BDB Pitmans has completed its rebrand as Broadfield
joining as the founding member of a planned global network of mid-market firms established by US turnaround firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M)
Broadfield officially launched this week (2 December) after signing up BDBP as its first earlier member this summer

History tells us that a troubled launch doesn't always spell disaster
Broadfield has maintained that all is well after suffering a few hiccups in its transformation from boring old BDB Pitmans into an international network
It got a dent coming out of the showroom when an email to clients announcing the launch of Broadfield did not blind copy the recipients
“On 2 December a communication was sent to a limited group of contacts where email addresses were inadvertently disclosed
The error was immediately picked up and an apology made to those concerned
Now it’s had to deal with a u-turn by a lateral hire. BDB Pitmans was hit with the departure to TLT of much of its highly-regarded Planning Infrastructure and Public Law practice in October 2024
but indicated it would bounce back with a recruitment drive.
The plan seemed to have paid off when Broadfield announced that Herbert Smith Freehills counsel Charlotte Dyer would be joining as a partner
this week all the firm’s posts announcing the new hire vanished.
with “all website announcement/LinkedIn posts announcing her as new planning partner taken down”
Broadfield’s spokesperson confirmed to ROF that “It has been mutually agreed that Charlotte Dyer will not be taking a role at Broadfield UK
and we wish Charlotte every success in her future”
The new organisation has said that BDB Pitmans will be just the first member of a global network
although as yet no other firms have signed up.
But don’t write if off just yet: “Broadfield remains focused on its commitment to growth and active recruitment into its infrastructure team alongside other parts of the firm
Preparations for expansion domestically and internationally continue”
Broadfield Partners’ launch was less a grand opening and more a fumbled attempt to climb the first rung of a shaky ladder
teetering precariously over the abyss of expectation
Somewhere in this bungle lies a parable about ambition
Such is the nature of houses of the ladder variety—fine on paper
catastrophic in practice when the foundations are just wishful thinking and unfulfilled promises
who could blame them for leaving before the first coat of paint dried on Broadfield's half-built facade
Won't be the last "hiccup" from the Broadfield banditos I'd wager
perhaps she did a runner after viewing Bunglefield’s latest accounts
Can’t see their private equity masters putting up with this very long.
Womble strikes back? Will Broadfield succumb to Wombles on the second attempt?
A sinking ship that's unlikely to exist in 12 months time given the way it is being run
There is no requirement to list a VAT number on a website
although it does need to be on every invoice
Hutchinson: Retaining independence a key part of joining Broadfield
Managing partner John Hutchinson said they hoped to add at least six firms to the network in key European and US jurisdictions over the next two years in a bid to target mid-market private capital and corporate clients
What was BDB Pitmans is a Reading-headquartered practice with over 420 staff in offices also in London
It has joined forces with SHP Legal Services – a subsidiary of global consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal – which will provide management services to law firms joining Broadfield in the areas of technology
“One of the drivers for them is to create a better tech stack that they can then use as a backbone for activities for law firms across the Broadfield network,” Mr Hutchinson explained
initially as Alvarez & Marsal Legal Services
to offer management and consulting services to law firms worldwide
where he had been managing partner of UK financial services law
he was chief executive of early disruptor Riverview Law
Mr Hutchinson said the appeal of the model was that BDB retained its independence while offering a route to accelerate its international growth; domestic growth through merger and acquisition was very much on table too
BDB was a member of Lexwork International – a network of 41 law firms across Europe
the US and Asia – and Mr Hutchinson said he hoped to retain relationships with firms in jurisdictions where Broadfield did not have a presence
While all of the Broadfield firms would be independent
he said they would have a “stronger and deeper relationship” than firms in networks like that
SHP also had experience and insight to help both operationally and strategically
“All mid-market firms are looking at how they differentiate themselves in the market
how they provide better options for their clients
how they maintain interest and enthusiasm among their own people… This is a route that really appealed to us.”
