is no coincidence that the same arguments are being used by parties like Reform UK
who want to dismantle public services under the guise of “efficiency.” We should absolutely have debates about council priorities
but we need to challenge the use of scapegoating language that targets workers and minorities while letting the real causes of austerity off the hook
But let’s not pretend that stoking resentment against equality staff or hybrid workers is anything other than the politics of division
It doesnt take a genius to understand that less council tax leads to less or even poorer services than we receive now – a race to the bottom is in no-ones interest
Ironic that the candidate offering a complete nothingburger won
no matter that the party bears no resemblance to the Labour Kier Hardie started
You make a great example of how bad the conservative party is now perceived to have lost over 650 councillors
The reality in Brighton is though that it’s been a Labour run council for most of the last 30 years
in fact in the last 10 years greens only ran the council between the second half of 2020 when Labour gave it up
Am always intrigued by the perception it’s a green council
when it only ever was for a short space of time
It’s been a useful narrative for Labour to use so they can deflect from their time running things I guess
It is not long until the local Election campaigns begin
It is of course rash to infer those results from this one but there is likely to be a shift away from an overall majority
Will there be a return to the committee system
Wang perhaps owes some of his very good showing to his advocacy of something better than a shrunken King Alfred sports centre with which Labour again tries to palm off residents
Talk this evening about the next local election
What form will this take if yhe area is in the meanwhile merged with Worthing and Newhaven as part of a mayoral county
There should be an article about these uncertainties

The new Women's Super League marks the start of a new era for reigning champions Chelsea, with long-serving boss Emma Hayes having departed in summer to start a new adventure with the USA Women's team.
Last year they just about did enough to claim the title on goal difference ahead of Manchester City, while Arsenal will again hope to make it a three-horse race for the WSL title. Meanwhile Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham will hope to progress after further rebuilding this summer.
Crystal Palace were promoted to replace Bristol City in the top flight, while on a wider note, the league is now under the management and operation of a new organisation set up to lead women's football towards further growth and progression, with Nikki Doucet overseeing both the WSL and Championship in a new phase for the game.
Follow the live action below as Brighton & Hove Albion face Arsenal today in the WSL:

They kept going and that could be a crucial point
I still think it is Newcastle's to lose."

Brighton 1-1 Newcastle was the eighth time this season the Albion have conceded in the 89th minute or later

If Brighton do miss out on European qualification
the points dropped from an inability to see out games will be a major reason why
Lacking experience means they make rookie mistakes at times when they should be managing their way to three points

Giving referee Craig Pawson the excuse he needed to help the Toon once more
He might as well have draped himself in a Saudi flag and beheaded a couple of people for the bias he showed towards Newcastle all afternoon
Mr Pawson pointed to the penalty spot for the third time of the afternoon
Whereas VAR had overturned his previous two attempts to gift the Toon an equaliser from 12 yards
Alexander Isak duly converted to ensure it finished all square
Plenty of Albion fan ire rightly went the way of Mr Pawson
Not only was he determined to award everything to the Saudi Sportswashers
but he also ignored Brighton appeals for a penalty when Matt O’Riley was caught by Sandro Tonali
Fabian Hurzeler said afterwards he did not understand how or why it was not give
Especially in the context of the two spot kicks Newcastle received
only for them to be overturned by the video assistant
“The referee whistled when there was not even a touch and gave a penalty for them
I don’t see that there’s a big difference between the foul from Tariq Lamptey on Anthony Gordon instead of the foul on Matt O’Riley.”
But even with Mr Pawson having a car crash afternoon
it should not distract from the fact Brighton were not very good
And they might have even gone home with all three were it not for some excellent interventions from Bart Verbruggen
Two big saves in the first 30 minutes from Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy maintained parity
The first of those came when Mats Wieffer and Jan Paul van Hecke got in a right mess
Having weathered the storm of a strong Newcastle start
Brighton took the lead with their first shot on target
who sprinted past two opponents to score via a deflection off Big Dan Burn
Minteh seemingly likes a goal against his former club
This was the second time this season he has netted against the Toon
He also opened the scoring when the Albion won 2-1 at St James’ Park in the FA Cup two months ago
Eddie Howe introduced Gordon at half time and the Claire Balding look-a-like instantly made life much harder for Brighton
Gordon’s first touch led to the aforementioned tangle with Lamptey in the box
Only to be forced to overturn the decision because the foul took place outside the box
18 minutes from time and Mr Pawson repeated the trick
Joe Willock went down with a piece of acting good enough to have come straight from Byker Grover
Mr Pawson watched it back and decided to instead book Willock for diving
Minteh had the Albion’s second and final shot on target entering the final 15 minutes
Not bad for a bloke who was reported to have passed away in Rome two weeks ago
The pressure eventually told when Ayari momentarily forgot he was playing football rather than basketball
Brighton could have no complaints about the third Toon penalty. Isak duly converted. Hardly a surprise as a red-hot striker up against a goalkeeper who has made headlines this season in both Sussex and the Netherlands for his poor penalty saving record
The Albion almost snatched what would have been an underserved winner right at the death
Brajan Gruda swung in a free kick which Diego Gomez somehow headed off target
It was an astonishing miss which would have felt even more costly had Verbruggen not pulled off another outstanding save in the final seconds to foil Callum Wilson – preventing Brighton from conceding their ninth 89+ minute goal of the campaign
Imagine where the Albion would be without all those…
Bart Verbruggen topped the Brighton 1-1 Newcastle player ratings after making a series of excellent saves to earn the Albion a point