He reported that there has been “a lot of interest” from potential Broadfield firms – there will be one in each country
where the plan is to have a few covering key markets
They hope to announce the first additions in the first quarter of 2025 and to have at least six on board within the next couple of years
“We are looking for firms that have a similar alignment on values and ambition
and are in markets that are pivotal for the mid-market services we’re selling,” Mr Hutchinson said
Mr Price said “modernising and upgrading” member firms’ technology
operations and talent acquisition would allow them “to focus on delivering exceptional client service”
especially those that serve middle markets
are facing numerous challenges – technological disruption
provides a transformative solution for member law firms that serve mid-market clients to thrive and meet these challenges.”
It’s understandable that fully integrating GenAI within any business can feel daunting
This is why the focus should be on having a vision and starting the journey now
If there’s one thing the legal profession could do today
it would be to make domestic abuse and safeguarding training mandatory for all family lawyers and mediators
The traditional lawyer in me – and one who increasingly finds technology more confusing with each passing day – is resistant but it doesn’t take a lot to surmise that AI will likely become a very important tool

A billion-dollar US professional services company has moved into the UK by taking an established south east firm under its wing
will be rebranded as Broadfield UK and will become part of a stable of Broadfield firms around the world
Broadfield is supported by SHP Legal Services (SHPLS)
a management services company incorporated by global professional services firm Alvarez and Marsal

Jaguar may think it has a monopoly on weird product launches
but it’s got competition from a boundary-pushing law firm
BDB Pitmans has completed its metamorphosis into Broadfield
But it’s not a simple rebranding: in fact Broadfield is “a new international law firm”
It may look to the uninitiated like BDB Pitmans with a new name
however it's actually the “founding member” of a network being masterminded by US consultants Alvarez & Marsal
which has specialised in turning around failing businesses and restructuring collapsed ones
Legacy BDBP is currently the sole member of the Broadfield network. When announcing the vision in July
the firm spoke of ongoing talks with other firms and discussions with a firm in New York
Leaving BDB Pitmans in an extremely exclusive club of one
member firms will “retain their own governance…and P&L”
Alvarez & Marsal has said it will provide them with management services including technology and back-office services
and will also “assist in procuring investment capital for growth”
BDB Pitmans (which was formed following a merger in 2018) had been desperately seeking a merger, but talks with Womble Bond Dickinson fell apart last year
The firm had a good reputation and ROF hopes it does get some new friends
BDB Pitmans rebranding itself as Broadfield”
“Broadfield has plans to open offices around the globe
Broadfield will commence the expansion of its global footprint"
Whereas the BDB Pitman name carries a lot of goodwill (mainly because they snubbed Wombles).
another idea cooked up by management consultants
with floundering partners drinking the KoolAid.
Sounds like something Pinsent Masons might do.
Trying to put glitter on this 💩 doesn't make it any better
Same wide boys running the place will mean the same lack of coherent direction and success
Get rid of the used car salesmen and it might have a chance
wonder how long it takes AM to figure that out 🤔
Absolute joke that they rushed this launch this with no other firms in their international network - it reeks of desperation.Clearly the discussions with other firms are not going to plan
which wouldn't be surprising given their whole PIP team is leaving
Why would any firm want to join them now when PIP is BDB Pitmans key selling point
The firm's a sinking ship which is only going to see its finances get worse all the time it is bankrolling Alvarez & Marsal for effectively what is a cheap rebrand and inefficient back-office outsourcing
Sounds like the name of a soulless glass office block
Could of been pitMAns. Kicking themselves.
BDB Pitmans’ rebranding to Broadfield marks a significant step in its evolution
signaling its ambitions as a modern international law firm
While the new name aims to reflect a forward-looking identity
it risks losing the historical recognition tied to the BDB Pitmans brand
Rebrands can refresh an image but must be carefully managed to ensure continuity for existing clients and stakeholders
The secret to ladder house posting is burying it in a wider comment generated by generative AI
"Give me six sentences for Laz's new house" you'd tell it
It's also important for the ladder house comment to be rambling or end abruptly
like a cooker ending its journey still boxed in a hallway
Broadfield’s challenge will be balancing this fresh identity with maintaining the trust and reputation built over years
The move suggests a focus on competing in a global market
but its success will depend on how effectively the firm communicates its value under the new banner
A rebrand is only as strong as the strategy behind it
and time will tell if this marks a genuine turning point or a cosmetic change
Anonymous 06 December 24 08:54What glitter
I've never seen a more generic law firm website in my life.
It's built on WordPress...enough said...(faceslap)
well buried but what's with the ladder house spamming..
While the legal market is never short of speculation about the next potential merger
last month saw news of an eye-catching deal bringing two parties from very different markets together with a fresh approach
US turnaround firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) and UK mid-market player BDB Pitmans (BDBP) announced that they had teamed up to launch Broadfield
described as a ‘new international law firm’
setting out a bold intention to ‘target rapid expansion through talent and firm acquisition in the UK and US markets
with the aim of extending into continental Europe.’

has agreed to become the founding block of a new law firm being built by a US management consultancy
The firm will rebrand as ‘Broadfield’ after signing a letter of intent to become the “first member” of a “new International law firm” launched by Alvarez & Marsal
The company specialises in turning around failing businesses and restructuring collapsed ones
With over 8,500 employees and an estimated annual global revenue of over £3bn
its law firm venture is being run under the banner of a new company
Alvarez & Marsal Legal Services (AMLS)
the former chair of McDermott Will & Emery
BDB Pitmans brings 420 lawyers to the table, along with an abiding preference to merge after talks to combine with Womble Bind Dickinson fell apart last year.
AMLS said it intended to hoover up other mid-market players to grow its pet firm
which will focus on “mid-market private capital and corporate clients”.
AMLS has said it will provide them with management services including technology and back-office services
The AMLS deal isn't the merger BDB Pitmans wanted
but joining a network in the hopes it will serve as a matchmaker may be the next best thing
Sources told ROF that while the firm will remain independent "for now"
it’s hope will be that it can join with another member of the Broadfield club as soon as possible
“I imagine we bit their arm off up to the shoulder”
“We are thrilled that BDB Pitmans has agreed to become the first firm to join Broadfield
and we are in active discussions with others”
He said the business was currently in talks with a New York firm
BDBP MP John Hutchinson said that although big firms were “pricing themselves out of quality work”
mid-market forms such as his “are failing to capitalize [sic] on this dynamic” due to “structural headwinds”
“Broadfield is the answer to this problem”
The Wombles brand is so irretrievably tarnished that a firm which briefly considered a merger now has to rename itself.
"although big firms were “pricing themselves out of quality work”
mid-market forms such as his “are failing to capitalize [sic] on this dynamic” due to “structural headwinds”"
by having structures comprised almost entirely of people who could not be trusted to run the cake stall at a village fete without full time supervision
which represents a strong headwind against those same people being permitted to perform the type of legal services usually described as 'quality work'
Fair to say that sending them out into a broad field* will improve BDBP's fortunes
*Such as the car park at their local job centre plus
I did a vac scheme at Womble Bond Dicks back in 2018
should I also now be looking to change my name
Two bit firm that belongs on the high street
So THATS why support staff were being made redundant
Make themselves look more attractive.
It's all a far cry from Bircham & Co's office in Dean Farrar Street and the lovely old grandfather clock in reception
"So THATS why support staff were being made redundant
support staff do tend to be better looking that fee earners.
Everyone knows that if you want to pull someone at the Christmas Party it's not a great idea to stand next to anyone in Business Development because you will probably look like a goblin by comparison
Go dance near the Tax Department people instead next to whom you will seem a svelte Amazon in relative terms
titans of mid-market private capital work…
lol.And from where will A&M be extracting their pound of flesh
They are not known for running on tight margins
or are they extracting some kind of back-office and brand services fee?
Anyone dealt with Alvarez & Marsal? I have
this firm will soon be known for one hell of a lot of waffle & statements that would make Brendan Rodgers blush.
Pitmans staff must be relieved that they haven’t been digested by Knights plc
There was a time when Birchams could have majored on its core specialisms of private client and parliamentary
it belatedly ran down the full service road of folly which could only lead to a tie up first with an out of town outfit obvs bereft of plu
and then after all vestiges of distinction had been extinguished by some very ordinary managers and laterals
finally a rush to wed somebody anybody before the lights go on and the music stops
A very sad end for what was once quite a classy outfit with a notable pedigree
wow something must have been really really bad at Wombles for Pitmans to turn them down !
yes 3 times in its various forms to merge with BDB in its various forms
Even the very desperate BDB were not that desperate .
The compensation to the subpostmasters will exceed 1 billion
I suggest Wombles in the words of BDB bite the arm off of the next firm willing to take them over.
Quality Solicitors are probably thinking twice about admitting they’re talking with WBD about a merger / takeover after this news.
Never has so much fuss been made out of (1) outsourcing back office functions and having a rebrand; and (2) agreeing to consider doing something.
this may be desperation from BDB and may or may not work out but 100% better than teaming up with the Wombles which would have been a guaranteed disaster which even the very desperate BDB could even see.
Pitmans told the market that they were in fire sale mode by having talks with Wombles
Once that news broke the firm was always going to be picked off for a fraction of its initial worth
Management deserve the earache they will get after this

BDB Pitmans has been rocked by the news that eight partners in its highly-regarded Planning Infrastructure and Public Law practice are jumping ship for TLT
The defection represents a headache for BDB Pitmans
where insiders described the PIP team to RollOnFriday as highly profitable and “arguably the strongest department in the firm”
A spokesperson for BDB Pitmans said “we respect their decision”
They insisted the firm “will maintain its leading position in the Infrastructure sector” and was “actively recruiting to complement the many talented lawyers who remain in this team”
Precisely how many of those talented lawyers will still be there by the time their partners’ notice periods expire in 12 months is unclear
Sources told ROf that as things stand the practice will be left with just two partners
pointing to the team’s “unique experience that will be hard to replace”
The unorthodox tie-up was characterised by management as “the answer”
although so far Broadfield remains obstinately narrow
“We can confirm that 8 partners currently at BDB Pitmans have agreed to join TLT
Each of their decisions to join TLT is a testament to our reputation in the future energy
It doesn’t look like BDB Pitmans will last much longer. To be fair any lawyer worth their salt should have left when they read that management considered merging with Womble Bond Dickinsen
So the ones left probably aren’t the decent ones.
The Wombles brand is so irretrievably tarnished that a firm which briefly considered a merger now has to rename itself & can’t keep staff. There’s a lesson there
Why aren’t you reporting this in the context of Clyde & Co where over 800 staff from 1200 transferring have departed within two years of the takeover
A number of partners and senior associates currently serving notice periods and desperate to leave
"Sources told ROf that as things stand the practice will be left with just two partners."
What kind of chops do you think this pair must be to be abandoned by their eight departing colleagues like this
Is Clyde & Co still operating? At the office near me there were days last winter when the lights weren’t on.
This won't come as a surprise to anyone that really knows the firm
A combination of the massively substandard exec management and apathetic partners was always going to result in a sinking ship
It's just a shame that the good people they have at the firm are consistently let down by the inept leadership.
The writing must be on the wall for all the good ones left (lawyers or business support)
lack of sound decision making and no real strategy have led them here
The continued exodus from Travers doesn’t appear to have been featured by RoF.
Leaving aside how bad this is for BDB (and it is very bad) it’’s quite the coup for TLT
